The Father's Declaration Of The Son - [Hebrews 1:4-14]

Angels in Salvation History and Christ’s Superiority

They are referenced a hundred and eight times in the Old Testament 165 times in the New Testament. According to 1st Peter they long to look into the things of salvation. According to our Lord Jesus Christ himself in Luke 15, there is more joy before them over one sinner who repents.

They announced the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ to Joseph to Mary to the shepherds they were there to minister to the Lord Jesus after his temptation and of course in a very glorious way they were at the empty tomb announcing Christ's resurrection.

And Jesus is much superior to angels as The name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs. Turn with me if you will to the book of Hebrews the epistle to the Hebrews chapter 1 like John chapter 1 the first 18 verses like Philippians chapter 2 verses 5 to 11 like Colossians 1 verses 13 through 20 or even the first chapter of the book of Revelation the revelation of Jesus Christ this chapter Hebrews chapter 1 is the Mount Everest of Christological passages.

If after we go through this text this morning, you are not excited about Jesus Christ you need to take your pulse. I Actually have assigned elders to do that as you leave today. JB Phillips wrote a book a few years ago.

Your God is too small. Today a book ought to be written. Your Jesus is too small. My prayer and hearts desire this morning is simple that you will leave this morning with a more exalted view of the Lord Jesus Christ Than when you arrived.

Why. Because if you are not a believer in the Lord Jesus Christ it is this Jesus of Hebrews 1 that you are to turn to by faith and Repentance to save you from your sin. Why. Because if you are a believer it is this Jesus of Hebrews 1 that you are to continue to grow in the grace and knowledge of and is this Jesus of Hebrews 1 that you are to Proclaim to a lost and dying world.

Who are the recipients of this letter the original audience as the letter? Says in its title the letter to the Hebrews. There is no reference in the book to Gentiles at all. But there is consistently a reference to the Levitical priesthood and the Levitical sacrifices.

The author is writing to a Jewish audience. Therefore he in our text this morning Hebrews chapter 1 verses 4 to 14. He quotes no less than seven times seven Old Testament passages five of them primarily from the Psalms.

Simply because in the early church liturgy they use the Psalter quite a bit. What is his aim in writing this book? Why in other words is Hebrews a part of the canon if you will? It's to show the superiority of the person of Jesus Christ and to show the sufficiency of the work of Jesus Christ.

Christ Superior to Moses, Priests, and Prophets

That is why for example, the author says this if you turn to chapter 3 of our book chapter 3 verses 5 and 6. The author highlights Christ is superior to Moses. Moses as we know was one of the greatest if not the greatest in the mind of a Jew Jewish leader and he says in chapter 3 beginning in verse 5 now Moses was faithful in all God's house as a servant to testify to the things that were to be spoken later, but Christ is faithful over God's house as a son.

Christ is superior to Moses. He's saying to the Hebrews Turn with me to chapter 7. He wants to show that the great high priest Jesus Christ. His sacrifice is sufficient in contrast to the ongoing sacrifices of the priests.

Chapter 7 verse 27. He writes he has no need like those high priests to offer sacrifices daily. First for his own sins and then for those of the people since he did this once for all. When he offered up himself.

His aim the author's aim in writing to the Hebrews is on the one hand to present the superiority of the person of Christ Even over Moses and to present the sufficiency of the work of Jesus Christ sufficient once for all.

Back to our main text in chapter 1. It's an interesting introduction in the letter unlike the Apostle Paul and his epistles who usually begins by an introduction of whose writing for example as we've been reading through the book of Philippians Paul writes Paul and Timothy and he writes the audience who he's addressing to the church in Philippi along with the overseers and deacons and he gives a Graceful introduction grace and peace to you, but there's none of that kind of introduction here.

The author immediately gets into his subject matter Jesus. He wants to show the superiority of Jesus Christ and he begins in Verse 1 of chapter 1 first in this opening chapter to show that Jesus Christ is superior to the prophets.

Notice what he says verse 1 long ago at many times and in many ways God spoke To our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his son. God has spoken. The writer of Hebrew says he spoke first through the prophets.

That was by God's divine design as the prophets were God's Spokespeople they would say thus saith the Lord and speak on God's behalf. But verse 2 in contrast to that superior to that revelation is the revelation of God by his son.

