- That we may know God by grace Let us sing for joy and gladness
- 20:11
- Seeing what our God has done Praise the One redeeming glory
- 20:18
- Praise the One who makes us whole In Psalm 91 verses 1 and 2 it says,
- 20:28
- He who abides in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.
- 20:34
- I will say to Yahweh my refuge and my fortress, my God in whom
- 20:39
- I trust. We're going to introduce a new song this morning which is taken from this psalm called
- 20:45
- Christ Will Be My Hideaway. I will dwell within the shelter of the
- 21:10
- God who reigns above. I will rest beneath the shadow of the mighty
- 21:24
- King above. Though a sickness hides in darkness,
- 21:33
- Though a plague destroys by day, I will stand upon His promises.
- 21:46
- Christ will be my hideaway. In You, my
- 21:55
- God, I trust. You are strong and here with us.
- 22:04
- In You, my hope remains.
- 22:10
- Christ will be my hideaway. Angels gather to protect me when they hear my
- 22:26
- Savior call. Sovereign hands are ever ready to uphold me should
- 22:39
- I fall. Safe beneath His wings of refuge,
- 22:48
- All my fears are kept at bay.
- 22:54
- I am shielded by His faithfulness.
- 23:00
- Christ will be my hideaway. In You, my
- 23:09
- God, I trust. You are strong and here with us.
- 23:18
- In You, my hope remains.
- 23:24
- Christ will be my hideaway. Though a thousand fall around me,
- 23:38
- Though death looks me in the eye,
- 23:44
- Evil shall not have the victory while the
- 23:51
- Lord is at my side. God in power reigns my
- 24:00
- Savior. I no longer fear the grave.
- 24:08
- God in power reigns my Savior.
- 24:14
- I no longer fear the grave. Through this fragile life and evermore,
- 24:26
- Christ will be my hideaway. In You, my
- 24:35
- God, I trust. You are strong and here with us.
- 24:44
- In You, my hope remains.
- 24:50
- Christ will be my hideaway. In You, my
- 24:59
- God, I trust. You are strong and here with us.
- 25:07
- In You, my hope remains.
- 25:14
- Christ will be my hideaway. Christ will be my hideaway.
- 25:26
- Christ, You are my hideaway. You may be seated.
- 25:41
- Well, good morning, everyone. I'm not preaching today, obviously. We have with us Justin Peters, who was here for our conference this last
- 25:47
- Friday and Saturday, and everything went well with that. We're grateful for everybody who had a part in setting up for that and handling that.
- 25:54
- Justin is going to be preaching today from the book of James, continuing the series that he started before he moved away from here in violation to God's will.
- 26:03
- The Lord spoke to me and told me to tell Justin not to leave, and I told that to Justin. He wouldn't listen.
- 26:09
- So he's back here today, and it is truly our joy and our delight to have him with us because he is familiar to most of you. Will you please turn in your
- 26:16
- Bibles to Philippians 1 for the Scripture reading? We're going to read Philippians 1, verse 27, and then a short passage out of chapter 2.
- 26:37
- Philippians 1, verse 27. Only conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or remain absent,
- 26:47
- I will hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind, striving together for the faith of the gospel.
- 26:54
- And then over in chapter 2, beginning at verse 12. So then, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed,
- 27:02
- I'll try it again.
- 27:12
- There we go. Sorry. Verse 12. So then, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your salvation with fear and trembling.
- 27:23
- For it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure. Do all things without grumbling or disputing, so that you will prove yourselves to be blameless and innocent children of God, above reproach in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you appear as lights in the world, holding fast the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I will have reason to glory, because I did not run in vain nor toil in vain.
- 27:50
- But even if I am being poured out as a drink offering upon the sacrifice and service of your faith, I rejoice and share my joy with you all.
- 27:58
- Will you stand with me as we pray? Let's bow our heads.
- 28:06
- Our Father, you are a merciful God, a good God, a loving God, and as your children, those called in Jesus Christ, we rejoice in all of these realities and truths.
- 28:15
- We gather here together each and every week to praise you and to honor you, to sing to you, our
- 28:22
- God, who is worthy of all this praise and honor and so much more because of the great work of salvation.
- 28:27
- We thank you. You've called us out of darkness and into light, and now we do truly, as the passage just read described.
- 28:33
- We shine as lights in this world. We live among a crooked and perverse people. We live in a nation and at a time when every position of power over us has determined to kick against the goads of your righteousness and to try and thwart your rule and your reign.
- 28:50
- The nations are raging and the peoples are plotting a vain thing, but we thank you that our God sits in the heavens and he laughs at all the scoffing of men and all of their attempts to persecute the church and to drive out righteousness from our society.
- 29:01
- And we are reminded of that again today, even as wicked laws go into effect in the nation of Canada and probably similar things even on the horizon for our own nation.
- 29:11
- We pray that in the midst of that, that you would judge the wicked in our midst. We pray that you would judge the wicked in this world.
- 29:18
- We ask that righteousness would be established, and we pray that you would accomplish all your purposes for your church, that you would protect your people.
- 29:25
- And in the midst of all of this, we ask that you would give us grace and strength and courage and unity, that we may strive together in oneness in the gospel, that we may present to the world a united front in our love for one another and our commitment to your truth and your word and your righteous standards.
- 29:43
- Give us courage to do this and to confront the lost world with the gospel so that all men may know. We thank you that the day will come when
- 29:49
- Jesus Christ will return and all the nations will be given to him, and he will rule and he will reign forevermore.
- 29:55
- And we are grateful for that hope, and we pray that in the midst of that, that you would keep us strong, fixed on that hope until that day arrives.
