Mad, Bad, Dangerous To Know (part 3) - The Life Of Martin Luther

00:00
Just give you a heads up. This is actually a part two of a series about two weeks ago I believe I was up teaching and what we were talking about is the words in the
00:10
Bible But God and Steve actually did a great job this morning kind of talking about that If you weren't here this morning, you'll hear it when you are in the later service
00:21
But it's really to talk about the the words but God and what that means to us as Christians And one of the things that we looked at We took a little look or a tour through a couple passages in the
00:34
Old Testament, and it was really focused on God's saving power Physically, we looked at people such as Adam and Eve But God right we looked at Noah But God we looked at bunch of other sections within the
00:52
Old Testament where God saved his people and Today we're gonna finish up just that part of it
00:58
We'll go through a little bit more kind of give you an outline if you weren't here a couple weeks ago Talking about where we are what we're gonna do and I'll restate kind of the purpose of why
01:09
I wanted to teach this Let me ask you a question though tonight or tonight today this morning
01:16
Who here wants to go to hell? Not many hands who here deserves to go to hell.
01:26
I Raise our hands because every one of us here deserves hell and what we'll see today is the but God message is all about Although we deserve to go to hell
01:37
God saves his people and Takes them to heaven to glorify him
01:43
So I did also want to start a little bit of a news flash This I thought was interesting and anyone who has money who wanted to give it to me to do some of this research
01:53
This is a new Study that's being done Hugh Pitkin's writes this
02:00
Humans have pondered their mortality for a millennia. I Would probably agree with that now the
02:06
University of California at Riverside reports that it has received five million dollar grant
02:12
From John Templeton from the John Templeton Foundation that will fund research on aspects of immortality
02:19
I'll take five million dollars and I think our scripture pretty much explains with this but It goes on to say this he will look at things including near -death experiences the impact of belief on an afterlife in human behavior
02:34
People have been thinking about mortality throughout history. We have a deep human need to figure out what happens after death
02:41
Which again scripture says? Says this John Martin Fisher the principal investigator on the immortality project
02:52
No one has taken a comprehensive and sustained look at immortality
02:57
That brings together the science theology and philosophy Fisher says he's going to investigate two different kinds of immortality
03:07
So the first immortality that is going to be investigated five million dollars for this remember One is the possibility of living forever without dying
03:16
So he's going to investigate that and the major questions here are whether it's technically Plausible or even feasible for us either by biological enhancement such as those described by John by the name of Ray Kurzweil it looks like or by some combination of biological
03:34
Enhancement and or uploading our minds into computers in the future Sounds pretty exciting to me.
03:40
All right, I come in from the computer industry Second would be to investigate the full range of questions about Jude Judaism Christianity Hindu Buddhist and other
03:53
Asian religions and their concepts of an afterlife to see if they are theologically and philosophically
04:00
Consistent Wow, I don't think we're gonna find much consistency amongst all of those of course and he says we'll look at near -death experiences both in Western culture and throughout the world and Really look at what they're all about and ask the questions
04:17
Do they indicate something about an afterlife and are they kind of just an illusion or are they hardwired into our brains?
04:25
So newsflash five million dollars in research for that and I think we really have the answer as we would all agree here in the scriptures
04:34
Another question that kind of came up last time when we were talking as a couple translations I had said there were 47 instances in the
04:41
ESV around the words But God being together right but God something but God and The question came up Well, some of the translations use the word and God and others say but God and the question was well
04:55
Why would they do that? There was very little to zero information from a theological perspective around that translation.
05:03
I did some research I looked at a various a bunch of books and a few other things But I came to the conclusion that as I looked at from an
05:10
English perspective The two words are fairly synonymous in most instances and let me tell you so we have and and but are both conjunctions as we talked about last time when
05:22
I was up here and the word and These are a couple ways that and is often used and it doesn't change the context or the meaning of but or and It just adds emphasis
05:32
So the bud is more of an emphasis on it where and is just kind of a and this happens
05:38
Let me give you a couple examples just to help you out here in case your Bibles when we're going through some of these passages say and God instead of but God and It says is to suggest that one idea is
05:49
Chronologically sequential to another this happened and this happened and then this happened And is also used to suggest that one idea is the result of another idea very similar to but all right
06:02
Very similar to but Thirdly and can be used to suggest that one idea is in contrast to another idea so we talked about but being all about contrast and can be used the same way this and this and can also be used to suggest an element of surprise and can be used to suggest that one clause is dependent upon another conditionally and The word and can also suggest a kind of comment on the first clause
06:33
So what about the first portion of that sentence and can be used to help to to bring that up?
