I like this already. So tell me more. Well, you see, for a long time now, it's been the job of a church pastor or elder to help people with their problems.

But we both know that's not very fun, so most people would rather farm that job out to other professionals.

Yeah, taking the time to get to know people in your congregation and give them biblical counsel is way too much work.

Exactly, sir. The beauty of it is that people will always have problems. They'll have problems with their marriages and addictions and other sins.

So there will always be a business opportunity awaiting. All we have to do is figure out how to exploit people's desperation and brokenness.

And we'll call it biblical counseling or Christian counseling or something like that. Although I guess it's going to be tough to convince people that it's okay for Christians to be putting a price on friendship and wise advice.

Well, we can slowly phase out the normal expectation by convincing people little by little that only people who have specialized training can help others with their spiritual and emotional problems.

Bible, are the best people to give you counsel? No, actually, most people think that someone who has never met you before and is only taking the time to listen to you because you're giving them money, that person is the best person to give you counsel.

Amazing. You know, I once asked my mom, how do I know if someone is a sincere, trustworthy, truthful friend?

So... Okay, but have you ever thought that charging money for biblical counsel will massively compromise the entire thing?

How so? I mean, it's pretty simple. The counselor will be tempted to draw out the case so that the person keeps coming back as many times as possible because the longer it takes the person to find healing, the more money the counselor will make.

If you charge people money, the person being counseled will always be wondering, does this person actually have my best interests in mind?

Whoopsie. So are you saying we shouldn't do this after all? Nah, it'll probably be fine. We'll just incessantly repeat the idea that people won't value what they don't pay for until everyone believes it.

That is one of my favorite verses. And we could even make people feel bad for the counselors by pointing out that they might starve to death if they don't charge to exhort and encourage people with God's Word.

Even worse, they might not be able to pay off their school loans. Yeah, it's not like we could expect these people to be supported by the free generosity of God's people so that they can do ministry without compromising sincerity.