- 30:02
- And we pray that it would hasten, in Jesus' name. Amen. I cannot comprehend the agonies of Calvary You, the perfect Holy One, crushed
- 30:45
- Your Son Drank the bitter cup reserved for me
- 30:53

- 33:54
- Jesus, thank You What's Your enemy? Now seated at Your table,
- 34:02
- Jesus, thank You We're going to end this set with Turn Your Eyes Turn your eyes upon Jesus Look full in His wonderful face
- 35:09
- And the things of earth will grow strangely dim In the light of His glory and grace
- 35:31
- Turn your eyes to the hillside
- 35:38
- Where justice and mercy embrace
- 35:46
- There the Son of God gave His life for us
- 35:54
- And our measureless debt was erased
- 36:03
- Jesus, to You we lift our eyes
- 36:10
- Jesus, our glory and our prize
- 36:17
- We adore You, behold You, our Savior ever true

- 39:04
- We adore You, behold You, our Savior ever true
- 39:12
- Oh Jesus, we turn our eyes to You Oh Jesus, we turn our eyes to You Good morning, hope everyone is doing well this morning
- 40:38
- And what a joy it is to be back with you It truly is I very much enjoyed the weekend
- 40:44
- And it's a special honor to be able to bring God's Word to you And do that here So Kathy and I love y 'all
- 40:51
- So thank you very much for this opportunity Let's go to the
- 40:56
- Word, to the Lord, excuse me, in a word of prayer And we will begin Father, we're so grateful for this day that You've given to us
- 41:06
- For the freedom that we have to gather together As Your blood -bought sheep that You have called to Yourself Father, we pray that as we go to Your Word now
- 41:21
- That Your Holy Spirit would conform us more into the image of Your Son And Your Word has many things that in the process of our personal sanctification are hard And they may chip away at our pride
- 41:40
- Chip away at things that we have believed to be true but may not be true
- 41:45
- So Father, we pray that You would conform us now Through the instrument of Your Word Your double -edged sword
- 41:54
- And would conform us more into the image of our King, Jesus We pray these things in His name and for His sake
- 42:02
- Amen I invite you to take your copy of God's Word And open to the book of James, chapter 1
- 42:11
- James, chapter 1 As I have opportunities to fill the pulpit on a Sunday morning from time to time
- 42:17
- I've been making my way through James And I think my first sermon,
- 42:22
- I didn't look this up so I might be wrong But I think my first sermon in James was 6 years ago 6 or maybe even 7 years ago
- 42:32
- And still in chapter 1 So I'm pretty sure the sun will run out of fuel before I make my way all the way through the book
- 42:43
- So I'm going to bite off a little bit more maybe than I normally would Because I want to get through this chapter
- 42:50
- But let's look at James, chapter 1, verses 26 through 27 If anyone thinks himself to be religious while not bridling his tongue but deceiving his own heart
- 43:04
- This man's religious is worthless Pure and undefiled religion before our
- 43:10
- God the Father is this To visit orphans and widows in their affliction and to keep oneself unstained by the world
- 43:18
- May God bless the reading of His Word So just as a quick review for those of you who have not been here for the last 7 years
- 43:27
- The predominant theme of the first chapter of James is that of trials How we as Christians should respond to trials, they are varied
- 43:35
- And James says that we are not to enjoy our trials because trials by definition are not enjoyable
- 43:42
- But we can count them as joy when we rest in the sovereignty of God Knowing that He will work all of these things out together for our good and ultimately for the glory of Christ We saw in verse 12 that Jesus Christ Himself is our reward for suffering through these trials of life
- 44:00
- He is the crown of life We saw in verse 15 the deceitfulness and ultimate ruin of sin
- 44:07
- In verse 18 we looked at the sovereignty of God and salvation In verse 19 we looked at the importance of being quick to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger
- 44:19
- These are marks of spiritual maturity And then in verse 22
- 44:24
- James tells us that we are to be not only hearers of the Word but doers of the
- 44:31
- Word We are to obey God's Word And then the final two verses that we just read, verse 26 and 27, sum up what we have seen thus far in chapter 1
- 44:41
- And they make a bridge of sorts into chapter 2 And they bring up themes that James will return to in the final chapters of his book
- 44:54
- It's been said that James is Christianity in blue jeans It's a very practical book
- 45:00
- And so this morning we are going to put on our theological blue jeans, if you will
- 45:06
- James tells us in these last two verses that there are three ways that we as Christians are to be doers of the
- 45:15
- Word These three things James will introduce here and come back to later in his book
- 45:20
- Number one, here are the three things that mark pure and undefiled religion Controlling the tongue, concern for the helpless, and avoiding worldliness
- 45:33
- Controlling the tongue, concern for the helpless, and avoiding worldliness This sets the tone for the next four chapters
- 45:40
- So let's look again at the text James says, if anyone thinks himself to be religious
- 45:48
- We are immediately struck by the stark reality that not everyone who professes to be a
- 45:54
- Christian actually is a Christian There are many false professors of Christianity out there
- 46:01
- There are many people who think themselves to be religious but are not really
- 46:08
- There are two words that often denote the use of religious matters There's two words in the
- 46:14
- Greek, one is threskos and the other is eusebes Threskos denotes an outward form of religion
- 46:22
- The appearances of religion The rituals, the perfunctory things that you do
- 46:28
- The smells and bells, all the kind of outward stuff that people see That's threskos
- 46:33
- And eusebes refers to pure religion, genuine religion that comes from the heart
- 46:39
- And here James uses the word threskos This is an outward form of religion
- 46:46
- But there is no content to it, it's not real It's just for appearances This person, the one who thinks himself to be religious
- 46:55
- Is far from God He professes to be a Christian but he is far from God This is the unstable man, this is the double -minded man who is unstable in all his ways of verse 8
- 47:06
- This is the man of whom Jesus spoke in Matthew chapter 15 As he addressed the scribes and the
- 47:12