06:39
The word but a couple examples here, but is used to suggest a Contrast and that's really what we're looking at here.
06:46
It's all about contrast and we do see that in the in the word and But it says to suggest a contrast that is
06:52
Unexpected in light of the first clause So this happened and then this happened or this happened
06:58
But this happened and as we'll see here this but God dead in sin
07:03
But God right but can also be used to suggest in an affirmative sense
07:09
That the first part of the sentence implied is an is in a negative way to a positive on the other side and lastly but can be used to connect two ideas with the meaning of With the exception of and so forth
07:24
So they really are it but just really gives an emphasis more and it really depends on the translators
07:30
When they decided to use the words and or but Oftentimes the words either
07:35
Greek and or Hebrew were the same and the translators decided to either use the word and or but so I hope
07:40
That answers one of the questions they had last time regarding Why do some translations use the word and and others do not or they use the word but all right?
07:50
So I did want to define but one more time for those who weren't here. The word but is a conjunction
07:57
Which is used to introduce a phrase or a clause contrasting with what has come before Or with what is expected that comes out of the
08:08
Oxford English Dictionary 11th edition So that is the word but and we talked a little bit about a conjunction what a conjunction was
08:16
And again for those of you who know in the past conjunction junction, what's your function? Right make it up words phrases and so forth
08:24
And I I actually read a little bit of it. I didn't sing it last week So but I did read a little bit of it because it actually is very good
08:31
It talks about how and and but and so forth are all used. But so that's kind of where we were
08:38
As I said, we went through a lot of the Old Testament Scripture text and what I really wanted to talk about here
08:44
And and if you're looking to have an outline if you weren't here when I taught last time There were three things we were trying to teach about God when we looked at the words
08:51
But God and those were the following so if you want to take notes, this is the first part We've already covered the last time
08:57
I taught which is how God saves how he saves and again, this was a physical Saving of his people.
09:04
This is how God acted in history or even throughout time to show that He's a saving
09:11
God and we looked at many verses again in the Old Testament that really talks about how God saves
09:17
The second part which we're gonna really focus on today and the third part We'll hope to focus on today is the first is how
09:24
God provides salvation how he provides salvation But God again his his provision of salvation
09:31
Not only physically but spiritually and then lastly how he applies salvation so we're gonna take a look at the application of salvation, but for God right
09:41
God could have even taken and Provided a means of salvation and not even apply it
09:47
But what we'll look at here is God not only provides it but he also applies it to our lives So those are a couple of the areas that we'll look at today
09:56
As I said, we looked at the Garden of Eden last time. We looked at Noah Joseph and his brothers right but God Meant it for good.
10:05
They meant it for evil God meant it for good. We looked at Jacob's blessing with The the remnant of Israel the nation as it would continue but for God working in that area
10:18
God leading the people in the desert We looked at that. I had someone come up to me last week and I'm probably even gonna say it wrong this time
10:25
But I'll try I said circuitous and it's Securitas right securitas right is the word
10:33
I I just liked the word and that was really talking about from point A to point B Is usually a secure
10:41
Securitas route like your GPS usually will take you from A to B the quickest way God when he led the people out of the desert out of Egypt.
10:48
He didn't take them that way He took them a roundabout way a different way than what would have been the quickest way to go into the promised land
10:56
Really to show again his power We talked about Saul As Saul sought
11:02
David and all the different times where it said but God protected David but God kept
11:08
Saul from hurting David and it was all about the Davidic line and how David was to reign as king and God sovereignly protected him
11:19
We talked about in Psalm 49 where it talked about fears in times of trouble as people were saying
11:26
Why God do all these things happen? Why do good people prosper and so forth and yet here
11:31
God says but for God But his own protection We ourselves would be condemned into hell and death and those people will pay
11:39
Eventually for their sins if they don't put their faith and trust in a Savior, right? So but God and we looked at Psalm 73 and we left off just before going into the
11:53
New Testament and I'm not even gonna read this because we probably won't have time but in Acts 7 9 through 10 if you want to take a note on that, this is
12:03
Stephen's speech to The people right to the to the leaders there and this is really where he again is saying that What Joseph's brothers intended for him were evil and yet God intended for good and it really talked about I don't know if you remember last time when we taught one of the things that we talked about is that God delivered not only
12:26
Israel which this part of this text talks about in Acts 7 9 it really kind of focuses on Israel itself being saved from famine
12:36
But we talked about in the Old Testament God we see oftentimes saving even the Egyptians and the others from famine
12:42
It was due to Joseph's Ability to save food and and keep people alive in other nations and some of these nations were ones that were directly going against Israel All right.
