“More Recommendations
for the Best in CHRISTIAN LITERATURE”
- 00:04
- Live from the historic parsonage of the 19th century gospel minister George Norcross in downtown
- 00:10
- Carlisle, Pennsylvania, it's Iron Sharpens Iron. This is a radio platform in which pastors,
- 00:23
- Christian scholars, and theologians address the burning issues facing the church and the world today.
- 00:31
- Proverbs chapter 27 verse 17 tells us iron sharpens iron so one man sharpens another.
- 00:38
- Matthew Henry said that in this passage we are cautioned to take heed with whom we converse and directed to have in view in conversation to make one another wiser and better.
- 00:50
- It is our hope that this goal will be accomplished over the next two hours and we hope to hear from you the listener with your own questions and now here's your host
- 00:59
- Chris Arnzen. Good afternoon
- 01:09
- Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, Lake City, Florida, and the rest of humanity living on the planet earth.
- 01:15
- We're listening via live streaming at ironsharpensironradio .com. This is
- 01:20
- Chris Arnzen, your host of Iron Sharpens Iron Radio, wishing you all a happy Thursday on this 18th day of June 2020.
- 01:30
- And I'm thrilled to have back on the program someone who has probably meant more to me and my
- 01:39
- Christian life over the last 30 years or so than anyone else, had a greater impact on me even as a lost person before coming to Christ.
- 01:52
- I'm speaking of Michael A. Gaydosh, the man who would at some point become my very first pastor in the 1980s, who would immerse me in the waters of baptism, and then years later would become founder and director of Solid Ground Books, Solid Ground Christian Books, whose website is solid -ground -books .com.
- 02:16
- And today we are going to be addressing a tribute to Phil Roberts and Tentmaker Publications, and we'll also be hearing from Mike more recommendations for the best in Christian literature.
- 02:29
- And it's my honor and privilege to welcome you back to Iron Sharpens Iron Radio, Michael A.
- 02:35
- Gaydosh. Well, thank you, Chris. It's a pleasure always to be with you. It's been a while since I've been able to speak with you.
- 02:42
- It's very difficult. I have to stand in line, wait my turn. I know all these world -famous guests that you have storming the stage, but I'm very thankful that you were able to slip me in here, and I hope that this will be a beneficial time for your listeners.
- 03:03
- Well, I'm going to immediately give our listeners the email address that they can use to send in questions of their own, if they have any.
- 03:11
- Again, ChrisArnzen at gmail .com, C -H -R -I -S -A -R -N -Z -E -N at gmail .com,
- 03:20
- and as always, please give us at least your first name, your city and state of residence, and your country of residence if you live outside the
- 03:27
- USA. Please only remain anonymous if your question involves a personal and private matter.
- 03:34
- Well, Mike, for those of our listeners who are unfamiliar with Phil Roberts and Tentmaker Ministries, or publications,
- 03:42
- I should say, why don't you let our listeners know about them and why you are paying a tribute to them today?
- 03:50
- Well, Phil Roberts has been involved in publishing now for, I believe, around 30 years, and he began it as literally a tentmaker ministry to allow him to be able to pastor, and he began in a very small way, but has ended up publishing, printing, and publishing many, many books, about as many as I have.
- 04:16
- The difference is most of the titles he's done are hardcover volumes and just really, really first class.
- 04:25
- He's a wonderful man. The main reason for the tribute right now, or the focus being on tentmaker publications at Solid Ground, is that for the last several years,
- 04:38
- I think the last five years, Phil has been struggling with Parkinson's, and he has said that his handwriting is now impossible, typing is difficult, among other things, and he also has severe back pain, which makes standing and walking difficult, and of course, in publishing, you have to be able to carry things, and so he has really gone through a challenging physical time for the past five years, and has slowly been moving out of the publishing business.
- 05:15
- He still has a pretty decent number of titles left, but one of the things that I've done to try to help him is
- 05:21
- I have been purchasing from him the last copies of many of his titles that he's had available for years.
- 05:29
- Some of the titles that I have the last copies of are books like the
- 05:35
- Analytical Commentary on Romans by John Brown. There are just two copies now left, 1
- 05:42
- Thessalonians and 2 Thessalonians Commentary by John Lilly. There are just two copies now that are left, and several others as well.
- 05:51
- I just recently picked up all the remaining copies of The Penitent, which is an exposition of Psalm 51 by James Morgan, and I also picked up from him the last copies of Christ on the
- 06:04
- Cross, which is an exposition, an incredible exposition by John Stevenson of Psalm 22, and I've just been reading that lately myself, the one on Christ on the
- 06:17
- Cross by Stevenson, and I can understand when you're reading it, you can understand why Spurgeon considered it to be, if not the best, one of the very best ever on Psalm 22.
- 06:29
- And so those are just a sample of a few of the things that I have available, and I have quite a few in stock right now, so it will help
- 06:39
- Phil a lot, and it will help me to be able to cover the cost, and it has cost a lot.
- 06:45
- Unfortunately now the shipping cost to get books from the UK to the US has really, really gone up a lot, and that makes it more and more challenging in terms of being able to get these books, but Phil and I have been working together for years.
- 07:01
- He's been a very gracious man, a very easy man to work with, and I'm really thrilled to be able to help support his work in this way.
- 07:09
- How did you first become familiar with Phil and Tentmaker Publications? You know,
- 07:14
- Phil, Chris, I don't remember. I really don't. It's been many years. I could trace back and see how many years.
- 07:22
- It's been at least 15 years. I don't know if it was through someone else, if it was through RHB.
- 07:28
- I really don't remember. I just know that we've gotten close. We've spoken on the phone many, many times.
- 07:35
- We just spoke on the phone today. He was really thrilled to find out that we were going to be doing this today.
- 07:41
- He was rather shocked, actually, and he may even be listening right now. I'm not sure, but he is a fine man.
- 07:49
- He and his wife have been serving literally in a tentmaker ministry, and that is the reason why he has titled his work that.
- 07:59
- From what you've said, he apparently has dedicated this publication ministry to the
- 08:07
- Best in Reformed literature. Yes. Yes, he has. He has also done some works by the
- 08:16
- Calvinistic Methodists. He has some really, really fine works on the lives of the early
- 08:22
- Methodist preachers. He really has been trying to move those recently, and I'm actually helping him.
