- 00:00
- The revival here at Asbury is now in its sixth night as hundreds of people have come from near and far to just enjoy the presence of God.
- 00:08
- Even though it's almost midnight, this auditorium is still packed with people that are still coming in.
- 00:16
- Nick Hall, thank you so much for taking a few minutes. You're down at Asbury University right now, so it's been a busy day for you.
- 00:24
- Yeah, so like I think most people that are here, I just felt stirred to come, and so I traveled from Minneapolis yesterday.
- 00:35
- I got here yesterday afternoon and have been here now, you know, 24 hours. But the people have been here for now six days, so they just crossed 144 hours, which is, in 1970, there was a revival that happened here that went 144 hours, so they just passed that.
- 00:55
- And man, it's amazing what God is doing here in Asbury, at Asbury University and in Kentucky, and you can just feel the hunger.
- 01:03
- It's real. And the good news is a lot of people are starting to think more about what happens when you die.
- 01:10
- They're becoming much more interested in the spiritual life, which has been basically extinguished in the public square for a long time.
- 01:15
- So here's a sign that people are becoming more interested. Asbury University, which is a private Christian college in Wilmore, Kentucky, outside Lexington, began hosting a prayer service a week ago, but it never ended.
- 01:27
- It's still going on. People just keep showing up from around the world. The university has even set up overflow chapels to accommodate demand.
- 01:34
- Here's what it looks like. There are many people on one side of things affirming that this is a legitimate move of God, this is revival.
- 02:17
- They're trying to stir things up in their own churches, and they're traveling there. I've even seen posts of people saying, hey,
- 02:23
- I was kind of skeptical, but I went and experienced it for myself, and I can tell you that this is of God, this is a revival, this is legit.
- 02:31
- Now on the other side of things, you have people being very skeptical about what's happening.
- 02:37
- People saying that this is just experience -driven emotionalism, and we need to beware, and they're warning against this type of thing.
- 02:46
- So that's kind of two very different reactions from Christian social media. So we keep hearing about this.
- 02:52
- There haven't been many news stories on it, but it's all over social media, on TikTok, actually, of all places, and reports that people are flying in from Singapore and New Zealand to join whatever this is, and so we thought it'd be worth finding out what is it.
- 03:06
- Alison Perfater is the student body president at Asper University, and she joins us. Alison, you're so nice to come on.
- 03:12
- Thank you. What is this, do you think? Right, what is this?
- 03:17
- That's what we, I mean, that's the question, right? And a theme, or a Bible verse that we've all been sharing with each other is
- 03:24
- Habakkuk 1, and the Lord says, look at the nations and watch, for I'm doing something in your day that you wouldn't believe if you were told, and it's happening, and we can hardly believe it.
- 03:34
- Well, it seems remarkable. I mean, so many stories, you see them, and you think, that's very different. I'm not quite sure what it means, but it's worth learning more.
- 03:41
- So my understanding is this began in a completely conventional service, and a boy got up and started talking about his own flaws, and then it just, something changed in the atmosphere, and it never ended.
- 03:54
- Is that fair? That's completely what happened. So here at Asper University, three mornings a week, we have chapel at 10 a .m.
- 04:02
- sharp. The whole student body gets together, and we sing praise to the Lord, and we hear a message from a speaker, and for seemingly no reason at first, on Wednesday, February 8th, it didn't end, and that's kind of the logistical side of what's been going on, and then, you know, on the deeper side of things, what's been happening here since Wednesday is, there's a young army of believers who are rising to claim
- 04:25
- Christianity, the faith as their own, as a young generation, and as a free generation, and that's why people can't get enough.
- 04:33
- That's amazing. So you felt like something like this was going to happen, because everything finds equilibrium,
- 04:39
- I think. Who are the people who are coming? Where are they coming from? We don't know most of them.
- 04:47
- We've obviously been getting calls, hundreds of calls to the university switchboard number, but we have friends here from Brazil, from Indonesia, almost every state, and they just keep coming, and it's no wonder, you know, and it's like you said,
- 05:04
- I mean, especially in the midst of tragedies, like what we've seen in Michigan State University, and even farther back to 2020, especially our generation was impacted so much, and so you have to wonder, you know, what's going to break, and in this case, the
- 05:17
- Holy Spirit has interceded for us here at Asbury and across the nation. I assume you don't know how long this will continue?
- 05:27
- I could not tell you, and I wouldn't want to guess. No, you wouldn't. Alison, thank you.
