Faith's Triumphs and Tribulations (Hebrews 11:33-38) | Worship Service

The author of Hebrews lists a number of triumphs and tribulations that are enjoyed and endured by faith. Though no specific people are mentioned in connection with this list, we can connect some of the dots and discern whom the author has in mind. We learn that faith is effective to bring triumph out of tragedy and to enable the righteous to endure tragedy to the glory of God. An exposition of Hebrews 11:33-38.

00:18: We were ruined in our sin, we were guilty and undone.
00:28: When your love reached down with sovereign hands and beckoned us to come, you sought out the wanderers, made the prodigals come home.
00:46: With a lavish feast you welcomed us, for you made us your own.
00:58: You have loved us, you love your son, we've been shown.
01:26: We're your children now, you made us your own.
01:41: Strangers to the world, but no strangers to your throne.
01:49: We draw near you now with confidence, for all our fears are gone.
01:58: And when Christ our King returns, we'll meet saints we've never known.

39:45: Hebrews chapter 10, verse 32 But remember the former days when after being enlightened you endured a great conflict of sufferings partly by being made a public spectacle through reproaches and tribulations and partly by becoming sharers with those who were so treated for you showed sympathy to the prisoners and accepted joyfully the seizure of your property knowing that you have for yourselves a better possession and a lasting one therefore do not throw away your confidence which has a great reward for you have need of endurance so that when you have done the will of God you may receive what was promised for yet in a very little while he who is coming will come and will not delay but my righteous one shall live by faith and if he shrinks back my soul has no pleasure in him but we are not of those who shrink back to destruction but of those who have faith to the preserving of the soul now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen and without faith it is impossible to please him for he who comes to God must believe that he is and that he is a rewarder of those who seek him will you stand with me as we pray our gracious and merciful

51:33: Afflicted Ill -treated Men of whom the world was not worthy Wandering in deserts And mountains
51:38: And caves And holes in the ground Let's pray together Our Father, we pray now
51:44: For the illuminating work Of Your Holy Spirit That You would shine the light of truth
51:49: Upon our minds That we may understand Your Word And upon our hearts That we may love Your Word And upon our wills
51:56: That we may obey Your Word We pray that You would be glorified Through our study And the meditation now
52:01: Of our hearts We ask this in Christ's name When we read the triumphs
52:06: And accomplishments Of the men and women of faith In Hebrews chapter 11 There is a subtle danger That presents itself to us
52:13: And it is the danger Of responding to these examples In the wrong way We are tempted to compare ourselves
52:20: With them But in the wrong way In an inappropriate way It is tempting for us
52:26: To take their accomplishments And their victories And the great things That these men and women did
52:33: And to single out Their singularly great accomplishments And then select some of our worst failures
52:39: And then to put them Side by side with one another And then say to ourselves I can't possibly measure up To that kind of faith
52:46: Whatever faith it is That these great men and women had It is obviously something greater Than my kind of faith
52:51: The faith that I have Because I have never put Foreign armies to flight I have never conquered kingdoms I have never shut
52:57: The mouths of lions I have never quenched The power of fire I have never received The promise of a land
53:03: In the Middle East I have never received The promise of a lineage Or a kingdom Or anything like that So whatever faith
53:08: They have Must be for the upper crust The special Super spiritual element
53:14: The 1 % of humanity That has that kind of faith And for the rest of us The hoi polloi
53:19: Those of us sitting In the cheap seats We just have to be content With what we have Of faltering faith
53:26: And faltering trust That the Lord might give to us We are tempted to think And to say
53:31: I could never aspire to that I could never accomplish that And we ought to be encouraged That would be a way
53:36: Of being discouraged By Hebrews chapter 11 But we ought to be encouraged By this list In Hebrews chapter 11
53:42: Because the purpose Of these notable examples Is not to discourage us In that way But rather to encourage us
53:48: They serve as reminders That yes These men and women Did great and mighty things And yes they believed
53:54: God For impossible things And inexplicable things And extraordinary things
53:59: And God granted them that grace And God did those great things For them But we ought to be encouraged
54:05: By the reminder That they were men and women Of like nature as we are Fallen sons and daughters of Adam Ruined and wrecked people
54:13: Who were also physically weak And spiritually weak And emotionally weak And had their own issues
54:19: Their own failures Their own disabilities And so we are just like Them Their faith was extraordinary
54:25: God did extraordinary things Through some of these Men and women But the point is Not for us to be discouraged
54:31: But for us to say Yes this is what God can do Through weak men and women Weak people
54:37: Who likewise have the same Kind of weaknesses And inabilities That these men and women
54:42: In Hebrews chapter 11 had So far from being just The precious possession And blessing
54:48: Of a special few Upper crust spiritual elite In Christianity Faith is the precious possession
54:54: Of all those whom the Lord Draws to Himself It is the precious blessing And gem that belongs