We don't need to have to listen to a whisper God has spoken in his son and not only is Christ superior to prophets. But in our text this morning after he presents that the author highlights that Christ Jesus is also superior to angels.

Notice in our text verse 5 for to which of the angels did God ever say. And Then verse 13 to which of the angels has he ever said? They are bracketing this section this phrase to demonstrate the author to the Hebrews that he wants to show Jesus Christ is superior to the angels.

Now you might say, okay Moses held a high view in the Jews mind. So did the Levitical priesthood. This is part of their covenant with God. So did the prophets so it's an affront to a Jew for the author to say look Jesus Christ is superior to the Levitical priesthood to Moses and to prophets.

But to angels. Yes to angels. Jews had an elevated and exalted view of angels much more than their view of Jesus Christ for a number of reasons first of all to a Jew Jesus was not God and We know that from studying and reading the Gospels over and over going when Jesus would claim deity in John 5 18, for example, they were out to to kill him because they said to Jesus you called God your father making yourself equal with God and.

So the author goes about in this text to show the deity of Christ and thus his superiority over angels. But a second reason the Jew had a high and elevated view of angels more than Christ himself according to the Talmud and certain rabbinical teaching Jews viewed angels as the highest beings next to God.

But even above all that. What in the mind of a Jew brought such elevation and exaltation of angels? Was it in the mind of a Jew their law was brought to them from God by angels. In other words The angels were the mediators for their covenant.

That's why in His speech before his martyrdom Stephen in Acts 7 said in verse 53 you who received the law as delivered by angels. The Apostle Paul even said in Galatians 3 verse 19 and talking about the law it was put in place through angels.

So the Jews had an elevated view of angels far above even Jesus Christ for those reasons. In our text the author's main thrust is given in verse 4 and he says having become as much Superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs.

That's his major thesis statement right there and It's connected to verse 3 the term haven't become as a participle that simply modifies the main verb of verse 3 which is he sat down and In other words Haven't become as much superior to the angels.

Jesus Christ sat down at the right hand of the Majesty. The reason he sat down there is because he is superior to the angels. This is essential to his being. It's not like the incarnation where he became man at the incarnation.

He became superior because that is who he is in terms of his being. We see though in chapter 2 there in Hebrews in verse 9 It says. But we see him for who for a little while was made lower than the angels.

Namely Jesus crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death. So in his incarnation, he was made a little lower than the angels, but from eternity past in Always he will be superior to the angels and that is why he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty.

And notice this is a name that he inherited. He is superior to the angels. Our author says because he has inherited a name that is more excellent than theirs. Of course, it's by inheritance. That's why even in verse 2 the author says whom he God the Father appointed the heir of all things.

What name is this? Some believe it's the name that was given to him at his birth Matthew 1 you shall give him the name Jesus because he will save his people from their sins. Others believe it's the name from Philippians 2 when every knee will bow and every tongue confess that Jesus is Lord.

Still others say that it's the unknown and inexpressible heavenly name mentioned in Revelations chapter 19 verse 20 and all those are true. But what is our authors intent in presenting? Jesus this way to this Jewish audience.

What did he have in mind? Well, our context tells us that what this name is that he's referring to verse 2 in these last days. He has spoken to us by His son verse 5 for to which of the angels that God ever say you are my son verse 8 but of the son.

Because he is trying to highlight that unlike the angels Jesus Christ in the Trinity in the Godhead in the triune God has a unique Relationship to the father as the son that nobody else holds. This is his general thesis statement as we said in verse 4 and then from verse 5 to 15.

He goes on Categorically listing nine reasons why Jesus is superior to the angels and I like you want to walk you through those nine. But I want you to notice that the reasons he gives are based upon what God says.

Not what the Jewish person thinks. What does God say notice this over and over again in our text? Verse 5 for to which of the angels did God ever say? Verse 6 and again when he brings the firstborn into the world, he says verse 8 but of the son he says Verse 13 and to which of the angels has he ever said?

So to the author of Hebrews the issue is not what? Did his audience think about Jesus the issue? What was God said about who Jesus was to him that settled the issue? So it is with us in that sense. It doesn't really matter what you think about Jesus.

