The Purpose of Colossians and the Church's Heresies

The book of Colossians. Now, this is a letter written by Paul, and he's really going to have a couple of purposes in this letter. The issue with the church at Colossians was that they had a mixed community, Jewish-Gentile community, and that gave a kind of a good mixture of the way the church would end up being, but it also brought in different heresies that they had to deal with.

The legalism from Judaism, the mysticism from the Gentiles, and they had to address these things. Now, Paul, in this letter, is going to deal with many doctrinal issues. He is going to lift up on high the supremacy and deity of Jesus Christ.

Reconciliation, Redemption, and Spiritual Maturity

It's going to be laid out very clearly in this letter. He's going to deal with issues of reconciliation, redemption, the doctrine of election, he's going to deal with forgiveness, he's going to explain the nature of the church, and all these things to deal with this heresy that he's trying to address.

And his goal in doing all this is not only to lift Christ up on high, but it is also to lead the believers into spiritual maturity. That is the hope. Again, like his other letters, the first half is going to be more doctrinal in nature.

Doctrine in Chapters 1–2 and Practical Christian Conduct in the Final Chapter

Basically, chapters 1 and 2, the last chapter is going to be more practical in nature, dealing with Christian conduct, how to live within the houses, deal with our speech, things like this. And the goal, again, is for spiritual maturity.
