Welcome to another installment of Fighting for the Faith. My name is Chris Roseborough. I am your servant in Jesus Christ.
00:20
This is the channel that compares what people are saying in the name of God to the Word of God. All right, have any of you ever spent any time with charismatic
00:28
Pentecostals, people in the NAR? One of the things that they tell you is that you need to have an upgrade in your spirituality, that there's a second baptism, a second baptism of the
00:41
Holy Spirit, as evidenced by speaking in tongues. And if you've ever heard that doctrine, it's flat -out not what the
00:48
Bible says at all. Scripture is very clear what tongues is and its purpose, and it is not speaking in gibberish or speaking in some angelic language so the devil can't understand you.
01:04
It was a sign gift for the purpose of fulfilling a prophecy of Isaiah to unbelieving, stubborn, obstinate
01:12
Jews who refused to believe in Jesus. That was the purpose of tongues.
01:18
And we'll see it then in the in the book of Acts, as well as the book of First Corinthians. We'll walk through it.
01:23
But what we're gonna do today, we're gonna go back a little bit in time to the Christmas season of 2019 over at Hillsong Church, and we're gonna listen to Brian Houston, who is a
01:35
Pentecostal, who believes that everybody can speak in tongues. We're gonna show you how he's twisting God's Word, and we're gonna also document for you him disobeying a clear instruction of Scripture.
01:47
And that is that if somebody speaks in a tongue in a church service, if there's nobody to interpret, people are to speak one at a time and there has to be an interpreter.
01:56
If there isn't, you are to remain silent in the church. And so this is just one of the major, major problems of the
02:07
Pentecostals and Charismatics. Scripture is clear. There's one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one
02:14
God and Father of all. The second baptism of the Holy Spirit, that is not taught in Scripture anywhere, especially the book of Acts.
02:23
And so what we're gonna hear from Brian Houston here, we're gonna clean up from Scripture and give you yet another reason why you should avoid
02:34
Hillsong like the plague, if you aren't already doing that. I mean, even Justin Bieber knows to avoid
02:40
Hillsong. This should be even more proof. So let's whirl up the desktop, and there's the web browser, and we're gonna listen to part of a message delivered
02:52
December 22nd, 2019, Hillsong Church, Sydney, Australia. Brian Houston presiding, and we've sped up the audio just a smidge.
03:02
And again, I'm gonna ask my editor to distort the video just a little bit, and we'll note here at the front that this totally falls within the realm of fair use.
03:13
Unfortunately, Hillsong thinks that they're above the law, so we're gonna try to make it as difficult as possible for Hillsong to take down this video by transforming it and identifying the fact what we're showing you is for the purpose of criticism.
03:29
So all that being said, let's listen in to Brian Houston near the end of this sermon delivered on December 22nd, 2019.
03:38
Is our TV good? I really do believe the Holy Spirit is about to be poured out in the lives of people of our church.
03:45
He believes the Holy Spirit's about to be poured out there. I wonder if all the way across the church we could stand together for a moment.
03:55
Listen very carefully to what I say. I think almost every time, in fact it may even be every time, in the
04:02
New Testament it says that people were filled with the Holy Spirit. It says, and they spoke in other tongues. Twisting of Scripture, and I'm going to show you something really quick here.
04:11
So in the book of 1 Corinthians chapter 12, the Apostle Paul talks about how the
04:17
Holy Spirit distributes various gifts, and he does not give gifts that are unilateral, you know, unilaterally the same gift to everybody.
04:28
So this is the warp and woof of his argument. 1 Corinthians 12, 14. The body does not consist of one member, but of many.
04:36
If the foot should say, well because I'm not a hand, I don't belong to the body, that would not make it any less a part of the body.
04:43
And if the ear should say, well because I'm not an eye, I don't belong to the body, that would not make it any less a part of the body.
04:49
So if the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be?
04:57
But as it is, God has arranged the members, plural, in the body, each one of them, as He chose, as He chose.
05:04
If all were a single member, where would the body be?