- Pharisees when Jesus says You hypocrites, rightly did Isaiah prophesy of you
- 47:18
- This people honors me with their lips but their heart is far away from me But in vain do they worship me
- 47:25
- Teaching as doctrines the commands of men These are the people of Matthew chapter 7, 21 through 23
- 47:32
- When they cry out to Jesus Lord, Lord did we not prophesy in your name Cast out demons and perform many miracles
- 47:40
- And then Jesus will look at them and say to them I never knew you Depart from me you workers of iniquity
- 47:49
- These are the ones that have a vain religion These are the ones who have a form of godliness
- 47:56
- But they deny the power thereof False professors of Christ False converts
- 48:03
- These are the ones who went out from us because they were not really of us Their religion is in vain
- 48:12
- Pure and undefiled religion Pure and undefiled religion is one, number one
- 48:18
- The first point is one who controls his tongue Who bridles his tongue
- 48:24
- James is the only biblical author that uses a bridle in relationship to the tongue
- 48:30
- And he returns to this in chapter 3 But he's the only biblical author that uses this kind of imagery
- 48:35
- And it's not a real mystery to what bridling the tongue means, right? I mean we know what a bridle is
- 48:42
- A bridle is a small thing that you put on a very large animal, a horse
- 48:47
- That controls the horse And though our tongues are small things in and of themselves
- 48:54
- They are enormously powerful, are they not? Not in a word -faith sense kind of powerful
- 49:01
- Not speak -things -into -existence kind of powerful But they are powerful in the sense that they can do tremendous damage
- 49:09
- Our tongues can do tremendous damage To our own testimonies To other people
- 49:16
- When we harm their reputation And also they can bring untold reproach upon the name of Christ When we claim to be
- 49:23
- Christians But do not act in a way that is commensurate with that And James says the one who has pure religion is the one who can truly bridle his tongue
- 49:33
- And the one who cannot bridle his tongue His religion is vain and it is worthless
- 49:41
- Now James here does not give us specifics of what bridling the tongue looks like So what we do to know what he's talking about Is to gather together other things that the
- 49:52
- Bible says About our tongues and how we can sin against God with our tongues
- 49:58
- First and foremost, the first thing that comes to our minds We can lie, right? Thou shalt not lie
- 50:04
- So the one who is a liar, the one who makes a habit of lying Is one who is not bridling his tongue
- 50:11
- And his religion is vain Another way that we can sin against God and others with our tongues
- 50:18
- Is with gossip and slander Gossip and slander
- 50:23
- What is gossip? Gossip is spreading rumors about other people
- 50:31
- That may be true, but we do not know them to be true It's possible that they're true, but we don't know them to be true
- 50:39
- And we spread these rumors in such a way that it brings about damage to the person's reputation
- 50:45
- If you engage in gossip, if you start talking about other people And you're not 100 % that what you're hearing is true
- 50:52
- But you spread it to others and that is injurious information to that person's reputation
- 50:57
- That's gossip And we've all done this But it is a dangerous sin
- 51:06
- And it's a very serious sin In fact, so serious is this sin That it is listed amongst the sins of Romans chapter 1
- 51:14
- That marks the lives of unbelievers Read Romans chapter 1
- 51:20
- And Paul lists a number of sins He talks about people who hate God, who are violent, who are proud
- 51:26
- They are boasters, they invent evil things And they are murderers And amongst that same list of sins
- 51:33
- Paul includes the sin of gossip Gossip may be fun for a lot of people
- 51:39
- Because a lot of people do it But it is a very serious sin And it is one of the sins that marks the lives of unbelievers
- 51:45
- So is the sin of slander What is slander? Slander is intentionally spreading rumors about people that we know are not true
- 51:54
- And we do it with the purpose of hurting someone else's reputation Gossip and slander are both sins
- 52:01
- And the one who engages in these things is one who cannot bridle his tongue Or does not bridle his tongue
- 52:08
- And it marks the lives of those who are unregenerate Matthew chapter 12 verse 36
- 52:15
- Jesus says But I tell you that every careless word that people speak
- 52:20
- They shall give an accounting for it in the day of judgment Dear ones, remember that Every careless word that you and I speak
- 52:29
- One day we will stand before a thrice holy risen Lord Jesus Christ With eyes of flaming fire and feet of burnished bronze
- 52:39
- And we will have to give an account for every careless word that we speak
- 52:45
- It's very serious And we would serve ourselves well to remember that Matthew Henry, the
- 52:53
- Bible commentator Matthew Henry says this Quote The man who has a detracting tongue
- 52:58
- Cannot have a truly humble gracious heart He who delights to injure his neighbor in vain
- 53:06
- Pretends to love God Say that again He who delights to injure his neighbor in vain
- 53:14
- Pretends to love God Therefore a reviling tongue will prove a man a hypocrite
- 53:22
- Another form of not bridling the tongue Is coarse jesting
- 53:29
- Coarse jesting We see this in Ephesians chapter 5 verses 3 -4 Ephesians 5, 3 -4
- 53:36
- The Apostle Paul writing under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit says But sexual immorality or any impurity or greed
- 53:44
- Must not even be named among you As is proper among the saints
- 53:51
- Not filthiness or foolish talk Or coarse jesting
- 53:57
- Which are not fitting But rather the giving of thanks Dear one, sexual immorality is not even to be named amongst the saints of God And in this same passage, in this same text, in this same thought
- 54:12
- Paul includes coarse jesting Filthy talk, foolish talk
- 54:18
- The use of foul language The use of sexual innuendo in jokes
- 54:25
- In order to get a laugh out of people It might elicit a laugh out of other people
- 54:31
- But dear ones, it will not elicit a laugh out of God It will not elicit a laugh out of God God is holy, thrice holy
- 54:43
- People may be amused but God is not amused And note that coarse jesting here is connected with And in the same context of sexual immorality
- 54:54
- Actual sexual immorality Coarse jesting is just as sure a form of sexual immorality as is lusting
