02:14: So how many of you guys like to talk about money? everybody well God does so God has over 2 ,000 verses about money in the
02:22: Bible and About a year ago. I started you know, I'm a financial planner by trade
02:27: I started taking a year -long study To become what was called a certified kingdom advisor
02:32: So it's really finding out more about what God wants you to do with your resources And I know just two days ago.
02:38: I go home and I'm asking my wife like hey I got something I want to talk about because we just moved into a new house and she's like, oh what
02:44: I'm like the budget And she immediately shuts down. She's like, oh, yeah, there's other things to do.
02:50: Let's go do something else So we're gonna use Ramsey's Financial Peace University course as a basis but we're gonna bring all the scriptures to life to to have those conversations of The argument the world views the differences the cultural world views of what the world wants you to do with your money
03:09: What does God want you to do with your money? So it's a it's a nine week long study. It's gonna start mid -september
03:15: We're gonna have a signup sheet in the back starting next week. I'll have an email sent out Hopefully this week with more detail.
03:21: So if you have any questions come to me We're trying to gauge how many people want to participate so we can kind of coordinate where it'll be

03:47: Thanks. Good morning, everyone So a couple years ago my lovely wife Carrie started working for Saints prison ministry
03:54: Which is actually just down the road their headquarters in our office and so the
04:00: Saints prison ministry they Get groups of guys and actually there are girls I know we tried to get a volleyball team going here a couple years ago didn't work out
04:07: But basically we go into the prisons and we share the gospel With the prisoners through the through playing sports, so I'll be going to play softball heading out to Colorado a week from this upcoming
04:20: Wednesday So be traveling there with a group of guys. We have guys from New Jersey, Pennsylvania some from Georgia and one guy from Illinois, so it's a mixture of guys that are going to be going out and So the main gist of our trip is to go into these prisons.
04:36: We'll play softball You're usually between one of the games or at halftime we'll share the gospel with them and So I appreciate your prayers
04:46: I know many of you have reached out and supported me through your prayers and many of you have also supported me financially
04:52: So thank you for that. I'm fully funded and ready to go. So I'm looking forward to God using me.
04:58: I'm a rookie at this. This is my first time playing with the Saints. So I'm just Going with my eyes wide open and then just wanting to let the

05:26: Let's pray So father God we thank you for Eric and that you have sent him into this mission field We pray that you would go before him be his rear guard and keep your hand upon him
05:36: Lord protect him Even from injuries and all the strain give him the endurance to play the sports
05:42: Well, but Lord most importantly put the gospel on his lips give him opportunities to share
05:47: Christ And we pray that many of these men in the prisons will come to saving faith in the Lord Jesus Christ We pray for Ron and Hamilton this week that you would bless them in the ministry that they're doing that many of those children in Malawi would come to saving faith as well

22:03: Thee Rejoice and be glad Gathering as Christians and breaking bread together
22:53: Ever since, for 2 ,000 years since Jesus instituted So it's very special Some of you may not really know what to do during communion
23:02: And I want to invite you guys to take some looks with me Hi Grady I want you to look at three things, three looks
23:12: The first look is looking back at the cross We look at the cross because we want to proclaim the death of Jesus Jesus really died on a cross and He rose from the dead
23:24: But His body was broken and His precious blood was spilled for us And it was the most special and precious blood ever shed
23:32: The second look, we want to look within We want to examine ourselves of any sin
23:37: And examine ourselves to make sure that we're remembering Jesus' body that was broken
23:42: And remembering the blood that was spilled for us So we don't want to take communion in an unworthy manner
23:48: We want to remember what Jesus wants us to remember And we want to be able to be real with ourselves
23:53: And confess our sins to Jesus Knowing that Jesus is faithful and just to forgive us our sins when we confess them
23:59: And then the third look is very important, we often forget When we proclaim the Lord's death, we do it until when?
