Tension, Temptation, and Trust (Luke 4:1-14; Mark 1:12-13; Matthew 4:1-11; Hebrews 4:14-16)
By Simon Pranaitis, Teacher | November 24, 2024 | Adult Sunday School Description: The book of Hebrews counsels us to come to God for grace in time of need through the ministry of Jesus, our great High Priest who can sympathize with us in our weaknesses. But, was he really tested in all things as we are? Is His humanity genuine? When tested, how did He respond? Examining the Gospel account of Jesus' temptation in the wilderness helps us answer these questions and directs toward how we should learn to pursue obedience through Jesus in the power of the Spirit. Application Questions • Have you meditated on the reality that Jesus experienced the fullness of human frailty? • When you experience times of trial or testing, do you see them as God’s gift to you as a means to draw you closer to Himself through Christ? • Do you believe that Jesus can have genuine compassion on you in your trials? • Do you fight temptation with Scripture? What is preventing you from doing so? • Do you trust God enough to allow His timing to reign in your circumstances? • Are you tempted to take matters into your own hands rather than trusting in God to provide during times of difficulty? Luke 4:1-14 Jesus full of the Holy Spirit returned from the Jordan and was led around by the Spirit in the wilderness for forty days being tempted by the devil. And He ate nothing during those days and when they had ended He became hungry. And the devil said to Him "If You are the Son of God tell this stone to become bread." And Jesus answered him "It is written 'MAN SHALL NOT LIVE ON BREAD ALONE.'" And he led Him up and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. And the devil said to Him "I will give You all this domain and its glory; for it has been handed over to me and I give it to whomever I wish. "Therefore if You worship before me it shall all be Yours." Jesus answered him "It is written 'YOU SHALL WORSHIP THE LORD YOUR GOD AND SERVE HIM ONLY.'" And he led Him to Jerusalem and had Him stand on the pinnacle of the temple and said to Him "If You are the Son of God throw Yourself down from here; for it is written 'HE WILL COMMAND HIS ANGELS CONCERNING YOU TO GUARD YOU' and 'ON their HANDS THEY WILL BEAR YOU UP SO THAT YOU WILL NOT STRIKE YOUR FOOT AGAINST A STONE.'" And Jesus answered and said to him "It is said 'YOU SHALL NOT PUT THE LORD YOUR GOD TO THE TEST.'" When the devil had finished every temptation he left Him until an opportune time. And Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit and news about Him spread through all the surrounding district. - Luke 4:1-14 NASB Luke 4:1-14: https://word.ofgod.link/nasb/Luke4:1-14?partner=kootenaichurch Mark 1:12-13: https://word.ofgod.link/nasb/Mark1:12-13?partner=kootenaichurch Matthew 4:1-11: https://word.ofgod.link/nasb/Matthew4:1-11?partner=kootenaichurch Hebrews 4:14-16: https://word.ofgod.link/nasb/Hebrews4:14-16?partner=kootenaichurch