05:10
As it is, there are many parts, one body. And so you'll note that the whole point that he's making here is that there are various gifts that God the
05:20
Holy Spirit gives. So he goes on, 1 Corinthians 12, 27. So now you are the body of Christ, and individually members of it, and God has appointed in the
05:30
Church, first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, gifts of healing, helping, administrating in various kinds of tongues.
05:38
Glossa here, you'll see when we take a look at Acts chapter 2, is synonymous with the phrase, languages.
05:44
Okay, it's not gibberish, coulda bought a Hyundai, shoulda bought a Kia, that's just nonsense, all right?
05:49
This is, these are actual languages that serve a purpose, it's one of the sign gifts in the New Testament, and various kinds of languages, are all apostles.
05:59
And so let me pull the Greek up just a little bit here so that you can see this. So here over in the
06:04
Greek portion, me pontes apostoloi, so that's verse 29, begins with a question.
06:11
When the, when me shows up in a question in Koine Greek, the question being answered must, has to, there is no way around it, be answered in the negative.
06:23
So but the me doesn't get translated, so the only part that's getting translated here in English is pontes apostoloi, and the question is, are all apostles?
06:32
But the me here makes it clear, the answer is no. So watch how then how the
06:37
Greek works. Me pontes apostoloi, are all apostles? No. Me pontes prophetai, are all prophets?
06:44
No. Me pontes didaskaloi, are all teachers? No. Me pontes dunamis, do all work miracles?
06:54
No. Me pontes charismata exousin iamaton, do all possess gifts of healing?
07:01
No. Me pontes gloses lalusin, do all speak in tongues?
07:08
No. Any charismatic who tells you that God wants everybody to speak in tongues, they are contradicting what
07:18
God the Holy Spirit had the Apostle Paul write for us in 1st Corinthians 12. Tongues is not a universal language that God wants to give to all
07:29
Christians as the sign that they've received the second baptism of the
07:34
Holy Spirit. There's only one baptism. Ephesians 4 makes this clear. So we've got a big problem here, and this is a problem that has existed within the
07:43
Christian Church for a long time, and that is that we have tolerated for too long those who are lying to us and telling us that God the
07:51
Holy Spirit wants everybody to speak in tongues. That is not true. Even if tongues were operative today, and I do not believe that it is, it is one of the sign gifts of the of the apostolic era, even if it were, only a few people, as the
08:07
Lord chooses, a small portion of the body of Christ would have this spiritual gift.
08:14
And so you'll note that we've got a problem when somebody wants to say universally everybody can do this.
08:20
No, they can't. So when we take a look then at Acts chapter 2, we'll see how this comes into play, and then we'll go over to 1st
08:27
Corinthians 14 and watch how 1st Corinthians 14 describes the purpose of the sign and who really it is for.
08:36
So in Acts chapter 2, this is when Christ sends the Holy Spirit, and the Gospel of John, Christ makes it clear, the
08:43
Spirit is sent for the purpose of convicting people of sin and unbelief, that's really what
08:48
His function is, and pointing people and testifying to Christ. So on the day of Pentecost, when it arrived, they were all together in one place, and suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind.
09:00
It filled the entire house where they were sitting and divided tongues as a fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them.
09:08
And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues. Now here the Greek word is glosa, all right?
09:15
So we have one instance here, tongues, but even the term glosa, if you were to look it up, hang on a second here, if it showed up here on this on the bottom here, and I'll just kind of make this bigger here, glosa, all right?
09:31
So here as an organ of speech, yeah, so organ of speech or the tongue, but one of the other possible, here we go, a body of words and systems that makes up a distinctive language, language or tongue.
09:48
And we're going to see then in the how God the Holy Spirit uses synonyms to point out that, hey, this is something that is a language here.
10:00
And you'll see that because Acts makes it very clear. They're not speaking gibberish. People who are visiting
10:06
Jerusalem for Shavuot, that they are hearing the wonders of God proclaimed in their own languages.
