Apostolic Council of Prophetic Elders, but not a single one of them actually hears from God and this is no exception.

Although we're not gonna really listen to her wax prophetic today, instead what we're gonna do is we're gonna be listening to a recent lecture, a portion of it, delivered by her at a conference put on by Patricia King and it's all for women.

So this is a women's prophetic conference and all the women there got a prophetic scolding by Cindy Jacobs.

So again, my sincerest apologies. But what we're gonna do today is we're gonna talk about the issue of what's called

Narcissus. This is a phrase, a concept that I didn't actually come up with a real name for it,

Narcissus. I oftentimes get credited for coming up with the name. However, I can't remember the name of the person who actually came up with it.

Narcissus is a term that describes a particular twisting of scripture and back in the days when

I was doing my podcast on a daily basis, you know, I kept calling it narcissistic isogesis and a listener sent me an email and said, you know, you just stick the two together, it should be called

Narcissus. And so the phrase has stuck and I get credit for it, although I think that listener really should.

But alas, but you're gonna hear her narcigeeting a popular text, especially among women's ministry, and it's from the book of Esther, the book of Esther chapter four, perhaps you were born for such a time as this.

And boy, does that get just totally taken out of context. So what we're gonna do today is we're gonna work our way through a large portion of the book of Esther, kind of counterbalance the prophetic scolding that we're gonna get from Cindy Jacobs.

But you're gonna know, this is where we're gonna spend most of our time. And I'm going to kind of help kind of frame the problem, because this is something that Americans and people who've grown up in Western civilization often struggle with.

And that is that everything that you get on television and in the movies, is designed to narcissistically prop you and your ego up.

You know, it's all about following your heart about you achieving your destiny about you fulfilling your purpose.

It's about you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you. And boy, you know, it's hard to knock that out of us because our sinful natures legitimately want to hear messages like this.

So brace yourself, assume the crash position, put your tray tables in the upright and locked position.

If you have a tinfoil pyramid hat, this would be the time to put it on in order to protect yourself from the false prophetic emanations and radiation that's going to be falling out as a result of what we're going to listen to in the front part of this episode of Fighting for the

For Such a Time as This. Here we go. Let's read from the

Bible. Esther 4, I said this earlier, 13 to 14. And Mordecai told them to answer Esther, do not think in your heart that you will escape in the

King's palace any more than any, all the other Jews. For if you remain completely silent, say completely silent.

Let that be, this be an admonishment to you. You cannot be silent in this day. So, no, very beginning of her message, she goes right into Esther 4, completely miss all the context.

And then she does this thing, uh, say the word, uh, you know, you know, what, what, what word did she have people say?

You know, uh, Mordecai told them to answer Esther, do not think in your heart that you will escape in the King's palace any more than any, all the other

Jews. For if you remain completely silent, say completely silent. There it is. And she says, so say completely silent.

That technique, by the way, that is a mind manipulation technique. And so, uh, years ago on the, uh, audio podcast version of Fighting for the

Faith, I actually talked about this and, uh, somebody had sent me some links talking about what this practice legitimately does.

The whole purpose of it is to basically turn off your critical thinking. Let me explain.

So there are certain subconscious things that you're not aware of going on inside of your brain and inside the vagus nerve.

And so when you are listening to somebody, uh, who's a false teacher, the false teacher has got to find a way to circumvent your body's natural inclination to go, wait a second, there's something wrong here and throw red flags and start screaming that there's bovine scatology all over the place.

And so what happens is, is that when somebody gives you an order, they give you a command and they say, say this word, and then everyone says the word.

What that does on the subconscious level is it turns off your ability to do critical thinking because here's how this works.

The person has given you a command and you obey it. Your body says, okay, so we can trust this person.

Yeah. So this is a form of mind control, of manipulation. So if you are attending a church where the pastor's constantly saying, say this word, and then everyone says the word, run.

This is a person who is intentionally deceiving you and knows a technique in order to get your defenses to turn off so that you won't think critically about them.

Just think about that. So anyway, that's where she's at. So out of context, we got into Esther 4.

You were made for such a time as this. And now she's screaming bits and pieces at you of this message.

Listen to me. Let that be an admonishment to you. You cannot be silent in this day. Stop yelling at me, lady.

If you remain completely silent at this time, relief and deliverance will arise for the Jews from another place by you and your father's house.

Ooh, that's serious. We'll perish. We're talking about generation stuff here. Yet. Say yet.

Total. Twisting. Narcissistic twisting of this text. That's not what this text is about, and we'll explain, you know, kind of give you a bigger picture to frame this in, and then we'll actually spend a lot of time in the book of Esther very shortly, but let's listen in a little bit more.

You mean like Jesus? Just asking, you know. Someone who will pay the price to bring the change.

