Best Selling "Christian" Books of 2014

The word of this show is "pathetic." There is enough shame to go around today's episode.

Welcome to No Compromise Radio, a ministry coming to you from Bethlehem Bible Church in West Boylston.
00:08
No Compromise Radio is a program dedicated to the ongoing proclamation of Jesus Christ, based on the theme in Galatians 2 verse 5 where the
00:16
Apostle Paul said, But we did not yield in subjection to them for even an hour, so that the truth of the gospel would remain with you.
00:24
In short, if you like smooth, watered -down words to make you simply feel good, this show isnt for you.
00:30
By purpose, we are first biblical, but we can also be controversial. Stay tuned for the next 25 minutes as were called by the
00:37
Divine Trumpet to summon the troops for the honor and glory of her King. Heres our host, Pastor Mike Abendroth.
00:44
Welcome to No Compromise Radio, a ministry. My name is Mike Abendroth and I am your host.
00:50
Typically we have Mondays, one of the sermons that I preach at Bethlehem Bible Church, bbcchurch .org.
00:57
Tuesdays, Im with Tuesday Guy, the Tuesday Guy, as his Twitter handle.
01:03
What do they call that? Twitter name? Twitter feed? Twitter mania?
01:10
I saw something on Twitter a while ago, pastors when they were preparing sermons, they used to say, Thatll preach.
01:16
And now they say, Thatll tweet. What else do we do?
01:22
Wednesdays, I have interviews. Thursdays? Positive, encouraging. Fridays?
01:29
Usually woodshed. So I dont know what today is, but it feels like Friday. Actually in real time, it is a Friday. Big snow coming tomorrow.
01:36
And I have here the best -selling Christian book titles of 2014.
01:44
So what day of the week do you think this is going to fit into? A sermon? Discussion with Pastor Steve?
01:50
Thatd probably be funnier. Wednesday interview? I guess Im interviewing myself. Thursday?
01:56
Positive, K -love. Or Friday? Kind of woodshed Friday. Friends, the best -selling
02:04
Christian titles of 2014, top 25, compiled and distributed by the
02:10
Evangelical Christian Publishers Association, the ECPA, as we say in New England.
02:19
And so we have fiction. We have nonfiction. We have the best Bibles. We can talk about those as well.
02:27
What else do we have? Best Bibles under $10.
02:34
Best translations. Best sellers for juveniles.
02:41
Best juvenile Bibles. Thats a juvenile Bible. Books under $5.
02:48
And this could be a variety of shows. So what were going to do is were going to talk a little bit about discernment, as they might say, over the pond.
02:57
Discernment. So should a Christian be discerning? Should we be known for what were for, or what were against, or what were for and what were against?
03:08
How do we relate in todays society where everybody just has to be kind and nice, except people that hate
03:14
Christians? They dont have to be, but we all have to be. Now, of course, the response to people that dont like us is gentleness and truth and 2
03:24
Timothy 2. I get it. I understand. But what about discernment? And so Ive talked about discernment a lot over the years, and I have always said that discernment is commanded, 1
03:39
Thessalonians 5. Examine everything carefully. And so youre commanded to be a discerning person.
03:48
You cant say, Oh, thats a discernment blog, and I dont like these people, and no co -radio. Theyre just discernment people.
03:55
Friends, on a side note, if I wanted to go for just shock value, shock theater, shock radio in terms of Christianity, I could do it.
04:07
Now, thats probably a prideful statement, but I could do it. I could turn it up a lot. But Im a pastor, after all, and so I have to be somewhat pastoral.
04:15
I mean, I dont want to be crazy man on no -compromise radio, and maybe someday, if Im not a pastor,
04:22
I might turn it up a little bit. But then the giving would go down, I know.
04:34
So discernment is commanded. I mean, lets just think about it. When you go to the bookstore, you should be discerning.
04:41
When you hear sermons, you should be discerning. When you listen to radio stations like this, you should be discerning. When you listen to this podcast, you should be discerning.
04:48
What does the Bible say? And in light of what Scripture says, is this person measuring up?
