10:52
I would like to welcome you all to Kongsvinger Lutheran Church. Today is the transfiguration of our
10:58
Lord, kind of a big day in the church here, and we will be following the order of divine service setting two.
11:06
On the intro it will be using psalm tone B as in bangerang, B as in bangerang, and if you are physically present here at Kongsvinger in the building, please rise for the opening hymn 412.
14:30
In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, if we say we have no sin we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.
14:54
Let us then confess our sins to God our Father. Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean.
15:03
We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed by what we have done and by what we have left undone.
15:11
We have not loved you with our whole heart. We have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.
15:18
We justly deserve your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of your
15:23
Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us, forgive us, renew us, and lead us so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways.
15:33
To the glory of your holy name, amen. Almighty God in his mercy has given his son to die for you and for his sake he forgives you all of your sins.
15:43
As a called and ordained servant of Christ and by his authority, I therefore forgive you all of your sins in the name of the
15:50
Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Psalm tone
15:55
B. Your lightnings lighted up the world.
16:21
How lovely is your dwelling place, O Lord of hosts.
16:33
Blessed are those who dwell in your house. For a day in your courts is better than a thousand elsewhere.
16:58
For the Lord God is a sun and shield. The Lord bestows favor and honor.
17:13
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the
17:21
Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now and will be forever.
17:33
Amen. Your lightnings lighted up the world.
17:59
In peace let us pray to the Lord. For the peace from above and for our salvation, let us pray to the
18:16
Lord. For the peace of the whole world, for the well -being of the
18:28
Church of God, and for the unity of all, let us pray to the
18:35
Lord. For this holy house and for all who offer here their worship and praise, let us pray to the
18:50
Lord. Help, save, comfort, and defend us, gracious Lord.
19:09
This is the feast of victory for our
19:15
God. Hallelujah. The Lord be with you.
21:04
Let us pray. O God, in the glorious transfiguration of your beloved
21:10
Son, you confirm the mysteries of the faith by the testimony of Moses and Elijah. In the voice that came from the bright cloud, you wonderfully foreshadowed our adoption by grace.
21:21
Mercifully make us co -heirs with the King in his glory, and bring us to the fullness of our inheritance in heaven, through the same
21:28
Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you in the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
21:35
Amen. You may be seated. The Old Testament reading for the transfiguration of our
21:46
Lord is taken from the book of Exodus chapter 34. When Moses came down from Mount Sinai with the two tablets of the testimony in his hand, he came down from the mountain.
22:00
Moses did not know that the skin of his face shone, because he had been talking with God. Aaron and all the people of Israel saw
22:07
Moses, and behold, the skin of his face shone, and they were afraid to come near him.
22:13
But Moses called to them, and Aaron and all the leaders of the congregation returned to him, and Moses talked with them.
22:20
Afterward, all the people of Israel came near, and he commanded them all that the Lord had spoken with him in Mount Sinai, and when
22:27
Moses had finished speaking with them, he put a veil over his face. Whenever Moses went in before the
22:33
Lord to speak with him, he would remove the veil until he came out, and when he came out, he told the people of Israel what was commanded.
22:43
The people of Israel would see the face of Moses, that the skin of Moses' face was shining, and Moses would put the veil over his face again until he went in to speak with him.
22:53
This is the word of the Lord. Speak the gradual together.
22:59
You are the most handsome of the sons of men, the
23:04
Lord says to my Lord, sit at my right hand. The epistle is taken from 2nd
23:17
Peter chapter 1. For we do not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and the coming of our
23:28
Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. For when he received honor and glory from God the
23:34
Father, and the voice was born to him by the majestic glory, this is my beloved Son with whom
23:40
I am well pleased. We ourselves heard this very voice born from heaven, for we were with him on the holy mountain, and we have something more sure, the prophetic word to which you will do well to pay attention, as to a lamp shining in a dark place until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.
23:57
Knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone's own interpretation, for no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the
24:09
Holy Spirit. This is the word of the Lord. The Holy Gospel according to St.
24:36
Matthew the 17th chapter. After six days
24:47
Jesus took with him Peter and James and John his brother and led them up a high mountain by themselves.
24:53
And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became white as light.
