00:00
If you notice in the handout, there's roads for a mind, the Scripture right underneath it.
00:06
And that's going to be our text today. And that text goes right along with our communion service as we'll be remembering and commemorating our
00:17
Lord's sufferings and deaths as we look to Him. We're going to look at this one great verse of Scripture from the
00:26
Holy Bible. I think it's a great text. And the text today is 2
00:35
Corinthians 5, verse 21. So please go with me there to 2
00:42
Corinthians, 2 Corinthians some people say, chapter 5, verse 21.
00:49
Here we have the gospel in one verse. I wish
00:56
I could have thought of this, but only Pastor John MacArthur could think of it as a veteran pastor, but he spoke on this wonderful text and he called it 15 words of hope.
01:09
Now if you count the words, it's more than 15. It's, I think, like 20 somewhere.
01:17
But if you look in the original Greek, it is actually 15 words.
01:25
But the Apostle Paul is speaking of the great doctrine of reconciliation here. And this is the foundation of that great doctrine.
01:35
Reconciliation. And if you notice in the text, this is exactly what
01:41
Paul is speaking about. Everything he speaks in context is reconciliation.
01:50
It's the gospel of reconciliation. That is our message. We are to trump to lost people.
01:59
Be reconciled to God. And here it comes to almost like a pivotal height on the mountain as it shines forth of this great verse of Scripture.
02:14
It is foundational. So hear the word of the living God. The Spirit of God speaks through the
02:27
Apostle Paul as he writes this down. For he made him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in him.
02:44
May God richly bless His words from our hearing of our ears to our perceiving of our hearts by His blessed
02:52
Holy Spirit this morning. Please bow with me in prayer. Our Father in heaven, your word causes us to tremble, but with great respect.
03:08
When we come to this verse, Lord, it causes us to fall on our knees and our hearts and take off our shoes as Moses did before the burning bush and say, we are on holy ground.
03:30
My prayer today, Lord, is speak, Lord, for your servant hears. In Jesus' name,
03:37
Amen. The same Apostle Paul in the book of Ephesians chapter 2, you can go with me there if you like, and I like to pull this in with the introduction, to the introduction of this message.
03:59
But we are not going to understand this text until we understand what Paul says in Ephesians chapter 2, verse 1 to 3, and I'll go a little further.
04:11
I'd actually read it to verse 5. And that truth, this truth is that we must understand the bad news in order to understand the good news.
04:28
We're not going to understand the glorious gospel of Jesus Christ until we understand the thunderings of the law.
04:37
That all people are condemned until Jesus, chooses to show grace.
04:48
But that all people are sinners by nature and action. This is what he says in verse 1 of Ephesians 2, notice with me.
05:00
And you, it gets very personal, doesn't it? And you, who were dead in trespasses.
05:07
Now, you might see a parenthesis, you were alive, he's made you alive.
05:14
Who were dead, in trespass tense. Were dead in trespasses, but the parenthesis, if you see it in italics,
05:26
I mean, he's made you alive is really not in the original. So it should read, and you who were dead in trespasses and sins.
05:37
Were dead. Think of that, like zombies walking around.
05:43
He says, in which you were once walked, and you which once walked according to the course of this world.
05:51
According to the prince and the power of the air. And notice what he says, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience, among whom also we all once conducted ourselves.
06:04
And the desires of our flesh, the lust of our flesh. Fulfilling the desires of the flesh and the mind.
06:12
The mind as well. The flesh and the mind. And he says again, in were by nature.
06:19
That is past tense. Were, by nature. Children of wrath.
06:28
Just as the others. Transition, verse 4. But God.
06:36
Aren't you glad for that? Where would we be today unless, but God. We would still be dead in our trespasses and our sins.
06:44
Like everyone else. Lost. Perishing. On our way to hell.
06:51
But God. But God. But God. Who is rich in mercy.
07:00
Notice what he says, rich in mercy. God's rich in mercy. Rich in compassion.
07:06
He's rich in pity. Loving kindness. And then he says, because of his great love.
07:13
With which he loved us. Even when we were dead in trespasses. You get that, what he's saying?
07:20
Even when you were dead in trespasses. In other words, what he's saying, it's nothing that we did.
07:27
In our own will power. In our own goodness. Nothing there is good in us.
07:35
There's no one good. Only God. All have sinned and come short of the glory of God.
07:42
In other words, you were dead. How can a dead man even choose God? He can't.
07:48
He's dead. He's dead. Dead, dead.
07:55
This is incredible. Even when we were dead in trespasses. Made us.
08:01
There it is. Made us alive together with Christ. And then parenthesis, by grace you have been saved.
08:09
In other words, God's unmerited favor. He chose to save us. And raised us up together.
