TiL- Hebrews 1:13-14

We're gonna be talking about Hebrews chapter 1 we're gonna be looking at Hebrews chapter 1 verses 13 and 14 one of the most quoted passages from the Old Testament.

That quarterly had a theme of authority. That was God's authority. Do you know if anything else is coming up that maybe have a theme of authority?

We have to have a conference coming up. I'm glad you mentioned it and it's it's free admission. I Think we are going to take up some some offerings at the conference but it's free admission and that's one of the things that I Really wanted to do because some of the conference that are out there that they're great and I understand why they have to do it they They have to rent out these larger facilities they have Big name speakers that cost a lot of money.

They have to house them and so a lot of money is involved and I understand that but I Didn't want this conference to be that I didn't want it to be a burden for people. And I want people to come and and not be kept back from The conference because of the cost so it's free admission.

Hebrews 1 and Psalm 110 as the Key Old Testament Quotation

We're gonna be looking at Hebrews chapter 1 we're gonna finish chapter 1 and We're gonna look at verses 13 and 14 the Hebrews the author of Hebrews quotes and is quoting a Passage in the Old Testament that is one of the most quoted in the new if not the most.

It is the most the most quoted in the New Testament from the Old Testament. Let me go ahead and read it Verse 13, but to which of the angels has he ever said? Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.

Are they not all ministering spirits sent out to render service for the sake of those who will inherit? Salvation. I've talked a lot Dan. You want to take over for a minute? Sure, okay.

This is a really It's a really it's a very action-packed passage right here. The the psalm that it's quoting is psalm 110. Psalm 10 is like Robert said the most quoted psalm and all of the New Testament and For good reason it shows in many different ways Christ deity his his Superiority his supremacy over all things over everything which is exactly what Hebrews is doing if you remember if you've seen previous episodes of our podcast, you know that we we'd said that Hebrews is kind of like a Multi-faceted diamond you're able to look at different aspects of of The scriptures and although see how all of them when they come together give you a great wonderful beautiful picture of Christ and his revelation to us.

So that when we look at these different aspects of what has been shown to us in the Old Testament We see Christ all throughout no for instance here in chapter one. We looked at how the angels were less than Christ how Christ was superior to the angels and not just superior, but he is Deity he is God.

If you move on into chapter 2 it starts talking about mankind. Mankind is you know? Good. Not good. All right, let me back up was created good. We have fallen so mankind mankind in and of itself is not a bad thing, but we have fallen.

So is Christ superior to man absolutely because he is pure holy he is God. So he's superior to us in those ways. Look at chapter 3 talks about Jesus as our high priest. He's better than the high priest of the Old Testament system.

Look at chapter 4 it talks about the the Sabbath rest that is found in Christ. So when you look at the the Old Testament Sabbath. It finds its fulfillment its ultimate fulfillment in the rest that each and every believer finds Christ you move on into the different the different chapters and it talks about Melchizedek's priesthood and the New Covenant and how the church gathers together and how all of these things point to Christ and how he is superior to The Old Covenant system that was pointing to him.

And it's the same thing when you look at this verse that is quoted here from Psalm Psalm 110 and not just that verse but all of Psalm 110 Shows different aspects of how Christ is superior to all things so I think what we're planning on doing this evening is actually looking at Psalm 110 and seeing how Psalm 110 is Quoted in the New Testament and Then we're going to pick up on the the different themes that flow through that and we're gonna do all of that in the next 17 minutes so we can do it.

So If you are following along with your Bible. You're gonna we're gonna put your fingers to work tonight because we're going all over the place. But first off I've got two Bibles out in front of me just so I can keep one in Psalm 110 and then one to flip to the different passages, but if you have two Bibles turn one of them to Psalm 110 turn the other one to.

We'll start in Matthew 22. So as your right hand is turning there your left hand can read this passage. That way you can always Be moving. It's an old Jeff Foxworthy joke that we're not gonna repeat on on it on the air, but Here we go.

Psalm 110 says this it's seven verses says the Lord says to my Lord. Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies your footstool. The Lord sends forth from Zion your mighty scepter. Rule in the midst of your enemies your people will offer themselves Freely on that day of on the day of your power in holy garments from the womb of the morning.

The dew of your youth the dew of your youth will be yours. The Lord is sworn and will not change his mind. You are a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek. The Lord is at your right hand. He will shatter Kings on the day of his wrath.

Execute judgment among the nations. Filling them with corpses. He will shatter chiefs over the wide earth. He will drink from the brook by the way, therefore he will lift his head. There's a lot there.

