The Meaning of Being Born Again in John 3

What does it mean to be born again? Now, this is terminology that a lot of times Christians don't realize they use, but to an unbelieving world that didn't grow up in a Christian home, we don't understand this.

I grew up in a Jewish home and the first time I heard that we had to be born again, I didn't know what that meant. This comes out of John chapter three, and this is one of the most known verses in all the Bible is John 3 .16.

Nicodemus and Jesus' Conversation About New Birth

But prior to that, you have in John chapter three, a man by the name of Nicodemus. Nicodemus is a Pharisee and Nicodemus comes to Jesus by night, probably by night because he didn't want to be seen by the other Pharisees.

He comes to him asking Jesus some questions and Jesus responds to him in verse three, truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of heaven. Nicodemus not understanding this asks, how can a person be born twice?

And Jesus kind of reprimands him and says, truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and of spirit, he can either enter the kingdom of God, that which is born of the flesh is flesh and that which is born of the spirit is spirit.

Do not marvel that I say to you, you must be born again. And so what you see here is he's saying born again, which actually means born from above is that we're born physically, but we also need to be born again spiritually.

It means when God changes us, he gives us spiritual life.
