We are to be equipped to grow and..."attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes. -Eph 4:13-14

GotQuestions about 1 John
https://www.gotquestions.org/questions-about-1-John.html
- 00:00
- All right, where are we at? I heard Liberty whisper it, 1
- 00:05
- John. Where at in 1 John? Chapter 2, we're getting closer.
- 00:12
- What verses are we gonna cover this evening? Say again?
- 00:17
- 12 through 14. But what's that word we always talk about that we need to know for any given verse?
- 00:27
- Context. Delaney, what is context? Context is the surrounding words that have to do with the specific thing that you're reading.
- 00:36
- Why did your voice get louder as you explained that? Context is the surrounding what?
- 00:42
- Is the surrounding sentences, words, anything that has to do with the specific thing that you're reading.
- 00:50
- Yes. Context is always important because if you leave the context, you can really make the
- 00:55
- Scripture say anything you want. Right? So I want you to think about that. One of my favorite examples is someone could walk up and say,
- 01:03
- Hey Callie, did you know that the Bible says there is no God? Psalm 14 .1 says there is no God.
- 01:09
- But the context says the fool has said in his heart there is no God. Oh, well that changes things, right?
- 01:16
- So context is always important. Like Delaney said, we always look at the surrounding verses, surrounding sentences to inform us of any given verse.
- 01:24
- And I remember last time, I think it was Delaney that said, we really have to have the picture of all of Scripture in mind as we're studying any passage.
- 01:32
- So what are some common themes that we've been talking about so far from chapter 1 into chapter 2?
- 01:39
- I'll give you a hint. Well, I'll start off. We've talked a lot about fellowship. Fellowship is key all throughout 1
- 01:46
- John. Bless you. So someone help me out. What is fellowship in a Christian context? Avery?
- 02:00
- It's the saints being together, right? Why is that so important? How come we have a fellowship that's different than how the world gets together and does things?
- 02:10
- What's so different about the saints? J .D.?
- 02:15
- Okay, so fellowship with the saints builds you up and makes you a lot happier.
- 02:23
- And you talk about Scripture, but people can have just a hangout.
- 02:30
- And you could be tearing each other down. You could just be being mean.
- 02:37
- That's really good. The world, they could get together, have fun, participate in things, but not necessarily in truth.
- 02:45
- Not in the things of the Lord that, like you said, can build us up. Right? And so that's really key back in 1
- 02:51
- John 1, verse 4. John's talking about this fellowship that we have with the saints and with God, the
- 02:56
- Father, Son, and Spirit. He says that he's writing these things to us so that our joy may be complete.
- 03:03
- We can actually have a joy and an underlying contentment in all things, something different than the world has to offer.
- 03:10
- So a lot of this fellowship is what we're doing right here and right now. Okay? So we talked a lot about fellowship.
- 03:16
- What else have we talked about in 1 John? I think everybody was here last time, right?
- 03:24
- Actually, we were with the adults last time. Well, you still don't get passes. Aaron? Wasn't it legalism and anti -nomad?
- 03:33
- Ooh. All right. I want you to explain to me what legalism is.
- 03:39
- So legalism is legal.
- 03:49
- So legalism is a spirit that rivals the gospel, meaning that it tries to use
- 03:54
- Bible lingo, Bible terminology, and twist it into something that distorts the truth.
- 04:01
- So does anybody else remember or want to take a crack at what legalism is? Dawn? It's just taking the
- 04:09
- Ten Commandments and expanding on it and making it more extravagant in their eyes and putting rules and rules on top of rules, thinking that they can accomplish it on their own, apart from Christ.
- 04:21
- Legalism, like you're saying, says, look at all these laws, look at all these commandments, and I'm going to keep them in order to earn favor with God.
- 04:31
- My salvation, my forgiveness is contingent on how well I obey the commandments.
- 04:36
- That's legalism. Islam literally says, yeah, that's the path to paradise, to be restored with Allah, is how well you keep the commandments.
- 04:48
- Okay? Now, Judaism, not true Judaism that came from the Old Testament, but does anybody know that there was 400 years of silence in between the
- 04:56
- Old Testament and New Testament? It's called the Intertestamental Period, where Second Temple Judaism twists the law of Moses into legalism.
- 05:06
- It says we can basically earn favor with God. That's the Pharisees that we read about in the
- 05:11
- Gospels. Okay? So legalism is wrong. It's not pleasing to God by saying,
- 05:17
- God, look at all the works, look at all the commandments that I obeyed. And modern -day legalism says that I'm going to do certain works to be saved, and I'm going to continue to do works in order to stay saved.
- 05:30
- Does anybody know any forms of legalism? We've already talked about a few. Islam, right?
- 05:36
- Second Temple Judaism. You have certain denominations that exist that say that you have to do baptism in order to be made right with God.
- 05:45
- And my first response is, well, that's legalism, as if your act of a ceremony is what makes you right before God.
- 05:53
- And these sects, these denominations that really say that you have to continue to live a holy life, and if you don't, then you're damned.
- 06:02
- That's legalism, right? So what was that other fancy word that you said, Aaron? Antinomadism.
- 06:09
- So antinomianism, what's another way of saying that? Licentiousness. So antinomianism, licentiousness.