24:07: Until He comes back So the third look is looking forward to Jesus coming back
24:13: So here's the three looks The first look, the cross Look back at the cross The second look, examine yourself
24:19: The third look, look forward to Jesus coming back Now if you don't believe any of these looks
24:25: Then you probably shouldn't take communion But if you believe that Jesus died on the cross and rose from the dead
24:30: And you believe that you're a sinner but have been shown grace And you believe that Jesus will return again one day
24:37: I do, and a lot of us do believe this Then please, take communion with us today as a believer
24:44: And ushers, would you come forward so that we can do that When I examine myself and even when
27:59: I look out at some of you guys I might think, like, maybe it's possible that some of you guys aren't saved
28:04: But when I look at Jesus and I think, wow Those of you that believe in Him, it's impossible for you guys not to be saved
28:11: When we think of the death and the burial and the resurrection of Jesus Christ What a great hope we have
28:16: So I'm going to read from Luke chapter 22, verse 19
28:21: And he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them
28:27: Saying, this is my body, which is given for you Do this in remembrance of me
31:46: And likewise, the cup after they had eaten Saying, this cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood
32:29: Alright, let's go to the Lord in prayer Father, thank you so much for the indescribable gift
32:39: The body and blood of your only Son, your dear Son That was given for our salvation
32:47: We pray, Lord, that any that hear this sermon that have not yet believed in the Son Would place their faith in Jesus Christ And for us who have believed,
32:56: Lord, deepen our faith Teach us by your word Strengthen our devotion to you
33:04: Nourish us with the pure milk of your word With the solid food of your word
33:10: We pray this in Jesus' name, amen Richard Dawkins is perhaps the most famous atheist
33:19: And he has spent a career attacking the foundations of Christianity Only now he claims he's a cultural
33:26: Christian He sees how miserable things turn out when a culture leaves
33:32: Christianity Things fall apart, and he wants to bring back Christmas carols
33:37: And church choirs, and cathedrals, and all of the traditions of Christianity He wants to be a cultural
33:46: Christian If you spend your life chopping down a tree Chopping at the root of a tree
33:53: You shouldn't be surprised when that tree is not bearing fruit
33:59: It's one thing to miss the orange that comes from the orange tree But if you've spent your whole life attacking that tree
34:06: You have only yourself to blame So there is some inconsistency there
34:11: But what Richard Dawkins has noticed is something That many people across the world are recognizing
34:17: It's happening right now in Ireland There are giant protest movements Because as Christianity has receded
34:24: Islam has come in and taken over In Spain, they're chanting, Spain is
34:30: Christian, not Muslim And in the streets of London The same kinds of events are taking place
34:37: There is a major cultural moment here Where the West has been departing from Christianity Did you know that even
34:44: Elon Musk Recently proclaimed that he's a cultural Christian? He said that he thinks that Christianity is the best thing for society
34:55: And if you have eye for an eye All you're going to end up with is a bunch of blind people
35:01: So you need Jesus' teachings on these things And the importance of loving one another
35:07: So he calls himself a cultural Christian But not long ago, he sat down for an interview
35:14: With the Babylon Bee Do you guys know what the Babylon Bee is? It's like the onion, it's a satire site
35:20: But it's produced by Christians And these three guys had Elon Musk sitting at the table
35:26: And their last question was Hey Elon, could you do us a solid? Could you accept Jesus as your savior?
35:33: It was pretty flippant in how they asked the question He said, well, my
35:38: God is the God of Spinoza Spinoza believed that God was more of a force that's in everything
35:45: It's kind of pantheistic And his idea of God is that God basically set the world in motion
35:52: And gave the world its order But he's not personal And he doesn't have wrath against sin
35:59: But Elon Musk said, hey If Jesus is saving people I'm not going to get in his way Sure, I'll be saved
36:04: And then they celebrated And said, okay, Elon Musk got saved But then he went on to continue
36:10: To say irreverent things about the Lord's Supper Demonstrating that he didn't truly get saved
36:16: He became a cultural Christian Or acknowledged it more than he had in the past To every person listening to this sermon
36:26: Whether here or online It is not enough to be a cultural Christian Even if all of Christianity Dominated the world