- 08:32
- I purchased the last three sets of the lives of the early Methodist preachers. I've already sold one of the three, so I only have two left.
- 08:40
- I also have picked up some of the volumes by the Oxford Methodists and by Tyreman, which is an excellent work as well.
- 08:51
- But other than those few on Methodists, he has been doing
- 08:58
- Reformed men, absolutely, commentaries, theological works.
- 09:04
- He has a few by Octavius Winslow. Unfortunately, a couple of those are now out of print, and I have the last remaining copies of Winslow's work on Atonement and the
- 09:16
- Cross. He does have some copies of the Lord's Prayer, the exposition of the
- 09:22
- Lord's Prayer by Winslow. So, they're not all Puritans, but they are good, solid
- 09:29
- Reformed men. Well, you know, when people, and this is likely a minority today, but they can be a vocal minority of people who mock those of us who love good
- 09:49
- Christian books by great Christian men, and they say that they may even accuse us slanderously of denying the sufficiency of Scripture or something.
- 10:02
- And what I like to tell folks like that is, if you had a time machine and you could transport back into our day the finest preachers that have ever lived for the last 2 ,000 years, wouldn't you do it to hear them speak?
- 10:21
- And obviously, the answer would be yes, of course. Well, that's what their books are. It's not like we're adding to the
- 10:31
- Scripture traditions of men, although, of course, no extra -biblical book is inerrant or divinely inspired, but at the same time, no preacher is preaching a sermon that is inerrant or divinely inspired.
- 10:47
- And this is the way God has enabled us to have, even centuries after they lived and died, as it were, the preachers of the finest and most powerful preachers, at least of the last several centuries, that we have the ability to invite right into our own living rooms.
- 11:16
- I agree with you, and I think that the people who would say, the Bible only, the Bible only, in many ways, they're really...
- 11:24
- I respect what they're saying, and I appreciate what they're saying, and certainly, we must make certain that we never allow any human teacher, any one human instrument, to cause us to neglect the
- 11:40
- Scriptures. We must be continually reading the Scriptures. We need to be spending time in the
- 11:46
- Scriptures, directly interacting with the text, and if we have the knowledge, even with the original text,
- 11:53
- Greek and Hebrew. Most people don't have that ability, but those who have been trained have an ability to some point.
- 12:01
- I have more of an understanding than most people do, but I think that we have the opportunity to be able to, like you said, and I think you said it well, you have the opportunity to be able to read the best of the best, and I'll give you an example,
- 12:17
- Chris. You know Spurgeon sermons that have been written in the
- 12:26
- Metropolitan Tabernacle? Yes. And there are like 60 some volumes, and people have been reading them for years.
- 12:33
- Well, actually, the volumes are not exactly the same words that were preached from the pulpit, but there was a process that he went through after preaching where he had a man that took down every word, he did it in shorthand, and then he wrote it out, and he handed it to Spurgeon, and Spurgeon would then have to go over the galley of that entire sermon, and he would, what he would do is go through and he'd cross out certain words or phrases and he'd replace them with what he felt was a better choice of words for that, and so in reality, we have even that which is, by reading those sermons, we have something even better than the people who heard him originally had because it gave him an opportunity after the fact to go back and say something maybe a little bit better or maybe be a little clearer than he was when he actually delivered the message.
- 13:40
- And so, you know, I think to, like you say, to ignore the gifts that God has given to the
- 13:47
- Church. The ascended Christ, Ephesians chapter 4, has given gifts to men, and some gifts are pastors and teachers.
- 13:55
- And so to not read other godly men from the past, especially godly men upon whom the
- 14:05
- Holy Spirit clearly was resting demonstrated by their godly life and by the fruit of their ministry, the fruit of conversions on the one hand and the fruit of growth in grace on the other.
- 14:21
- And so to ignore those gifts that God has given to the Church isn't wisdom. It's actually, it's despising the gift of God.
- 14:29
- And so I believe that it is important for us not to ignore the Scriptures ever, not to read books over the
- 14:36
- Scriptures ever, but to read books that have been written by men who believe the
- 14:42
- Bible, every word of it, and who were used by God, gifted by God to be able to communicate the
- 14:50
- Word of God in a way that opens the Scriptures up to us. That's really what the reading of good
- 14:57
- Christian books is about. In fact, you just reminded me of something that took place during the back -and -forth conversations that occurred before a debate that I recently aired on this program.
- 15:13
- And one of the debaters who was opposing the view that I would hold to be true and the view that my guest,
- 15:24
- Sam Frost, was defending, he said before the debate that Sam's opponent said,
- 15:33
- I don't want any creeds or confessions or the opinions of men to be involved in this debate.
- 15:43
- I just want us to open our Bibles and have this debate solely on what the
- 15:49
- Bible says. And Sam very wisely responded, you mean you want it to feature only what you and I think the
- 15:59
- Bible says? We're not going to just read the Bible out loud. We're going to be attempting to exegete it, and therefore our own opinions are going to be a part of that.
- 16:11
- And it really, when people have that mindset, it's not only denying gifts from God, it's really the height of arrogance to think you don't need teachers, you don't need people that have perhaps spent many, many, many more hours of their lives basically immersing themselves into the
- 16:38
- Word and even into the original languages and learning things that we would never learn if God doubled our lifespan.
- 16:49
- Well yeah, and again, God has given differing gifts to different people. And I remember, and you shared my frustration when
- 16:59
- Mr. Camping would talk to people about only reading the Bible. And yet and yet he would always tell them to do what?
- 17:10
- Write in and we'll send you a book by him. I wrote, and I would always get so frustrated
- 17:16
- I'd say, well Mr. Camping how inconsistent can you be? You tell people not to read anything but the
- 17:21
- Bible but then, well then you also have to read what I have to say about it. And I remember
- 17:27
- I had a meeting with him one time, several years ago with Bob Cameron, Bill Shishko, and I and I can remember us saying to him at one point
- 17:36
- I said, you do realize that you are the first person in the history of the church to interpret that passage in that way.
- 17:44
- And I said, does that not give you pause? And his answer was
- 17:50
- I don't know why God chose to give that information to me and no one else. Well, once a person responds that way you realize, you know what you can't even have a conversation anymore.
