00:30: By purpose, we are first biblical, but we can also be controversial. Stay tuned for the next 25 minutes as we�re called by the divine trumpet to summon the troops for the honor and glory of her
00:41: King. Here�s our host, Pastor Mike Abendroth. Well, we have been growing, dear church.
00:47: Lots of new people coming, and you might ask yourself the question, �Why are new people coming ?� And maybe there are several reasons for that.
00:54: One is we are open for worship services, and so people come because some churches are closed.
00:59: I think that�s legitimate. But I think another reason why people are coming to the church is the churches that they are leaving continue to give them a dose of, a regular dose of, and only a dose of, more law.
01:15: I could explain it this way. Driving down the 495 the other day, traffic is kind of back to pre -COVID traffic, and they have a little thing on the side of the freeway there on the side of 95, 495.
01:28: How do you say it again? Can I say that 495? I can say it. I like definite articles on the side of 495, and they have some place that you can go for a little sabbatical.
01:40: What do they call those things? Rest stop. And you know what I like to do at rest stops? I like to go to the rest stops and then pay the money to sit in the
01:48: IndyCar simulator to drive for another hour. Remember when I was in high school and I was taking driver's ed classes, and I had to go to the simulator, and you would be driving this old car, and there would be a dog that would run across, and we'd have to slam on the brakes, but not too hard.
02:04: I mean, nobody drives for hour upon hour after hour, goes to the rest stop, and then wants to drive more.
02:11: And all week long, we are bombarded with to do things, and to accomplish things, and to achieve things.
02:18: And the last thing Christians need on a Sunday morning is to be told this, drive more, drive faster, drive harder, do more.
02:27: That's the last thing Christians need. Christians, of course, can be told to do things, that's certain, but not at the expense of preaching the person and work of the
02:37: Lord Jesus. Do you know why I think people are coming to this church? Because they're tired of driving harder and faster, to only go on a
02:45: Sunday rest day, to be told, you need to be doing more. So if you take your
02:52: Bibles, please, and turn to 2 Peter chapter 1, we are going to make sure we get a good, long look at the
02:58: Lord Jesus Christ, so that because of gratitude, because of glorifying Him, because of, it's the right thing to do, then we can size up false teachers.
03:07: There's nothing wrong with doing things in light of gratitude, but there's everything wrong with doing things when there's no focus on the object of our faith, the
03:16: Lord Jesus Christ. I'm quite certain that people could go to church, week in and week out, and hardly ever hear about the wonderful person and work of the
03:26: Lord Jesus. You're adopted, dear Christian, into the family of God. God accepts you in the beloved. You're forgiven.
03:32: You're justified. God's not at war with you anymore. You're reconciled, and you say, well, if you talk that way, people might take advantage of that.
03:40: Well, they might, they shouldn't, but this is the way we talk to Christians. If you're not a Christian, of course, you're not adopted.
03:47: You're a father of Satan, but for Christians, as we come together to worship, you need to be reminded of the person and work of the gracious and merciful
03:55: Lord Jesus Christ, and I think that's why BBC is growing. Now, chapter 2 is where we are in 2
04:03: Peter, and if you're new to the church, we're going verse by verse through books of the Bible so that you might get to know them for yourself.
04:09: It would be wrong if you went home today and said, I got everything out of that myself. Before the sermon, the pastor didn't help me understand context and flow or anything like that.
04:18: I want you to understand this for yourself, and you have paid my bills this week so I could study to preach to you.
04:26: And 2 Peter 2 is all about false teachers, but to remind you of the Lord Jesus so that you continue to rest in Him, even though there's a world full of false teachers.
04:36: I want to reconstruct to you the person and work of Jesus from chapter 1 alone. Maybe I could put it this way.
04:42: If you had no other chapters in all the Bible but 2 Peter 1, what could you learn about Jesus? Is there enough in here about Jesus?
04:50: I mean, why did not Peter just say chapter 2 verse 1 is the start of the book? False prophets also arose among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you who will secretly bring in destructive heresies.
05:02: Why didn't he start there? Why chapter 1? Why does it exist? What could you learn about Jesus Christ pulling off on that rest stop of a busy week to be encouraged, to be refreshed, not to do more, not to just accomplish more, not to achieve more, but to remind us who
05:19: Jesus is so that we can survey the landscape through the lens of a risen Savior.
05:25: What could you learn about Jesus so that we might be prepared for chapter 2 and the onslaught of the false teachers that exist, maybe even in this church, certainly in evangelicalism?
05:38: Well, it could start off in chapter 1 verse 1. What could I learn about Jesus? He's called Jesus Christ. Christ means Messiah. All the
05:45: Old Testament promises of this anointed King who would rule, all the Davidic promises are found in Jesus Christ.
05:52: He is in fact the Messiah. He actually sends people to tell us about Him.
05:59: See that in verse 1, an apostle of Jesus Christ. We could learn in chapter 1, if that's the only book of the
06:05: Bible we had, the only chapter we had, God wants us to know. He reveals Himself, not just in nature, but also specifically in Scripture that He sends people to teach us about Himself.
06:16: We could also learn this about Jesus, to those who have obtained a faith of equal standing, chapter 1 verse 1.
