Dead Men Walking Podcast: David done messed up! An in depth study of Psalm 51 with notes & comments

Oh there. It is the different intro. Yeah man I would say new intro but we used.

That before we have that's been a year that one's like going into battle baby.

We are going into battle tonight. I know exactly. We're gonna get into some Psalm.

51 tonight. That's all man that is that's a pretty serious one man. Yeah it is. When I was looking at a little bit earlier I was just like oh my goodness wonder if.

We're gonna be okay through this thing. Oh I know it'll definitely cut. Cut your flesh. For sure. That's for sure. Oh man. But. Hey guys welcome back to another episode of dead men walking. Yeah yes. We appreciate you always listening telling a friend and sharing it with a friend.

That's how we bring glory to God how we grow the show. And Jason how are you doing tonight. Brother. Doing great man. I just had dinner with a friend and his family. That's a coincidence. That's some pretty good ribs and yeah the kids played.

And yeah good time. Oh man. Your little one's so cute. I know you're so funny. I whenever she's singing twinkle.

Twinkle little star just walking around the house it's like how do you know.

Those lyrics already. You're only 20 months. Exactly. Pick it up quick man. I know. Right you know the exact pronunciation wasn't there. But we got the. Yeah yeah. She was like bo bo bo bo. She was really close though for 20 months.

I was like wow. Yeah yeah. But we had dinner is yeah spoiler alert to everyone. We did. That's what he was alluding to. We had a little family dinner. Our families got to hang out. I'm not with your lovely bro.

Some bread. I broke some bread. As brothers and the Lord should do from time to time with their families. Definitely. But it was cool. So now we got full bellies. Yep. And now. Now we're gonna dig into.

It's so great. It was so cool that you and I kind of are always on the same page. When I text you earlier this week and said hey should we do. Yeah just dig into some scripture this week. And I was like maybe a psalm or a chapter like Psalm 51.

Great. All. Right we're good. That's exactly what I was thinking. I know a song would be good. And 51 is a heavy song. Yeah it is. It's a heavy lift. So we're gonna you know go through. Probably read all 19 verses to you.

Then maybe talk about a little bit. Maybe get a little particular. Yeah. About some of the verses. I know I read it a few years back and and I had to bust out one of my older Bibles with the notes in it.

I've been through. I don't know since I was 24. This is my fourth Bible. Okay. And it's always just a little rough. Because you save that Bible. Because I got all kinds.

Of notes and in the linear you know. So do you tie light and you dude I write.

Ever yeah yeah. Highlight and arrows back and remember this. And God did that for me. And so each one is kind of like a chapter and phase in my life. But it's kind of hard giving up that Bible because you man there's so many good notes in there right.

The very first time I did that I tried to copy I got I got to like halfway through Genesis. This is too much. I just usually keep notes in my diary. I don't know where it's at in the thing we got to get you on this you have.

So many drops on that thing though I don't even know where to start but anyway.

No price. Price is right. Oh wait. Is it. Where is it at. Did you see that. No I didn't. It might be because that horn is the. You do not have a diary sir you're a.

Man's man right. Oh man I see Joel Olsteen. There did you hear about that.

This week uh-huh you didn't hear. What all the cash all over he got questioned.

For that yeah yeah I know man they brought him in and they're like are you.

Missing 600 grand and then we find 400 of it in the wall. Yeah right. What do you think. Okay can I tell you what. The first thing. Yeah totally yeah. I thought inside job. Someone who worked there knew they weren't gonna be able to walk out of the church with it and they stashed it and they said we'll come back later for it.

Yeah yeah. I mean let's see that I don't know if it was Joel himself do you think.

He's the one I don't I wouldn't think so. I mean you know I I don't I mean dude I know that we like obviously have differences with mr. Olsteen. Oh.

Olsteen or Osteen. I just. I'm very careful about saying wouldn't wouldn't.

Go to heaven. I just think that only God can judge a person. That's right. So very.

Some very obvious differences but when it comes down to something like that I'm not sure that I could paint him as a. As a what is it called. I don't know. Not a thief. There we go. A thief. No no he's those.

But he's a I don't think that he's.