- 18:03
- Well it reminds me of someone who will remain nameless who was a disciple of Harold Camping who used to visit
- 18:12
- Grace Reformed Baptist Church of Long Island and Merrick and even
- 18:18
- Calvary Baptist Church of Amityville before that where you also pastored. This is before Mr.
- 18:24
- Camping declared that the church was the enemy of Christ and he permitted his followers to visit and join churches although most of them never joined churches they just bounced around from church to church and this one individual pulled me over aside after the worship service was over.
- 18:45
- He was standing in the northex of the church and he said, you know what I don't like about your church?
- 18:50
- I said, what's that? Well, when sermons are being preached, they are always adding the words of men like Charles Spurgeon and George Whitfield and Jonathan Edwards and John Calvin and Martin Luther.
- 19:03
- Why don't they just stick to the Bible and Mr. Camping? I said, did you hear what you just said?
- 19:10
- What part of the canon did Mr. Camping write? Well, I think that the balance it has to be struck and that is the key and I do believe that the ministry that God has given me through Solid Ground and Phil Roberts through Tentmakers is to bring solid proven literature that God's hand has rested upon in the past and bring it back into the present to give the
- 19:42
- Spirit of God an opportunity to use that again in the present day and we have both,
- 19:49
- Phil and I, have both seen that happen again and again in the work of the Spirit of God at work.
- 19:57
- In fact, I don't think he would mind me telling the story that he shared with me recently about the lives of the
- 20:04
- Methodists. He and his son had had a bit of a row, as they would say, his teenage son and he ended up giving his son an assignment to do to typeset the three volumes of the lives of the early
- 20:24
- Methodist preachers. Well, apparently, that was a life -changing experience for his son and his son was shortly after converted and is actually now apparently a very highly recognized theologian and I was just amazed at how
- 20:45
- God used that as a father, reaching out to his son, just giving him a task to do, probably to earn some money, keep him busy and lo and behold, as he started to read the lives of these early
- 20:59
- Methodist preachers the Spirit of God did something in him and so those volumes of which we only have two sets left now those are very special in fact,
- 21:11
- Phil shared with me that a year later from the time they had this very serious fight a year later at Christmas Phil gave his son a gift copy a leather -bound edition of that newly typeset three volumes of the early
- 21:30
- Methodist preaching and Phil just talked about what an amazing work of God that took place and what happened in that full year from one
- 21:42
- Christmas to the next so obviously those are particularly precious volumes to him and one of the other things that's interesting about what you and Phil Roberts and others who do what you do are able to do to bless the body of Christ is that you have discovered some men of God from the past sometimes several centuries, sometimes even older Reformation period, 15th, 16th century who in our day and age are obscure names that most of us have never heard of and you have brought their writings back into print so that their legacy can live on through their writings being revived and being brought back into print when they might have just dissolved the pages of their books falling to pieces because of exposure to the weather and all that and becoming dust and forgotten forever and that's one of the things
- 23:00
- I've always appreciated about what you do is that you don't only focus on the so -called celebrities of the
- 23:07
- Christian past and present, because you do publish contemporary men as well but you have discovered some real valuable or should
- 23:18
- I even say invaluable gems that are written by men that the vast majority of even well -read and very learned
- 23:30
- Reformed men of the 21st century have never heard of exactly and I think that in fact one of those is the man
- 23:38
- Thomas Moore and the book Counsels and Thoughts and I that book has just really been an amazing book and how
- 23:54
- God has used that book in the lives of so many people Counsels and Thoughts on the
- 24:01
- Spiritual Life of Believers I want to read something I just got last night one of my customers sent me a text and he had a picture of Counsels and Thoughts in his hand and this is what he said to me
- 24:18
- Sir, I have read this twice since I bought it from you a few months ago I've been a
- 24:23
- Christian for 25 years, have read hundreds and hundreds of mostly Reformed and Puritan books this may be the best book
- 24:32
- I have ever read it is rich beyond words Moore's writing flows it is packed with so much good theology and even more comfort
- 24:42
- I want to thank you for making this beautiful addition I plan to be continually reading this book for the rest of my pilgrimage
- 24:49
- I will try to convince all my Christian friends to buy this from you and I actually got ordered this morning he must have gotten on it right away because I got some orders this morning for it and do you have a couple more minutes or do we need to take a break?
- 25:06
- No, we have about 6 minutes before we need to take a break this is the perfect time to introduce this then
- 25:12
- Thomas Moore was completely unknown to me when I published him back in,
- 25:19
- I believe, November and you have to make clear this is not the Roman Catholic martyr in the era of King Henry VIII or the
- 25:28
- Australian Reformed minister No, this man was from England he was from London and he published this book in 1882 what happened for the first 6 months we had no idea and nobody seemed to have any idea who he was and about a month ago
- 25:56
- I got a phone call and for the first 3 minutes I couldn't place who it was
- 26:01
- I knew the voice I knew the person well but I couldn't remember who it was but he was going on and on about having discovered who
- 26:13
- Thomas Moore was and then finally it dawned on me it was Tom Nettles and it was funny because right after I realized who it was he caught his breath for the first time in the first 3 minutes and said, oh by the way, this is
- 26:27
- Tom Nettles I said well I said
- 26:33
- Tom, I know, I just finally realized who it was and then he just said I'm so sorry, I'm just so excited about this what had happened is
- 26:42
- I had given him a copy of Moore's book at a conference that we were at together in January in Mississippi and I gave it to him at the very first session on the first night on Thursday and I didn't say anything true about it for Thursday or Friday but then
- 26:56
- Saturday as we were getting towards the end of the conference he was passing through where my books were and I said, hey
- 27:02
- Tom, have you had a chance to dip into the book yet? and he paused and looked at me and he goes, Mike, that book is amazing and so I was just so encouraged and well then that was it and then all of a sudden
- 27:18
- I get this phone call from him and he was so excited because he had found out who Thomas Moore was and the way he found out he was doing some research in London for a biography that he was completing on Spurgeon a small biography and one of the things that he had done he had gone into the archives and he found these volumes of testimonies that were written by the elders of the church and it turned out and he learned this as he was preparing for his book it turned out that Spurgeon had so many people that were being converted and wanting to join the church from the very earliest years that he ended up coming up with the idea of having his elders sit and listen to the testimonies of people ask them questions and get them prepared to be able to either be baptized or if they were already baptized to have them meet with Spurgeon to have them confirm to become members well as he was going through this he started noticing the name because the elders would all sign their names after they would do the testimonies and he started to see this name
- 28:32
- Thomas Moore coming up again and again and when he first was seeing it he was thinking who is this?