04:54
And so discernment is commanded. Additionally, in the Bible, discernment is cernment.
05:03
We just, its like Arkansas, cernment. I think we have some listeners in Arkansas. If youre a listener in Arkansas or Mississippi, Id like to know who you are.
05:12
How do you get the internet there? Im just kidding.
05:20
Discernment is commended. Remember the Bereans? It was a couple of years ago, I was with the group as we were off to Greece, and we swung by Berea.
05:30
Theres not really much there to see in terms of Christian iconoclastic rummaging.
05:39
But we were in Berea, and then I said, Open up our
05:44
Bibles to Acts 17 , and the Bereans were commended. Ive always remembered that.
05:51
I think maybe it was on one of my brothers documents.
05:57
Commanded and commended. Ive always remembered that. So if thats Pat Abendroths alliteration, then kudos to young Patrick, patrickabendroth, omahabiblechurch .org.
06:07
You ought to listen to that young man. It comes from a long line of crazy people. So discernment is commended and commanded.
06:15
So when I look at the 2014 top -selling titles underneath the banner of Christianity, I have to tell you, are you ready for the no -co week here, the no -co moment of the week?
06:28
This is pathetic. Its the only word I have. If this is an accurate description, an accurate best -selling titles taxonomic chart, this is just so sad.
06:45
This basically tells me that the people who call themselves Christians arent.
06:52
This tells me that people who just buy books and maybe shame on the publishers, theres enough shame on Christian publishers lately, rightfully so.
07:05
I think if youre a Christian publisher and you want to sell, you know, Arminian and Wesleyan and Calvinistic books, fine.
07:14
You want to sell Premill, Amill, Postmill, Panmill, I happen to be
07:20
Promill, Im for the millennium, who wouldnt be? Im not talking about that, were not talking about in -house debates, but when you sell things that arent
07:31
Christian, you know, what do we do with doctors who arent really doctors?
07:39
They dont do doctoral things. What do we do with people who do the, you know, the fake plastic surgeries in their back rooms and they say theyre a doctor and then somebody dies?
07:49
This is malpractice. This is something not to be trifled with.
07:54
This is the word of the living God and we have to be very careful. Paul, as he is talking about Scripture in 2
08:02
Timothy chapter 3, he says earlier in the chapter, earlier before these, before the verses 16 and 17, that Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, training in righteousness.
08:16
He also says these sacred writings are able to make you wise unto salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.
08:22
This is very important. I joke around, of course, on the radio and in life as well, but Im telling you, when
08:30
I stand in the pulpit, and there might be a little comic relief here or there, but Im deadly serious about trying to stay faithful to what the
08:40
Bible says and to try to uphold Trinitarian faith, to uphold the sovereignty of God and salvation, to uphold
08:51
Jesus Christ and the exclusive salvation found in Him, the God -man only, to talk about substitutionary atonement, literal resurrection.
09:03
I mean, if the Lord would give me grace to do it, I have to say those are things that you die for.
09:10
You do not back down. And then you come to this list here and you see the top 25 best -selling titles, and Im trying to find out some that are even written by Christians.
09:23
Now, there are one or two off the top of my head, but Im just going to read down the list, and it is just pathetic.
09:34
Its appalling. Its awful. I pretty much want to say, if you own one of these books because youre a new
09:42
Christian, well, okay, I get it. But a lot of you know better.
09:48
Anybody that listens to the show would know better. And heres what happens. Most everybody that listens to the show would already know these things that Im going to say anyway.
09:56
But when you go to a friends house, they say, Oh, yeah, were Christians. And you go to their house, these are the books youll find there.
10:01
When you go to Barnes & Noble, these are the books youll find there.
10:08
You go to CBD, these are the books youll find there. And by the way, these are the moneymakers, right? So, best -selling titles, these are the moneymakers.
10:17
And it is incredibly pathetic. Im just going to use that word all the time. It is awful.
10:24
And so, what could I do? I could just trash these guys the whole time, thats sure. Im sure of that.
