Hey guys, Colin here, and welcome back to Fight for Truth. In this video, we need to talk about the kind of Bible teaching that we definitely don't need.
00:15
So, I'm going to give a disclaimer here. I'm not really sure who the pastor is in the video you're about to watch. I tried to find him, but I couldn't.
00:22
Frankly, it doesn't really matter because what you're about to see in this video is the kind of very common teaching that passes almost all the time in modern evangelical megachurches.
00:32
Here, we have a trendy Christian podcast, you know the type, with some sort of Bible teacher who thinks he's about to blow your mind, but in reality, he's just super confused.
00:41
Watch this. Say something that's going to make, if you're really religious and you're a church person, you've been around it for a long time,
00:46
I'm going to say something that's going to bother you for a second. The fact that God forgives means people are more important to him than his rules.
01:00
People are more important to God than the Ten Commandments. That shook somebody up somewhere.
01:07
Well, it's what drove the Pharisees nuts about Jesus. Okay, well, let's just break that down. Yeah. All right, let's break this video down.
01:14
First things first, the guy in the clip comes right out of the gate saying, brace yourself, I'm about to say something that's going to make a lot of church people really angry at me.
01:23
And in modern megachurch culture, for some reason, they absolutely love doing this. I'm not sure what gets them so excited about it.
01:30
One of their favorite tactics is to say things that Christians who have been in church their whole lives will disagree with.
01:37
I can't tell you how many times in all of my research, I've heard them say things like, I'm about to make all the church people in the building angry.
01:44
I'm about to upset all the people who have been in church their whole life. I'm about to blow your mind. Can I just ask a simple question about comments like this?
01:51
Why is this your goal? Why do you care so much about upsetting Christians who have been attending church for years?
01:58
I mean, oftentimes it's your church that they've been attending. Why is this something that you take so much pride in?
02:04
I'm not sure what their answer would be, but I have my own theory. I think that these pop churches want to design their church services for unbelievers to feel extremely comfortable.
02:15
And unbelievers don't tend to like people who are serious about church and about their faith. So as a result, the modern trendy pastor will do everything he can to publicly diminish and even demoralize the serious
02:28
Christian so that he can appeal to the broader audience. But secondly, we need to talk about the core of this message, because it sounds really clever and creative at first, but it's actually not at all.
02:40
Let me explain. The guy in the clip says people are more important to God than the
02:45
Ten Commandments. Again, this idea might sound promising and interesting and exciting until you realize that it has absolutely no foundation.
02:53
You see, the core idea underneath this question is the assumption that God cannot care both for his people and also care for his commandments.
03:03
He must pick one or the other to be more important. But why is that the case? Well, the guy in the video never actually explains this.
03:11
He just assumes it. That's the problem. The fact is, there is absolutely no tension in Scripture between God's people and God's moral law.
03:20
God did not give up his laws in order to save people. And to suggest that is to miss the whole point of the gospel.
03:27
To illustrate this, let's watch the next clip as he tells us a little bit more of what he means. Watch this.
03:34
Have we all broken the Ten Commandments? Yes or no? Yes. Is it possible that we can still be saved?
03:40
Yes. That must mean that's also a prerequisite for us being saved is you got to first be a sinner.
03:47
Well, you got to admit that you've broken his commands. But the fact that he made a way above and beyond the rules means relationship with people trumps the rules.
03:56
So here we have more of the same faulty thinking. If anyone is saved, despite breaking the Ten Commandments, that must mean that God doesn't really care all that much about his
04:05
Ten Commandments, right? This exposes yet another blatantly unbiblical idea at the man's worldview.
04:12
And bigger than that, this is an idea that is extremely common in modern megachurch culture.
04:17
You see, the fact is God does not save people by noticing the fact that they have broken his holy law and then just simply choosing not to care about that.
04:26
That's not his process. No, that would defeat the whole purpose. I mean, think about it. Why exactly would
04:32
Jesus have to come to earth and die a brutal death on a cross just so that God could turn around and immediately say, psych,
04:38
I didn't really care about things like law and sacrifice anyway. Sorry, Jesus. No, Christ came to earth and lived a perfect life according to the standard of the law.
04:47
Romans 8 3. Now that Jesus has fulfilled the law's requirements, we can believe in him accepting his sacrifice.
04:55
And in this way, the law is actually fulfilled within us. Romans 8 4. And then the
05:00
Lord sanctifies us so that we can fulfill his law even more. In other words, the original problem is that we have broken
05:07
God's rules, God's holy law and character. And the solution is not that God sent
05:12
Jesus into the world to announce the good news that he has all of a sudden decided to ignore said law.
05:19
No, instead, Jesus came to keep the law and provide atonement for us so that we can be forgiven for trespassing it.
05:26
Now, you might be an average evangelical watching this and think to yourself, what is all this high and mighty theology talk have to do with anything?
05:34
Aren't you missing the whole point of what the guy actually said, that we need to care more about people than about rules and theology and stuff like that?
05:41
That's a fair question. But the fact is, the things I've brought to you here are not small or irrelevant or niche topics of theology.
05:49
Look at your Bible. The things I'm talking about strike at the very heart of the gospel message and the character of Jesus.
05:56
If what this man is saying in the video is true, then there are serious implications. For one thing, why exactly are
06:02
Christians always talking about sin? Sin, after all, is breaking God's law. And as we've already covered,
06:08
God doesn't really care all that much about his law, at least not nearly as much as he cares about other things. And if that is the case, why on earth should we care about it?
06:16
Things like adultery, murder, theft, etc. These are all part of the Ten Commandments. If none of these things matter more than people, as the man says, then why do we care about them so much?
06:26
And shouldn't we change that? This is the kind of absurdity that you are led into if you accept the ideas that the guy in the video is describing.
06:35
Here's another question. Who was Jesus? Was Jesus a Middle Eastern hippie who came to earth to tell us that rules don't matter, man, all you need is love, bro?
06:44
No. Unfortunately, though, this is the kind of thing that many megachurches effectively believe about Jesus, even though it's not accurate.
06:52
And the irony is that the law of God, the commandments of the Lord, are not separate from loving people in the slightest.
06:59
If you truly want to love the people around you, you can do that by obeying God's commandments.
07:05
Romans 13 .10 says, quote, love does no wrong to a neighbor. Therefore, love is the fulfilling of the law.
07:12
So please stop listening to so -called pastors who offer shallow teaching like this. Many of them have good intentions and they're nice enough people, but that doesn't mean you should be taught by them or accept their ideas.
07:24
Instead, find a good church with sound biblical teaching and worship there for the glory of God.