54:59: To all believers It is the air we breathe And it is influencing
55:04: And should influence Our decisions and our works Our labors Our service Our giving Our sacrifices
55:09: Our love for one another Our worship And everything that we do Each and every day Because whatever is not a faith
55:15: Is sin There are those two categories Those things that we do In obedience to the
55:20: Word of God Seeking to bring His truth To bear in our lives And live in accordance With what He has revealed
55:26: And then there is sin Everything else is sin So that whatever is not a faith Is sin
55:32: We have quite a list of heroes That we have seen mentioned In Hebrews chapter 11 And so far we have covered The verses that name
55:38: All of them by name We finished verse 32 last week And that was the list of people
55:44: Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah David, Samuel and the prophets Those are the last ones That are named by name
55:49: In Hebrews chapter 11 And now there remains for us In the discussion of faith In verses 33 through 38
55:54: Only this list of accomplishments Some of these things We are familiar with Conquering kingdoms
55:59: Shutting the mouths of lions Quenching the power of fire Some of these things We are not as familiar with We don't know exactly
56:06: Who it is that the author Has in mind specifically For each one of these things But he is listing here things
56:13: Without much comment Because he is aware That he could go on and on And run out of paper And patience
56:18: Before he exhausts The examples of faith That he could give To this first century Believing community
56:24: So the point herein And herein lies the encouragement That by faith
56:30: You and I join ourselves To this list To this company of people It is by faith That we are willing
56:35: To bear faith's reproach And thus it is by faith That we will receive Faith's reward
56:41: If we with them Bear faith's reproach Then we with these men and women
56:46: Will gain faith's reward And so we are joined To this group In Hebrews chapter 11 By virtue of a like precious faith
56:53: That God gave to them Even if what God does Through our lives Is not as history altering
57:00: As what he does Through the lives of the people Who are mentioned In Hebrews chapter 11 So we read here
57:05: Before we started Verses 33 through 38 And I'm going to handle this list In the same way
57:10: Or similarly to it That I did to the list last week In verse 32 Of the people I don't think that the point
57:16: Of the author Is to be gleaned In an exhaustive Deep dive Into each one of these things That these people accomplished
57:22: Or did by faith But rather From the list itself And so We are going to In keeping with our pattern
57:28: We're going to have Kind of a High flying overview As it were Through verses 33 through 38
57:34: I want you to notice That there are two statements In the list That are parenthetical statements They're kind of Explanatory statements
57:40: That the author gives As he's listing these things The first is in verse 35 Women received back their dead
57:46: By resurrection That's something That they did by faith But look at the Parenthetical description
57:51: And others were tortured Not accepting their release So that they might obtain A better resurrection As sort of a
57:57: Parenthetical explanation There's another one Down in verse 38 Men of whom the world Is not worthy
58:03: It seems like Parenthetically inserted Into this list Each one of them does So here's what
58:08: We're going to do We're going to go through The list today And then next week We're just going to take Those two statements
58:13: That they may obtain A better resurrection And they are Men and women Of whom the world Is not worthy
58:19: And I have no idea What the outline Is going to be But we're going to Pull those two From out of this list
58:24: And we're just going to Look at the significance And what we learn From each of those Two parenthetical phrases But now
58:29: We turn our attention To the list And we see here That the list Is easily divided up Into two sections
58:35: Or two different Kind of groupings Of things First you have In verses 33
58:40: Through 34 Actually 35a The role of faith Or the work of faith
58:45: In effecting great triumphs And then in verses 35b And following All the way through The end of verse 38
58:52: You see the work of faith In enduring great tribulations Effecting great triumphs And enduring great tribulations
58:58: So let's look at first At this list Of great triumphs Beginning in verse 32
59:03: You'll notice the phrase Who by faith That connects The list that he's About to give
59:09: Generally speaking Or in a very loose way Back to verse 32 Where you have This list of men
59:14: Because it is The continuation Of the sentence That begins in verse 32 You have Gideon Barak Samson Jephthah David Samuel And the prophets
59:23: Generally this list And there are others That we could put into that list Elijah and Elisha And others like that Isaiah Jeremiah Daniel Jonah Joel All of those great men
59:35: Of the Old Testament You could put more Kind of like minded Similar men Into that list Who These men
59:42: And others that are like them Did these things And other things Like them So he's simply Describing generically
59:48: The kind of men He's talking about And then generically The kind of things That they did Or endured by faith
59:53: So some of these men In verses 32 Through 33 And others who are like them Did more than A couple of things
01:00:01: That are listed On the list Some of these men Some of the things On the list Describe more than Just one man
01:00:07: So there's not A one to one correspondence Between the list of men And the list of accomplishments Or triumphs
01:00:12: But it is rather A loose connection These men And men like them Accomplish these kind of things
