0:11
Welcome to the teaching ministry of Kungsvinger Lutheran Church.
0:14
Kungsvinger is a beacon for the gospel of Jesus Christ and is located on the plains of northwestern Minnesota.
0:19
We proclaim Christ and Him crucified for our sins and salvation by grace through faith.
0:25
And now, here's a message from Pastor Chris Roseberg.
0:28
The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the 20th chapter.
0:31
There came to Jesus some Sadducees, those who deny that there is a resurrection.
1:04
They asked Him a question, saying,
1:18
But that the dead are raised, even Moses showed in the passage about the bush, where he calls the Lord the God of Abraham,
1:24
the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.
1:26
Now He is not the God of the dead, but of the living, for all live to Him.
1:30
Then some of the scribes answered, Teacher, you have spoken well, for they no longer dare to ask Him any questions.
1:36
This is the gospel of the Lord.
1:39
Grace, mercy, and peace to you from God, our Heavenly Father, His Son, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit.
1:49
All right, so we've taken the last turn here in the church year.
1:53
It's the getting towards the end, and you know what we do every year at the end of the church year?
1:56
We talk about the end of the world, right?
1:59
Now there's a lot of bad teaching out there regarding the end of the world, and the one thing I've noted, that bad teaching regarding the end
2:05
of the world always seems to create anxiety, anxiety in the person who
2:12
Now, there are a lot of bad books that have been written out there.
2:14
I remember the days, and I always muse about this, of the book, The Late Great Planet Earth,.
2:20
The Late Great Planet Earth.
2:21
That was written in the 70s, and well, Jesus didn't show up in the 70s, and so
2:28
not to be dissuaded how Lindsay doubled down, and he wrote, 1980s, countdown to Armageddon,
2:35
And everybody was talking about the politics of the day, and who was it that was going to be the Antichrist?
2:41
It was always the game, the proverbial game of pinning the tail on the Antichrist.
2:44
Would it be Nancy Reagan?
2:48
You kind of get the point.
2:50
People still do this today, right?
2:57
And you sit there, and you go, this is just wrong, right?
3:01
But even in the last 10 years, what was the big book that hit the bookstores?
3:06
You could buy it at Sam's Club, and everybody was talking about it.
3:09
The Four Blood Moons, right?
3:12
And well, no one's talking about those anymore.
3:16
And so you'll note there that everybody who talks about eschatology always seems to focus in
3:22
on the gory details and say that we're just on the cusp.
3:26
It's right around the corner.
3:27
And by the way, Christ's return probably is just around the corner.
3:32
It could be like tomorrow or 2 ,000 years from now.
3:35
Either way, it's right around the corner, because remember, with God, one day is
3:43
He's not slow, as some people count slowness.
3:45
So what we're going to do today, we're going to work our way through our epistle text, and you're going to note that I'm
3:51
going to be with the Lutheran theologians who think that the man of lawlessness is an actual human being who has yet
3:58
I understand there's a whole lot of Lutheran theologians who also have a different view.
4:02
I'm not in that camp, and the Lutherans play this game with the man of lawlessness like a game of tennis.
4:08
One generation says, well, he's legit.
4:10
He's a real thing coming, and the other say, no, no, no, no.
4:13
It's symbolic of something.
4:15
And so that goes back and forth.
4:17
The current crop of Lutheran theologians generally are in the other camp, and I seem to be way ahead of everybody
4:23
in the next generation, so I think exegetically we should take this a little bit more seriously.
4:27
So we're just going to assume the man of lawlessness is a guy who's still coming on the scene.
4:31
You kind of get the idea.
4:32
But you're going to note here, and the emphasis here is not on the gory details.
4:38
There are gory details in here, but the emphasis is what comes next, and that's the
4:44
thing that people who traffic in fear -mongering regarding the eschatology, the eschaton, never
4:50
really get to the back part of what the emphasis of the scripture is.
4:54
In fact, in our Sunday school lesson today, we'll do a little bit of work from the book of Daniel to show how that works.
5:00
And so you'll note then, if we were to put this in terms that we could all understand, the movie
5:06
Braveheart, poorly, it's not historically accurate, but it's a great story
5:12
of how William Wallace was totally betrayed by the Bruce, right?
