Peace Through Blood
0 views
This sermon examines the final stages of the priestly ordination process from Exodus 29 and Leviticus 8, emphasizing the significance of the blood ritual applied to the ear, hand, and foot of Aaron and his sons. Each element symbolized their complete consecration—
ears to hear God's Word, hands to serve, and feet to walk in His ways. These rituals pointed forward to the perfect sacrifice of Christ, our Great High Priest, who alone grants true peace with God. Believers today are likewise called to be set apart, not conformed to the world, but wholly devoted to God in life and service.
- 00:00
- As we begin this morning,
- 00:17
- I actually want to recall for just a second your attention back to the psalm that we read a few moments ago and Specifically I want to point you to the last two verses
- 00:37
- We see in verse four and five this statement Do good
- 00:43
- Oh Yahweh To those who are good and to those who are upright in their hearts
- 00:54
- But as for those who turn aside to their crooked ways Yahweh will lead them away with the workers of iniquity
- 01:06
- Peace Be upon Israel this morning as we continue our work in The book of Exodus We actually come to the final
- 01:25
- Sacrifice and the final steps in the consecrating and ordaining of The priesthood and in the midst of this final work this final sacrifice this final command given by God One of the things that we see is
- 01:56
- Peace for the people of God And I want you to make no mistake that when we talk about the people of God we are talking about those who have placed their faith and their trust and their hope in Christ and Christ alone
- 02:32
- Those are the people who make up the true Israel so this morning as We have done over the last few weeks
- 02:49
- We will be looking at both the instructional command of God regarding this sacrifice and also the obedience text and so if you will
- 03:04
- Find your way to Leviticus chapter 8 put your finger there and Then turn back over to Exodus chapter 29 and In Exodus chapter 29, we will be reading from verses 19 through 28
- 03:23
- Then we will flip over to Leviticus and it read verses 22 through 35
- 03:32
- As soon as you have found your way to those two places. I Ask that you stand for the reading of God's holy inerrant infallible authoritative sufficient and complete
- 03:50
- Word in Exodus chapter 29 beginning in the 19th verse
- 04:00
- We read these words then you shall take the second ram and Aaron and his sons shall lay their hands on the head of the ram you shall slaughter the ram and Take some of its blood and put it on the lobe of Aaron's right ear and on the lobes of his sons right ears and on the thumbs of their right hands and on the big toes of their right feet and Splash the rest of the blood around on the altar then you shall take some of the blood that is on the altar and some of the anointing oil and Sprinkle it on Aaron and on his garments and on his sons and on his sons garments with him so he and his garments shall be set apart as holy as Well as his sons and his sons garments with him
- 04:57
- You shall also take the fat from the ram and the fat tail and the fat that covers the interals and The lobe of the liver and the two kidneys and the fat that is on them and the right thigh for it is a ram of ordination or consecration and one cake of bread and One cake of bread mixed with oil and one wafer from the basket of unleavened bread, which is set before Yahweh You shall put all these in the hands of Aaron and in the hands of his sons and you shall wave them as a wave
- 05:30
- Offering before Yahweh you shall take them from their hands and offer them up in smoke on the altar on the burnt offering for a soothing aroma before Yahweh It is an offering by fire to Yahweh You shall take the breast of Aaron's ram of ordination and wave it as a wave offering before Yahweh and it shall be your portion
- 05:58
- You shall set apart as holy the breast of the wave offering and the thigh of the contribution offering Which was waved and which was raised up as a contribution from the ram of ordination
- 06:09
- From the one which was for Aaron and from the one which was for his sons
- 06:16
- It shall be for Aaron and his sons a perpetual statute from the sons of Israel For it is a contribution offering and it shall be a contribution offering