- 06:17
- Remember the two L's, legalism, licentiousness. What is that? Any idea?
- 06:23
- Any takers out there, Delaney? It's the opposite of legalism. It's saying because God is saving me, because I have this ticket to heaven,
- 06:31
- I can do whatever I want, sin however I want. Yes. It's basically saying, I have a license to sin.
- 06:37
- I have a license to sin so God's grace may abound all the more. No. If your heart has been changed, remember
- 06:44
- Christians are walking in the light. We say, nope, that's the ditch of legalism to the left. I'm not doing commandments in order to be made right with God.
- 06:52
- And on the other side of the road, it's like, no, that's licentiousness. I'm not going to abuse grace. I'm not going to sin so grace may abound because Christ saved me from that life.
- 07:02
- I desire to obey God and to give him glory. As we continue to look into 1
- 07:07
- John, the law of God is not burdensome. It's delightful to the Christian because we know that this is a life that gives
- 07:14
- God glory. So in 1 John 2, look with me at verse 3.
- 07:21
- And by this we know that we have come to know him if we keep his commandments.
- 07:28
- This is where the legalist says, see, you've got to keep the commandments. Jesus said in John 14 verse 15, if you love me, you will keep my commandments.
- 07:37
- And what we're saying, notice the first part, if you love me, Jesus says, if you have a loving relationship, if you've been changed and you're walking with him, of course you're going to keep the commandments.
- 07:47
- That's kind of what he says here. Whoever says I know him, and if this person truly does know
- 07:53
- Christ, then, yeah, they're going to want to keep the commandments. So that's the straight, narrow way of truth, walking with Christ.
- 08:01
- The gospel of grace says I put all my trust in Christ, therefore I desire to live a new life.
- 08:07
- So thank you, Aaron, for bringing out those two points of licentiousness and legalism.
- 08:15
- Last time we talked about an old commandment that is also a new commandment.
- 08:21
- That sounds weird. How can something be an old commandment and a new commandment at the same time? Y 'all remember?
- 08:26
- It's been a few weeks. Anybody remember what 1 John was talking about in verses 7 and 8?
- 08:35
- Y 'all weren't hearing. Y 'all get a pass. But y 'all should be reading 1 John. Oh, that's the old commandment, right?
- 08:47
- Anybody remember where that was found in the Old Testament? Um -bum -bum. Leviticus 19 .18
- 09:00
- is the old commandment that said love your neighbor as yourself. And we talked about who is our neighbor.
- 09:07
- Does anybody remember? Everyone, right? Now, we talked about that the modern debate of the day was, well, couldn't our neighbor just be those that look like us and we can actually hate our enemy?
- 09:19
- That's what Second Temple Judaism did. They reinterpreted Leviticus 19 .18.
- 09:24
- It says we love the Jews, people that look like us, but the pagans, no. They can rot for all we care.
- 09:30
- That's really what they said. And when you go back and look at Leviticus 19, it even said how you're supposed to show love for foreigners that come into the land.
- 09:39
- So I'm just saying they were taking a verse out of context. So that's an old commandment.
- 09:46
- Let me ask you this. Does anybody really keep that old commandment? And you may say, yeah,
- 09:51
- I love everyone that God brings into my life all the time. But do you love your neighbor perfectly?
- 09:59
- We can't do it, right? We may be doing good in our human eyes occasionally, but we don't do it perfectly.
- 10:06
- And so the point is the Old Testament law shows you that you fall short of that standard.
- 10:13
- Okay? That's why when we looked at Jesus interacting with the law, you remember he was trying to justify himself.
- 10:19
- And he was like, who is my neighbor? And Jesus was like, well, let me give you that whole parable of the Good Samaritan. You tell me who's your neighbor.
- 10:26
- And Jesus quoted the Old Testament law and says, if you do this, you will live. But guess what? No one does the old commandments perfectly and lives.
- 10:36
- We all fall short of that standard. Okay? But that's the old commandment. And then Jesus, the night before the crucifixion,
- 10:42
- Does anybody remember what he did to the disciples in John chapter 13? Delaney? Did he wash their feet?
- 10:49
- He did. What did that model for the disciples? Humbleness, humility, love.
- 10:58
- And he says, I give you a new commandment. Other people will know that you're my disciples by your love for one another.
- 11:06
- So that's the new commandment, is that we have a special love for the disciples, the saints of God.
- 11:12
- How is that possible? How are we able to actually obey a command that's pleasing to God? Well, we have the
- 11:18
- Holy Spirit indwelling us. We're actually able to participate in a fellowship of love that is pleasing to God.
- 11:25
- The old commandment, you couldn't do that. You could only fall short. But now, once we are changed by the
- 11:30
- Spirit, that we love Christ and we're walking in the light as he is in the light, we are actually able to participate in a love with one another that is pleasing to God.
- 11:39
- A new commandment that Jesus himself modeled. If you think, what is that commandment? Well, Jesus washed the disciples' feet.
- 11:45
- We are supposed to have that level of humility and love towards one another. Does that mean we make a third ordinance for the church and say, all right, every
- 11:52
- Lord's Day we wash each other's feet? No. Some churches do that. And they try to say, see, that's another ordinance.
