00:17
.com All right, so We are excited this morning to have some guests with us and we have some missionaries
00:30
John and Johnny McGinnis and in 2011 they went to Costa Rica with a ministry called
00:38
Tactica and some of you that have been with Recast for a while have seen Probably seen them before they were with Bree and Church, and we have some connections through that Connection and they've been doing awesome work down there, and then just recently they
00:54
Transitioned away from Tactica to a different role with ABWE. They're sending agency and as They will explain it's given them new opportunities to connect with even more pastors in Costa Rica And they are doing just some awesome work down there.
01:10
They and their whole family and They got four beautiful kids they got
01:15
Katie and Megan and Lindy and JD what's up,
01:21
JD? fist bump dude Boom right there, so just a beautiful family, and we're really excited to have them share with us this morning so John come on up and John There we go.
01:36
I Think we're on now all right good. I keep this light keeps flickering, but I got it. We're good here. Well.
01:42
Good morning Wow Have you guys changed? I'm for the better.
01:48
I mean for good. You look great. I'm like Don showing me every all you might recognize my kid you recognize All your guys's kids, and I don't recognize any of them
01:56
They're all three years makes a big difference when you're 10 11 12 13 14 years old it just changes drastically it's incredible We want to share briefly for the first 10 minutes or so here about the ministry and what
02:08
God's been God's been doing Our mission our mission go ahead and hit the slide there
02:16
Hopefully our mission is to identify train resource and release
02:22
Church leaders in Costa Rica to fulfill their purpose to reach every man woman and child with the gospel and As we think through what our ministry is what our vision is to see a bunch of churches hundreds of churches throughout
02:35
Costa Rica unified around that same mission and that that mission is is experienced or realized when we see churches and pastors
02:45
Who have mobilized their members in their church to do ministry to live a life of ministry
02:52
And and that's our passion as was said in 2011 this month
02:57
October 2011 We moved down to down to Costa Rica Do the next slide
03:05
There we go In Psalm 34 3 it says Oh magnify the Lord with me and let us exalt his name together
03:12
And that's what you want to do this morning. We're going to magnify the Lord for the last three years because he's done Incredibly exceedingly beyond what we could ask or imagine
03:20
So please in the next 10 minutes that we have just magnify the Lord with us as you get to see what he has equipped
03:26
Us to do through his power alone and empowered us to do So we went down to Costa Rica and the first year was language school.
03:34
And let me tell you that is humbling experience When you are unable to communicate with people that you desire so desperately to communicate with and After a year, you're still not able to communicate as effectively as you have desired to communicate
03:51
It's a humbling experience and that's kind of what we experienced that first year as we're trying to build relationships and make connections and all those good things that you do because you love people and You're unable to do that in your own strength and ability and but God is able to do above what we can ask or imagine
04:09
And he allowed those connections to happen in and through his strength at the same time that we were going to language school my children went to Then international kids school that was there called sojourn and the neat thing about that is it's connected
04:23
The language school is at the top of the hill and the kids went to school at the bottom of the hill and that's awesome
04:29
And awful at the same time because the first three months as I was listening and trying to do my language school
04:34
I could hear my son Screaming as he's trying to adjust to school all in Spanish and that was hard for my mommy heart because I just wanted to go in and rescue and I couldn't and that was hard because you had to allow
04:46
God to be the equipper of what he needed to be and trans in the transition as well, so We always joke about between the two of us,
04:57
I think we make a good Spanish speaker I have no fear to speak whatsoever. I actually
05:02
I enjoy it. I love it We can talk about anything any topic doesn't matter in English or Spanish But my wife is always whispering in my ear the correct way to say it
05:12
Because I I just I just go at it and if I don't know the word I'll just draw you a nice little picture until you come up with whatever that word is and But language school was a it was a challenge.
