TLP 94: How to Train Your Child to Stay with God

All right, so what's my opinion? Well, let me start by admitting that I'm pretty sure I disagree with most of the people

I respect. Welcome to Truth, Love, Parents, where we use

God's word to become intentional premeditated parents. Here's your host,

A .M. Brewster. I'm really looking forward to today's study. It's gonna be slightly longer though because we're gonna cover a controversial verse from Proverbs.

I also really enjoyed our last episode where Jessica Mayer, a counselor and mother of five, all under the age of 10, helped us understand the necessity of training our children how to work through interpersonal conflicts and avoid tattling.

If you missed it, be sure to listen to episode 93, Tackling Tattling. Now, two shows ago, we discussed

Christian Parenting 101 and learned that our greatest responsibility is to teach our children to fear the Lord and keep his word.

Today, I pray that our discussion will further clarify our understanding of God's word, our goal in parenting, and how to accomplish that goal.

Lastly, today is the final episode of season three. And some of you have asked what the seasons are all about. Well, we decided to break our show into seasons for a couple of reasons.

First, our content isn't truly episodic. We, like Christy, believe every Christian parent should take the time to listen to the entire podcast at least once, if not more.

The seasons encourage that type of listening. Second, as we've grown and are becoming more streamlined in our planning, we've noticed that our content is flowing together nicely and that we can start focusing on certain ideas and principles and commands that tie our standalone episodes and series together within a season.

And last, we love the four natural seasons God's created, and we decided to have four seasons of our own that separate the year into three -month slices.

Now, let me tell you what this doesn't mean. It doesn't mean that you should expect a break between the end of one season and the beginning of another like you do with TV shows.

Some podcasts also do that, but Lord willing, we hope to not take breaks. Now, this is a big commitment on our part.

We desire to continue posting 104 episodes a year. That's twice a week. And as you can imagine, this takes a lot of commitment and work from Team TLP in order to create and record and publish those episodes before we take our holidays and vacations or go out of town or whatever else.

But we do this so your family can be built up and established twice a week, all year, no matter what. So far, we've only failed to publish once since we started a year ago.

It was our 10th episode and we didn't have internet for a week. So, you know, it may happen, but we're gonna work hard so that it won't.

And just for an example, right now, when you're listening to this, I'm actually on a week -long camping trip with the boys from Victory Academy.

And this following Tuesday, I'll be at the Association of Certified Biblical Counselors Conference in Jacksonville, Florida. It's so cool being two places at once.

But this is another really good reason for you to consider supporting TLP with your prayers and finances. This is a faith -based ministry dedicated to serving families all over the globe.

And the more help we get, the more families we can serve and the better job we can do at it. But anyway, let's move past this lengthy intro and talk about our controversial text of the day.

The verse I'm alluding to is Proverbs 22 .6. Many of you know it, and many of you already know why it's controversial.

But for those of you who aren't sure what I'm talking about, let me read the verse and explain the differing opinions. Proverbs 22 .6

says, "'Train up a child in the way he should go. "'Even when he is old, he will not depart from it.'" What I'd like to do now is present the two sides of the argument, explain why

I believe what I believe, and teach you how to parent the way I believe God's calling us to parent in this verse. But first, the opinions.

Okay, so one camp sees this verse as a solid promise. If you train your child to follow Christ, your child will not depart from that path.

Obviously, your child will sin, but their overall trajectory will be toward Christlikeness and maturity. Again, these people believe this is a hard and fast promise.

This group argues that a literal understanding of the text proves it to be true, and if God says something, it will always be true.

The other side of the fence argues that this, as well as other proverbs, are merely proverbial. Merriam -Webster defines proverb as a brief popular saying that gives advice about how people should live, or that expresses a belief that is generally thought to be true.

Based off this definition and their understanding of the proverbs, many people explain that this verse is not a promise, but merely a proverb expressing something that is generally true, meaning that you can train your child to love

God, but there's no guarantee she won't fall from the faith, turn from God, or walk away from the church. Again, they would say this verse is a generally true statement designed to give us hope that if we do our jobs, our kids hopefully will turn out well.