- 28:38
- he said I know that name but who is it? well then finally it dawned on him it's got to be the same man spelled the same way
- 28:49
- M -O -O -R and it turns out he was an elder in Spurgeon's church from the earliest years from the early days and we have found a book that had been published just a few years ago entitled
- 29:07
- Wonders of Grace subtitled Original Testimonies of Converts During Spurgeon's Early Years well it turns out that there were some 1500 converts that wrote that the testimonies were written by the elders in those first years the first 6 or 7 years well they selected 138 of them and incorporated them into this book titled
- 29:33
- Wonders of Grace as Tom was going through the book he noticed again and again the name
- 29:39
- Thomas Moore so I was so excited I got a hold of a copy of it
- 29:44
- I started looking and sure enough the very first testimony that they have recorded in the
- 29:49
- Park Street Chapel was recorded by Thomas Moore and the last one that they had from that early series was also recorded by Thomas Moore and so it really began to cause the light to go on and I said that's where this man got the wisdom that's where this man got that sensitivity to the struggles of Christians and in many ways
- 30:12
- Chris it reminds you of Ichabod Spencer and Pastors Sketches and how he dealt with people he dealt face to face with people who were struggling with assurance and were struggling with this particular sin and that's where Moore was trained that's where he was prepared he sat under the ministry of Spurgeon for all those years and he also had the privilege of being able to listen to the testimonies and not just listen to the testimonies but they would actually many times meet with them like Spencer would do many times because sometimes they were struggling with assurance and they weren't sure if they were
- 30:49
- Christians and so the elders would literally work with them sometimes for weeks sometimes for months before they would actually recommend them to move on to meet with Spurgeon so that was just a tremendous revelation and Tom Nettles is the one who finally uncovered the identity of Thomas Moore Yes and when
- 31:12
- I first interviewed you on Thomas Moore neither of us knew who he was other than he had written this volume this is before you had the encounter with Tom Nettles Oh absolutely it was absolutely because as I said for 6 months when people would ask me who is this man
- 31:31
- I would just say I don't know we have no idea we had people looking all throughout the
- 31:36
- UK and everyone said the same thing I don't know I don't know who he is we have no record of who he is finally when
- 31:46
- Tom discovered in the archives and then in the book
- 31:52
- Wonders of Grace which I now have copies and your customers can order them from me as well as they can order copies of Councils and Thoughts as well as my very encouraging customer shared last night as I was reading the best book
- 32:11
- I've ever read this may be the best book I've ever read Rich Beyond Words and Ichabod Spencer is another one of those virtually unknown names at least in the 21st century unknown who might have been known in his day very well but you have helped revive the legacy of somebody that might have been forever forgotten yes and the interesting thing about that and this is often the case people often will ask me how did you discover this person how did you discover this book well that book
- 32:47
- Ichabod Spencer's Pastor Sketches it was actually a missionary David Vaughn in France who actually discovered the book and he told
- 32:57
- Steve Martin who was his pastor at the time in Georgia and Steve is the one who contacted me about it and it was so was
- 33:08
- David Vaughn to Steve Martin to me and then I started to read it and realized how good it was and that became the first book that I published at Solid Ground in 2001
- 33:19
- Praise God well we have to go to our first break right now and perhaps when we return you could highlight a few more of the publications that Tentmaker Publications have made available that you are now going to be offering through Solid Ground Christian Books and also perhaps we could remind our listeners to pray for Phil Roberts now that he is retiring and so on but if anybody has a question of your own you can send it to ChrisArnzen at gmail .com

- Maybe you've had to close your doors for good. The good news, you thought, was that you purchased business interruption insurance as a part of your business liability policy with a major insurance company who told you they are a good neighbor or that you would be in good hands.
- 39:41
- You filed a claim only to be told that it was denied due to the pandemic exclusion clause.
- 39:47
- The pandemic exclusion? Since 2006, most insurance companies added this clause to enable them to deny your income loss claims in the event of a worldwide pandemic.

- 41:39
- Grace Church at Franklin is an independent, autonomous body of believers, which strives to clearly declare the whole counsel of God as revealed in Scripture through the person and work of our

- 42:45
- Hi, this is John Sampson, pastor of King's Church in Peoria, Arizona, taking a moment of your day to talk about Chris Arnson and the
- 42:54
- Iron Sharpens Iron podcast. I consider Chris a true friend and a man of high integrity. He's a skilled interviewer who's not afraid to ask the big penetrating questions while always defending the key doctrines of the
- 43:06
- Christian faith. I've always been happy to point people to this podcast knowing it's one of the very few safe places on the internet where folk won't be led astray.
- 43:15
- I believe this podcast needs to be heard far and wide. This is a day of great spiritual compromise, and yet God has raised
- 43:22
- Chris up for just such a time. And knowing this, it's up to us as members of the Body of Christ to stand with such a ministry in prayer and in finances.
- 43:31
- I'm pleased to do so and would like to ask you to prayerfully consider joining me in supporting
- 43:36
- Iron Sharpens Iron financially. Would you consider sending either a one -time gift or even becoming a regular monthly partner with this ministry?
- 43:44
- I know it would be a huge encouragement to Chris if you would. All the details can be found at ironsharpensironradio .com

- This is Chris Armsden. If you just tuned us in today, our guest for both hours with about a little less than 90 minutes to go is
- 44:06
- Michael A. Gaydosch, founder and director of Solid Ground Christian Books, whose website is solid -ground -books .com.
- 44:15
- We have been paying tribute to Phil Roberts and Tentmaker Publications, and we're also going to be hearing more recommendations for the best in Christian literature.
- 44:24
- If you have a question of your own, our email address is chrisarmsden at gmail .com. chrisarmsden at gmail .com.