- 55:06
- Lusting is not bridling the mind Coarse jesting is not bridling the tongue
- 55:14
- And the Apostle Paul, under the inspiration of God's Holy Spirit Connects these things
- 55:20
- And though it is cliche and overused nowadays The old WWJD thing that,
- 55:26
- I don't know, 20 or so years ago Kind of came on the evangelical pike and saying What would
- 55:31
- Jesus do? It's way overused But it's helpful here, in a sense
- 55:38
- The next time you feel yourself tempted to engage in coarse jesting
- 55:43
- Or some kind of filthy talk Ask yourself this question If Jesus was visibly standing next to me
- 55:50
- Would I be comfortable in what I'm about to say Knowing that Jesus is right here And if you would not be
- 55:58
- Then bridle your tongue Don't engage in coarse jesting And filthy talk
- 56:06
- So these are sins of commission with our tongues Things that we can do with our tongues that are sinful
- 56:12
- There are also sins of omission with our tongues Sins of omission
- 56:18
- And this is something that has been heavy on my heart I guess in a real acute way in just the last week or so All of us miss opportunities to share the gospel
- 56:32
- Me included I'm an evangelist This is what I do And I miss opportunities to share the gospel
- 56:40
- But sometimes we have opportunities that are just so laid Presented to us on a silver platter
- 56:48
- That are just begging for us to take it It is absolutely sinful when we do not
- 56:54
- Many of you have heard of the satirical organization Babylon Bee And maybe some of you have seen the video that I did a week or so ago
- 57:03
- But the Babylon Bee group They began by satirizing false teachers Joel Osteen, Kenneth Copeland And that kind of crowd,
- 57:11
- Benny Hinn And in more recent years they've turned more political And they satirize liberal politics
- 57:17
- And there's much there to make fun of But Babylon Bee recently put up an interview
- 57:25
- That they did with Elon Musk Elon Musk is the wealthiest man on the planet
- 57:31
- From what I'm told Sends rockets up into space And makes Teslas and all that kind of stuff
- 57:37
- Wealthiest man in the world And they sat down with Elon Musk for over an hour and a half And at the last part of the interview
- 57:44
- The last six or seven minutes or so One of the Babylon Bee guys said
- 57:51
- Well, we're a Christian ministry And so would you do us
- 57:56
- Saying, talking to Elon Would you do us a quick solid And ask Jesus into your heart
- 58:03
- And for the next six or seven minutes They made an absolute mockery out of the gospel
- 58:09
- It was clear from listening to Elon Musk As he kind of talked about Jesus He knew some
- 58:16
- Bible stuff He knew some Bible stories He knew the story about the loaves and the fish And Jesus turning the water into wine
- 58:22
- And you could tell he knew these stories But he didn't understand them at all
- 58:28
- On any level And Elon Musk was He was asking them questions
- 58:33
- I mean he was all but down on his knees Asking them to explain these things to him And they didn't
- 58:41
- They made a joke about it I am not a fuddy -duddy
- 58:49
- And I'm not against having fun And laughing about things I'm not that person
- 58:55
- But there are some things We do not laugh about There are some things
- 59:01
- That are not satirical And they're not parody And if there's anything that is not funny
- 59:06
- It is the gospel of Jesus Christ These men who call themselves
- 59:11
- Christians Say that they're part of a Christian ministry
- 59:17
- Are looking at a man Who is an unregenerate man And they made a mockery out of the gospel
- 59:22
- How much do you have to hate someone For someone to actually ask you questions about Jesus And not answer them
- 59:30
- And what's even worse I guess than that Is that you look at the interview that they did
- 59:36
- And that interview has been viewed By over two million people
- 59:43
- Two million people They are lit They have exposed two million people
- 59:51
- And counting To a false Jesus and a false gospel They are literally doing evangelism
- 59:59
- In reverse An anti -evangelism Their sins of commission
- 01:00:06
- With not bridling our tongues And their sins of omission In not bridling our tongues
- 01:00:13
- And what those guys did It'd be one thing if they didn't claim to be Christian Fine, do whatever you want to do If you don't claim to be a
- 01:00:18
- Christian But if you claim to be a Christian Preach the gospel Especially when people are asking you for it
- 01:00:26
- Sins of omission The one who does not bridle his tongue Has an empty religion
- 01:00:33
- The threskos Religious practices, religious emotions Even religious doctrine
- 01:00:39
- Even if it's sound doctrine Apart from self -control Apart from being able to bridle our tongues
- 01:00:45
- That kind of religion James says is worthless It is in vain
- 01:00:52
- That kind of religion Has no more power to save Than does a false religion
- 01:01:01
- Number two The second form of pure religion James says Is concern for the helpless
- 01:01:08
- Concern for the helpless Pure and undefiled religion Before our God and Father is this
- 01:01:14
- To visit orphans and widows In their affliction Now these two words
- 01:01:19
- Pure and undefiled In the Greek, katharos and emiantos And katharos
- 01:01:25
- That's the word from which we get our word Catharsis You can kind of hear the similarity It's a cleansing
- 01:01:34
- It's a purifying A flushing out of impurities This word emiantos
- 01:01:40
- It literally means Free from contamination So pure Undefiled religion
- 01:01:46
- Before our God is to visit the orphans And the widows In their affliction This is pure religion
- 01:01:52
- This is not a religion marked by hypocrisy This is not a religion that is marked by one
- 01:01:58
- Who is unable to bridle his tongue This is not marked by a religion Who is just about the outward appearances
- 01:02:05
- And doing the perfunctory things And the rituals and the smells and the bells This is pure religion
- 01:02:10
- That is pleasing to God And dear friends, please note that That pure and undefiled religion
- 01:02:16
- Is that which is pleasing to God Not necessarily that which is pleasing to man In fact If your religion is pleasing to man
- 01:02:25
- Rest assured It is not pleasing to God It is not pleasing to God We need to understand this so much
- 01:02:32
- That when we come and gather for worship It's not about us It's not about you, it's not about me
- 01:02:38
- It is about God And any church that has people As its focus
- 01:02:44