24:59
And behold there appeared to them Moses and Elijah talking with them. And Peter said to Jesus, Lord it is good that we are here, if you wish
25:06
I will make three tents here, one for you, one for Moses, one for Elijah. He was still speaking when behold a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, this is my beloved son with whom
25:18
I am well pleased, listen to him. When the disciples heard this they fell on their faces and they were terrified, but Jesus came and touched them saying, rise and have no fear.
25:29
And when they lifted up their eyes they saw no one but Jesus only. And as they were coming down the mountain
25:34
Jesus commanded them, tell no one the vision until the Son of Man is raised from the dead. This is the gospel of the
25:41
Lord. You may be seated.
28:55
Grace, mercy, and peace to you from God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. You may be seated. In the name of Jesus, light and darkness.
29:05
We know the distinction, they're often used as metaphors for truth and lies.
29:11
You'll note that we who are deceived are described as, well, sitting in the darkness.
29:18
And we always say regarding somebody who's been deceived, they'll say, well, I didn't know I was in the dark regarding those things, right?
29:25
So we understand how light and darkness works. But you're going to note something, and that is this, is that God is hiding.
29:33
And I mean that. I mean, have any of you seen him? I haven't seen him. How tall is
29:39
Jesus, by the way? What shade of brown is his hair? What color are his eyes?
29:45
Does he have muscular biceps like me? I mean, what do we know about Christ? Y 'all have not seen him.
29:52
So that's important to note also as we're kind of working some things out in this text, because, boy, there is a lot to work out in this text.
29:59
You'll note that in Scripture, in the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus says words like this in chapter 6.
30:06
When you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces so that their fasting may be seen by others.
30:14
By the way, as we're coming up to Lent, this is a good thing to hear, right? So if you decide you're going to fast during the
30:20
Lenten season, don't go around going, what's wrong with you?
30:26
Well, I'm fasting. Oh, okay. Christ says, truly, I say to you, they've already received their reward.
30:33
But when you fast, anoint your head, wash your face, that your fasting may not be seen by others, but by your
30:38
Father, and listen to the words, who is in secret. And your
30:45
Father who sees in secret will reward you. So you'll note that God, well, he's in secret.
30:50
Luther likes to describe God as working in the world through different masks.
30:56
It's kind of an interesting way of putting it. But you'll note that something is going on here in our text where Jesus, the mask, comes off for just a little bit.
31:04
That's kind of the big part of our text, is that Jesus' mask comes off and we get to see
31:10
God. And you'll note it's all punctuated by light. So in our
31:16
Old Testament text, we saw that Moses, when he went up to Mount Sinai, he received from God the covenant.
31:22
He comes down with the two tablets, the Ten Commandments. This is why we talk about the two tables of the law, one table regarding God, the other table regarding human beings.
31:31
It's a convenient way to talk about this. You'll note he comes down from the mountain and his face is glowing.
31:39
But here's the thing, Moses' face is glowing, not because he is the sun, but more like kind of a lunar kind of glowing.
31:48
There's an afterglow. There's a reflected light of the glory of God because he's met with God face to face.
31:54
And as a result of it, the people there got to see for a second light that they hadn't seen before.
32:01
And God being in secret, hiding, isn't hiding so much at the moment, right?
32:06
That's kind of the point of what's going on at Mount Sinai. But you'll note that Moses, when he comes down from the mountain, he has the law.
32:15
And the law is not one of these things that can save you. It can't save me. It can't save you.
32:21
In fact, the law is, well, if I can use a, let me use a metaphor that may not hit well with some people.
32:29
Unfortunately, that's how this works. But if you've seen the Harry Potter movies or if you've read the books, there's a thing called a howler, all right?
32:38
So those poor students at Hogwarts, when their mom or dad wants to chew them out and really give it to them, they send a howler.
32:45
And in the voice of their parents, they get chewed out by their parents in front of all of their school buddies and friends.
32:52
And it's just a horrible experience. I would note that the the law of God oftentimes behaves like a howler, but the thing never turns off.
33:01
And so when the law looks at you, you go, SINNER! SINNER! SINNER! Quiet!
33:07
No! You're a sinner! You're guilty! How do you silence the law, right?
33:13
And so here in 2nd Corinthians, talking about this very text that we looked at in Exodus, it says the ministry of death, that's what the law does.