08:16
And made us sit together. In heavenly places in Christ Jesus. And that the ages to come.
08:24
Notice the glory here. He might show the exceeding riches of His grace. In His kindness toward us.
08:32
In Christ Jesus. Praise His holy name. Now, the reason
08:38
I read that is. This helps us understand. A little bit what
08:43
Paul is saying. In 2 Corinthians 5 21. And I would like to submit to you that.
08:53
The how and what God did. And that Jesus Himself bore our sins on Calvary's cross.
09:08
And He made Him. Made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us. That we might become the righteousness of God.
09:15
And Him is all in those two words but God. This is the but God.
09:23
This is God demonstrating to us. How He reconciles sinful men to a holy
09:37
God. You know, you think of it. The gulf is just too wide.
09:46
It's impossible for a sinful man to even try to get to God. By his own merit and his own works.
09:55
That's what religion tries to do. Religion is man's attempt to get to God.
10:01
Religion is man's isms. As brother Keith has mentioned so often. It's all those isms.
10:07
It's not Christianity. It's not Jesus. Jesus said I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the
10:13
Father but by me. But how was the way made?
10:20
Well that's 2 Corinthians 5 .21. It is the but God. This is the transition.
10:27
This is how God reconciles sinful man to a holy God. So what we see all in this one verse.
10:36
Is the hope that is only in Jesus Christ and Him alone. Because salvation does not come any other way.
10:46
So this is how God demonstrates it. This is how God acts in Christ Jesus and reconciles sinners to Himself.
10:57
Let me ask you a question. How has God made reconciliation possible? How has He done it?
11:03
That's a loaded question. Here's another question. How can He, being a holy, holy, holy
11:14
God. Receive filthy, dead, guilty, vile, wretched sinners to Himself.
11:27
How did it come to Him in repentance and faith? How does He do it? It's here in this one verse.
11:37
If there's ever an evangelistic verse, this is it. This is the verse to use.
11:44
As many others. John 3 .16 is a great one too. It's the gospel in one verse. This is another.
11:51
This one here. If we can mention this and preach this word to lost sinners.
11:57
Under the power of the Holy Spirit. And point them to Jesus Christ and what Jesus has done for them.
12:04
And by the blessed Holy Spirit open their eyes. To see in their deadness of sin.
12:10
And it's supernaturally, right? Only God can do that. But the answer is really.
12:17
In this all important question. In those two questions in which it's given to us.
12:22
In this one verse. And the answer it gives to us in 2 Corinthians 5 .21. Let me say it again.
12:29
For He. Who's the He? God the Father. God the Father made
12:35
Him. Who's the Him? Jesus the Son. So God the Father made
12:41
Him. Jesus the Son. Who knew no sin. To be sin for us.
12:47
That we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
12:53
I want you to think of this. The Lord Jesus Christ has effectually. Dealt.
13:01
With the whole problem. Of our horrible sins. That deserves the wrath of God.
13:11
And He dealt with it once and for all. Now think of this now.
13:17
Once and for all. It does not need to be repeated. It was sufficient.
13:23
It was effectual. Once and for all. On the cross of Calvary. Through His crucifixion.
13:31
So now we can be reconciled to God. We were once enemies with God.
13:38
Now He makes us friends with God. We were once naked in our sins. He clothes us. In His perfect righteousness.
13:46
So now we can be reconciled to a holy God. By faith alone and Jesus alone. No no the way.
13:52
As I was thinking about this. I was thinking even when we come to God.
13:58
By faith and repentance. Faith and repentance does not save us. Faith and repentance are the instruments.
14:06
In which God gives by His grace. It's a gift. To lay hold of Christ.
14:13
He's the Savior. Think of that. Now. I know that almost sounds.
14:21
Somewhat heretical doesn't it. But. Some people say well pastor.
14:26
Are you saying that I don't need faith and repentance. To come to Christ. No I never said that. They are necessary.
14:33
They are necessary for salvation. But what I'm saying is. Faith and repentance in of themselves.
14:40
Do not save us. Like the thief on the cross. When he died.
14:47
He looked to Jesus. And he recognized that Jesus was Lord. He said
14:52
Lord. Remember me. When you come into your kingdom. One thing.
14:57
And one thing alone. He knew Jesus was Savior. He knew Jesus was King. He knew
15:02
Jesus was Lord. And he recognized his sin. That was the Spirit of God. But what I'm saying is.
15:08
The one that saves is Jesus right. Jesus is the Savior. So we need to be careful.
15:15
And. Yes the command is repent. And believe the gospel. Jesus himself preached that.
15:22
And you know this. Paul the apostle. Constantly goes through the whole book of Romans.
15:28
That faith alone. And Christ alone. Is necessary for salvation.