12:55
Any questions just from a quick Overview of what we taught a couple weeks back what
13:00
I had talked about a couple weeks back. All right Excellent, so let's go what
13:08
I'd like to do is again as we did last time I had a couple of people read so I'm gonna ask people to volunteer to read if they don't mind
13:14
Loud enough so people can hear but let's take a look at the second part This is but God provides a means of salvation
13:21
So let's look at where God provides a means of salvation to people Not only does he save them but how he provides a means of salvation and first we want to look in Genesis 21
13:31
Genesis 21 11 through 13 Genesis 21 11 through 13 anyone want to read that text for me
13:38
Genesis 21 11 through 13 Yes, sir.
14:13
Excellent. Thank you, sir. So here what do we see? What is this contrast? We have but God said to Abraham but God we're talking here about Hagar and Ishmael in most instance
14:23
You know in most cases here from a context perspective. What is the contrast that we see here though? What is
14:28
God providing? What is this means of salvation that we see? anybody
14:38
We don't see it So God's continuing to keep his promise right to the nation of Abraham We see that God is gracious, even though he's providing a nation.
14:48
Is he providing a nation just for Isaac? We actually see another nation here. This is actually a nation that today has grown up to be
14:56
Islam in most instances and is trying to take over Christianity and kill it out and yet God actually protected
15:04
Hagar and Ishmael through a promise But it's really about Isaac and the nation that will grow out of Isaac, right?
15:12
It is showing God's saving power as we go throughout time here All right, turn with me to Psalm 40
15:21
Psalm 40 6 through 8 Psalm 46 through 8 Anyone want to read
15:27
Psalm 46 through 8? Yes 46 through 8.
15:36
Yep. Psalm 40 verses 6 through 8 Excellent.
15:57
Thank you the but God here. You're gonna say well, where's the but God? I don't I don't see the but God anywhere the but God here is actually implied
16:03
So I'm gonna tell you you're not gonna see it say but God directly here, right?
16:08
But you've given me open ears a few other areas. But what are we talking about here in Psalm 40?
16:13
What is Psalm 40 all about? When in relation to God's saving people
16:19
What is this? It's one word. It's a very important word from a theological perspective
16:26
Redeemer what else is it? I'm looking for a special word starts with an eye deliver Redeemer Christ coming to earth as a man is his
16:37
Incarnation this verse is all about the incarnation of Christ, right? So although it's not direct it is implied here and we see the discussion the contrasting here is man to the incarnation of Christ to who
16:51
Jesus is and what he will be and Actually a commentator said this in Paul's view
16:58
This passage has more meaning than the mere expression of grateful devotion to God's service
17:04
He represents Christ as declaring that the sacrifices whether vegetable or animal general or special Offerings would not avail to meet the demands of God's law and that he had come to render the required satisfaction which he states
17:24
What was affected by quote the offering of the body of Christ in quote?
17:33
So does the incarnation it talks about here does the incarnation Christ becoming human form have anything to do with salvation of mankind?
17:41
Does it have anything to do with salvation Christ coming to this earth. I Got a couple head now.
17:49
Wow, you guys are all asleep today. I got to talk louder. I think Yeah, of course it does right?
17:54
This is all about Christ coming and if he didn't come he could never have died for sin
18:01
Right. This is God coming in human form To take on our punishment and we'll see that shortly
18:08
All right next verse, let's look at Isaiah 53 Isaiah 53 most of you have this verse memorized one form or another
18:17
Isaiah 53 who wants to read 4 verses 4 through 6 4 through 6
18:22
Isaiah 53 4 through 6. Yes, sir Isaiah 53 4 through 6
18:54
Excellent. Thank you. So this is Christ's death, right? This is the death of Jesus we're talked about is talked about here, right?
