Systematic Theology (part 3) - Doctrine Of God

00:01
What am I? I'm the longest book in the
00:06
New Testament. I contain 50 % of material that's not found anywhere else in the
00:15
Bible. I have at least 15 unique parables in me.
00:24
I start off with the beginning of Jesus with the baptism, and end with the Emmaus road and ascension.
00:33
I'm derived from eyewitness accounts of the Lord Jesus. And of course, you know the answer to the question.
00:40
And who am I? The Gospel of Jesus according to Luke. Please turn your Bibles to chapter 1 as we're marching through the
00:47
Gospel of Luke. Gospel means good news. And I have good news for you this morning that Jesus has been raised from the dead and that He has had
00:56
His minister, Luke, by the power of the Spirit of God, give us an account of His life before He was born and after He was raised from the dead.
01:06
And this is one of those books that's one of the most exciting books in all the Bible. We learn about the boyhood of Jesus, His baptism,
01:14
His ministry in Galilee when He calls the 12 disciples to Himself. He casts out demons.
01:20
He heals women. He sends out the 12. He feeds the multitude. He goes to Jerusalem and preaches along the way with all kinds of parables.
01:30
Of course, Judas turns against the Lord Jesus. And there's the Lord's Supper and Passover and garden,
01:36
Gethsemane, agony. Jesus is arrested. He's tried. He's killed. And He's raised from the dead.
01:42
He has a conversation on the Emmaus Road and then He is ascended into heaven. And what we do at this church, if you're new to the church, we're just preaching through the
01:50
Bible verse by verse in a Christ -centered way, which is very easy when you're in the Gospel of Luke because everything drives to chapter 1, verse 4.
02:00
Remember chapter 1, verse 4, that you may have certainty concerning the things you have been taught.
02:06
Luke wants to make sure you, dear Christian, and even if you're not a Christian, that you know these are the facts of the case.
02:13
I believe it was Luther who said something like, Jesus died. That's history. Jesus died for sins.
02:21
That's theology. And Jesus died for sinners like me. That's wonderful.
02:26
And so everything revolves around this. Sometimes in our lives, we say to ourselves, it's so difficult to live with the trials that I have that are the truths of Scripture really true?
02:39
Is Jesus alive? Am I wasting my whole life for something that's not true? Look at all the other people.
02:45
They seem to be having a nice life and they don't believe in Jesus. And so this is a really good book for Christians to say, yes, in fact, these things are true.
02:53
There's an orderly account written by Luke inspired by the Spirit of God. And you just see from the beginning to the end, here is the
02:59
Lord Jesus in all His glory. And you say, that's right. There's no one like Jesus. No one preached like He did.
03:05
No one acted like He did. Nobody could forgive sins like He did. And it's true. I believe everything in this
03:11
Gospel and I believe that it helps my assurance and my certainty even in difficult times.
03:18
Now we're up to chapter 1, verses 46 -56 where Mary sings a song.
03:26
As you know, there's the foretelling of the birth of John the Baptist and we all knew what was going to happen right after that when
03:32
John the Baptist comes on the scene, something else is going to happen. And when the forerunner comes, prophesied in Malachi 400 years earlier that when
03:41
Elijah, someone in the spirit of Elijah comes, a forerunner before the King, then the
03:46
King's certainly going to come. And so we see John the Baptist and his birth foretold. And then we see in verses 26 and following,
03:54
Jesus's birth foretold. And while Zechariah, the priest, didn't believe Gabriel who was talking the words of God sent by God, Mary, in fact, did.
04:05
And she visits Elizabeth and we know what happened there. And then Mary begins to sing a song of praise.
04:13
If you'd like to know what I'm after today when I'm preaching, I think preachers should have a goal or a purpose.
04:18
Here's my purpose, that you sing this song with Mary regularly, that you sing this song with Mary.
04:25
And you can even see by the way it's indented with some margin that's larger, verses 46 through 55, it's really a hymn, it's a psalm.
04:35
And I would say this to you, when you read the Psalms, the book of Psalms, what do you say?
04:40
Oh, Psalm 51, that's for David. He sinned against Uriah. He sinned against Bathsheba.
04:46
He sinned against Israel. That's a nice confession and penitent psalm for David. Is that what you say?
04:53
I hope you say that, but I hope you say much more. Don't you with David cry out and say against you and you only
05:00
God have I sinned and done what was evil in your sight. Oh God, create in me a clean heart.
05:06
Using the language of making things out of nothing in Genesis 1 about God created the heavens and the earth.
05:12
God, in me I need a new heart. Don't you read the Psalms? Not just analytically, but you sing along with them.