33:26
It kills us. So that God can make us alive in Christ, by the way. It's an important function of the law.
33:32
But that doesn't mean the law is bad. No, the law is holy. The law is good. The problem is, we are not.
33:39
So the ministry of death, carved in letters on stone, came with such glory that the
33:44
Israelites could not gaze at Moses's face because of its glory. And then note the words, which was being brought to an end.
33:53
The glory being brought to an end? Yeah, see, part of the reason why Moses put the veil on his face is, number one, well, we know people were freaked out, so he had to hide his face.
34:02
But the other reason why is because he didn't want people to know that the glory was fading until it had recharged after he had gone and met with God again.
34:11
Then Paul notes, for if there was glory in the ministry of condemnation, and indeed the law condemns all of us, the ministry of righteousness must far exceed it in glory.
34:19
Indeed, in this case, what once had glory has come to have no glory at all because of the glory that surpasses the glory of Christ, the glory of the gospel, the glory of the new covenant, the glory of the announcement that we are forgiven and pardoned in Christ, all by grace through faith, because of God's great love for us.
34:39
For if what was being brought to an end came with glory, how much more will what is permanent have glory?
34:44
Great questions the Apostle Paul points out. So that glory helps us out a little bit here. But you'll note that Moses, who brought down the
34:52
Ten Commandments, who gave the law, was he allowed to lead the people of Israel into the
34:58
Promised Land? No. What happened to Moses?
35:04
Well, funny thing happened on the way to the Promised Land, and that is that Moses disobeyed the voice of God, and God's law rightly condemned him as well.
35:15
We read in the book of Numbers, chapter 20, it says this,
35:26
This is the second time this happened, and against Aaron, and the people quarreled with Moses and said,
35:52
There is no water to drink. This will be very much akin to the text we'll hear next week.
35:58
So then Moses and Aaron went from the presence of the assembly to the entrance of the tent of meeting, and they fell on their faces, and then the glory of the
36:05
Lord appeared to them. Here we go again, glory showing up. And they fell on their faces, and Yahweh spoke to Moses, said,
36:22
Speak to the rock. Now, we will learn next week, because this is the readings for next week, that Moses, the first time that this kind of happened, that he was told by God to strike the rock.
36:36
And you'll note that the Apostle Paul, in 2nd Corinthians, makes it clear, 1st
36:42
Corinthians 10, that the rock itself is Christ. So Christ can only be struck once.
36:48
But Moses isn't listening very carefully to God. God said, You tell the rock to give its water, and it will give its water.
36:54
You go and you speak to the rock. The rock is Christ, right? So shall you bring water out of the rock for them, and give them drink to the congregation and their cattle.
37:04
So Moses took the staff from before Yahweh, as he commanded him. And then Moses and Aaron gathered the assembly together before the rock.
37:12
And he said to them, Hear now, you rebels. Shall we bring water out for you out of this rock?
37:18
And then Moses lifted up his hand, and he struck the rock with his staff.
37:25
Not once, twice. And you can hear the awkward silence.
37:31
Uh -oh, something's wrong here. And so the water came out abundantly, the congregation drank, and their livestock.
37:36
And then Yahweh said to Moses and Aaron, Because you did not believe in me, and uphold me as holy in the eyes of the people of Israel, therefore you shall not bring this assembly into the land that I had given them.
37:49
Fatal error on his part, which means Moses is going to be forbidden to enter the
37:55
Promised Land. In fact, when we get to Deuteronomy 34, which records the death of Moses for us, it says these words,
38:02
Then Moses went up from the plains of Moab to Mount Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, which is opposite of Jericho.
38:09
And Yahweh showed him all the land, Gilead as far as Dan, all of Naphtali, and the land of Ephraim, and Manasseh, all the land of Judah as far as the
38:18
Western Sea, and the Negev, and the plain that is the valley of Jericho, the city, the palm trees as far as Zoar.
38:25
And so you'll note, God gives him like a highlight reel, like one of those travelogue things. Let me show you what you didn't get to see, right?
38:32
That's a little painful, right? So God shows him the Promised Land, so he at least gets some kind of a glimpse there.
38:38
He's not allowed to lead the people of Israel into it, and he says, This is the land that I swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.
38:46
I will give it to your offspring. I have let you see it with your eyes, but you shall not go over there.