- 06:25
- From the sons of Israel from the sacrifices of their peace offering even their contribution offering to Yahweh And then turn over to Leviticus chapter 8
- 06:38
- We will begin there in the 22nd verse reading down to the 36th Then he brought near the second ram the ram of ordination and Aaron and his sons laid their hands on the head of the ram and Moses slaughtered it and took some of its blood in place and put it on the robe of Aaron's right ear and On the thumb of his right hand and on the big toe of his right foot
- 07:05
- He also brought Aaron's sons near and Moses put some of the blood on their lobe of the right ear and the thumb of their
- 07:12
- Right hand and the big toe of their right foot Moses then splashed the rest of the blood around on the altar
- 07:20
- He took the fat in the fat tail and all the fat that was on the entrails and the lobe of the liver
- 07:27
- And the two kidneys and their fat in the right thigh From the basket of unleavened bread that was before Yahweh He took one unleavened cake and one cake of bread mixed with oil and one wafer
- 07:42
- And he placed them on the portions of fat on the right thigh Then he put all these on the hands of Aaron and on the hands of his sons and waved them as a wave offering before Yahweh Then Moses took from their hands and offered up them up in smoke on the altar with the burnt offering
- 08:00
- They were an ordination offering for a soothing aroma. It was a an offering by fire to Yahweh Moses also took the breast and waved it as a wave offering before Yahweh It was
- 08:13
- Moses's portion of the ram of ordination just as your Yahweh had commanded Moses so Moses took some of the anointing oil and some of the blood which was on the altar and sprinkled it on Aaron and on his garments and on his sons and on the garments of his sons with him and He set
- 08:30
- Aaron apart as holy His garments and his sons and the garments of his sons with him
- 08:36
- Then Moses said to Aaron and to his sons boil the flesh at the doorway of the tent of beating and Eat it there together with the bread which is in the basket of the ordination offering just as I commanded saying
- 08:47
- Aaron and his sons shall eat it and The remainder of the flesh and of the bread you shall burn it in the fire
- 08:55
- And you shall not go outside on the doorway of the tent of beating for seven days Until the day of that period of your ordination is fulfilled
- 09:02
- For he will ordain you through seven days Yahweh has commanded to do as has been done this day to make atonement on your behalf
- 09:14
- At the doorway of the tent of meeting moreover You shall remain day and night for seven days and keep the charge of Yahweh so that you will not die
- 09:22
- For so I have been commanded Thus Aaron and his sons did all the things which
- 09:29
- Yahweh had commanded through Moses Great and merciful
- 09:35
- Heavenly Father. We bow before your throne of grace and mercy this morning
- 09:44
- Lord even as we gather here together to praise and worship of your glorious heavenly name
- 09:51
- We are thankful for the truth of your word for its guiding precepts for its commands
- 09:58
- For the charge of Yahweh that is contained within or we look around At the distractions that are going on in the world around us the
- 10:11
- Clinging of the bells by the enemy to distract and alarm your people and we pray for spines of steel
- 10:19
- That would stand firm and be prepared to contend earnestly for the faith once given for all
- 10:29
- Father we give thanks That by the blood of Christ on Calvary's cross
- 10:36
- Our sins have been forgiven May we walk forward in obedience resting in the peace that passes all understanding
- 10:46
- Asking all of these things in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ Amen may be seated.
- 10:57
- Well as you will notice the beginning of this passage we now come to the third of The three animals that God commanded
- 11:07
- Moses to bring To the doorway of the tent of meeting for the purpose of ordaining and consecrating the priests
- 11:19
- Just as the animal we looked at from the burnt offering This animal is also a ram just as both the previous ram and the bull before it.