06:24: Here's what that means. By sovereign will, by the free will of God, He gives
06:29: Christians faith. He gives an unbeliever faith and they become a
06:35: Christian. It's sovereign. You could learn that God is sovereign when it comes to election and sovereign when it comes to who goes to His holy heaven.
06:44: What if you only had 2 Peter 1 to learn about Jesus? What else could you learn? Verse 1, by the righteousness of our
06:52: God and Savior Jesus Christ. You could learn this, dear Christian, that God, the righteous
06:58: God, expects righteous living to get into heaven. No unrighteousness. Well, we're unrighteous and we've sinned and so we need a righteousness earned by another.
07:07: We could learn that Jesus, the God -man, was under the law of God and He kept the law, not for Himself but for us, so that now we stand before God as completely righteous.
07:19: What else could we learn? Verse 2, Jesus is gracious and He gives peace.
07:25: Jesus, of course, is grace incarnate. And when you think about grace, don't think of substances, don't think about gas and you're driving down the freeway and you run out of gas and you need a little more grace.
07:35: It is Jesus incarnate. You would know that, especially if you're a Christian, God has been gracious to you.
07:40: He's been merciful to you. He also not only saves you, but verse 3, what could you learn about Jesus?
07:48: It's His divine power that is granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness.
07:56: You could learn about Jesus that He not only saves, but He sanctifies. He not only justifies and counts you as righteous based on the work of Jesus, but He also says,
08:06: I'm just not going to leave you where you were. I'm going to help you live a holy life, the power of the Spirit of God.
08:12: You could learn that Jesus knows the future because He said in verses 12 and following to Peter, this is how you're going to die and you are going to die.
08:21: We could learn in verse 14 that He's the Lord. We could learn in verses 16 and following that He is the majestic glory and in the triune nature of God, the
08:32: Father says to the Son, this is my beloved Son. It is good and right for us to get a good long view of who
08:40: Jesus is before we deal with the assault of the false teachers. Does this strike a chord with you?
08:49: A woman named Martha welcomed him into her house, welcomed Jesus, and she had a sister called
08:54: Mary who sat at the Lord's feet and listened to his teaching. But Martha was distracted with much serving and she went up to him and said,
09:01: Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me. The Lord answered her.
09:09: What did he say to her? Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary.
09:17: Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her. That's so good to be reminded that the ultimate worship is not doing.
09:26: We will do in light of God's graciousness to us, but to sit at the Lord's feet and to remember if that's not on Sunday morning service, you're at the wrong service because all week it's law, law, law, law.
09:39: Guess what? Inside your heart, law, law, law, law with conscience. I would like to be reminded of the person and work of the
09:46: Lord Jesus. And Peter knows that he might have denied Jesus once, twice, three times, but he will not deny him again.
09:52: And before Peter attacks any problem, before you attack any problem, I'm anxious. I'm fearful.
09:58: There's relationship problems. Something's going on at work. You have to do it through the lens of the person and work of Jesus Christ, because what you don't need is for me to say, do more.
10:08: I could say in light of who Jesus is, this is what you should do, but do more is the wrong way to go about it.
10:15: And of course, after we learn about the Lord Jesus and are reminded about him, we have to deal with this issue of false teachers.
10:22: I wish they didn't exist, but since Jesus, the true teacher exists, there will be false teachers.
10:29: And what you might be saying is, you know what the false teachers, they've got lyric jets. They've got compact centers.
10:36: They've got all kinds of money. They got nice suits, $20 ,000 watches.
10:42: There's even a thing called pastor sneakers now online where the pastors are wearing five, 10, $15 ,000 sneakers on a
10:50: Sunday morning. I just want you to know Marshall's 59 bucks.
10:57: They're not sneakers either. I didn't do that for a service.
11:06: Take that out of the video. If Jesus is the way, the truth, the life, if every one of you, in fact, you will die and stand before God, a holy
11:16: God, a righteous God, you're going to need to be rescued. You're going to need a savior.
11:22: You're going to need somebody who lived the life you should have lived, who died for the sins that you committed and conquered death.
11:31: You're going to need that. And so I love second Peter because it's a good template for all of us.
11:36: Just can't walk into life saying, you know what? Don't be anxious. Don't be anxious. Don't be anxious. I just have to try not to be anxious.
11:43: And this, that, and the other, whatever particular issue you're working on are through, it needs to be through the lens of the person and the work of the
11:50: Lord Jesus. Will these people be judged though?
11:55: Verse three of chapter two, their condemnation from long ago is not idle and their destruction is not asleep.
12:01: They have nice clothes. They have nice cars. They have nice mansions. And you know what? Maybe God is asleep at the judgment wheel.
12:09: I mean, maybe he forgot. I mean, it's kind of hard to run the universe, I would imagine. And kind of busy, lots of things going on in Israel now and other places.
12:16: And he's like, well, you know, I'll get to the false teachers when I get to them. Verse four though reminds us
12:24: God doesn't fall asleep when it comes to judgment. When angels sinned, what happened?
12:31: Cast into hell. When everybody on the world except Noah and his seven family members, what happened there?
12:39: He didn't spare them. The worldwide flood on the ungodly. What about a Sodom and Gomorrah with the exception of lot and some family members all condemned to extinction?
12:51: God is not asleep at the judgment wheel. And so we get a good picture of who Jesus is and what he's done and how we can rest in him and trust in him and be empowered by his spirit.