05:21
It really drew out a lot of the Of who we really are Which sometimes tends to be an ugly picture in that process
05:31
As we said you can do the next slide as we said we went down Originally with tactic of ministries, which is an acronym teaching authorities
05:38
Christian truth and Central America Tactica has a mother organization ABWE Association of Baptist for World Evangelism and Under the umbrella of Tactica we got to do a lot of unique and interesting things on the mission field
05:50
We got to do a lot of police and tactical courses, which was a lot of fun We I got certified or I'm certified in executive protection
05:58
So I was able to teach executive protection to believe it or not to the president's
06:03
Secret Service in Costa Rica Which says something about Latin America and Costa Rica when John McGinnis who's only been in the
06:10
Army National Guard But yet got certified in executive protection is now teaching. I mean one of my friends is the driver for the vice president of the country and The guys that actually protect the president and the guys that we trained it's it's a unique opportunity
06:25
That God opened up for us in that process We were able to train them tactical training use that as a platform to share the gospel
06:35
We of course share the gospel while we taught as well as the cops that would come down and work We're Christian cops from the states that worked in there.
06:42
We taught a course on Riot control we had the Central American games down in Costa Rica and we had a almost 200 officers part of a whole riot control course that we taught
06:53
I got certified in a Defensive tactics system called Krav Maga. It's Israeli Self -defense self -defense system, and I was able to train and teach some of that while I was down there
07:02
But one of the I would say most beneficial or most enjoyable for me was
07:11
The January after I graduated we did a canine course with the which included the
07:17
Red Cross as you see right here the Red Cross search -and -rescue team as well as Firemen their search -and -rescue teams and then a handful of police officers.
07:26
We were given a donation of a dog German Shepherd that was a police certified and She she lived with us for almost three years.
07:36
We actually sadly enough had to put her down right before we came home She had cancer and so we had to make a tough decision right before we moved home
07:44
But have been donated another dog, which we're picking up on Wednesday a Labrador That's been given to us that we'll be training with the
07:51
Red Cross Search -and -rescue team when we're down there as well next slide as we
07:58
Walking out of that search -and -rescue course there was a guy by the name of Carlos Carlos Velasquez, and he's a good friend of mine and Carlos came to Christ during that police course during that that search -and -rescue course and We not knowing at the time his girlfriend
08:14
Andrea was soon to be his wife and Having met Andrea and Carlos during that course we had no idea what friendship would develop and over the course of a year and a half we
08:25
I mentored and Discipled Carlos about once every week every week for about a year and a half
08:31
And we saw this guy began to Blossom in his spiritual walk like all of us.
08:37
He had good days, and he had bad days and good weeks and bad weeks But to see him steadily grow in his faith to the point to where he and Andrea got married
08:46
And they asked us to be what's called their Padrino's It's kind of like Godfather or godmother and the way they have it in Latin culture is is it's it's not over a baby it's over their marriage and Because Carlos was led to Christ through our ministry because I decided
09:01
Carlos they asked to be there They're godparents over the spiritual aspects of their life, which is great a wonderful privilege and to this very day we still continue to get calls from them and Help them out in their spiritual walk
09:15
Next slide, please One of my main areas of ministry is hospitality we can have anywhere from Three people to fifty three people at our table for a meal, which is fantastic.
09:29
I Love hosting people. I love the opportunity to serve people in that capacity
09:35
So God has allowed us to have all types of people in our home from Tico's which is a
09:41
Costa Rican person to other missionary families to retired missionaries to People that are actually our bosses from our organization
09:51
So just opportunity as we open up our doors to be able to have a bunch of people come in under Our roof and be able to show them the love of Christ in that way and that's fantastic.