A thief. Well my second thought was well that's maybe him or someone that he's really close with. They were like look at here's a good way to have almost half a million dollars. Yeah. Liquid cash. Yeah.

No liquid. Which is a great idea in case something goes down sideways. Who knows. Yeah. And it's just it's in the wall. I know where it's at. And if I need to tap it. Yeah. I don't think it's like he would hide it just then.

Oh I got to go get 40 grand out to go get some new suits. It's like no that's all he the church up. I'll pay us for that right horrible stuff that he spends all his money on. But my point is is like I wouldn't put it past him or someone he knows like now.

So Joel's pretty smart in the fact that he probably has plausible deniability so he could have had a conversation very vague his number one or a friend or whatever goes. Okay I pick up what you're laying down and then throws it in a wall and then just goes.

You know when stuff goes sideways in their belly up and yeah they've been raided or I don't know for whatever reason he goes. Oh here's. Yeah I got 500 by the way we need to do. Yeah. Yeah. You know. So it could be that too but the whole thing is very weird it is.

It's a really weird and and also the plumber that that found it. I mean he thought did they peg him on that did they say that he was a part somehow. No.

That is that all that he immediately called a supervisor because it was a contract union job brought him in and then they reported it to police.

Immediately gotcha okay cuz I thought I saw something on Good Morning America on the bottom ticker. I wasn't really paying attention. He worked for the church. It was a big inside job. No it was something like he had put it in there and like yeah and then he found it.

Quotation marks right. Anyway yeah that was a wild.

Story that came out this week. Oh yeah we'll watch that one. Yeah man. Develop.

Right yeah I'm sure it'll wait. Mary just like the what's her name. Jillian Maxwell just Galene Galene Maxwell. Yeah. Not even allowed to hear testimony you.

Just yeah you know Kyle Rittenhouse we saw every single testimony and video and right here but with everything international pedophile ring yeah no no no the judge actually said it would be too. What was the word it.

They said it would be too appalling to guys details that come out publicly and we're like excuse us but right right first of all we're the judge of that is the public. Second of all this person it was part of something did some seriously some serious crimes against children.

Yeah we need to know about it but it's just crazy that it's being protected and we're getting what we get. Artists.

Lot of this is right now dude. Yeah exactly. They're shaking in their boots.

It's like be sure your sin will find you out. I mean like and I think and you know what. I'm gonna throw something out there. Get ready. All right. Conspiracy theory. Throw it out. I'm gonna throw this out.

Plot twist. Okay Epstein's alive.

Whoo. Plot twist. Wait a minute. Say that again. Plot twist. Epstein's alive now. Wait. Why do you think that or why do you. Why would you. This is. It could be possible. This is my discernment prophecy side of no I really I'm.

Wondering I mean they can't find the video of when he quotations hung himself. They can't produce that the the people that were a part of it are they. Are they even being convicted for like nothing happened.

Yeah yeah I mean there's there's nothing that's that's tied to that whatsoever just saying that he did it but yeah there's where's his body where where's where's everything. I don't.

Know was he cremated. Yeah. Yeah. For any of you guys listening we don't know what the heck we're talking about. Not at all. This is conspiracy. Yeah. I'll go with it. Sure. Yeah. He's alive stranger.

Things have happened right. Exactly what if he.

Showed up on the witness stand. They're like and next you know because he's.

Supposed to be dead. Right. Everybody said it online. Yeah. No there's I mean some stuff's gonna come out. Look at men's men and women's heart. They're evil. Yeah. Lived in a depraved world. They do evil things.

Rightfully we can have some modicum of justice exactly with this trial. But I honestly I'm not really hoping for too much. Because yeah. Just see how the justice system is right now. Even the justice system is getting very politicized.

Mm-hmm. Which is unfortunate very unfortunate. Because it's supposed to be a model of biblical justice. That's how the Constitution and the founding father set the country up modeling it off of Christian Judeo principles and godly justice.

Yep. And now this is where we're at exactly all. Right. Well that kind of takes the hidden sin and fight your sin being found out. That kind of takes. That's right. You. What we're gonna talk about tonight.

Yep. I'll tell you what. Jay. Could you read through all 19 verses. Absolutely on 51. And maybe we'll just pick it apart a little bit. Yep. Here we go reading from what. The ESP. This is ESP. Okay.