10:12
So first instance here, so they spoke in other tongues, and you can say languages as the
10:18
Spirit gave them utterance. Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven, and at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered because each one was hearing them speak in his own, and here the
10:30
Holy Spirit uses a different word, not glosa, but dialectos. Dialects is where we, you know, the
10:37
English word that we get dialects from, and it means languages. They were hearing them speak in their own language, and this is a sign gift.
10:47
And they were amazed and astonished, saying, are not all these who are speaking Galileans? How is it that we hear each of us in his own native language,
10:57
Parthenians, and by the way, dialectos here again, his own native language, Parthenians and Medes, Elamites and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both
11:13
Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabians, we hear them telling in our own, and then it says glosa.
11:19
So you know, dialectos and glosa are used interchangeably as synonyms, and it's referring specifically to human languages, the mighty works of God, and all were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, what does this mean?
11:32
But others mocked, said they are filled with new wine. But in Acts 14 then, we get not only a prohibition, but an explanation as to what tongues is all about.
11:45
So Paul says this in 1 Corinthians 14 .20, Brothers, do not be children in your thinking.
11:53
Be infants in evil, but in your thinking be mature. In the law it is written, by people of strange tongues and by lips of foreigners will
12:00
I speak to this people, and even then they will not listen to me, says the Lord. This is a prophecy from Isaiah chapter 28, verses 11 and 12, where Isaiah, God through Isaiah, prophesies that the purpose of tongues is a sign gift to unbelieving
12:19
Jews, that I will speak to them by the lips of foreigners, and even then they will not listen.
12:29
It was a sign gift to affirm the message of Jesus Christ, and a sign gift against them of God's judgment.
12:37
By people of strange tongues and by the lips of foreigners, I will speak to this people, even then they will not listen to me, says the
12:43
Lord. Thus tongues are a sign not for believers but for unbelievers, while prophecy is a sign not for unbelievers but for believers.
12:53
So you kind of get the idea. So the purpose of tongues was a sign to Jews from Isaiah 28 to fulfill that prophecy, to basically show them their unbelief and their hard -heartedness, and God can point to it and say,
13:07
I even sent people who spoke in tongues to you and you didn't listen, just as I said they would in Isaiah 28.
13:14
So then the question then is, is that, well, if that's the purpose of it, why would people speak in tongues in church?
13:20
They shouldn't unless somebody understands the language that's being spoken and can offer an interpretation.
13:27
So then Paul says this, so what then, brothers, when you come together, each one has a hymn, a lesson, a revelation, a tongue, an interpretation, let all things be done for building up.
13:37
In the church, gifts are only to be used for the purpose of building each other up. If any speak in a tongue, let there be only two or at the most three and each in turn and let someone interpret.
13:49
If there is no one to interpret, let each of them keep silent in church and speak to himself in God.
13:57
Yeah, so direct command of God the Holy Spirit is if you have the gift of tongues and you don't have an interpreter or you don't have the gift to interpret what it is you're saying, you don't get to say nothing in church.
14:08
And people are to speak in turn, two at the most three, and there has to be an interpreter.
14:13
If there isn't, you got to remain silent. So here, Brian Houston is not going to abide by the prohibitions of scripture and he's already teaching falsely that everybody speaks in tongues.
14:27
No, they don't. I don't want you to think about tongues, but your shoes come with the tongues in them. And they're supposed to be there.
14:36
They wouldn't fit well if they weren't there. And I believe the Holy Spirit comes and we should be open to the speaking in other tongues.
14:42
You say, oh, that's that weird. That's weird. Well, you know what? Naturally speaking, it is kind of weird. It is kind of weird that the
14:48
Holy Spirit can give you a language that you didn't learn in university. It is kind of weird though. And you say, well, why would
14:53
I do that? It's a prayer language. No, it's not. That's a twisting of scripture too.
14:59
You speak mysteries to God. In other words, God understands. Well, we don't know how to pray. You speak to God. He understands.