10:03
I love it Here's here's a formal invitation if you're ever in Costa Rica, we are in San Jose You'll fly into San Jose when you fly into Costa Rica almost always
10:11
Stop in give us a call. Shoot us an email. Let us know you're coming down. Our door is open It actually is kind of nice because you would speak
10:17
English, so it's even easier for us But um, but I would encourage you if you are down in Costa Rica ever give us a call
10:25
It's a country the size of West Virginia. So it's not that big of a country We probably could be able to hook up somewhere during that time as well as was said earlier there was a transition that happened about a almost a year ago now in our ministry in January and The reason why we went down with Tactica and the reason why
10:42
I went down to Costa Rica was to connect with with churches and Pastors and the the issue was cops when they come to Christ and these rougher crowd
10:51
They're not readily accepted into these churches and they're a suspect they don't like them and they're kind of this third -class
10:59
Citizen they don't they don't pay attention to them. They don't like them part of what we were doing was to connect with these pastors to help bridge that gap and In January or actually in December we kind of came to the realization that we weren't doing that yet We were so busy doing these courses and stuff which are wonderful and we love them guys are getting saved and all this discipleship time
11:19
Which is awesome but we were also beginning to feel a little burnt out because we weren't working within our specific giftedness and skill sets and As we step back and we reflected on it
11:29
We realized we've yet to really start to do what we went down to do So with much discussion with our sending church pastor regional administrators
11:37
Ryan and Gretchen rot our teammates down in Costa Rica We decided to step out from under the umbrella the specific umbrella of Tactica stay under the umbrella of a
11:45
BWE and focus on Churches focus on the connections that we can make with pastors which will help benefit these guys as we make more and more connections next next slide, please
11:58
Our ministry has developed now since January into two main areas and they're pretty broad areas the city and the country
12:04
All right, and I'm gonna talk about the city for briefly here. And then during the sermon
12:10
I'll talk a little bit about the ministry in the country, but in the city I got connected with a group of men.
12:15
The group is called pescadores de hombres, which is fishers of men and In January, I met with this group and this is actually we're heading towards Limon Providence it's a relatively dangerous area in Costa Rica and we were over there and I met some of these guys
12:32
Just a unique ministry to have with these men Pastors and and people in ministry sometime tend to be the the loneliest most frustrated people
12:44
Okay, and I say this because we've been in ministry. We were I was a pastor for 11 years before doing ministry and It's just a lonely ministry and I found out that didn't change once you moved to a different country.
13:00
I Drove on this this trip up here to actually Esteban is the guy with the crutches there.
13:07
You can barely see him corner there We're driving up to Esteban's house and I had about two hours in the cars in the car with them and all these guys
13:14
And we're in a big van and I said guys If if if if a missionary came to you and he was a blank slate he said what is it that you want?
13:22
What what would you say and I'm expecting to hear what we could use help building this building we could help with this we need
13:27
This project we need all of them said We just need love We'd like we'd like a missionary or someone to come in and love on our family to love on our kids
13:39
To to really just pour into to us because we don't have that with anybody
13:44
Which is exactly as pastors we see We we it's just a very lonely ministry so in the city
13:51
One of the main ministries that God has opened up for us is just that loving on these pastors We have them in our home
13:57
We could tell you stories and have time about meals that we have with them and some of them were very unique meals these
14:03
Breakfasts that we had because you guys don't eat sweets for breakfast So they did not like the waffles with the strawberries and all that stuff.
14:11
They did like the biscuits and gravy They don't have that in Costa Rica and they were enamored by that They couldn't believe that wonderful salsa blanca this white gravy stuff.