- 11:30
- It is an unblemished sacrifice and Again, just like the previous two animals
- 11:38
- Aaron and his sons are commanded to place their hands on the head of This animal before it is to be slaughtered
- 11:51
- Once again, this is not a magical thing that is occurring there is no real transference of sin or guilt from the people to the animal
- 12:06
- Rather it is a symbolic Movement now if you've been keeping up with what has been occurring here
- 12:20
- It should not take one long to notice that The priests and the people of Israel that stood before and Witnessed what was occurring
- 12:36
- That blood that plays a very central part and was very necessary For the atonement the bull if you'll recall died for the sins of these people
- 12:59
- The ram gave its life and was consumed as a
- 13:06
- Representation of them fully and wholly submitting themselves to God in service to him and This ram will now die for their final purification
- 13:20
- Consecration and the completion of their ordination
- 13:27
- In both of the previous previous two sacrifices the blood was applied only to the altar
- 13:35
- But you'll notice here that Moses is commanded to do something slightly different in this situation
- 13:44
- Moses is commanded To not only have blood applied to the the altar, but also to the priests themselves and in three very specific places the right earlobe the right thumb and their right big toe now interestingly
- 14:11
- There is only one other time in Scripture where we see this exact Description given
- 14:19
- Besides these two places in Exodus 29 and in Leviticus 8 and that is in Leviticus chapter 14
- 14:27
- When we are taken through the ritual that is required to purify those who were unclean
- 14:34
- Specifically in the case of someone with leprosy and so obviously just in application of that and the understanding of that the function here is to cleanse the priests of his uncleanness
- 14:52
- It is to represent full purification But in addition to this and applying the blood to these specific areas of the body
- 15:05
- It says something to us symbolically regarding preparation for service of God driver writes these words the organs of hearing
- 15:21
- Handling and walking are touched by the blood Implying that the priest is to have hallowed ears to listen to God's commands
- 15:34
- Hallowed hands to perform his sacred offices and hallowed feet to tread lightly the sacred places as also to walk generally in holy ways
- 15:50
- At the very beginning of this for for any of Aaron and his sons who would serve as priests of God it is absolutely imperative and Necessary that they not only hear the
- 16:05
- Word of God But they hear it Properly and that they understand it rightly
- 16:18
- You may have noticed Some of what we read in Leviticus Chapter 8 was not included in what we read in Exodus and we'll get back to some of that But I read those specifically because if you'll notice in verse 36 of Leviticus chapter 8
- 16:35
- We find that these words thus Aaron and his sons
- 16:41
- Did all the things which Yahweh had commanded through?
- 16:49
- Moses Now had they not rightly
- 16:56
- Understood and Properly heard the
- 17:01
- Word of the Living God They would not have been able to fully obey
- 17:10
- Brothers and sisters, this is a truth that did not end With the abolition of the priesthood
- 17:19
- But yet is a truth that carries forward Here to us today
- 17:28
- We can mark every problem within the church back to a misinterpretation and a lack of right hearing and a lack of right understanding of God's Holy Word When we see the things that are taking place
- 17:50
- We miss exactly what's happening The key here again
- 17:58
- That is in order for the word to be properly heard and rightly understood the blood had to be
- 18:10
- Applied Paul wrote writing to the church at Corinth records these words in 1st
- 18:18
- Corinthians chapter 1 verse 18 for the word of the cross
- 18:25
- By the way, if you need a translation that means the gospel For the word of the cross is foolishness to those who are
- 18:40
- Perishing the gospel message
- 18:49
- When it is delivered to people Whom have not been regenerated by the
- 18:56
- Holy Spirit Who have not placed their faith in The one true sacrifice
- 19:05
- Who have not by grace through faith in the
- 19:12
- Lord Jesus Christ been declared just Word of God is foolishness to those people
- 19:25
- But once that occurs once you have had faith
- 19:36
- Once you have been redeemed Then it becomes a matter of you
- 19:45
- Denying your self Those sinful desires of the flesh that cling to us
- 19:57
- It becomes a matter of putting to death That sin that remains within us submitting to the desires of the spirit
- 20:11
- Being obedient to the word Paul writing to Timothy in his final letter 2nd Timothy chapter 2 verse 15
- 20:18
- Says to him be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman
- 20:24
- Who does not need to be ashamed accurately handling the word of truth
- 20:32
- The only way to accurately handle the word of truth is submit to the word of truth To submit to what it says
- 20:40
- Not what we wish it would say along with the hearing
- 20:50
- The Word of God properly and understanding it rightly It is also necessary that Aaron's and his
- 20:59
- Aaron and his sons do the work of the ministry To which
- 21:04
- God has called them their hands.