Yep and the title of this section is create in me a clean heart. Oh God. Psalm 51 verse 1. Have mercy on me. O God according to your steadfast love according to your abundant mercy. Blot out my transgressions.

Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. For I know my transgressions and my sin is ever before me against you. You alone have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight so that you may be justified in your words and blameless in your judgment.

Behold I was brought forth in iniquity and in sin. Did my mother conceive me. Behold you delight in truth in the inward being and you teach me wisdom in the secret heart. Purge me with hyssop and I shall be clean.

Wash me and I shall be whiter than snow. Let me hear joy and gladness. Let the bones that you have broken rejoice. Hide your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquities. Create in me a clean heart O God.

And renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from your presence and take not your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation and uphold me with a willing spirit. Then I will teach transgressors your ways and sinners will return to you.

Deliver me from blood guiltness. Oh God. Oh God of my salvation. And my tongue will sing aloud of your righteousness. Oh Lord. Open my lips and my mouth will declare your praise. For you will not delight in sacrifice or I would give it.

You will not be pleased with a burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit a broken and contrite heart. Oh God you will not despise. Do good to Zion in your good pleasure. Build up the walls of Jerusalem.

Then will you delight in right sacrifices in burnt offerings and whole burnt offerings. Then bulls will be offered on your altar. Wow. There's a lot there. There's a whole lot.

There that is man that's a heavy psalm. Yeah it's. I mean what a great psalm is an example for a repentant sinner. Exactly to. You know a lot of believers are obviously familiar with the story of David and this really was kind of a.

Blemish on his character right. I mean what happened with Bathsheba is what it was what the psalm is about. Absolutely yeah. And so just as he's walking through that repentance just like you just said yeah it's it's just incredible because all of us go through this you know maybe not adultery but no some type of sin.

Which we're going to get into. Right. Right. You know I know when I was looking through my notes I kind of had it broken down like this. Part one is he confesses his sin that's verse three through six.

Part two he prays earnestly for the pardon of his sin that's verses 1 2 7 and 9. Part 3 he prays for peace of conscience which is verses 8 and 12. Part 4 for grace to go and sin no more which is verses 10 11 and 14.

Part 5 for liberty of access to God in verse 15. Part 6 he promises to do what he could for the good of the souls of others which is verse 13. And for the fear and for the glory of God which is verses 16 and 19.

And then lastly concludes with a prayer for Zion and Jerusalem which is verse 18 and 19. Yeah and I mean this was well this is one of the like I said one of the greatest blemishes on David's character.

In fact in first Kings 15 5 the verse says that. And talking about David he turned not aside from the commandment of the Lord all the days of his life save only in the matter of Uriah the Hittite which is what this is talking about.

So literally in first Kings they make a point of saying David did not turn from the laws and precepts of God except for that issue yeah where he publicly sinned and it will get we're gonna get into it in a little bit here but also didn't have remorse for a.

Pretty long time right. Yeah and I mean you know in the in the story in 2nd Samuel 11. You know 2nd Samuel 11 and 12 is where the story comes out of. I mean right here you have abuse of power in the name of lust.

You know at the beginning I mean look at look at what David did to you know to his his family. And you know even even a friend a a close friend he you know sends into battle to be killed you know so that he can have his wife.

Yeah and I mean this is this this story is just I mean it's about brokenness and a lot of us have been broken by sin you know. And something like this. I mean you know where where do you even start. I mean lives are just torn apart within this.

But by the end of this Psalm there is redemption. And I just feel like you know if there is someone out there just really hear us as we're talking about this just know that there is redemption in Christ.

Redemption through repentance. Yeah. Redemption through repentance. Absolutely. Yep. Totally agree.

Yeah repentance is number one. Yeah. One of the things that I noticed too is you know David had a son at this time so he had been unrepentant for at least nine months at least. Okay depending on how long this took place before his son with Bathsheba was even conceived.

And it's just crazy to think that you know although God will allow us to you know in the I say us I'm talking about those that are saved that are regenerate. Yeah. To suffer in their sins. He's always going to recover us through repentance.