19:03
This is a verse that most of us cherish dearly as we read it. Where's the but God though? Where's the but God?
19:11
Do we see it Do we see verse 5 Everyone see verse 5
19:17
It's talking about Christ But God still right we have the second person of the
19:23
Trinity here, but God is in view It's Christ's being willing to be pierced for our transgressions to be crushed for our
19:32
Iniquities upon him was a chastisement that brought us peace Right this whole but God here is
19:39
Jesus Christ and him coming Providing salvation to mankind to those who will put their faith and trust in him
19:49
So what's the great contrast we see here? Why is this a but God type of verse? What is the contrast?
19:54
What aspect is in view? What's this contrast we see?
20:10
Yeah That's what we should be right. We should be the ones who have had all this occur to us.
20:17
We should be crushed Right, we should be beaten We should be wounded and yet Christ willingly laid his life down for sinners
20:30
That's a great contrast but for God if Christ had not done this We would all be Destined for hell as we talked about at the very beginning of this of this class, right?
20:40
We all deserve to go there based on our own sins. And yet here we have we have Christ dying on the cross his death
20:49
Provides salvation to his people. All right, New Testament acts 10
20:55
Acts 10 who wants to read acts 10 28 and 29 for me small verses 28 and 29 of acts 10
21:06
Yes, sir. Excellent.
21:39
Thank you. What is the but God we have here? Most of us should be very thankful for this but God if we really understand what it's talking about.
21:47
What is it Bruce? Yeah, so here's
21:54
God providing salvation not only to the Jew but we have God providing salvation to the Gentile people and I would assume most of us here are
22:02
Gentile in in origin. So this is a critical verse for us where God has opened up and provided a means of salvation
22:10
One commentary said this the Jewish traditions of purity made it virtually impossible for them
22:16
Jews and with Gent to associate with Gentiles without becoming ritually unclean a
22:23
Jew couldn't even be in the presence in most cases of a Gentile without being essentially claimed to be unclean
22:32
One other commentator said this Peter followed the Jewish standards and traditions His whole life his comments here reveal his acceptance of a new standard in which
22:43
Jews No longer were to be considered were to consider Gentiles profane another commentator said this
22:51
Sums it up very well in Jesus Christ neither circumcision nor uncircumcision availeth anything
22:58
For by his finished work the door of the gospel has been opened to whomever believeth whoever nation
23:07
What whatever nation one may be of? Though far remote from the seed of Abraham though even so What was
23:19
I here? I'm sorry so despicable That will be no print.
23:25
There will be no prejudice for him If he will receive God's appointment sack appointed sacrifice for the remission of sin
23:33
So it really talks about any tribe nation people group so forth. God has opened it up to everybody
23:40
It's no longer exclusively for the Jews that God has provided a means of salvation And that is really a major but God aspect here
23:49
So here we see in this verse right God has provided a means of salvation for both the Jew and the Gentile Or any non
23:56
Jew as they would claim right there were only two classes of people back then you're either a Jew or a Gentile and apart from this all of us would first need to become
24:04
Jews follow the Mosaic Law and Try to work our way to heaven as pastor Steve talked about today, which is an impossible feat for any of us
24:11
So but God provided this means of salvation right by opening up Salvation to not only the
24:19
Jews but also to the Gentiles Acts 10 acts 10 39 and 40 39 through 41 who would read acts 10 39 through 41
24:32
Acts 10 39 Yes, sir. Acts 10 39 through 41.
24:42
See if you can find out what this but God is excellent
25:08
So for those of you who have a different translation, but Tom, I'm not sure what you have verse 40 is but God But God is verse 40 at least in the in the
25:17
English Standard Version was that the ESV I mean the NASB New King James, okay
25:23
Again doesn't change the context of what we're talking about here. But in verse 40 says but God raised him on the third day
25:30
What are we talking here? What's this contrast? What is this but God talking about here? What is
25:38
Christ accomplished in these verses? Through what how
25:47
Through the resurrection, right? This is all about not solely the resurrection because we're gonna get to a couple verses specifically to the resurrection
25:53
But this is all about Christ's power over death This is his ability to Have or he always has had it but showing his ability or his power that he's had over death from the very beginning
26:05
I mean, what a great verse we have here talking about the resurrection, but we're gonna see that in a couple more verses
26:10
So this specifically I myself as I wrote this material have to say it's not about the resurrection It's about power over death, right?