This group also argues from experience that innumerable parents have trained their children in the things of God, but since so many walked away from it, it must not be true all of the time.

All right, so what's my opinion? Well, let me start by admitting that I'm pretty sure I disagree with most of the people

I respect. I've researched this a lot. For example, John MacArthur, a man I praise God for, holds to the belief that this verse is generally true because you can train a child in the way he should go, but there's no guarantee that he won't depart from it.

Well, I disagree. Now, before I continue, recently I called out Joel Osteen for his heretical prosperity gospel.

Please understand this is not me attacking or calling out John MacArthur. I love Dr. MacArthur. I listen to his stuff.

I read his books, and I'd be honored to have him on the show one day. John is a wonderful man of God, and I'm very thankful for the impact

God has had on my life through his ministry. I just wanted to make sure we were clear on that, but we do disagree on this, and that's okay, but let me tell you why we disagree.

I'm gonna point out two ideas that I believe support my belief about this verse. Number one,

I personally have never read a proverb that isn't true all the time. I've read through Proverbs so many times, often reading a chapter of Proverbs a day for many years, and in that time,

I've never read a verse that is true some of the time, but not true at other times unless the verse specifically expresses it.

Now, I'm gonna give you a couple examples of Proverbs that people think fall into the generally true category along with Proverbs 22 .6.

Unfortunately, I do not have the time to talk about why I think these are also promises, but I'm just gonna throw them out there.

Okay, so one of the verses people say is just a proverb, not a promise, is Proverbs 16 .7, which says, when a man's ways please the

Lord, he makes even his enemies to be at peace with him. And Proverbs 26 .4 -5, answer not a fool according to his folly, lest you be like him yourself.

Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own eyes. As a side note, we are going to dedicate a whole show to this concept later because this has a lot to do with our parenting.

So my issue with this position is more than experiential. It's more than grammatical or just a conceptual understanding of the text.

For me, it's about why God would say something in Scripture that's not true all the time. God is so careful in his word choices.

For me, this is a matter of consistency on God's part as a communicator. Now, detractors of my position will likely say that this is, it's in the nature of a proverb to be generally true and God is merely using the genre as it was commonly used.

My only objection to that is human Proverbs will be, by nature, potentially inaccurate. They have to be. We're not perfect.

I think our cultural understanding of Proverbs has been informed by like the ancient Chinese or Benjamin Franklin and other proverbial authors.

But arguing that God's Proverbs have to be generally true, for me, is akin to arguing that since no human can write a perfect book, neither can

God. That's obviously foolish and no one from Dr. MacArthur's position would say that. I understand that.

But by extension, I don't think we can argue that God's Proverbs are generally true simply because man's are.

Also, I believe the biggest reason people like Dr. MacArthur believe what they do is not the consistency of God, the genre of Proverbs, or the grammar of the verse.

I really believe people struggle with accepting this verse as a promise because it appears that there have been parents from the very beginning of time who tried to train their children in the nurture and admonition of the

Lord whose kids rejected God. I believe that observation and those experiences convince people to interpret this verse as only sometimes true.

Here's the ultimate example. God himself trained his people and yet how many times did the nation of Israel and the church turn from him?

Some would argue this example itself is the nail in the coffin for my belief that Proverbs 22 .6 is a promise.

And to be honest, my belief in the consistent communication of God likely won't convince many of you, especially the ones who've tried to train your children in righteousness but got a terrorist instead.

So allow me to present my second argument that Proverbs 22 .6 is a promise. And this point, I believe, will convince you.

It may not even sway you to the belief that all Proverbs are promises, but I think you'll start seeing this one as a promise when we're done.

All right, so let's look at the verse again. Train up a child in the way he should go. Even when he's old, he will not depart from it.