- 21:10
- They would perform the sacrifices commanded by God on behalf of the people
- 21:17
- And with their feet They would lead the people to worship
- 21:24
- But just as with the ears that the purifying of the hands and the feet the the application of the blood was necessary and Enabled Moses to write that Aaron and his sons did all that God had commanded them that they were able to be obedient But only because the blood had been applied without clean hands to offer acceptable sacrifices and clean feet
- 21:57
- With which to lead they could not have fully obeyed Most of us sitting here this morning
- 22:06
- Have heard or said or been exposed to the saying That we have been commanded in Scripture to be the hands and feet of Jesus.
- 22:16
- Oh, this is not a direct command in That there is no verse that you can turn to That tells you to be the hands and feet of Jesus It is a principle that is taught in Scripture however, the problem comes in Where when we go and we do the work?
- 22:50
- That we get so busy doing the work and so proud of ourselves for doing the work
- 23:00
- That we never share the gospel We meet the needs
- 23:13
- We feed the people we clothe the people We find places for them to rest
- 23:20
- We give money to the poor We watch out for the widows for the orphans and we're very busy meeting the physical needs of all these people
- 23:32
- And we forget the one Absolute command given to us by Christ just before he ascended and that is to teach the word to share the gospel we complete these acts of kindness and mercy because they
- 24:00
- Make us feel good Imagine for a minute that you could solve
- 24:10
- World hunger that you could cure cancer that you could bring peace
- 24:21
- In the sense of removing conflict from the world so that everyone in the world experienced no hunger no sickness an
- 24:34
- Absolute peace one with another and yet we damned them to hell because we do not
- 24:42
- Give them the gospel the one thing The one thing that has eternal value
- 24:51
- We fail To give We never truly give them the living bread that truly cures hunger
- 25:07
- We never give them the eternal cure For all ailments and we never demonstrate to them
- 25:18
- What it means to have true peace Brothers and sisters be the hands and feet.
- 25:27
- Yes, and amen Be the hands and feet But do not do so to the neglect of the gospel.
- 25:36
- It is life -giving Truth it should be first and the other
- 25:44
- Second and so having applied this blood to the portions of the body
- 25:55
- Moses is then instructed to Splash the rest of the blood around the altar
- 26:02
- Again as he has in the other two sacrifices as a gesture a symbolic gesture of atonement in preparation for the use of the altar remember even the
- 26:13
- Holy things those things that have been set apart Bear the iniquity of the people that have created them and so in preparation for each one of these sacrifices
- 26:22
- This is necessary to atone for these things After the blood has been sprinkled on the altar
- 26:28
- Moses is commanded to take some of the blood To mix it with the anointing oil and to sprinkle it on Aaron His garments his sons and their garments
- 26:39
- The use of these two elements combined together the blood and the oil symbolized for us throughout
- 26:45
- Scripture that God is declaring them both forgiven and purified
- 26:53
- That's important First of all, it is a declaration of God. It is not a true state that they are in There is nothing that has occurred that has absolutely removed the sin from Aaron and his sons in the sense of That they still are sinners there's also nothing that has occurred other than the
- 27:13
- Work that has been done that has made them perfect in the sense of true perfectness like Christ but yet the work that was done is seen in the eyes of God as if they were now pure and Atone for notice in verse 21 of Exodus But this is done
- 27:40
- So that both Aaron and his garments and his sons and their garments can be declared holy or consecrated set apart
- 27:53
- To God for service. This is the whole purpose of this entire ceremony Is to prepare these men
- 28:01
- For service to God in the tabernacle Now at the conclusion of this we we see a very technical section regarding a wave offering
- 28:15
- The remainder of the sacrifice it includes not only the wave offering It includes the priest portion and then even a fellowship meal of sorts and some of that we will get to next week
- 28:27
- But we want to deal with a couple of these things Beforehand so we want to talk a little bit about the wave offering
- 28:39
- Each of these elements that remain in the passage that we have read this morning serve to symbolize or symbolically represent different things
- 28:50
- The best cuts from the animal along with the cake and the bread that is first placed in the hands of Aaron and His sons then becomes a wave offering so think about the the the picture of what's being given here
- 29:08
- Moses is commanded to take a Cake of bread a cake of bread mixed with oil and a wafer from the basket of bread that is presented before God to place that on the choice pieces of meat that have been prepared for Sacrifice and through to place all of this in the hands of Aaron and his sons
- 29:32
- Now there is is wide discrepancy over what it actually looked like to present a wave offering
- 29:39
- Whether it meant that they actually waved it around in the air or just presented it up to God there The points not the action that was taken physically
- 29:50
- But what it stood for symbolically It was acknowledgement of God's provision for them
- 30:00
- They acknowledge God as the provisioner. They acknowledge God as the sustainer as The one who not only created who not only provides who not only keeps but who does so forever
- 30:15
- Then this offering is taken from the hands of Aaron and his sons and placed on to the altar and Consumed along with the burnt offering it is given up as a
- 30:34
- Portion that is being returned To God Who has first given to them?