- 11:58
- I'm like, man, the whole context is he's trying to say, show this love towards one another.
- 12:04
- And I got some pretty stinky feet, so I'd hate for somebody to have to go through all that.
- 12:11
- So that's what John was talking about earlier in the passage. There's an old commandment,
- 12:17
- Leviticus 19 .18, love your neighbor as yourself. But it's also a new commandment. Jesus fulfilled it, and we are to follow after his example.
- 12:26
- So now we are to verses 12 through 14. So if you would follow along with me.
- 12:32
- John says, I am writing to you, little children, because your sins are forgiven for his namesake.
- 12:38
- I am writing to you, fathers, because you know him who is from the beginning. I am writing to you, young men, because you have overcome the evil one.
- 12:46
- I am writing to you, children, because you know the Father. I write to you, fathers, because you know him who is from the beginning.
- 12:53
- I write to you, young men, because you are strong. And the word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the evil one.
- 13:02
- So raise your hand. What are some details going on in this passage? Callie? He did.
- 13:09
- So there's kind of a poetic flair going on. What exactly did he repeat himself in?
- 13:19
- Right? Which he's really driving the point home like, hey, listen up. This is important. I'm writing this to you. He says that over and over again all throughout 1
- 13:26
- John. That's a really good observation. What's something else that he said in these verses? So let me throw this out there.
- 13:32
- How many different types of people does he refer to here? Did you all catch it? There's three.
- 13:41
- J .D.? So he had fathers, young men, and children. Yes. Okay. And like Callie was saying, he's kind of repeating himself in a poetic fashion.
- 13:51
- Now, I've done the hard work for you all. I've read a lot of commentaries, listened to sermons. And not everybody agrees on what he's getting at, but there's one principle.
- 14:00
- So the whole lesson tonight will be about spiritual maturity. Okay? Think about the natural progression in life.
- 14:08
- You start out as a young child. And as you grow, you grow up into a young man, young woman.
- 14:13
- Right? And then you grow up to be a father, mother. You're mature. Okay? So we think about that in a physical sense, but it's also true spiritually.
- 14:22
- Okay? And I liked what Callie said too. We noticed that John here keeps saying,
- 14:28
- I write these things to you. I think this is important for the context because John just got done talking about a new commandment.
- 14:37
- Remember earlier in verse 10 he says, Whoever loves his brother abides in the lie, and in him there is no cause for stumbling.
- 14:45
- But whoever hates his brother is in the darkness and walks in the darkness and does not know where he is going because the darkness has blinded his eyes.
- 14:54
- I think John's audience is Christians. And maybe there are some of those that have a sensitive spirit like, oh, no, am
- 15:02
- I loving my brother the way that I should? Am I loving the brethren? And so they hear that if you don't have this love, then you're walking in darkness.
- 15:12
- And so it's almost like John is saying, hey, let me give you a word of encouragement. Don't be dismayed the fact that we're talking about an old commandment and a new commandment because a lot of us, when we look at the law of God, we're like, man,
- 15:23
- I'm really unworthy. I don't live up to this. And there's a healthy aspect to that. But I think in verse 12 through 14, he wants to give a word of encouragement to fathers that are in the faith, to young men, young women, and little children.
- 15:39
- He wants to remind them of the truths that we should be renewing our hearts and minds with day by day.
- 15:45
- And I think the first truth in verse 12, he says, I am writing to you, little children, because your sins are forgiven.
- 15:54
- Why? For his namesake. It doesn't matter what level of spiritual maturity you're in.
- 16:01
- You always need to be reminded, I've been saved by God's grace. Why can I have peace?
- 16:06
- Why can I have joy? Well, Jesus paid it all on the cross for my account. I have peace with God.
- 16:12
- Everything else is small potatoes in this world once we've been made right with God.
- 16:19
- And what I mean is we're going to all go through hardships and trials, right? Well, how can I still have joy through all of that?
- 16:25
- Well, I've been forgiven, right? I've been reconciled with the creator of the universe who I sinned against and really have earned death, earned hell.
- 16:35
- And yet it's been all taken care of on my account. You know what I mean? And so John is reminding his audience, hey, rejoice in these things because your sins have been forgiven.
- 16:46
- Question. How are our sins forgiven and full?
- 16:51
- How does a person be made right with God and have forgiveness? Somebody help me. This is really important gospel 101 stuff.
- 17:02
- Delaney. Jesus, when he died on the cross for our sins, we ask for his forgiveness and then the
- 17:10
- Holy Spirit comes within us and awakens us from the dead because we're dead in our sins.
- 17:17
- And then when Christ died on the cross, he took our sins upon him and then his righteousness was put onto us so that when
- 17:25
- God looked at us, he saw his son. Nailed it. So he says this earlier in chapter 1.
- 17:33
- Look with me back at verse 7. But if we walk in the light as he is in the light, talking about Jesus, we have fellowship with one another and the blood of Jesus his son cleanses us from some sins.
- 17:46
- Oh, excuse me. It says all sins there, right? So the point is we have an advocate now.
- 17:52
- John tells us that. So once we're in Christ by faith, then that's a done deal.
- 17:58
- That doesn't mean that life is just going to be hunky -dory and just spanky for the rest of our life.
