Your Word, just study the story of the Exodus and how it relates to our own salvation. We ask that You would open our hearts, our minds, and that You would guide our thoughts, teach us what it is that You would have us know and to do.

I don't think I could do that. But last week, we specifically were talking about how the manna from heaven is type and shadow.

The fulfillment is Christ. Christ is the heavenly bread from heaven. And then this has implications then for our understanding of the

Lord's Supper, which is further explicated in other passages. Prior to that, we looked at the crossing of the

Red Sea and how it is held up in Scripture as a type and shadow of baptism itself.

And today, we are going to do something that for some of you may be review. But for others of you, it's not gonna be review.

It's going to deal with a topic that many of us as Christians do not know how to sort out.

And this has to do with the topic of the Sabbath. The Sabbath.

Remember, there's this day of rest that people have to observe in the Old Testament. And so the question often comes up, why is it that Christians do not observe the

Sabbath? Now, if you know somebody who is Seventh -day Adventist or somebody who is in the

Hebrew Roots Movement, they worship exclusively on Saturday.

In fact, they're very legalistic about it. Apparently, we are sinning because we are getting together to worship on Sunday.

You know, you pagans, what are you thinking? And so we're gonna actually unpack this and in order to do it, we're gonna have to take a look at the

Mosaic Covenant. And so it comes up in our text in the context of right before Mosaic Covenant is established and is already beginning to be established.

But then we have to take a look at the Mosaic Covenant itself and what is our relationship to it.

And then we're gonna take a hard look at what the Sabbath actually points to so we can rightly understand the command itself.

Does that make sense? All right, sure. Okay, he's thinking, well, I don't know. We'll see how far we get before we start asking questions because, you know, rows are rows.

But let's take a look at our text and we'll start there. We're in Exodus 16.

And if you remember in Exodus 16, we talked about the meh -nuh, what is it?

Hopefully today, after today's sermon, you have a better concept of what the kingdom of God is all about. When we hear kingdom talk, it's important stuff.

But so the Lord hears their grumbling. The Lord gives them food, gives them bread from heaven, the meh -nuh.

And so we're in Exodus 16, 22. And so we're picking up in the middle of the giving of the manna.

Here's what it says. On the sixth day, they gathered twice as much bread, two omers each.

The reason why is because the Lord commanded them to do that. And when all the leaders of the congregation came and told

Moses, he said to them, this is what Yahweh has commanded. Tomorrow is a day of solemn rest, a holy

Sabbath to the Lord. Bake what you will, bake and boil what you will boil, and all that is left over, lay aside to be kept until morning.

So they laid it aside until morning as Moses commanded them. And it did not stink, because remember when they gathered it, if they kept it till the next day, it stunk and it got worms.

It makes you think, what kind of food is this? And eat it today for today is a Sabbath to the Lord. Today you will not find it in the field.

Six days you shall gather, but on the seventh day, which is a Sabbath, there will be none.

On the seventh day, some of the people went out to gather, but they found none. And the

Lord said to Moses, how long will you refuse to keep my commandments and my laws?

So already now with the children of Israel, now being given miraculous food from heaven, they're not permitted to work on Saturday.

Sunday is the first day of the week. Saturday is the seventh day. Now it's important to note in the book of Genesis that no one is a

Sabbath keeper except for the Lord Himself in the very beginning. In six days,

He created the heavens and the earth, and on the seventh day, God rested. But you don't see

Noah or Adam or Abraham or Isaac or Jacob or any of the sons of Israel being

Sabbath keepers. They don't. There's no commandment that they are to do likewise. Does that make sense?

So the commandment to keep the Sabbath is specifically then tied to the

Mosaic Covenant, and we'll see it being established in the

Mosaic Covenant, and it gets put into the 10 Commandments. So let me ask you this.

If we were sitting around sinning together, maybe gossiping about somebody, and we said, let me tell you about Jane Doe.

