One of the most misunderstood teachings in the modern church is the doctrine of the Trinity.
00:06
Yet the Trinity is one of the most important and historically significant things that we believe as Christians.
00:13
It is what separates Orthodox Christianity from other monotheistic religions, and it also distinguishes between true Christian faith and many cult groups.
00:24
The first thing to remember about understanding the Trinity is that it is a profound truth with which there is no analogy.
00:33
You cannot compare the Trinity with anything else in nature.
00:37
Some have tried to make it similar to an egg, which has three parts, the yolk, the white, and the shell.
00:43
Others have tried to compare it to how an individual can be in three different relationships.
00:47
A man can be a father, a son, and a husband.
00:50
But all of these fail because they end up saying something about the Trinity which is not true.
00:57
It is best to remember that God is holy, which means that he is absolutely unique and therefore there is nothing in creation which is comparable to him.
01:07
Isaiah 46.9 God says, I am God and there is no other.
01:12
I am God and there is none like me.
01:17
So how do we define the Trinity if there are not perfect analogies in nature? There are three principles which the Bible teaches which need to be remembered.
01:27
One, there is only one God.
01:31
Two, there are three persons who are called God and have the characteristics of God, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
01:41
These three persons interact with one another.
01:45
Therefore, they are not the same person.
01:49
Based on these biblical truths, we can define the Trinity as follows.
01:55
One, God is one in essence or being.
01:59
Two, God is three in person.
02:03
Three, these three persons are all co-equal, co-eternal, and distinct.
02:10
The key to understanding the heart of the doctrine is distinguishing between being and person.
02:17
A tree has being but not person.
02:20
A man has both being and person.
02:23
God has being and three persons share that one being.
02:29
The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are all God and therefore should be worshipped as God.
02:36
This is why Christian worship has always been Trinitarian.
02:41
We worship one God in three persons, blessed Trinity.
02:46
We sing, Praise God, from whom all blessings flow.
02:51
Praise Him, all creatures here below.
02:55
Praise Him above, ye heavenly hosts.
02:58
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.
03:03
Amen.