05:18
When you say Psalm 23, the Lord is my shepherd, you don't just say, yeah, the shepherd is
05:23
David's shepherd. You say, the Lord is what? My shepherd. So it's the exact same thing here.
05:28
This is not a song to be analyzed and looked at and say, isn't Mary wonderful? Although she was blessed among women.
05:35
But it's a song for you to look at and for me to look at and say, that's the kind of song I'd like to sing.
05:41
That's the kind of song that I should be singing knowing who God is in spite of my circumstances. So my goal today is super simple.
05:48
We're gonna walk through this part two of Mary's song of praise.
05:53
And I want you to be able to sing with her. By the way, if you're a
05:58
Christian, you'll be able to sing this song by the power of the Holy Spirit. Remember last week, by the way,
06:05
I said our worship service is set up with kind of a flow. There's Revelation read, Old Testament, and then we respond with what?
06:13
Singing, because when you see God's hand in something, in nature or in scripture, then you sing.
06:20
And then we have the New Testament reading and then we have singing. And it goes back and forth like that.
06:26
Well, guess what? Mary was told she was going to birth the Messiah. She's a virgin and the
06:32
Spirit of God hovers over her and makes sure that baby Jesus inside of her is going to be perfectly holy so He can die for the sins of others.
06:40
If He was sinful, He'd have to die for His own sins. And what does Mary do? When there's Revelation to Mary, she responds with what?
06:48
She sits on her hands and she zips her lip. No, you see it even here.
06:54
This Revelation response. There's Revelation, there's response. You see a baby being born, natural revelation, and you say what?
07:01
Think I told you when Maddie and Gracie were born here in Worcester? Of course, there's always a fight between our children. Not a big fight, small
07:08
F fight, because two children were born in California and two were born in St. Vincent's. Worcester, Mass.
07:13
Who's better? Who's on first? And so, actually, Maddie was born at the old
07:19
St. Vincent's. Gracie was born at the new St. Vincent's. And when both of those children were born, out they came, and you know, just that moment where you're thinking there's a baby.
07:28
And I said, because Revelation demands response. I said, ain't evolution grand?
07:37
The nurses gave me a sedative. And so, you just notice that in Scripture.
07:45
By the way, when something really good happens to you, if anyone is cheerful, James 5 says, let them what?
07:52
Sing. And we're singing people. And we don't have the notes. But we have this great song that we're supposed to sing along with.
08:02
It's called the Magnificat. Why? Because remember in verse 46, Mary said, my soul magnifies the
08:09
Lord. That word magnifies is the first word in the original, putting emphasis. And in Latin, magnificat means to magnify.
08:16
It means to enlarge. It means to have a good view of God. This week,
08:21
I did my own homework that I asked you to do as well, or suggested. And I found my old magnifying glass for my grandmother, and I set it out on my counter to remember that I'm either going to magnify my problems, my health problems, my personal problems, other kind of things, or the magnifying glass needs to be on who
08:41
God is. And of course, when I magnify God, when Mary magnifies God, when you magnify God, you're not making him bigger.
08:48
You're not giving him something that he's lacking because God is God. And if I take my magnifying glass and I look at my watch,
08:55
I'm not doing anything to the watch, but my perception of the watch is more detailed. And I can see, oh, those features are enlarged.
09:02
And I can see that tiny little number that tells me that it's May 21st, et cetera. So when
09:07
Mary is magnifying God, she's trying to get a good vision of who he is and reflect upon that.
09:13
And so she, with her soul, with her spirit, begins to sing like David, oh, magnify the
09:19
Lord with me. We have troubles, we have trials.
09:30
I believe last week I said, let's have a template for an outline how we can sing like Mary in spite of our problems and our trials.
09:39
How can you sing for joy, even though there's difficulties? We saw last week, remember?
09:45
Number one, how do you sing for joy? One, remember your lost condition. It's good for Christians not to have their nose rubbed in their sinful condition, but to remember.
09:56
And so do you see even Mary doing that in verse 17? God, my Savior. Mary knew that she was a sinner.
10:02
She needed a Savior. And she is reminded of that. And when you realize you're sinful and God has saved you anyway, when you realize what you deserve and what you get, then you have great praise.
10:14
I've often said and tried to preach this to my own heart, that if you buy the world's selling point that says you deserve it all, the world never delivers.
10:24
And the difference is grief, anxiety, bad moods.