- Rather than God Is not a true church It's not a true church Pure and undefiled religion
- 01:02:51
- Visiting the orphans and the widows In their distress God has great concern for the orphans
- 01:02:57
- And the widows Orphans and widows back in this day and age Were the most needy groups
- 01:03:04
- They were the groups with No husband and no father And as a woman
- 01:03:10
- With no husband or as a child With no father There was no means of provision There were no social safety nets
- 01:03:17
- Two thousand years ago A woman With no husband
- 01:03:23
- Was a widow She had no means of support Very very little means of support
- 01:03:29
- And a child with no father No one to protect that child No one to provide for that child These were the most needy and the most vulnerable
- 01:03:35
- In their day And pure and undefiled religion Is that which cares for the orphans and the widows
- 01:03:41
- Why? Because God himself Cares for the orphans and the widows In fact he describes himself as such
- 01:03:48
- In Psalm chapter 68 verse 5 God describes himself As a father of the fatherless
- 01:03:54
- And a judge For the widows An advocate, a defender of the widows
- 01:03:59
- God gave a command In Exodus chapter 22 verse 22 He says you shall not afflict
- 01:04:05
- In other words you shall not take Advantage of any widow Or any orphan
- 01:04:11
- I mentioned this in the seminar Yesterday That those who take advantages
- 01:04:17
- Of orphans and widows If you want to find a prime example Of people who do that very thing
- 01:04:22
- All you have to do is turn on Christian television Because these wealthy multi -millionaire
- 01:04:27
- Prosperity preachers that fly around In private jets and live in palatial Homes and drive
- 01:04:32
- Bentleys and wear Rolex watches You know where a lot of their money comes from? Widows Little old ladies who can't get out
- 01:04:42
- Can't go to church They're stuck at home or they're stuck In their retirement home or nursing home
- 01:04:47
- And their only church Is this garbage That they see on Christian television
- 01:04:54
- They literally Deliberately exploit The widows for personal
- 01:04:59
- Financial gain These people are unregenerate Who would do that And though orphans and widows
- 01:05:07
- Were the most vulnerable The principle here The application here is broader
- 01:05:14
- The application Is anyone who is truly In need The elderly
- 01:05:20
- The sick The handicapped These are
- 01:05:27
- Those who were you to care for Those who truly cannot Care for themselves Let me tell you who this is not speaking of It's not
- 01:05:36
- Speaking of the able -bodied man Standing on the street Corner Holding up a sign
- 01:05:44
- Saying anything helps God bless you It's not Talking about that guy It's not talking about the able -bodied man
- 01:05:52
- Standing with the sign Asking for money As he is literally yards away from a
- 01:05:57
- Walmart Or a Burger King or a McDonald's Or something like that that says Now hiring It's not talking about that guy
- 01:06:04
- A few months ago Kathy and I went to Walmart We were driving out and there was literally a man Sitting down with his cardboard sign
- 01:06:12
- Something like anything helps You know Need help God bless you something like that And and this is not hyperbole
- 01:06:20
- Literally like two feet Behind him is this big sign That Walmart put up Now hiring good wages
- 01:06:27
- Benefits This is not talking about people like that I have no patience for able -bodied men
- 01:06:36
- Who will not work The principle here is that we help those
- 01:06:42
- Who are truly in need In the New Testament gives us a little bit more Clarification with this as well
- 01:06:48
- Galatians chapter 6 verse 10 The apostle Paul says so then While we have opportunity let us
- 01:06:54
- Do good to all people All people Saved and lost
- 01:06:59
- All people But then Paul says especially To those who are of the household
- 01:07:06
- Of faith Especially to those who are of the household Of faith brothers and sisters
- 01:07:12
- We as Christians should Do good to all people but our first concern Our top priority
- 01:07:18
- Are those of the household Of faith The widows the orphans the poor
- 01:07:24
- The needy the sick The handicapped people who genuinely cannot Help themselves within the
- 01:07:29
- Household of faith They are our top priority Not folks out there
- 01:07:35
- Folks in here they are our top Priority and this is Pure and undefiled religion
- 01:07:42
- Helping those kind of people The orphans and the widows And the needy
- 01:07:48
- A number of years ago Six or seven years ago Kathy and I were in San Diego I was preaching
- 01:07:53
- At a church there and this Gentleman named Tony Contacted me
- 01:08:00
- Emailed me told me he lived in the Area and he'd been following My ministry or something He called me up or emailed
- 01:08:07
- Me and ended up contacting Each other and talked to him Got to meet Tony he came out to where we were
- 01:08:14
- Tony and I went to lunch together And that just began a friendship With Tony and his wife
- 01:08:20
- Jeanette I don't know there we go have the picture Up Tony to know Tony is to love
- 01:08:25
- Tony Tony is just a Great great guy Funny as all get out just a great
- 01:08:32
- Sense of humor he had been saved Out of the charismatic movement and he would Talk to me about Benny Hinn That's how he'd say
- 01:08:38
- Benny Hinn And just a great Great guy he just loved the socks
- 01:08:43
- Off of him and he loved The Lord solid believer Wonderful husband wonderful Father Almost two months ago
- 01:08:53
- Kathy received a text From his wife Jeanette And Jeanette told us
- 01:08:59
- That Tony suddenly had a massive Aneurysm and just Collapsed Instantly just collapsed and They rushed him to the hospital
- 01:09:08
- Nothing could be done And Tony Was an organ donor so they
- 01:09:14
- Kept him alive on the machines just long Enough so they could go and Harvest his organs But Tony left behind His wife
- 01:09:23
- Jeanette and then their four children Anthony Joshua Vincent and their
- 01:09:28
- Daughter Victoria Just instantly their husband
- 01:09:34
- And father is gone These are the kind of people that we care for They're our top priority
- 01:09:41
- And there is Much to be said about the ills Of social media and all that's on the
- 01:09:46
- Internet but by God's grace There are some redeemable things about it And I did a YouTube video about Tony and his family they set up A GoFundMe and I let people
- 01:09:57
- Made people aware Of it by via my YouTube Channel and I just checked this morning And along with what