- 30:44
- And you'll notice that it generates a soothing aroma a sweet aroma in the eyes of God Denoting for us that the sacrifice is acceptable in the sight of God that these things have occurred in such a way that as to please him finally
- 31:11
- We see that the breast of the ram is given to Moses here And it's given to Moses here because in this situation
- 31:19
- Moses is acting as the priest later on as this is instituted in the priesthood and used
- 31:25
- Globally this offering this portion would be given to the Levitical priests and It would be their portion of the offering to consume
- 31:34
- If you remember the Levites were the only group that did not receive a portion of the land
- 31:40
- They didn't have anything to live off of so they sat say they lived off of what was brought in to the temple
- 31:47
- That's how they were supported as we move forward in redemptive history
- 31:55
- It becomes important to understand what this sacrifice is truly all about Although this is the first time that this sacrifice has been performed and although there are some minor differences ultimately this sacrifice
- 32:12
- Becomes what is known as a peace offering or fellowship offering or sacrifice the whole
- 32:22
- Ceremony I wish the people of God Come into fellowship with God and know what it is to be at peace
- 32:33
- With God. I want you to take a few moments here
- 32:40
- And I want you to imagine That you were an Israelite you are bearing witness to this very complicated and technical ritual that is being
- 32:53
- Performed in your service beginning with the calling of Aaron and his sons for the collection of the the items that are necessary for the for the ceremony to occur the washing of Aaron and his sons the repeated sacrifice the blood that is now covering the altar staining the garments of Aaron and his sons
- 33:18
- And the acknowledgement all of these things are necessary for the these men to be able to minister in the presence of God and to represent the people of Israel and the presence of God This should scream to us
- 33:44
- This should call out to us. This should remind us a lot about who
- 33:50
- God is The holiness of God and how
- 34:03
- Our sin how our sin stands in view of His holiness.
- 34:12
- And so as we think about those two things
- 34:20
- God's holiness and our sin Two questions should come
- 34:29
- To mind at least they do in mind. The first of those is how could I ever ever
- 34:35
- Be at peace with God With the sin that is in me and secondly
- 34:44
- What what does that truly even mean? To be at peace With God in order for us to begin to answer these questions
- 34:59
- The first thing that we have to do regardless of how many times we may have done it in the past Or how many times we may do it in the future?
- 35:08
- The first step in all of this is have a right understanding of the current status of the relationship between God and humanity
- 35:22
- Now to ensure we're on a level playing field because it's important to define term to make sure we're all thinking the same way
- 35:29
- We need to define exactly what we mean when we say Humanity So when we say the word humanity
- 35:37
- We are talking about the human nature of all
- 35:42
- Individuals of the homeo sapien category that exists from the moment of Conception or to put it short for you mankind in their natural state
- 36:00
- David writes in Psalm 51 5 Regarding this natural state behold
- 36:05
- I was brought forth in iniquity and in sin my mother conceived me
- 36:10
- David is not leveling a charge against his mother that she participated in some sin to bring him about The charge rather is one that he is leveling against himself
- 36:22
- Some of the context around Psalm 51 is it occurs just after Nathan David writes it just after Nathan confronts him about the sin that he is committed with Bathsheba The adultery that he has had with her the murder of Uriah It is a psalm written where David Acknowledges his sin before God He demonstrates for us what it means to be contrite of spirit to repent before God verse 5 is
- 37:00
- His acknowledgement of the very sinful nature of humanity song one song 14 verses 1 through 3
- 37:16
- Add to this a little bit Because it says in Psalms 14 1 through 3 it tells us that the wicked fool said is in his heart.