10:31
But if you realize what you deserve, what I deserve because of sin, sin against a holy
10:36
God that is eternal hell, and then what we get, the Spirit of God today, forgiveness, reconciliation, we're right with God and future in heaven with God Himself worshiping the
10:47
Lamb on the throne, the difference there is what? Praise. And so when you remember your lost condition, just remember, you say to yourself, what if I would have died in my sins?
10:58
Where would I have gone? It's good for Mary, she called Jesus Savior and it's good for us to remember.
11:07
I mean, remember before you were saved, if you were like me? I didn't know how bad
11:13
I was before I got saved. Did you? Did you really realize how bad your fallen condition was?
11:19
I mean, I thought I was living it up. I thought I had Jesus as a little health insurance, a little life insurance, a little hell insurance.
11:26
And of course, I believed in Jesus. I wouldn't believe in any other kind of God, but it was a fake knowledge. It was a false knowledge.
11:33
And my mind was set on the flesh. And the Bible says then we're hostile to God. And so Mary says, you know what?
11:41
I need a Savior. She goes on to say in verse 48, I have a humble estate. I'm a servant.
11:48
And she just begins to realize her condition between a holy God and herself is a big gap and she can't do anything about it.
11:59
And so we looked at number one, remember your lost condition. Number two, we talked about rehearsing the truths about who
12:04
God is. Rehearsing the truths about who God is. So you'd like to praise God even though, even though the trials.
12:12
Remember your lost condition and then remember who God is. Specifically, look at some of the titles for God, the names of God in verses 46 through 55.
12:23
Verse 46, the Lord. He's the Sovereign King. As we just mentioned a moment ago.
12:29
In verse 47, God, the Creator, my Savior. Verse 49, literally the
12:35
Mighty One. Holy is His name. What we do when we're in a big trial and we say, do you know what?
12:43
I'm focused on myself. The magnifying glass is on myself. The magnifying glass is on my own problems.
12:49
They keep getting bigger and bigger and bigger and they're multiplying. I need to have my direction someplace else.
12:55
For Mary, she could have said, what am I gonna do? I'm gonna look pregnant. I'm a virgin. This is not gonna go well.
13:01
I'm gonna have to tell people I never slept with Joseph. They're gonna all think I did and I'm lying. She could have got going over and over and over and over but she lifts her eyes upwardly and she remembers who
13:12
God is. I have lots of problems in my life. Here's one of my problems if I'm not very diligent and that is
13:20
I somehow disassociate Jesus from his benefits.
13:27
I know about reconciliation. I know about redemption. I know about propitiation, assuaging
13:32
God's wrath. I know about forgiveness. I know about justification. I know about active obedience of Christ.
13:38
I know about double imputation. Are those things good to know about? I hope so. They're in the Bible. But who's the one who gave me all those?
13:46
And for Mary, while she's going to talk about the deeds of God, she's not going to forget the one who gave them those blessings to her.
13:56
Sinclair Ferguson said, while we can distinguish Christ's person and his work in analytical theological categories, they are inseparable from each other.
14:06
Since there's no work of Christ that takes place abstracted from and in that sense outside of his person, the blessings of Christ's work cannot be appropriated apart from receiving
14:18
Christ Himself with all his benefits. That's the total price. When you get Jesus, you get the benefits.
14:24
And for Mary, Sovereign, God, Lord, Savior, Mighty One, Holy is
14:30
His name. And now we move to number three. How to sing for joy in spite of your circumstances.
14:39
Remember your lost condition. Rehearse the truths about who Jesus is. Number three, reflect on what
14:45
Jesus did and will do. So it's pretty simple when you think about praising
14:51
God. Who is He? What He's done. If I were to say to you, how would I praise God? Well, think about who
14:56
He is and what He's done. I mean, we just started off with a little something different. Oh yes, let's remember our condition because then the rescue is going to seem that much better.
15:05
Reflect on what Jesus did and will do. If you take a look at this song, it reads almost in one way like a resume.
15:16
I now notice that younger people have figured out with resumes, you put a lot of action verbs.
15:22
Collated, called, designed, implemented, overseen, what now, oversaw.
15:35
That's exactly what happens here. There's all these things what God has done. All these action verbs.
15:42
Rules, saves, regards, does, pities, humbles, exalts, fills, helps, speaks.
15:49
And so when Mary praises God, she says, I'm going to praise Him for who He is.
15:55
Titles, attributes. And I'm going to praise Him for what He's done and will do. That's what we should do.
16:02
That's what we're called to do as well. She first off starts in a very personal way.
16:07
Verse 48. She'll move to general, but she starts off with personal. Verse 49, excuse me.
16:14
For He who is mighty has done great things. Here's the personal part. For me. He who is mighty has done great things for me.