5:18
And there he is right there.
5:25
He's fighting the English.
5:26
He's fighting for Scotland, and for freedom, and all this kind of stuff.
5:30
And there they are on the battlefield, and in the middle of the battle, the guys who were in league with the
5:36
Bruce, they leave the battlefield.
5:38
And what ends up happening is that William Wallace, well, he gets captured, and we all know how the story ends.
5:44
Him being tortured, his guts being taken out of his body, and him going, freedom!
5:50
Anyway, you get the idea.
5:54
When you read the details of scripture, as the church gets closer
6:00
and closer to the physical return of Christ, you're
6:06
going to note that scriptures prepare the church for what is going to happen.
6:11
And it's not good for us.
6:15
Scripture makes it clear that there's going to be a great rebellion against God.
6:20
That this man of lawlessness is going to exalt himself within the church itself, proclaiming
6:26
himself to be God, and like the whole world's going to go for it.
6:30
And then those who are truly Christ are going to be scratching their head going, what has bewitched these people?
6:35
And if that's not enough, he's going to wage war against the church, and for a season,
6:45
We're going to get the snot kicked out of us.
6:48
There are going to be martyrs, and there's going to be persecution, and it's just going.
6:57
And Christ has told us this ahead of time.
7:08
Because the story doesn't end there, all right?
7:13
It ends with Christ returning.
7:17
See, Jesus has given us the playbook ahead of time.
7:20
So as dark and as bad as things may come and may get, we can sit there and go, hmm, doesn't.
7:27
So if the Democrats win the Senate and win the presidency next year, or if the Republicans do it,
7:32
whichever way is your bend, you know, we don't have to worry.
7:36
It's not the end of the world.
7:39
When the end of the world shows up, Christ does.
7:41
So consider then our epistle text.
7:44
So concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered together to him.
7:48
Note his thesis sentence here is actually quite helpful.
7:51
Our being gathered to him.
7:55
This is a joyous thing that we should be looking forward to.
7:58
So he says, listen, I ask you, brothers, not to be quickly shaken in mind or alarmed either by a
8:04
spirit or a spoken word or a letter seeming to be from us to the effect that the day of the Lord has come.
8:11
Life was filled with guns and wars and everyone got trampled on the floor.
8:14
I wish we'd all been ready.
8:16
You know, someone got left behind here.
8:20
And you'll note that those trafficking in bad eschatology, even in the time of the Apostle Paul,
8:26
they were creating anxiety within Christians.
8:29
Their hearts were being shaken, their minds were alarmed, and they had feared that somehow they had
8:38
No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no,.
8:43
So the traffickers of bad books, you know, they had their own versions of guys who were writing the four blood moons in the late
8:49
great planet Earth all the way back in the time of the Apostle Paul.
8:52
He says, listen, don't let this stuff shake you.
8:55
So first and foremost, don't let anyone deceive you in any way,
9:02
Don't let anybody deceive you, especially eschatology.
9:06
For that day will not come unless the, and here our Greek word is helpful, apostasia
9:13
If you ever heard the prophecies of the great apostasy, I always like to say there's nothing great about it.
9:16
It's actually quite awful when you consider the details.
9:19
But here we have the rebellion coming.
9:21
And where does the rebellion take place?
9:23
The answer is that exegetically, when you work your way through this, the rebellion takes place in the visible church,
9:30
because you'll note that everybody who's dead and trespasses and sins, they're still on the side of the dominion of
9:38
They're still under the power of the devil.
9:41
And so it wouldn't be news or some kind of a sign if there was rebellion in the world, because
9:47
there's always been rebellion in the world.
9:49
But this rebellion takes place within the visible church.
9:52
This is a full -on rebellion against Christ himself.
9:56
I don't care that the scriptures say that women cannot be pastors.
10:01
We're going to ordain women anyway.
10:03
We don't care that the scriptures say that homosexuality is a sin.
10:07
We're going to bless these unions and we're going to call it marriage.
10:14
We don't care that scripture says thou shalt not commit adultery.
10:18
We will never confront anybody in our church who is shacking up with their boyfriend or girlfriend.
10:27
They rebel against the word of God, and this rebellion goes deep.