38:53
So Moses, the servant of Yahweh, died there in the land of Moab, according to the word of Yahweh.
39:00
Here's what you didn't get to see, and then he dies. And then he's buried, and we have no idea where Moses is buried.
39:06
God buried him so there would be no memorial to him. So you'll note, the lawgiver is condemned by the law.
39:14
Who brought the children of Israel, the children of Israel, in Exodus? Who brought them into the
39:20
Promised Land? It was Yeshua, Joshua, who happens to have the exact same name as Jesus.
39:28
Just keep that in mind, that's Jesus' Hebrew name. All of this is a little bit of background story as we get into our gospel text.
39:36
So when we look at our gospel text, we can kind of start to figure out some of the things that are going on here.
39:42
It says, After six days, Jesus took with him Peter, James, and John, his brother.
39:48
Now a little bit of a note here. The Gospel of Matthew is written in such a way that you're always the 13th disciple.
39:56
It's weird. This is one of those texts that breaks the fourth wall constantly. And so you'll note, you and I, we are along for this ride.
40:08
We are eyewitnesses of it with our ears, and eyewitnesses by reading it out.
40:14
But we're kind of like fourth disciples sitting there. Why Peter, James, and John? Well, you'll note that in the
40:20
Old Testament, in order to establish a fact, you had to have at least two to three witnesses.
40:25
Jesus was always good in that regard. He always brought the higher number. He always brought three.
40:31
And you'll note in your context here, Peter, James, and John have already seen Jesus raise
40:37
Jarius's daughter from the dead, the 12 -year -old girl who had died. And so he's the one, he said to her,
40:44
Talitha Kumi, and you know, the little girl I tell you will rise. And they are all witnesses of this. So he led them up a high mountain by themselves.
40:53
And you can already tell, if you know your Old Testament, something big is going to happen here.
40:58
And I mean really big. Big important things happen on high mountains. It invokes Mount Sinai.
41:04
And so that's what's going on here. And then all of a sudden, before their eyes he was transfigured, and his face shone like the sun.
41:14
His clothes became white as light. And so this then is kind of the big revealing.
41:22
Christ decides to kind of take the mask off for a minute. And we can see exactly who he is.
41:31
In Psalm 104, it says these wonderful words, starting at verse 1,
41:37
Bless Yahweh, O my soul. O Yahweh my God, you are very great.
41:43
You are clothed with splendor and majesty, covering yourself with light as with a garment, stretching out the heavens like a tent.
41:53
Ah, that's right. God clothes himself with light as a garment. And this then shows us who
41:59
Jesus is. Do you have doubts that Jesus is God in human flesh?
42:05
Well, you'll note that Jesus, he legitimately shines, whereas Moses had to reflect the glory of God.
42:11
Christ, he shows his glory and we see exactly who he is. For a moment we get a glimpse of the eternal
42:18
Son of God, and it's hard to make the features out. And then it says this, and behold, there appeared to them
42:25
Moses and Elijah talking with him. Now stop for a second here. Moses was not allowed to enter the
42:32
Promised Land. Moses is now in the Promised Land. And it took the church fathers to help me see this fact.
42:42
And it's beautiful when you think about it. It's absolutely beautiful, because the law forbade
42:49
Moses to lead the children of Israel into the Promised Land because he stood condemned, like so many of the people who fell in the wilderness.
42:57
And he did, in fact, he did fall in the wilderness, one of the last to fall. But that being the case here,
43:04
Moses is now in the Promised Land, in a high mountain in the Promised Land, in the very presence and glory of Christ.
43:11
This is the terminus of the exodus. This shows that there is forgiveness, mercy, and grace in Jesus Christ, because Jesus has led now him into the
43:21
Promised Land. And rather than Moses talking to his servant, Yeshua, he is instead talking to his
43:30
Lord, Yeshua. And we learn from the Gospel of Luke that what they are conversing about, what they are discussing,
43:37
Moses and Elijah, is Jesus' exodus. You see, Jesus is the true
43:43
Moses, if you would. Each and every one of us were born in slavery, born enslaved to sin, enslaved to the devil, enslaved to our sinful passions, enslaved to the world under the dominion of darkness.