It doesn't really matter what I think about Jesus. What matters is what God the Father says about Jesus. This is the Father's declaration of the Son the first member of the Trinity declaring unequivocally who the Son is.

We as Americans love the Declaration of Independence if you are a follower of Jesus Christ this morning. By the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit, this is your declaration of the Father concerning the Son.

The Father's declaration of the Son supersedes the Jews opinion of the Son. The Father's declaration of the Son Supersedes your opinion of the Son. The Father's declaration of the Son Supersedes my opinion of the Son.

What has God said about the Son? Let's look he's superior to angels. Here's the first reason number one addressed by the Father as my son. Addressed by the Father as my son verse 5 which we read briefly earlier for to which of the angels did God ever say You are my son today.

I have begotten you or again I'll be to him a father and he shall be to me a son. Questionmarks. To which of the angels has God the Father ever said that to none of them. No less than two times. He refers to Jesus Christ here as the son my son a son and here He quotes to us the author from two Old Testament passages.

The first one from Psalm chapter 2 verse 7 and the second one from 2nd Samuel chapter 7 verse 14. It's where God is speaking through Nathan to David concerning Solomon and where he says I will be to him a father and he shall be to me a son and the author knew that his Jewish audience knew that.

And he attributes this to the Son to Jesus Christ to real understand. The impact of what the author is saying here. I want to highlight to you two words in this verse. You're my son today. I've begotten you some say today has a reference to the incarnation.

That yes, Jesus Christ was eternally God, but it wasn't until the incarnation where he became the son. Some also say that it might be referring to his baptism where God the Father spoke from heaven and said this is my son in Whom I am well pleased listen to him.

Some even say it might be a reference the today to his resurrection because it was then when Jesus Christ fully completed his work of redemption. But that is not what our author has in mind here. He is trying to highlight the unique relationship as we said between the Father and the Son that none of the angels had that to none of the angels did God ever say you're my son and this is the eternal sonship of Jesus Christ.

Jesus Christ has eternally been the Son of God the second member of the Trinity. How do we know that first of all from? The fact that when God the Father gave Jesus Christ to the world. He was already a Son he didn't become a son at his incarnation.

John 3 16 for God so loved the world that he gave his only son. He gave him when he was already a son. Galatians 4 verse 4 when the fullness of time had come God sent forth his son. And of course as we know during Christmastime well-known Old Testament passage Isaiah chapter 9 verse 6 for to us a child is born to us a Son is given when God gave the son to come to save his body his church.

He's elect. He was already a son at that point. And secondly, we know about the eternal sonship of Christ. From this context because this verse that our author quotes in verse 5 is taken from Psalm chapter 2 verse 7.

Which literally reads quote? I will tell of the decree the Lord said to me you are my son today. I have begotten you. And what is the decree of God? It is simply his sovereign will from eternity past.

It is his divine plan and purpose from eternity past that nobody can thwart. It will be accomplished in. The passage says that it is the decree of God and God's decree is eternal. John Walvoord in his classic book Jesus Christ our Lord says the following.

Quote, this is in effect a statement. The Christ is eternally the Son of God. As the decree itself is eternal. It is God's decree from eternity past when he said you are my son today. I have begotten you.

But what about the word begotten? Does that mean so-and-so begets so-and-so was Christ somehow? Created a creature himself. This is known in theology as the eternal generation of the Son the doctrine of the eternal generation of the Son.

Lewis Burkard reformed theologian puts it this way. Quote it is that eternal and necessary act of the first person in the Trinity whereby he within the divine being is the ground of a second personal subsistence like his own and Puts the second person in possession of the whole divine essence without any division alienation or change.

Begotten by the Father. It can't mean it can't mean that he was created. It would ultimately defeat the purpose for why the author wrote this epistle to show that Christ was superior to angels. Well, we know that it doesn't mean created because from the context look at verses 2 and 3 again.

The last part of verse 2 he writes through whom also through whom Jesus also He the Father created the world. And he continues in verse 3. He Christ is the radiance of the glory of God. So begotten cannot mean created if Christ is the radiance of the glory of God.

