Transcript
The Book of Amos is written roughly in 760
BC and Amos was a prophet to the northern tribes. The overarching theme is one of judgment and it is one that shows that God is the sovereign ruler of the universe.
He's in charge of everything. Even though all the nations rebel against him and his authority, yet he is still in sovereign control.
There's nothing that he is not in control of. And so even though it was a time of prosperity politically under the secure reign of Jeroboam II, we end up seeing that Amos has two primary focuses.
One is because of the sin of Israel in their lack of worship to the true
God. And the second sin that it addresses is the lack of justice with their people.
So you end up seeing both vertically and horizontally, they lack the worship of God and the justice with one another.
And this is the themes that we end up seeing throughout this book. Now as we look at the
Book of Amos, we realize that God's promise is a divine justice.
That there is divine justice coming. But God still has a covenant people that he will restore fully one day.