01:00:17: And things like them By faith That's the idea So let's look now At the list And the purpose is
01:00:22: To show the power of God And the value of trusting And walking in obedience To Him First up They conquered kingdoms
01:00:29: This is something That could be affirmed Of all the judges In Israel's history It could be affirmed
01:00:34: Of course of David And in some sense Samuel Who himself Also led the nation Over certain military triumphs
01:00:40: There are many times In Israel's history When God would raise up A deliverer A king A judge
01:00:45: Somebody unique Who would lead against An army of people Who were oppressing them Or oppressing them
01:00:52: Or taking things from them And ruling them So that phrase Conquered kingdoms Would apply to more
01:00:58: Than just the men On that list Certainly And it would apply To a number of men On that list Gideon Barak Samson Jephthah David Second Performed acts of righteousness
01:01:07: And that does not This does not mean That they were They were inherently righteous Nor that these men
01:01:13: Were perfect In their righteousness Remember We closed last week By observing That these were men
01:01:19: In many cases Who were marked By grievous failure Morally speaking Samson And David Had moral blights
01:01:26: Upon their character And their record So it doesn't mean That these men Always did righteousness
01:01:31: But rather That they did In spite of their flaws Do righteous things David ruled
01:01:37: The people righteously 2 Samuel 8 Verse 15 David reigned Over all Israel And David administered
01:01:43: Justice and righteousness For all the people Generally speaking Writ large The story of David's life
01:01:49: Is yes He had A moral failure But when When you consider everything
01:01:54: He ruled the people In justice And righteousness He was a godly man Who was after God's own heart
01:02:00: He did righteous things So generally speaking We can say That these men In obedience
01:02:05: To the word of God Died in righteousness Mortified sin Denied themselves Served others
01:02:11: Acted in righteousness In obedience To the word of God And they were driven And motivated
01:02:16: By their faith Third They obtained promises That's the third thing On the list
01:02:21: They obtained promises Now some vaguely imagine That there is a contradiction In this list And in fact
01:02:26: A contradiction In Hebrews 11 itself I want you to look back At verse 13 All these died in faith
01:02:32: Without receiving the promises But having seen them And having welcomed them From heaven And having confessed
01:02:37: That they were strangers And exiles on the earth Then Hebrews 11 33 Which we just read Says Who by faith
01:02:43: Obtained promises And then look down At verse 39 All these Having gained approval
01:02:49: Through their faith Did not receive What was promised Because God Had provided something Better for us
01:02:54: So apart from us They would not be made perfect So verse 13 They died without receiving
01:02:59: The promises Verse 33 They obtained promises Verse 39 They did not receive
01:03:04: What was promised So did they obtain the promise Or not? Is the author Schizophrenic here?
01:03:11: Does he forget What he wrote In one verse? Some vainly imagine A contradiction there
01:03:16: Because it's really Not a contradiction It depends on what you mean By obtaining promises And it depends on What you mean
01:03:23: By which promises We're talking about Doesn't it? Just take Abraham For instance Was Abraham Promised things?
01:03:30: He promised a lot of things He promised a land That he never possessed In his lifetime And a son That he did not have That he did see
01:03:35: In his lifetime Right? So would you say That Abraham received The promises or not? We'd say yeah
01:03:41: He did receive The promise of a son But there are other promises That he did not receive In his lifetime
01:03:46: David was promised A kingdom Did God give him The kingdom? He did David was also promised
01:03:52: A son Who would Sit on the throne Of that kingdom And rule and reign
01:03:58: Over the house of David Forever and ever Did David ever In his life See that son? He did not
01:04:04: That was the greater Son of David The Lord Jesus Christ Gideon was promised
01:04:09: That if he Obeyed the Lord That he would Defeat Midian With 300 men Did he receive that promise? He did
01:04:15: See you and I Have been promised A whole lot of things Some of which we receive In this life Forgiveness of sins
01:04:21: A measure of sanctification The indwelling Of the Holy Spirit The gifts Of the Holy Spirit Illumination From the word of God There are all kinds of things
01:04:29: That we could list That you and I receive In this life Adoption of sons Justification But there are things
01:04:34: That we Promises that we do not receive In this life Like Our ultimate glorification
01:04:39: And our ultimate Sanctification And seeing the Lord's faith And inheriting that kingdom
01:04:45: That is promised In the Old Testament So there are things That are promised to us That we do not receive There are things That are promised to us
01:04:50: That we do receive And the point of Hebrews chapter 11 Is that Some of these men Received the things
01:04:56: In their lifetime That they were promised And they received them In their lifetime And some of these men Were promised things
01:05:01: That we still Have not seen realized Even today We have not seen Them realized And yet they died in faith

01:05:26: So in a sense David and Samson Also shut the mouths Of lions But Daniel Believed and had faith
01:05:33: And the lion's mouths Were shut Because he just trusted In God's sovereignty Number five They quenched
01:05:38: The power of fire Since we're talking About Daniel Who would that refer to? Shadrach Meshach And Abednego Notice it says
01:05:46: That they quenched The power of fire It doesn't say That they quenched The fire Because they endured The fire didn't they?