So we'll just start with the first line. Right. We'll just start with the first line of the Lord says to my Lord. I'm really it's good. A lot of these quotations are going to take on the whole first verse, but we'll start back in.

In Matthew 22, we'll pick up. Let's see verse 30 30 40 41, but I'll give you some context. Jesus is speaking with the Sadducees who say there's no resurrection of the dead. He's he's telling them. They don't really understand what they're asking is we're trying to trap him they're trying to say, you know, who's who's uh, this is what I say.

This guy died and his brother married the lady and that brother and that brother. None of them had kids. So whose wife will she be in the resurrection? He's like you're not really understanding what the scriptures are trying to say here.

You're you're straining at things that you don't really understand he's. So they're trying to trap him but when you get down into verse 41 He's trying to explain to them that they don't really understand what they're talking about.

He says now he says now while the Pharisees were gathered together Jesus asked them a question. So he was talking with the Sadducees and the Pharisees the Pharisees are now there and he's asking the Pharisees a question.

What do you think about the Christ? Whose son is he he's trying to pinpoint to prove to them. They don't know the scriptures as well as they think they do. Which honestly we could take that lesson for ourselves.

We probably don't know them as we definitely don't know what know them as well as we should. I should always know them better. He says who do you think? Or what do you think about the Christ whose son is he and they said to him the son of David?

And why is that well because David wrote Psalm 110. And you're saying it's a psalm of David. He's saying sit at my right hand. So Jesus goes on he says then how does David in the Spirit call him Lord?

So you see you're not understanding then he quotes us is the Lord says to my Lord sit at my right hand. So the Lord God Almighty in heaven says to my Lord David's Lord Sit at my right hand. It's not David's son.

Per se it is his grandson according to the lineage and genealogy. But that's not what he's getting at way saying the Lord said he said the Lord said to my Lord God Almighty said to David's Lord sit here at my right hand until what until I make or until I put Your enemies beneath your feet.

I was quoting it from the book of Psalms for worship. It's one that we sing frequently in the RPC and I It says so he asked him the question if David then calls him Lord. How is he his son? And no one was able to answer him a word nor did they dare speak or dare from that day on to ask him another question.

So he's proving to them from this passage here. Because David is talking about someone else the Christ that comes is going to be the Son of God. It's going to be the second person of the Trinity's proving the deity of the Messiah, which I just think is really cool.

Thoughts. Robert. Well, I mean, that's what he said. I talked for a while now you talk for a while. I mean, that's pretty amazing. What he's doing here is. Well, this is what I was thinking about it as you were going through this passage.

The the position of David and how how David would have been so elevated in their mind the position of David their ancestor their their their king and Being at the top of the lineage of of the Messiah to come like you were talking about and Jesus is saying, okay.

Yes. He he's elevated, you know, he's up here like you like you're thinking but also He has a Lord and Master and That's who he's speaking to here. And so his his son or the Messiah to come is going to is going to be the Lord and Master over This this one that you have elevated or that you know is elevated above you already so much.

How much more elevated is his Lord and Master and how much how much did you be looking to him above David? Right, right.

It's really neat because what you're seeing here is is Jesus ahead of time. Before he actually tells the folks on the road to Emmaus that all the Old Testament law and the prophets were pointing to me.

He's showing them that the law and the prophets are speaking about him. Yeah that that the whole of revelation was coming to this point showing that that Christ is Supreme that he is God come in the flesh.

And That he is he is higher than David. He's showing how how Christ cut out that when the Christ comes it's God coming and he is higher and better than all of the the national Religion that they had had set up.

As good as it was because it was given to them by God as good as it was Christ. God was bringing something better Than they had before because they were getting to know it in the fullness. They're getting to know it through salvation through Christ who would come and die on the cross for them and then reign over them in true salvation in true form not through an a a King like like David but someone who you know, even though David had was a man after God's own heart.

Christ is so much better than that. Yeah.

Yeah, and if they could make that connection It would be nice. It would be beneficial for them to make that connection because I think it's interesting that You know Oftentimes when the Old Testament is quoted Well, the whole thing is not quoted here.

He only quotes a portion of it, but he could have quoted, you know, even a smaller portion of it. But what he does include here is The rest of that, you know verse The Lord said to my Lord sit at my right hand Until I put your enemies beneath your feet, right?

Let's make a connection here. Okay? We're looking for We're looking for the the son of David the Son of God. We're looking for the Messiah and and Jesus is making that connection here that he's claiming to be that one that that's not and There's gonna be some enemies and Their their path moving forward doesn't look too bright right say something David it looked dark.