Yeah, that would be Jesus, not you, not me. We're the problem. So already we can see that there's an issue, and so let me frame it this way.

I want you to think about. Narcissistically reading yourself as the hero of biblical text is a twisting of Scripture that tastes great to our fallen sinful nature, but is poisonous to true

Christian faith and piety, and that's what she's doing. She's reading, she's read about a particular hero of the

Bible, and that's Esther, and obviously her uncle Mordecai, completely out of context, and as if somehow this is telling you, you, like Esther, are going to save the day.

You're gonna pay the price, and you're gonna be the one to change the world. Most likely that's not even gonna be close to anything you do in your life, and this puts a heavy burden on people, by the way, but you're gonna note, your sinful fallen nature that you've inherited from Adam and Eve, I have one of them too, loves this stuff.

Oh man, just eats it up. Oh, I am so, I am so important. It's about time that God recognizes just how important that I am.

In fact, He knows how important I am. That's why He made me for such a time as this.

Yeah, this is a complete narcissistic twisting of Scripture, hence the phrase narcissism.

Narcissism is self -love and eisegesis is reading yourself into this text. You and I are not in the story of Esther.

It's not about you, it's not about me. That doesn't mean that there are not real legitimate applications as we look at this text to help us to relate to the difficulties that we find ourselves in.

But here's the thing, is that the majority, and I mean this, this is not by any stretch the totality, but the majority of evangelicals today have about this much depth of understanding as it relates not only to the

Bible, but church history. And there's a big problem as it relates within the

American churches, and I would even say Western churches as a whole. This is a problem still in Western Europe, as well as in Australia and other places where Western civilization is pretty much embedded itself and everyone's watching the same

TV shows on Netflix, okay? Kind of get the idea. And that is, is that we have very little understanding of history in general.

But when it comes to church history or the fact that there have been Christians who have led the way before us, who have wrestled through biblical texts, who are legitimately great guides in helping us to find the real treasure, the real meaning, and the real depth of Scripture, people in the

Western churches not only do not listen to them, they're completely oblivious to them, and they're culturally set up in such a way that they don't, not only do they not know that they exist, if they were told they exist, they wouldn't have the time or patience to deal with that, and that is a problem.

And so, there's a cartoon that I like to point people to in this regard.

If you guys remember Charles Scholl's and the Peanuts cartoon. So, here's

Charlie Brown's sister, and she's writing an essay on church history. And so, she's written in cursive.

Who does that anymore, by the way? Who writes in cursive? Church history. And then, here's what she says, when writing about church history, we have to go back to the very beginning.

Our pastor was born in 1930. Now, we have to update this today.

So, our pastor was born in 1974, 1986, something like this.

But the point is, is that that shows just how far back Christians go in regard to church history.

That's about it. Back to the boomer generation at this point, as if somehow everybody who comes before that doesn't matter.

And as a result of it, we've completely cut ourselves off. And boy, is that a mess. It is a real problem, because the reality is, is that if you were to read and understand the writings of the church fathers, you would not be able to engage in narcissistic eisegesis.

So, how then are we to understand the story of Esther? And I'm going to frame it in a couple of ways.

Number one, we're going to note that the theme of the exile is kind of the overarching theme that we need to be looking at here.

And I'll show you why this works here in a second. But if you think back, okay, back into the history of Judah, they, like the northern kingdom of Israel, went into full apostasy mode, impenitent idolatry, ever -increasing wickedness.

It was a complete mess. And God sent prophet after prophet after prophet to call them to repentance and to get them out of idolatry.

And God assured them that he would forgive them of their sins. But did they repent of their idolatry? No. And sometimes apostasy, like cancer, is so, it gets so bad that extreme measures are the only chance that you have of curing the patient of the disease.

And so, what did God do? Okay, after the prophet Jeremiah, God sent

Judah into exile in Babylon for 70 years.

And by the time they came back at the, you know, so read Ezra and Nehemiah. But when they came back, there was a revival of the love and the reading and the hearing and the understanding of God's Word.

And so, let's just say exile cured them of a lot of things. But the exile itself is a type and shadow, if you would, of, well, the very

Christian life that we live in. And let me show it to you from Scripture. So, in 1 Peter chapter 1,

Peter begins, Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to those who are elect exiles,

Christians, we are exiles. Think of it this way. Have you ever been to the

New Jerusalem? Nope. Neither have I. Have you set foot in the glorified kingdom of Christ, which will appear when

Jesus appears in glory to judge the living of the dead? No. So, the idea here is that every

Christian needs to take this mindset upon themselves. Doesn't matter if you live in the United States, doesn't matter if you live in Western Europe or Australia or other parts of the world,

Nigeria, South Africa, wherever you live. You, as a Christian, were born in exile.