16:23
What in the world do you think she's talking about there? What act? What event? The virgin conception.
16:31
The virgin conception. God, the mighty One, has done something for me, and she praises
16:36
Him for that. Reminds me of Psalm 71. Who has done great things?
16:43
Oh, God, who is like You? I mean, even if you've got the worst news in the world for some kind of problem, can't you say, dear
16:53
Christian, should you not say, the Lord has done great things for me? Can't you say that?
17:00
Of course you can. Tear in the eye, though He slay me, yet I'll trust in Him. You can say, with me,
17:07
He's done great things for me. The God of the universe has done great things for me. And you'll notice as we go through the book of Luke, Luke focuses a lot on a personal way that God deals with people.
17:20
Some people think God's abstract. He's different. He's aloof. He's stoic. He's this God who rules and reigns.
17:25
But He doesn't know the people. He doesn't understand the people. We even have insight into Mary where it said she treasured these things in her heart because we have this very personal look at people and God personally taking care of Mary.
17:41
I love what God said to Israel. You shall fear the Lord your God, Deuteronomy 10. You shall serve Him and hold fast to Him.
17:48
He is your praise. He is your God who has done for you these great and terrifying things that your eyes have seen.
17:58
Moses said the same thing. He said, who is God and what He's done. That's how we praise Him. She expands her praise though, not just to what
18:09
God has done for her. And this is good for all of us because we can praise God for what
18:14
He does for other people. Do you notice in verse 50? And His mercy is not just for me,
18:21
Mary. It's good to praise God for what He's done for you. Absolutely. But it expands.
18:26
And I think this is something we rarely talk about, but it's important. Praising God for what He's done in the lives of other people.
18:32
And His mercy is for those who fear Him, verse 50, from generation to generation.
18:39
Do you notice we move from first person, singular, to third person, plural. And I know that warms your heart.
18:47
It's one of those moments of just praise. I know you want to raise your hand for that. But what's happening here with grammar, she praises
18:54
God for who He is because He's done something for her personally. And now she expands it.
19:01
First person singular, third person plural. From the individual to the general.
19:10
Essentially, she quotes Psalm 103, verse 17. But the steadfast love of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear
19:18
Him. His mercy, verse 50.
19:28
When you think of mercy, I want you to think about many things including this. Mary was a
19:33
Jew. She steeped in Old Testament writings. She knows Hannah's song. And when you hear mercy in the
19:39
Old Testament, you should be thinking about steadfast love. Loyal love. Covenant love.
19:46
That's what she's talking about here. So this whole song is about that God's faithful and you can trust in God.
19:53
Hebert even further defines mercy as, the self -moved, spontaneous, loving -kindness of God which causes
20:01
Him to deal in compassion and tender affection with the miserable and the distressed.
20:08
And she starts singing about that God. And whose mercy is it?
20:14
It's the Lord's. And who gets the mercy? What's the text say? Verse 50. For those who fear
20:19
Him. Do you fear God? Did you know the beginning of wisdom is the fear of the
20:27
Lord? How should you fear God? How do you fear God? Well, if you're an unbeliever, here's how you fear
20:34
God. If you're here today and you're not a believer, one day you'll die and have to stand before God and you'll have to pay for your sins.
20:40
And it's a fearful thing to fall in the hands of living God. Right? It's appointed for man once to die and then judgment.
20:47
Wouldn't that be frightening? This God that you sinned against? Yes. It's not too late, by the way, to trust in the
20:52
Lord Jesus even today. But if you're a Christian, you don't have to fear condemnation, right? There's no condemnation in Christ Jesus.
20:58
Then how do you fear? Well, it depends on your relationship with God.
21:05
If your relationship to God is you're an unbeliever and He's a King, which He is, and He's a Sovereign, and He's a
21:11
Creator, and He's a Judge, well, then you better fear. But what if this God, this great God, this transcendent
21:16
God, this holy God, is your father and you're His son or daughter based on the Lord Jesus' work?
21:22
Then do you fear? Do you cringe? You know the proverbial dog you walk past and it's been kicked so many times it just moves to the side because it's just gonna get kicked again?
21:33
Of course, we understand there's a difference between servile fear for the unbeliever, duck, and there's a kind of fear that says for a son or a daughter, my dad's great.
21:46
My father on earth protects me. He provides for me. He's always been there. When I'm in trouble,
21:52
I call my father. And I wanna honor him. I wanna honor him even in my life. Fearing God in Philippians chapter two means that I wanna live a life to honor such a great
22:02
God. And so for us as Christians, we don't have to fear God. We don't have to fear God. Not one of your sins will come up on judgment day.