15:34
Absolutely. But what I'm saying is. Those are the instruments of grace. Those are the instruments of his grace.
15:41
That he gives to us. In his favor. To lay hold of the
15:46
Savior. Praise God. Amen. Jesus is the Savior. He is the
15:53
Savior. And he alone is the Savior. And he is a great Savior. Hallelujah what a
15:58
Savior. And he's done this through his crucifixion. That was the work. In which he came to do.
16:05
So now we can be reconciled to God. By faith alone and in him alone. There's no doubt.
16:11
Without any controversy. What so ever. That this text expresses. The great truth.
16:23
This unique truth. About Jesus Christ. The person of Jesus Christ.
16:29
Him crucified. That he who do no sin. To be sin for us. Now while on.
16:36
On one hand. Let me say this. This verse states.
16:42
The simplicity. Of the gospel. That a child can understand. I really believe this.
16:49
And this is the mystery of it. There's such a simplicity here.
16:55
In Jesus. And I believe God has designed it. To be that way. That. Jesus in the simplicity.
17:05
Of this truth. This gospel truth. That Jesus took upon himself. The sins of all who would. Ever believe in him.
17:11
It also makes a somewhat. Of a very difficult passage. To interpret it.
17:17
To understand and very mysterious. And let me explain why. I want you to think about it.
17:25
Let me say it again. For he. God the father made him. Jesus the son. The first person of the trinity.
17:36
Made him. Made him. That's a key word. Made him. The second person of the trinity.
17:43
Who knew no sin. To be sin for us. Some translation says.
17:50
To become sin. No sin. Sin for us.
17:55
That we might become the righteousness of God in him. I want you to think about that. If you start trying to wrap your minds around that.
18:03
It's very mysterious. It's very deep. It's deep waters.
18:11
So here we see. And how did God. Make Jesus to be sin for us.
18:16
This is my first point. That's a loaded question. Isn't it? That's a loaded question.
18:23
Let's be honest. How did God make Jesus to be sin for us? How? It's a mystery.
18:34
You look at the gospel record. Within three hours. Jesus. God darkened the sun.
18:45
Things happened. The earth. There was an earthquake. And God was shaking the earth. I really believe that.
18:52
And there was a darkness that came on the earth. But Jesus within those three hours. Folks. When he cried out.
18:59
My God. My God. Why have you forsaken me? Some of the deepest words. When the father.
19:07
And this is God the son. In his divinity. Had a oneness.
19:13
A relationship. That was never ending. Through all eternity.
19:19
With God the father. And yet. As God the son.
19:24
The son of man. Takes upon himself. He bore the sin.
19:30
Of the world. Of those who would believe in him. And there was a hell.
19:36
That came. That God. Was separated from him.
19:44
In those three hours. That is the eternal hell. That was the wrath.
19:50
That people suffer. For all eternity. For those who reject
19:55
Jesus Christ. Jesus took that. He took the full. Brunt.
20:03
I guess you could say. Or God exhausted his wrath. Upon his son. Now is that deep or what?
20:11
We will never know this. Even in eternity. That this is
20:17
God. The creator. The word. He made flesh.
20:24
Came. From glory. And he knew exactly why he came.
20:30
Because he made the covenant with the father. He comes to the earth. Think of this. He humiliated himself.
20:38
He humbled himself. To the manger. He entered into the darkness.
20:45
Of this woeful world. And then 30 years. And exactly 33. He takes his humiliation.
20:52
All the way to the humiliation. Of a cross. Then he takes the wrath of God. And we know the struggle.
21:01
That was upon him. Right before he did this. In the garden of Gethsemane. It was such a struggle.
21:08
That great drops of blood. With his sweat. Was pouring out of him.
21:14
That he knew he was about to drink. The cup. The wrath of God.
21:21
Those dregs. In which he was. That's the reason why he was born.
21:28
Now I want you to think of this. In this question. In which I ask.
21:34
How did God make Jesus to be sin for us? Folks I'm telling you.
21:41
This is true worship. Because I like for us to look at this. By God's help.
21:48
This morning. And I need help by the spirit of God. Because I'm not the teacher here. The spirit of God is the teacher.
21:55
Only the spirit of truth. The spirit of holiness. The spirit of God can really show us. And I don't think we're going to actually come to a full understanding.
22:05
Of this great mystery. Because Paul even said. Great is the mystery. Without controversy.
22:12
Without any debate. Great is the mystery of godliness. And he talks about redemption.
22:19
And Jesus Christ. So I'm dare not going to say. And tread where angels fear to tread.
22:27
That the secret things. Deuteronomy 29. 29. Belong to the Lord. But the things that are revealed.
22:33
Belong to us. The sons of men. But this is a mystery. That God has been revealed.