13:01: And now we size up false teachers and we see what they do. And we say to ourselves, okay, they're going to get it.
13:06: We can rest in that. We can make sure we don't have to worry about false teachers.
13:16: They're bad role models. Don't follow them. And so today we come to our passage versus 14
13:23: B through 22. We made it all the way through verse 22 at the first service. And I think we can make it through on this service as well.
13:31: We're going to look at versus 14 B through 22. And I'm going to give you seven knows for an outline and O not
13:38: N O S E seven knows so that you say no to false teachers. He said, they're going to sneak in there.
13:45: They're like, you know, to catch a smuggler, to catch a drug smuggler, people try to bring in cocaine in, in they make pallets of cocaine.
13:54: They put it in boa constrictors. They swallow it. They sneak into places. They sneak the drugs into places and false teachers sneak into churches too.
14:05: But here we're going to see the effects of false teaching so that you say,
14:11: I don't want to do that. You know, I was reading this book about false teachers and my friend is reading a book about false teachers and I written by false teacher rather.
14:18: And I think I need to warn them seven knows when it comes to say no to false teachers.
14:25: So you, you, you know, what's behind the scenes, these false teachers that deny the Lord Jesus that say, he's not the only begotten son.
14:32: He's not begotten of the father before all words worlds. He's not God of God. He's not light of light.
14:38: He's not very God of very God. He's not begotten. He's made. He's not of one substance with the father.
14:46: He not for our salvation came down from heaven, was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the Virgin Mary and was made man.
14:52: He's not any of those. And especially the part we don't like as false teachers, he shall come again with glory to judge the quick and the dead.
15:00: We don't want the judgment part, by the way, who was the first person that ever denied judgment, the judgment of God.
15:08: These false teachers are like Satan. You surely won't die. You're not going to die. We need to be on high alert seven knows so that you say no to false teachers.
15:21: Number one, why should you say to know to a false teacher? They have no eternal perspective.
15:27: The first know is they have no eternal perspective. They're in it for today, eat, drink, and be merry for tomorrow.
15:33: We die. Get everything today. Look at verse 14 B. They have hearts trained in greed.
15:40: Second Peter chapter two, a cursed children forsaking the right way. They have gone astray.
15:46: It followed the way of Balaam, the son of Baylor who loved gain from wrongdoing, but was rebuked for his own transgression.
15:53: A speechless donkey spoke with human voice and restrained the prophets madness.
16:01: It would behoove all of us as Christians to remember that we are to have an eternal perspective.
16:07: There is a day that will die and meet God. There is a day that the Lord Jesus will come back.
16:12: And even in the Proverbs, the Proverbs teach us that the fool says only today, no tomorrow, no consequences, no forethought.
16:20: If I do this cause effect, what will happen? It's the wise person in the
16:27: Proverbs that says, if I do this, uh, there's a payday tomorrow.
16:33: There's a consequence. The next day, these false teachers have no eternal perspective.
16:38: So why would you listen to them? Look at what it says in verse 14. They have hearts trained in greed.
16:46: We get that word gymnasium from the word training. You ever go to the gym, the gymnasium and what do you do at the gym?
16:55: Well, you, you go to the latte bar. Of course is what you do. No, you train, you do reps, you do sets, you're working out, you're drinking protein drinks and creatine and other things.
17:07: That's the word here. Gymnasium. These false teachers, when it comes to greed, they work out, they plan, they do things that they're, they're active and they work out so much.
17:20: They pretty much have a PhD in greed. Their doctoral dissertation is how to extract money from Christians or so -called
17:28: Christians. Napoleon, the great theologian said, well, everybody's a theologian, right?
17:37: Either good or bad. Napoleon. I am surrounded by priests who repeat incessantly that their kingdom is not of this world and yet they lay hands on everything they can get.
17:52: I find it fascinating as a side note, probably less than five times in 25 years, we've talked about money from this pulpit or I have, how can the giving be above the budget?
18:03: Because if you show people the glories of Christ Jesus, you freely give, do you not? I don't have to harangue you for money and, and all the different reasons we need money and the, and the incessant barometers and everything that seemed to be shrinking and not growing.
18:17: No. On the other hand, they're in it for the money. We're filling pews.
18:22: It's nickels and noses. What does Peter say? And it is one of these, you better duck.
18:29: Accursed children. You heretic, you're going to be under the curse of God.
18:35: False teacher, you're in it for money. You're in it for, for now. No blessing for you. No shalom for you.
18:41: You're accursed children. You little brats, undisciplined, selfish children, no parents.
18:47: That's how you act except you're a false teacher. This is not benediction. Good word. This is malediction.
18:54: Bad word. Isaiah 57, children of destruction. Hosea 10, children of wrongdoing.
19:02: Ephesians two, you're familiar with it. Children of wrath. These are an accursed brood, accursed children.
19:10: Why would I want to kind of snuggle up to them? Now, if I did a word association and I said to you, think of an
19:17: Old Testament character. When I say greed, you say this person's name. And so let's do it.
19:23: Greed, Balaam. There you go. It's right in the text. It was not a trick question. I know every time
19:29: I ask you a question, you think it's a trick question. Balaam was greedy.
19:34: And Balaam said, you know what? I can extract money from the bad guys. So we get after Israel.
19:40: And here, the writer Peter, very familiar with the Old Testament, knows the example of greed by Balaam.