26:17
It's Christ power over death. It's great great verse on the resurrection also So what do we see here?
26:23
We see a means of that. God has made for salvation possible based on these verses, right? We have Christ's death We see that we'll see next some on the resurrection
26:33
But again, this is God's sovereignty Christ's sovereignty over death, which he's always had Although death may be an enemy of man
26:41
Right God fully controls death and knows when where and how each one of us will die
26:48
Right, we've ever wondered do we have an expiration date on us God has an expiration date on us
26:54
He knows when each and every one of us how when where and why we're gonna die
27:01
Is that an amazing thought? Right. We have a birthday when we were born, but yet we have a death day that God knows already
27:08
He's sovereign over that All right, so he's got power over death One commentator said this regarding this text
27:16
Peter gave personal testimony to the truth of those reports Especially the fact of Christ's resurrection
27:23
Then declared that Christ's resurrection made salvation possible for all who believe in him whether Jew or Gentile again, this is
27:32
Christ making or the but God that we're talking about here is the Ability that God has provided salvation.
27:39
He has provided a means of salvation So the resurrection we kind of gave it away, but look at let's look at acts 13 acts 13
27:50
Acts 13 29 through 31 Acts 13 29 through 31 who wants to read that for me acts 13 29 through 31
28:01
I Almost grabbed you because you were actually scratching your head over here And I thought you were actually raising your hand at the same time
28:07
Brian. Would you read that for us, please? Acts 13 29 through 31? Yeah Wow So this is it right?
28:32
This is what Easter is all about. This is the resurrection. This is Christ who was put to death for ourself as we saw in Isaiah 53 and yet raised from the dead right verse 30 here, but God raised him from the dead, but God raised him from the dead
28:49
Guess what God did he raised him from the dead. This is all about the resurrection of Jesus Christ raised from the dead for our
28:59
Sake to bring salvation to us Listen to what one commentator said about this verse
29:06
Said this quote the removal of the body and its placement in the tomb underlines
29:12
The full reality of the death of Christ He was dead and buried
29:19
This heightens the contrast with the next statement But God raised him from the dead the emphasis on the burial also prepares for the explanation of Psalm talks about Psalm 16 10 and in verses 34 through 37 it is the contrast between the seeming defeat of the cross as most had seen it that way and the victory of the resurrection
29:47
So familiar in Peter's speeches And he says quote you killed him, but God raised him from the dead
29:55
It's exactly what Peter was preaching and teaching. It's all about the resurrection of Jesus Christ Apart from the resurrection again, all of us would be damned to hell but God But God do we wake up each morning and say?
30:10
But God I get to breathe But for God's sake my heart continues to beat but for God's sake
30:18
I can even get out of bed but God This is about God's saving power his provision of salvation
30:29
Let's look in Romans 5 again a verse very common to most of you Romans 5 Romans 5 6 through 9
30:36
Romans 5 6 through 9 who wants to read that for me 6 through 9 Romans 5 way in the back
31:23
Excellent, thank you What is this contrast? What is it here that we're talking about?
31:28
What is this but God that we see? Yeah, he went to the cross for us, right?
31:44
He took the punishment that we should all be hung on a cross whipped beaten and dying for our sins
31:51
Probably the thousands that we create on a daily basis before him and yet Christ took that punishment
31:59
Let me read what one commentator says here of this verse again a great verse it says this
32:07
Justly famous verse is the apex of biblical statements on divine love
32:13
Anyone who loves another person tries to give concrete proof of that love via certain actions
32:19
We're talking about human love here in most cases Perhaps buying a present or flowers or surprising this person with a romantic getaway
32:29
But God provides the depths of his love in a way none of us would want to do
32:34
By giving his son to die for others Yet it is this yet it is far more than that He did he did so while we were still sinners and enemies of him that is
32:54
When we were his enemies Godless sinners he died for us
33:00
This is the primary point Paul is making here in this text Christ did not die for the righteous people or for friends
33:08
He died for sinful human beings in all their degrading depravity
33:14
For those who suppress the truth by their wickedness as we see in Romans 1 18 and do not think it worthwhile to remain retain the knowledge of God Who are filled with every kind of wickedness evil greed and depravity
33:33
Therefore we deserve to experience the full wrath of God and eternal judgment but Christ but Christ One more time, but Christ took our punishment upon himself and paid the penalty in our place
33:51
Thereby procuring Redemption on our behalf but God Now if that doesn't make you tear up as it does me.