36:36: And made our traditions and our culture More pleasant and better to live in Which certainly a
36:42: Christian society Is far superior than any other society It's obvious You can just look at the world and determine that But if even the whole world was
36:51: Quote unquote Christian And you yourself have not repented of sin Felt the weight of your own sin
36:59: And known that the wrath of God Hangs over your head To where you turn from sin
37:05: And embrace Jesus Christ The one who was crucified And who rose from the dead
37:11: Then you go to an eternal hell Eternal suffering and fire
37:17: Under the wrath of God What would it profit you If you gained the whole world
37:23: But lost your soul I wish that the guys from the
37:29: Babylon Bee Instead of asking a flippant question Had said, turn with me,
37:35: Elon Listener To Romans 3, 21 to 31
37:40: Turn with me now I believe that this passage of Scripture Is the most direct, poignant
37:51: Theologically rich Statement of the Gospel we have in the Bible These verses
38:00: Carry so much weight And they're so profound And so brilliant and radiant Because of what just went before Which sets us up to understand
38:09: That there is none righteous, no not one Together we have become worthless
38:15: The poison of asps is under our lips Cursing and bitterness come from our mouths
38:24: Our throats are like an open tomb Our feet are quick to shed blood
38:30: There is no fear of God before our eyes That all people together
38:35: Have become unrighteous And by the law, by obedience to the law
38:41: No one will be justified Rather, the law only brings us the knowledge of sin
38:49: And so the wrath of God Is over the sinners of this world And that includes everyone
38:56: And so when we open up into Romans 3, 21 Through 31 The first thing that should hit you is
39:02: But now The word now, nouni in the Greek It's a very strong, emphatic term
39:11: That changes everything It's a complete 180 We were going this way about the sinfulness of man
39:17: But now, a complete turn Everything changes Light bursts into the room
39:22: You were buried alive You could not get out
39:30: You were in a coffin, six feet under Running out of oxygen About to enter a
39:37: Christless eternity When all of a sudden, light breaks into the coffin And someone has rescued you
39:43: And opened this way of life for you This is the kind of change That we're experiencing right now
39:50: But now, let's read it But now The righteousness of God Has been manifested
39:59: Apart from the law Although the law and the prophets bear witness to it The righteousness of God Through faith
40:09: In Jesus Christ For all who believe For there is no distinction
40:15: For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God And are justified
40:21: By His grace as a gift Through the redemption
40:26: That is in Christ Jesus Whom God put forward as a propitiation
40:32: By His blood To be received by faith
40:38: This was to show God's righteousness Because in His divine forbearance He had passed over former sins
40:46: It was to show His righteousness at the present time So that He might be just And the justifier of the one who has faith
40:55: In Jesus Then what becomes of our boasting? It is excluded
41:01: By what kind of law? By a law of works? No, but by the law of faith
41:09: For we hold that one is justified By faith apart from works of the law
41:16: Or is God the God of Jews only? Is He not the God of Gentiles also? Yes, of Gentiles also
41:23: Since God is one Who will justify the circumcised by faith And the uncircumcised through faith
41:31: Do we then overthrow the law by this faith? By no means, on the contrary
41:36: We uphold the law That was a mouthful, wasn't it?
41:43: So we can just close the Bible and go home now You guys all got it? Did we figure that out? Each verb, each noun
41:51: Every little word in this passage Is packed with rich meaning
41:56: Let's begin at but now Again, that's now A complete change of pace
42:03: From the deathly dark sin And the wrath of God that is revealed from heaven
42:12: To suddenly these bright rays of hope Even the righteousness of God Is manifested, it's made known
42:21: Apart from the law Although the law and the prophets bear witness to it
42:27: Recall that our sin Was damnable We had no righteousness of our own
42:37: No, not one of us But here is presented the righteousness of God That's very important because It's not our righteousness
42:47: It's not by doing good And being acceptable to God Rather, it is God's own righteousness
42:53: His perfection His holiness Not ours, it's foreign to us
42:59: It's an alien righteousness That is now credited to us
43:05: The righteousness of God has been manifested Apart from the law Why does it say That the law and the prophets bear witness to it?
