A common thing that we end up hearing is, does God still speak today? Now, this is more common, I think, because of the charismatic movement and charismatic churches, where you're going to see this kind of thinking more prevalent, where they believe that God should still speak to us today the way that he did to the apostles and the prophets.

The Prophets and Apostles as Writers of Scripture

Well, there is a distinction that we see in the time period of the prophets, the apostles. They were writing new scripture. That's right. What we end up seeing when God would do these miracles and things like this and speak to people that way, well, what you saw was that they were writing scripture, which is exactly what you see in 1 Peter chapter 1, where he's explaining that we should rely on the prophetic word.

He says in verse 16 that we did not follow cleverly devised myths, when we made known to you the power and coming of the Lord Jesus Christ. But in verse 19, it says, and we have the prophetic word more fully confirmed.

Hearing God's Voice Through Scripture

When we want to know what God's word is, when we want to hear God's voice, we turn to his word. That's what Peter would encourage us. We don't need to hear God's audible voice. But many people think God's word is not enough.

And that's really what comes down to when people want to say, does God still speak today? He does, but they want something more than the written word. But that is how God speaks. He speaks through the word of God, the Bible.

And therefore, when people think that it's not sufficient, they look for something more. If you want to hear God speak, as my friend Justin Peter says, read the Bible. If you want to hear him speak audibly, read it aloud.