- 37:25
- There is no God They act Corruptly they commit abominable
- 37:31
- Deeds there is no one who does good Yahweh looks down from heaven upon the sons of men to see if there's anyone who has insight or understanding
- 37:41
- Anyone who seeks after God they have all turned aside all together They have become worthless. There is no one who does good not even one
- 37:53
- Paul didn't make it up. This is the reality of who we are and so the present
- 38:05
- Relationship therefore between God and humanity is one in which we are by nature sinful creatures
- 38:16
- And God Who is by nature? Holy who is by nature just who is by nature righteous?
- 38:27
- This puts us at direct odds with God Consider for a moment the words of Genesis chapter 6
- 38:40
- Genesis chapter 6 Beginning in the 11th verse we read now the earth was corrupt
- 38:47
- Before God and the earth was filled with violence and let's be clear here. We're not talking about the physical ground
- 38:55
- We're not talking about the dirt. We're not talking about the soil We're not talking about the mountains or the sea or the clouds
- 39:01
- We are talking about the people that inhabit the earth now The earth was corrupt before God and the earth was filled with violence and God saw the earth and behold it was corrupt for all flesh
- 39:13
- All flesh had corrupted their way upon the earth Then God said to Noah The end of all flesh has come before me for the earth is filled with violence
- 39:26
- Because of them and behold I am about to destroy them with the earth and yet There are those
- 39:41
- Who would claim? peace Where no peace?
- 39:48
- Exists look at the world around us. They cry out peace
- 39:56
- Yet peace does not exist Jeremiah writing in verse in chapter 6 verses 13 through 15
- 40:02
- He'll repeat it later Ezekiel writes it in two different places from the least of them even to the greatest of them
- 40:10
- Everyone is greedy for gain and from the Prophet even to the priest everyone practices lying
- 40:16
- They have healed the brokenness of my people Superficially saying peace peace, but there is no peace
- 40:26
- Brothers and sisters the charge that I would lay at the feet of the church Today is that there are many who are living exactly what
- 40:35
- Jeremiah is describing within the confines of what they would deem the church They are crying out peace peace
- 40:43
- And we see these pieces in so many different ways and so many different cries But at the end of the day there is no peace
- 40:52
- Jeremiah continues Were they ashamed because of the abomination they have done? This is the question of God When he sees the people were they even ashamed of of this abomination that they have done
- 41:05
- Are they even ashamed of the way that they have perverted my word? Are they even ashamed at the preaching that they do from their purpose that that directly contradicts what my word says?
- 41:16
- And listen to the answer They were not even ashamed at all
- 41:27
- They did not even know how to feel dishonor
- 41:33
- Therefore They shall fall among those who fall at the time that I punished them
- 41:42
- They shall be cast down says Yahweh so the position
- 41:55
- The humanity finds itself in is it enmity with God with no desire to serve no desire to follow no desire
- 42:09
- To be obedient even within the church today If you speak the words obedience you're talking about legalism
- 42:18
- Jesus himself said if you love me you will keep my commands They say yeah, but only Jesus only gave us one command that was the love one another that's not the only command
- 42:27
- He gave you if you study what Jesus really said
- 42:32
- He says the first command is to love the Lord by God with all your heart all your soul all your strength
- 42:38
- The second is the love thy neighbor as yourself Well, if you go back and you study the two tables of the ten commandments the moral law of God written on the hearts of men
- 42:45
- At the creation of the world you will find that that is the moral law That in no way did
- 42:54
- Christ ever do away with the commands that we are given in the moral law of God And he calls us to obedience of those things
- 43:10
- So if we get back to the question of what it really means to be at peace with God and how any of us could ever
- 43:18
- Knowing this about ourselves. How could we ever expect to be at peace with God? The next thing we need to do in this process now now that we've seen that we are an
- 43:33
- Humanity is an entity that we understand the situation between God and and man is to find the word peace