Yeah. He will allow us to suffer in our sins and the choices we make. But he will give us the opportunity to recover through repentance. And that's what happened here with David. And in here's another thing that blows my mind.

This was a public psalm. This was a public song. He is he's talking publicly about his hidden sin. Yeah. And for me it's it's just so crazy that there is once you you come to a place of repentance there really is no shame.

There's shame in the fact that you sinned against God. But there is no shame in what you've done because you have been forgiven and you've repented of it. He was able to talk about because he's more concerned about other people learning from this in seeking repentance as well as we get down into the later verses.

Yeah. Which I find I mean just amazing. Yeah. It's almost like the you know the believer covets the place of repentance more than they should. They should worry about being ashamed of the actual sin. Right.

You you want to get to that place of repentance. But I don't know. Maybe you.

Want to go verse for verse. Yeah maybe we. Just. How do you want to do this. Let's go.

Verse by verse. Okay and take a look at it. See what it stirs up in us. So starting verse 1. Yeah we're back on verse 1. Have mercy on me. O God according to your steadfast love according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions.

I'll go through to wash me thoroughly from my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. So first of all we got David coming from an absolute place of humbleness. Mm-hmm. Have mercy on me. Right. He didn't say have mercy on me because I'm your man and you're my.

You know I'm I'm anointed and I'm the king. And I've done all this good for you and I've carried out what I've done. Look I've done unlike what Samuel did. Or so. I mean sorry Saul did. 1st Samuel 15 30 Saul says Lord preserve me and my reputation for I've sinned yet honor me.

Before the these people. Saul was concerned about his reputation when he repented. Yeah. In in this Psalm we see David coming very humbly and saying have mercy on me. And we'll see more of that in like verse 10 and 11 where he comes humbly.

But what do you get out of those first. Yeah. I mean well you know I mean I.

Am seeing just the the drama you know the the brokenness in him. I mean in how he knows who to run to. You know what I'm saying like they like. Think about your daughters and your son. I mean what do you want from them.

You want them to know that they can come to dad. You know like you. You want them to know hey if you mess up if you have something go on in your life like don't don't run you know. And hide. Like just just come to me.

Let's talk about it let's let's figure it out. You know. No how big or how small. Let's just work through it. And this is something that is huge. You know you know adultery. I mean murder. But murder.

Exactly I mean why. This entire story. But think about the redemption that you're getting from this and and not not saying that there weren't consequences in the story. But you know there are. The first thing that David wants to do is run to his father his heavenly father.

And that's that's something that I that I.

See in those first couple verses that's good. Yeah it's good stuff. So there's something in verse 3 here that really stuck out to me. For I know my transgressions and my sin is ever before me. Meaning I mean he had deep grief.

This wasn't just a moment of passion. It was 9 10 11 12 months of secret sin of condemnation of being ashamed of rolling it around in his head going. You know there was no public repentance. By no means.

Not until we get to this. You know like you said in the story until he publicly repents with Nathan. But that line my sins are ever before me. Lets us know that David wrestled with this. Yeah. This caused him deep grief.

Yeah this wasn't like I had a flare-up of guiltiness and then Oh Lord please forgive me. Right. It was he was wrestling with this. This was grief and being ashamed and condemned and all those other things.

Verse 4 says against you you only have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight so that you may be justified in your words and blameless in your judgment. This one too shows me the sovereignty of God.

That the view of the sovereignty of God that David had because I don't think he's minimalizing the fact that someone had been killed. Right. And that a woman had been violated and that he had to lie. But he's saying ultimately I have I've only sinned against you.

Yeah. Because that's all that matters in this life. Yes I've harmed other people. I need to ask their forgiveness and there's consequences. But ultimately I've sinned against you and you alone. And that's why I'm coming to you to ask for mercy.

Right. I thought that's pretty good too. Yeah. That's so.

Good yeah. I mean there's there's no other way to cut those those two verses.

Right there for sure. Yeah. Go on. Go on to five. So this is where this is a key verse to where like Aquinas and a couple others argued and Augustine argued for original sin. Where says behold I was brought forth in iniquity and in sin.