Merrill Unger on that phrase says. Quote. Christ is the absolute expression of the collective attributes of deity. Christ is the absolute expression of the collective attributes of deity and. The author doesn't stop there.

He continues in verse 3 and the exact imprint of his nature. Or as the New American Standard puts it the exact Representation of his nature that phrase is only found here in the entire New Testament. It means like a stamped imprint of a coin.

And of course that is why Jesus was able to say to his own disciples right he who has seen me has seen the Father. But not only from the context do we know that begun doesn't mean created. But we know from the creeds that were established through church history during heretical times of teaching God and his sovereignty.

Allowed these creeds to be formulated to crystallize the church's thinking on theology. In 325 AD there was a man by the name of Arius who came from Alexandria Egypt in the Aryan controversy. He denied the deity of Christ because he believed Christ was a creature that he was a creation creation.

And he actually came out with a catchy tune that said quote. Once the Sun did not exist. So the Alexandrians will walk around the streets be chanting this tune once the Sun did not exist. And the Council of Nicaea was drawn together.

And The Nicene Creed helps us formulate what begotten is and it says. Quote. And in one Lord Jesus Christ. The only begotten Son of God begotten of the Father before all worlds. God of God light of light very God of very God begotten not made being of one substance with the Father by whom all things were made.

And In the same century the Athanasian Creed at the nation supposed areas. It says quote. The Son is of the Father alone not made nor created but begotten. And even during the time of the Reformation it was crystallized even more.

What this means in terms of the superiority of Christ and the term begotten in? 1561 the Belgian Confession says. Quote. We believe that Jesus Christ according to his divine nature is the only Son of God.

Eternally begotten not made or created. For then he would be a creature. He is one in essence with the Father. Co-eternal the exact image of the person of the Father and the reflection of God's glory being like the Father in all things end.

Quote. Jesus is Superior to the angels because the father has addressed him as son. He derives his deity from this eternal generation. And in the verse he continues verse 5 or again I'll be to him a father and he shall be to me a son a second time as if to emphasize.

To which of the angels did God ever say that not even to the archangels. Has God ever said that Michael or Gabriel. This is only the address the father gives to the second member of the Trinity Jesus Christ as a son and.

Because of that he is saying to his audience. He is superior to the angels which you have elevated. Number two. He is adored by the angels as the firstborn. Jesus Christ is adored by the angels as the firstborn.

The Firstborn Son and the Worship of Angels

Verse 6. And again when he brings the firstborn into the world, he says let all God's angels worship him firstborn. Does that mean Jesus had a beginning? Again, that would defeat the purpose. The author is writing because if he'd had a beginning then that would support the Jews belief that he wasn't God and therefore wouldn't be superior to angels.

You have to think like a Jew. He's writing to the Hebrews Firstborn had the status of the oldest son, correct? He got a double portion of the inheritance. He had certain privileges that the others did not have.

He was given preferential treatment in certain respect. And the Jew understood the term firstborn. They knew from their history in slavery in Egypt when God told Moses to go to Pharaoh. He told them Moses tell Pharaoh let go of my firstborn son Israel.

And why was Israel his firstborn son? Deuteronomy 7 explains it was not because they were more in number than any other people. For they were the fewest of all peoples, but it was because the Lord Loves you he said to Israel and because the father loves the son.

He is the firstborn superior to the angels. The Jews also knew about King David. Psalm 89 in verse 27 is about King David and it's in a poetic form the Hebrews used where the second line of Poetry explains the first line.

Listen to the first line. Quote, I will make him the firstborn. Second line explanation the highest of the kings of the earth. To be the firstborn is to be the highest in rank in position in prominence.

That's what firstborn means to be the highest in rank position and prominence. It's no wonder according to verse 2 God the Father. I pointed him the heir of all things on Christ being the firstborn. Ray Stedman writes quote the point of it all is this.

He whom the Hebrews thought to be subordinate to angels is the very one whom the angels are commanded to worship. That's why he quotes in verse 6 from the Old Testament. Let all God's angels worship him.

Not just some of the angels but all of God's angels are to worship Jesus Christ the Son the firstborn and there he quotes from Deuteronomy chapter 32 verse 43 the Song of Moses and he quotes it actually in the Greek translation of the Old Testament is subdued.