It just doesn't register. But think of it this way. It's in the 10 Commandments, right? And this is where we have to be careful, and the reason

Yeah, but it's in the Bible. Yeah, but it's in the Bible. Yeah, the

Sabbath is in the Bible. But do you keep the

Sabbath? Now, I'm gonna pull something up. I created a document a while ago, and let me find it real quick.

And the name of the document is, Are You a Sabbath Breaker or a Sabbath Keeper?

And we're going to review what the scriptures teach regarding what it means to be a

Sabbath keeper. Now, many people, when they think Sabbath, well, that's the day you're supposed to worship.

Let's pay attention to the details, though. And let me pull this up. Give me a second here. I gotta find it.

So here's what we're gonna ask the question. Are you a Sabbath keeper or are you a Sabbath breaker? So the

Torah, notice I'm using the Hebrew language here. The Torah, the law. The Torah and the

Torah only defines what it means to keep or to break the Sabbath. Here's what it teaches. The Sabbath must be observed from sunset on Friday to sunset on Saturday.

And the reason for this is simple. Go back to Genesis 1. God creates the heaven and the earth.

Hebrew time is according to sunrise, sunset. There was evening and there was morning the first day.

There was evening and there was morning the second day. So the way that time gets going, it begins in darkness and then comes into light.

It begins with sleep and then comes to being awake. It starts with death and ends in resurrection.

There's a pattern to all of this. Now, this kind of begs the question. Is it possible to keep the

Sabbath according to what God's law says if you live in Anchorage, Alaska?

Can you imagine making that phone call? Okay, you're a Torah observant Jew. And the sun goes down on Friday night.

And it's not gonna be back for how many days? It's like, sorry dude, I can't come to work.

This is a really long Sabbath. I'll come in as soon as the sun comes back up.

It's kind of a problem. Which kind of begs the question, did God ever intend this to be a universal commandment kept by all people in all places on the planet?

Okay, think about that. And by the way, the Pharisees, man, they always were having these kind of Talmudic Mishnah type conversations and questions about the

Sabbath. And so when you read the Talmuds, they actually have this fascinating question. Okay, so imagine you're in your home.

It's Friday evening and a friend comes over and they're standing outside your window and they brought you some apples.

It's like, hey, would you like an apple? Oh, I'd love an apple. You stick your arm out, the sun's still up, you grab the apple and immediately the sun goes down.

Now what do you do? Ah -ha -ha -ha -ha. Because if you bring your arm in, you're delivering groceries, that's working, you're breaking the

Sabbath. If you drop the apple, you're planting a tree, again, engaging in horticulture, and that's breaking the

Sabbath. So what do you do? Maybe gnaw off your arm, I don't know. But these are the types of questions that they kind of would, because they're all looking at it legalistically in that sense.

So it's from evening until, it's from the evening sunset on Friday to the sun setting on Saturday.

No work can be done on the Sabbath. It's wholly a day of rest. Exodus 31, 15 says six days you shall work.

But the seventh day is a Sabbath of solemn rest, holy to the Lord. And if you turn your furnace on during the winter on the

Sabbath, you're a Sabbath breaker. No joke, I am not making this up. In Orthodox Judaism, there are appliances and furnaces designed to be

Sabbath observant. I am not joking. The Samsung oven that my wife owns has a

Sabbath setting. It really does. So what it'll do, before sun sets on Friday, it'll crank up the oven, keep it at a low grade, because if it's cranked up, then you're not turning it on.

Because this also means if you can't light a fire or turn on a furnace, you can't actually turn on a light or even turn it off, that's considered work.

So what do you do if it's Friday evening and you forgot to turn off the light in your bedroom?

You're gonna, for the next 24 hours, that light's gonna be on, you're not gonna be able to sleep. No, you can't even use the clapper.

Okay, that has not been approved by the rabbis. Here's what you do, no joke, forever.

This is what Jews have done. They've called up their Gentile neighbor and said, oh man,

I left the light on in my bedroom, could you come and turn it off for me? Oh, well, you can do that, okay, you can do that.