43:58
Having been deceived by the serpent in the Garden of Eden, we have been paying the penalties and cost of our sin ever since.
44:09
It comes to us in sin, in misery, broken lives of people who suffer greatly and die.
44:18
And not only die in this world, but also die eternally, perishing in the flames of hell. Deceived, indeed, we are.
44:26
But see here, the light has come out. The mask has come off. We see Jesus for who he really is.
44:33
And we also see a stunning thing. Moses is there. Elijah is there.
44:41
Moses is finally able to be brought into the Promised Land, which tells us that in Christ, we are being led by him to the real
44:49
Promised Land. And that though God's law condemn each of us and condemn us rightly, there is forgiveness, mercy, and grace in Christ.
45:00
And you'll also notice that Moses and Elijah, they serve a very important function in the Old Testament.
45:05
Moses is the great lawgiver, the one who gave us the first five books of the Bible. Elijah is a representative of the prophets.
45:13
In fact, he's the great miracle working prophet of the Old Testament, one of two. And he stands, then, together between the two of them.
45:23
They are representatives of the entire Old Testament. But I would note, then,
45:29
Christ choosing Peter, James, and John also to be there was very important because they are representatives of the men who will write the
45:36
New Testament. And so you'll see, then, that these representatives of all of the scriptures, all of the
45:44
Bible, are there. And what are they testifying to? Who are they testifying about?
45:49
They are all pointing us to Jesus. So Peter, you gotta love
45:55
Peter, he blurts out something good and then something kind of stupid.
46:01
He blurts out, Lord, it is good that we are here. True, it's absolutely true.
46:06
It is great that they are there. Christ intended them to be there. He wanted them to see his light, to see his glory.
46:16
He wanted them to see him with his mask off so that they can see him as he truly is.
46:22
And that's what they got to see. But then Peter says something really boneheaded.
46:28
I mean, really boneheaded. He says, if you wish, I will make three tents here.
46:36
One for you, one for Moses, one for Elijah. Now, we all hear this and we think, well, that's kind of lame.
46:45
I mean, it kind of invokes the Jewish Feast of Sukkot, the
46:50
Feast of Booths. But here's the issue. Church Fathers help me out on this one as well.
46:56
Here's the issue. Peter is making Jesus equal with Moses and Elijah, and that ain't going to work.
47:07
That ain't going to work because Moses and Elijah are there as glorified human beings, creatures, important ones for sure, but they are not on the same level as Jesus Christ.
47:22
He is God of God, light of light, very God of very God, begotten, not made.
47:28
And so putting him on the same level with Moses and Elijah, it's an easy mistake to make, but it is a mistake nonetheless.
47:38
And so God the Father at this point decides that he's going to intervene, and he's swift to do so.
47:47
While he was still speaking, then behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them.
47:53
And a voice from the cloud said, this is my beloved Son with whom I am well -pleased.
47:58
You listen to him. Listen to him. Listen to the voice of the
48:04
Father. This invokes another prophecy. Prophecy from Deuteronomy 18 where Moses prophesied that God would raise up a prophet like him from among the children of Israel, and to him you must listen.
48:17
That's the fulfillment. Moses prophesied about Christ, and now the Heavenly Father speaks from a cloud of glory, glory upon glory, and says, this is my beloved
48:27
Son. I am well -pleased. Hearkening back to Jesus' baptism, you listen to him.
48:34
Listen to him. It is all about him. And you'll note then at this point,
48:40
Moses and Elijah just disappear, and there is only
48:49
Jesus at this point. That is not a detail that you can throw away either.
48:57
The point is this, is that Moses and Elijah testify of Christ. They are not on the same level as he is, and we are to listen to him.
49:05
Moses and Elijah point us to Jesus. The Old Testament points us to Christ, but everything is about him.
49:12
And when Jesus, when they disappear, there is only Jesus, because it was always about him and only about him from the very beginning of the scriptures.
49:21
When you read yourself into the biblical text, and you say nonsensical things like,
49:26
I'm going to go and slay my Goliaths, and bizarre things like that, and you make the Bible about yourself, and you say, you know, one of the weird, stupid prophecies
49:35
I heard recently from these wingnut wackerdoodles is they're saying, God is telling us that we need to go and build our own
49:41
Goshen. Oh, give me a break. Okay, I don't live anywhere near Egypt. That's just nonsense.