22:08
Did you know that? Not one. I already know the verdict for you on judgment day. No condemnation.
22:15
So in light of such a great God who would do that at the expense of his son, his holy blameless son, we say we want to fear
22:23
God, not cringing, slavish, ducking fear, but a reverential fear.
22:29
A fear that says I have the greatest father ever and I want to honor him and I want to fear him rightly.
22:37
It says in first Peter one, and even if you call on him as father who judges impartially, conduct yourselves with fear throughout the time of your exile.
22:48
Friends, it can't be the fear of saying I don't even know if I'm a Christian or not. Let's just think about it in human terms.
22:53
What good father would go around and say, you know what, son or daughter, I know you're 13 and you wanna know if actually you're part of my family or not and if you have my last name or not.
23:05
If you keep on obeying enough, I think I'll give you my last name. Matter of fact, that'd be a good way to manipulate people.
23:13
I'm sorry, Gracie, I didn't do that to you. You would have been maybe... It's great to have
23:19
Gracie in the congregation, but now I owe her $2, I think. No, you're my son.
23:27
You're my daughter till the very end. No matter what, there's nothing you can do to separate you from me and my love.
23:33
And if that's my love, sinful, not perfect, what about the heavenly father's love?
23:41
True or false? Perfect love casts out fear. How can that be?
23:47
You're supposed to fear God. I can give you psalm after psalm. You better fear God, you better fear God, you better fear
23:52
God. How can perfect love cast out fear? Answer, because it casts out the fear that says, right, we all said in the
24:02
Abedroth family growing up, my sister and my brother, I've said it many times before, I call the seat behind dad when we're gonna drive.
24:11
I call that, remember? I called it. You're in the house two hours before the trip, I call that. And I was the oldest kid, so I usually got it.
24:19
I got that seat and I got my dad's wrath too, because you are in Christ, dear
24:30
Christian. He couldn't love you anymore. He doesn't even love you less when you sin, because his love is unchanging.
24:39
He started loving you in eternity past and he won't stop. He loves you so much when you sin, you'll be disciplined.
24:44
That's true. Chastened, that's true. But that is even a loving act from the Father. You can't out -sin the
24:51
Savior. And that should not make you want to go wild and licentious and lawless and antinomian.
24:57
It should make you with fear saying, the right kind of fear, I want to live my life in such a way that my
25:04
Father is honored by my conduct. He would be proud of me, that's my son.
25:10
And so when we go back to this passage in verse 50, and his mercy, his steadfast love, is for those who fear him from generation to generation.
25:20
It's talking about that kind of son and daughter fear that cast out the wrong kind of fear.
25:28
Now if you look at verses 51 through 55, I'd like you to notice verbs as I read them.
25:34
I'd also like you to know verb tenses. In these last days, Luther said, God has revealed himself in Greek and Hebrew letters.
25:42
We have to know about grammar because it's important. Every word is important. So I want you to notice verbs and tenses, please.
25:49
Verse 51 through 55. He has shown strength with his arm. He has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts.
25:56
He has brought down the mighty from their thrones and exalted those of humble estate. He has filled the hungry with good things and the rich he has sent away empty.
26:07
He has helped his servant Israel in remembrance of his mercy as he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his offspring forever.
26:17
Now, would you see a lot of verbs? Yes, you did. Shown, scattered, brought, exalted, et cetera.
26:25
What tenses were those verbs? Those verbs were what? Past tense.
26:31
So what do we do? By the way, big picture, can you praise God in light of our former condition for who
26:38
God is and what he's done in the past? Would that be fine? Can you praise God for how faithful he's been in your past?
26:44
Absolutely. That's one option. Another option is this.
26:51
That Mary is praising God for what the Son will do and she uses past tense because it's as good as done.
27:01
It's a prophetic way of using the past tense saying this is going to be an accomplished fact.
27:07
It's going to happen. And you say, I don't know, that kind of maybe seems a stretch. Let me read to you Romans 8, verse 30.
27:15
And those whom he predestined, he also called. Those whom he called, he also justified. And those whom he justified, he also glorified.
27:24
Are you glorified? Have you been called, predestined, justified? Are you glorified?
27:29
Is your body glorified? I sure hope not. If this is a glorified body.
27:37
I mean, not only is my son growing taller than I am, I'm shrinking, so it gets worse.
27:42
It's magnified. Like my back, glorified. Mind, motions, will.
27:50
What Paul is saying in Romans chapter eight is the work of God is so completely done. When he starts a work, it's as good as finished.