- 01:10:06
- And I don't Say this to Along with what the ministry has Given them there is
- 01:10:12
- Now well over $70 ,000 That people From all over the
- 01:10:18
- Country and Indeed around the world have donated to This precious family
- 01:10:23
- Over $70 ,000 What a beautiful thing to see the bride Of Christ act
- 01:10:30
- Like the bride of Christ and come together And the great Majority of that money came from people
- 01:10:36
- That never met Tony Or Jeanette Caring for the orphans and the widows
- 01:10:42
- This is pure and undefiled Religion It is not that the entirety
- 01:10:48
- Of pure and undefiled religion Is doing things like this But that is an important part
- 01:10:54
- Of it but any Religion that does not do this Is empty
- 01:11:00
- It's vain And it's worthless Third Point Pure and undefiled religion
- 01:11:09
- Is marked by those Who keep themselves unstained By the world
- 01:11:16
- Unstained by the world the third Mark of being a doer of the word true religion True religion
- 01:11:21
- May in a sense not be quite as Concrete as the first two that we've looked At but it is no less important And is that of holiness
- 01:11:30
- Holiness Keeping oneself unstained By the world what is the world
- 01:11:35
- The world is symbolic of this fallen Sinful state With sinful worldly Philosophies everything that the
- 01:11:43
- World is we are To keep ourselves as Christians Unstained by that Now Unstained what does this mean unstained
- 01:11:53
- This word in the greek is a Loss moss and it it means It means pure it means
- 01:12:00
- Holy it means to It's actually the same word Interestingly it's the same word
- 01:12:05
- Used to describe jesus christ Himself in First peter chapter 1 verse 19
- 01:12:11
- The lamb unblemished Less moss The lamb unblemished this is
- 01:12:17
- The same word used to describe Christ How pure is that How holy is that How unstained
- 01:12:28
- Is that perfectly Unstained perfectly pure Perfectly holy
- 01:12:35
- And it is that dear Ones for which we Are to strive
- 01:12:41
- In keeping ourselves That unstained By the world as Christians we are to be
- 01:12:53
- Unstained by the world and our personal holiness Let me say something quickly Though because what is true of us
- 01:12:59
- As individual believers should Also be true of us as a Corporate body of believers local
- 01:13:05
- Churches our churches are to be Unstained by the world as well If we are personally unstained by the world
- 01:13:11
- Then our corporate gatherings will also be Unstained by the world But evangelical churches
- 01:13:17
- Is as jeff miller this morning In sunday school said whatever that word Means anymore who knows it's overused
- 01:13:23
- And it almost has no meaning But evangelical churches At least in theory are those
- 01:13:28
- Which claim to have a high view of scripture and believe the bible Is the authoritative word of god and yet the Vast vast vast vast majority
- 01:13:35
- Of evangelical churches are Extremely stained by The world they have imbibed
- 01:13:40
- They have incorporated worldly Philosophies that have absolutely nothing to do With god but it is part and Parcel of their worship services
- 01:13:48
- And how they think and how they Try to do quote unquote worship Whether we're talking about the
- 01:13:55
- Secret sensitive movement making your church Intentionally look like the world To attract the world
- 01:14:01
- That's that's stained that That's so stained you can't even see any purity But through through that That's being stained by the world word faith
- 01:14:09
- Is being stained by the world Imbibing in the social justice Movement is
- 01:14:15
- To be stained by the world The social justice movement is Neo -marxism
- 01:14:21
- It's worldly philosophy And churches evangelical churches Even many who claim to have a high view
- 01:14:27
- Of the sovereignty of god Are imbibing this and they are being Stained by this worldly System With the social justice movement
- 01:14:37
- Comes female preachers Comes an emphasis on race And by the way how many races are there
- 01:14:44
- One One race An emphasis on race Reparations which is nothing more than an
- 01:14:51
- Endless state of victimhood A lack of forgiveness The social justice
- 01:14:57
- Movement is predicated upon a Perpetual lack of forgiveness That is antithetical to the gospel
- 01:15:02
- And a softening on homosexuality When that Social justice
- 01:15:09
- Engine comes in the door It's bringing a lot of cars along with it Egalitarian car
- 01:15:15
- Female preachers Emphasis on race Division on race
- 01:15:20
- And homosexuality all those cars Are coming in behind that engine And it's not
- 01:15:27
- That those who have imbibed in social justice At least in our circles Are outright denying
- 01:15:32
- The deity of Jesus Christ or denying That salvation Is by grace through faith in Christ They're not outright denying these things
- 01:15:40
- But dear friends mark this Anytime you say salvation Is by grace through faith
- 01:15:47
- In Christ plus Something Whatever follows that plus Gets all of the attention
- 01:15:54
- And guess what gets forgotten Salvation by Grace through faith in Christ Mark it
- 01:16:01
- It will be forgotten It's already happened Look at the
- 01:16:07
- United Methodist denomination They are now For all intents and purposes full blown
- 01:16:12
- Apostate theologically speaking Where did it begin? It began when they
- 01:16:18
- Began to ordain women into the Ministry and women began to fill the pulpits And now they're full blown apostate
- 01:16:25
- We've seen this movie before We know how it ends Keep yourself
- 01:16:31
- Unstained by the world Churches The church is not supposed to look
- 01:16:36
- Like the world By definition it's not supposed to look We're supposed to be different And so when you find a church
- 01:16:44
- Around here that looks like the world You know you're not looking at a real church It's not a real church Josh Bice made a big statement
- 01:16:51
- A couple weeks ago he's the pastor of Praise Mill Baptist Church Outside of Atlanta And he and his church left the
- 01:16:59
- Southern Baptist Convention Made big news and they cited as their reasons A liberal drift in the
- 01:17:06
- SBC which Unmistakably the SBC is drifting Liberally and then there
- 01:17:12
- Was some woke guy I'll read this to you A guy named JT English I don't even know who he is But JT English this
- 01:17:18
- Undoubtedly this social justice Warrior he gave a mocking response And he said this he said
- 01:17:23