49:46
You're reading yourself into the text. It's all about Christ. But you'll note then that when
49:54
Moses and Elijah disappear, Christ puts the mask back on.
50:00
The light is hidden again. But when Jesus then comes to his terrified disciples, and indeed they were terrified hearing the voice of the
50:09
Father, they fell on their faces, and they were shaking in their sandals. And Jesus comes, and he touches them, and he says, rise and have no fear.
50:20
Listen to Jesus. I know that God's law rightly condemns each and every one of us, and that it says that we have rightly deserved
50:29
God's condemnation, and we have all earned the fires of hell by our participation in the wickedness and evil of Satan, and this world, and our own sinful flesh.
50:39
But Christ tells us to rise and have no fear, and the reason for that is that Christ in his exodus, he takes us through death to life, and he led the way by being crucified for your sins and mine, and now he is leading us through death to life, and we will be with him.
51:00
So rise and have no fear. Do not fear the condemnation of the law. Do not fear its fierce voice which rightly accuses you.
51:09
Do not fear it. Trust Christ. Only listen to him. He has forgiven you of all of your sins, and so listening to Jesus, they lifted up their eyes, and they saw no one but Jesus only.
51:24
Decades later, the Apostle Peter, writing his last epistle, the one that he wrote very shortly before he was crucified for his confession of faith in Christ, for being an eyewitness to the resurrection of Jesus and to his glory, he now points us to where this hidden light is, and it's not in seeking glorious encounters with God like they had on the
51:55
Mount of Transfiguration. God's light is hidden now again. He's continuing to wear a mask, but Peter points us to where that light is hidden.
52:06
It says in our epistle text, we did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and the coming of our
52:13
Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. For when he received honor and glory from God the
52:20
Father, and the voice was borne to him by the majestic glory that said, this is my beloved
52:26
Son with whom I am well pleased, we ourselves, we heard this very voice born from heaven, for we were with him on the holy mountain.
52:36
And we have something more sure, more fully confirmed.
52:43
The prophetic word to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.
52:56
You see, the light of Christ is found in your Bible. And you'll note that old analog paper
53:02
Bible sitting on our table or maybe on our nightstand, it doesn't glow.
53:07
I never use its light to keep me from stubbing my foot or my toe on something at night.
53:14
But what Peter is saying here is that that hidden light that only appears and shows us what's really going on so few times in the scripture.
53:24
In the Old Testament at Mount Sinai, in the New Testament on the Mount of Transfiguration, that very light of God showing us what is true and what we are to study.
53:37
And the difference is, compared to the lies that we've been taught, it is the scriptures that we find that hidden light.
53:45
And so he says you will do well to pay attention to the scriptures as a lamp shining in a dark place until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.
53:54
You know, this hearkens then to that third commandment. The third commandment we Lutherans recognize is what?
54:01
Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. And when Luther asked the question, basistas, what does this mean?
54:07
He answers very, very simply. That we should fear and love God so that we do not despise preaching
54:14
God's word, but hold it sacred and gladly hear and learn it.
54:20
So many places today that call themselves Christian churches do not preach the word of God.
54:27
They, in fact, they're loath to do so. I remember over and over again when
54:33
I was actively pointing out the errors of the purpose -driven church.
54:39
I even pointed this out to Rick Warren to his face in a conversation that I had with him. And that was is that they are abandoning the preaching of the scriptures.
54:49
Rick Warren legitimately taught that if you want to have a church that grows and that is appealing to unbelievers, you've got to stop exegeting long passages of scripture because the unbeliever is not interested in the
55:03
Bible. And when I asked him, I said, well where are they supposed to go? He says, well we still have a believer's service on Wednesday night.
55:12
The believers can come on Wednesday, but the unbelievers get to have the church service on Sunday.
55:17
It makes no sense when you think about it. And all that does is teach a despising of God's word. Funny though, shortly after that conversation,
55:26
Saddleback Church ended their believers services on Wednesday nights. They don't exist anymore. The only thing that exists is the unbelievers service where you get a smattering of God's word, a few verses out of context here and there.
55:39
And I cannot even begin to tell you how many times I've heard people say to me that in one service at Kongsvinger, they've heard more
55:47
Bible in one service than they have heard in a year in a large big box megachurch.