14:19
They just Yeah, they loved it to to playing
14:24
Phase 10 or playing Dutch Blitz at our table with another missionary or with another pastor
14:30
The other ministry that we have these pastors in the city is connecting Always connecting churches here in the
14:36
States with these churches down there to be an encouragement to them Example of that as we had our church team come down From Berean Baptist Church They came down to a did a 10 -day missions trip with the man in the center with the green kind of plaid and wearing a hat his name is
14:51
Marco Chavarria and They did a whole missions trip with those guys and just an incredible blessing that churches in the states that we can be
14:58
To these Costa Rican pastors you can hit the next slide and I'm gonna wrap it up here real quick I'll talk more a little bit a little bit later about a guard though a guard this guy there with his thumb up That was actually on a trip that we took into the mountains and God has just opened an incredible Ministry into the mountains of Costa Rica into an area the
15:17
Chiripo Mountain, which is the highest mountain. It's about twelve thousand four hundred feet With incredible opportunities for us to go in there and do ministry, which
15:25
I'm gonna share with a little bit later But that is going to be I would say fifty to sixty percent of our ministry
15:31
It's working out in the countries with these guys I just wanted to as we wrap this up here and and give you guys an opportunity to interact
15:39
Thank you for The opportunity to be your hands and feet in Costa Rica we want to thank you for the opportunity to represent you guys as a church and The support that you give us not just in finances, but through prayer through emails
15:55
We we love it and we need it Please continue to pray for us back on our little display thing in the corner there
16:03
You can see we have We went from prayer cards to bookmarks. We think it a little more practical
16:09
We'll kind of put them in your Bibles or you can they hang on the fridge just like everything else does so you can I would encourage you to get one of them and and and please be praying for us
16:17
There's also an email signup sheet back there. We send out an email every month. Please sign up back there
16:24
If you're not on that list, we'd love to Make sure that you're getting that information Also on Facebook.
16:29
We're there. It's real tricky. It's John slash Johnny McGinnis just look for us.
16:35
I believe it's on the It's on the card as well in the back look for us on Facebook Just let us know who you are as you send a request
16:42
That'd be helpful because we get a lot of requests from a lot of people But I appreciate you guys and we really thank you for the opportunity to to serve the
16:51
Lord in Costa Rica And to be your hands and feet there. Let me uh, let me jump on a soapbox here for one second before I get started.
17:15
I hope You don't take this for granted If I do cry, this is the time when it's gonna happen.
17:22
Just so you know, I hope you don't take it for granted Coming to church on Sunday Coming together worshiping
17:29
God serving God together One thing we have noticed being being missionaries
17:38
We miss this Now we do that in Costa Rica. We do it in Spanish But our first two years or a year when we're learning
17:46
Spanish and then a year as we're adjusting that's just it's just hard It's hard to go to church when you don't understand 90 % of what is being said or sung about and your kids understand none of it
18:00
And that's a hard hard transition to go through three years later. You know, we're getting it we get the messages
18:07
We're getting we're understanding. We're being challenged by God's Word the message I'll talk a little bit later today is actually a message that was preached to me
18:16
In Spanish, so you're getting my John McGinnis translation of the Spanish We're getting challenged in the language and by God's Word, which is great
18:27
But too often as Americans we go to church because we have to go to church we should go to church It's the good thing to do.
18:32
I want my kids to understand, you know, God's stuff and And we do it because you know, we sing these songs and yeah, they're great but How do
18:42
I really like that song? It was too slow or the songs too fast Or I don't we always have these worship battles and fights and you know what?
18:49
It's not about us It's not about our preferences. It's not about our styles. It's not about any of that.
18:54
It is all about God and We take it for granted and we feel that church is all about me
19:02
And I'll tell you as a family that doesn't get this regularly we miss it It's my challenge as I step off my soapbox.
19:09
Don't take it for granted Couple questions. What is your mission in life?
19:18
What is your mission in life several years back? Stephen Covey was really popular
19:25
Seven Habits of Highly Effective People and he's still pretty popular now But really popular back several years in the night in late 90s
19:31
And it was all about making writing a mission statement for your family writing a mission statement for your life. What is
19:37
Your mission in life, why are you here? Why are you here today at church?
19:46
Why are you here in Matawan? For us why why are we in Costa Rica when we're there?
19:53
Why are you here on planet Earth? What is the reason what is the purpose how do you spend your time?
20:07
What consumes your life and what you do? Many of us and we would probably be there too had we been living here
20:16
A lot of that is a kids sports and kids activities and things that are going on in school. What consumes your time?