27:57
I'll give you a past tense verb to confirm that. Glorified. We're not glorified, but it's as good as done.
28:04
God regularly uses past tense verbs to say, I will keep my word to the extent
28:10
I'll use past tense. Make sense? That's exactly what he's doing here. Of course, she's doing here.
28:16
She realizes what God has done. Exodus, God has taken Israel out of Egypt.
28:24
God has slain Goliath the Philistine. God has humbled
28:29
Belshazzar. And he's humbled Nebuchadnezzar. And you just go right on down the list of great things
28:35
God has done. He has gotten water out of a rock. He has given manna from the sky. He's given quail from the sky.
28:42
He has sustained two million people in the wilderness wanderings. You could just go through the list of what
28:48
God has done. He creates out of nothing, Genesis chapter one. He keeps his people in Exodus.
28:55
And the list goes. And of course, if you want to praise God for the past things. But here, and this is the most amazing thing to me about this little song of hers.
29:08
She's praising God for what Jesus is going to do even though Jesus is in the womb. Do you have thoughts and hopes?
29:17
If you're a young parent, maybe a pregnant mom, and you think, you know what, I wonder what this little one will grow up to be.
29:24
I wonder what he or she will accomplish. We kind of have dreams for our children, not financial dreams, but we want them to do well spiritually and marry a godly spouse.
29:34
And I have those hopes and dreams for my children. You ever think that way? For Mary, she knows via the
29:40
Spirit of God, this is what my son is going to do. He's still in the womb, and she's using past tense verbs to say, this child that I'm going to bear is going to do these things.
29:51
So in light of that, let's see what some of these things are that Jesus is going to do.
29:58
That Jesus is the one Mary is talking about while he's still growing inside her body.
30:07
She knows that this is going to happen, she's convinced of it, and she uses past tense verbs. Singing with joy the deeds of God, past, present, and future.
30:16
Now before we look at these, when's the last time you praised
30:22
God? You got to praise God for what He's going to do in the future. We don't really do that.
30:31
But shouldn't we do that? Jesus, you're going to come one day in this Revelation 19, a white horse, sword coming out of the mouth language, in this great
30:42
Revelation language. Jesus is going to come back, and He's not coming back next time on a donkey. He's not coming back to save sinners.
30:49
He's coming back for judgment. God, I praise you one day, you're going to make every wrong right.
30:54
I'm looking forward to the day when Jesus comes back When they'll be a good way to praise
31:00
God and so we think yes, that's exactly true She knows of course I'm praising
31:05
God for what he did in the past. She understands Egypt Exodus She's praising
31:11
God for present things. I now Have a baby inside of me and I never been with a man and now this baby is going to rule the world
31:22
Verse 51 he's shown strength of his arm. He's scattered the proud and the thoughts of their hearts Did that happen in the
31:29
Old Testament? Absolutely, will that happen with the Lord Jesus to show strength with his arm?
31:34
Now, of course in the Old Testament when you see that language God doesn't have an arm. He doesn't have an eye It doesn't have anything like that.
31:40
It's anthropomorphic language. It's language that we use for accommodation to say God's strong He's got strength and he scattered the proud and the thoughts of their hearts
31:51
Did in fact Jesus do that to proud people even on earth with the Pharisees and the scribes and the hypocrites and the lawyers?
31:58
Yes, will he not do it in the future for all those that are so proud? They won't bow the knee to the Lord Jesus and confess that he's
32:06
God of course I'm the Alpha and the Omega Revelation 1 8 says the
32:11
Lord God who is and who was and is to come the Almighty Same root word.
32:17
They're showing strength in verse 51 Will Jesus take care of all the proud who are self -sufficient in the future?
32:25
Yes Verse 4. I mean the verse goes on to say in verse 51. He scattered the proud and the thoughts of their hearts
32:33
Side note the thoughts of their hearts. I Thought my heart emoted. I Thought my heart felt
32:40
I thought my heart didn't talk well For us it's a lot of we have head knowledge and we don't only have heart knowledge
32:48
And instead of going from my head to my heart before it goes out of my mouth It goes from my head and out my mouth, right?
