We're going to be in Luke chapter 24 verse 30 today Luke 24 30
00:25
This is the story that the two men along the way that Didn't recognize
00:34
Jesus for a little while We get to read the part here where they did
00:43
Luke 24 30 we're a little early this afternoon. So Okay, here we go
00:53
And it came to pass as he sat at meat with them he took bread and blessed it and break it and gave it to them and Their eyes were opened and they knew him and he vanished out of their sight
01:09
This is interesting to look at the words in verse 31 because the word opened in the
01:16
Greek is two little Greek words and And Dia is how it starts
01:24
Means thoroughly that's one of the things it means and when you add that to the front of the word It means whatever that word is, but thoroughly so what it means is open thoroughly
01:35
So their eyes were open thoroughly not just open, but they were just boom
01:41
You know, they were they were in blindness. They couldn't understand it. They didn't see it and all of a sudden
01:46
Open thoroughly completely open very strong word in The Greek now the word knew where it says and they knew him.
01:57
This is an interesting word because It means to know upon Some mark now think about what that means a minute to know upon some mark
02:12
It's almost like a landmark if you know when you're driving, you know where you are by the buildings you're around That's how
02:19
I drive. I never know the street names. I just go by how it looks It means to recognize but the reason it means to recognize because it means that there was something a mark that they saw that made them recognize and So when he opened their eyes thoroughly they knew him
02:39
By something about him that was a mark that they recognized that they had seen before That's the connotation of the word and as soon as their eyes were open and they knew him it says he vanished
02:53
Now in the Greek, it doesn't read quite the same way in the English where it says and he vanished out of their sight
03:02
It literally reads this way and And he caused himself to be out of their sight
03:11
Isn't that interesting? It's a little different and Their eyes were open and they knew him and he caused himself to be out of their sight
03:22
So was he still there? perhaps Doesn't mean he left it just means he caused himself to be where they could not visibly see him
03:35
And verse 32 and they said one to another did not our heart burn within us
03:42
While he talked with us by the way and while he opened to us the scriptures
03:48
This word opened is very interesting It means to open thoroughly the same exact word.
03:56
We saw a while ago when it said he opened their eyes So now it says he opened the scriptures thoroughly
04:05
Unto them because their eyes were open Their heart burned.
04:11
What kind of heartburn was this? This was interesting Because when you read it in the
04:17
English, it says their hearts burned when you read it in the Greek It says Jesus set their hearts on fire
04:24
See the difference it is active from the point of view of Jesus doing the work
04:32
Passive from the point of view of the the people But it's not like their heart just burned in and of itself
04:39
It literally reads to be set on fire to be kindled or to be consumed with fire.
04:45
And so it is that Jesus caused their hearts to burn and They rose up the same hour and returned to Jerusalem and found the eleven gathered together and them that were with them now
05:01
They're ready to be good witnesses, aren't they because their hearts are burning. That's what makes a good witness for the
05:06
Lord Saying the Lord is risen indeed and has appeared to Simon Simon one lion this time.
05:13
He wasn't bragging He was telling the truth It really happened that way because we saw him and they told what things were done in the way and how he was known of them in breaking of bread and As they thus spoke
05:30
Jesus himself Stood in the midst of them and said unto them peace be unto you
05:37
So he was known in the breaking of bread that speaks of fellowship. That's how he's known now
05:43
He's known today Isn't it interesting that he is with us think of him as With us in fellowship, but having made himself invisible
05:56
Having made himself to vanish but it doesn't mean vanish It means he caused himself to be out of their sight
06:06
So he is with us in that same manner and as we fellowship with him
06:12
We know him In the breaking of bread First John 1 1 says that which was from the beginning which we have heard which we have seen with our eyes
06:23
Which we have looked upon and our hands have handled of the word of life For the life was manifested and we have seen it and bear witness and show unto you that eternal life
06:35
Which was with the father and was manifested unto us That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you that you also may have fellowship with us and truly our fellowship is with The father and with his son
06:47
Jesus Christ and these things right way into you that your joy may be full this then is the message which we have heard of him and declared you that God is light and In him is no darkness at all.
07:01
If we say that we have fellowship with him and walk in darkness. We lie and Do not the truth
07:09
I think that's where we'll stop today We'll start with verse 37