20:24
What does God? want you to do You turn your
20:31
Bibles over to Matthew 9 We tell you a little introduction here to this message
20:39
Several months ago my wife and I were getting ready for church and I'd hit this
20:45
I hit I hit the stage in my life in the ministry Where I was pretty vanilla
20:53
If you know what I mean, just pretty That was about it that's the best way to say that you know,
21:00
I'm Christian life is a bit of a roller coaster. Sometimes they're yeah, you had these great highs you go to camp
21:06
You do something you have great highs and sometimes we have these low valleys. I wasn't in a high It wasn't in a valley. I was kind of in that just kind of plodding going on and doing life and It's just take it, you know,
21:18
I'm in Costa Rica this I'm a missionary. We should be living up here most the time we think But that's not truth
21:25
And we're just like what is it we're doing Well, why are we here?
21:31
We're tired. We were missing home. I mean I was we were we have our moments of homesickness where it just kills you
21:37
Missing family missing friends love the Spanish language guys I fought for three years to learn the
21:43
Spanish language and it's still a fight. I love it, but I hate it All right.
21:49
I mean so one morning Sunday morning We get ready to go to church and I'm like, I'm writing in my journal and talking to God in my journal.
21:55
I said God Please don't let pastor Oscar preach You got a new pastor
22:03
Oscar. He is a great man. I could tell you stories about this man The stuff I've seen him do in his life the example
22:09
He said his daughter was killed a year ago by a freak car accident the car actually got knocked out of gear rolled down a hill and killed her hit her and killed her and To see this man walk through one of the darkest hours of his life.
22:22
He's a rock Okay, so by what I'm saying here, I do by no means want to diminish him.
22:28
He is an incredible man But he's an old guy in Spanish with a raspy voice
22:37
So he starts talking he kind of kind of preaches like this. Of course, it's all in Spanish And he gets going and he starts and anyway, he gets really going in a message.
22:47
He adds the little phrase bae At the end of what he's saying What is bae?
22:53
It's nothing he just gets going and he adds that so it's not a day Yeah, and you're like, I have no idea what this man is saying
22:59
I mean for a gringo and an American I had no idea zero what this man was even saying and finally you realize
23:06
Oh, he's adding bae to it So you cut that out and you start to make a little bit more sense But I'm talking I got a stare at him while he's preaching and I'm like God Please don't let don't let him preach.
23:18
I need to hear from your word. I need to hear I need to be challenged I need to see what What what I have to learn that today so God graciously did that He didn't preach that morning instead it was a missionary that preached and This missionary is a
23:33
Costa Rican missionary to the Dominican Republic and His Spanish was crystal clear.
23:41
I'm talking my wife and I I think we understood probably 99 % of what he said Unfortunately for us because apparently he had the message that God wanted us to hear and it was it is the message that I want to Share with you guys
23:54
This morning. It was a great reminder of why I am doing what I'm doing why we
24:01
Do what we do and what we should be doing. Did you know that Jesus was here on earth with a mission?
24:12
In How long was Jesus's public ministry and I know more or less three years Was about the time that Jesus actually had a public ministry on this earth.
24:20
Did you know that Jesus accomplished? The entire mission that God gave him in three years Have you ever thought about that God gave him a specific mission a specific time frame
24:33
And he accomplished that in three years Have you ever thought that God has given you a specific mission
24:42
That God has given you a mission that needs to be done Because he has All right
24:47
We if you're here and you and you believe in Jesus Christ as your personal Savior and Lord if you are in a relationship
24:53
With him doesn't mean you're perfect doesn't mean you're you're you got it all together and you understand everything But you are walking with the
24:59
Lord He wants you to Do something he wants you to serve him.
25:07
We are we are put into service Okay God is looking for people
25:16
Who will carry out his mission and his vision? So what is his mission and vision?