19:47: They like Balaam, verse 15, forsake the right way. They've gone astray. I mean, what do they do?
19:54: The right way is to teach the glories of Jesus. The right way is we're not going to try to extract money.
20:02: The right way is you're an under shepherd of the chief shepherd. The right way is you get out of the way as the preacher and you don't make it all for today.
20:09: What they did is they left the right way, the way, the truth and the life. Let's go off, not on the right way, not even just the wrong way, but the crooked way, the perverse way.
20:23: That's what they do. They're just full of greed and they're just like Balaam. You see it there following the way of Balaam.
20:31: He's not called son of Baor in the Old Testament, but that's a play on words. I believe the son of flesh.
20:38: He's so fleshly. He's the son of flesh. That's what he does. Who loved gain from wrongdoing.
20:45: He forsakes the right way, the straight way, the way a prophet should be preaching the
20:52: Lord Jesus, the Messiah. And he goes off on the crooked way. Now, if I said to you, where do you find
20:58: Balaam in the Old Testament? You of course would say numbers chapter what? 22.
21:05: Let's go there. Just let me quickly read to you Balaam. It's a count that Peter is referencing.
21:13: And what Peter's trying to do is say, do you know what? Don't be telling yourself they're nice. They're friendly.
21:19: They've got a few good nuggets in their teaching, false teachers. They don't have any eternal perspective to get her in it for money.
21:24: Don't give them your money. Balaam is found in numbers 22 for our point today.
21:35: He's a greedy false teacher, and God is going to use a donkey to rebuke him.
21:41: Now you might be saying to me, if you're visiting, I don't know how a donkey could talk English.
21:47: Well, he's not speaking English here. It's Hebrew. So that's one thing. But if God can create the universe by divine fiat world,
21:58: I think he could probably have a donkey talk. Don't you think so? If Jesus Christ can be raised from the dead, everything else just settles down.
22:06: Can God talk through a donkey? The answer is yes. Certainly the Lord Jesus would have said, Oh, I forgot all the
22:12: Old Testament is good and true and right and wholesome and God -breathed and authoritative and profitable, except the whole donkey thing, because that didn't really happen.
22:20: It's just a figment of somebody's imagination. No, the Lord Jesus affirms this in his prophetic ministry.
22:28: Numbers 22. Let me just read a few verses. So you know what's going on in Peter's mind as he equates greed with Balaam.
22:39: Numbers 22 verse 21. So Balaam rose in the morning, saddled his donkey and went with the princes of Moab, because he wants the
22:46: Moabites money. So he wants to curse Israel. But God's anger was kindled because he went and the angel of the
22:53: Lord took a stand in the way of his adversary as the way as his adversary rather. And he was riding the donkey and two servants were with him.
22:59: And the donkey saw the angel of the Lord standing in the road with a drawn sword in his hand. Donkey turned aside out of the road, went into the field.
23:08: Balaam struck the donkey to turn her into the road. Then the angel of the
23:13: Lord stood in a narrow path between the vineyards with a wall on either side. And when the donkey saw the angel of the
23:19: Lord, she pushed against the wall and pressed Balaam's foot against the wall. So he struck her again.
23:27: Verse 26. Then the angel of the Lord went ahead and stood in a narrow place where there was no way to turn either to the right or to the left.
23:33: When the donkey saw the angel of the Lord, she laid down under Balaam. Balaam's anger was kindled and he struck the donkey with his staff.
23:42: Then the Lord opened the mouth of the donkey and she said to Balaam, what have
23:50: I done to you that you have struck me these three times? Balaam said to the donkey, because you have made a fool of me.
23:57: I wish I had a sword in my hand for I would kill you. The donkey said to Balaam, am
24:02: I not your donkey on which you have ridden all your life long to this day? Is it my habit to treat you in this way? No.
24:09: Then the Lord opened the eyes of Balaam and he saw the angel of the Lord standing in the way with his drawn sword in his hand and he bowed down and fell on his face.
24:19: And the angel of the Lord said to him, why have you struck your donkey these three times? Behold, I have come out to oppose you because your way, sound familiar, is perverse before me.
24:30: The donkey saw me and turned aside because before me these three times, if she had not turned aside for me, surely now
24:36: I would have killed you and let her live. Then Balaam said to the angel of the
24:41: Lord, I have sinned for I did not know that you stood in the road against me. Now, therefore, if it is evil in your side,
24:47: I will turn back. It's a Judas -like repentance. Verse 35, and the angel of the
24:52: Lord said to Balaam, go with these men, but speak only the word I tell you. So Balaam went on with the princes of Balak.
24:59: Back to 2 Peter chapter 2. That's the passage that he's referring to that, of course, the
25:04: Old Testament saints knew well. Peter knew well. His only Bible was the Old Testament and whatever
25:10: Pauline writings he had that he made allusion to in chapter three. When you think of false teachers, you ought to be thinking to yourself, why would
25:19: I follow them? They have no eternal perspective. They're in it for the money. Positively, we are to have an eternal perspective.
25:26: Jesus said, do not store up for yourself treasures on earth where moths and vermin destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven where moths and vermin do not destroy and where thieves do not break in and steal.
25:42: For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. And the apostle sent by Jesus named
25:49: Paul, he said in 2 Corinthians 4, so we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.