- 05:33
- Great to see you. Appreciate it. Thank you, really, thank you. In the last two evenings, we've estimated well over 3 ,000 people that are here and at these different locations to worship the
- 05:52
- Lord. Were you prepared for this? No, there is no, there's no playbook for this.
- 05:58
- We're still trying to create some space for what's happening here, and so that's delicate balance, and we're trying to manage that as thoughtfully and faithfully as we can, and just steward what's happening on campus.
- 06:09
- So when I walked in, there was maybe 20 or 30 people scattered throughout the chapel.
- 06:15
- People were either sitting quietly or talking to one another. There was a young woman on the stage with a guitar singing songs, and I don't even think she was amplified.
- 06:23
- She was just up there singing, and most people were not singing along. They were just sort of sitting quietly, and so I found a seat, and I sat and just sat there for a little while.
- 06:32
- I closed my eyes. I prayed. I said, Lord, give me eyes to see. Give me ears to hear and wisdom to discern truth.
- 06:40
- Now, I'll give you my own subjective feeling, and that is that it felt very sweet. There was nothing weird going on.
- 06:46
- It was very calm. It felt very similar to what I experience at churches across the country every
- 06:52
- Sunday who are waiting with expectation for a service to start, so there's nothing unusual about that.
- 06:58
- I did not encounter any sort of powerful force that some people are describing.
- 07:03
- Just this is my subjective feelings, and this is why it's important we don't trust our feelings, right?
- 07:09
- We have to discern through our feelings. You know, what I think is so fascinating is, and you touched on it, is that this happened really almost at the exact same time in 1970.
- 07:20
- It was early February, and then also another interesting fact is that that revival in 1970 fed into a revival that happened at Lee University, and we're seeing some of that start to happen now there at Lee University.
- 07:40
- I was definitely a bit skeptical at first just because growing up with my church, we never had anything like this, and so I just wasn't used to the idea of a revival, but the longer it's gone on,
- 07:52
- I've realized that if God wants it to happen, it's going to happen. My prayer is that this will encourage churches, encourage pastors, encourage just believers, and just stir up a hunger for the
- 08:01
- Lord because, again, it's not about Asbury. It's about Jesus. The fire that started here at Asbury is reportedly spreading as students from nearly two dozen other college campuses have come here to take part in the services, and what
- 08:15
- God started here a week ago is showing no signs of stopping. As far as I can judge,
- 08:21
- I have no reason to think that God isn't working something really beautifully in the hearts of the students at Asbury.
- 08:28
- I've had experiences like that, especially when I was younger. I'll be honest with you, coming from a bit of a charismatic background,
- 08:35
- I've seen this type of thing a lot, so I will admit to you my bias that I come to it with a bit of skepticism because I can't tell you how many 24 -hour worship services
- 08:45
- I took part in and 24 -hour quote -unquote revivals and things like that, which really were more just experience driven.
- 08:53
- But I have no reason to think that what God is working in these students is not real, so that's not really the point of making this video.
- 09:00
- The point of making this video is that I do have three concerns with how it's been responded to, okay?
- 09:07
- And the first one is how we define revival. The second one is the social media component, and the third one is the vulnerability when something like this happens, the vulnerability of it being co -opted by something else, okay?
- 09:21
- Don Coleman Jr. Instagram saying, young lady gets free from demon during Asbury revival after having seizure after stranger began casting it out.
- 09:32
- And let's just play this, and let's see what happens. You can see down here that there's a commotion in the aisle here.
- 09:41
- Apparently somebody's laying down. I want you to just listen to what they're saying. That's the demon screaming coming over.
- 10:18
- Someone turned that down. But you can see that they're casting demons out at this meeting.
- 10:27
- We need revival. We need an awakening.
- 10:34
- But we cannot simply expect the Holy Spirit to come down and clean up all the mess we've made.
- 10:42
- We have clear direction from the Word of God with regard to what
- 10:49
- He has done through Christ, how He expects us to live, how
- 10:55
- He expects us to order His church. And it does little good for men to cry out for extra biblical manifestations when biblical principle is violated all around us.
- 11:17
- I want you to know this. There is little need for the devil and evil men to oppose a man praying for revival unless he is also laboring for reformation.
- 11:35
- We have been given truth and we cannot simply do what is right in our own eyes and then expect the
- 11:43
- Holy Spirit to come down and bless our labors and our ultimate goal and the ultimate product of revival will be the planting of biblical churches.
- 11:54
- I have the greatest fear that the local church today is despised. Thank you so much for watching.
