Hey guys, Colin here, and welcome back to Fight For Truth, the channel where we bring you Christian commentary about the things that matter.
00:07
In today's video, we're going to be talking about a new sermon from Sarah Jakes. Sarah is the daughter of Prosperity Gospel preacher
00:14
T .D. Jakes, and together, they comprise the main teachers of the Potters House Church in Dallas, Texas.
00:21
And in today's video, we are going to offer a biblical response to several claims that Sarah Jakes made in her recent message entitled, quote,
00:28
A Bold Move. So without any further introduction, let's get right into it. The first issue that comes almost immediately in the sermon is
00:36
Sarah's claim to receive private communication from God. Watch this. I love you, girl.
00:42
Y 'all pray for me. I never, ever have an opportunity to speak where I feel like I got this.
00:51
Sometimes I'll be praying like, God, I just want to feel like I got this. But God told me if you ever got this, you won't need me.
01:03
Notice, she says that God personally told her this message. She says, and I quote,
01:08
God told me. And this isn't the only time that she claims to receive direct divine communication.
01:14
She also mentions it at the end of her prayer. Watch this. Just an intimate conversation with you,
01:21
God. Do that thing that you do when you have decided it's time for somebody to bust a move.
01:30
Open our hearts to receive. Open the channel that I may hear from you clearly.
01:36
And when it's all said and done, may just one life, God, be changed. So in this clip, you'll notice that as Sarah prays, she asked
01:45
God to, quote, open the channel so that she can hear him clearly. Effectively, she is implying that there is some sort of spiritual channel of communication coming specifically to her from God.
01:56
And she doesn't specify that this communication is coming through the Bible. In fact, the context of both of her statements would indicate that the communication is coming from the opposite, outside of the
02:07
Scriptures. So what do we make of this? Is Sarah Jakes actually receiving direct words from God?
02:13
Well, here's why I wouldn't come to that conclusion. It's quite simple. I don't believe that Sarah is receiving direct communication from God because her very position at her father's church is a violation of what
02:24
God has already said in His Word. First Timothy 2 .12 says, quote, I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man.
02:34
For Adam was formed first, then Eve. End quote. You see, contrary to this passage,
02:39
Sarah is clearly teaching and holding spiritual authority in their church. So my contention is this.
02:45
Quite simply, if God is speaking directly to her, why wouldn't He mention the fact that her entire ministry is unbiblical?
02:52
That seems to be a pretty big detail to miss. Moreover, if God is speaking to her, why has
02:58
God not yet told her that she and her father are falsely teaching the prosperity gospel as well?
03:03
Again, that's a pretty big detail to just leave out. You see, Sarah claims that she has a channel she can sort of tune into to hear
03:10
God speaking. But the preponderance of evidence would indicate that this is not true. There is not a single biblical reason to believe
03:18
Sarah Jakes is a true prophet of the Lord. For one thing, she has no established track record of predicting anything about the future.
03:25
And more than this, she has demonstrated a consistent pattern of false teaching and unbiblical practices in her ministry.
03:32
In other words, she is falsely claiming to receive direct communication from God. And that means that she is by definition a false prophet.
03:40
And therefore, her teaching should be avoided as dangerous according to Jesus Himself in Matthew 7, 15, who would refer to false prophets as wolves in sheep's clothing.
03:49
But of course, this is not the only evidence we have of Sarah twisting the Scriptures. Not even close.
03:55
In the next clip, she tells you what passage she'll be preaching from. Watch this. Here I am, unguided, tired of being unguided, but she up here anyway, y 'all pray for me.
04:09
So, my subject is a bold move. First Samuel, chapter 10, verse 20 through 27.
04:23
So she will be preaching in the book of First Samuel and in the 10th chapter. To give you a brief summary, this chapter deals basically with both the anointing of Saul and the proclamation of Saul as Israel's first king.
04:35
As the story goes, after casting lots, they were looking for Saul, but they could not find him. So they asked the
04:41
Lord about this, and in response, God says, Behold, he has hidden himself among the baggage.
04:48
So they look among the baggage, and lo and behold, they find Saul. And all the people shout, Long live the king, as he is proclaimed the first king of Israel.
04:56
This is the narrative story in the history of Israel about the process by which Saul became king.
05:02
It's that simple. And with that in mind, let's see what Sarah Jakes does with this account. It's pretty shocking.
05:08
Watch this. That's all I wanted too. If breaking a chain means you came up a little higher, that's all that matters to me.
05:15
I may not be the first millionaire, I may not be the first billionaire, but I'm gonna leave a rope because I'm gonna be the first thousandaire.
05:24
I'm gonna be the first hundredaire. I'm gonna kick something off in my family that ain't never been kicked off again.
05:31
I'm gonna kick something off from my generation that has never been kicked off before.
05:37
So as they play intense, inspirational music in the background of the sermon, Sarah Jakes yells into the microphone various vague motivational musings.
05:45
She goes on, encouraging the audience that they may not be the first millionaires and billionaires in their family, but they can of course be the first thousandaires and hundredaires.
05:54
And in so doing, they are going to, in her words, kickstart something in their family that has never been seen before.
06:01
But amidst all of this yelling and confusion, it may be beneficial for us to ask one pretty basic question.
06:07
What exactly does any of this have to do with 1 Samuel 10? After all, that's what we're supposed to be hearing preached, right?
06:14
Essentially, it seems Sarah Jakes is implying that Saul being proclaimed king is some sort of metaphor for you making more money and being more successful.
06:23
Of course, there is absolutely zero evidence for this in the passage. And besides that, the analogy really doesn't work.