You can communicate with people. So I actually saw a Kickstarter program for a light switch that uses some kind of a light beam and some kind of an algorithm based upon random numbers to actually turn on or turn off a light switch because the random part of it means you're not doing the work.

I'm not joking. The light's on, let's go in there real quick. It's like, when you start thinking in these terms, it really becomes quite the burden, doesn't it?

And Jesus' words, the Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath, kind of come ringing back.

But here, so you can't, here's what it says in Exodus 35 .3, you shall kindle no fire in your dwelling place on the

In Numbers 15, 32, verses 30 through verse 35, we actually get the account of a fellow who experienced the death penalty for breaking the

Sabbath. While the people of Israel were in the wilderness, they found a man gathering sticks on the Sabbath.

Those who found him gathering sticks brought him to Moses and Aaron and all the congregation, and they put him in custody because it had not been made clear what should be done to him.

And Yahweh said to Moses, the man shall be put to death. All the congregation shall stone him with stones outside the camp, and they did.

He's like, what? Oh, and here's the other part. You don't keep the Sabbath unless your priest sacrifices two lambs every

Sabbath. In other words, priests are well -commanded to actually defile the

Sabbath in order for people to keep the Sabbath, and there's a sacrifice, two sacrifices.

Here's what it says in Numbers 28, nine through 10. On the Sabbath day, two male lambs, a year old, without blemish, two tenths of an ephah, a fine flower, for a grain offering mixed with oil and its drink offering.

This is the burnt offering of every Sabbath besides the regular burnt offerings and its drink offerings. So let me ask you, based upon these criteria for keeping the

So none of you are keepers of the Sabbath. Okay, let me ask you another question. Where are the commandments regarding worship?

Sabbath. And here's the thing, the person who says, and this is where I want to kind of get this in your mind, the person who says that the day we must worship is on Saturday doesn't rightly understand the commandments regarding the

No, no, they're lying to your face because they don't keep it. There's no sacrifice for their sins, they're not enforcing it with the death penalty.

The Sabbath is kept by doing absolutely nothing. Nothing.

This is the only commandment that requires you to do nothing to keep it.

Well, that's the thing. God has said, this is a day, you're to set this day apart.

Let's kind of get into that. Let me pull this up in Galatians. Give me a second here. Galatians chapter three, starting verse seven.

Know then it is those of faith who are the sons of Abraham. The scripture foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, in you shall all the nations be blessed.

So then those who are of faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith. All who rely on works of the law are under a curse.

Now, I'm gonna make something very clear here. We need to make a distinction. The word rely is going to be the thing that is most important here.

If you're relying on works of the law in order to be declared righteous before God, you are under a curse.

If you honor and love the commandments and strive to keep and to guard them because you are saved, you are not under a curse.

You're living in freedom. Does that make sense? So Paul here is writing to the Galatian church who's bought into this idea that you're not saved unless you're circumcised.

Does that sound familiar? All who rely on works of the law are under a curse. It is written, curse is everyone who does not abide by all the things written in the book of the, and I'm gonna translate this as Torah, in the book of the

Now, it is evident that no one is justified before God by the Torah, for the righteous shall live by faith.

But the law, the Torah, is not of faith, rather the one who does them shall live by them. Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written, curse is everyone who is hanged on a tree, so that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come on the

Gentiles, so that we might receive the promised spirit through faith. To give a human example, brothers, even a man -made covenant, think contract here.

So why then the Torah? It was added because of transgressions until the offspring should come to whom the promise had been made, and it was put in place through angels by an intermediary, and we know that an intermediary implies more than one, but God is one.

So is the Torah then contrary to the promises of God? Answer, no, certainly not.

For if a law had been given that could give life, then righteousness would indeed be by the law.

But the scripture imprisoned everything under sin so that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe.

Now, before faith came, we were held captive under the law, imprisoned until the coming faith would be revealed, so then the law was, past tense, our guardian until Christ came in order that we might be justified, declared righteous, by faith.

But here's our context. Paul says to the church in Corinth, are we beginning to commend ourselves again, or do we need as some do letters of recommendation to you or from you?