34:07
I don't know what will John MacArthur says this in one of his commentaries on the book of Romans in the same verse
34:17
The most overwhelming truth of the gospel is that God loved sinful fallen rebellious
34:25
Mankind so much That he gave his only begotten Son That whoever believes in him
34:34
Should not perish but have eternal life and as the
34:39
Apostle proclaims here in verse 9 of this passage in the present chapter It says if God loved us was so great a love before we were saved
34:50
When we were still his enemies how much more does he love us now But God a ton more can be said on this verse don't have a lot of time
35:07
Let's move on to 1st Corinthians 1st Corinthians 3 1st Corinthians 3
35:14
Verses 6 and 7 1st Corinthians 3 verses 6 and 7 Who would like to read that Bruce?
35:22
1st Corinthians 3 verses 6 and 7. Thank you,
35:39
Bruce What's our contrast here? What's this but God what's he providing here in this text?
35:48
What's he providing? I'm sorry Salvation but what do we see the growth of what do we see?
36:02
Yes Yes And I think I heard it even over here, too. I Heard someone say church
36:09
Church, right? This is all about the church the Saints Preachers teachers those who will study the word those who will proclaim the message those who are willing to stand up and to Teach what they know of the word he provides people so we don't have to stay at home and Fumble through it on our own in a lot of cases.
36:34
He gives us these people that can help us and it's even a place that we know that is not for great people in most cases most of us here are broken and sinners and and in need of various things and yet God gives us a fellowship that we can have as brothers and sisters in Christ It does.
36:56
Yes Yeah, yes, yeah, we can do a lot of the work there's a lot of work that happens in a church
37:04
There's a lot of people necessary, but we know God is the one who actually does the growth Right as much as we do or or say or try to do it's all about and for God's glory
37:15
I have that in my notes here Right. Only he has the ability to make things grow One commentator said this of this verse it said the human instruments are nothing
37:26
But God is everything because apart from him no results would follow
37:34
It's critical that we understand that God provides the means of salvation not in not exclusively through the church
37:42
But yet the church is a big portion of teaching and preaching about God's Word and providing people with a means of understanding what this
37:49
Salvation is that we need let's look at Ephesians 2
37:55
Ephesians 2 1 through 10 a long verse who was up for reading long set of verses here
38:02
Ephesians 2 again a very common Set of verses Charlie you want to read verses 1 through 10 for us, please
38:37
Thank you, Charlie. Now. We could have stopped at verse 4 What does I read and read
38:42
I said we got to keep adding more because it's such rich material here But the but God that we're talking about here is verse 4
38:51
But God being rich in mercy because of his great love with which he loved us
38:58
Right, what do we see here? What's this contrast? What is this but God? What is this means of salvation that's provided to?
39:06
Those who put their faith and trust in Christ. What is it here? What's the contrast? Total depravity of God's grace and his mercy, right?
39:18
Bruce Hmm. I know why
40:01
I couldn't stop right at verse 4 had to keep going because it is it's all -inclusive here It's a great text that really shows and really what
40:08
I boil it down to the one thing here that I said It's all about God's salvation It's all about his provision of salvation in of itself, right?
40:17
This is salvation right here one commentator said this Note that even
40:23
Abraham was a trophy of God's grace saved out of paganism This is one of the many exciting but God passages of the
40:33
Bible here Ephesians 2 4 So even Abraham as much as great of a guy great of a person that he was was a pagan a sinner before God's eyes and yet all of us still continue to war in front of God and But God providing salvation again, we would all be destined for hell where we belong
40:56
Another great quote said this The words here, but God form one of the most significant eloquent and inspiring
41:06
Transitions of all literature. It's a pretty big words, right all literature they indicate that a
41:14
Stupendous change has taken place It is a change from the doom and despair of the valley of death to the unspeakable delights of the kingdom of the son of God's love
41:26
The author of the change is God himself No one else could have done it and no one else would
41:38
Charlie correct
42:06
Correct. Yeah by ourselves. We would never even desire that right? It really is God's work from the beginning all the way through to the end, right?