43:15: Because the law Exposed our sin It also gave a promise
43:20: Of the coming righteous one Zechariah 9, 9 The righteous king
43:26: Having salvation, gentle and lowly And riding on a donkey He was promised before he came
43:33: The law also shows the righteousness of God Israel kept on sinning
43:39: And dying in the desert God remained truthful
43:44: And perfect in all his ways So law and prophets refers The law to the books of Moses Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy The prophets then refers to the other writers
43:56: And the whole Old Testament Tells us of a righteousness That was coming
44:03: They didn't understand it fully But there were glimpses In the Old Testament Verse 22 now reveals
44:11: Something that the world never knew The greatest news The righteousness of God Through faith
44:21: In Jesus Christ For all who believe For there is no distinction
44:28: No distinction between The richest man in the world Who can go anywhere
44:33: And do anything he wants And the poorest orphan Living on the streets
44:40: Of the long way Malawi No distinction Between the smartest man
44:47: And someone born without mental faculties No distinction between Jew and Gentile No distinction among men
44:56: Because all of us are guilty And yet here Those who have faith in Jesus Are given the righteousness of God To their account
45:07: Isn't that amazing? If you felt the weight of Romans 1 .18 to 3 .20 The sinfulness of man
45:15: Then the glory of this statement Should knock you right out of your chair The righteousness of God Comes by faith in Jesus Christ For all who believe
45:28: Anyone here who believes in Jesus The Son of God Who died and rose
45:33: Is given the righteousness of God Amazing statement
45:39: Paul goes on To give justification for this Because if God simply
45:46: Gave you righteousness Willy nilly Like it's no big deal And took your sin and just ignored it
45:53: Like it never happened He would not be a just God How is it that God can give the righteousness of one
45:59: To another What's the ground for this? I would say that verses 24 and 25
46:05: In Romans chapter 3 Are the most theologically rich statement
46:11: Ever written Perfect I describe it as being like a diamond
46:16: We just said justification Is through faith That's earth shattering
46:23: God declares righteousness And credits righteousness To the one who has faith
46:29: But in verses 24 and 25 There are seven Prepositional phrases
46:36: Between justified And through faith And I say it's like a diamond
46:42: Because I don't know if anybody here Has ever held a diamond I held one when I bought a diamond
46:47: For my wife for an engagement ring But it was nothing Compared to what a rich man
46:53: Could buy Imagine a diamond that had weight to it And you could turn it around From each angle that you look at it
47:00: The light comes in and gives you a different Beautiful radiance It's brilliant and you have to look at it
47:07: In different ways to really appreciate The diamond That's what these verses are like The diamond is justification by faith
47:15: But each of the phrases In between adds Depth and meaning And all of it is essential
47:22: It's all intrinsic to the value Of what we're saying here Because some people hear the gospel preached
47:28: And they yawn And they laugh
47:34: And yuck it up And go about their business To an eternal hell But other people
47:41: Are struck by glory The weight of glory And they see in these words
47:47: Life itself The glory of God The hope, the living hope
47:53: And so let's look at these phrases One by one Verse 23 simply
47:59: Summarizes The big idea That we've been saying
48:04: The last few weeks, Romans 1 18 to 3 20 Can be summarized this way For all have sinned
48:11: And fall short of the glory of God It's the first verse my mom taught me
48:18: In the A to Z Bible verses A. All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God B.
48:23: Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ And you will be saved Acts 16 31 Here verses 24 and 25 are saying that Believe in Jesus And you are saved
48:34: But let's look at it part by part First part of it is
48:40: Are justified Now let your eyes run all the way ahead To the end of that sentence
48:45: Ignoring the seven prepositional phrases And you see the big idea Justification through Faith The ESV says to be received
48:56: By faith But in the Greek it's just dia through And pisteos which means faith
49:02: It's through faith And the ESV is adding some Words to help you grasp what's being
49:08: Said here to be received by faith But the big idea is justification through faith That's the main point
49:16: Now in between justified And faith You have these prepositional
49:22: Phrases The first is by His grace By His grace
49:32: Not by your merit Not by My goodness By nothing inside of me
49:38: In fact I'm the worm I'm the wicked one Who deserves to be trampled underfoot
49:45: But God Has a Gracious heart The word grace
49:52: The etymology of the word really refers to Leaning in toward one Whom is loved
49:58: The showing of favor Kindness Toward an undeserving person
50:04: So grace is Unmerited favor It's God who has grace
50:10: Toward a sinner So the first phrase by grace That word summarizes the gospel
50:15: It's all of God's goodness Toward us Nothing good in us
50:22: The second phrase is As A Gift Do you see it in verse 24?