32:53
That's how we talk Okay, I understand what you're saying. I Don't correct people on the spot here very often unless you're my discipleship lab and you say lucky
33:05
I was watching something online and the person said, you know we've got some people at our church that are so like myopic and aggro and Self -righteous that I can't even say good luck around and without getting corrected
33:21
Thoughts of the heart well the heart for the Jew and the part for the Gentile The heart was mission control center
33:31
The heart was thinking the heart was who you are. And so when we say thoughts of the heart, it's very simple
33:37
It's not just well my heart somehow feels and my mind thinks
33:44
No, she is praising God For what the
33:51
Sun's going to do Scattered the proud in the thoughts of their Verse 52 he's brought down the mighty from their thrones and exalted those of humble estate
34:04
He's done that in the past and guess what he's going to do it in the future Not necessarily at the first coming
34:13
But there's two comings of Christ and he's come the first time the second time he's going to come And this is exactly what he's going to do and she praises
34:20
God Jesus said in Luke 14 everyone who exalts himself will be humbled and he who humbles himself will be exalted the king of King the
34:30
Lord of Lords Will bring down every mighty one from their thrones you think okay?
34:36
It doesn't take long before you think a Syria Babylon Rome China Russia United States he brought down the mighty from their thrones and exalted those of humble estate
34:53
Doesn't that sound like Jesus? Those that are proud and mighty he he humbles and those that are humble he comes alongside and lifts up You can probably experience that in your own life probably have
35:09
Mary anticipating what Jesus will do in the future and he praises she praises God for that Two men and went up into the temple to pray one a
35:17
Pharisee the other tax collector the Pharisee standing by himself prayed thus God I thank you.
35:22
I'm not like other men extortioners unjust adulterers or even like this tax collector I fast twice a week.
35:28
I give tithes of all that I get But the tax collector standing far off and not even lift his eyes to heaven, but beat his breath saying
35:36
God be merciful to me the sinner Jesus said I tell you this man went down to his house justified rather than the other for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled but the one who humbles himself will be exalted
35:50
Exalted verse 53 more action words more verbs that are past tense
35:55
Knowing that this is going to happen in the future has it happened in the past will it happen right then yes will it happen in immediate future yes
36:03
Ultimate future. Yes, what do I mean by that verse 53? He's filled the hungry with good things and the rich he sent away empty
36:10
Even Jesus on earth feeding the 4 ,000 men feeding the 5 ,000 men feeding them his own body as it were
36:18
Figuratively speaking he's the manna from heaven and then the ultimate Feeding the hungry when he returns.
36:26
I mean, this is just the way Jesus does it It's the great reversal proud humble. He makes the proud humble.
36:32
He takes the humble and exalts them one of the
36:38
Pharisees asked to eat with him and He went into the Pharisees house and reclined a table Jesus did behold the woman of the city who was a sinner
36:44
When she learned that he was reclining at table in the Pharisees house brought an alabaster flask ointment
36:52
Standing behind Jesus His feet weeping she began to wet his feet
36:57
With her tears and wiped them with the hair of her head and kissed his feet and anointed them with the ointment
37:04
What do you think the proud said? Now when the Pharisee who invited him saw this he said himself this man if he was a prophet
37:10
He would have known who and what sort of woman this is who's touching him for she's a sinner Jesus answered said to him
37:17
Simon. I have something to say to you, and he said say it teacher Certain money lender had two debtors one owed 500 denarii the other 50
37:25
When they could not pay he canceled both of the debts now which one of them will love him more
37:32
Simon answered he didn't really want to say the one I suppose for whom he canceled the larger debt
37:38
You have judged rightly Turning to the woman he said to Simon so Jesus turns to the woman, but it's talking to Simon.
37:45
Do you see this woman I? Entered your house you gave me no water for my feet But she has wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair you gave me no kiss
37:54
But from the time I came in she's not ceased to kiss my feet You do not anoint my head with oil, but she's anointed my feet with ointment
38:01
Therefore I tell you her sins which are many are forgiven for she loved much
38:08
But he who is forgiven little loves little and he said to her your sins are forgiven
38:14
Then those who are at his table with him began to say among themselves Who is this who even forgives sins and Jesus said to the woman your faith has saved you
38:22
Go in peace and Mary praises
38:27
God for things just like that that Jesus will do verse 54. He's helped us serve in Israel.
38:34
I Think he's helped us serve in Israel in the past. That's certainly true He's helped us serve it in Israel right now with John the
38:41
Baptist announcement is the forerunner Fulfilling Malachi Jesus the birth fulfilling Isaiah chapter 7 and in the future the
38:48
Jewish people that he's going to be preaching to as he Is in his public ministry in remembrance of his mercy as he spoke to our fathers to Abraham and to his offspring
38:58
Forever, that's what the Lord Jesus will do and I think that the good news for us this morning is let's make sure
39:07
That we can sing a song of praise Even if life is difficult as we focus on what we deserved who
39:14
God is and what God does and then What God will do?
39:21
Remembrance of his mercy does God forget his mercy What in the world is that in remembrance of his mercy?