55:54
It's sad when you think about it because here the scriptures point us to where the light is.
55:59
The light is in the scriptures. The job of a pastor is to preach the word and in preaching the word he must preach
56:07
Christ. Moses preached Christ. Elijah preached Christ. Peter, James, and John, they preached
56:14
Christ. Who am I to preach anything different than Him? As the voice of the Father said, listen to Him and there was only
56:22
Jesus after that. In fact, that's the whole point. There is only Jesus. So we must hear these words and recognize that because of our sinful nature we have constantly the battle of being inattentive to God's word.
56:40
To not hearing it, to not reading it, to not marking it, to not inwardly digesting it.
56:46
Instead, to basically not listen to it much at all. To be inattentive.
56:53
That is the natural way in which our sinful nature behaves. But we must listen to the voice of the
56:59
Father who tells us to listen to Jesus. His voice is in the scripture and that is where the light is.
57:05
Do you want to know the difference between truth and error? Between truth and lies?
57:11
Between the dominion of darkness and the and the kingdom of light? That is all in the scriptures.
57:17
God's voice is there to help us. There to give us true light as a lamp to our feet so that we do not stumble on the rocks and fall to our peril in the fires of hell.
57:31
So rise, have no fear, but listen to Jesus only. His light now is hidden in the scriptures and nowhere else.
57:39
In the name of Jesus, amen. We rise to confess our faith together in the words of the
57:45
Nicene Creed. I believe in one
58:03
God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible, and in one
58:11
Lord Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of God, begotten of his Father before all worlds,
58:17
God of God, light of light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the
58:25
Father by whom all things were made, who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the
58:35
Holy Spirit of the Virgin Mary and was made man and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate.
58:42
He suffered and was buried and the third day he rose again according to the scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the
58:51
Father and he will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end.
58:58
And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the
59:04
Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets.
59:10
And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic church. I acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come.
59:22
Amen. In peace let us pray to the
59:40
Lord that the eyes of all people would be opened to see the glory of God in the face of Christ.
59:48
Let us pray to the Lord. For the children of God that our Father would give us ears to hear his
59:55
Son as he speaks to us through his Holy Word and the sacraments and faith to believe that he delivers forgiveness, life, and salvation to us through the same.
01:00:03
Let us pray to the Lord. For pastors and servants in the church that all their preaching and teaching would flow from the right understanding that all scripture testifies of Christ and his work for our eternal salvation.
01:00:18
Let us pray to the Lord. For families that parents would teach the faith to their children and that the forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed in all households.
01:00:28
And for all expectant mothers that they and their babies would be kept healthy throughout their pregnancies.
01:00:34
Let us pray to the Lord. For the nations that injustice and oppression would come to an end and all who would share in the goodness of creation for our soldiers and those who serve in our armed forces that God would watch over them.
01:00:48
Let us pray to the Lord. We pray for those in need. We especially remember
01:00:54
Elizabeth, Jeremy, Alan, Debbie, Paul, Carrie, Becky, Jim, Steve, Christopher, Sheila, Ron, Melba, Bill, Michael, Cameron, Troy, Jim, Chloe, Ellen, Brooks, Gary, Natalie, Deb, Taryn, Candy, Todd, Bonnie, Brent, Roger, Kevin, Mark, Jeff, Joan, Sarah, Jessica, Josh, Ryan, Tim, Lori, Mike, Shirley, and Carol.

01:02:04
And we also lift up before you those who mourn the loss of loved ones. We ask
01:02:09
God that you would grant them relief and comfort through the promise of eternal glory with Christ. Let us pray to the
01:02:15
Lord. For all who eat and drink Christ's body and blood, that God would grant them repentant hearts to receive forgiveness in this sacrament, and strengthen them in faith toward God and in fervent love toward one another.
01:02:27
Let us pray to the Lord. Holy Father, we give you thanks for Moses, Elijah, Peter, James, and John, and all who have fallen asleep trusting in your promises.
01:02:38
Keep us in this faith by your Spirit, and bring us with your saints to behold the fullness of Christ's glory in his kingdom, which has no end.
01:02:46
Through the same Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you in the Holy Spirit, one
01:02:51
God, now and forever. We continue with the offertory.
