Hey guys, Colin here, and welcome back to Fight for Truth. In this video, we're going to talk about Alistair Begg and his recent comments about LGBT weddings.
00:08
This one is particularly disappointing, because Alistair has a decades -long track record of solid
00:13
Biblical Reform teaching. He's also associated with many reputable organizations, like Ligonier Ministries and the
00:19
Shepherds Conference. In other words, we're not talking about an obvious fool like Joel Osteen or anyone like that.
00:25
So I don't think anyone saw this coming. In a recent podcast, Alistair Begg spoke about a conversation that took place between him and a woman who he was giving pastoral counsel to.
00:35
Specifically, this was a woman who asked if she should attend her grandson's wedding to a transgender person.
00:41
Here's what he said. And in very specific areas this comes across, I mean, you and I know that we field questions all the time that go along the lines of, my grandson is about to be married to a transgender person, and I don't know what to do about this, and I'm calling to ask you to tell me what to do, which is a huge responsibility.
01:03
And in a conversation like that just a few days ago, and people may not like this answer, but I asked the grandmother, does your grandson understand your belief in Jesus?
01:18
Yes. Does your grandson understand that your belief in Jesus makes it such that you can't count on his maintenance in any affirming way, the choices that he has made in life?
01:30
Yes. I said, well then okay, as long as he knows that, then I suggest that you do go to the ceremony and I suggest that you buy them a gift.
01:39
With all due respect, none of what he just said actually matters, at least not in the way he thinks it does.
01:45
If your gay family member already knows that you, as a Christian, disapprove of their entire lifestyle, then why do you need to attend their wedding at all?
01:54
If you've already made it clear that your heart is broken by their sin and that it's an abomination before the
01:59
Lord, Leviticus 18 .22, then how's it going to somehow fix everything and bring unity to your relationship if you go to one party for them?
02:08
Oh, and by the way, your family member is going to know exactly where you stand on this because you don't go to the wedding.
02:14
As we all know, actions speak louder than words. For you to condemn what he does in all of your words will do very little if there is no real action behind it.
02:24
You need to practice what you're preaching to him. If you genuinely believe that this event is an abomination before God, then why would you show up?
02:31
And why would he expect you to? Well, the answer from Alistair Begg is, you show up and bring a gift to demonstrate that you love this person.
02:39
But think about what a mixed message that is. Imagine saying to someone, I disagree with everything about what you're doing, but I'm happy to show up to the party that you're throwing to celebrate it.
02:49
Oh, and by the way, I think that you living in a house with this person in relationship is a sin against God.
02:55
But here's a toaster I bought for you that you can use while you live together. None of this makes any sense.
03:01
But he continues. Oh, she said, what? She was caught off guard. I said, well, here's the thing.
03:09
You're not going to, your love for them may catch them off guard, but your absence will simply reinforce the fact that they said these people are, what
03:20
I always thought, judgmental, critical, unprepared to countenance anything. Again, with all due respect, none of this actually matters.
03:28
Why does your LGBT relative get to define you, a Christian, as a judgmental and mean person if you don't go to their sin party?
03:36
And let me get this straight. They don't have to submit to God's moral standard, but you have to submit to theirs?
03:42
Please explain to me how that makes any sense, as a Christian. And just to be clear, our goal as Christians is not to be loving as defined by sinful man, but to be loving by keeping
03:52
God's commandments. Romans 13 .10 literally says that love is the fulfilling of God's moral law.
03:59
And God's law has absolutely nothing positive to say about LGBT relationships or weddings or supporting them in any practical way.
04:08
But as if this wasn't enough, Alistair continues. And it is a fancy, it is a fine line, isn't it?
04:14
It really is. And people need to work out their own salvation with fear and trembling. But I think we're going to take that risk.
04:20
We're going to have to take that risk a lot more if we want to build bridges into the hearts and lives of those who don't understand
04:28
Jesus and don't understand that He is a king. So now we see what it really comes down to.
04:34
Do whatever it takes to get unbelievers to like you. You can do almost anything you want, as long as you do it in the name of evangelism.
04:41
But again, the Bible does not tell us to spread the gospel however we want, personally.
04:46
No, we are to spread the gospel while also honoring God in all of our actions. First Corinthians 10 .31.
04:53
So what Alistair actually needs to prove here is that attending an LGBT wedding is honoring to God and that it can be classified as being faithful to His word.
05:02
But instead, all he actually proved is that attending an LGBT wedding will make gay people like you more.
05:08
But whether or not this is an effective or biblical evangelism strategy was not proven by anything that he said, just to be clear.
05:15
And as a result, in the wake of all this, Alistair Begg's radio show was pulled from American Family Radio, the station that hosted it, for 12 years.
05:24
The people who run the station reached out to him and his team, obviously disappointed. They asked
05:29
Alistair if he regretted the statement and if he would recant it. They wanted to get unity. But the answer that they received from his team, in their words, was that, quote,
05:37
Alistair was not going to change his mind in that, quote, he would be standing by his original comment.
05:42
This is even more disappointing. But what is the real problem here? Well, as I and many others have said about the
05:48
LGBT movement, the problem is that modern megachurch pastors too often treat this sin as though it's somehow different from all the others, as if it gets a pass, as though it deserves special treatment from us as Christians.
06:01
But this is completely untrue. Christians are called to have equal and consistent standards. 1
06:06
Timothy 5 .21. We don't make exceptions for certain sins because people tend to like them more.
06:12
So here's a question. Using Alistair Begg's standard consistently, what other sinful events should a
06:18
Christian attend and bring a gift to? What if a man wants to have a ceremony wherein he marries himself?
06:23
Should we show up to that? What if your transgender nephew wants to have a party celebrating his transition to become a girl with hormones and surgery and all the rest of it?
06:33
Would you show up to that and bring him a gift? Suppose your cousin wanted to have a party to celebrate the procedure done to end the life of the baby in her womb.
06:41
Should Christians attend that, as long as they do it in the name of spreading the Gospel at some point later on? These may all sound like crazy examples to you, but I can assure you that they will all become a reality if our culture continues to go where it's going.
06:54
But by Alistair Begg's frankly unbiblical standard, the Christian would have no choice but to attend these parties so that they can avoid appearing judgmental or unloving to the pagan world.
07:05
And this is the absurdity of trying to appease sinful men. And ironically, none of this says that you're a loving or kind person.
07:12
It just says that you don't have a spine. And it will feed into the narcissism of a movement that says anyone who doesn't support them wholeheartedly is hateful and judgmental.
07:21
So Christians, please do not attend these events. Passionately spread the Gospel and love people, yes, but do it in a way that honors
07:28
God and brings Him ultimate glory. Please pray for this channel and for anyone mentioned in the video.