- 18:03
- No, in fact, we're going to enter a persecution. People are going to ridicule us for the sake of following Jesus.
- 18:09
- And I'll just be the first to say, I do an apologetics ministry, and I have a lot of hatred from many people that just say, you think you're saved by faith alone apart from works?
- 18:20
- I'm like, yeah, Jesus' works are perfect. I'm not looking to the things that I can do. I'm looking to the one who did it perfectly.
- 18:27
- That makes a lot of people mad because they want to have a part in their salvation. It also makes sense, though.
- 18:34
- Talking about what? That he did work perfectly and there's nothing you can do, works -wise, to earn your salvation.
- 18:45
- I was going to say there's kind of a fallen perspective that tries to make sense and say, well, if I sinned, then
- 18:53
- I have to make it right. That's a very worldly thing, but like you're saying, so much sense of what the Scripture says.
- 18:58
- No, no, no, you only mess it up. That's why in faith you need to look to the one who did it perfectly, something that we couldn't do, and the
- 19:06
- Scripture tells us it is finished. The works of salvation were accomplished at Calvary, and Jesus didn't stay dead.
- 19:13
- He resurrected the third day showing that God's Word is true, that was predicted to happen, that Jesus has the power to defeat sin and death, and that he is the risen
- 19:23
- Lord. He is God in the flesh, and if God resurrected from the dead, then we should probably believe him and what he says because you've got to think,
- 19:31
- Jesus told us there's an afterlife. The Old Testament not only told us that, but we need to look to the one who knows all things for truth.
- 19:39
- A lot of y 'all in homeschool, y 'all study logic, y 'all study apologetics. My big push in apologetics is for anyone to know truth at all.
- 19:49
- Even the most basic seeming truth about we exist, you could only know that if God has spoken and revealed to us what the world looks like.
- 19:58
- That has to be the starting point in order for everything else to make sense. If you take that foundation away, this world is a bunch of nonsense.
- 20:07
- Why are we here? Why do we seek after purpose? Why are we bound by these physical laws and these abstract laws of logic?
- 20:14
- All of this goes back to the Creator, and if you remove the Creator, then this world is nonsense. People can do what's right in the sight of their own eyes, and it's going to be chaos.
- 20:23
- We learn that in the book of Judges. All that's to say is forgiveness of sins, like Delaney beautifully said,
- 20:31
- Jesus accomplished it all at Calvary, and if we look to Jesus in saving faith, then we get the perfect righteousness of Christ, and all of our sin is dealt with.
- 20:40
- That's the truth that John is reminding his audience. Because your sins are forgiven, for whose sake?
- 20:48
- Is it for Aaron's sake because you're really awesome, and God was just like, man,
- 20:53
- I'm going to save this guy because he's able to do so many wonderful deeds. No, I don't do wonderful.
- 21:01
- You're like, no, don't put that on me. No, but the verse says that your sins are forgiven for His namesake.
- 21:08
- So when you do a deep dive into His namesake for who God is, it's for His glory.
- 21:14
- That's what the Old Testament kind of speaks to. This world exists to glorify
- 21:20
- God. When people say, man, why does God allow so much suffering and evil to exist?
- 21:25
- Because God's going to redeem it. God's going to punish wickedness, and He will be glorified in His justice, in His wrath against sin.
- 21:36
- One of the most basic questions we could ask, what is the chief end of man? What is our purpose for existing?
- 21:42
- Does anybody know that catechism question? What is the chief end of man? Yes, thank you.
- 21:49
- To glorify God and to enjoy Him forever. Now, we can either glorify God by putting our faith in Christ in a loving relationship.
- 21:58
- He'll get glory that way. Or, if you deny Christ and die in your sin, then you will glorify
- 22:03
- God in punishment, eternal punishment for your sin, for your treason against the
- 22:10
- Creator. Point is, it's for His namesake. God is going to be glorified in His creation.
- 22:17
- I think that's beautiful for so many reasons because it tells me that Jeremiah, this world isn't about you.
- 22:24
- It's about God. It's about what He has revealed. It's about who He is and what He is accomplishing.
- 22:30
- Now, by His grace, I play a huge part in that. He's given me marching orders to go share the gospel to the ends of the earth.
- 22:39
- Whoever God puts in my life, I'm called to pray for the people God puts in my life and to share with them the good news.
- 22:48
- And I also have another calling. We all have a calling to serve in the fellowship, in the church.
- 22:53
- We all don't do the same things, like I'm here teaching. Now, everybody's called to teach in the same capacity, but we're all members of a body, right?
- 23:02
- A body's made up of all different parts, and nothing is greater than another part.
- 23:08
- You know what I mean? So I think John is trying to encourage his audience.
- 23:13
- Now, what's interesting is you all see the phrase little children here? This in the Greek is referring to any age person.
- 23:21
- He's just kind of saying little children, but whatever your walk of life is, no matter how old you are, whatever your background is, this encouragement is for you.
- 23:30
- If you're in Christ, you have your sins forgiven, and it's for his namesake, for his glory, okay?
- 23:37
- So we've talked a little bit about this poetry going on, and so I want to skip down in verse 13 where once again he mentions the word children.
- 23:48
- Now, this is a different Greek word than the one back in verse 12, which refers to any age.