Exile from Christ's kingdom itself. Name for me one of the streets in the

New Jerusalem. How many parks does it have? What's the favorite meeting spot for people there in the

New Jerusalem? You don't know because you've never been there. Neither have I. So, we were born in exile, born under the dominion of darkness, and that's what

Babylon represents in the book of Revelation. I kind of think of it that way. And as a result of it, there's a time when we will be allowed to go home, but not now.

So, every Christian is now an exile, and we are waiting to return to Jerusalem, or in our cases, go there for the first time, right?

So, to those who are elect exiles of the dispersion and Pontius, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, Bithynia, according to the foreknowledge of God the

Father and the sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and for the sprinkling with his blood.

May grace and peace be multiplied to you. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead to an inheritance that is, and listen to what we're gonna inherit as Christians, an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, unfading, kept in heaven for you, who by God's power you are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

This is good stuff. This is just the introductory thoughts here in Peter's first epistle. Now, concerning the salvation, the prophets who prophesied about the grace that was to be yours, they searched and inquired carefully, inquiring what person or time the

Spirit of Christ in them was indicating when he predicted the sufferings of Christ and the subsequent glories.

It was revealed to them that they were not serving, that they were serving not themselves, but they were serving you in the things that have now been announced to you through those who preach the good news to you by the

Holy Spirit sent from heaven, things into which even the angels long to look. So therefore, preparing your minds for action and being sober -minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

And this is an important aspect of being a Christian. We have one foot in this world, and we have to operate here as if we're gonna be here for a long time, but we also have one foot in the hope of the world to come when

Jesus returns, and we hope that Jesus will return any minute now.

But we are prepared to stay in exile as long as is necessary, right? So, as obedient children, then, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance.

But as he who called you is holy, and also you also be holy in all your conduct, since it is written, you shall be holy, for I am holy.

And if you call on him as father, who judges impartially according to each one's deeds, listen to, again, the words, conduct yourselves with fear throughout the time of your exile, knowing that you were ransomed from the feudal ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot.

He was foreknown before the foundation of the world, but was made manifest in the last times for the sake of you, who through him you are believers in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are now in God.

All right, good stuff. And here we, again, you'll note, in the opening chapter of 1 Peter, the concept of exile comes up twice, and we are instructed by God the

Holy Spirit, who is the common author of all of Scripture, that we are to conduct ourselves with fear, fear towards God, love towards others, throughout the time of our exile.

How long is our exile? As long as you're alive, you are in exile. Or, when Christ returns, the exile is over once and for all.

And so, we are to conduct ourselves with fear during the time of our exile. That being the case, when you look then at the

Old Testament text as it relates to the exile. So, Esther is going to be one of those books. You're going to get parts of Jeremiah.

The tale of Jeremiah is a great place also to see this theme. The book of Lamentations. Also, you need to take a look at Daniel and Ezekiel.

These are books as it relates to the exile. And Esther is a unique book. The reason why

Esther is so unique is because God's name in God himself is never mentioned directly in the text.

He is assumed. And so, if you were to kind of think about it, is that we as Christians, Christ has promised us in this lifetime suffering and persecution.

The one who believes in him is going to suffer, and Christ is our master. And if they crucified him, what kind of treatment do you think the world's going to give you as a

Christian? So, we should expect suffering and persecution. And so, if you would, Esther stands out as a kind of one story of the exile that gives us hope and also gives us some things that we can emulate and a mindset that we can, again, copy ourselves during the time of our exile.

Esther and Mordecai were in exile. So are you, and so am I. They were in dire danger.

So are you, and so am I. And so, we can see by the examples of the saints how we are to conduct ourselves then during the time of our exile.

And so, here we're not reading ourselves into this text. In fact, we're not even making ourselves heroes at all.

We are looking to people who bonafide through faith accomplished things that are amazing, but God is the one working behind the scenes.

And their example of their piety, of their fear of God, how they prayed to God and called out to him in the time of their dire circumstances stands as an example for us to follow as well.

And that's a lot different than narcissistically reading yourself into the text as if you're the hero.

You're not. I'm not. But you'll note that even if we perish as Christians, the day that we perish, our exile's over.

We finally get to go home. So it's important to keep that one foot in the hope that is in the future, that we will come into fullness when we die or when

Christ returns. Get the idea here. So all that being said, let's take a look at the story of Esther, and we're gonna be reading a large swath of this thing.

So, you know, just buckle up. It's a great story if you haven't read it, but read yourself into it.

Let the text stand as an example of what saintly, biblical, believing believers, believing believers, how they conducted themselves during the time of their exile.

And two of them are standing out here, Mordecai and Esther. So in the days of Ahasuerus, the

Ahasuerus who reigned from India to Ethiopia, over 127 provinces.