10:31
We don't care that scripture says to teach what's in accord with sound doctrine.
10:34
We want to hear what we want to hear.
10:38
And you sit there and go, well, that sounds a lot like today.
10:44
And you'll note that the Apostle Paul, even in his time, said that all of this rebellion against
10:50
Christ in the visible church had already started.
10:55
You see, Jesus describes the end of the world like, well, birth pains.
10:58
We all know how that starts off.
10:59
It's like, whew, I need to go to the hospital, right?
11:02
And then you get to the hospital and they hook all the monitors up to the woman who's about to give birth, and the contractions get
11:07
stronger and stronger and stronger.
11:10
And just when you think they can't get any stronger, the nurse comes in and says, oh, honey, you're only four meters dilated.
11:16
So we still have a ways to go.
11:18
And then it gets worse and worse and worse and worse and worse.
11:20
And finally, at the end, there's a baby.
11:23
So you'll note the rebellion kind of gets worse and worse.
11:26
So the rebellion's coming, and listen, the man of lawlessness is revealed.
11:30
This is the fellow who is described as the son of destruction, who opposes and exalts himself against
11:36
every so -called God or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, proclaiming
11:44
Now a little bit of note.
11:45
When you do the work here and you look at Pauline theology regarding the temple of God, that's not talking about a
11:51
rebuilt temple in Jerusalem sometime in the near future.
11:54
The temple of God is, well, it's right here.
11:57
Paul describes the temple of God as being built with living stones, you know, like the Joshua stone or the Don
12:03
Matson stone or the Bruce stone or the Danica stone.
12:06
Where are the stones that make up the temple of God?
12:08
And this is consistent in Paul's theology.
12:10
Therefore, the man of lawlessness is a churchman.
12:14
He shows up within the visible church, get this, claiming to be God himself.
12:20
And the rebellious, those who participated in the apostasy, are going to go, yeah, you're God, and they're going to worship
12:29
It's like the whole church, the whole world is going insane.
12:35
I'm supposed to worship him?
12:37
And when this all goes down, if we're alive when it happens, or if we're, you know, whoever's alive in the church is
12:43
going to go, that guy ain't God.
12:45
And they go, how dare you say he's not God?
12:50
And so you lose your life.
12:56
And you're going to know, I'm a little blasé about it.
12:58
I'm not really kind of all that worried about the details because as gory and as scary as they are,
13:05
Christ and the scriptures tell us when you see these things happening, look up, rejoice.
13:10
He's just about ready to get here.
13:13
You're sitting there going, but the whole world's going to hell in a handbasket.
13:18
And you are shocked about this, why?
13:21
Jesus told you it would be this way.
13:23
Paul told you it would be this way.
13:25
Daniel said it would be this way.
13:27
Do you not read your scriptures?
13:29
You see, these are the cues to look for.
13:32
These are not times for us to sit there and go, huh, what do we do?
13:38
You sit there and you go, ha, this is awesome.
13:40
Jesus will be here in about five minutes.
13:43
Ah, this is great, right?
13:45
So this guy, he's going to oppose everything that calls itself God, claim to be God, take his seat in the temple.
13:52
And so Paul says, listen, don't you remember when I was still with you, I told you these things?
13:59
And see, that's kind of the point.
14:02
The same admonition comes to us.
14:04
Listen, when all this goes down, don't you remember Paul told us it would be like this?
14:07
Jesus told us it would be like this?
14:09
Daniel said it would be like this?
14:12
So you know what is restraining him now, so that he may be revealed in his time.
14:16
For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work.
14:21
Two thousand years ago, it was already up and running.
14:24
But note, it talks about the fact that there's something restraining it.
14:29
So throughout history, although the mystery of lawlessness has been at work, Christ has been putting a restrainer
14:35
on it, not letting it do its full thing.
14:37
And at the end, he takes his hands off and lets the whole thing go nuts.
14:42
And so only he who is restraining it will do so until it is out of the way.
14:48
And then, then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord will kill with the breath of his mouth and bring
14:54
to nothing by the appearance of his coming.
15:01
So this lawless one exalts himself, claims to be God, receives worship from all the
15:08
And how long is that going to last?