- 23:55
- This in verse 14, I write to you children because you know the Father, this really entails someone who is young.
- 24:03
- So you got young people physically. This is really talking about those who are young in the faith.
- 24:09
- I want to say there can be someone who is very old in human terms, but is a spiritual babe, right, that is a child in the faith, and they maybe have been a child in the faith for a very, very long time.
- 24:24
- I think about so many Christians that go to unhealthy churches that are about an inch deep and a mile wide and never learn anything, and they stay spiritual children.
- 24:35
- They are saved by God's grace and understand the right gospel, but never flourish in their spiritual development and their spiritual growth, okay?
- 24:44
- And so children a lot of times don't know what they need. Isn't that true? A lot of us have younger siblings.
- 24:51
- They don't know what they need. I have a month old baby that doesn't know what he needs, right?
- 24:58
- And so he needs to be cared for and looked after. And so that's why Christianity is not just your relationship with God and you alone.
- 25:09
- It's also in fellowship and community with the saints. Christianity is supposed to be in community also.
- 25:16
- Does that make sense? It's not just one -on -one between you and God. It is that, but it's also with the saints. And it's because a lot of times we need discipleship.
- 25:25
- We need older people in the faith to say, hey, here's what you need for your spiritual growth. Does that make sense?
- 25:31
- So look back with me at verse 13. I write to you children, those who are young in the faith, because you know the
- 25:40
- Father. Now this is a beautiful truth. If you're a spiritual child, then that cannot be taken away from you.
- 25:48
- And remember earlier in verse 12, your sins are forgiven by faith, by faith alone apart from your works, but looking to the one who did it all perfectly.
- 25:58
- And the word no here really means relationship, right? If you're a child in Christ, then that means you have a heavenly father.
- 26:06
- You have a savior in Jesus Christ who is your advocate that intercedes on your behalf. And you have the
- 26:13
- Holy Spirit indwelling in you, okay? So I want us to think about this spiritual development, the spiritual growth from young children to young men and women and then to fathers and mothers in the faith, right?
- 26:27
- So look with me in the middle part of verse 13 where John says,
- 26:33
- I'm writing to you young men. And this kind of means young men, young women, just younger people, but a stage of development that's past the children part.
- 26:43
- I'm writing to you young men because you have overcome the evil one. So if you would skip down to the second half of verse 14.
- 26:53
- I write to you young men because you are strong and the word of God abides in you.
- 27:00
- And once again, you have overcome the evil one. So raise your hand. Who is the evil one being talked about here?
- 27:06
- The world. Okay, this is really good because the world is definitely a part of the evil one's schemes.
- 27:14
- So we're gonna hang on to the world here. But what else? What are some other thoughts? Who is the evil one?
- 27:20
- So this is where it's definitely both ends. So the evil one is Satan who runs the world, okay?
- 27:26
- So look down with me in verse 15. So we'll get in more into this next week.
- 27:32
- But do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the
- 27:37
- Father is not in him, okay? Now look at 1
- 27:42
- John 5, 19. John says, we know we are from God and the whole world lies in the power of the evil one, okay?
- 27:56
- Now what's so neat here is you got a young Christian that loves God, loves
- 28:01
- Jesus, has relationship with the Father, right? And ultimately the triune God. Has their sin forgiven.
- 28:08
- But we are to grow in our faith, right? You've moved from this person that's a mere babe in Christ to someone that understands doctrine, understands the truth, and is able to go to task with Satan, okay?
- 28:25
- And what's the only way to combat lies? With the truth, right?
- 28:31
- How do we avoid stumbling in the darkness of this world? By knowing the light, knowing the truth of God's word, right?
- 28:39
- So if you would, turn with me to Ephesians chapter 4 because we're talking about the overarching principle of spiritual maturity, growing up in the faith.
- 28:53
- And so this happens at two levels. Number one, one -on -one with your walk with God in the word, in prayer, but it's also in fellowship with the saints.
- 29:05
- And the reason why this is so important is because spiritual warfare is true. Does anybody know what spiritual warfare is?
- 29:12
- Dianne? Like the demons and the angels. Absolutely.
- 29:21
- There's kind of three enemies when it comes to talking about spiritual warfare. The world,
- 29:28
- Satan, and the flesh. All of those things are warring against us. But we're talking about the evil one.
- 29:34
- We're talking about the schemes of Satan. I want to fill you in on what
- 29:39
- Satan is primarily doing. Of course, he's accusing the saints, like we've talked about, which we have an advocate.
- 29:45
- We're like, good luck trying to accuse the saints because Jesus intercedes on our behalf, right? He is the great tempter.
- 29:54
- Thank Adam and Eve in the garden. Now, he still does that in the world today. He works through the sons and daughters of disobedience.
- 30:01
- It's kind of mysterious, but there's a spiritual element to the unbelieving world. Satan's at work, whether it's
- 30:07
- Satan himself or one of the demons or whatever. We're just talking about the kingdom of darkness is always at work, right?
- 30:15
- But Satan's primary goal is trying to deceive you with false doctrine.
- 30:23
- Because imagine if you believe a false gospel. Great, you're lost, right?
