Mark 11:1-19, So It Begins, Dr. John B. Carpenter

Mark 11:1-19
So It Begins

I. A Vivid Memory

  1. In the summer of 1978, we moved to a new house in Seminole County, Florida, north of Orlando.

  2. We had a peanut-shaped pool in the backyard with a tree beside the pool deck.

  3. On a warm summer afternoon, during our first swim in our new pool, a thunderstorm came on us.

  4. We were standing on the porch, under the overhang, when lightning struck the tree just on the other side of the pool deck, about ten meters away.

  5. One common argument skeptics of Christianity make is that, they say, the gospels were written so many years after Jesus.

  6. Not only were these amazing events that left an indelible imprint on their minds, the disciples were constantly talking to each other about these things.

  7. The idea that the Gospels are unreliable because they were written 30 years after Jesus is ridiculous.
II. It Begins with Hosannas (11:1-11)

  8. Jesus is certain about what is going to happen. He says, “You will find” the young donkey.

  9. A king coming on a donkey was a sign of peace. He’s not Mohammed on a war horse, out to conquer.

  10. Zechariah 9:9, “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.”

  11. Simon Maccabee entered Jerusalem “with praise and palm branches . . . because a great enemy had been crushed and removed from Israel” (1 Maccabees 13:51).

  12. Psalm 118:25, “Save us, we pray, O Lord. O Lord, we pray, give us success!”

  13. Simple celebration is not discipleship. Enthusiasm is not faith.

  14. Jesus knew His coming on a young donkey would be understood as a claim on the throne and celebrated.
III. It Begins with Cursing (11:12-14)

  15. He sees in the distance, a fig tree in leaf. It was not the season for figs yet, but He hoped this was the exception.

  16. In Luke 13 Jesus tells a parable about a man who had an unfruitful fig tree. He says “Cut it down.”

  17. Malachi 3:1 says, “the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple.” He’s coming expecting fruit.

  18. Jesus here shows us the dangers of having the outward appearances without fruit.

  19. Examine yourself whether you are bearing good spiritual fruit. The Lord is coming to His temple expecting good fruit.
IV. It Begins with Missions (11:15-19)

  20. The chief priests had arranged over the last few years, to allow vendors into the temple compound itself to sell their wares.

  21. They’re probably getting rich off of this racket. But that’s not what is really wrong with it.

  22. What’s wrong is that the court of the Gentiles was being crowded out by all the venders. It was like an oriental bazaar.

  23. After seeing how the Gentiles’ area has been turned into a mall, Jesus decides He is going to turn the court of the Gentiles back to its missionary purpose.

  24. Apparently Jesus was a physically imposing, impressive man. Jesus, all by Himself, throws the business people and the customers out.

  25. When some people were carrying their loads or deliveries through the temple, Jesus stood in front of them, looking stern.

  26. Isaiah 56:7, “My house shall be called a house of prayer for all nations.”

  27. The temple was supposed to be, not just for Israelites but to serve missions, for reaching people from “all nations.”

  28. The church is not just supposed to serve the convenience of God’s people but to be missionary, to be used to bring “all nations.”

  29. Jesus begins His way to the cross by returning the temple’s missionary purpose of reaching all kinds of people.

  30. It’s fine to make money, in its place. But He shows that there’s a holy place where business stops.

  31. For us, that’s first a place in time, a place in our lives where we stop trying to get a little richer and seek first the Kingdom of God and pray.

  32. Put church worshipping with the church as more important than making more money on Sunday morning. Teach your children by example that worshipping God is more important than getting rich.

  33. The professional religious people hated Jesus for coming into the temple and taking over like He owned the place.
    V. Invitation: And so it begins, their first full day in Jerusalem, at the temple. Then the disciples return with Jesus to His lodging place that evening, amazed at what Jesus had done that day. Unforgettable. Looking back on it, Peter thinks, thirty years later with all these vivid memories, Jesus knew exactly what would happen. He was in control the whole time. He was fulfilling His mission. Now, will you fulfill yours?