01:05:51: But what they were Delivered from was The effect Or the power Of the fire Fire's power Is the power
01:05:57: To consume The power to burn The power to destroy What is there They quenched The power of the fire
01:06:03: Though they stood In the midst of the flames Themselves And don't forget Remember if you will Their statement of faith
01:06:08: In Daniel chapter three Shadrach Meshach And Abednego Replied to the king O Nebuchadnezzar We do not give you

01:07:02: What it is Whether it is That I face A supernatural triumph Or the tragedy
01:07:07: Of this Of death In a fiery furnace Whichever way This falls out According to the plan
01:07:12: Of God We are not going To bow down And serve your golden image We are going To remain faithful And obedient And we will leave it
01:07:18: Into the hands of God To sovereignly dispose of us However he might see fit That is an amazing Statement of faith
01:07:23: They quench The power of fire Number six They escaped The edge of the sword Through various At times
01:07:30: Through various National and military victories Israel and those Who led Israel Escaped the edge
01:07:35: Of the sword Individuals escaped Execution Or enemy Threats at times We could say
01:07:42: That this is true Of Elijah And Elisha And Jeremiah And Isaiah All of whom Had narrow encounters
01:07:48: With death And just by faith And by the grace Of God Escaped execution From weakness
01:07:53: They were made strong And it is hard Not to see Multiple ways In which this is true Of various characters
01:07:59: In the Old Testament Of course Samson Lost his strength Because of his foolishness And then he regained
01:08:05: His strength Because of his faith So in a very real And physical sense Samson was made strong Even after he had
01:08:10: Been weak David was just A shepherd boy Whom God used To defeat a giant Goliath That's a way
01:08:16: Of being made strong After being weak Gideon remember Was the least In his father's household A poor household at that He was the least
01:08:23: Of his brethren Yet he became A leader in the Nation of Israel Number eight They became mighty
01:08:29: In war And put foreign Armies to flight This would describe Military victories Great deliverances And accomplishments
01:08:35: In Israel's history It's one of Continual oppression By enemies And so there are A lot of opportunities You read through The Old Testament To see times in which
01:08:42: Men rose up And became mighty In war And put foreign Armies to flight Number nine
01:08:47: Women received Back their dead By resurrection There are specifically Two instances of this
01:08:52: In the Old Testament And by the way Since I'm talking About women I need to make A clarification Something I said Last week
01:08:58: I don't mind Being disliked For something I believe But I don't want To be disliked In a way in which
01:09:03: I misunderstood To clarify I mentioned last week About women Ruling men
01:09:08: And leading in positions And everything I just want to clarify I have no problem With women leading Where God allows women To lead I do have a problem
01:09:14: With women leading Where God prohibits Women from leading And where men Should be leading In instances where That happens
01:09:20: It is always the case That men are weak And cowardly Apathetic And spiritually
01:09:25: Negligent And indolent So that should Make that clear Where were we?
01:09:30: Yes, women Receive back Their dead By resurrection Receive back Their dead By resurrection
01:09:35: There are two instances Of this in the Old Testament The widow of Zarephath Received a child
01:09:41: Back from resurrection Under Elijah And then Elisha Raised the Shunammite Woman's son From the dead
01:09:47: So there are two instances In the Old Testament You'll notice that The next phrase Others were tortured Not accepting their release
01:09:52: So that they might Obtain a better resurrection There is a contrast here Between that resurrection And a better resurrection
01:09:58: So that is the triumphs Of faith Affecting great triumphs Now look in Verses 35 -38
01:10:04: Of enduring great Tribulations by faith Verse 35 Women received back Their dead By resurrection
01:10:10: And others were tortured Not accepting their release So that they might Obtain a better resurrection Now you kind of feel like The tone has changed
01:10:16: A little bit in the chapter Don't you? From these great triumphs
01:10:21: To now these great tribulations And tribulations And the rest of this list All the way through The end of verse 38
01:10:27: Is a list of trials And tribulations That the righteous In every age Have had to face
01:10:32: And endure But in the middle Of verse 35 You feel like we've just Taken a hard Right turn somewhere
01:10:39: We have The tone has changed We have flipped around Gone 180 degrees The other direction We read of Shutting the mouths of lions
01:10:46: And we think Yeah that's right Shut the mouths of lions Conquer kingdoms Put foreign armies to flight
01:10:51: From weakness Are made strong That's where we're at That's what we want And others were tortured Yeah wait
01:10:56: Hold on wait Tortured? How did we get to torturing? We were talking about Putting foreign armies to flight
01:11:04: Overthrowing kingdoms Great deliverances and triumphs And now suddenly We're talking about being
01:11:09: Tortured And stoned And sawn in two And tempted And burned
01:11:15: And dying by the edge of the sword The tone of this Has radically changed That being tortured
01:11:23: Is something that can Only be endured If you have hope In a better resurrection And now the question And we're going to look
01:11:28: At that phrase again Next week in more detail The question is What instance Does the author
01:11:34: In Hebrews 11 Have in mind When he describes Being tortured And not accepting their release Because they had hope
01:11:39: In a better resurrection There really is No clear example From the
01:11:44: Old Testament Of what the author Might have in mind So it is likely Not an Old Testament example Instead It is likely