26:02: It is a sign of a godly preacher following in the line of the Lord Jesus to talk about heaven often, the return of Christ often, and eternal realities.
26:13: Johnny Erickson Tata, the young lady jumped in the river head first and was paralyzed from the head down, wrote later in her book,
26:21: Heaven, Your Real Home. She said, when a Christian realizes his citizenship is in heaven, he begins acting as a responsible citizen of earth.
26:29: He invests wisely in relationships because he knows they're eternal. His conversations, goals, and motives become pure and honest because he realizes these will have a bearing on everlasting reward.
26:42: He gives generously of time, money, and talent because he's laying up treasure for eternity. He spreads the good news of Christ because he longs to fill heaven's ranks with his friends and neighbors.
26:54: All this serves the pilgrim well, not only in heaven, but on earth, for it serves everyone around him.
27:01: False teaching leads to ungodly living, and you want to just get everything now. Not only that, number two, the second no, why you should say no to false teachers.
27:12: They have no eternal perspective, number one, and now found in verse 17, there's no edification with them, no real maturity.
27:20: You'd like to grow, you'd like to mature, you'd like to say, I'd like to have a deeper appreciation for the things of the Lord Jesus.
27:25: I'd like to say no to that besetting sin more often. Yes, to serve other people in the Lord. Well, you're not going to get it listening to false teachers.
27:36: Any change in behavior will simply be behavior modification. It's not going to be real.
27:43: Verse 17, good metaphors for living in a dry, arid climate in the
27:49: Middle East. These teachers, false teachers, are waterless springs and mists driven by a storm.
28:02: Oh, can you imagine? I don't know, when's the thirstiest you've ever been? Maybe you're on a long bicycle ride, and you didn't bring enough water, and you thought the place was down the street, and sometimes
28:11: I've kind of run out of water, and I've almost want to ride up to people and say, could I have some water from your hose? Or maybe there's no places, and you're like,
28:18: I just want something to drink. Oh, there's that spring. There's that spring. I've walked across the peninsula, and I'm almost there, and there's a spring, and you go over there.
28:26: There's no water. That's like the false teacher. There's no real substance. It's an illusion.
28:33: It's a mirage. That's a lot different than when Jesus said to the woman at the well, everyone who drinks of this literal water will be thirsty again.
28:44: But whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will be in him a spring of water, welling up to eternal life.
28:54: And then three chapters later, our Lord Jesus said similarly, on the last day of the feast, the great day,
28:59: Jesus stood up and cried out, if anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the scripture said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.
29:12: You want no nourishment? You want no maturation? I think this is true, and for the most part,
29:17: I think our church is understanding false teachers. But if you've ever met somebody that's been a
29:23: Christian for 40 years, and they're super immature, this could be one of the reasons, because they just want to have themselves gutted with and glutted with false teaching.
29:34: It doesn't mature people. Waterless springs. He gives another metaphor, mists driven by a storm.
29:43: I mean, that's interesting, isn't it? They're waterless springs, or as Jude calls them, waterless clouds.
29:49: Here, just think of chaos. Just think of, okay, a mist. You got a storm and you got a mist.
29:55: What happens to a mist in a storm? I mean, confusion, instability, going all around, blowing around, whichever way, hither, thither, pell, mell, off it goes, in and out.
30:09: It's almost like, oh, I've got some kind of sin in my life, and I'd like relief. I'd like to even know that I'm forgiven, and I think
30:17: I can capture it. There's the mist of forgiveness, and I try to grab it, and it's gone.
30:23: That's the false teacher. Israel followed imposters like this.
30:29: Jeremiah 2, they've forsaken the Lord, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, cisterns that cannot hold water.
30:39: And regularly, even in Jeremiah, chapter 14, waterlessness is a sign of abandonment by God.
30:50: Like newborn infants, dear Christian, long for the pure milk of the word, that by it you may grow into salvation, if indeed you have tasted that the
31:01: Lord is good. And that's why when we learn the Bible, we learn everything in there, and you say, well, some of the parts
31:07: I don't like in the Bible. Well, join the club. You think, oh, look at these angles, and these sharp angles, and God's justice just shows you our mind.
31:17: We're finite, and we're sinful, and we can't explain it all, but it is our job to say, you know what, this is good for me, and I want to be taught all of it, and if it convicts me, great.
31:25: If it encourages me, great. I'm not going to pick and choose and cut and paste like false teachers do.
31:31: You know, it's like when the kids would say, you can make the Bible say anything you want. Go out and hang yourself.
31:41: What you do, do quickly. I mean, who wants to be following that kind of advice?
31:49: I'm thankful to be at a church, Bethlehem Bible Church, where you want the Bible. J .C.
31:54: Rowell said, you live in a world where your soul is in constant danger. Enemies are around you on every side. Your own heart is even deceitful.
32:01: Satan is laboring to lead you astray. False teachers, false doctrine abound. Be safe, so be well -armed.
32:09: Provide yourself the weapons which God has given for your help. You must store your mind with holy scripture.
32:16: Neglect your Bible, and nothing I know of can prevent you from error if a plausible advocate of false teaching shall happen to meet you.
32:27: You are the man that is unlikely to become established in the truth. I shall not be surprised,
32:34: Ryle said, to hear that you are troubled with doubts and questions about assurance, grace, faith, perseverance.