Yeah. Yeah, so so let's make that connection here. I Don't want to be Counted in that number, right? So how do I how do I escape that and I think that's I Think that's what the you know, of course Jesus and and the authors of the New Testament, especially Paul, you know.

That's that's what he wanted if I could If I could give myself so that they could be saved basically what he was saying They wanted they wanted these people to get it. Yep, and And to not be in the position of being the enemy of Christ because they are going to be counted in that number of Being a footstool being underneath his feet, right?

Of course, it's not just It's not just religious leaders. It's not just the these Jews here at this time. But but it's speaking of All throughout the this making all things new throughout the millennium where Jesus is is crushing and putting underneath his feet all enemies all All that sin has caused all that the fall has caused.

He's putting under his feet and so yeah, you know what what a connection to make. Yeah that they missed I don't want to be his enemy. I want to be his friend. Yeah. Well, you've got two options there.

Maybe they missed it and they didn't know he was talking about so I didn't want to ask him any more questions. Or perhaps They did and realize that they better be quiet. Otherwise, maybe people are going to go away and follow Christ, which really they all should have been.

Yeah, so you're you're left with a few options there. Well if anything it if anything. It should have piqued their interest. Because they they were looking for this political ruler to come and still honor that.

Is gonna do that exact thing? Put. But they were looking for this Messiah to come and put their enemies down get rid of them. Yeah, and that's what?

When you think about it some some of the folks who the Pharisees who were there and Condemning Christ who were not wanting him to to succeed and weren't trying to silence him and shut him up. Some of these very same ones Were most likely there at the Day of Pentecost Heard repented and believed so even there even their unbelief was was a part of God's plan for it for a time to see the salvation of many so Just throw a whole nother.

Aspect another cut in the diamond. That's right. The the next the next line or that that line. Until I make your enemies of your footstool. That's also quoted in the 10th chapter of Hebrews. Hebrew Hebrews quotes this thing a lot.

Quotes it in chapter 1 chapter 10 chapter 7 6 7 again twice more alludes to it in chapter 2 and chapter 6. Chapter 8 10 again and 12. I mean, it's all over the place. But in chapter 10, he actually quotes this one you start in chapter 10 verse 11 says every priest stands daily talking about the Priest in Christ how he's more sufficient or is sufficient.

Every priest stands daily ministering and offering time after time the same sacrifices which can never Take away sins, but he having offered one sacrifice for sins for all time Sat down at the right hand of God waiting from that time onward Until his enemies be made a footstool for his feet.

So what is it that the priests were doing when they were offering sacrifices? They're offering sacrifices for the cleansing of the flesh. As a sacramental Sacramental picture of the the coming Messiah who is going to take away their sins.

What he's saying here is he is that Messiah? He is that Christ? He doesn't have to stand up and be represented as a sacrifice. He doesn't have to go and die over and over again for sins. He made Forgiveness he made propitiation for sins once he was Proficient for sins once and then sat down and now what's happening is all of his enemies the ones who were trying to put him Down he's a waiting for them to be put under his feet.

Now what you have there's a complete conquering of the entire world and you may be like well not everybody's his enemy. So how is that complete conquering but you have a conquering in two ways number one you see the footstool for his feet when he is Ruler putting his foot down on the neck of his enemies.

He is actually punishing the wicked. The other way or first way on whichever way you want to look at it is Christ taking his enemies and making them as friends because when he paid for sins He took those ones who are enemies and defeated them in such a way that they weren't destroyed, but the day became friends.

They were on his side now. They were Regenerated in their heart and brought into a new faith in Christ. So you have a complete conquering of the world there? So he made forgiveness for sins and now he awaits those who?

Reject that forgiveness to be put under his feet. Yeah.

Absolutely, I think it's interesting the the contrast that is Clearly brought out here in the in the passage that you read these priests. They were they were standing, you know daily continually making sacrifices.

Jesus made the sacrifice. It was sufficient. He was able to sit down and He sat down at the place of authority, which is the right hand of God, but he sat down it's finished and now This this putting enemies under his feet is a Result or exercising that victory throughout.

You know, this is Waiting from that time onward so moving forward. That we see this exercising of that victory the the overflow of that victory working itself out. About enemies being defeated and put it put under his feet.

Yep.

Good stuff. Yep, absolutely. Let's see, I'm gonna squeeze another one in here real quick.