01:11:51: That he had in mind An example Which would have been Familiar to all of the Jews Because it was a matter
01:11:56: Of their Recent Relatively speaking Recent history It comes
01:12:01: Most people think And I would agree with this It comes from an incident That happened Between the Testaments The intertestamental period
01:12:08: Between the completion Of events Of the Old Testament And the beginning Of the New Testament There's 400 years in there
01:12:13: Called the 400 We refer to them As the 400 silent years Years in which God gave no
01:12:18: Divine revelation But they are not Years in which No books were written There are a number Of books that were written
01:12:23: We refer to them As some of them As the Apocrypha And they do tell Israel's history
01:12:29: Sometimes accurately Sometimes fancifully And they're not Regarded as scripture By the
01:12:34: Jews The Apocrypha They're not regarded As scripture by the Jews They were not regarded As scripture By the disciples
01:12:39: Of the Lord Or by the Lord Or by the early church Or by any Christian Until about the 16th century When the
01:12:44: Roman Catholic Church decided To refer to them As scripture So that they had Something to argue With this Up and coming
01:12:51: Monk Named Martin Luther They needed a way Of answering his arguments And so they said Well they grabbed These books
01:12:56: And said well these Are scripture too So you can't say Scripture doesn't teach What we teach Because here we have Some stuff in these books That we can say
01:13:01: Teach this So the Apocrypha Are those books Written during that Intertestamental period There's an incident
01:13:07: From 2 Maccabees Chapters 6 and 7 Where the very same Word torture Is used
01:13:12: Of an incident And I'm not going To go into graphic Detail about this But under persecution During the time
01:13:18: Of Antiochus Epiphanes And if you were here For Sunday school You learned a little bit About Antiochus Epiphanes This morning The Jews were forced
01:13:25: To renounce Their allegiance To their God And one of the ways That Antiochus Epiphanes Tried to force the
01:13:31: Jews To apostatize And to renounce Their allegiance To Yahweh Was to force
01:13:37: Feed them swine's flesh Now that might sound Like a nice Sunday afternoon To you and I But that was
01:13:42: For the Jews Who were adhering To the Word of God And the Old Testament Dietary laws That was not Something that was
01:13:48: Appealing at all And so many of them Would refuse To eat swine's flesh
01:13:54: And remain faithful To God Even under threat Of death This incident Was well known To Israel To the first century
01:14:01: Jews Because it was a matter Of their recent history In terms of Within the last Couple of hundred years It would have been As well known to them
01:14:07: And they would have been As familiar with this As we are With George Washington Crossing the Delaware River Or the heroic actions
01:14:13: Of Paul Revere The readers would have Known this There's the story Of a mother with Seven sons All of whom died
01:14:19: Rather than Disobey God By eating swine's flesh And the confessions Of these seven sons
01:14:24: Are recorded In 2nd Maccabees Here's one example of it 2nd Maccabees 7 Verse 9
01:14:29: Now listen To the confession Of this son Regarding a future resurrection And when he was
01:14:35: At the last gasp He said Thou miscreant That's a good word That we should
01:14:40: Use more often By the way For children Consider it A word you should Put in to employ With your children
01:14:45: Thou miscreant Dost release us Out of this present life But the king Of the world
01:14:51: Shall raise us up Who have died For his laws Unto an eternal Renewal of life
01:14:57: Do you hear What they're saying? We have hope In a resurrection And therefore Put us to death
01:15:02: Because we will not Turn away From the truth And we would rather Face death Because we believe
01:15:08: That the king Of all the world Will raise us up To eternal life 2nd Maccabees 7 Verse 14
01:15:13: And being come near unto death He said thus It is good to die At the hands of men
01:15:18: And to look for The hopes Which are given by God That we shall be Raised up again
01:15:23: By him For as for thee Thou shalt have No resurrection To life Close quote
01:15:29: So that was the confession It's good to be Put to death By men Knowing that The king of the world
01:15:35: Will raise us up To eternal life And thou miscreant Will not be raised up To everlasting life
01:15:40: That was the confession These men Would Were tortured They could have Secured their release
01:15:46: If they just apostatized From the faith If they just ate Swine's flesh And disobeyed The word of God And the law of God They could have
01:15:53: Secured their own release But instead of doing that They were faithful Unto the end Because they were Looking forward
01:15:58: To a better resurrection Second on this list Of horrible things Is mocking and scourgings
01:16:04: This was the common response To the prophets In the Old Testament Elijah and Elisha Were mocked Jeremiah was beaten
01:16:09: Thrown into prison Thrown into a cistern Chains and imprisonments Joseph was thrown into prison
01:16:16: For his righteous conduct Micaiah refused to cater To his message To the king Do you remember that? So he was put into prison
01:16:21: And scripture records That the king said to him Feed him with bread and water Until I return safely
01:16:26: And that king Did not return safely And the king So either somebody Recognized that the king Was foolish
01:16:32: And let Micaiah go Or Micaiah died in prison Eating bread and water Because that king Never did return safe Jeremiah was thrown down Into a cistern
01:16:42: This idea of being Imprisoned and chained For your faith Was something that would Have been very meaningful
01:16:47: To the Hebrew audience We read back in chapter 10 Verse 34 For you showed sympathy