Because in the early church of the dispersion of the Jews they use the Greek translation of the Old Testament in their synagogues. Let all the angels of God worship him. The Greek word brusque now literally means to fall down to bow down to prostrate yourself.

To worship him. God is telling the angels in an imperative. That's how they're to be towards the firstborn Jesus Christ. And that is why he is superior. The question is sometimes in verse 6 the term again.

When does this happen? When did the angels worship him. Some say because of the Greek word structure. It should read when he brings again the firstborn into the world referring to the second coming of Christ.

That's when the angels would worship some according to the context at a hand. Which most commentators believe because of the context say it says when he brings the firstborn into the world. He says again he's just given a Categorically a list of reasons again and again for why Jesus is superior.

But his point is this the angels of God because Christ is superior to them. They are to worship him. Did they not do this at his incarnation? The shepherds the announcement is made of his birth and a multitude of host appears praising God in the heavenlies.

Even in Revelation a picture of heaven. It says in Revelation chapter 5 verses 11 through 12 Angels numbering myriads of myriads and thousands of thousands saying with a loud voice worthy is the lamb who was slain to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing.

The point is because Jesus is superior to angels. The author is saying to his Hebrew audience Angels are worshiping him. Third reason why he is superior. He is anointed by the Father as King. He is anointed by the Father as King.

The Son as King, God, Lord, and Creator

Verses 7 to 9 of the angels he says he makes his wins. His angels winds and his ministers a flame of fire. But of the Sun he says your throne. Oh God is forever and ever. The scepter of uprightness is the scepter of your kingdom.

You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness. Therefore God your God has anointed you with the oil of gladness beyond your companions. Notice the stark contrast here in verse 7. God the Father says of the angel.

They are simply ministers literally servants. Subjects to whom the King but of the Sun he says your throne. Oh God is forever and ever. God the Father has anointed Jesus as King. Notice the terminology the of royalty that is mentioned here in verse 8 throne Kingdom his scepter, which is mentioned twice.

The scepter being an ornamented staff, which would cat which was carried by Kings during Ceremonial occasions and every represented their sovereign authority. And this is who Jesus is in superiority to the angels.

Why was he anointed though by God the Father? Notice verse 9 you have loved righteousness and hated wickedness. Therefore God your God has anointed you. Because Jesus Christ has loved righteousness and wicked hated wickedness.

Therefore God has anointed him as King and of course He has loved righteousness and hated wickedness from eternity past. He himself is the righteous one as the eternal Son of God and it was ultimately evidenced in his incarnation.

When Jesus Christ loved righteousness in obeying the law of God perfectly. The law of God which you and I would demand it to obey but could never do. Any hated wickedness? Therefore the Father has made him and anointed him King With the oil of gladness.

He says here be on your companions. Some say the companions is a reference to the angels since that is the context of Our passage. Others say that it's referring to some of the Old Testament offices Prophet priests and kings because they too were anointed with oil and he's writing to Hebrews here.

Others believe it might be Talking of believers in the Lord Jesus Christ because later on in the book in Hebrews chapter 3 verse 1. It says therefore Holy brethren partakers same word as companions of a heavenly calling but the author's point is Unmistaken he is anointed the king unlike the angels who are simply his subjects in his ministers.

Number four fourth reason Christ is superior to angels. He is addressed by the Father as God. He is addressed by the Father as God. We just read that verse 8, but of the son. He says you're a throne. Oh God.

There it is. This is the Father's declaration of the Son. God the Father says Jesus is God that settles the issue. It doesn't matter what anybody else thinks. And he mentions it twice your throne. Oh God is forever and ever and then again in verse 9.

Therefore God referring to the Son your God the Father has anointed you. The Father has addressed the Son as God. Reason number five he is superior to angels. He is addressed by the Father also as Lord.

Not only it does God the Father address him as God, but he addresses him as Lord. Look at verse 10. Where our author is quoting from Psalm 102. And you Lord laid the foundation of the earth in the beginning.

God the Father the Greek term for Lord there is Kyrios master sovereign Ruler. God the Father Names the Son as Lord. Therefore he is superior to the angels because he never said that to any of the angels and he never will reason.

