Hey guys, Colin here, and welcome back to Fight for Truth, the channel where we bring you Christian commentary about the things that matter.
00:07
In today's video, we're going to be talking about a sermon from T .D. Jakes. For those who don't know, Jakes is the pastor of the
00:13
Potters House Church in Dallas, Texas, and he's also a proponent of the prosperity gospel. Concepts like money, health, and material wealth are thrown about with extreme regularity in his preaching.
00:25
In fact, he uses these concepts and emphasizes them as much as other preachers might talk about holiness, righteousness, or even the gospel itself.
00:33
And it is this blending of materialism with Christianity that presents the central threat of the prosperity gospel.
00:40
Because while the Bible does have a lot to say about wealth and prosperity, the goal of redemptive history has always been to save sinners, not fundamentally to make them rich and healthy.
00:50
So with all that said, it's important that you know which biblical text T .D. Jakes will be talking about in his sermon.
00:56
At the beginning of this so -called sermon, he quotes Psalm 126, verses 1 -2, which says this,
01:03
When the Lord restored the fortunes of Zion, we were like those who dream. Then our mouth was filled with laughter, and our tongue with shouts of joy.
01:11
In response to this text, Jakes first tells his audience what his main point will be in the message.
01:17
Watch this. God knows when. When I read the text, amidst the magnitude of powerful things, prolific things that stood out to me, it was the one word, when, that captivated me the most.
01:35
When the time capsule, when the ambiguity of it, when the uncertainty of it, when the promise of it.
01:49
So instead of doing a genuine study of God's Word in context, instead of expositing the text verse -by -verse, exegeting it genuinely, and telling people what it means in context,
02:00
T .D. Jakes has decided to highlight the word when. In fact, he has designed his entire message around this one word, a message entitled, quote,
02:09
God knows when. There doesn't seem to be any indication in the text itself that the word when here carries the immense weight that T .D.
02:18
Jakes attributes to it. But of course, that does not stop him. You see, if there is any word in any passage that Jakes can use to create his motivational speech, he will latch onto it and forget about the rest of the text.
02:30
He will pull a word or a phrase out of the passage, and usually without any regard for the original meaning or context, and then he will apply that word or phrase to your life in a way that promises that better things are just about to happen.
02:43
How do I know that this will be the case? Well, quite simply, because it's the exact same message that T .D.
02:49
Jakes, and in fact most prosperity gospel teachers, use every single week, like clockwork.
02:54
Here's the next part of the video, and you'll see a perfect demonstration of this preaching in action. Watch this.
03:00
It is possible to serve God and not know when. It is possible to be your parent's child and not know, are we there yet?
03:09
It is possible to be going through a process of healing and know it's coming, but don't know when.
03:19
But then when is also a promise because it lets me know that God has a when.
03:26
That whatever I'm going through, I will not always go through it, that sooner or later God has sedated
03:33
God, oh, you didn't hear, I don't think you heard the power of what I said. God has a when.
03:38
He's not making this up as he goes. So T .D. Jakes designs his entire sermon around this word when in Psalm 126 verses 1 through 2, but there are at least two serious problems with the teaching offered in the clip we just watched.
03:52
Let's analyze the clips as we compare them to Scripture, starting with number one. Jakes immediately takes this vague concept of when, and one of the first points he makes about it is about healing.
04:04
So let's go ahead and watch that part of the clip again, and you'll see what I mean. Watch this. It is possible to be going through a process of healing and know it's coming, but don't know when.
04:17
Of course, this should not be surprising to us considering his track record of prosperity preaching. In fact, it would be very surprising if there ever came a sermon in which
04:25
T .D. Jakes did not emphasize healing. The problem is that most of the time he artificially inserts this topic into passages and into texts of Scripture that do not actually talk about it or promise it.
04:37
And this is no exception. Here he says, quote, it is possible to be going through a process of healing and know it's coming, but don't know when.
04:46
But yet again, we can see that word when is at the forefront. Notice the implication of his statement.
04:52
It implies that you should probably be expecting healing in your life, and you can know that it's coming your way even if you don't know when it's going to get there.
05:00
He speaks about healing from God as if it's an Amazon package on the way to your house. The problem is that there is no real acknowledgment of God's sovereignty in the matter, though.