32:39: I shall not wonder if I am told that you have problems in your marriage, problems with your children, problems about the conduct of your family, and about the company you keep.
32:49: So instead, 2 Peter chapter 3, grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
32:57: Thirdly, why should you say no to false teachers? Because there are no reservations in heaven with them or for them.
33:05: No eternal perspective, no edification, no reservations in heaven. Why would I follow somebody that's going to hell?
33:13: Because they're going to take me with them. Verse 17b, for them the gloom of utter darkness has been reserved.
33:23: False teachers are going to go to hell, the very hell they deny, the second coming they deny, the judgment they deny, that's what's going to happen.
33:29: Why would you want to go on the bus with them? Get off that bus. Future judgment of the false teachers, they might deny it, they might mock, they might scoff, but it's reserved.
33:40: You see that? It's reserved. Loge seats reserved for them in hell.
33:46: You want to follow them? Yeah, but they're so nice. They've got so much. Reserve seats in the blackest darkness.
33:56: Jude 13, the parallel passage, the gloom of utter darkness has been reserved forever.
34:02: Remember their destiny. You don't want to follow somebody that's taking you to hell. And by the way, they're not saying, come to hell with me.
34:08: They're saying, come to heaven with me. But it's not through that narrow gate. It's not through that narrow road.
34:15: It's the wide road. Our Lord Jesus said, when the son of man comes in his glory and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne.
34:28: Before him will be gathered all the nations and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.
34:36: Why would I want to follow the goat herder? I know you wouldn't want to follow him either.
34:44: If you turn back to 1st Peter chapter one, of course, who wrote 2nd
34:49: Peter, Peter, who wrote 1st Peter? Any guesses? Peter. Good. You're smarter than most liberal theologians.
34:59: Sometime this week, read 1st Peter and 2nd Peter together, and you'll see wonderful connections like this.
35:05: They have hell reserved for them. Don't follow them. What do we have, dear Christian? What's a real teacher preach?
35:11: What's Peter teach? The apostolic sent one of the Lord Jesus. Jesus wanted Peter to preach this message.
35:18: And here's a message from Peter. Verse three, blessed be the God and father of our
35:23: Lord Jesus Christ. According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus from the dead to an inheritance.
35:34: Think about eternal truth that is imperishable, undefiled and unfading.
35:41: Reserved are kept in heaven for you who, by God's power, are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
35:51: And what is a Christian response to that truth that heaven is reserved for you? Dear Christian, it's reserved.
35:57: It's guaranteed. What's the response? What's for lunch? Well, the response is in this you rejoice.
36:06: Are you going to go to heaven? Though now for a little while, if necessary, you've been grieved by various trials.
36:12: Why do we go through trial so that the tested genuineness of your faith, more precious than gold that perishes through, though it is tested by fire, may be found to result in the praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
36:27: Bethlehem Bible Church, though you have not seen Jesus, you love him. Though you do not see Jesus now, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory.
36:38: And what's the end game? Gloom, darkness, hell, torment? No. Obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls.
36:50: By the way, false teachers will tell you if you're going through troubles now, it's because you don't have enough faith. And the
36:56: Bible says you're going through troubles now because you're being tested, groomed. What a great truth reserved in heaven for me.
37:07: I know with my actions and attitudes this week, if I could have unreserved that spot in heaven for me, it would have been done.
37:13: How about you? The way I live this week in front of God and my family,
37:19: I have kept my reservation in heaven. Is that how you would talk? Good thing it has been reserved back to second
37:27: Peter chapter two. Why should you avoid false teachers? Well, the
37:32: Lord Jesus wants us to avoid them. And we see the effects of false teaching.
37:38: The effects are, there are no eternal perspectives from them. There's no edification that's real.
37:43: There's no reservation in heaven for them rather in hell. And number four found in verse 18, another no, and I'll do this for the younger people so they can track false teachers.
37:55: Kids have no clue. Okay. Does that resonate? No clue.
38:01: They just run their mouths, their big mouths. And you know what? They have a little thing in preaching. And that is if you can't preach very well, and you've got to kind of a weak point, like number four is a weak point.
38:12: What do they say? Weak point. Shout. Why? Because if you talk loud enough, then you kind of overpower your weak oratory.
38:21: That's what they do. Look, verse 18 for speaking loud boasts of folly.
38:29: They entice by sensual passions of the flesh. That's what they're going to use for the bait.
38:35: Your flesh, those who barely escaping from those who live in error.
38:41: They're going to go after people who are new to the faith, struggling in the faith. And they're like, you know what?
38:47: You can do whatever you want. Sex, drugs, and rock and roll. God's taken care of it. Everything paid for.
38:53: You can't undo what God has done. Internal security, preservation of the saints, preservation by God. You do whatever you want.
38:59: And we're going to do it loud enough that you're probably going to believe it. We're going to talk long enough that you're probably going to buy into it.
39:05: Loud boast of folly. Would you go to a doctor who had no clue? I could say, have you been to a doctor?
39:13: Would you go to a tax accountant that had no clue? Would you have a contractor hired to build you a house that had no clue?
39:23: Would you go on a submarine with a captain that had no clue? These people speak loud boasts.
39:32: Things of emptiness, inflated, puffed up. They just run their mouth. They're full of hot air.
39:41: And so don't be the Christian that says, you know what? I've been dealing with issues and struggling. Or you're a go.