22:39
To us through the precious blood of Jesus Christ. On Calvary's tree.
22:46
Over 2000 years ago. And that's our focal point. Perhaps. Let me say this.
22:53
The best way to look at this. Is first of all. To understand.
23:00
The text. He. Jesus Christ. How he became sin for us.
23:06
Is to begin that. With what he does not mean. I think that would help us.
23:14
So I'm going to start there. First of all. What did he not mean. For he made him who knew no sin.
23:24
To be sin for us. What did he not mean. I think that's a good way to look at it.
23:30
As I was thinking about this text. Holy scripture clearly presents. Jesus Christ the son of the living
23:36
God. As the one. In whom there is no sin. Absolutely.
23:41
No sin whatsoever. We know this don't we. Because it's all through the word of God. It's right here.
23:48
Notice what he says. Who knew no sin to be sin for us. He knew no sin.
23:54
He was sinless. Totally. First John 3 .5 says.
24:00
And you know. You know. That he was manifested to take away our sins.
24:06
And in him there is no sin. That's scripture. No sin. First Peter.
24:14
Peter we look through this wonderful book. First Peter 2 .22. Peter says.
24:20
Who committed no sin. Nor was deceit found in his mouth. We can't go one day without.
24:30
Some deceit in our mouth. Or sinning some way. In our thought or deed. Right. We're talking about his.
24:37
Jesus entire life. Was a spotless. Sinless life.
24:45
Perfect life. He Jesus. Who is absolutely holy.
24:53
He was absolutely holy. He was absolutely blameless. He was absolutely spotless.
24:59
He was absolutely pure. How we know this. Well I think. One of my favorite verses of scripture.
25:05
Is found in Mark 1 .24. Remember we went through the. Study with Sinclair Ferguson.
25:12
On the study of Mark. And I love this part. Speaks of an unclean spirit.
25:18
That's crying out. Before Jesus cast him out. An unclean spirit.
25:28
And he says. Let us alone. Let us alone. I believe in Matthew.
25:36
It says. Have you come to torment us. Before our time. You know what that tells us.
25:44
Torment is coming to them. Torment is going to come to these. Fallen angelic beings.
25:50
Which are demons now. But I want you to notice this. Notice in Mark 1 .24.
25:56
If you are there. What this unclean spirit says. Unclean spirit.
26:02
Interesting isn't it. He asked a question.
26:09
Almost like. Asking. Permission.
26:14
Knowing that Jesus is Lord. What have we to do. We. Notice we.
26:21
We to do with you. Jesus of Nazareth. Isn't it interesting.
26:28
The revelation that comes to us. Through the written scriptures. From a demon spirit. What have we to do with you.
26:35
Jesus of Nazareth. And notice what he says. Did you come to destroy us. You know the destruction is coming.
26:45
And notice what he says. What these unclean spirits says. I know who you are. Almost makes me think.
26:51
Of also in Acts. The sons of Sceva. And the demon spirits there.
26:57
Paul we know. And Jesus we know. But who are you. Someone trying to cast out demons.
27:03
Which had no authority. Demon spirits cry out. But here they say.
27:10
I know who you are. They know who he was. And what did they say.
27:16
You are the Holy One of God. These demon fallen angels. Knew exactly.
27:23
That Jesus was. The Holy One of God. No spot.
27:31
No wrinkle. The perfect Lamb of God. Even the demons.
27:37
Know Jesus. To be Lord. They even tremble. Which the false teachers don't.
27:44
And acknowledges. That Jesus Christ to be. The Holy One of God. Acts 3 .14.
27:51
Flip over with me to Acts 3 .14. That's it. Peter is preaching.
27:59
Full of the Spirit of God. He is preaching the Gospel. And this is what he says.
28:04
To these wicked people. That took Jesus. To have them crucified.
28:10
But you denied. The Holy One. And the just. And asked for a murderer.
28:17
To be granted to you. What about the words of Jesus.
28:24
Himself. Brother Keith went to Revelation 19. I want to go to Revelation 3.
28:31
Look at this. Jesus is giving a. A word to.
28:36
To. The churches in Revelation. This is the glorified
28:42
Christ now. He's risen. He's glorified. And he says to the angel.
28:48
Now the angel means a messenger. In this text. The angels. When he speaks of angels there.
28:55
It's not the angelic beings. It's messengers like pastors. Elders. To the angel of the church of Philadelphia.
29:01
Right. This is Jesus speaking. These things says. He who is holy.
29:08
He who is true. He's holy and true. I believe that said that in the text this morning.
29:14
Brother Keith read. In Revelation 19. Jesus is holy and true.
29:21
And he says. He who has the key of David. And he who opens and no one shuts. And shuts and no one opens.