Well, I'm trying to. Well, I'm trying to figure out what we what we should do. I know we wanted to stick with 30 minutes, but since we're live do we want to keep going or do we want to?

Yeah, listen to the big old Harry Fox a little bit I guess. Rook real quick. I'll do one real quick and then we'll do some other stuff later. Okay, if you go down to in Psalm 110 verse 3 It says your people will offer themselves freely on the day of your power in Holy garments from the womb of the morning the dew of your youth will be yours.

That isn't necessarily quoted expressly, but it is alluded to in the book of Revelation Chapter 19 and since the book of Revelation is not controversial at all. I figure I'll just go there so Look at chapter 19 verse 11 of Revelation says.

And I saw the heaven open and behold a white horse and he who sat on his faith called faithful and true talking about Christ and In righteousness he judges and wages war. His eyes are a flame of fire and on his head or many diadems and He has a name written on him, which no one knows except for himself.

He is clothed with a robe dipped in blood and his name is called the Word of God. Now that's a picture of Jesus that many people don't see. No riding on a noble steed dipped in blood white sash whoo. It says.

And the armies which are in heaven Clothed in fine linen white and clean were following him on white horses. From his mouth comes a sharp sword so that with it he may strike down the nations and He will rule them with a rod of iron and he treads the winepress of the fierce wrath of God the Almighty.

So, what is it that Christ is doing up in heaven. Christ is up in heaven he is coming to the earth. Figuratively, I believe because this is him riding a horse, you know through the sky. And he's bringing with him all army from heaven this clothed in white linen.

Now listen here back over here at Psalm 110 verse 3 your people will offer themselves freely. Let me back up to the verse before The Lord sends forth from Zion your mighty scepter. Rule in the midst of your enemies.

So you have the one who's called Lord ruling in the midst of his enemies. Your people will free will offer themselves freely on the day of your power in Holy garments white clean linens of Revelation.

From the womb of the morning the dew of your youth will be yours. What we're seeing here is Christ conquering his enemies While seated in heaven waging war upon those who will not bow the knee to Christ.

So We see this theme all throughout scripture. Psalm 2 Psalm 45. Psalm 110. We see it here in Revelation previous places. All over the place what Christ is doing is he has come Paid for sins once and for all he's now seated at the right hand of the Father in heaven.

The Lord said to my Lord sit at my right hand. He's seated on the throne of David now ruling and reigning and Bringing all enemies under subjection either through the word of the gospel or through the wrath of judgment.

That's right. So we have a choice. Because that involves everyone on the planet. Everyone on the planet now has to understand Has to recognize I'm either going to be an enemy of God. I'm going to love God.

I'm gonna trust in his salvation. I'm gonna trust in the one who died and rose from the grave and sits on the right hand of the Father or I'm gonna Wage war against him. Those are our only options. There is no middle ground.

There is no neutrality, right? But Because of what Christ has done Christ coming to the earth living a perfect life dying a death that we couldn't taking his our sin upon himself. Dying and then raising again and now seated at the right hand of the Father.

He's not just there waging war with with a sword to kill. But he's waging war also by saying come and find your rest in me. So every single person who Trusts and believes in the Lord repents of their sin will find him to be an absolutely perfect Savior.

And that is a wonderful and glorious thing to see here in the scriptures.

Amen, and if you've not turned to Christ From your sins and turn to him as your Savior putting your faith and trust in him. We encourage you to do that. We encourage you to share those words of life With with everyone, you know with with your family with your children at the marketplace at work To to our governing bodies everybody everybody needs to to hear the words of life.

The Weapon of choice here in Revelation as Dan read is a sword and that sword represents the Word of God Christ himself. This is this is a subject, you know, we've talked about so many times Jesus Jesus is the Word of God.

Yep, and and that's what he that's what it says here in verse 13 he is the Word of God and the the sword is coming out of his mouth the the Word of God is sharper than any two-edged sword and It's the Word of God that is that it's his weapon of choice that he's either using to save and protect his people or it's the instrument of judgment and wrath and it's and it's the Word of God on this earth and so thank you Dan for for sharing the gospel and We we implore you to come to Christ heed the Word of God heed the Word of Life and And be blessed by it and share it with others.

Let me pray as we close Father, thank you for letting us look at your word and all all these verses that you have orchestrated working together to show us the picture of your glory and who you are and and your glorious Son and the work that he did on the cross and and how he Rose from the grave he ascended and he sits at your right hand in authority and he is he's ruling and reigning and he is working through Himself working through his word Saving lives and bringing justice To the earth and we're so thankful that you allowed us to know your son.