42:15
We may be doing it, but he still gets the glory for it because he's the one that led us to do that, too Right. So yeah, that's true.
42:21
That's true. Good great comment Another commentator said this on this verse the magnificent change which
42:28
God has affected is jubilantly set sounded forth his gracious Initiative and sovereign actions stand in wonderful contrast with the hopeless condition of fallen humanity
42:42
Which has been described in verses 1 through 3 men and women outside of Christ Were the object of divine wrath?
42:51
but God Had mercy on them. They were dead, but he has made them alive with Christ we were in bondage to evil powers, but God has seated us with Christ in the heavenly realms a
43:05
Completely new situation has arisen because he has taken every necessary step to reverse our condition in sin
43:15
Question Comment God's already ordained everything in our lives right from the beginning to the end our birth our parents where we live
43:52
The time that we are in now God controls all of that Wow running out of time already
44:00
All right. Let me Wow, we may have to do a part three
44:10
Let's let's quickly do James 4 1 through 7 James 4 1 through 7
44:15
There's so much more on on the previous verses here that I could read but James 4 1 through 7
44:23
Who wants to read James 4 1 through 7? I'm sorry for 4 through 7 not even 1 through 7
44:29
James 4 Verses 4 through 7 who read that for me pretty Thank you.
45:10
So verse 6 we see the the but God here right but he but God based on your translation
45:15
That he will be capitalized others will not this is specifically talking of God, right, but he gives more grace
45:21
We're talking about God here again. What's the contrast we see here in this verse in James? What's the big contrast?
45:34
Yes Yeah, it's all about grace to the humble right the broken those who
45:41
God himself has Graced and has brought along right apart from that.
45:47
We would actually be An adulterous nation as they talk about your spiritually spiritual adulterers and so forth, right?
45:55
Yet we got scripture providing an ant an antidote here Which is God's grace to those who will willingly humble themselves before our own
46:03
Savior. All right So grace to the humble that's James 4 4 through 7.
46:12
So as Christians in this verse Where should our friendship be directed as Christians to God right pretty clear to God?
46:24
Yet the opposite right God gives to the proud Right pride is the center of all sin as we talked about earlier.
46:31
We talked about pride and If we really get to the nature of any sin, it's all about pride. It's all about me.
46:37
I'm better I'd know better I can do better and so forth. It's all about pride and yet those who humble themself and become
46:49
You know, it's it's hard from a humility perspective to say boy I sure am humble Yet we we understand when that truly happens when we are humbled, right?
47:01
It's not that we are happy to say we're humble or human that we're our
47:10
Yes, thank you Yes, it's our focus not on ourselves or the world. It truly is a focus on God I'm gonna have to end there
47:20
Any quick questions Sorry, it extended out even a little bit further.
47:25
I thought I could get through it we didn't have a ton the next couple verses, but maybe another time we can actually talk about how
47:31
God applies salvation and Just a couple hints on that. We we have election
47:38
Salvation in of itself and the perseverance of the Saints Those are areas that we would be looking at next time to talk about but God again
47:47
So any questions? Okay Let's pray
47:56
Lord. We thank you. We praise you one more time Or that we were able to look into your word
48:03
Lord so often We are pride -filled. We are ones who desire what is best for ourselves.
48:11
We're selfish But God You have come and stepped into time and you have loved sinners
48:23
Those who spit in your face those who whipped Jesus those who nailed the cross and Lord, even those of us today who oftentimes fail you and not being obedient But God Lord if there are any there any here today that do not know you we would pray
48:46
Lord That they would humbly fall on their knees and cry out to you and say
48:52
I am a wretched sinner but God Who is rich in mercy?
48:58
willing to save those Who will put their faith and trust in him? Lord, we thank you for your word that you have shown us the great contrast between ourselves and you
49:10
As a loving and saving God We ask now Lord that you would just be with us as we
49:17
Depart either from here or as we listen to your word in the later service We thank you and we praise you and all these things