- 30:28
- I mean, that's really his push, is trying to distort the good news about Jesus, getting you to follow
- 30:34
- Muhammad, trying to get you to follow Buddha, trying to get you to believe in a works righteousness, a legalistic gospel or licentious gospel.
- 30:45
- Those are all false gospels. And this is really what, back in 1 John, he's riding against.
- 30:51
- He's riding against a heretical group of the Gnostics, those that said, well, Jesus didn't really come in the flesh.
- 30:58
- He might've been just a spirit being. Well, that ancient heresy is believing in a wrong
- 31:04
- Jesus. If you don't believe that Jesus came in the flesh, then you're not believing in the God -man, the only person who can forgive sin.
- 31:12
- So I want you to see there's a spiritual element, there is spiritual warfare that we have to guard our hearts against.
- 31:19
- The only way to do it is to not only know what the scripture says, but also to understand what it means.
- 31:28
- Has anybody ever opened up their Bible to try to read something? It's like, I'm confused. I don't really understand it.
- 31:34
- A lot, right? That's why we need the other saints, because there are certain men, there are certain women that are called to teach in the proper categories, to have mentors in the faith, to have discipleship.
- 31:47
- You were not made to lead the Christian walk with my Bible, me under a tree, and I don't need any help from anybody else.
- 31:55
- That's not the Christian walk. Now, is it important to have a devotion time? Yes. But it's also important to gather together with the saints, okay?
- 32:05
- So look with me at Ephesians chapter four, where we're talking about this unity in the body and how we are called to grow in our walk with Christ, to mature into adulthood in the faith.
- 32:17
- Do I have a volunteer that would read verse 11 through 15? Any takers out there?
- 32:24
- Lauren, if you would please, verse 11 through 15. Rather speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head into Christ.
- 33:03
- Thank you so much, Lauren. So I want to just look at a few important principles in this passage.
- 33:10
- So starting at the end with 15, rather speaking the truth in love, we can grow up in every way into him who is the head into Christ.
- 33:22
- So do you see this spiritual development, right? You're supposed to grow up, not to stay a babe in Christ, which is awesome.
- 33:30
- Your sins have been forgiven for his namesake, right? You have been washed by the blood of Jesus and all your sin is forgiven, but we're to grow.
- 33:38
- Look earlier in verse 13. We all attain into the unity of the faith and the knowledge of the
- 33:45
- Son of God into mature manhood to the measure of the stature and the fullness of Christ.
- 33:53
- Isn't that awesome? You're not supposed to just stay on spiritual milk, right?
- 33:58
- We need meat. We need to understand sound doctrine. We need God's truth to challenge us, right?
- 34:04
- And sometimes make us feel uncomfortable. You know, there are some people that are saved that still struggle with the fact that they're not good people, right?
- 34:15
- God's word tells us you're not good. You have a wrong understanding of the word good. If you use the word good to refer to yourself or other people,
- 34:23
- God alone is good because he is holy, righteous, right? And we're all sinners.
- 34:29
- It doesn't mean that we just mess up, but we shatter God's law. We are lawbreakers, right?
- 34:35
- You see how that understanding really helps us to understand who we are as people, okay?
- 34:41
- And so we are to grow up into these things. That's why verse 11 says that Christ equipping the church, he gave apostles, right?
- 34:50
- We read the New Testaments there. We read about the prophets of old. We read about prophets in the book of Acts and evangelists, right, that are tasked to doing evangelism and tasked with doing apologetics and things like that and shepherds, pastors, elders, overseers.
- 35:04
- How many elders do we have at 12 .5? Two, and you're talking with one of them, right?
- 35:11
- So this is a particular calling. Shepherd means to care for. Guess how shepherds are to care for the flock of God?
- 35:19
- Feeding them scripture and guarding them from wolves, guarding your heart and mind from the deceitful schemes of who?
- 35:29
- The devil, right? And so that's why I take this right here so serious.
- 35:35
- Look with me at verse 14. So that we may no longer be children, right?
- 35:42
- Think about how children just don't know a lot of times, right? We're to grow up out of that phase so that we may no longer be children tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine by human cunning, like Delaney said to Flesh earlier, and then also we see by the craftiness in deceitful schemes.
- 36:05
- Now who does that sound like, deceitful schemes? What do you think, Lauren? You're giving me that look like, you're like, yeah,
- 36:14
- I'm tracking with you. Who is that probably referring to? Who is constantly trying to deceive the truth?
- 36:21
- Not liberty. Sorry, you got thrown under the bus over there. So who do you think this potentially is referring to?
- 36:29
- A being that's crafty, that's trying to conjure up deceitful schemes to lead us astray.
- 36:36
- Who's the evil one? Satan. You can say it loud and proud. Satan. All right, so turn with me to Ephesians chapter six, because this definitely is talking about the deceitful cunnings of the flesh that distort truth, but then there's also spiritual warfare that's going on in ways that we can't always see, okay?
- 37:00
- Our battle for truth, remember the spiritual development, we have to graduate from being a young child into being a young man and woman of God, abiding in the word of God, being able to stand strong, which is knowing the word and not only knowing what it says, but knowing its meaning, okay?
- 37:21
- And so Paul tells us how we are to combat in spiritual warfare, how we are to combat the wicked one.
- 37:28
- So look at me at verse 10. Paul says, finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of your own might.