39:51: I can see that 10 feet away. I'm not going to, that's going to avoid it. You're going to try to appeal to my fleshly lust to get me to follow you.
39:58: No, no. I'm to deny my lust and deny myself. And as a believer in Christ Jesus, I've been given the power in second
40:05: Peter chapter one, verse three, to say no to sin. And the answer is no, no, no. One of the things
40:11: I find most fascinating is when you're a brand new Christian is when you most love TBN. How'd you see
40:16: Benny Hinn? You better be careful slaying people in the spirit better be careful.
40:30: I'm just in my mind. I'm just trying not to say, let the bodies hit the floor. That's what I'm just trying to do. Just forcing myself not to say it out loud.
40:43: The fish doesn't see the treble hook. She sees a nice worm. What's the worm for new
40:48: Christians who are already struggling with their sins, who are already dealing with issues, backslidden
40:53: Christians. If that's even a thing struggling with sin, Christians, Oh, I'm not as bad as I guess.
40:59: I thought I was. And it's just so appealing. Don't do that. They're playing you.
41:07: They're seducing you. There's a day after they use boastful speech, go for it.
41:16: God's job is to forgive. And they use invitations to indulge the flesh.
41:24: And remember they're saying Jesus isn't coming back anyway. So what's the big deal? No judgment, no moral law, uttering great swelling words of vanity.
41:33: As one writer said, loud talk. Oh, I could just go for some good lawless living right now.
41:41: Please do. You're forgiven. Run from that. Don't fall for those kinds of people.
41:51: I know somebody that usually tells me, uh, they'll say I have, when I have a decision to make, I pick the one that I don't want to make.
41:57: It's probably the right one. I've got three decisions. Which one don't I want to do the most? This one. It's probably the right one.
42:03: Now that's not foolproof, but if somebody's trying to lure me with fleshly ungodly living, haven't
42:11: I been saved out of that? Haven't I been saved from that? These people are dangerous.
42:20: Their words are loud, boast of folly. Unlike second Peter chapter one words that come from God and the
42:27: Holy spirit. Number five, no freedom. Verse 19 kind of related. No freedom, no eternal perspective, notification, no reservation, no clue, no freedom.
42:39: We'll do these next three quickly. Verse 19. They promise them freedom. Hey, new believer.
42:46: Hey, struggling believer. Hey, non -believer, you want freedom, but they themselves are slaves of corruption for whatever overcomes a person.
42:54: Here's a little proverb for you to that. He is enslaved. That proverb is languages of a military takes over a country.
43:02: That country has fish hooks in their nose and they do what they're told. Why would I want to do that?
43:08: I came from slavery to sin. They're promising me freedom, but they're slaves of corruption.
43:14: I don't know a lot, but I know that if I want to lose weight, I don't buy a diet book written by somebody who weighs a thousand pounds.
43:22: Maybe if they weigh a thousand and they lost 800. Okay. Freedom, freedom, freedom, freedom from slaves.
43:28: The slaves are saying, join us. We're shackled and they don't even declare freedom.
43:35: They promise it. You don't have to obey the 10 commandments. You don't have to be the moral law. You don't have to be the, the, the law that's written on your heart.
43:43: I mean, God fulfilled that all. You don't have to do it even as a guide or even as a, as a norming norm or direction, just do whatever you want.
43:49: And also you're free from judgment because judgment doesn't exist. Be free from slaves for whatever overcomes a person to that.
44:02: He is enslaved. Why go back to slavery? Do you remember your old days, dear Christian, when you were slaves to sin and there's nothing you could do about it and you couldn't get out.
44:09: You wanted out your conscience, wanted out. You were just so wanting forgiveness and so wanting to be freed from the slavery of those sins.
44:17: You ever want to go back to that? We don't want to go back to that. These antinomians anti -law gnome law, anti -law.
44:25: You know what? We're just going to do whatever we Jesus forgives. Philosopher Seneca said to be enslaved to oneself is the heaviest of all servitudes.
44:34: Don't be duped by what they say. Romans six says, do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey either of sin, which leads to death or of obedience, which leads to righteousness.
44:51: But thanks be to God that you who are once slaves of sin have become obedient from the heart to the standard of teaching to which you were committed.
45:00: And having been set free from sin have become slaves of righteousness. Number six, no progress.
45:08: Number six, no progress found in verse 20. I'd like to have progress in my Christian life.
45:13: These people do the opposite. There's regression. Verse 20. Why should you not follow false teachers?
45:20: Why should you say no to false teachers? For if after they have escaped the defilements of the world through the knowledge of our
45:29: Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and overcome. The last state has become worse for them than the first.
45:39: I'll address this a little more next week, but it's super simple. Take somebody who's an unbeliever and they don't know anything about the
45:45: Lord Jesus Christ. And they were to die. What would happen to that person who died bearing their own sins?
45:52: Would they go to heaven? No, they would not. Because they're sinful people. They have Adam's sin and their own sin.
45:59: What if these people were pagans and they said, you know what? We're going to study Jesus.
46:04: We're going to learn about Jesus. He's like the Lord and he's the Savior. And we're going to learn some about him.
46:11: And then we're going to tell other people, you know what? Jesus isn't really that much of a Lord. You can do whatever you want.
46:16: He likes to forgive. You like to sin. It's a perfect marriage made in hell. And we're just going to learn and learn and learn and learn.