29:28
For Jesus. Beloved. To become sin. Even for one moment. Would mean.
29:34
That he would cease to be God. If you understand. What I'm talking about there.
29:41
To become sin for one moment. He would cease to be God. But scripture presents.
29:49
Jesus Christ is. The same yesterday. Today and forever. Hebrews 13. So he was.
29:57
Jesus is. And Jesus always will be. The second person of the Trinity. Of the
30:02
Godhead. No changing. John 1. In the beginning was the word. And the word was with God.
30:07
And the word was God. Well that's one point. The second is.
30:13
How we are not to look at it is. The idea. That Jesus Christ.
30:19
Became sin for us. Does not mean that he became a sinner. We know this.
30:25
Scripture clarifies this. That Jesus was no sinner. He was the perfect son of God.
30:32
The perfect son of man. Not even for one moment. Did he sin. Not for one second.
30:41
Some have said. And I say these some are false teachers. Beloved. That Jesus Christ may.
30:48
Be considered as the greatest of sinners. Sounds like a false teacher. Statement isn't it.
30:54
Because all the sins of the world. Was laid on him. He became the greatest sinner that ever lived.
31:00
I have actually heard. Some false teachers say that. Beloved.
31:07
This is blasphemy. To the highest. This is absolutely blasphemy.
31:14
First Peter 2 .24 Who himself bore our sins. In his own body.
31:21
On the tree. That we having died the sins. Might live for righteousness. By whose stripes you were healed.
31:30
He bore our sins. He is the spotless lamb of God. He is the lamb of God. How dare anybody.
31:37
Get up and pronounce. That Jesus was the greatest sinner. In this part on the cross that ever lived.
31:43
Blasphemy. Jesus. At no time became a sinner.
31:49
Zero. It does not mean.
31:55
That he was guilty of actual sin either. It does not mean he had. Guilt for sin.
32:03
Now. No one is truly guilty. Who has not transgressed the law of God. Right. Right. Did Jesus transgress the law of God.
32:12
Not one time. Jesus never did. And matter of fact. Jesus actually said.
32:18
I did not come to destroy the law. I came to fulfill it. That is a great statement.
32:25
Think of that. This is what this text is all about. Jesus fulfilled the law of God. To it's perfection.
32:32
If Jesus were guilty of breaking the law of God. Then that would mean. That he deserved to die.
32:38
He would be like any other person. Any other criminal. Dying on the cross.
32:45
Then that would mean. That he deserved to die. And his death could have no more merit. Than any other guilty person.
32:52
Something to think about isn't it. Even the self righteous pharisees. Who sent
32:57
Jesus to Calvary's cross. As we looked at. Earlier from Peter's message. Knew he was guiltless.
33:04
How do we know that? Acts 13 .28. Go to Acts 13 .28. I want you to see this.
33:10
Even the self righteous religious pharisees. Knew that Jesus was without guilt. How can
33:17
I say that? How can we know this? Because the word of God tells us. And though they found in him no guilt.
33:25
Get that? They found in him no guilt. Worthy of death.
33:32
They asked Pilate. To have him executed. They asked
33:38
Pilate. The governor. To have him executed. So if he became sin for us.
33:45
It does not mean Jesus was sin. Or a sinner. Or guilty of sin. So the proper interpretation.
33:52
Could only be found. In one teaching. From the scripture. And if we do not understand.
33:58
This one teaching. This one doctrine. From the pages of scripture. We do not understand the gospel.
34:04
And what is that one teaching? The doctrine of imputation. Folks. It's everything.
34:13
The doctrine of imputation. The doctrine of reconciliation.
34:19
The doctrine of substitution. Those three. Are the great doctrine.
34:25
These are the foundations. Of the Christian faith. Our sins.
34:33
In other words. An imputation were placed on Jesus. But they were not.
34:40
In him. They did not. Come.
34:46
From within. Because in him. Was no sin. This is where it comes in.
34:55
So how does it. How does it work out? He bore our sins.
35:02
In other words. What happened is that God. The holy God. Made him to be a sin offering.
35:09
That's what Jesus meant. When he said to Nicodemus. As Moses lifted up the serpent.
35:16
In the wilderness. On that pole. So must the son of man be lifted up. Now what's incredible.
35:25
That melts my heart. Is. The creator of the ends of the earth.
35:35
Chose to do this. Before the foundation. Of this world.
35:41
Before he even created man. And he knew man would sin. He already chose this.
35:47
And made a covenant. With the father. And the father agreed to it. That he.
35:54
Would take the sin of the world. It's really beyond us isn't it. Because we're creatures of the dust.
36:01
And creatures of the earth. And this is the creator. He bore our sin.
36:09
The sin in which we deserve. The sin that takes us to hell. Takes people to hell. That reject him.