50:31: As a gift You can't Understand the gospel Unless you realize that what you've been
50:38: Given is completely free You Paid nothing You never went and worked in the field
50:46: To earn a salary You never did Something good that God noticed
50:53: And then Rewarded you Rather it is purely a free
50:58: Gift It came from His gracious heart And without merit It was given to you
51:06: The righteousness of God Being declared righteous Is entirely
51:11: His Gracious gift to you The third of seven phrases
51:16: Here in verse 24 Through the redemption Redemption Don't gloss over that phrase
51:24: Because redemption Is the buying back Out of slavery The purchasing
51:32: You were made in the image of God But having fallen into sin
51:37: You didn't know it but you became a slave You had to obey sin
51:43: As your master You could not overcome sin And free yourself You were held captive By your sin
51:51: You were a slave to sin Anyone who sins is a slave To sin But Jesus came and redeemed you
51:59: He bought you He purchased you and made you Belong to Him He's the rightful owner
52:06: The creator God and you were made by Him Notice Paul when he identifies himself In Romans 1 5
52:13: He says a slave Of Jesus Christ I'm sorry it's actually 1 1
52:26: The first thing he says Paul the word servant In the Greek is slave
52:31: A servant of Christ Jesus You were purchased From slavery to sin
52:37: And made to belong to Christ To serve Him Redemption is being bought But with what were you purchased
52:46: It wasn't Silver and gold It was something
52:52: Far more valuable It was the very blood Of Jesus Christ The redemption is
52:59: In Christ Jesus And that's our next phrase You haven't seen
53:06: The glory and the splendor Of the gospel until you've seen The person Jesus Christ There's never been anyone like Him There are many things
53:15: In this world that capture our attention Shiny things that Are exciting to watch
53:22: People that you Admire and look up to But you've never seen anyone like Jesus You've never seen
53:29: A sinless one who walks On water and opens blind eyes And teaches the world
53:35: The way of righteousness Things that no one else had ever said Having lived a perfect life
53:43: Who gives His own life Laying His life down for His friends And conquers death
53:50: Ascending to the right Hand of the Father The gospel is all about Jesus Christ It says
53:58: In Christ Jesus It then Goes on to say Whom God put forward
54:06: We tend to Skip that prepositional phrase Because it leads into the Propitiation that causes us
54:13: To think theologically But don't move too quickly over being put Forward. What does it mean to be

55:03: Suppressing truth they exchanged The glory of God for a lie and worshipped And served the created thing

55:15: Depraved mind to do what ought not be Done and they became slaves Of all kinds of impurity they were given over To the lusts of the flesh
55:23: And because still they did not retain the Knowledge of God they were given over To unnatural passions

55:36: Manner of unrighteousness and a list of 21 horrible things Murder and slander
55:42: And gossip and all this Evil The point is listen When God gave
55:49: Over the people of this world to Their sin to do what ought not be done That Was the revelation of His wrath

56:18: God He would judge all this Wickedness in the earth there must be no God and so they

56:30: The truth of God but listen God's wrath is Seen in The very wickedness of man
56:40: It proves that we're given over The very Fact that he's not quickly judging
56:48: Shows The world the wrath Of God this is what Romans 1 18 Means when it says the wrath of God is revealed
56:55: From heaven It's in the wicked deeds Of this world so picture this
57:02: Everybody Sins and they go about their own way And it's as if God isn't even There And this goes on for year after year

58:17: Jews We often think of The cross of Jesus Christ As a picture of God's love
58:26: The sacrifice of the son but we Have to understand the other side of that too He's a public spectacle
58:33: Displaying God's wrath Against sin You see the gospel is about God the just Not just us
58:43: The ones justified By his death The public spectacle displayed
58:49: The holiness of God Before our eyes He had passed over these sins
58:56: And people Question whether he's even good And righteous But in the cross
59:03: There is a public spectacle Now this word I don't know if many of you know it But it's one of the most important words in the bible
59:09: It is propitiation Have you heard it? It says here
59:14: In verse 25 God put him forward this public spectacle As a
59:20: Propitiation The word Propitiation means to turn
59:26: Away wrath To appease wrath God has
59:32: Wrath against sin And in seeing this public spectacle That God himself offers
59:38: His wrath Is completely satisfied It's turned away
59:44: It's propitiated It's finished And so Jesus speaks from the cross
59:51: It is finished The wrath of God Is exhausted Into the body of Jesus As he hangs on the tree
01:00:01: That's propitiation Propitiation is so important And the last phrase there is
01:00:07: By His blood The blood Life is in the blood