I wanna work backwards through the verse. At the end, we see the promise that when our children are old, they won't depart from the way in which they've been trained.

There are two important words to understand in one grammatical consideration. The important words are these. First of all, depart means exactly what you'd expect.

It means to turn aside. But old is often misunderstood. This Hebrew word does not mean older.

It means aged. If you look it up, every time it's used, it's describing something very old. That's important because we spend so much time teaching our elementary schoolers, and when our kids go astray in their teens, we assume the verse wasn't true.

Honestly, we may not know if our children will stay in the way until they are old, and we may be long gone by then anyway.

Of course, I don't believe we need to get hung up on this word, but I do think it's an interesting observation. Here's the one grammatical consideration.

Again, I don't wanna beat a dead horse, but God is laying this out as a clear conditional promise. In no uncertain terms, he says if you do the first part, even when he is old, he will not depart from it.

All right, number two. Let's continue moving backward through the verse. The next stop on our tour is the phrase in the way he should go.

Literally, this word means according to his way. The first part of the verse could read train up a child according to his way.

The Hebrew word being used here speaks of a literal or figurative road. It's translated nearly 600 times as way, 31 times as toward, 23 times as journey, eight times as manner, and another 53 miscellaneous words.

So why did the English translators translate this word as the way he should go? Well, basically these men who are much smarter than I when it comes to Hebrew believe that the sense of the word in the surrounding context provides an understanding that is best represented by the phrase the way he should go.

They're telling us that here the word doesn't merely refer to any way, but that it refers to a specific way, a good way.

This is another reason I believe my position is valid. If the word merely meant teach a kid to do whatever he wants and he'll do it all his life, no one would suggest it was only generally true.

They'd be saying, yeah, that's a promise. In fact, we'd all wonder why the verse was there in the first place. Moving on,

I believe the generally accepted English translation is valid. We're discussing a mode of living that is Christ honoring and good.

And now as we move backward, we find the word child. This word also is what you'd expect.

It can be used of an infant, to an adolescent, to a young man. Honestly, I believe this truth applies to all people of every age, but here the

Lord's focusing on parents and their children who are still at home and under their authority. Okay, so far we've seen what we expected to see.

We're talking about pointing a child in a God -glorifying direction so that even when he is old and gray, he will still be going in that same direction.

So the last phrase we need to look at is at the beginning of the verse, and it's train up. In fact, this word,

I believe, is the most important one in the whole text and will revolutionize our parenting if we understand it and know how to do it.

So you ready? Okay, the Hebrew word here is interesting. It's only used four times in the whole

Bible, and three of those times it's translated dedicated, but here is the only time it's translated train up.

Consider that for a moment. This word only used four times in the Bible, and in this verse, it's the only time that it's translated this way.

The three times the word's translated dedicated, it's referring to the dedication of an inanimate object, specifically a house or the temple.

You see, something inanimate can be dedicated for a special purpose without it arguing about its use or trying to do something else.

The Old Testament temple wasn't gonna refuse to be God's temple and offer its services to Dagon. But the one time this word is used of a human being, it's translated train up.

I don't know about your church, but in the past, churches had these things called baby dedications. The mom and the dad would take their bundle of joy onto the platform, share the vital statistics, and the pastor would dedicate the child to God.

Thankfully, my former church changed this practice and stopped saying that they were going to dedicate the baby. Instead, they said they wanted to dedicate the dad and the mom to the purpose of rearing their child in the

Lord. I believe this was a much wiser move because the parents chose to dedicate themselves to that purpose.

How many babies were dedicated to the Lord that grew to reject God? Here's my point. This word is complicated because its meaning in this one verse is unique in the entirety of Scripture.

But it's a right understanding of the phrase train up that will unlock our understanding of parenting.

You see, the English word train has a fantastic translation. Please understand, notice that this verse doesn't say teach a child or instruct a child.

Here's why. I can teach without my student learning. I've been a teacher for over 10 years and I've taught hundreds of kids in that time and I guarantee you not all of them learned.