46:23: And then that person dies. Which hell is worse? This hell or that hell?
46:29: That's the point of this verse. This has nothing to do with losing your salvation. This has to do, if you're going to die, you should die not knowing about the
46:36: Lord Jesus Christ, because you will be held accountable for knowing what you know. And they're teaching what they ought not to be teaching.
46:44: They had a knowledge of our Lord and Savior, but they're overcome. The last state has become worse for them than the first.
46:52: It would have been better for them to die in their sins before they died in their sins of saying they love
46:58: Jesus and teaching people the opposite of what Jesus has done. It is like the Lord himself in Matthew 12, that it goes and brings with it seven other spirits more evil than itself.
47:09: And when they enter and dwell there, the last state of that person is worse than the first.
47:15: Apostasy is real. And these false teachers that run their mouths, would you like to be in their shoes on judgment day?
47:23: Knowing what they've said about the Lord Jesus and what they haven't said? Scary.
47:31: And then lastly, verses 21 and 22, the seventh no is they have no sense, no knowledge.
47:39: I guess we could have included this in the last, because it's an expansion with the word for there in verse 21, no sense
47:45: S E N S E for it would have been better for them never to have known the way of righteousness, the gospel truths about our risen savior, our great substitute, the lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.
47:57: Then after knowing it, knowing the gospel to turn back from the holy commandment delivered to them.
48:03: And then we have two Proverbs put together that both mean the same thing. What the truth proverb says has happened to them.
48:10: The dog returns to its own vomit. The sow after washing herself returns to wallow in the mire.
48:22: Well, I, I was 13 and I walked the aisle and I signed the card and I raised my hand and I accepted
48:30: Jesus in my life. And then I went through puberty and got a driver's license. And then I'm still living with the girl.
48:37: I'm still this, I'm still that I'm still the other as a pattern of unrighteousness. The Bible says, do not be deceived.
48:43: Fornicators and adulterers and homosexuals will not inherit the kingdom of God. What's going on here?
48:50: Why is he talking this way? Why do people run back to it? If you've really been cleansed, yes,
48:56: Christians struggle with sin, but they don't live in unrighteous States of sin. The dog returns to its own vomit.
49:04: And by the way, this isn't your cute little dog at home. Jews hated dogs. Jews despised dogs.
49:10: Jews hated pigs. They were unclean. He used these Proverbs to say, you know what?
49:15: Here's my main point. Perseverance is a true Mark of genuine saving faith.
49:24: First John chapter two about false teachers. They went out from us, but they did not really belong to us.
49:31: For if they had belonged to us, they would have remained with us, but they're going showed that none of them belonged to us.
49:41: We thought they were a sheep, but they were pigs and dogs. What kind of language?
49:54: The key for second Peter chapter two, with all this difficult truths of false teachers.
50:00: I mean, who likes to talk about false teachers, but it is through the lens of chapter one, where you see the real and true teacher, the exalted prophet, priest, and King Jesus Christ.
50:10: And when you see him for his glory, then anyone that would come along and mar his glory or take away from his fame or deface him or besmirch his character, these people need to be called out.
50:21: And Paul called them out by name. Did he not in other places, our statement of faith rings true to the
50:30: Bible. God has appointed a day where he will judge the world in righteousness by Jesus Christ, to whom all power and judgment is given of the father in which day, not only apostate angels shall be judged, but likewise, all persons that have lived on the earth shall appear before the tribunal of Christ to give an account of their thoughts, words, and deeds, and to receive according to what they have done in the body, whether good or evil.
50:57: The end of God's appointing this day is for the manifestation of the glory of his mercy in the eternal salvation of the elect and of his justice in the eternal damnation of the reprobate who are wicked and disobedient.
51:12: For then shall the righteous go into everlasting life and receive that fullness of joy and glory with everlasting rewards in the presence of the
51:19: Lord. But the wicked who know not God and obey not the gospel of Jesus Christ shall be cast aside into everlasting torments and punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the
51:33: Lord and from the glory of his power. And those are the kind of people we need to say no to so we can say yes to the
51:41: Lord Jesus. Bow with me, please. Thank you, Father, for your word. Difficult, hard, not uplifting per se, but that judgment day will make sure all wrongs are righted.
51:57: And we admit that if we had to be judged for our thoughts, words, and deeds, we would be undone as well.
52:03: But we are in Christ Jesus by a sovereign act of your good pleasure. And you see us as you see your son, obedient.
52:10: You see us as you see your son, spotless, blameless, because in fact, we are united to him because of your great work and we received it by faith and by faith alone.
52:21: We praise you for that. I would ask as a pastor that you would guard the people here from false teachers, that you would easily have them size up the false teachers so that they might say with Jesus and Peter, no.
52:35: And I pray for those that are here today that are not Christians, that you would grant them eternal life by faith alone.
52:43: There's no sin that anybody could ever commit that's greater than your grace and forgiveness found at Calvary.
52:50: And I would pray that you would soften their hearts and convict them, that they might reach out by the hand of faith and ask for mercy.
52:57: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner. And we are very, very thankful, Lord, that your son is going to come back and it's going to be a great day of rejoicing.
53:05: We don't have to be afraid because we're in Christ. We're beloved sons and daughters. And so we look forward to that great day where Jesus comes back.