36:17
And what happened is that God. The holy God. Made him to be a sin offering. On our behalf.
36:23
He represented us. That's the beauty of it.
36:28
Jesus represents us. Trusting in him alone.
36:35
We're reckoned righteous. By God alone. By faith. As we place our faith in the person.
36:42
And works of Jesus Christ. Folks if we're not doing that. We're not Christians. God himself declares us righteous.
36:50
All because. Of Jesus sacrifice. Why? Because it satisfied.
36:59
God. Nothing else satisfies God. But that one.
37:04
Sacrifice. That one holy sacrifice. All because.
37:10
Jesus paid it all. Doesn't that warm your heart? Doesn't that make you want to sit back.
37:18
And just worship. And love him. The claims of the law.
37:25
That no one could fulfill. Jesus fulfilled it. No one. Everybody broke it.
37:30
Even the greatest theologians of the day. Were far from. They thought they could keep it.
37:37
Even Paul the apostle. When he was a Pharisee of Pharisees. Of the tribe of Benjamin.
37:43
Said I was the most religious man that ever lived. And this is why he says. All that is dung and manure.
37:50
That I may win Christ. He understood imputation. He understood.
37:55
He understood that Jesus took his sin. And basically what he was saying is. I'm the chief.
38:00
Then he came to the conclusion. I'm the chiefest of sinners. That's where we must come.
38:08
To come to repentance and faith. The claims of the law. Have been fully satisfied.
38:14
By our wonderful substitute. Jesus Christ. And this is what imputation is all about. Let's look a little bit about imputation.
38:23
So that in him Jesus might become. The righteousness of God in him. That's the latter part of it. This is the imputation.
38:29
In other words to impute something. Is to ascribe or to attribute. To someone.
38:35
It means to exchange. The great exchange. Glorious.
38:42
That's why in the song. We saw a wonderful exchange. His robes for mine.
38:49
And there he was naked on the tree. In shame and yet. He dresses us. In his righteousness.
38:56
Just not a righteousness. But his righteousness. Folks I can't shout this.
39:02
And preach this enough. We can't preach this enough. This is why
39:07
Luther said. We must remind ourselves. And preach this to ourselves. Every single day. Because this is what saves us.
39:15
To impute. To exchange. And by the way. Luther had a text.
39:22
From this great verse. And he called it the great exchange. I've heard.
39:28
Reformed pastors and preachers. Talk about this a lot. And actually Luther is the one that preached it.
39:34
So they are taken from Luther. They didn't come up with that. The reformer did.
39:41
But before the reformer did. Paul the apostle the greatest missionary. And the greatest theologian.
39:47
And penned it right here by the Holy Spirit. I think we would. Do good to give the credit to.
39:56
The blessed Holy Spirit. Amen. Through the apostle Paul. For he made him who knew no sin.
40:03
To be sin for us. That we might become the righteousness of God. This is not only imputation. This is double imputation.
40:11
You know a lot of churches today. You go I guarantee you. You will hear single imputation.
40:16
That Jesus forgives you. Of your sins. But rarely do you hear. That he gives you his righteousness.
40:24
And that's where the victory. In Jesus Christ comes in. That he dresses us in his righteousness.
40:31
The great exchange. He had no sin in himself. He was not a sinner.
40:40
He was not guilty of sin. But our sin was imputed to him. Laid on him.
40:45
He bore it. It was attributed to him. Or you could say it was transferred to him.
40:52
So that he suffered. And took our place. As our substitute.
40:57
And he took the just penalty. That our sin deserves. And God the
41:03
Father poured out. His wrath on him. Because of his hatred to sin.
41:09
Doesn't that blow your mind? But what does that show us? It shows us God's hatred.
41:15
For sin. And it shows you. His love for his holiness.
41:22
And it shows you his love. For the believer. And it's glorious.
41:31
All that was imputed. Attributed. Transferred to Jesus. As he suffered.
41:37
And took our just penalty. That our sin deserves. And folks.
41:43
If we think about. Not only the physical sufferings. But what he went through. And he became a curse for us.
41:50
And he took that hell upon him. He took God's wrath. And he actually satisfied the justice of God.
41:59
That should bring us to the point. On our knees. And at the same time.
42:04
Through faith alone. And Christ alone. Christ's righteousness is imputed. Transferred to us.
42:10
That's the gospel. That's the gospel. That is why it's called.
42:17
Double imputation. Here we are. Once dead in our sins. As Ephesians 2 says.
42:22
Once we were enemies of God. Now we can stand before a holy God. Completely righteous.
42:28
Not our righteousness. But Jesus' righteousness. How can anyone dare come before.
42:34
Such a holy God. That. He created creatures in heaven.