39:28
This is just a poem. And of course, he doesn't need to remember anything It's language that we can understand
39:35
God remembered Noah. Did he forget about Noah? Jesus was said that Jesus was it was asked by the thief on the cross
39:49
Remember me in paradise. I know you're forgetting about me now, but remember me later
39:54
Is that what it means? No when God remembers its language that we can understand that he's going to do something about it
40:03
The summary is simple Mary uses past tense verbs to praise God because she's praising
40:08
God for who he is, but what he will do in the future I want to say at verse 56
40:14
Mary remained with her about three months and returned to her home She's not yet married to Joseph.
40:19
She's betrothed and she goes home. We don't even really know why Maybe she stayed until John was born from Elizabeth.
40:27
We don't know And then lastly and we'll make this quick how to sing for joy in spite of remember your lost condition rehearse truths about Jesus and who he is reflect on what
40:38
Jesus did will do and Number four, let's keep the alliteration going ruminate on the
40:45
Old Testament ruminate on the Old Testament saturate yourself with Scripture Here's what we think wrongly
40:54
Zechariah is in the temple. He's the priest. He knows his Bible Mary's 13 14 12 years old.
40:59
She doesn't know her Bible When you read this passage Some commentators say there are at least 15 allusions to the
41:08
Old Testament It just was in Mary if you read Hannah's song things like this
41:14
Listen to Hannah's song in 1st Samuel to my heart exalts in the Lord The Lord makes poor and makes rich he brings low and exalts.
41:23
He raises up the poor from the dust He lifts the needy from the ash heap to make them sit with princes and inherit a seat of honor
41:30
Does that sound like what I just read? I think the answer is yes She had
41:36
Psalms memorized and written on her heart She sang them at home. She learned about them in the synagogue
41:46
Hannah's song she knew I Think Mary had the Word of Christ richly dwelling within her and if you want to pick up a
41:55
Lot of cues that you can recognize in the New Testament. We need to be people who understand the
42:01
Old Testament And she didn't do it in a way that said now I'm quoting the Old Testament But you could just tell it was in her which makes me think
42:13
Dad's mom's keep teaching your children the Bible Those of you that do way to go
42:19
I hope I can sit at the dinner table with you as you lead your family in family worship If you're not teaching your children the
42:26
Bible today's a good day to start just say to the family I should be teaching the Bible. I haven't been I have all kinds of excuses, but I won't give them
42:33
Please forgive me open up your Bibles. Let's go And by the way
42:39
When you teach your children the Bible the way I did it is I tried to be excited Because if I was excited the kids would be excited.
42:45
Oh, it's Bible time again today kids Open up your Bible Real thrill here.
42:55
It's okay. If you play some games on your phone while I'm talking I understand Second Timothy 3 but as for you
43:04
Timothy continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed Knowing from whom you learned it and how from childhood you've been acquainted with the sacred writings
43:12
Which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Timothy's mom
43:17
Timothy's grandma was teaching him these things Somebody taught Mary as well and when she begins to praise
43:23
God, it's not really chapter and verse It's just her mind is so saturated with Bible with the
43:28
Old Testament. It just comes out Psalm 103 Habakkuk chapter 3. It's just coming out in her own words inspired of course by the
43:36
Spirit of God Training our children to glorify
43:42
God by studying God's Word by singing God's Word To join with Mary my soul magnifies the
43:50
Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior there's gonna be another song.
43:59
We're gonna study and that's gonna be Zachariah's song, but that will be in a couple weeks My goal today was simple.
44:06
I want you to be able to sing the song with Mary about Magnifying the
44:11
Lord so you don't magnify your problems, and I want you dear congregation And I want it for myself as well.
44:18
Not just to praise God for what he's done in the past Not just to praise God for what he's doing now, but to praise
44:26
God for what he will do in the future That's guaranteed with past tense verbs And I also want to learn how to praise
44:33
God not just for what he does in my life But what he does in the lives of other people, right? That's the message of Mary, let's pray.
44:41
Thank you father for your word We want to magnify you we want to rejoice in you the
44:47
God of our salvation Would you forgive us for being people? That all too often complain
44:57
Grumble whisper there's so many sins of the tongue and we fall short
45:06
Like with James they'd all be solved if what coming out of our mouth was praise
45:13
Praising you Would you help us to do that? On behalf of the congregation and with the congregation
45:21
I praise you that you're going to send the Sun back to take care of everything that's wrong
45:27
Those that call evil good and good evil the Lord Jesus is coming back And we don't have to be concerned about doing things and being anxious about that we can rest in you and trust in you