Did my mother conceive me. Original sin. Yeah. The fall of Adam. Once again he's setting that table in this psalm in worship to God of knowing who he is compared to God. Right. Look at you. I was brought forth.

First of all I was created. Yeah. I might be king and I might be the man in Israel right now and have all these men under my command and all these you know fruits of my labor. But ultimately I was brought forth by you created in iniquity and in my sin.

Did my mother conceive me. Yeah. But behold you delight in truth in the inward being and you teach me wisdom in the secret heart. That's so good. Isn't that good. I mean. I mean it's poetic too.

But it's so true. But yeah and I mean I you know whenever we talk about the sovereignty of God and what God was doing in this situation you know I mean just the things that he was learning. Probably as he was writing this you know yeah I mean like I I really I start to wonder like what the Holy Spirit was you know speaking you know it's like what what was he learning from the Father at that point in his life as he's going through this situation.

Yeah. But yeah.

This one here verse 7 is one of my favorite 7 and 8 because it says purge me with his top and I shall be clean wash me and I shall be whiter than snow. Now his hop was a leaf that during Passover they would dip into the lamb's blood and they would sprinkle it.

And that's during Passover that's what would wash away the sin is the sprinkling of the lamb's blood. Right. At Passover we we know now that Christ is our Passover lamb. Yeah. I'm in his blood washes away our sin.

So David is even using a very messianic and prophetic words in these two verses because he's saying purge me with the hisop. He's essentially saying remove my sin only as Christ can. Right. And I shall be clean wash me and I shall be whiter than snow.

Verse 8 let me hear joy and gladness. Now listen to this another messianic prophecy. Let the bones that you have broken rejoice. Right. Right. Right. Isaiah 53. Yeah. Bones you broke. Yeah. Absolutely.

So those two verses there I love how he's intertwining. So he's coming because we're gonna talk about salvation in a little bit here too. Because he even brings that up but he's coming from a place of humbleness.

He's understanding who he is. And then he's also. And then now in verse 7 saying hey just like at Passover when we sprinkle blood on that mercy seat during the yearly sacrifices or during the yearly tradition of Passover where we sprinkle it that the blood of the Passover lamb may cleanse us.

I need you to do that. Right for me. Now to me this I would think this is a pretty new concept here. Mm-hmm. God said no you have to do that in the in the priestly Levite line lineage would do that. Here we have David directly appealing to God to do that.

And how does God do that. Through Christ. Yeah. Through the plan of redemption. Yeah. Right. Yep. I don't know. You got anything for seven and eight there. What do you think. Yeah. I mean you know with well.

With eight I mean especially let me hear joy and gladness. I mean he was he was crying out saying look like I'm not doing so good yeah let me remember joy and gladness. You know like I mean it's yeah I mean you could.

You can see from verse 1 to 8 how his emotions are just running through this I mean and as it goes even you know through 19 but but yeah it's like he's he's in a dark place. But yeah you know I mean that's what happens to us when we are in sin.

You.

Know. Yeah. So verse 9 hide your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquities. Essentially you could read that that hide your face is basically like don't deal me don't deal with me in the manner that I deserve.

I mean that's what he's asking there. Yeah. Hide your face from my sins. I deserve. Yeah to be the consequences and disciplined. And I deserve death for my sins. But hide your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquities.

Verse 10 created me a clean heart Oh God and renew a right spirit within me. So I love that verse because that goes back to when I was saying you know he's approaching God. Yeah. As a sinner. Yeah. Not as king not as ruler not as the king that carried out God's will through many battles and in the establishment of the throne in in Israel.

Right. Unlike like I said Saul in 1st Samuel 1530 where he says you know please honor me before these people. Yeah. You know. No he was concerned David was concerned about his nature being changed. Created me a clean heart Oh God and renew a right spirit within me.

He's basically going look at I did this horrible thing. Something has to change here. Right. I mean that's repentance at its core. Right. Repentance isn't asking forgiveness. It's understanding that something wrong was done and then do it and then from there doing the exact.

Opposite going the opposite direction yeah turning around his yeah I mean his desires and thoughts could only come through the intervention of God you know. Yeah like I mean those the redirection I guess of it you know of those desires and thoughts only come through you know God helping absolutely that verse 11.