25:22
I'm gonna read here a pretty Typical I would say missionary passage
25:28
Matthew 9 35 to 38 and Jesus went through went throughout all the cities in the villages teaching in their synagogues and Proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction and when he saw the crowds he had compassion on them he had compassion for them because they were harassed and Helpless like sheep without a shepherd and then he said to his disciples the harvest is plentiful
25:53
But the laborers are few therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers
26:00
Into his harvest. The first thing I want to point out here is
26:06
The very first phrase and Jesus went throughout all the cities and villages. Let me start just stop right there
26:13
You know how easy it is for me to stay where I'm at To stay comfortable.
26:21
I Love the fact that you guys are meeting here in a school and that you weren't meeting in the school three years ago
26:27
Because it forces you guys to move It forces you to shuffle things up I've every church that I've shared this at and usually
26:34
I only have a few minutes to do it. So this is incredible They have their seats, you know, and maybe you do even now here where like I always sit right here
26:42
This is my seat in the 20 years. I've been in church. This is my seat Okay. Well God asks sometimes to move around To interact with people around us to see to talk to people
26:53
Jesus went throughout the cities and the villages He didn't stay in one place Jesus was mobile So let me just stop right there.
27:00
How mobile are you and I? How mobile are we when it comes to talking sharing reaching talking and reaching out to people
27:10
Are we faithful in sharing at work? Are we faithful in sharing? Christ sharing our lives with people at the grocery store at the gas station
27:18
As we're on vacation as we're out and about Do you sometimes purposefully? go out
27:26
It says he he went throughout All the cities in the villages doing some stuff here teaching
27:35
In their synagogues proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and affliction
27:44
Three things that I think God Wants us to do As we follow christ's example.
27:50
The first thing is going to be preaching Sorry teaching teaching in their synagogues
27:57
As we look at God's word And we look at the world around us Are there lessons that we need that that need to be taught?
28:05
Yes, or no God's word tells us everything we need to know about how to live a life how to live god and godliness how to Go through the good times the bad times the hard times the easy times
28:19
But sometimes those lessons have to be taught Now, how can we teach there are a lot of different teaching styles a lot of different teaching methods, right?
28:25
This is the teaching method Ironically enough these teaching this teaching method tends to be the least effective
28:32
Okay standing up and teaching a lecture type. This is the least effective way to communicate Okay, the interaction is the communication.
28:40
That's why eye contact is important A lot of question and answer while we're going at this makes sense and head nodding those things are important Sometimes we teach people by our examples
28:49
All right think in your life and how many lessons have you learned because someone else went through it?
28:55
And you're able to watch them All right. I'm in ministry today probably because of my older brother steve
29:02
My older brother steve. He's six years older than me. He was um, He played football And was a quarterback
29:09
Uh, so naturally I played football and I was a quarterback. I was a very short Weak armed quarterback, but I we did triple option.
29:16
So it worked out. Okay We were still a losing team, but that's all right My brother steve ran the hurdles guess what
29:22
I did Ran the hurdles in track steve did play basketball I wrestled.
29:27
Okay, my my basketball coach said you did you need to wrestle? That's what he told me I fouled out of every game my seventh grade year every game.
29:34
I fouled out. So he said try wrestling. So I did um My brother steve pole vaulted in high school and college
29:42
Okay, I pole vaulted in high school and college my brother steve Is a pastor
29:49
I kind of always grew up knowing I wanted to be a pastor whether it was through steve's example or what but I you know,
29:55
I followed the lessons. He learned how I don't remember getting in trouble a lot growing up, which is Pretty amazing because I have an identical twin brother
30:03
And you would think that having identical twin brother, we would get ourselves into a lot of trouble Um, we did when we were little but the older we get we got we really didn't have a big rebellious streak in us
30:12
We didn't have that. We want to try this and try this and try this why? Well, I saw steve try this and try this and try this and I saw the consequences so we teach through our examples
30:24
All right Are we people who are going out? And are we teaching the world around us by the way, we live our lives
30:33
The next one, um, I would say would be a given proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom Are we people who preach the gospel?