01:00:14: Leviticus 17 11 So God requires the blood on the altar For the making of atonement
01:00:19: When the blood is put on the door post The angel of death passes over The blood of the lamb

01:01:42: A day Of eternal fire Next This passage is about God the just Verse 25
01:01:56: Halfway through says This was to show God's righteousness To show that God is just He's righteous
01:02:03: He is holy and pure Because in his divine forbearance
01:02:08: He had passed over former sins When David slept with Bathsheba And had
01:02:15: Bathsheba's husband Killed Uriah the Hittite How did he not just fall Into a pit of hell
01:02:21: If God is righteous How was Abraham credited with righteousness
01:02:27: Because he believed the word of God The answer is right here That divine forbearance
01:02:34: Means tolerant patience God was patient Tolerating sin
01:02:39: In those who would believe in him Why It was to show his righteousness
01:02:45: At the present time It all depended
01:02:51: On what would happen on that day When Jesus himself Died for their sin
01:02:59: So that he might be just And the justifier Of the one who has faith in Jesus This is very important God the just Is shown to be righteous

01:03:49: And the big idea here is Because God did it this way Justification by faith He gets all the glory

01:04:03: By saving in this way Then what becomes of our Boasting If I contributed something
01:04:13: To my salvation, I would have something To boast about, wouldn't I? If God judged people based on Being good enough and doing good things
01:04:21: Then the sinner could boast In the presence of God But here it is excluded By what kind of law?
01:04:27: By law of works? No But by the law of faith God ordered the world this way
01:04:35: That those who put their faith in Jesus Would be received
01:04:41: As righteous Because that glorifies him And his salvation Think of the opposite of that To get a clearer picture
01:04:49: Of why this matters so much to God Do you remember Nebuchadnezzar? He paraded around And he looked at Babylon From his high tower and he said
01:05:00: Is not this Babylon That I have built? And immediately
01:05:06: God struck him In his mind And he was reduced to the status
01:05:11: Of an animal And as a beast he went out in the field And began to graze on the grass
01:05:16: For seven years And then coming out of that God restored his mind
01:05:23: Read Daniel 4 for a beautiful statement Of the glory of God My glory
01:05:30: I will not give to another Isaiah 42 God is concerned
01:05:36: For his own glory The very purpose of being A man or a woman
01:05:41: Made in the image of God The reason you were created Is to glorify
01:05:46: God The chief end of man Is to glorify God And enjoy him forever
01:05:52: The Westminster Confession got that right The chief end of man Is to glorify
01:05:57: God Herod Antipas Wore a shiny suit
01:06:03: Standing as the king over Israel But he was really an Edomite and a pretender to the throne
01:06:12: And when he boasted And the people said This is the voice of a God not a man He received that praise
01:06:18: And the Bible says he was Eaten by worms and died It doesn't say he died
01:06:24: And was eaten by worms It says he was eaten by worms and died He was consumed by These intestinal worms
01:06:33: That he dealt with And historians talk about Disgusting thought But the judgment of God Because he boasted and took the glory
01:06:40: That only belonged to God The whole point here is that The gospel is as it is
01:06:45: For God's sake not ours In verse 27 We benefit from it
01:06:52: But it's about him In verse 27 our boasting is excluded Verses 28 to 31
01:06:59: We hold that one is justified by faith Apart from works of the law God's not the
01:07:07: God of Jews only He'll go on to say but of Gentiles too And in verse 31
01:07:13: Do we then overthrow the law by this faith By no means we uphold the law God is shown to be
01:07:20: A righteous law keeper Punishing sin in the son Without violating his own
01:07:27: Righteous standard of justice So the point of the gospel
01:07:33: And it's beautiful And it's deep We could spend many sermons On each of these ideas
01:07:41: But there's one more Before we close That I want us to dive a little more deeply into My daughter showed me a meme

01:08:03: And then I have so much more to say But picture it like this We're at the beach right now
01:08:09: And we've been wading into some deeper waters But your feet can still touch the ground Your head is just above You've been at the shore and done this
01:08:17: It's possible though to swim a little deeper Where you can't touch the ground It's difficult to do that And you might get swamped
01:08:27: And I'll understand if you want to stay a little closer You can tune me out for the next five minutes But I want to give you some
01:08:33: Deep theology Some deep waters For those who are willing to swim
01:08:39: Who want to swim Who want something more That you don't know And that is this word propitiation
01:08:48: It's used four times in the New Testament We just read one of them Romans 3 .25
01:08:53: Turn with me to Hebrews 2 .17 The word propitiation is also used here
01:09:08: Where it says Therefore he had to be made like his brothers In every way Who is he made like?