This guy has got a huge empire. In those days when King Ahasuerus sat on his royal throne in Susa, the citadel, in the third year of his reign, he gave a feast for all of his officials and servants.

The army of Persia and Media and the nobles and the governors of the provinces were before him.

And while he showed the riches of his royal glory and the splendor and the pomp of his greatness for many days, 180, and when these days were completed, the king gave for all the people present in Susa, the citadel, both great and small, a feast lasting for seven days in the court of the garden of the king's palace.

There were white cotton curtains and violet hangings fastened with cords of fine linen and purple to silver rods and marble pillars and also couches of gold and silver on a mosaic pavement of porphyry marble, mother of pearl and precious stones.

Drinks were served in golden vessels, vessels of different kinds, and the royal wine was lavished according to the bounty of the king.

And drinking was according to this edict. There is no compulsion for the king had given orders to all the staff of his palace to do as each man desired.

Queen Vashti also gave a feast for the women in the palace that belonged to King Ahasuerus.

On the seventh day, when the heart of the king was merry with wine, he commanded Mahuman, Biztha, Harbona, Bigtha, Ab -Gathha,

Gzathar, and Karkas. These Persian names are a little difficult. The seven eunuchs who served in the presence of King Ahasuerus to bring

Queen Vashti before the king with her royal crown in order to show the people and the princes her beauty, for she was lovely to look at.

Now, obviously, there's some underlying narcissistic, self -centered motivation for what he's doing here, but Queen Vashti refused to come at the king's command delivered by the eunuchs.

At this, the king became enraged and his anger burned within him. Then the king said to the wise men who knew the times, for this was the king's procedure toward all who were versed in law and judgment, the men next to him being

Karshena, Shethar, Admatha, Tarshish Merez, Marcena, and Memucan, the seven princes of Persia and Media, who saw the king's face and sat first in the kingdom.

According to the law, what is to be done to Queen Vashti because she has not performed the command of King Ahasuerus delivered by the eunuchs.

Then Memucan said in the presence of the king and the officials, not only against the king has

Queen Vashti done wrong, but also against all the officials and all the peoples who are in the provinces of King Ahasuerus, for the queen's behavior will be made known to all women, causing them to look at their husbands with contempt, since they will say

King Ahasuerus commanded Queen Vashti to be brought before him and she did not come.

This very day the noble women of Persia and Media who have heard of the queen's behavior will say the same to all the king's officials and there will be contempt and wrath in plenty.

And if it please the king, let a royal order go out from him and let it be written among the laws of the

Persians and the Medes so that it may not be repealed, that Vashti is never again to come before King Ahasuerus and let the king give her royal position to another who is better than she.

So when the decree made by the king is proclaimed throughout all of his kingdom, for it is a vast, it is vast, all women will give honor to their husbands high and low alike.

Now this advice pleased the king and the princes and the king did as Memucan proposed and he sent letters to all the royal princes, to every province in its own script and to every people in its own language, that every man be master in his own household and speak according to the language of his people.

Okay, yeah, so this is an interesting thing. Now one of the things you could do here, just kind of pointing this out exegetically, is you can make the comparison then between King Ahasuerus and Jesus.

And let me show you how you make that connection. In the book of Ephesians chapter 5,

Ephesians chapter 5, you have this text that everybody knows these three verses, but few have really pondered the next ones.

So listen to Ephesians chapter 5 starting at verse 22. This kind of lays out how a

Christian does good works, and watch how Christ gets pulled into this. Wives, submit to your own husbands as to the

Lord, for the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church, his body and is himself its

Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands.

And the wives sit there and go, what? Here's the next part though, and this is where Jesus comes in.

Husbands, love your wives as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, so that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish.

You're going to note that Jesus' bride, the church, doesn't have a very good history.

Let's just kind of put it that way. Morally sketchy beyond all reason, but what does Christ do with his rebellious, sinful wife?

He cleanses her of all of her unrighteousness, washes her with water and the word, and he presents her to himself in splendor, without wrinkle or spot.

He's the one who does all the cleaning and cleans up. So you're going to note, Jesus as a husband isn't anything like King Ahasuerus, and you're going to note, this is how

Christian husbands are supposed to be towards their wives. And you sit there and go, now let me ask you a question.

If Christian husbands loved their wives this way, would wives have a problem submitting to them?

Just saying, working that out. So everyone wants to put the emphasis here, but the emphasis needs to be here.

Haman had promised to pay into the king's treasury for the destruction of the Jews. Mordecai also gave him a copy of the written decree issued in Susa for their destruction, that he might show it to Esther and explain it to her, and commanded her to go to the king to beg his favor and plead with him on behalf of her people.