15:04
It's a mystery to God. Even the devil doesn't understand the Father's mysteries. Yeah. Again, total twisting of scripture here.
15:12
That's not what that text says in 1 Corinthians 13 and 14. I'm going to believe in this service for people to speak in other tongues for the first time.
15:19
I'm going to believe right now for the Holy Spirit to be poured out. Everybody, everybody's going to speak in tongues. I'm going to believe.
15:26
I'm going to believe that God is going to open up. Why are you going to believe that contrary to the clear teaching of God's word?
15:35
The Holy Spirit will come upon you and literally move your jaw and make your mouth work.
15:44
It's a faith. You've got to get that on faith. Says no text ever. You start speaking in other languages and you say, oh, that's just me.
15:50
And of course it is. It's you. But the Holy Spirit gives utterance. You speak the words, the Holy Spirit. And what does it do?
15:55
What's the point? Well, the Bible says that when you speak in other tongues, it edifies you. In other words, it strengthens you. It can bring power into your spiritual walk and bring power into your spiritual life.
16:04
When you're open. Yeah, the apostle Paul makes it clear that he would rather say five words intelligibly with his mind than speak 10 ,000 in a tongue because his mind is not edified when he's speaking in tongues.
16:15
The Holy Spirit. You know what we're going to do? We're going to sing this again. Then sing my song. We'll sing it across the church.
16:21
You guys in Fiji, you sing as well. In Tokyo, you sing as well. We're going to sing this. And when we've stopped singing,
16:26
I'm going to ask everyone to start ministering, praising God in other tongues. And if you've never spoken in other languages,
16:33
I pray God will. Contrary to the express command of God, the Holy Spirit, that when somebody speaks in a tongue in church, one or two or at the most three, one in turn has to have an interpreter.
16:45
He's just flat out disobeying. As I said, it's not mechanical. The Holy Spirit doesn't just overtake you like that.
16:51
You've got to speak and step out and fight everything in God. This is just pure mythology. This is not biblical doctrine.
16:57
You step out, begin to speak words you don't know. I believe the Holy Ghost to come upon you in Jesus name. Are we up for this?
17:03
Come on. Let's just start now. All right. So they're going to sing several bars of then sings my soul.
17:09
And here's after they're done singing. Here's Brian Houston. That's gibberish.
17:21
That is not, that is not tongues. Tongues are human languages that people can understand.
17:29
That's gibberish. That's not tongues. And he's absolutely teaching people falsely that God wants everybody to do this.
17:39
No, he doesn't. God, the Holy Spirit makes it clear that not all speak in tongues. Let me back this up just a little bit. Yeah, I think you get the point.
18:02
Absolutely deplorable. So if you have any friends or family, or if even you're attending a
18:08
Pentecostal church, God's word is clear that God gives various gifts and that not everybody speaks in tongues.
18:15
So the claim that, oh, there's a second baptism of the Holy Spirit. No, there isn't. There's one Lord, one faith and one baptism.
18:22
And that as evidenced by speaking in tongues and everybody, God wants everybody to have this gift, that's a flat out lie.
18:29
Scripture says the exact opposite of it. And even if the gift were operative today, if you have, if you're attending a church where everybody's blathering on in gibberish, that's a direct violation of what
18:43
God has laid out in First Corinthians 14. So yeah. So if you know anybody that's under the sway of these false doctrines, then help them so that they can be set free and know the real work of the
18:55
Holy Spirit. It's not to make them speak in gibberish, but to produce in them the fruit of the Spirit, love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, gentleness, goodness, and self -control.
19:05
Something completely different and repentance and faith in Christ for the forgiveness of our sins.
19:12
This Holy Spirit convicts us of sin and unbelief. The Holy Spirit does not make you speak in gibberish.
19:18
That's something completely different. In fact, that's a different spirit altogether. Hopefully you found this helpful.
19:23
If so, all the information on how you can share the video is down below in the description. And until next time, may
19:28
God richly bless you in the grace and mercy won by Jesus Christ and his vicarious death on the cross for all of your sins.