42:41
Living these. These magnificent beings. For all eternity to say.
42:46
Holy, holy, holy. Lord God almighty. Could even dare enter to the presence of God.
42:52
Unless the righteousness of Christ. Is clothed. You're dressed in that righteousness.
43:01
All because. We've been dressed in God's. I'd like to say it this way. God's best robe.
43:07
Luke 15. When the prodigal comes home. What does the father say?
43:14
Bring the best robe. Kill the fatted calf.
43:21
Give him a ring. Of identification. He belongs to me. Put the best robe on him.
43:29
And we're going to have a party. That this world has never seen before. Because he was once dead.
43:35
Now he's alive. You see. The love of God in that. Dressed in his righteousness alone.
43:45
Faultless to stand before the throne. As the great old hymn says. I also like to think of it like this.
43:52
The thunderings of the Mount Sinai. Has been silenced. On Mount Calvary.
43:58
Mount Zion. Heard a sermon by Pastor MacArthur. He said this.
44:04
At the application. He said. Lord don't give us Mount Sinai. We perish.
44:11
Give us Mount Calvary. That's where we need to go. That's where we go for salvation.
44:18
Does that mean the law is bad? No. The law is good. Because it shows us our sin. Without the law.
44:25
And the holiness that God preached. People cannot see their sin. But once we see our sin.
44:30
And by God's word. At last my sin I learned. Then I trembled at the law it spurned. Then my.
44:38
Guilty soul imploring. Turned to where? To Calvary. So God.
44:46
The thunderings of Mount Sinai. Has been silenced. By the mercy.
44:52
Of Mount Zion. Mount Calvary. God made him to be sin for us. It means.
44:59
That Jesus. And Jesus alone. Although sinless spotless no guile.
45:05
Holy was treated as if he. Were not. Although he remained absolutely holy.
45:10
He was regarded as guilty of all. The sin of the world. Jesus was treated by God the
45:16
Father. As if he were guilty of all. The sins ever committed. By all who would ever believe.
45:22
Though he committed none. Beloved the wrath of God.
45:28
Was exhausted fully on Jesus Christ. And the just.
45:34
Requirement of God's holy law. Met for those whom he died. Jesus.
45:40
Took our place. As our substitute. Now we're dressed in his righteousness.
45:47
That righteousness. That is credited. To the believers account. On the righteousness of Jesus Christ.
45:54
Turn with me real quickly to Romans 3. I think. This text tells us.
46:02
Right here. Romans 3. 21 -26. Aren't you so glad for the word of God.
46:10
Aren't you glad. For this man Paul the apostle. That God chose. To be the apostle to the
46:16
Gentiles. And God revealed this to him. And here he speaks about God's righteousness.
46:21
Through faith. And notice what he says. And now the righteousness of God. Apart from the law.
46:27
Is revealed. Being witnessed by the law. And the prophets. Even the righteousness of God.
46:34
Through faith in Jesus Christ. To all on all who believe. To those who believe.
46:41
For there is no difference. For all have sinned. And fall short of the glory of God. And in verse 24.
46:48
Being justified freely by his grace. Through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus. Whom God set forth.
46:55
As a propitiation by his blood. Through faith. To demonstrate his righteousness.
47:01
Because in his forbearance. God had passed over the sins. That were previously committed.
47:08
And notice what he says. In verse 26. To demonstrate.
47:14
At the present time. His righteousness. That he might be just.
47:20
And the justifier. Of the one who has faith in Jesus. Folks there is the gospel.
47:27
There it is. That's double imputation. God's righteousness through faith alone.
47:37
Through imputation. Double imputation of our sin to him. And he became our substitute. He gives us his righteousness.
47:44
And we become the recipient. Of God's. Goodness and mercy.
47:53
And Jesus took the judgment. Of God upon himself. Because of our sin.
47:59
Having saved. Those who now believe. He now according to 1 Corinthians 1.
48:05
30. But of him you are in Christ Jesus. Who became for us wisdom from God.
48:11
Righteousness and sanctification. And redemption. As that it is written. He who glories.
48:19
Let him glory in the Lord. Now back to 2 Corinthians 5.
48:25
I want you to see this. How can we truly understand this.
48:31
Unless we see the previous verses. And I give you this. In our application.
48:40
Look at verse 17. He talks about regeneration. Therefore if anyone is in Christ.
48:46
He is a new creation. A new creation. Old things have passed away.
48:53
And it's like look. Behold all things have become new. God has done this work of regeneration.
49:00
The new birth. Being born again. And notice what he says.
49:05
In other words. God is the one that acted. If God did not act. No one would act.
49:13
We would all perish. God is the one that acted. Verse 18.
49:19
Now all things are of God. This is tremendous. Listen to this. All things of God who has reconciled us to himself.
