Hey guys, Colin here, and welcome back to the channel where the Bible and critical thinking meet to give you real
00:05
Christian commentary about the things that matter. Thanks so much for watching, let's get into the video. So today we have yet another video of Mike Todd preaching the prosperity gospel.
00:15
We already know that Mike endorses Joel Osteen, the granddaddy of all modern prosperity teachers, and we already know that Mike Todd's church literally has prosperity gospel doctrine in their statement of faith.
00:26
We already know these things. And yet at the very same time, there are seemingly good, solid, professing
00:32
Christians, many of whom go to your church, who listen to Mike Todd all the time. It really boggles the mind.
00:38
We have this bizarre situation in many churches where you can denounce the prosperity gospel among your
00:43
Christian friends, and several of them will say yes and amen. That prosperity gospel stuff is so unbiblical.
00:49
And then you can ask those very same people who their favorite pastors to listen to are online, and they'll say
00:55
Mike Todd, or Stephen Furtick, or Joel Osteen. The lack of discernment is incredible, and good people are being deceived.
01:02
That is why I consistently make videos about these people, because they are dangerously appealing, even to well -meaning
01:08
Christians. So with that said, let's review this clip of Mike Todd's sermon in which he talks about healing.
01:14
Watch this. When Steph Curry comes over half court and chunks the ball up, and it goes in, it's happened so many times that if you think that it's luck, you not paying attention, you may not be able to do it, but he has intentionally done that over, and over, and over again.
01:45
So what looks abnormal for others, I'm about to preach, is normal for me.
01:51
See, God doesn't want you to live a life where it's abnormal that he blesses you, and it's abnormal that he heals you, and it's abnormal that when you speak, things start to move, and it's abnormal that your family walks in victory.
02:07
So in context, he's talking about Steph Curry, and the full video will be linked in the description, by the way.
02:13
And he's talking about how Steph Curry can throw the ball from half court and make it in the basket consistently, even though this is a very difficult shot.
02:20
Some people think this is lucky, but the consistency of it indicates that it's not luck. It's intentional.
02:26
It's skillful. This example is meant to illustrate Mike's point in the sermon. Many people in the church will see someone freed from a particular disease, or injury, or ailment, and they'll say, wow, what a fortunate coincidence.
02:38
What a lucky guy that he's been healed. According to Mike Todd, though, it's not a coincidence at all, and I would actually agree with that.
02:45
Instead, Mike is saying that in the same way Steph Curry can consistently make shots that seem, on the face of it, impossible,
02:53
God is much more capable of accomplishing seemingly impossible things. This is the context of Mike's statement, and the positive aspects of it need to be affirmed before we get into the issues, which are really glaring.
03:05
Mike Todd is absolutely correct when he says that good health is not a coincidence. It's a providential decree of God.
03:12
Proverbs 16, 33 says, quote, The lot is cast into the lap, but its every decision is from the
03:18
Lord, end quote. So when you roll a dice, even something as simple as that, where that dice lands, is a sovereign decision of God.
03:26
When you flip a coin, God has providentially decided which side it will land on. There is not one atom in this entire universe that does not do what
03:34
God has decreed it to do according to his sovereign will. Christians should not believe in fate, secular coincidence, or random luck in the worldly sense of the words.
03:44
Rather, we should believe in the providential authority of God. And on this point,
03:49
Mike Todd is partially correct, and good on him for that. But unfortunately, being partially correct on one point doesn't make you a good, solid
03:56
Bible teacher. When speaking of false teaching in Galatians 5, 9, Paul says, quote, A little leaven leavens the whole lump, end quote.
04:04
A little false teaching is still dangerous, according to Paul. But Colin, what's the false teaching in this sermon anyway?
04:10
I don't think Mike was saying anything wrong, aren't you just being too nitpicky? No. You have to listen closely and compare this to Scripture.
04:18
Remember what Mike Todd said in the video. He said, quote, God doesn't want you to live a life where it's abnormal that he blesses you, where it's abnormal that he heals you, end quote.
04:28
In other words, he's saying God always wants to bless you and heal you, so why can't you just recognize that and believe it?
04:35
There is a very basic line of reasoning here that clearly exposes the prosperity gospel that Mike Todd is preaching.
04:41
It goes something like this. Mike Todd says that God always wants to heal you. He wants healing and blessing to be normative in your life.