01:16:52: To the prisoners And accepted joyfully The seizure of your property Knowing that you have For yourselves A better possession
01:16:58: And a lasting one See this is a comfort Some of the people Reading this letter To the Hebrews They knew people
01:17:03: Who had been thrown in prison They had friends They had family members They had fellow church members Who at that very time
01:17:08: Were suffering in prison Being in prison Simply because of their faith And here's the reminder
01:17:14: In Hebrews chapter 11 That some people by faith Are in prison Some people by faith Are in prison Some were stoned
01:17:20: Zechariah the son of Jehoiada Was stoned in the temple 2 Chronicles chapter 24 Says this The spirit of God Came upon Zechariah The son of Jehoiada The priest
01:17:29: And he stood above the people And said to them Thus God has said Why do you transgress The commandment of the
01:17:34: Lord And do not prosper Because you have forsaken the Lord So he has forsaken you Pretty simple
01:17:39: And straight forward message So they conspired against him At the command of the king They stoned him to death In the court of the house of the
01:17:44: Lord I think it's Jehoiada That they have in mind Here in Hebrews chapter 11 It might be That the author of Hebrews 11
01:17:50: Also has in mind Stephen Who would have been A very contemporary example Of that Of that That probably people
01:17:55: In this church Would have remembered Stephen In his grand testimony Of being stoned to death For his faith Some were sawn in two
01:18:02: There's nothing in the Old Testament That mentions this incident There is nothing There's no record of it
01:18:08: The tradition is That Isaiah the prophet Was sawn in two By Manasseh The wicked king And that tradition
01:18:14: By the way Predates the New Testament It was known To this author's audience And so it's likely
01:18:19: That if this author Is referring to Isaiah As the one Who was being sawn in two That here we have
01:18:25: An inspired affirmation Of that Jewish tradition That the prophet Isaiah Suffered that fate
01:18:31: Number six Some were tempted I think tempted To apostatize Because of their sufferings
01:18:37: And we should not By the way Minimize the temptation That exists In the midst of suffering
01:18:42: People who suffer Particularly for their faith Often face temptations
01:18:48: That are as severe And piercing And as difficult As any bodily affliction
01:18:53: And so Because the temptation To simply escape suffering By some compromise
01:19:00: Can be as vexing To somebody As any physical suffering That they are enduring It is definitely
01:19:05: A suffering That people face By faith Number seven Put to death By the sword
01:19:11: Ahab and Jezebel Did this 1 Kings 19 says I've been very zealous For the Lord This is the confession
01:19:16: Of Elijah Remember this I've been very zealous For the Lord The God of hosts For the sons of Israel Forsaken your covenant
01:19:21: Torn down your altars And killed your prophets With the sword And I alone am left And they seek my life To take it away
01:19:27: Notice here The reference to some Being put to death By the sword Didn't we just read earlier As some escape
01:19:33: The edge of the sword It's interesting That both of these things Happen by faith Escaping the edge
01:19:38: Of the sword Being put to death By sword Those two things That I'm not going to Treat you like You went to high school
01:19:46: In Clark Fork But those are opposites Escaping the edge Of the sword Being put to death By the sword
01:19:52: Those two things Are polar opposites Of one another Both of them Are endured Or accomplished
01:19:57: By faith Number eight They went about In sheep skins And goat skins That is the description
01:20:02: Of their poverty Not their luxury It wasn't just The uniform Of the prophets
01:20:08: As it were To wander about In goat skins And sheep skins These are people Who could not have afforded
01:20:14: Or did not have access To the woven fabric And the world's goods And so they were
01:20:19: Therefore destitute That's the next thing On the list They were destitute They didn't have This world's goods They didn't have
01:20:25: The niceties of life Sometimes even without The basic provisions Or bare necessities And this resulted in Them being afflicted
01:20:32: And ill treated That's in verse 37 The end of verse 37 But sometimes afflicted
01:20:38: And ill treated By the way By their own countrymen The very people That they came to serve And to sacrifice for And to do good to This is what is
01:20:47: So disturbing about The history of how The righteous are treated Is that sometimes They are afflicted
01:20:52: And ill treated By the very people Whom the Lord sends them To do good unto And the people
01:20:58: Who should receive Good at their hands Namely The word of God And correction And instruction And righteousness
01:21:04: Instead they respond To those people By afflicting them And treating them ill And number 11
01:21:10: Wanderers In deserts In mountains In caves And holes in the ground
01:21:16: And we'll refer to the We'll get to the That phrase These are men and women Of whom the world Is not worthy We'll do that next week
01:21:23: David hid from Saul In a cave Obadiah you remember Hid 100 prophets In a cave
01:21:28: From Jezebel 1 Kings 18 Elijah fled for his life And where did he go? Into a cave
01:21:34: Dressed in sheep skins And goat skins By the way Elijah went and hid In a cave You and I Would rather find ourselves
01:21:43: On the first part Of this list Than the second part Of this list Wouldn't you? I mean if you're given
01:21:48: A choice What do we learn From this lesson? We would be well served
01:21:55: To be familiar With the heroes of faith I think that's the first Lesson we should draw We would be well served To be familiar
01:22:00: With the heroes of faith Not just the heroes of faith Mentioned in Hebrews chapter 11 Now you're familiar With all of these people