49:27
Through Jesus Christ. And has given us the ministry of reconciliation. Folks that is our ministry.
49:33
That is our ministry to this world. That is. Not only the pastor's ministry.
49:39
This is every Christian's ministry. The ministry of reconciliation. And he goes in detail.
49:45
That is. That God was in Christ. Reconciling the world to himself.
49:51
Not imputing the trespasses to them. And has committed to us. The word of reconciliation.
49:58
What a beautiful word. In verse 20. Now then. We are ambassadors.
50:05
What is an ambassador? A representative. You know here. We got to remember this.
50:10
Every single day we wake up. We are ambassadors of God. We are ambassadors for Christ.
50:18
In other words. We represent Jesus here on this earth. As salt.
50:24
And light. And he represents us there as he intercedes. For his church. He represents us before God the
50:32
Father. In heaven. And we represent him here on this earth. And that is what we pray.
50:38
Thy will be done. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth as it is in heaven.
50:45
That is that God was in Christ. Reconciling the world to himself. Not imputing their trespasses to them.
50:51
But has committed us the word of reconciliation. Now then. We are ambassadors for Christ.
50:56
As though God were pleading through us. Listen to that. God as though God is pleading through us.
51:05
Pleading. Almost like begging. Every person we come in contact with.
51:13
We should say we plead with you. To be reconciled to God. We implore you on Christ's behalf.
51:26
Be reconciled to God. Be reconciled to God. Hallelujah.
51:32
What a Savior. Aren't you glad Jesus paid it all. Before we have communion.
51:39
Let me give you the words of a modern hymn. I love so much. We are not going to sing it.
51:45
Maybe we can print out on this wonderful song one day. In Christ alone.
51:51
Don't you love that song? Listen to these words. In Christ alone my hope is found.
51:56
He is my light. My strength. My song. This cornerstone.
52:03
This solid ground. Firm through the fiercest drought and storm. What heights of love.
52:10
What depths of peace. When fears are stilled. When striving cease.
52:16
My comforter. My all in all. There in the love of Christ I stand.
52:22
Stanza two. Stanza two. The Gettys wrote this by the way. Keith and what's her name?
52:32
Thank you. Kristen Getty. That's alright. Second, in Christ alone.
52:41
Who took on flesh. We are basically singing the gospel here. In Christ alone who took on flesh.
52:47
Fullness of God and helpless babe. This gift of love. And righteousness.
52:53
Scorned by the ones he came to save. Till on the cross as Jesus died.
52:59
The wrath of God was satisfied. For every sin on him was laid.
53:06
Here in the death of Christ I live. That's what we talked about today.
53:13
Stanza three. There in the ground his body lay. Light of the world by darkness slain. Then bursting forth in glorious day.
53:21
Up from the grave he rose again. And as he stands in victory. Sins curse has lost its grip on me.
53:31
For I am his and he is mine. Bought with the precious blood of Christ. And I love this last stanza.
53:41
No guilt in life. No fear in death. This is the power of Christ in me.
53:48
From life's first cry to final breath. Jesus commands my destiny. No power of hell.
53:55
No scheme of man can ever pluck me from his hand.
54:02
Till he returns or calls me home. Here in the power of Christ I stand.
54:13
In Christ alone. Let's pray. Father we thank you.
54:19
Lord we bow in your presence now. All because of second
54:26
Corinthians 521. Lord I confess
54:31
I do not understand the great depths of this glorious text.
54:40
But I know it so. Lord we believe it. And we believe it with everything we have within us.
54:48
And we do not believe this within our own strength. We know it is the gift of faith. The instrument in which we lay hold of you.
54:57
And repentance in which we forsake the world. Lord we cannot do none of these within our own strength and power.
55:04
But Lord we know it's you that does the work. So we glory in you. We glory in the
55:09
Lord as Paul said. In the power of the cross. It's foolishness to the world in which perishes.
55:18
But it is the only answer. It is the only remedy to their sin sick soul.
55:25
Because it was the remedy for our soul. There's no other way. There is no other way.
55:32
And Lord we thank you you made a way because we do not deserve how dare anyone take your mercy for granted.
55:40
You do not owe us nothing but death and hell.
55:46
That's what you really owe us. And in that sense that would be justice. It would be absolutely just for you to send us to hell.
55:57
As many perish there now and cries out the harvest is past.
56:08
Lord today is the day of salvation. May we not delay in preaching this great gospel.
56:15
And may we not procrastinate. And God forgive us if we have. Forgive us
56:20
Lord if our soul has not been stirred to know you more and point people to Jesus.
56:28
And say behold the Lamb of God which takes away the sin of the world. We thank you and we glorify you in Jesus name.