04:49
That's what he said. Therefore, if you are sick or hurting or injured, whose fault is it? If God always wants to heal you and you're not being healed, then who is it that needs to get their act together to get the healing?
05:02
Surely it's not God. He's all -powerful, and he already wants to heal you in the first place. So what's the hang -up here?
05:07
You see, if the ultimate decision of who gets healed and who does not get healed doesn't lie with God, then whose decision is it?
05:15
Think carefully about this. It's very important. If God always wants to heal you, but for whatever reason he does not heal you, you're not healed, then something must be getting in the way of what
05:25
God wants for you. Sound familiar? So it's not God's ultimate decision that's happening in the world, because his ultimate desire was for you to be healed.
05:33
Therefore, if you're not healed, then it is someone else's ultimate decision that is being actualized in the world.
05:40
This is the problem with Mike Todd's false teaching. The ultimate conclusion here is that if you would only get out of your own way, if you would only rebuke the devil's presence in your life, if you would only have more crazy faith in God, then you would be receiving the healing that God actually wants for your life.
05:57
This is the foundation of name -it -and -claim -it and word -of -faith healing theology. And behind all of it is a denial of God's sovereign authority over his creation.
06:08
It's not luck. It's skill. I'm like Steph Curry. I've practiced my faith shot over and over, and now the faith ball goes into the healing net every time.
06:17
Nothing but net, bro. But there are very serious Biblical problems with this basketball theology.
06:23
Again, it denies the authority and sovereignty of God over creation. In Mike Todd's view,
06:28
God is completely sovereign, but just not over your healing. He wants to do it, but he just can't. And this is a total contradiction in terms.
06:36
How can God be completely sovereign if he is not sovereign over all things, including whether or not you are healed?
06:43
Psalm 135, verse 6 says, quote, The Lord does whatever pleases him in the heavens and on the earth, in the seas and all their depths, end quote.
06:52
But Colin, surely God does not ordain the sickness of people, right? That's not in God's nature, right?
06:58
Wrong. Think again. In Isaiah 45, verse 7, God says, quote, I form light and create darkness.
07:05
I make well -being and create calamity. I am the Lord who does all these things, end quote.
07:11
Yes, the Lord is sovereign, even over your sickness. So if it is the Lord's will to take away calamity or sickness or any other bad thing, he can and will do that.
07:21
Compare this, though, to how Mike Todd's view of God plays out. He says, God always wants to heal you and bless you under all circumstances.
07:29
But if that's the case, how could God create calamity, as he himself says he does? If that's the case, then why are there sick
07:36
Christians in the world? Either God is not really in control, or Mike Todd has no idea what he's talking about.
07:43
And I think the better option out of those two is fairly obvious. The other problem with this false teaching is that it is unfortunately directly tied to the very essence of Mike Todd's ministry.
07:53
This is a very important doctrine that he teaches all the time. God wants to heal you. God wants to bless you.
08:00
God absolutely desires for you to be materially successful in all areas of life, etc.
08:06
When this kind of teaching is one of the main things that pulls people into your ministry, when it is part and parcel of your
08:12
Christian faith and you're preaching at large, you're preaching the prosperity gospel. This kind of materialistic
08:18
Christianity where God is nothing but a blessing slot machine is very appealing to worldly people.
08:24
In other words, the good news that you are drawing people into your church with is not that they're sinners in need of God's grace, and that this grace is available through Jesus Christ.
08:33
Instead, your good news, your gospel, in effect, is that God has blessings in store for you.
08:39
And all you have to do to receive these blessings is have enough crazy faith. Again, that's Mike Todd's message here.
08:46
God wants to bless you and heal you so bad, all you have to do is get out of his way. And this is simply out of accordance with God's word.
08:54
This is not the biblical gospel. This is not good, solid biblical teaching. Romans 16, 17, for instance, it says, quote,
09:01
I appeal to you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions and create obstacles contrary to the doctrine that you have been taught.
09:09
Avoid them. End quote. We are required to mark and avoid people who consistently teach false doctrine that is contrary to God's word.
09:17
And when teaching people, neither Paul, nor John, nor Peter, nor any other disciple of Christ was out there telling people to follow
09:24
God because he just desperately wants to heal and bless you. The teaching of Mike Todd and other prosperity gospel charlatans exists not in keeping with biblical teaching, but in opposition to biblical teaching.
09:37
There's no way to get around that. So stay far away from Mike Todd and from teachers like him, and pray that they would repent and turn to the truth of God's word.