15:12
And when Jesus shows up, all of this crazy, maniacal man of lawlessness
15:17
delusions about being God are going to come to a screeching halt because he's going to come face to face with God in human flesh.
15:24
Jesus Christ, the glorified one, the one who conquered death and the grave, the one who bled and died for all of
15:30
your sins, the one who has reconciled you to the Father.
15:33
Keep this in mind and don't discount this.
15:37
Each and every one of us, we were born into the dominion of darkness.
15:40
We deserve the fate of the devil, but Christ has had mercy on us.
15:45
He has taken his sin upon us and he has bled and died for your trespasses and mine so that we can
15:51
be reconciled to the Father so that rather than face the day of judgment and fear and receive
15:57
God's wrath for all eternity, we instead are pardoned, we are justified, we are
16:04
So the same Jesus who has had mercy and compassion on us is going to have a face to face
16:10
encounter with the man of lawlessness and the only way I can describe this, and I know I'm dating myself by using
16:16
this analogy, it would be like Hulk Hogan versus Pee Wee Herman.
16:20
We know how this is going to go down, right?
16:23
Thank you Mikey, I'm glad you approve.
16:26
I was afraid it was a little too old, you know, yeah, yeah, got it.
16:31
I remember when he played Thunder Lips, but that's a whole other, that's a whole other.
16:35
All right, so you get the idea and now I like to think of it this way.
16:39
Remember in the book of Genesis, book of Genesis, God in chapter two
16:45
took the dust of the earth and he formed a body, formed Adam from the dust of the earth and
16:51
what does he do to make him come alive?
16:55
He comes up and he breathes in his nostrils, the breath of life, and Adam
17:02
I like to kind of think of it this way, yeah, because you'll note that God kind of works, he likes to bookend things.
17:07
Well I like, it doesn't say it, but I like to think that when Jesus returns in glory to judge the living and the dead, he
17:13
sends out his angels and God's wrath is being wrought over all of humanity and it
17:19
even describes Jesus on a white horse, swinging a sword and blood up to like six, seven
17:25
stadia on the horse itself.
17:26
I mean just, it's a gory mess when you think about the details.
17:31
I like, I kind of like to think that the last guy standing on humankind is this crazy maniacal
17:37
fellow, the man of lawlessness, because remember what was the temptation in the garden?
17:41
Oh, you eat of the tree of the knowledge and good and evil, you'll be like God, right?
17:44
So God lets it run its course.
17:46
So here's this insane fellow thinking he's God, face to face with Jesus Christ,
17:52
God in human flesh, and he's the last guy standing and Jesus, it's not even like a jujitsu move,.
17:58
Jesus just goes, and he's dead.
18:04
And thus, human history in sin comes to a close.
18:15
Now, think of it this way, remember what Paul says, remember I told you these things, I
18:22
This is like the ultimate spoiler alert, you know?
18:25
You know how the story's going to end.
18:29
Have you ever had somebody tell you all the details of a movie before you went and saw the movie, and then you were mad at the person for
18:35
telling you about the details of the movie?
18:37
That happened to me when I was in junior high.
18:39
Sam Babikian, he told me all of the details about the Superman movie with Christopher Reeves, and then my parents took me to
18:45
go see it the next day, I was like, I know exactly what was going to happen.
18:48
And then there was like, yeah, it was just horrible, okay?
18:52
But the idea here is this, is that you've been given all the information about how the story's going to play out at the end,
18:59
you've listened to all the spoilers, so when all this kind of comes, you're going to sit there and go, yeah, yeah, yeah, I already know all.
19:06
I already know how this is all going to go down, and that's the point.
19:09
It's all been spoiled for you, so that you can focus on the real outcome.
19:15
The real outcome is not about some crazy guy in the church claiming to be God and the whole world
19:21
The real story, the end of the story is Jesus just goes, and that guy dies, and Jesus then
19:28
reigns and rules forever, you're being raised from the dead, you're going to reign with him in a world without end, and
19:34
you're going to be safe forever from the devil, temptation, and sin, and
19:40
all of this is given to you as a gift.
19:43
You don't even have to lift a finger to earn it.
