I was thinking about Satan wanting to see a sign, wanting to put
Jesus to the test. And Jesus has no need to put this to the test.
He has all authority. He has all power.
But he's not going to fall poor victim to the games that Satan is playing.
And he says, you shall not tempt, probably better test, you shall not put the
Lord your God to the test. And so Jesus is responding in each of these instances, these three main temptations, he's responding with truth about God directly from the
Holy Scripture. Now there's a big application here for us. The Holy Spirit speaks to us through the
Holy Scripture. That is the primary way in which the Holy Spirit communicates with the people of God.
It's through his word. We all want signs and visions, and we actually have
God's revelation and his voice ready to speak to us at every moment of every day.
We have to crack open the Bible or bring to remembrance a scripture that we've memorized, and the
Holy Spirit actually speaks to us as people. It's better than the charismatic chaos.
It's better that he speaks to us from his word. Better than some experience that we can have.
So in some way, Satan is tempting Jesus to have this amazing experience where he throws himself off the temple and gets rescued by the angels.