But the word train has a completely different connotation. If I told you I were a classically trained violinist, you would understand a few things about me right away.

You would immediately assume, A, I know how to play the violin, and B, I know how to play it well. So you ask me to play it for you, but I can barely squeak out a pathetic rendition of Twinkle Twinkle.

So then you ask me, I thought you were a classically trained violinist, and I reply, well, my teacher taught me everything

I needed to know and do, I just, you know, never practiced. There's not a single person listening to my voice today who would agree that I should consider myself a classically trained violinist.

The same goes for someone who claims to have had martial arts training, someone who's training for the

Olympics, and someone who says they're a trained surgeon. The words train and training and train assume a participation and even an element of completion on the part of the student.

Again, I can teach without there being an assumption that the student learned. I cannot train without there being an assumption that the student was trained themselves, because training means something very different than teaching does.

Again, teaching is one -sided, but the idea of training requires that the student actually learn the material and be able to use it.

Now, let's look back at our verse. Train up a child in the way he should go. Even when he's old, he will not depart from it.

If we couple what we learned today with what we discussed in Christian Parenting 101, we could say, train your children to fear the

Lord and walk in his truth. And if he heeds your training, practices it, and becomes proficient in fearing

God and walking in his truth, even when he is old, he will not depart from it. To illustrate this principle,

I'd like us to read 2 Timothy 3, 14 through 17. Here, Paul is writing to his young protege,

Timothy, and he says, but as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it and how from childhood you have been acquainted with sacred writings which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.

All scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.

Paul's instructing Timothy to persevere in the truth of God he received and believed as a child.

Apparently, his parents acquainted him with the sacred writings which were able to lead him to salvation through faith in Christ.

Clearly, we're talking about the Old Testament here, not just other writings. I believe this passage helps us understand the basics of what this training is.

First, Timothy's training started as a child. This Greek word refers to a very young child, even an infant.

In fact, it generally refers to a newborn, but it can also refer to an unborn child. What's the takeaway?

Well, it is never too early to start training your children. And though it can never be too late,

I tell you what, let's not risk it, start as soon as you can. Second, we see what he was trained in.

He was acquainted with the sacred writings that held the message of the gospel. Paul then takes an additional step to unfold the beautiful doctrine of inspiration in order to assure

Timothy of the power of the Bible. Because it's perfectly inspired by God, it's useful for teaching, reproof, correction, and training in righteousness.

We'll study those four amazing words at a later date, but please realize that this isn't just referring to a parenting manual written by Dr.

Spock, okay? This isn't the four love languages. This isn't any invention of man. The holy scriptures are the only thing that's able to make the man of God complete and equip him for every good work.

Even our youngest children must be acquainted with the fear of the Lord and the truth of God's word.

And it's never too early to start training your children about the Bible. Teaching them to memorize scripture is so important as well.

And it's never too early to get them involved in service and ministry. But here's the kicker.

Many people are acquainted with the Bible and have had it used to teach, reprove, correct, and train them, and yet they still reject

God. And this is why. They were taught, but because of their lack of participation, they weren't trained.

Now, I know we're going long here, but stick with me. This is so important. Look again at what Paul said to and about Timothy.

Timothy was urged to continue in what he learned. This isn't merely a passive listening or acquisition of knowledge.

And this isn't something Timothy's parents could do for him. He had to consciously choose to continue in truth.

Also notice that it was said that Timothy firmly believed the truth he received through faith in Christ Jesus.

This point is so important, I really mustn't rush over it. So basically, I'm going to discuss this in greater detail during our

Mearest Christianity series coming up here soon. But for now, realize that faith is a decisive choice to accept and act upon the truth we receive.

Only by Timothy's participation can it be said that he will continue in what he learned and then become a man of God who's complete and equipped for every good work.

I don't know about you, but that sounds an awful lot like even when he's old, he will not depart from it. And this is what we want for our kids.