- 37:37
- Is that what it says? No, it's in his might, right? You don't look to yourself and your own strength because you're gonna fail, right?
- 37:46
- You don't look to any person and be like, you know what, I feel like a safe Christian because I have a really good teacher and I'm just following him.
- 37:53
- No, it has to be Christ, right? Be strong in the Lord. Someone who is maturing in the faith that's no longer a babe or a child, but a young person in the faith that has really grasped the word, right?
- 38:08
- Has understand, man, this is truth and I can be equipped to go out into the world.
- 38:14
- That's what Paul is trying to get us familiar with and that's what 1 John 2 is talking about. Finally, be strong in the
- 38:21
- Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.
- 38:31
- Next week, we're really gonna get into Jesus being tempted in the wilderness because he was tempted in all ways like we are, like a man, with the lust of the eyes, the lust of the flesh, and the pride of life.
- 38:42
- We're even gonna get into how that's what happened with Adam and Eve in the garden. Guess what? We all fell.
- 38:49
- Jesus conquered it all. And we now, by his example, we can actually combat the devil the way that Jesus did by standing on the truth.
- 39:00
- Does that make sense? That we put on the whole armor of God so we can stand against the schemes of the devil.
- 39:08
- Verse 12. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.
- 39:21
- Okay, so what Paul is getting at here is there is a battle that's going on and it's not flesh and blood.
- 39:27
- Now you may say, well, what about my flesh? Yes, but there is a deeper battle at hand than just the flesh and blood.
- 39:36
- What this means is if someone disagrees with us about the truth and who Christ is and salvation, we're not to get mad at them.
- 39:45
- Our battle is not with them. It's against Satan. It's against the spiritual powers of darkness.
- 39:51
- We love on unbelievers. We pray for them. We share the gospel with them. When they wanna start talking about truth, we can say, hey, actually the truth is not just abstract.
- 40:01
- The truth can actually be known personally because God is truth. God has revealed the truth to us.
- 40:07
- You can have a relationship with him. Does that make sense? We don't get mad at people that oppose us.
- 40:13
- We pray for them. We love on them, right? Because until God opens their heart to understand these things, of course they're not gonna be able to understand the things that we're saying.
- 40:22
- We understand we have a deeper battle going on and it's not against people. It's against Satan, right?
- 40:29
- That's spiritual warfare. And so someone that's growing in the faith understands this truth.
- 40:34
- They're not just a babe in Christ anymore. They're able to put on the whole body armor of God, okay?
- 40:40
- Now the body armor of God is a metaphor, right? And so I want us to look at all these different body armor pieces and I wanna talk about it.
- 40:48
- Verse 13, therefore take up the whole armor of God that you may be able to withstand in the evil day and having done all to stand firm.
- 40:59
- Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth. So I just wanna pause real quick.
- 41:04
- Notice the first thing that's said, the belt of truth. And so if you're familiar at all with Roman armor, the belt is what holds everything together.
- 41:15
- Without the belt, the breastplate wouldn't hang on. Everything would just kind of fall off.
- 41:20
- You need this very specific belt to kind of keep it all attached. And so look at the metaphor he's saying.
- 41:27
- He's saying strap on the belt of truth. It's all about the truth at the end of the day, right?
- 41:34
- If we believe a lie, this is all for nothing. Oh, but if it's the truth, if we're talking about things that have eternal purpose and matter, then this is what life is all about right here.
- 41:46
- So the truth is everything. Remember what we said earlier? We could only know the truth if the
- 41:52
- God of truth has revealed to us how things should be. And if you remove that foundational piece of reality, then you can't make sense of this world.
- 42:00
- You can talk about what feels right to you. And as a Christian, I would say, you're actually pretty close, unbeliever, but it's because you're made in God's image.
- 42:07
- That's why you feel that way. I go back to that foundation every time. So Paul says, stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth because truth is everything, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness.
- 42:22
- You remember Delaney was talking about that double imputation earlier that when we put our faith in Christ, our sin gets put on the cross, and in exchange, we receive his righteousness.
- 42:32
- So here, the breastplate of righteousness is covering our heart. Be reminded with the truth of the gospel that you are covered by the righteousness of Christ.
- 42:43
- Isn't that awesome? That's what's going to guard your heart in times of turmoil, when you're going through circumstances that you really feel upset and sad.
- 42:52
- So do you see how this is very important in spiritual warfare as we grow in the faith? The truth is preeminent.
- 42:58
- The belt of truth, put on the breastplate of righteousness, and as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace.
- 43:08
- So you know how I say the gospel of grace all the time? Well, that allows us to also have a peace that surpasses all understanding.
- 43:16
- Romans 5 verse 1 says, therefore having been justified by faith, we have peace with God.
- 43:23
- How is that possible? Well, I have a relationship with the creator of the universe. I no longer have a sin debt because I am justified.
- 43:31
- And if you're justified, you can have peace. True shalom, the way that the Old Testament promised.
- 43:38
- Okay, and so like I said, the Roman armor is symbolic of all of these truths that we're supposed to remind ourself with.
- 43:46
- And so it's talking about the shoes of your feet because we're always on the go, ready to talk about these things with others and remind ourselves the things of the gospel.