- 44:32
- Give us your first name at least, your city and state of residence, and your country of residence if you live outside the
- 44:37
- USA, and you are going to start highlighting some of the Tentmaker Publications that you have available to provide to your own customers now, and then we'll move on to perhaps some more
- 44:51
- Solid Ground Christian Book titles. Yes. Tentmaker has done so many books that are great quality.
- 45:00
- I already shared the one, Christ on the Cross, by John Stevenson. That is a book that is just so rich.
- 45:08
- This is what Spurgeon said about Stevenson's Christ on the Cross. He says, Exceedingly precious in its unveiling of the
- 45:15
- Redeemer's sorrows, we have derived personal spiritual benefit from the perusal of this gracious exposition, and are unable to judge it critically.
- 45:25
- One of the things I appreciate about what Stevenson does is he takes Psalm 22 and he divides it.
- 45:30
- The first half of the Psalm, or up to verse 21, is entitled Christ on the
- 45:36
- Cross in Darkness. And then from verse 21b to verse 31 at the end, it's
- 45:44
- Christ on the Cross in Light. And he talks about how this one
- 45:49
- Psalm actually takes you through, all the way through the sufferings of Christ to the very end, when he is able to say it is finished.
- 45:59
- And I'm just, I couldn't say enough about this. And I just purchased the last 12 copies, that's all we have left, 12 copies of this.
- 46:10
- It's a beautiful hardcover volume by Stevenson. It's over 300 pages of exposition on Psalm 22.
- 46:20
- Another one is the Penitent, an exposition of the 51st
- 46:25
- Psalm by Reverend James Morgan of Belfast, Ireland. And he did this, these were sermons that he preached in Belfast in 1854.
- 46:40
- And he has, he walks you through the entire Psalm, beginning with the subject of the
- 46:48
- Backslider, which is his introductory message, then he has the Plea, verse 1, the
- 46:54
- Desire, verse 2, the Confession, verse 3, the Aggravation, verse 4,
- 47:01
- Original Sin, verse 5, Regeneration, verse 6, the Atonement, 7,
- 47:06
- Joy, 8, Importunity, Desertion, Usefulness, Praise, the
- 47:12
- Broken Heart, Zeal, and Hope. And it's a powerful, powerful work.
- 47:18
- Morgan also did an outstanding commentary on 1 John, which we also have from Tentmakers.
- 47:27
- I also have just purchased the remaining six copies of Paul Bain's commentary on Ephesians.
- 47:36
- And it's a powerful commentary. Bain was a Puritan. And it's a powerful commentary, verse by verse, going through the entire commentary.
- 47:45
- It's filled with application, exposition, just an extremely powerful commentary on the entire book of Ephesians.
- 47:57
- There's also a volume by James Hamilton. In fact, Phil asked me to really push
- 48:03
- Hamilton. James Hamilton was a contemporary of Spurgeon. Have you heard of Hamilton, Chris?
- 48:10
- Actually, I have not. Yeah, he was born in 1814.
- 48:16
- He studied at the University of Glasgow in Edinburgh, became assistant to Robert Candlish.
- 48:22
- I know you've heard of Robert Candlish. He became Robert Candlish's assistant. Candlish is mostly known for his volume on 1
- 48:30
- John, but he's also... He actually did a book that I've published, Candlish did, on the prayer of a broken heart.
- 48:40
- And it's his exposition of Psalm 51. It's an outstanding, outstanding book.
- 48:46
- Well, Hamilton was a contemporary of Spurgeon and was just an incredibly gifted writer.
- 48:54
- This volume that I have right now, and there are six volumes, there's a six -volume set of his works that has been produced by Phil.
- 49:03
- The volume that I have right now in stock is volume five of the six, and it's entitled
- 49:09
- Moses, the Man of God. And the first 300 -some pages basically walk you through the life of Moses all the way through from beginning to end.
- 49:19
- And it is a powerful, powerful work. He also, in this volume, has a series of lectures on 2
- 49:29
- Peter 1, which he entitles the Golden Series. And what he did there is he takes each of the attributes that are laid out, the
- 49:40
- Golden Series to your faith, that fortitude, knowledge, temperance, patience, godliness, brotherly kindness, and charity.
- 49:49
- And he has a lecture for each of those from 2 Peter 1. He then has another short little volume entitled
- 49:57
- Philosophy and Christianity, in which he addresses the Stoic, the Epicurean, Plato, and then philosophy and Christianity.
- 50:07
- Then he has also, believe it or not, in this one volume, it's over 550 pages, he has a section that he calls the
- 50:15
- Ethics of the Gospel. Lectures on Philippians 4 .8. Now, I know you know that,
- 50:22
- Chris. Philippians 4 .8. Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is reputable, think upon these things.
- 50:34
- Well, he has a lecture on each one of those, a lecture on truth, two on nobleness, justice, purity, loveliness.
- 50:40
- So, this is quite a remarkable volume. The 330 or 340 pages that he has on Moses is worth the price of the book itself, but it has these other works as well within it.
- 50:56
- So, Hamilton's works are greatly and highly recommended.
- 51:03
- We also have Laidlaw's works on both James and Zechariah. I earlier said that we have the two copies of John Brown on Romans.
- 51:17
- Phenomenal exposition of Romans, analytical exposition of Romans. We have another volume called
- 51:24
- The Israel of the Alps. Can you guess who that might be? Who would be considered the Israel of the
- 51:29
- Alps, Chris? This is a test for you. I'm going to see, I know most of your callers are like really nice people.
- 51:36
- You're always asking them questions. Well, the Swiss Alps could possibly mean
- 51:42
- John Calvin. No, no, the Israel of the Alps were the Waldensians. Oh, okay.
- 51:47
- Who are Calvinists? Exactly, we're Calvinists. That's right, that's right. It's a history of the
- 51:53
- Waldensians and their persecutions. Powerful, a powerful work. There's also a volume that he's published that he's running out of now called
- 52:02
- The 2 ,000 Confessors of the 1662. Great exposition.
- 52:08
- You know, that's when all of these men, these great Puritans that we know, the names of these men, these 2 ,000 confessors, are like a who's who.
- 52:19
- Thomas Mann and Thomas Watson, Richard Baxter, these were the men that were booted out of their pulpits basically in one week in 1662.