01:09:16: His brothers The context in 2 .11 The brothers 2 .12
01:09:23: I tell your name To my brothers And again the children God has given me in verse 12
01:09:29: It's referring to believers right? His brothers specifically And then in verse 17
01:09:35: It says he became a merciful And faithful high priest In the service of God To make
01:09:42: Here's our word Propitiation for whom? For The sins of The people
01:09:54: The context here The people with that definite article Refers to the people of Israel As the high priest would make offering
01:10:02: For the Israelites who believed in Yahweh They would bring their sin offering And the priest would make the offering
01:10:08: For the people It does not refer to Every person in the world head for head
01:10:15: This doctrine That Christ died For the elect
01:10:21: For His sheep Is called definite atonement Particular redemption
01:10:28: He died specifically For the sheep and I say the sheep because In John 10 verse 11
01:10:34: The good shepherd Lays down his life for the Sheep That's who it's for The sacrifice is for the sheep
01:10:46: And there are some who do not believe In John 10 26 it says
01:10:51: They do not believe Because they are not among The sheep
01:10:58: In some people's theology People are not
01:11:03: Sheep because they don't believe But in biblical understanding
01:11:09: And there is room for difference Over this point because again we're swimming In deep waters we don't have our feet
01:11:15: So firmly fixed We're trying to keep our head above water We're doing our best to understand the deep things
01:11:21: Of God 1st Corinthians 2 But this Is I think what the bible teaches
01:11:29: The people here refers To believers Jesus died for the sheep
01:11:36: Ephesians 5 25 to 27 The groom lays down His life for The bride
01:11:45: There is a general love for all People but the groom has a special Love In the laying down of his life
01:11:53: For the bride This is an important idea
01:11:59: Ephesians 1 Teaches the trinitarian Salvation Father, Son, Holy Spirit We are blessed by The father who chose us
01:12:13: Before the foundation of the world Did you hear that? Ephesians 1 5 The son
01:12:22: Accomplishes that Redemption on the tree Ephesians 1 7
01:12:27: The spirit Applies that same redemption In time
01:12:35: Having Believed you're marked in him With the seal, the promised Holy Spirit So did you see that? The father, the son
01:12:41: And the Holy Spirit do the saving The father elects the people The son pays for their sin
01:12:48: And the spirit Applies that saving work In our lives as we come to believe
01:12:53: There's no disunity In that the father, son and the Holy Spirit Are in perfect harmony
01:12:59: The father elects, the son Atones and accomplishes redemption The spirit applies it in time This doctrine
01:13:08: Called particular redemption Helps us understand what Propitiation really is
01:13:16: There is union with Christ Before you were born
01:13:23: In fact, before time The lamb was slain before the Creation of the world God knew you by name as his sheep
01:13:32: When Jesus went to that cross He propitiated Your sin
01:13:37: He really paid for it Once and for all Securing eternal redemption
01:13:44: Hebrews 9 The death of Jesus Actually atoned for your sin
01:13:49: It was paid for Before you were born He knew you As he hung on that cross
01:13:56: And his blood spilled He was intending that blood for you Now I want to ask you this question
01:14:02: How valuable was his blood? Priceless Infinite 1
01:14:09: Peter talks about the precious blood of the lamb We're not atoned for With silver and gold but with the precious blood of the lamb
01:14:16: Now listen His blood is valuable enough To cover every sin that every person
01:14:21: Has ever committed But the idea of intent is in view here He knew you
01:14:28: By name as his sheep As he bled and he died On the cross And he actually
01:14:34: Satisfied God's wrath If propitiation means turning away wrath
01:14:41: Satisfying God's wrath Those for whom Christ died
01:14:47: The wrath is Fully satisfied already There can be no more wrath
01:14:54: The very idea that there is a place called hell And in Revelation 6 17
01:15:01: The wrath of the lamb Is still against the people of the earth How could that be? I thought wrath was satisfied
01:15:07: It was satisfied for the believers But there are those, the goats Who are not the sheep
01:15:15: Who will still experience God's wrath Hell is a real doctrine And it's not only for unbelief