30:43
Are we now what is the gospel start there? gospel means good news The good news that we have a hope that if I were to die today,
30:53
I have a hope that I will be spend eternity in heaven And it was interesting.
30:59
I got an email this I told you about this. Um, This dog that's going to be given to us a donation dog Um, it's a labrador retriever
31:07
Um, I won't go into great detail, but let's just say it's a really really good labrador retriever
31:13
Okay, and we're driving to maryland actually to get it it's an incredible donation to our family and we can use in ministry
31:19
I emailed a guy and I said, you know We're going to leave on tuesday be there by thursday because we're going to spend a day in washington dc
31:26
Is that okay? And he didn't get back with me So I emailed him again a couple nights ago and his response was you have to excuse me
31:33
I've i've had a really rough week. My wife went home to be with the lord yesterday Okay and then we talked a little bit in the email about Life and then some a little bit about this dog
31:46
But is it interesting that as a believer? He responded My wife went home to be with the lord
31:53
And I know this man a little bit but what i've even seen so right just right now shows me
31:58
And what i've my interaction with him is that this is a guy that he has a hope and a faith and trust in jesus christ
32:06
One of the deepest darkest hardest times you can go through We have hope The world
32:13
Has a cancer called sin And you and I have the answer And that is the gospel that jesus christ came to this earth 2 000 years ago
32:20
That he lived a perfect life and then he died for our sins Are we people who faithfully share that?
32:29
Are we people who live our life in such a way that it just oozes? the gospel
32:36
And then it says healing Again Teaching the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction
32:45
Does the world around us need healing? How many marriages do we know that are falling apart?
32:52
How many lives do we know are shattered how many children do we know are having issues and need help
33:02
Okay again We are given a hope We we have a a something in us
33:10
That is more than just us We have the holy spirit working that wants to reach these people wants to help them and wants to heal them
33:18
This is what jesus was doing He went around teaching in the synagogues preaching and healing
33:27
This is an example that jesus christ gave us and it's something that you and I can be doing every day of our life
33:33
There's no reason whatsoever. We can't be a following christ's example verse 36
33:39
When he saw the crowds he had compassion for them because they were harassed and helpless like sheep without a shepherd
33:46
Um, if you if you know me at all And a few of you know me well Compassion is not my forte
33:55
All right. I um I was one that uh
34:00
We take these spiritual gift inventories online and all that type of stuff mercy for me If it's like 1 to 40 or whatever it is, my mercy is like a three
34:09
Okay, uh when my kids bless their hearts as they bang their heads when they're little kids on the table
34:14
The extent of my mercy was to rub it rub it. So my kids are running around like this just like Okay, it's just i'm not naturally a compassionate person i'm more so now than what
34:26
I used to be And it's amazing what happens when god opens your eyes to to more and more issues and problems and and different situations and circumstances
34:34
Are we people who have compassion for those around us when your neighbor
34:45
Irritates you a little bit But they don't know christ Do you look at them and get irritated or do you look at them with compassion?
34:55
Story from our our from my wife's family actually my wife's uh neighbor my wife's family, their neighbor's name is uh waldo and uh
35:06
Waldo shared a driveway with mom and dad And it was one of the things where mom and dad owned it's kind of confusing here
35:12
Mom and dad owns the property but the driveway is on the property and he has the ability to go in and out of it I still don't understand all that and waldo would do things like he'd put
35:20
Gravel down on it, which is okay except the fact that that gravel gets pushed over into the yard and and You know, he would get irritated when things were like kids couldn't sled down that because it makes it too slippery
35:30
He can't get out and and they were just always this battle With waldo And he had an extra he had a way to get out if he wanted to But he just never did it
35:40
And me and my youth, I got to know my wife. We dated she was 15. I was 16. We started dating
35:46
Um, or if you can't even count that as dating that at that age, but uh, so i've known my wife almost my whole life
35:52
My and I remember just thinking why in the world does mom and dad not do something about this? Why would they keep taking it on the chin from this neighbor from this guy?