Listen, please, get it out of your head that you're simply in your children's lives to communicate truth, that they are free to take or leave.

It's true that you can't change their hearts, but if you're actually training your children, you're going to have expectations for their performance.

Think of the difference between teaching your kids to cook and training them to cook. And you can't say I'm playing games with semantics.

Really, you can't. You would easily say to your three -year -old that you taught him to cook, and no one would expect him to do a good job.

But if you told someone you're training your child to cook, they'd expect your kid can make something. Now, I've already taken a lot of your time.

Again, I understand that, and I appreciate your patience, but I want to get a little bit more practical. Let's just take one of Deuteronomy's big two, fearing the

Lord and walking in his truth. To be honest, they're synonymous. You can't truly do one without doing the other, but here's the difference between teaching and training.

A parent who teaches will tell their children they need to fear the Lord. They'll likely even model it for their kids.

They'll also tell their children how they are to live and point them to God's statutes and commandments as rules for living.

A parent who trains their kids will do all the same teaching but will also provide opportunities for assessment.

Just like a violin teacher who assigns practice regimens and opportunities to perform, like recitals, a training parent is going to not simply hand out information and pat themselves on the back for doing their jobs.

They're gonna require output from the child. They're gonna push for investment. They're gonna take the child by the hand and walk them through the application of the teaching they received.

When the ambassador parent's child doesn't obey, we're not simply going to give them a consequence and remind them what the rule was.

We're gonna take it back to the root of the issue. Here's a good example. So we're watching our friend's dog and earlier today, my children were asked to care for her and instead of obeying like they should, it turned into an argument between the two of them of who was gonna do what.

They were crying, fighting and until my wife stepped in, the dog wasn't being cared for. A few minutes later, my wife is in the room with me and the kids came in and asked to play with our new bunny.

My wife says, I'm not even certain we should keep the bunny. If caring for the dog was that much conflict, maybe we should give it away.

Now, by the way, if you understand the broader context of what was going on in my family at that time, my wife's comments weren't overblown or too dramatic.

Don't judge her, she was doing a great job. I actually agreed with her at the moment. However, hearing all of this,

I turned to my kids and asked this question. Why do you two hate your mother? Now, as you can imagine,

I received astonished looks. My daughter said, we don't hate mommy, but I reminded her that if you love me, keep my commandments.

Mommy gave them a task, but they each love themselves too much. Instead of quickly, sweetly, and completely doing what mom asked, they devolved into bickering, selfish, disobedient children.

The real issue wasn't only that they didn't love mommy, but that in that moment, they loved themselves more than God.

What my kids didn't need was a class on how to take care of a dog. They didn't need a reminder about obedience.

What they needed was a glimpse into their selfish hearts. They needed to see what the fruit of their lives said about the roots of their lives.

They needed to fear the Lord and they needed to have someone show that to them and drive them back to that truth and hopefully lead them to the place where they would repent and then get back into actively trying to fear the

Lord themselves. Here's the point of today's show. Proverbs 22 .6

is a promise. If you train your children in the fear of the Lord and the truth of his word, your children are going to choose to participate in that training by learning what

God teaches, believing it and continuing in it. And then yes, they will not depart from it because you can't say you trained them if they weren't trained.

Now, this is a branch of another doctrine called the perseverance of the saints or the preservation of the saints. Once saved, we cannot lose our salvation, but we also can't be born again and remain stagnant.

Our justification is going to work in us, sanctifying us, which is a process that changes us into the image of Christ from glory to glory.

Romans 8 .30 says, and those whom he predestined, he also called, and those whom he called, he also justified, and those whom he justified, he also glorified.

The stage between justification and glorification is sanctification, where we move from our lost state to a growing in Christ likeness state to eventually a perfected in Christ state.

This is the necessary end of everyone who is a genuine child of God. Now again, I know I took a lot of time and I went through that very quickly, so please take advantage of our episode notes and transcript linked at truthloveparent .com.