10:30
But lets pick some good books. And by the way, thats why on No Compromise Radio, I regularly have guests on so that youll say, Oh,
10:38
I should maybe read that person. Somebody said on Facebook a while ago, you know, just negative, you know, maybe kind of just like only a
10:47
MacArthur guy or select few people. I wrote back and I said, well, you know, probably quoted 70 different people recently.
10:55
You know, if you listen long enough and look at the Facebook and tweets long enough on No Compromise Radio, there are so many faithful men who have taught the truth and are teaching the truth now.
11:09
Its not a matter of everything is wrong. Im saying here, this is the litmus test for whats wrong with Christianity.
11:15
Man -centered, gruel is what it is. Its just awful.
11:21
And so, if your plan is to read one good book about the Lord and His church and His Word every month, dont go to these kind of lists.
11:32
Walk into a bookstore, walk past, if its a Christian bookstore, quote, unquote, walk past the
11:38
Roman Catholic section, walk past the Word -Faith section, walk past the Hyper -Charismatic section, walk past the
11:46
Greek Orthodox section, walk past the Armenian Orthodox section. I didnt say Armenian. Okay.
11:51
Walk past the Armenian section. Walk past the CDs. Walk past the trinkets.
11:57
Walk past the Jesus pick -me -guitar -pick section. Walk past, you know,
12:03
Joyce Meyers section. She has a whole, she has a whole wall. And then get to the very back and youll find a little section on Christian doctrine or something.
12:12
Thats what to look for. Because it is just awful. Look at the list here.
12:18
Now, before we go to the list, these little sub -category lists are kind of interesting, and its a little bit lighter because, you know, we have light things around here regarding the
12:27
Evangelical Christian Publishers Association. Best -selling translations.
12:33
This is just interesting before we get to the flogging part. The NIV. Thats the best -selling translation according to these guys in 2014.
12:43
King James Version. Okay. They had to put that on there. It doesnt really sell that much outside of a couple colleges and areas, but they were forced to do that.
12:52
So nobody was sending them Gale Rippling or books. Kidding. New Living Translation.
12:59
Right. Its not the living. Its the new living. New King James Version and the English Standard Version. Those are the best -selling
13:06
Bibles by category of translation, and Im quite shocked that the message isnt up there, but, you know, now weve got the message with the
13:14
Deutero -canonical books, the Catholic books, and so, you know, you can get whatever you want.
13:21
Best Bibles under $10. I mean, if youre going to pick a
13:28
Bible under $10, we should have a list for that, right? Everybody needs cheap Bibles. You know, these are the ones you give to the missionaries.
13:38
Santa Biblia RV 1909. Thats under category one.
13:44
Thats not three different ones. Its not the RV Bible, the 1909 Bible. Economy Bible ESV.
13:51
Okay. Large Print Bible NIV. Gift and Award Economy Bible NLT. And Gift and Award Bible HCSB.
13:59
So weve got New Living Translation at number four, and the Holman Christian Standard Bible. I believe the
14:06
Holman Christian Standard Bible translates Lord all caps as Yahweh. I think thats so.
14:12
Its not really one of my preferred translations, but I will give them props for that. Now, we have the best of 2014,
14:20
Juvenile. Now, the top 25 list is the
14:26
Juvenile Delinquents, but here we have the Juvenile. I need Steve here because that was pretty lame, I know. The Jesus Storybook Bible.
14:34
That sounds good, doesnt it? Maybe its really great. The Story of Christmas. The Action Bible.
14:43
Just, you know, it takes out all the genealogies or something.
14:51
Jesus Calling 365 Devotions for Kids. Thats awful. Thats pagan.
14:58
Really Wooly Bedtime Prayers. You know, that might be really nice. Could be great. I dont know anything about it.
15:03
Now that my kids are older and driving and stuff like that, I dont know about the Wooly Bedtime Prayers.
15:10
Best of 2014. My name is Mike Ebendroth, by the way. Im not the best of 2014, but thats my name.
15:16
Its just, you know, you have to say that on radio once in a while. I dont know why. Why do we do that? In case youre just tuning into the middle of the podcast.
15:23
Best of 2014, under $5. Best sellers according to the
15:28
ECPA. So, in case you want cheap books, and you get what you pay for, of course.