01:22:06: And all of these things If you've been here For all of Hebrews 11 You say okay I'm familiar enough And I'm glad you're getting To verse 38
01:22:11: Now we can move on You'd be well served To be familiar with them But not just them We ought to meditate
01:22:17: And reflect upon The acts of faith And the things that Men and women In the Old Testament Did by faith
01:22:23: But there are people Who have lived Since the Old Testament And lived since The New Testament Whose example
01:22:29: Can also be encouraging To us We should You and I And this is This is just a
01:22:34: Note of wisdom It's not I'm laying this on you By law But you and I Should be familiar with The men and women
01:22:41: And the great saints Who have preceded us In the church age In the church area In which we live And we can do this
01:22:47: By reading the biographies Of great men and women By faith We could say That Martin Lloyd Jones Left the field of medicine
01:22:53: To preach the word of God We could say By faith That Martin Luther Turned his back On all of his
01:22:58: Comforts and conveniences And at risk To his own life Stood against The entire Roman Catholic Church And the
01:23:04: Roman Empire Of the day In order to preach The true gospel And to defend it By faith Charles Spurgeon Preached to thousands
01:23:11: And stood for the truth In his day And stood against The downgrade controversy And the liberalization Of the church
01:23:17: In the 1800s By faith John Knox Did not fear The Queen of Scots But preached the truth
01:23:22: By faith John Wycliffe Translated the Bible Into English And became known As the morning star
01:23:27: Of the Reformation By faith William Tyndale Was hated and hunted For translating the Bible And he was so hated
01:23:33: That after he died The church dug up his bones And burned them in effigy Just so they could have
01:23:39: The last word On Tyndale And time would fail me If I were to tell Baxter and Owens And Bunyan and Whitfield And Edwards Men and women
01:23:46: Of whom the world Is not worthy They've all lived Since the New Testament You and I would do well
01:23:52: To familiarize ourselves With our forefathers In the faith People who have gone before Second Faith strengthens us
01:23:59: For everything On this list Note it You and I would far rather Be in the top half
01:24:05: Of that list Than the bottom half Of that list But the truth is That you and I Can commiserate Or relate more to those
01:24:12: In the bottom half Of the list Than we can In the top half Of the list Has anybody here Put a foreign army to flight?
01:24:18: Raise your hand Anybody here Shut the mouths Of a lion? I see little kids Raising their hand
01:24:23: Because that's what they do In Sunday school Raise your hand If you want your feet Chopped off They put their hand
01:24:28: Right up They just hear Raise your hand And that's the Instinctive response We relate to the people
01:24:35: On the second half Of the list But we want to be With the people On the first half Of the list And these two halves
01:24:42: Are quite different But listen Faith strengthens us For both That's the key Faith is the key
01:24:48: To both of these For coming out of A difficulty triumphant And for coming out
01:24:54: Of a difficulty As a victim Faith is key In both instances Faith sometimes
01:25:01: Makes men victors Sometimes makes them victims Sometimes you escape The sword And sometimes
01:25:07: You are put to death By the sword Some through faith Are triumphant And some through faith
01:25:12: Are tortured Some by faith Sit in king's palaces Like Daniel And some by faith
01:25:18: Live in caves And holes in the ground Some people by faith Wear royal robes Like Esther And some people by faith
01:25:25: Wear sheepskins And goatskins And faith is manifested Every bit as much
01:25:30: In having victory In the suffering As it is In achieving victories In those triumphs
01:25:36: In fact, I would argue to you That faith is manifested More in the second half
01:25:42: Of that list Than the first half Of that list Love for God And obedience to Him Are magnified Especially when it is costly
01:25:50: Especially when it's costly Especially when our obedience Results in paying a price
01:25:56: That's when God Is glorified It's difficult to say That He's more glorified Through that He's obviously glorified
01:26:02: Through all of these things And it's difficult To put a degree on it But you and I Certainly can see How it is
01:26:08: That in the difficulties And the tribulations Of life That confront us When faith perseveres
01:26:13: Through that God is magnified Through that Like Job Remember the slander Against Job He only worships
01:26:20: And serves you Because you do good to him So God showed The reality of Job's faith
01:26:25: By taking away All the good things That he enjoyed And manifesting That Job would worship
01:26:30: And serve God Even without any Of those good things Job, by faith
01:26:37: Enjoyed the triumphs Job, by faith Endured the tribulations There's a man Whose name would be
01:26:42: On both sides Of that list But what would you Rather do? Conquer kingdoms Or be stoned in two? Conquer kingdoms
01:26:49: Would you rather Escape the edge of the sword Or be put to death By the sword? Would you rather Shut the mouths of lions
01:26:55: Or be stoned? You'd rather shut The mouths of lions I understand that That's the natural
01:27:01: Human approach To this list Lord, give me the stuff
01:27:06: In verses 33 to 35 And keep me from all the stuff In verses 35 to 38
01:27:14: God is glorified When we endure the things That are in verses 35 to 38 And we do so by faith
01:27:20: And God is going to dispose Of every single one of you In this room In one of these two ways
01:27:27: You're going to find yourself On one part of that list Or the other He appoints our times And our seasons
01:27:32: He determines the boundaries Of our habitation He's the one who sends Either prosperity or persecution
01:27:38: Tribulations or triumphs And you say How is it that I get On the first part of the list?