19:49
So the lawless one will be revealed, Lord Jesus is going to kill him with the breath of his mouth and bring him nothing by his
19:55
appearance's coming, and so you'll note some more details that are in the text that the
20:01
lectionary omitted, but I think worth noting.
20:03
The coming of the lawless one then is by the activity of Satan with all power and false signs and false wonders.
20:10
We're seeing that a lot today.
20:12
With all wicked deception for those who are perishing, because they refuse to love the truth and so be saved, therefore God
20:18
sends them a strong delusion so that they may believe what is false, in order that they may be condemned who did not
20:24
believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness.
20:27
So you'll note then that with the coming of the lawless one, part of the rebellion is just crazy stuff.
20:32
False signs, false wonders, if you don't know what that's like, just watch TBN, you get the point.
20:39
Have you ever seen anybody say, in the name of Jesus, I'm going to cause your leg to lengthen and grow?
20:45
It's really, this is exactly what we were told is coming, and you have to be completely deluded to believe all this stuff,
20:52
God sends a delusion on these people who are believing these things.
20:55
So now we get to the best word in our epistle text today, verse 13, and the word is
21:06
You'll note that the word but has a tendency to kind of like erase all the things ahead.
21:10
I always love it when somebody says to me, you know, Rosevarie, you're a pretty smart.
21:15
It's clear that you've studied the word of God, but.
21:20
And then you know what's coming next, because everything they said that was kind.
21:25
But we think that you're a pretty big meany head, and that you're just a little too big for your britches,
21:31
because you're taking this Bible stuff way too seriously.
21:34
Don't you know that doctrine divides?
21:39
So you'll note that in the text, the best word here is but.
21:43
So all the gory details we've been given to them, and yes, they're scary.
21:47
It's going to be terrible, I promise, all right?
21:50
That being the case, there's a but here, and the but says, well, we ought always to give thanks for you,
21:55
brothers, beloved by the Lord, because God chose you as the first fruits to be saved through
22:01
sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth.
22:04
Yeah, yeah, yeah, we know it's going to be awful, but don't you understand this?
22:09
You have been saved through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth.
22:15
You have been baptized, united with Christ in his death and his resurrection.
22:19
Your sins have been forgiven.
22:21
You are here worshiping the Lord in spirit and in truth.
22:26
So all those gory details, eh, who cares?
22:30
So to this, then, he called you through our gospel so that you may obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.
22:36
So then, brothers, all right, here's some practical stuff.
22:38
If you want an application, this is a good one.
22:44
When all this is going down, stand firm.
22:49
It's going to be terrible.
22:50
Yeah, it's going to be painful.
22:51
Mm -hmm, yeah, I assure you it will be.
22:55
Hold to the traditions that you were taught by us, you know, the preaching of the word, the receiving of the sacraments,
23:02
praising the Lord and thanking him with our songs and with our offerings.
23:10
So when the whole world's going crazy and going nuts, you know what we're going to do?
23:15
Same thing we're doing right now.
23:18
We're going to confess that we're sinners.
23:21
We're going to hear that Christ has forgiven us.
23:23
We're going to hear the word of God, rightly taught, long gospel.
23:26
We're going to hear the call from Christ to, again, repent of our sin, of our unbelief, of our
23:33
And there's kind of where the rub is.
23:34
You see, all this anxiety that is fostered by bad eschatological teaching,
23:41
it ultimately, what it does in us is it creates doubts rather than confidence.
23:47
Doubts about the mercy of Christ.
23:48
Doubts whether or not I'm worthy to survive.
23:51
Doubts whether, well, listen, I assure you, you're not worthy to make it into the end of the world,
23:57
to make it into the new creation.
23:58
You're not worthy to stand before Christ and hear, well done, good and faithful servant.
24:06
So how do we survive the end of the world?
24:07
Oh, you see, Christ has given you that all as a gift.
24:12
You've been gifted with the righteousness of Christ.
24:15
You've been gifted with the forgiveness of sins.
24:18

24:23

24:35
Now may our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and gave us
24:40
eternal comfort and good hope through grace, and that's what he's giving us today.
24:46
May he continue to comfort your hearts and establish you in every good work and word.
24:52

24:57
In the name of Jesus, amen.