- Quote one way to find out if there's a liberal Drift in the SBC ask Actual liberals outside The SBC if they identify
- 01:17:31
- With the theological trajectory of the SBC this stuff is Just nonsense so this liberal
- 01:17:37
- Woke guy says you know If you want to know if the SBC is really Drifting ask some of us liberals if We think they're coming our way no we don't
- 01:17:46
- And to which JD Greer Who is the former president of The SBC he responds and he says
- 01:17:52
- Quote great point I have some Liberal dialogue partners whatever
- 01:17:57
- Those are and they definitely don't think We are coming in their direction And then
- 01:18:04
- Jim Osman responded He said He said let me translate
- 01:18:10
- That for you if you want to find out if the SBC Is drifting into liberalism just Talk to people who have drifted further
- 01:18:15
- Into it than us and ask them if they think We are liberal enough yet They'll say no Indeed once you
- 01:18:24
- Unmoor From the anchor of God's word You're going to start
- 01:18:30
- Drifting with the prevailing Cultural winds you're going To start drifting And the way you know
- 01:18:38
- How far you've drifted is not To look at other liberals who are Just a little bit further down the stream
- 01:18:44
- Than you are Because given a little bit of time You're going to catch up to them
- 01:18:50
- It's to look at the authoritative All sufficient word of God that is Our standard and as Jim mentioned in his prayer this morning
- 01:18:59
- As of The last couple weeks or so maybe Even just one week or so it is now Official law in Canada Bill C4 has made
- 01:19:08
- What they call conversion Therapy illegal And it is a law that is
- 01:19:14
- Intentionally broad in its Application and it's intentionally Broad because The end of this their end goal
- 01:19:22
- Is to make it illegal For preachers to preach the gospel It is to make it illegal
- 01:19:28
- For preachers to preach a Biblical sexual Ethic And so right now in Canada A pastor
- 01:19:37
- Or a Christian in general Could be arrested For sharing the gospel
- 01:19:43
- With a homosexual Or a transgendered person Quote unquote
- 01:19:50
- That's what they call themselves It is illegal now to do that You could be arrested
- 01:19:55
- For sharing the gospel And dear friends The United States We usually lag behind Canada by a few years
- 01:20:05
- In where we go Socially and culturally But we don't lag behind too long
- 01:20:11
- And that gap is getting Increasingly small It used to be kind of a joke
- 01:20:19
- Amongst people in our Soteriological groups you know We may one day have to do prison
- 01:20:24
- Ministry ha ha you know not really thinking That would actually happen Now I can see it Now I can actually
- 01:20:32
- See it I think it's going to happen And I think it's going to happen easily in our lifetimes
- 01:20:39
- Easily I'm not looking for this And I'm not necessarily hoping this is going to happen
- 01:20:45
- But I would not be surprised I would not be surprised If my last days are spent in prison
- 01:20:52
- It might come to that What are you going to do Christian? What are you going to do right now
- 01:20:58
- Christian who works at some company And one of your co -workers Comes to work one day
- 01:21:04
- A guy that you used to know as Dan But all of a sudden one day Dan shows up to work in a dress
- 01:21:10
- And now he says his name is Danielle And he wants you to call him By his preferred pronouns
- 01:21:16
- What are you going to do Christian? If you refer to him as a he
- 01:21:23
- Which is what he is It might mean you lose your job What are you going to do?
- 01:21:32
- That's not a stretch In fact it's already happening in some places What are you going to do?
- 01:21:39
- What you should do Is to keep yourself unstained by the world You cannot refer to That person as a she
- 01:21:46
- Because to do so Is to affirm that person in a sinful delusion And it is to deny the image
- 01:21:52
- Of God in which he was created Things like this are tests Of our faith Keep yourself unstained
- 01:21:59
- By the world Corporate holiness And personal holiness Keep yourself
- 01:22:06
- Individual believer My brother, my sister In Christ Keep yourself unstained by the world
- 01:22:14
- Guard your personal Holiness Guard your personal
- 01:22:21
- Holiness I have seen something Happening in the last number of years
- 01:22:26
- In our Doctrines of grace theological circles That distresses me
- 01:22:33
- And troubles me greatly And it is this There is a kind of a culture if you will
- 01:22:38
- Within our Theological circles That is far too cozy
- 01:22:44
- With sin Far too cozy with the world It's been dubbed the young restless
- 01:22:51
- And reformed crowd Reformed guys who
- 01:22:58
- Think it's kind of cool to push the edge Just a little bit And they
- 01:23:05
- They grab on to some of that Worldliness, things that are sinful But they kind of bring it in Almost as a sin
- 01:23:12
- Almost in a way that they It's like they're trying to prove how manly they are They're trying to prove how strong They are in Christ that they can dabble
- 01:23:20
- With these things and yet not Cross the line somehow Sexual immorality
- 01:23:28
- Coarse jesting All of these things We are to flee from They are not to be even named
- 01:23:36
- Among the family Of God and yet Some of these young restless and reformed
- 01:23:42
- Crowd they're dabbling in it You see with Calvinism It's kind of a
- 01:23:48
- It's become almost hip in the last 15 -20 years It's become kind of hip to become a
- 01:23:54
- Calvinist Because it's got this robust Manly theology, you know, high view Of the sovereignty of God and it's kind of Manly and a lot of Calvinist guys
- 01:24:02
- You know, they grow their beards out Much longer than mine It's almost kind of a It's a cultural thing with many of them
- 01:24:10
- They think it's manly and hey, I have a high view Of the sovereignty of God, rightly so This church has a high view of the sovereignty of God Rightly so But don't take this high view
- 01:24:20
- This high view of God's Sovereignty as a license for sin And that's what many of them
- 01:24:27
- Are doing They are dabbling with things They are taking things that may not
- 01:24:32
- In and of themselves be inherently Sinful But it's a very short step into sin
- 01:24:40
- There's a Website that's a Calvinistic website And they have gear That you can buy, shirts and what not
- 01:24:46
- And one of the things that I'm struck by Is they have whiskey flasks And engraved
- 01:24:53
- On the whiskey flask Kill sin or it will be Killing you On a whiskey flask?