- 43:56
- Verse 16, Paul says, in all circumstances, take up the shield of faith with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one.
- 44:06
- I love that. Because if your trust is in the God of truth, then what could
- 44:11
- Satan possibly tempt you with or try to deceive you with if you know what our purposes in life is?
- 44:20
- We know the truth. Remember John's spiritual development? Young men, you abide in the word and you're able to conquer the wicked one, the evil one.
- 44:30
- You see that? So this is talking about someone who's maturing in the faith. So verse 17 says, and take up the helmet of salvation.
- 44:39
- So a lot of people doubt their salvation. 1 John has written to Christians, I write these things to you that you may know that you have eternal life.
- 44:51
- When we doubt our salvation, what do we need to do? We need to strap the helmet of salvation on tighter, realizing, oh,
- 44:58
- I can't lose my salvation because of who God is, because of the grace that I've experienced. We're looking to God's truth and not ourselves and our circumstances.
- 45:08
- So do you see the principle? Over and over again, the body armor is a metaphor to renew our heart and mind with God's truth.
- 45:15
- That's going to equip us in spiritual warfare so we can grow in spiritual maturity.
- 45:22
- So as we begin to wind down, Paul says, take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the
- 45:27
- Spirit, which is the word of God. Remember Jesus in the wilderness? It is written.
- 45:33
- It is written. It is written. Be gone, Satan. And then this is very important for our spiritual walk in verse 18, is prayer.
- 45:42
- Praying at all times in the Spirit with all prayer and supplication. And so that's a byproduct of being a
- 45:51
- Christian. Our spiritual breathing is we're constantly going to the Lord in prayer. Yeah, we can teach one another how to pray the way that Jesus taught us how to, but if you're a child of God, this is something natural, is to pray.
- 46:05
- That's how we have relationship with God. So if you would, turn back with me to 1 John 2.
- 46:12
- Someone help me out. What is spiritual warfare? Spiritual warfare. Who are we warring against?
- 46:20
- What? Someone say it louder for the microphone over there. Satan. Satan, right?
- 46:30
- The kingdom of darkness. That's who we're warring against. And look back at verse 13, the middle part.
- 46:38
- I'm writing to you young men, young women, because you have overcome the evil one.
- 46:43
- Second part of verse 14, I'm writing to you young men because you are strong and the word of God abides in you and you have overcome the evil one.
- 46:54
- Doesn't that sound a lot like putting on the whole body armor of God? Having the word of God in your heart so you may not sin against God.
- 47:02
- So you can be equipped to go to war with the evil one knowing that we have a battle that's already won.
- 47:08
- We already have victory. So last point is we're talking about fathers here.
- 47:14
- Think about the spiritual maturity process, right? Young children, young men, fathers.
- 47:20
- Young people, older people maturing in the faith. And have y 'all met old people that are just kind of curmudgeons?
- 47:28
- They're just really distasteful and they're really set in their ways. Have y 'all ever met someone like that? And you're just like, man, they're cranky.
- 47:35
- Have you ever met people like that? Every old person in Florida. Oh, say it ain't so.
- 47:42
- So yeah, I think on one hand, even those who have lived the
- 47:47
- Christian faith for a very long time need to be reminded of verse 13.
- 47:53
- I am writing to you fathers because you know him who is from the beginning.
- 47:59
- Verse 14. I write to you fathers because you know him who is from the beginning.
- 48:06
- And so my point is even those who have been Christians for a long time, they need to be reminded of those fundamental truths that they were first saved with.
- 48:16
- Remember writing to little children that your sins are forgiven you for his namesake. No matter where you're at in your spiritual growth, that's a truth you need to always day by day needing to be reminded of.
- 48:28
- And I think the positive aspect, someone who's mature in the faith, I think they long to be with their savior more and more.
- 48:39
- Y 'all know the verse that says to live is Christ, to die is gain. As you become older physically and more mature spiritually, you really start longing to be with the
- 48:49
- Lord. It's like, Lord, I've been on this earth for many decades, 80 years I've been walking with Christ, 50 plus years.
- 48:55
- I'm ready to go home. You know what I mean? And to me that's beautiful. And it's not up to us, right, for when we depart from this life to the next.
- 49:05
- But as I'm here, I'm filling my heart and my mind more and more day by day with eternal truths, right?
- 49:13
- And so I really think that that's a principle that we're seeing with fathers. Those who are spiritually mature, they long to be with their savior in eternal glory.
- 49:23
- Those are the things that they spend their remaining days really thinking deeply on. And honestly, all these different principles that we've talked about, young children, young people, older people, it's true for all of us at no matter what stage of life they're at.
- 49:37
- That's really what Pastor Gabe talked about is rather than trying to just dissect what fathers is being distinguished from young men, all of these truths are true for us no matter what.
- 49:48
- Does that make sense? And so with that, I do think
- 49:54
- John here is wanting to encourage his audience. He just got done talking about an old commandment, new commandment, and if you hate your brother, then you're not in the light.
- 50:02
- But let me give you an encouragement. I am writing to Christians. You know who the Lord is. You're forgiven.
- 50:08
- You're covered by the blood of Jesus and all of your sins are forgiven. So let me give you an encouragement before we hit the next portion about do not love the world, right?