06:30
Sarah is speaking to a large crowd of people about their amazing destinies, but the story of Saul is about one man who is chosen to be one king, not the entire crowd.
06:40
So it seems that in Sarah's preaching here, there's a lot of smoke, but very little fire. You can hear a lot of sizzle, but there's no steak to be found.
06:47
But this isn't the only part of the sermon where vague motivational screaming takes the place of actual biblical teaching.
06:54
Watch this. But because there was separation, you don't even know everything I put in you.
07:00
But I hear God saying, it's still in you to win. It's still in you to create.
07:05
It's still in you to have dominion. It's still in you to subdue. It's still in you to tread on serpents.
07:11
It's still in you to walk through hell and not get burned. It's still in you to talk through a serpent and not lose your head.
07:18
It's still in you. So again, we have more vague yelling about how amazing you hypothetically are.
07:28
Apparently, Saul being made king is a metaphor for you winning in life and creating something great.
07:33
And what you need to realize is that you've had these incredible abilities in you all along because you're just that special.
07:39
That's why Sarah says these things are, quote, still in you. They always have been. There are two issues here, though.
07:45
First, this really, again, has nothing to do with the passage whatsoever. Saul being made king is not a metaphor for you accomplishing everything you want in your life.
07:55
It's simply not. Again, we need to understand that the entire chosen people of God, that is, Israel, were present here.
08:01
But only one of them, Saul, was actually made king. So, preaching this kind of message completely ignores the real historical context of 1
08:10
Samuel chapter 10. And that's why the sermon sounds like nonsense when you try to analyze it biblically.
08:16
Because it wasn't meant to be biblical in the first place. It was meant to get people excited. Second, Saul eventually becomes wicked and falls from grace and his throne is taken away from him.
08:26
When we last encounter Saul, it is in 1 Samuel chapter 31. In verse 2, Saul's sons are killed, and as a result,
08:35
You see, in the end, Saul kills himself in utter despair, having completely lost his kingdom.
08:42
So when you use the example of Saul being made king as some sort of metaphor for Christians making more money and succeeding in their life, does that imply that these
08:50
Christians will eventually lose everything God gave them, like Saul did? You see, when you take a passage out of context in this way and refuse to pay any attention to proper exegesis, you end up with some serious problems, as you can see.
09:04
Also, Sarah puts nearly all the emphasis here on you and the special abilities that you've apparently always had.
09:11
But this is the opposite of the lesson that we should be taking away from Saul's life. Saul lost everything precisely because he thought too much of himself, he was prideful, and he did not submit to God's commands.
09:23
1 Samuel 15 10 says, For he has turned back from following me and has not performed my commandments.
09:34
So when we look at Saul's life, our takeaway should not be that we are special and amazing and we've always been that way, just like Saul.
09:42
Rather, we should remember that we are fallible beings who need to humble ourselves by the grace of God. But, of course, because Sarah Jakes has ignored the context, she preaches the exact opposite message.
09:53
This, ladies and gentlemen, is the danger of man -centered teaching. The real concern is that so many people go to church and hear what is called a sermon and yet miss the point of Scripture entirely.
10:04
It's not just a small mistake, in other words. It is a method of preaching that will lead us to false conclusions that will ultimately hurt people spiritually.
10:12
And this explains so much of what we're seeing in the modern evangelical church. But with that said, let's look at yet another clip from this message that is deeply concerning.
10:22
Watch this. And the mission... The mission requires that I come out of this trance.
10:35
The mission requires that I come out of this trance.
10:44
So notice that Sarah Jakes had a brief pause there to practice what is so -called speaking in tongues.
10:50
The problem is that preaching in this manner is directly unbiblical. Now personally, for a litany of reasons,
10:56
I do not believe that the miraculous gifts like healing, speaking in tongues, prophecy, etc. are normative in the
11:02
Church today. I'm a cessationist, in other words. But you don't have to be a cessationist to read that 1 Corinthians 14, 27 says this, quote,
11:10
If any speak in a tongue, let there be only two or at most three, and each in turn, and let someone interpret.
11:18
But if there is no one to interpret, let each of them keep silent in church and speak to himself and to God, end quote.
11:27
In other words, especially when someone is preaching from the pulpit, which is supposed to be a man, by the way, but when someone is speaking in church, they are commanded not to speak in tongues unless there is someone present who is capable of interpreting what is being said.
11:41
And this command is fundamentally ignored by T .D. Jakes and Sarah Jakes all the time, as they will often break into so -called tongue speaking in the middle of a sermon, as you just saw.
11:51
But, again, this is not a practice that is endorsed by Scripture. In fact, we are explicitly told not to do it.
11:57
And, by the way, let's think back to the beginning of this video where Sarah Jakes claims that she has direct communication with God Himself.
12:05
Now, why is it that God hasn't told her to stop doing this? It seems that ever so conveniently, when
12:11
God speaks to her, He only ever tells her to spread vague, seeker -sensitive messages that get very popular on YouTube.
12:17
Again, very convenient. But, apparently, God never critiques her false teaching on biblical feminism and disordered liturgy.
12:24
Isn't that pretty incredible? Well, yes. In fact, I would make the case that it's far too incredible to be the least bit true or convincing.
12:32
Sarah Jakes claims to have a channel through which she can hear God. Yet, she constantly misrepresents the objective
12:38
Word of God. Again, she is a false prophet. And this man -centered sermon demonstrates that clearly.
12:44
So, please, mark and avoid the teaching of Sarah Jakes and her father T .D. Jakes. And know this video isn't meant as a sinful attack, but rather as a biblical critique.
12:53