Number six. Ascribed by the Father the divine act of creation. Jesus Christ the Son is ascribed by the Father the divine act of creation and I just read that but I'll read the rest of it. Verse 10 you Lord laid the foundation of the earth in the beginning and the heavens of the work of your hands.

Jesus Christ the Son is the creator. According to God the Father he ascribes to him this divine act of the creation. Number seven. Ascribed by the Father the divine attribute of immutability. Ascribed by the Father the divine attribute of immutability to be immutable is an attribute of God.

It simply means unchangeable. That's one of the attributes of God and in verse 12 He says the following like a road you like a robe you will roll them up like a garment. They will be changed but you are the same and your years will never end.

You are the same the Father says of Jesus. He is immutable. It's an attribute of deity and he's saying to his audience our author here that look you think angels are highly exalted above Jesus. You are wrong.

Jesus is superior to angels because he possesses the divine attribute of being immutable. Number seven. Ascribed by the Father the divine attribute of eternality. Ascribed by the Father the divine attribute of eternality.

Notice the words and phrases he uses verse 10 in the beginning. Verse 11 they will perish but You son will remain in. The end of verse 12 your years will never will have no end. God is an eternal God.

Obviously this relates to the creation because the creator has to be eternal. No one's created him and thus Jesus as the eternal Son of God as the creator as God the Father. Attributes that to him here is also eternal.

The eighth reason why our author says Jesus is superior to angels. Actually, this is the ninth reason correct and I was a math major in college. He is appointed by the Father to his right hand. And this is the climactic one.

He's building up to this. He's appointed by the Father to his right hand. He's quoting here in verses 13 to 14 from Psalm 110 verse 1. It's actually the most quoted Psalm in the New Testament and he says this to which of the angels has he ever said sit at My right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.

Are they not all ministering spirits sent out to serve for the sake of those who are to inherit salvation. Early, he said of the angels. They are ministers to Christ and remember I told you at the outset.

They ministered to Jesus after his temptation in Matthew 4 here. The author is saying yes. They are simply ministers to those who will inherit salvation to believers. But to none of the angels has God ever said sit at my right hand to none of them.

This was the climax of the early section of chapter 1. Where the author says that Christ is superior to the prophets and he builds it to a climax by saying He sat down verse 3 at the right hand of the majesty on high and so he does here in this section.

He is superior to angels by sitting. After his right hand the Greek verb to sit is an imperative. It means that the Sun is seated next to God and is told to continue to do so. When did this happen? Verse 3 made it very clear of chapter 1 our text after making purification for sins.

He sat down at the right hand. Chapter 10 verse 12 of Hebrew says the same. When Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins. He sat down at the right hand of God. The right hand of God represents a position of honor a position of power a position of authority and That's how the New Testament writers understood it.

Paul for example in Ephesians 1 said that he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and Seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places. Far above all rule and authority and power and dominion and above every name that is named not only in this age but also in the one to come and Even the Apostle Peter understood what it meant the right hand of God a position of honor power and authority for the Sun and he Wrote in chapter 1 verse 22 of his epistle who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God with angels authorities and powers.

Haven't been subjected to him to Jesus none other. He alone is sitting at the right hand and I want you to notice that it is the father who puts the Sun at his right hand. Guess what? It's his prerogative.

It's his by eternal decree. When the author here says again as he had in the beginning of this section to which of the angels has he ever said? He is signifying that none of the angels have this position of honor power and authority but this position at the right hand of the majesty on high is reserved only for the one whom the father addresses as my son as God as Lord, it's reserved only for the one whom the angels adore the firstborn son.

It's reserved only for the one whom the father ascribes the divine attributes of immutability and eternality. It's reserved only for the one whom the father ascribes the divine act of creation. And it's reserved only for the one whom the father anoints as king.

To none of the angels only to Jesus Christ. Until when until I make your enemies a footstool. When conquering Kings back in those days would defeat their enemy. They would go over and place their foot as a sign of victory upon their neck.

Thought of trying that with my son. But I have a little advantage. The Old Testament said in Joshua chapter 10. Relating this when they brought those Kings out to Joshua Joshua summoned all the men of Israel and said to the chiefs of the men of war who had gone with him come near.