Always gets me too because it's very personal for me because I felt this way before in prayer and worship where it says cast me not away from your presence and take not your Holy Spirit from me. Hmm. Have you ever been in like deep prayer or deep worship where you feel like Lord.

Just don't. Don't leave me. I know I've messed up or I know you know I haven't. I haven't felt that same type of I don't hate to hate the word use the word felt. But I know I don't measure up. I know I'm not good enough and I understand redemption and I get all that.

But don't take your comforter from me. Yeah. Don't. Take your Holy Spirit from me. At least I have you. If all else fails in this world at least I have you. And that's what David's doing here. I mean he's crying out and saying take not your Holy Spirit from me.

Yeah. It's just such a personal. Once again I can't believe that this is a public. This would have been issued in the King's Court. Yeah. This was a song he was. This was open for all all people to hear and sing.

Right.

Did you just say something earlier just about you know him fearing that the Spirit was gonna be taken from him just like just like Saul. Just is that what.

You just said yeah I mean like I guess I wait. Did I say like Saul. Yeah just like I was saying like Saul. How Saul was worried about his reputation it was.

Worried about through it but but I mean in that verse David was was worried about the Spirit being taken from him just like Saul. It happened to Saul. Oh right. Oh yeah. Is that is it. Yeah. Maybe you said that I don't know my.

Yeah I.

Think I repeated myself about the Saul thing cuz it's just it just stuck out to me because I had a note in my Bible that said Saul wanted his reputation healed when he repented. David could care less about his reputation.

He just didn't want the Spirit taken from him. Yeah. Yeah. He was like God please just don't look at my sin. Right. And I think that's the difference in in in someone who the Lord has given wisdom and in knowledge and discernment and has a maturity and sanctification.

That says yeah I don't really care about my reputation. I want my rep with men. Yeah. Yeah. I want my reputation with you God to be right. And the only way to do that is please don't treat me how I should be treated for my sin.

Look look the other way on my sin. Please. I know what I've done. You know what I mean. It's such a contrite and humble. Yeah. So hard that he's coming to him. Right. Right. And then we see in verse 12 he says restore to me the joy of your salvation and uphold me with a willing spirit.

So the way my brain works is I read that and I go. Okay. Well there's two things that happened to to David from this sin he had. He's full of grief and sadness. Restore me to me the joy and then uphold me with a willing spirit.

He's weak. Yeah. He's weak and overwhelmed and just I can't do this anymore. Yeah. I mean this is a broken man that's writing this psalm that this worship song to God. He's saying I'm grief-stricken and I'm weak.

Restore to me the joy of your salvation and uphold me with a willing.

Spirit yeah that's so good so good I love it.

Verse 13 so I like this one because it's kind of like David doing a little. He's doing a little like negotiating with God right he says. Then I will teach the transgressors your ways and sinners will return to you.

Isn't that something that.

We do in our humanness though we're just like if you it. Sometimes it's like if you can do this for me I'll do this. Yeah you know. And it almost it almost sounds not very good like I mean in my brain it to some point I understand what it's.

Saying are you trying to wheel. And. Right. Right. But I understand. But I think this was a place to where he's basically. Look at I'll make you two promises. I will teach sinners your law. Yeah. And I'll help and I'll lead them to salvation in any way that I can if you allow it.

Yeah. So now he's getting into look at restore the joy. I mean look how salvific this whole thing is to restore to me. Right. Exactly then. He's like a I've learned from this. Mm-hmm. I've learned from my transgression from breaking your law.

Yeah. Help remove this from me and that will allow me to then teach others about this transgression and how not to transgress your ways. And then sinners will return to you. They'll come on to salvation because of the witness.

I love. So I think David's even looking into understanding how God can use something like this even for his glory. Right. You know. But I'm totally on board with you two to where anytime I see someone wheeling and dealing with God I get a little nervous.

Right. Right. But I've done it. I know I know I it's like human nature isn't it. Yeah. I mean do you ever feel like you're making deals with God. It's like what am I doing. But but in.

This he's talking about more of like salvation you know. And it's like it's like him coming back to relationship with Christ you know. And it's it's like oh man you know that's that's exactly what you want to do.