01:15:25: Wrath, according to Romans 1 18, is against all ungodliness All unrighteousness
01:15:30: And those who suppress the truth Unbelief Hell is the wrath of God For all eternity
01:15:40: People in hell Are still sinning for all eternity They hate
01:15:46: God for his punishment They don't believe it's just And they continue to curse God For all eternity
01:15:51: And so this goes on and on and on The wrath of God But I share all of this
01:15:59: And there are other passages about propitiation Just mention them briefly Hebrews 2 17, 1
01:16:06: John 4 10, not that we love God But that he loved us and gave his son to be propitiation
01:16:11: For our sins There is one that makes it look like Propitiation was offered
01:16:17: For the goats If we read it I think wrongly And that is 1
01:16:22: John 2 2, that he is the propitiation Not only for our sins but also for the sins of the whole world
01:16:31: And some people take that To mean that John is saying He died for every person
01:16:36: Individually, head for head But listen
01:16:42: The context that that was written in And the understanding The language of that first century
01:16:49: Did not mean Every person head for head In Mark 1, 5 it says
01:16:54: All the land went out to him John the Baptist All the country went out to him The whole country went to him
01:17:01: But not every person in Israel Went to John the Baptist And got baptized
01:17:08: That phrase Not only for our sins But also for the sins of the whole world Means John is saying
01:17:14: It's not exclusively for you who are receiving this letter But for people from all of the world
01:17:20: From among The Gentiles too Not just the Jew The Gentile and people in the farthest reaches of the world
01:17:27: It doesn't negate The other passages That talk about the blood of Jesus Atoning Particularly For the sins of believers
01:17:40: So Those are some deep waters, amen And we've been swimming around But let's get back now to put our feet
01:17:47: Back where we can feel the ground And we can spend more time Swimming in deep waters
01:17:53: At other times in Bible studies And if you have questions we can sit and talk I love when somebody will come
01:17:58: And talk about these things And try to flesh it out And it's okay not to agree on everything
01:18:06: Because again We're only human We're doing the best we can But we do have the revelation of God And we're trying to submit ourselves
01:18:12: To every word that he has spoken So in closing For real
01:18:20: When we're taught that God justifies Through faith Do not approach this doctrine
01:18:25: Flippantly To make a mockery of it or to laugh But realize the depth
01:18:32: Of this Doctrine The manifold beauty
01:18:37: Of this diamond Here is a gift For which we pay nothing
01:18:42: Here is grace When we earned wrath Here is redemption
01:18:48: When our cruel taskmaster Was inescapable Here is the
01:18:54: Christ When the hope of Israel had waned Here is a
01:18:59: Public display That the world must never
01:19:04: Forget having seen Here is propitiation When wrath was accrued
01:19:10: And was overwhelming Here is the blood of an innocent lamb Hanging on a tree
01:19:17: Here is our righteousness Here is our salvation Here is our only hope Here is life
01:19:23: It is here in the gospel for all Who believe Let's pray Gracious heavenly father we thank you so much
01:19:31: For justification by faith And lord we will say
01:19:38: These doctrines These teachings Are above our heads Unless you keep us afloat we drown
01:19:46: Under these waters But lord we are swimming In an ocean of your grace
01:19:52: And we pray that you would help us Father To understand the deep
01:20:00: Things of God Let us not be content with the things that we have
01:20:05: Learned so far But let us press in to a deeper knowledge
01:20:11: Lord I pray for each person in this room To grasp
01:20:19: The height and the depth and the width Of Romans 3 21 to 31
01:20:28: That these words Would not just be dry Old doctrine
01:20:33: But would be Our very life Because lord we want to say above all
01:20:41: Thank you For propitiating wrath Against our sin
01:20:47: We deserved your wrath And we did nothing To earn this salvation
01:20:53: There was nothing better about us And yet you gave us this incredible Indescribable gift
01:21:03: You paid for our sin In Christ's body on the tree Father thank you for this love
01:21:10: Thank you for turning away Your wrath And saving us We give you all the glory
01:21:18: For you deserve All the glory and all the praise And all the honor In Jesus name amen