- 52:29
- And these names, Charnock, Flavel, Matthew Mead, John Howe, Matthew Poole, William Bates, George Swinnick, Ralph Venning, all of these, it's just unbelievable, the men,
- 52:43
- Thomas Brooks, William Gouge, Joseph Aline, Philip Henry, Matthew's father,
- 52:50
- William Bridge, Anthony Burgess, Edward Calamee, Joseph Carroll, who did 12 volumes on Job, William Spurstow, Edwin Stanton, it's just unbelievable the names of these men.
- 53:05
- There were 2 ,000 men. And this is a volume that, a rare volume published in 1860, the author reviews the events, details, and principles upon which the ministers acted, the oppressive measures under which they suffered, and the influence they have had on succeeding times.
- 53:23
- It's complete with a biographical sketch and facts and anecdotes characteristic of the times, eminently accessible introduction to this vital period in English church history.
- 53:33
- In fact, we have to go to our midway break right now, and you can pick up right where you left off there. Folks, please be patient with us, because this is the longer than normal break, because Grace Life Radio, 90 .1
- 53:44
- FM, in Lake City, Florida, requires of us a longer break in the middle of the show, because they, by FCC regulations, have to air their own public service announcements and other local things in the middle of the show, while we air our globally heard commercials.
- 54:02
- So please use this time wisely. Write down as much of the information as you can possibly write down, provided by our advertisers, so that you can more frequently and successfully patronize them, which will mean they will remain our advertisers more than likely, and which subsequently means that we will have a longer future on the air, because we depend upon their finances to exist.
- 54:23

Although God has brought me all over the globe for many years to teach, preach, and debate at numerous venues, some of my very fondest memories are from those precious times of fellowship with Pastor Rich Jensen and the brethren at Hope Reform Baptist Church, now located at their new, beautiful facilities in Corham, Long Island, New York.

- 01:13:09
- Bonson Against All Opposition Defending the Christian Worldview the reason why there can be a new book by Greg Bonson even though he's been in heaven for decades is because these are the transcripts of lectures that Dr.

- Oz Guinness for the first hour and Gary DeMar for the second hour and by the way folks we'll give you a heads up we're giving away both of those books by both of our guests tomorrow to the first five listeners who submit questions that are worthy of being read on air and so if you want to win one of those books write a good question for Oz Guinness and or Gary DeMar also folks just keep in mind that this coronavirus pandemic and the hysteria attached to it has caused a lot of havoc in the financial lives of many of us including myself we have lost two of our largest financial supporters of this program in fact they are the two largest financial supporters that we lost and we are hoping that this is temporary but their businesses were so negatively impacted by the coronavirus hysteria that they had to at least temporarily put on hold any future any further giving to Iron Sharp and Zion Radio so can you help us make up for that can you please go to ironsharpandzionradio .com

- 01:18:32
- chrisarnzion at gmail .com we have been paying tribute to Phil Roberts and Tentmaker publications and also getting
- 01:18:41
- Mike's suggestions for the finest in Christian literature that has been brought back into print and I stopped you mid -sentence before the break
- 01:18:48
- Mike so if you want to continue on that thought and perhaps list a couple more
- 01:18:54
- Tentmaker publications and then we can move on to other things as well yeah there are several well there are several books that I pulled out during the break here to be able to consider one of them is
- 01:19:08
- Jonah his life character and mission by Patrick Fairbairn and C .H.
- 01:19:13
- Spurgeon said about Fairbairn's commentary on Jonah the nature and design of his mission are fully explained the work is well done and by far the ablest
- 01:19:24
- English treatment on this subject also there is a volume that Phil Reed did called theology of the
- 01:19:31
- Old Testament by Gustav Friedrich Oller and Robert Martin who is the late
- 01:19:38
- Robert Martin now he passed away a couple years ago of cancer he was pastoring at an Emmanuel Reformed Baptist Church and he wrote just a powerful recommendation on the back of this volume theology of the
- 01:19:52
- Old Testament and Oller's work he says is a rare gem his footnotes alone are worth more than some biblical theologian's life work that's pretty that's pretty amazing statement to make it's also pretty it would be pretty embarrassing to have somebody say this man said more in his footnotes than you have said your whole life
- 01:20:21
- Robert had a good sense of humor I'm sure that he said that tongue -in -cheek but it was it was a very very strong recommendation you know
- 01:20:30
- I didn't really get a chance to go into too much about this book Wonders of Grace what is really special about this book
- 01:20:39
- Wonders of Grace original testimonies of converts during Spurgeon's early years it's the book is really beautifully laid out and it's very attractive looking book it has 138 testimonies of people and just talking about the power of God's word particularly through the preaching of Spurgeon and one man in particular the testimony was given by Thomas Moore and this was a man who he hated the church and he hated the church so much that when his wife and children went to church on a
- 01:21:18
- Sunday night sometimes he would literally lock the door and not let them in and they would be kept outside sometimes in the rain all night long and he did this and it didn't work she still took them to church the next week anyway so then his next move was to burn her clothes he burned her clothes and unfortunately for him she was a very industrious lady and she ended up working hard and replacing the clothes and so then what he started to do was he started to beat her and sometimes he beat her so badly that she couldn't even walk for a couple of days and then finally through the providence of God he ended up going to hear
- 01:22:10
- Spurgeon preach and Spurgeon's message was so powerful and he said that he almost felt as if Spurgeon had singled him out in fact he had gone one time to hear
- 01:22:24
- Spurgeon preach and he didn't want to go into the main hall he ended up standing behind the door in the sanctuary and as Spurgeon is preaching he spoke about a man named
- 01:22:38
- Mr. Sly Boots and he said when everybody was gathered he would be willing to be gathered but then he said but then he'll hide behind the door of the church hoping no one will see him and here the man was hiding behind the door hearing
- 01:22:56
- Spurgeon preaching and it was almost like he just was singled out and God just broke the man and he eventually was converted and gave his testimony and his wife was converted well his wife was already a believer but his wife then became a member they became members together and it was just an amazing story of grace and one of the testimonies that Thomas Moore wrote he actually apologized for the length of the testimony and Spurgeon would read every one of these testimonies and Spurgeon wrote a little
- 01:23:31
- PS at the bottom after Moore said it was he apologized for such a long testimony
- 01:23:38
- Spurgeon actually corrected him and said not too long at all a wonderful testimony of grace so it was just it's neat to find that this man
- 01:23:48