15:34
Laugh Out Loud Jokes for Kids. LOL. Knock Knock Jokes for Kids. I guess these are all
15:40
Christians. Knock knock, whos there? Noah. You know, that kind of thing. Knock knock, whos there?
15:46
Jabesh. Whatever happened to Jabeshs prayer? Oh, its still in the
15:51
Bible. The Berenstain Bears. Now, it doesnt say Steen, okay?
15:57
This, Im just reading exactly what this says. I skipped over Know Your Bible, all 66 books. Thats probably good.
16:04
The Berenstain Bears and the Easter Story. So, weve either got a typo, or I dont know what
16:11
Im talking about, or its a blatant ripoff of the Berenstain Bears. I dont know.
16:17
Are the Berenstain Bears? Who are they? The Jewish Bears? Are they
16:23
Protestant Bears? Are they Kosher Bears? I have no idea. The Berenstain Bears.
16:29
These are like Bereans, I guess. Number five, the Easter Story. So, those are the little subcategories.
16:37
And now we get to the pathetic category of 2014 best -selling titles.
16:45
And so, again, think about it. What do you give your children to eat?
16:51
Youre careful for the nutritional value. And for our house, its usually Fritos in the morning with a little bit of half and half on top, right, for lunch.
17:02
Ice cream sandwiches, deep fat fried. Cant fry them very long because otherwise they just kind of goop out.
17:11
Number one, Jesus Calling, Sarah Young.
17:18
Its awful. Its pagan. Its not just charismatic. Its mysticism.
17:25
Its Ramtha. Its channeling. Its New Age, number one best -seller.
17:33
Thomas Nelson Publishers, shame. Number two, Heaven is for Real, paperback.
17:40
Todd Burpo, Thomas Nelson Publishers, shame. Along with the
17:48
Malarkey book, we have now, of course, the Burpo book. And we have things described about heaven that are false.
17:57
Its a false book. And the guys got 10 million in his pocket, that is the dad.
18:03
And probably Thomas Nelson has 40 million in their pockets. And I, with Don Green, would call on Thomas Nelson, Tyndale, and these kind of people who are fleecing the flock.
18:16
I dont know if theyre the flock if theyre buying such tripe. But its just wrong.
18:22
Its so wrong. Number three, Heaven is for Real, the movie edition. If it couldnt get any worse.
18:30
And this just makes me sick, basically. As a pastor, if I went to your house and I saw these 25 books,
18:37
I think you need an intervention. Seriously, Id be nice about it. But Id say, you know, heres how
18:42
Id approach it, pastorally. Oh, you know, Im so glad you like to read. Theres a couple books
18:48
Id love to give you. And I would try to help, sorry to use the word channel, especially talking about Jesus calling books.
18:57
I would help channel your desire to read to something good. Because maybe you dont know any better, right? Youre a new Christian.
19:02
So Id be nice. Remember, as a pastor, I try to be nice. But no compromise means no compromise.
19:08
Always biblical, always provocative, always in that order. You dont need these books that are lies. These are lies.
19:13
These will not help you in your Christian faith. What makes me think about Heaven more? No, its the wrong Heaven. The way you think about Heaven is in the
19:21
Bible. Thats the only way you know anything about Heaven. Not from some anesthesia or oxygen -deprived person given information from his father.
19:31
In my opinion. Four. Five love languages. Gary Chapman.
19:37
Moody Publishers. You know what? What kind of day is it on No Compromise Radio when
19:43
I say thats the best so far? What kind of love language do you have? Well, mine is receiving gifts.
19:51
Thats my love language. Five. Four blood moons.
19:58
John Hagee. Six. All right, heres the one book.
20:04
I dont know how, maybe Lifeway bought a bunch of these and it got put up on the list or something.
20:10
Im not sure. I think Rainers got to, Tom Rainers got some issues with Lifeway that hes going to have to clean up and maybe by the time this airs it will all have been cleaned up.
20:21
But the guys orthodox. The guys evangelical. The guys not, you know, Romp the
20:26
Channeler or something like that. I am a church member, Tom Rainer, Broadman and Holman Publishing Group.