- 01:25:01
- Are you serious? Kill sin or it Will be killing you on a whiskey flask? Now Jeff For those of you who were in there this morning
- 01:25:12
- He rightly said That the Bible does not condemn Outright Alcohol, or wine
- 01:25:20
- It doesn't explicitly condemn these things So I'm not going to go where the Bible Does not go, but the
- 01:25:26
- Bible also Has to say some other things to say About alcoholic drinks Proverbs 20
- 01:25:32
- Verse 1, wine is a mocker Strong drink a brawler And whoever is
- 01:25:39
- Led astray by it Is not wise So I'm not going
- 01:25:44
- To go where the Bible does not go But I will say that With some of those things that are Christian liberties
- 01:25:52
- Friends, you've got to be very Very careful Because it is a short step
- 01:25:58
- Into a sinful state And we need To remember that many
- 01:26:04
- Of our weaker brothers And sisters have been saved Out of some of these things
- 01:26:10
- They've been saved out of these things Don't flaunt your liberty In such a way that it becomes
- 01:26:16
- A stumbling block To those who have been saved out of these things Kathy and I know
- 01:26:22
- A lady who was saved by God's grace About five years or so ago And she was saved out of a lot of things
- 01:26:28
- One of which was alcoholism And as she was a brand new Christian She talked to this pastor
- 01:26:34
- Who was doctrinally sound And he knew what she had been saved out of And she needed some guidance
- 01:26:40
- And so she called him up And he wanted to meet her at a bar What are you doing?
- 01:26:47
- Be very careful with your Christian liberty Be careful Be wise
- 01:26:53
- For your own sake and for the sake Of weaker brothers and sisters Some of these
- 01:26:59
- Reformed pastors Like to use profanity They think it's cool to use profanity
- 01:27:04
- One of them A very well known one, I won't mention his name But one of them Pretty recently made a point
- 01:27:11
- To use profanity in his sermon Like it's something that's cool There's nothing cool about that God is holy
- 01:27:20
- We are to be holy We are to keep Ourselves as unstained
- 01:27:25
- From the world as Christ is Now I don't want you to misunderstand me
- 01:27:32
- And I'm not going down this legalistic Independent fundamentalist Baptist Kind of a road
- 01:27:38
- I'm not going that direction To be holy You've got to have your hair cut a certain way
- 01:27:43
- And ladies, you've got to have your dresses down below your ankles No makeup on those faces Ladies If you don't have a
- 01:27:50
- King James Bible You're not That's not where I'm going
- 01:27:56
- With this That's legalism That's vain religion too That's vain religion too
- 01:28:03
- Dear ones Our holiness as Christians Should come From our hearts
- 01:28:09
- It should come from a place of wanting To please our Savior To live in such a way
- 01:28:16
- That honors Him That glorifies Him One of the surest ways that you can know
- 01:28:22
- That you have a different relationship With the Savior Than you did before your conversion
- 01:28:29
- Is if you have A different relationship with sin That is one of the surest ways to know
- 01:28:37
- That you are truly in Christ You have a different relationship With sin today
- 01:28:42
- Than you did before Our personal holiness should come from a place Where we want to please
- 01:28:49
- Christ And live in such a way That honors Him This is about pleasing
- 01:28:56
- God through our personal holiness I want to read to you a quote From J .C. Ryle J .C.
- 01:29:01
- Ryle was a bishop in Liverpool, England And J .C. Ryle Has written a very helpful book
- 01:29:07
- By the way on holiness Look up that on Google J .C. Ryle on holiness It's very helpful
- 01:29:13
- He says this He who supposes that Jesus Christ only lived
- 01:29:19
- And died and rose again In order to provide justification And forgiveness of sins for His people
- 01:29:26
- He died only for that That person Has yet much to learn Whether he knows it or not
- 01:29:33
- He is dishonoring our blessed Lord In making Him only A half Savior Jesus Christ did come to die
- 01:29:43
- And save us from our sins To make us right with God To provide our justification Our salvation and to secure it
- 01:29:50
- Yes He did But He also came to die that we would be a peculiar people Set apart
- 01:29:56
- Holy We should show our love for God By our obedience to His commands
- 01:30:04
- It should come from a place of love for our Savior Not to meet Legalistic demands
- 01:30:10
- But to please our King We should obey His commands Because His commands are not burdensome to us
- 01:30:17
- Colossians chapter 2 verse 6 Therefore as you received Christ Jesus as Lord So walk in Him Receive Jesus as Lord And so walk in Him In pure and undefiled
- 01:30:31
- Religion That controls the tongue That cares for the needy And that Protects and guards
- 01:30:39
- And nurtures our own Personal holiness Let's close in a word of prayer
- 01:30:50
- Father in so many ways We as your children Are We are strangers
- 01:30:57
- We are strangers We find ourselves in a strange land We find ourselves in a world
- 01:31:03

- 01:31:09
- In these fallen bodies Still with fallen fleshly desires And the world tugs on us
- 01:31:15

- 01:31:44