- Thomas Moore was a man who had the privilege of being able to hear the testimony first of all the man sat under the ministry of Spurgeon for many years he was one of the elders and was on the inside with Spurgeon and listen to what this is what
- 01:24:07
- Thomas Moore actually says in the preface to his book Counsels and Thoughts when
- 01:24:13
- I first read this I didn't know what he was referring to but now knowing that he had had the privilege of sitting and listening to all these testimonies now it makes more sense this is what he said moreover those who have been privileged to have much intercourse with believers in relation to their spiritual experience in all its varied stages he then goes on and talks about what a tremendous privilege it is to be able to hear these testimonies well again when
- 01:24:45
- I first read that I had no idea who he was nor did I have any idea that he was connected to Spurgeon the way that he was so it's just an amazing thing to see the hand of God and as I said it was
- 01:24:59
- Tom Nettles who you might say accidentally but by the hand of God uncovered the this man
- 01:25:07
- Thomas Moore and was finally able to find out who he was in fact Tom has been back in touch with the people at Metropolitan Tabernacle and they're trying now to do more research to find out more about the man like how long was he an elder there and where was he from when was he born when did he die we're trying to find out all this information so that when we do a new edition of Councils and Thoughts we'll be able to include all of that information about Moore so there's also a volume on the book of Psalms there's a volume that I just discovered that Tentmaker did and it was from Nichols series commentaries and it's actually called a commentary on individual
- 01:25:55
- Psalms three authors all Puritans Samuel Smith Thomas Pearson and William Gouge William Gouge is better known for his work on the family as well as the commentary on Hebrews which
- 01:26:09
- I have published this book has Samuel Smith did a commentary on Psalm one it is absolutely amazing and just on that one
- 01:26:21
- Psalm he has about eighty pages of exposition on those six verses and then
- 01:26:26
- Thomas Pearson did an exposition of Psalm 27 85 86 or 84 85 and 87 and then
- 01:26:37
- Gouge did one on Psalm 116 and it's there were basically three volumes that were put together by Phil in this volume called individual
- 01:26:49
- Psalms and just powerful powerful stuff any questions at all
- 01:26:55
- Chris from anybody yes we have first of all let me read two very brief commendations they're not questions but an old friend of yours
- 01:27:06
- Pastor Phil Alba at Cornerstone Christian Church in Hicksville Long Island he has to say something to you and let me get that I had it right in front of me and it disappeared oh here it is give
- 01:27:25
- Mike my warmest regards and appreciation for his lifelong work promoting the
- 01:27:31
- Kingdom of God and the great positive influence he had on my life personally that's
- 01:27:37
- Pastor Phil Alba Cornerstone Christian Church Hicksville Long Island New York and we have another commendation from Grady in Asheboro North Carolina Hi Chris and Mike I don't have a question
- 01:27:53
- I just wanted to thank you both for your ministries you are an encouragement and you build upon the saints you build up the saints also thanks
- 01:28:03
- Mike for supporting Iron Trump and Zion Radio love you brothers and now we have an actual question we have
- 01:28:12
- Johnny from Queens New York who says I missed the earlier portion of the program but I'm enjoying what
- 01:28:20
- Brother Mike is sharing I've held on to a very good word of admonition from Mike Adosh read the best there are many books published that are not worth the paper it's printed on Christians often desire to read up our recommended works on a particular subject but lack the knowledge of what best works are available apart from searching through the general category of books on solid ground
- 01:28:50
- Christian books and other solid reform publishers would Mike consider producing a larger more robust list of book recommendations systematic theology addressing particular life issue et cetera et cetera in a printed volume ah that's an interesting idea yeah
- 01:29:11
- I've actually had some men that have approached me about doing something similar to this I think Pastor Steve Martin was one of those who had he was in the process of working on I don't know where he is on that it was
- 01:29:26
- I think in his case if I'm not mistaken it's been a while that I've talked to him about this but I think he was talking about doing something like Spurgeon's Commenting on Commentaries that's the most famous volume done and I think he was considering doing
- 01:29:44
- I think an updated version of that so that is a possibility I could not possibly do it myself but I could publish something that somebody else did it but the amount of work that's involved especially with the number of books that are coming out regularly it almost seems to me like doing it in a printed form in today's day is probably not the best way to do it because as soon as you get the book done there's going to be 25 more books that come out on a particular theme not only on a particular theme but it's not even just new books but you have books that people like Reformation Heritage are doing now they've just finished the ten volume set of William Perkins which hasn't been available forever and they have the finest they've done the finest job of putting that material together and it's now available and so I'm not sure that it would make sense to do something like that in written form that would be like permanent because it's ever changing and the day and age in which we live probably just doing it on a disc or doing it on just a website there are websites obviously that have such recommendations but I know
- 01:31:10
- I couldn't do it there's no way that I would ever be able to find the time to do it right now I'm not just publishing and running the business here but I do a teacher bible study every
- 01:31:20
- Monday night we're going to Philippians I'm doing a men's bible study we're going to the book of Acts in our church on Tuesday night we meet every
- 01:31:29
- Thursday night with people from our neighborhood here so I just would not have possibly the time to do that but I think it's a good idea it's a good thought but I would recommend taking advantage of the materials that are available online right now okay we have
- 01:31:53
- John in Bangor Maine who says I know that the scriptures and their relevance to all time will never be outdated and never be useless and that the best of Christian writers throughout all centuries have based their books from the gleanings of holy scripture so therefore a good
- 01:32:18
- Christian book from the past should be just as relevant today as the day it was written but my question for you is in your opinion who were the best men that we should keep our eye open for from the past whose writings translate very well to modern current events and circumstances where it seems as if they are speaking to the very culture in which we are living now that's a very difficult question to answer
- 01:32:49
- I think I would agree with everything that he said in the beginning I would think that going back to some of the
- 01:33:00
- Puritans that men like Thomas Watson and Manton by the way
- 01:33:10
- I want to make an announcement even though I'm not going to get any sales from this as you know
- 01:33:16
- Chris about I don't know how long it's been now 12 to 15 years ago I published Thomas Manton's 22 volume set and that's only once a year they do it it's 50 % so that would be $250 well they're offering right now they're offering