You yourselves are our letter of recommendation written on our hearts to be known and read by all. And you show that you are a letter from Christ delivered by us, written not with ink, but with the spirit of the living

God, not on tablets of stone, but on tablets of human hearts. Such is the confidence that we have through Christ towards God.

Not that we are sufficient in ourselves to claim anything as coming from us, but our sufficiency is from God who has made us sufficient to be ministers of a new covenant, not of the letter, but of the spirit, for the letter kills, but the spirit gives life.

And this is why when we talk about the Old Testament, we look at types and shadows that point us to the fulfillment who is

Christ. Does that make sense? Now I'm gonna give you a passage here that is going to make this a little bit clearer, but I need to look at one more thing first.

I want you to go to Hebrews 10. Hebrews chapter 10. If you remember last week's sermon, as I was working through this passage in relation to what

Christ did for us on the cross and how the Old Testament sacrifices pointed to Jesus, here's what we noted.

I'll start at verse one for our context. For since the Torah, and that's how

I'm gonna translate namas here. Since the Torah has but a shadow of the good things to come instead of the true form of these realities, it can never by the same sacrifices that are continually offered every year make perfect those who draw near.

Otherwise, would they not have ceased to be offered since the worshipers have once been cleansed would no longer have any consciousness of sin.

But in these sacrifices, there is a reminder of sins every year, for it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.

So notice verse 9. He has done away with the first in order to establish the second. So here we've got several data points all saying the same thing.

Mosaic covenant, done away with. Then fulfilled. It is no longer in effect.

It was to point us to Jesus. The opening verse in chapter 10 makes it clear it was all type and shadow.

That those sacrifices in the temple never took away sins. They always pointed to the reality the once for all sacrifice of Christ.

But they thought it was taking away sins. They always saw it as a rolling back, never as a true atonement in the real sense.

They always see it as an annual rolling back. It's fascinating. That's the way they would talk about it.

Okay, so now in the Mosaic covenant, there are three types of law that we see in it.

There is moral law. There is civil law. And there is ceremonial law.

The moral law specifically look at nine of the 10 commandments. You shall not commit adultery.

You shall not lie. You shall not covet. You shall not steal. You shall not murder. Moral law.

Civil law. If you do this, then you are to punish this person in this way.

There's a whole civil code in the Mosaic covenant. And then there's a whole lot of law regarding offerings.

If you commit an unintentional sin in this particular way, you offer this sacrifice with this offering at this time, in this place, in this way.

Does that make sense? So moral, civil, ceremonial.

We have no problem identifying this. Well, there's no sacrifices going on in a temple in Jerusalem today.

There hasn't been for almost 2 ,000 years. God brought that to an end.

That all always pointed to Christ. So we can say, well, for sure, the ceremonial portion of the

Torah has come to an end. It's not in effect. This is what this is saying.

How about the civil laws? Are we required to stone

Sabbath breakers and the sexually immoral? No.

Those were commandments given specifically to Israel. But what about the moral?

And I'm gonna hold out the third commandment here, the Sabbath commandment for a second.

Let's take nine of the 10 and take the Sabbath out for just a second. Every one of the nine, with the exception of the

Sabbath, are reiterated within the new covenant itself as we are duty -bound to keep and guard and obey them.

You see them at the tail end of practically every one of the epistles. Do not murder.

Do not be sexually immoral. Do not gossip. Look at Galatians chapter six in the list regarding the fruit of the sinful nature.

All of that is tied explicitly to the moral law. So the good way of thinking about it is take nine of the 10 commandments, hold the

New Testament makes it explicitly clear. So they all get rolled into the new covenant.

And the reason for this is simple. God's moral law is exactly how he intended for us to live our lives.

And a good way to think of it is the moral law is eternal. This always reflects

God's character, his holiness, his righteousness, and all of that.

It reflects the character of God. Does that make sense? So what do we do with the

Sabbath? What do we do with it? This commandment to rest, to do nothing.
