The Confusion Christians Have About Death

Ask 10 Christians what happens the moment a believer dies, and you'll get 10 different answers. Some will say the soul goes straight to heaven. Others say it waits in Hades, either in comfort or in torment, until the resurrection.

And still others will mix in purgatory or guardian angels or loved ones watching over us from above. Funerals are full of this language. Finally at home, at peace, in a better place, and all of this spoken with total confidence.

But here's the problem. Almost none of our ideas about death comes from the Bible. The Bible actually says very little about what happens between death and the resurrection. And what it does say points somewhere different than where most of our traditional beliefs point to.

What the Bible Says About the Soul and Death as Sleep

A lot of the confusion comes down to one word, soul. Most of us have a picture of the soul as a separate piece of us, something that can detach from the body and keep going on its own, almost like a passenger stepping out of a car.

The Bible doesn't teach that concept. And once you see what it actually says about the soul, a lot of the confusion and contradictory ideas about death starts to clear up. Scripture's dominant picture of death is sleep, unconscious, restful, and temporary, waiting for the resurrection.

That image shows up dozens of times across both Old and New Testaments, and it's almost never what gets said at graveside services. That's why I wrote a book called The Sleeping Dead, the Bible's real answer about death and the afterlife.

I didn't write it to add one more opinion to the pile, but to go back to what the Bible itself says with nothing assumed. So where did all these other ideas come from, the ones that are most often believed and repeated?

That question has a real answer, and it's not a very flattering one for most of us who have inherited the traditional idea about death. I get into that in the book, but here's the short version. Somewhere along the way, a borrowed idea started to feel like the Bible's own teaching.

Why the Resurrection Matters

This book is my attempt to set the record straight. Now this isn't a topic that keeps most Christians awake at night, so let me give you three reasons I think it matters anyway. First, ask yourself what the resurrection is actually for.

If the soul goes straight to heaven at death, the resurrection becomes a formality. It reduces the resurrection to an afterthought, where you get your body back after the part that really mattered already happened.

But the New Testament doesn't treat it that way. Paul says if there's no resurrection, our faith is empty, and we're the most pitiable people on earth. That's 1 Corinthians 15, verses 17 through 19. He makes the resurrection the central part of our faith and the most important event in human history.

The traditional view quietly makes the resurrection optional. The Bible does not. Second, this has real consequences for how we pray and what we believe about the dead. Entire systems, such as prayer to Mary and the saints, purgatory, intercession for the dead, these rest on the assumption that the dead are conscious right now.

If they're asleep, that foundation is gone. And third, the Bible repeatedly uses sleep as its picture of death. Not heaven, not Hades, not a soul in transit. That word choice, that sleep language wasn't careless.

The Holy Spirit chose it intentionally, and it shapes how we're supposed to think about death, face death, grieve it, and hope beyond it. And one more thing before we wrap this up. This book is free, and it's public domain.