- 01:34:31
- Manton's 22 volume set brand new for $200 that's amazing it's an amazing price and the thing that they're doing it the reason why they're doing it is because they want as many people as possible to be able to get it and what they're not doing which disappointed me when
- 01:34:57
- I heard it but I understand even their distributors Reformation Heritage Christian Book Distributors Solid Ground Books we are not able to get any more than one set that's why
- 01:35:09
- I bought it for myself I mean amazingly I published a thousand sets of Manton I don't even have my own
- 01:35:17
- I don't have one of my own because I ended up I needed to sell but I couldn't keep one for myself well this price is so cheap that I just I felt like well
- 01:35:27
- I'm going to get one for myself if I can only buy one right now I'm going to just buy it for myself and for my family going forward so let me recommend even though I know that's $200 that won't be coming to Solid Ground I want to recommend that your people if they don't have
- 01:35:45
- Manton get Manton Manton is absolutely amazing wow that is something and also not nearly as monumental an announcement as you just made but another name that translates well from the past to the present
- 01:36:03
- I thought anyway was Thomas Brooks oh yeah is it precious remedies against Satan's devices is that the title that's right
- 01:36:13
- I remember when I first read that and I think it's a banner of truth
- 01:36:19
- Puritan paperback I think they called it series the Puritan paperbacks I remember when
- 01:36:24
- I first read that in the perhaps the early 90s late 80s I was like I can't believe this this guy was a
- 01:36:31
- Puritan and it sounds like he's writing about exactly what we are facing in our culture today I mean obviously there's some language that reveals the person is not of this time but at the same time
- 01:36:47
- I mean it's just utterly amazing to me oh it's timeless it really is and in fact
- 01:36:52
- I have a series of books that have been redone recently from that same era and there's there's ten of them right now that were done by Richard Align the book
- 01:37:14
- The World Conquered by Faithful Christian The Godly Family Essays on Duties of Parents and Children there are there's material in here by Samuel Davies George Whitfield Henry Venn Phillip Doddridge Thomas Houston Thomas Watson's book
- 01:37:33
- Heaven Taken by Storm there's also Thomas Watson's book The Art of Divine Contentment The Evil of Evils by Jeremiah Burroughs Practice of Piety by Louis Bailey Altogether Lovely by Jonathan Edwards there's so many of these great great authors from the past that wrote in such a way that that that it speaks directly to today it absolutely speaks directly to today and you're the man who asked the question is exactly right that any man who studies the scriptures and speaks from the scriptures is going to be speaking in a way that is contemporary and because it's the timeless word of God God's word is perfect it is without error and because the
- 01:38:30
- Holy Spirit spoke and wrote in a way that would reach all times and all languages that's why
- 01:38:41
- Hebrew poetry you probably know this Chris but Hebrew poetry unlike English poetry where we have meter we have rhyme well the problem with meter and rhyme is when you translate into another language you lose that because the words that rhyme in English aren't going to rhyme that same word when it's translated into another language you lose the rhyme and the same thing with the meter the meter will change so Hebrew poetry didn't didn't go by meter it went by thought parallels there's antithetical parallelism there's a variety of different kinds of parallelism that's in Hebrew poetry that's found of course all throughout the book of Psalms but is also found in the prophets
- 01:39:35
- Isaiah and Jeremiah and they had their their poetry as it were was thought parallels which means it's translatable into any language and you don't lose the significance of that well that's the beauty of of God's word being able to be translated and these great authors who spoke 1600s 1700s you you read them and they'll talk about things or in the 1800s and they'll describe the nation and the terrible condition that the nation is in and the riots that are going on and there are times when they're even talking about in the 1800s talking about the riots that were taking place with the railroad and you think you're reading something that just happened last week it's really quite amazing the timeless truth of God's word communicated across the ages it's just the beauty the beauty of God's word that's the beauty of God and His word
- 01:40:45
- Amen We have an anonymous listener who says I would like you to recommend two different volumes that reach out to the hearts of men and women for the same reason one volume that might be of greater length for those who already know that they could spend hours and days in a room alone just soaking up countless pages in a volume on a given subject and the second shorter volume to give perhaps even to an unbeliever who would never sit down and read a lengthy tome on anything but may pick up a smaller volume and the subject that I'm speaking of particularly is those that are going through the greatest sorrows and distresses and sadnesses that they have ever experienced those things that can paralyze you in your bed all day long and almost give up hope were it not for the mercy of God do you know of any author from the past that you most recommend that would have both of those volumes the larger and the smaller one for yourself and one to give away wow that's a that's a great question um
- 01:42:03
- I I just actually literally got in a book that could be useful for the um the latter which would be the the unbeliever uh it's a book written by Ligon Duncan just just came out it's a very small book entitled when pain is real and God seems silent wow finding hope in the psalms and uh it's a very small book it's only it's only let's see uh it's only 50 pages long it's a very small book it's the kind of book that would definitely not be a book that would be difficult for a person who's not a great reader uh to be able to to read um there's a a volume by um by Nancy Guthrie uh she edited a work entitled be still my soul embracing
- 01:43:07
- God's purpose and provision in suffering and in this book it's a it's also it's not a not a large poem it's a it's 150 160 pages but she has 25 classic and contemporary readings on the problem of pain and um and some of the some of the writers that she has uh fairly short but yet significant pieces from John Calvin illumined by the light of providence
- 01:43:38
- R .C. Sproul is there such a thing as senseless tragedy Johnny Erickson Tata God's Plan A you meant evil against me but God meant it for good uh
- 01:43:51
- Filippianci the gift of pain J .I.
- 01:44:24
- Packer hoped for healing happy in affliction Thomas Manton power in weakness
- 01:44:31
- John Piper to suffer as Christ did Martin Luther learning to be content
- 01:44:36
- Jeremiah Burroughs refuge and rest in Christ Jonathan Edwards well if you can't find anything out of that you got no hope that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that Powerful just those three books right there.
- 01:45:51
- I think would be could be really really helpful one more from the 19th century
- 01:45:58
- Conflict and triumph by William Henry Green a commentary on the book of Job. Oh, yeah
- 01:46:05
- Yeah We have to go to our final break It's going to be a lot more brief than the last one if you have a question that you want to send in do it