20:34
Thats now replaced, Cat Chapman is the best book on the list. And you know what, its probably an excellent book. But where are the other books that are any good?
20:44
Total Money Makeover, Dave Ramsey. Thomas Nelson. You Can, You Will, Joel Osteen.
20:52
Its Faith Words is the publisher, a division of Hatchet Book Group.
20:59
Hatchet, but it looks like hatchet. The Daniel Plan, Rick Warren. Mystery of Shemitah, Jonathan Cahn.
21:09
Instinct by T .D. Jakes. Smart Money, Smart Kids, Dave Ramsey. Good Call, Jace Robertson.
21:16
You know what, that must be the duck call guy. Good Call. So who knows, you know, if you like baptismal regeneration in Church of Christ, maybe thats the book for you.
21:25
Maybe thats a good call. Jesus Today, Sarah Young. More Blasphemy. The Harbinger, Jonathan Cahn.
21:33
Unfiltered, Phil Robertson. My guess is these Duck Dynasty books are just therapeutic, moralistic deism.
21:41
Good Stories, More Law. The Best Yes, Lisa Turkhurst.
21:48
Dont know anything about it. Jesus Calling Deluxe Edition, Sarah Young. More Blasphemy. Circle Maker, Mark Batterson.
21:55
Awful. Jesus Calling Deluxe Edition, L .P. Sarah Young. Love Does, Bob Goff.
22:03
I thought that was Bob Geldof when I first read it, but its not a Monday.
22:09
Thomas Nelson. Dont know anything about the book. Sarah Young. Jesus Calling Womens Edition, 22. 23.
22:14
Ms. Ks Duck Commander Kitchen. So even if theres nothing wrong in the
22:20
Duck Commander books, three out of the top 25. I mean, usually in these lists, you know,
22:27
Chuck Swindoll will make the list. Charles Stanley will make the list. John MacArthur will make the list.
22:34
David Jeremiah will make the list. One of these guys thats well known, and of course, Im not putting them all together, certainly not theologically together, but theyre all going to write things that are, theyre not romp the stuff.
22:47
Theyre not channeling. Theyre not New Age. Theyre not sit down with a pen and listen to God, and if you hear something, write it down.
22:55
And its not anything like that. But they didnt make the list. The Rainer book is the only book. Lets put the
23:01
Gary Chapman one up there with the love language thing. And its more psychology than Bible, but at least its not,
23:09
I mean, I cant believe Im saying I recommend the book. Im not recommending them, but its the two best books in the entire list.
23:18
Boundaries by Heavenly Cloud. No, thats Henry Cloud. And then the Women of Duck Commanders, Kay Robertson.
23:25
So, weve got now four out of the top 25 are Duck Commander stuff.
23:31
So, itll basically be law stuff, do good, be good, cook good, cook well.
23:38
Youve got some money books by Ramsey. Youve got only one dieting book that I can see.
23:47
Youve got T .D. Jakes who doesnt believe in the Trinity. So, its not a Christian book when you dont believe in the
23:52
Trinity. Youve got four. Did I count four books by Sarah Young that are derivatives of Jesus Calling?
24:01
We didnt get the calendar or anything like that. And then youve got a couple of the heaven books, the heavens,
24:07
Im telling you about the wrong heaven, the anesthesia heaven, not the Bible heaven. This is just awful.
24:15
So, if you like these books and you want to get mad at me, I hope you get so mad at me you read something good.
24:22
That you pick up a book by someone else and read something about who the
24:27
Lord God is. I dont care if its Arthur Pinck, Sinclair Ferguson, J.
24:32
Gresham Machen, John MacArthur, Thomas Watson. Oh, wait, number 26 of the list.
24:39
Its just in with a bullet. Its just in across the ticker tape. Mike Avendroth, Clint Archer, and Byron Yawn.
24:46
Things that go bump in the church. I knew we were going to make it. That royalty checks on its way for certain.
24:53
My name is Mike Avendroth. This is No Compromise Radio. You can write us at info at nocompromiseradio .com.
24:58