01:27:44: That's not yours to choose How is it that I avoid The second part of the list? Again, that is not for you to choose
01:27:51: You and I must rest In the sovereign disposal of God Trusting in Him by faith
01:27:57: That He in His wisdom In His sovereignty And in His perfect providence
01:28:03: Will dispose of all of His creation And all of His creatures You and I included
01:28:09: In the way that is most for our good And most for His glory And we trust
01:28:15: Him for that If I die putting a foreign army to flight Then so be it And if I die being sawn in two
01:28:22: I don't want that But so be it Those are our choices Those are not our choices
01:28:28: Those are the ways in which God will dispose of us Somewhere on that list But you and I can have the confidence
01:28:35: That the sufferings of this present life Are not worthy to be compared With the glory that is to be revealed in us That's what you cling to And that ultimately is what every last person
01:28:44: On this list understood You see, the reference to They did this, believing and trusting in a better resurrection
01:28:50: Doesn't just apply to those who were Tortured not accepting their release It refers to those who were victorious in faith
01:28:55: And found themselves anywhere on this list They were stoned and did not accept their release They were sawn in two and did not accept their release
01:29:02: They were put to death by the sword And did not accept their release Number four, afflictions and sufferings
01:29:10: Are not evidence that you and I lack faith See, it is It is very good for us
01:29:16: That the author put at the bottom of this list All of these horrible things Because after reading verses 32
01:29:22: Well, in fact, after reading the entire chapter From verse 1 all the way through The end of verse 32
01:29:27: We've read of all these promises That were secured by faith And these great things that were done Moses and the crossing of the
01:29:33: Red Sea And the plagues on Egypt And Joshua conquering Jericho And Rahab being saved
01:29:39: And then the conquering kingdoms And performing acts of righteousness These are all great things But then we get to the end of verse 34
01:29:48: And you and I might be tempted to think Well, if I don't have those kinds of accomplishments Then maybe
01:29:53: I don't have Faith That might be the conclusion that we would draw
01:29:59: And the point of the author Is no, this I have faith, and it is quite the contrary
01:30:05: These are men and women In verse 31 through 32 These are men and women
01:30:10: Sorry, verses 32 through 34 These are men and women of whom the world is not worthy But that also can be said of people
01:30:16: In verses 35 through 38 They're men and women of whom the world is not worthy And so it is good that the author
01:30:22: Should put this list Of horrible things in here, lest you and I think That if we don't have some great victory that changes
01:30:28: History, that we don't have that kind of faith It also is a correction To a false doctrine that we need to be aware of And that is the doctrine that teaches
01:30:36: That if I have faith, I likewise can do Great things See, if I have faith, I can slay a giant
01:30:42: If I have faith, I can step Into the lion's den, if I have faith, I can handle Poisonous snakes, if I have faith,
01:30:48: I can Drink poison, if I have faith I can do these mighty things That's a dangerous doctrine, that is what is at the heart
01:30:54: Of the word faith movement You will be prosperous and healthy and wealthy And accomplish great things and be mighty in this world
01:31:00: If you have enough faith Well, verses 35 through 38

01:31:14: Are not necessarily the mighty And the great in this world And they don't necessarily accomplish
01:31:19: The great things up in verses 33 through 34 Some of them are tortured, some of them endure
01:31:25: Tribulations This chapter has been a reminder that Faith is the active principle in all of life
01:31:32: In salvation and suffering, triumph and Tribulation, in the palace and in the Prison, you and I can have confidence
01:31:37: That God is gracious, kind and good And that our faith is sufficient To give us rest
01:31:43: In Him and in His wise disposal Of all of His creatures Let's pray Our Father, we are grateful to You for Your word
01:31:52: And we thank You for the example of these Men and women of old Thank You for all that we have learned about faith
01:31:57: And those who have conquered by faith And those who have suffered in faith We pray that the example of both
01:32:04: May encourage us And that You would give us grace to trust In Your wise disposal of us We will find ourselves somewhere on this list
01:32:11: And whatever it is that You have appointed to us We know that it is by faith that we can be Made strong in our weakness
01:32:17: As we trust in You and rest in Your goodness Thank You for Your providence and Your sovereignty And we thank
01:32:22: You that You have not revealed to us Everything that will befall us in this life But You have told us that it is
01:32:27: By faith that we will endure And that we will glorify and honor You And that we will receive the reward that You have promised
