Jesus Turned Water Into Wine?

In John 2, Jesus and his disciples, along with his mother Mary, attended a wedding feast at Cana in Galilee. When the wine ran out, Mary said to him, They have no wine. And Jesus replied, Woman, what does that have to do with me?

My hour has not yet come. His mother said to the servants, Do whatever he tells you. So Jesus had the servants fill six huge jars with water and said, Now draw some out and take it to the master of the feast.

When the master tasted the water, which had become wine, He said, Everyone serves the good wine first, and when people have drunk freely, then the poor wine. But you have kept the good wine until now.

Wine, Not Grape Juice

It has been argued that Jesus turned the water into grape juice. No, he turned water into actual fermented wine. That doesn't encourage drunkenness, just as feeding 5 ,000 people with 12 baskets of food left over doesn't promote gluttony.

The Bible sometimes uses wine to show God's abundant provision. In Psalm 104 .15, God provides wine to gladden the heart. In Zechariah 9 .17, it is a gift of God's goodness. In Proverbs 3 .10, a person who honors the Lord with their wealth will have vats overflowing with new wine.

The Significance of John’s First Miracle

John mentions only seven of Jesus' miracles, but each one is chosen for its significance. In his first miracle, the wine ran out, just as the people were dead in their faith. But Jesus gave water turned into wine because he came to give life and give it more abundantly.

Water Into Blood and Water Into Wine

When God called his people out of slavery, Moses turned water into blood, representing death to all who do not follow God. As Christ is calling us out of slavery to sin, he turned water into wine, representing abundant life to all who follow him.