05:10
You see, to T .D. Jakes, God is sovereign over when you get your healing, but He is not truly sovereign over if you get your healing.
05:17
Now that part is up to you. Your healing is already on its way so long as you have enough faith and believe
05:23
God for it. It's coming, but you don't know when. And of course, the solid evidence for this, the incredible argument he makes, is, brace yourself,
05:31
Psalm 126 verse 1 said the word when one time. Forgive me if I don't find that convincing.
05:37
But as you may have guessed, the passage simply uses the word when in order to tell you when the events in the passage occurred.
05:44
All it said was, quote, when the Lord restored the fortunes of Zion, we were like those who dream. There is no promise of healing in your life here.
05:52
There is no guarantee that you can know healing is coming your way, but you just don't know when.
05:57
That's not what the word means. No, all T .D. Jakes has demonstrated here is that he's perfectly capable of some basic tongue twisters and simple word association.
06:06
He has not demonstrated in the slightest way that his preaching is in accordance with the passage that he claims to be preaching from.
06:13
The word when being used in Psalm 126 verse 1 does not promise you healing at all.
06:18
It simply doesn't say that. And this brings us to number two. T .D. Jakes says that the word when in the passage is meant as a, quote, promise.
06:27
Watch this again. But then when is also a promise because it lets me know that God has a when, that whatever
06:36
I'm going through, I will not always go through it, that sooner or later God has sedated
06:41
God. So here Jakes tells us that the word when is a promise to you because it shows us that, quote,
06:49
God has a when. But again, we must ask the question, where is this in the text?
06:54
The answer is simply nowhere. It's all being made up, fabricated, manipulated by T .D.
06:59
Jakes. The Apostle Paul writes to the church in Corinth saying this, that he was given a thorn in the flesh, some sort of suffering or difficulty that he did not want, whether spiritual or physical or otherwise.
07:10
And in 2 Corinthians 12, 8 through 9, Paul says this, quote, three times I pleaded with the
07:16
Lord about this, that it should leave me. But he said to me, my grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.
07:24
You see, Paul had a problem, one that he did not want to possess. And he asked the Lord to take it away.
07:30
But yet the Lord chose not to. Contrast this with what Jakes said. He said, quote, whatever you're going through, you will not always go through it.
07:38
It simply couldn't be clearer than that. And before anyone tries to offer a technicality, let me assure you that I watched the full clip.
07:45
And no, there is no evidence that Jakes was referring to eternal life in heaven when he made this comment.
07:50
You see, according to T .D. Jakes, God has promised that no matter what you're going through, there is a when, a time and place in this life that He has designated to take this problem away from you.
08:01
But that's not what happened to the Apostle Paul. And it's not what happens to many Christians. Therefore, we must conclude that the preaching of T .D.
08:08
Jakes contradicts the teaching of Paul and the teaching of the Bible. In other words, Jakes is an outright false teacher.
08:15
The word when in Psalm 126 is not a promise to you for your personal life. And to make a false promise on behalf of God, no less, is dangerous and unbiblical.
08:26
You see, the problem is that the emphasis on healing and prosperity and success used by T .D.
08:31
Jakes and many other false teachers, it just absolutely pollutes their understanding of God's Word. And this happens to the point that they can't seem to see anything else.
08:40
There is an obvious obsession with money, healing, and man. And that is the defining characteristic of teachers like T .D.
08:47
Jakes. But the fact is, suffering can happen in the Christian life. They don't seem to mention that. In Romans 8 .18,
08:54
Paul says this, quote, For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.
09:03
Paul does not promise that God will take away all your suffering in this life because God has a when.
09:08
But there is a much better promise for Christians in the next life that we will no longer suffer ever.
09:14
And he is so sure about the greatness of eternal life with Christ that he feels no need to make false promises and guarantees of healing and wealth and change in your circumstances.
09:24
The sufferings of this life are simply not worth comparing to the glory of being with the
09:29
Lord forever. Fundamentally, that is what the prosperity gospel is missing, and that is why T .D.
09:34
Jakes is a false teacher for advancing it. I pray that this has been a blessing to you, and please know that this video isn't meant as a sinful attack, but rather as a
09:43
Biblical critique. So let's pray for T .D. Jakes, that he would stop this false teaching by God's grace and turn to the truth of God's Word.