36:01
Why? Because waldo needs christ Because they wanted to have a good testimony with their neighbor
36:08
So they continued to have compassion on him Even when it was frustrating even when they didn't feel like it and I looked at it.
36:16
I'm like, this is ridiculous They looked at it and said, you know what? We want to maintain a good testimony with our neighbors And they had the right perspective
36:25
And he said to his disciples The harvest is plentiful but the laborers Are few
36:37
The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few That is there's probably not been a truer statement written applicable for these days today
36:47
Having seen the world around us So many people need jesus christ And there are so few believers
36:55
That are willing to go. Did you know and I didn't know this? Um, I was at a missions conference this past weekend and the statement was made the united states is the is the third largest
37:03
Uh mission field right now in the world I mean who would ever thought that I?
37:10
That's not my paradigm I grew up in the church where we send the missionaries. No, we send the missionaries
37:16
Now the u .s is the third largest mission field Because people need to hear jesus christ You know everybody here
37:25
If you are a believer if you have followed follow jesus christ You you you do so because someone went
37:33
Someone shared that with you. Let me ask a question who likes coffee All right.
37:40
I'm gonna go back here I saw your hand up Hopefully don't kill a microphone here.
37:49
This is a bag of coffee from town of frilies. It's for you I'm not above bribery for people to like me
37:58
This coffee is from the town of frilies. I remember I told you about um The the ministry that we're going to have out out in the country.
38:05
I'm going to share that story briefly with you Um, and then watch a quick video and then wrap things up Frilies is a small town if you walk out my front door
38:14
And you open up the gate you step out and you turn to the right. There's a big mountain right in front of you Okay and if you drive over that mountain, which only takes about It takes about 30 minutes to get to the to the mountain unless there's traffic then it's two hours
38:27
We've done both Um, it's about an hour over the mountain Is a little turn off. There's a town called frilies
38:34
And frilies is a pretty easy town to get to for the most part if you don't get car sick Because it is a mountain.
38:40
I mean, it's windy mountain roads You branch off of frilies and there's another town called san andres, which is a whole nother story
38:45
That's gravel and we do that a lot and that's when you're driving on the two track road with a two or three hundred foot cliff on the side the whole way, which is scary the first time it's fun after that, but do do some of that in reverse and it's even scarier, but um
39:02
We're in in frilies There's a a church called puertas eternas, which is uh, eternal gates or eternal doors
39:09
And in that church is a guy by the name of edgardo And if you remember the picture the guy guard that was a guy with his thumbs up Edgardo is a great
39:17
Friend of ours. I was in this group pescadores de hombres fishers of men and this guy walks in And it's edgardo and all these pastors are talking to him and they're talking about this man who lives in the in the area of tarzan
39:29
I'm like i've never heard of tarzan. He lives over in the area of tarzan in costa rica exactly
39:37
And finally the most conservative pastor there his name is his name is um Huh?
39:44
Ronald thank you. I'm like I can't remember his name ronald ronald goes, you know tarzan Oh Tarzan, okay
39:55
They meaning he lives out in the jungles he lives out in the middle of mountains in the middle of these jungles and um
40:04
Edgardo has a ministry into the mountains and what he does is he he hikes in Uh to chiripo mountain area
40:11
Um, it's about a day hike six seven hours into the mountains Where you can't get in there by anything but walking in possibly on horse
40:19
Just those are about the two ways you can get into it and he works with the cabacar indians Okay, and I had heard about him three years ago or two and a half years ago, but I never met him
40:28
Finally i'm sitting down talking to edgardo and he's telling me about all these stories where they go in They work with these kids and these these these indigenous people and then they hike back out two three four or five days later and i'm like, you know edgardo if If you ever get a chance next time you go if you have a spot i'd love to go with you
40:45
Okay, i'm saying that as the gringo missionary who would like to go in the jungles. It sounds like a fun thing Two weeks later, he gives me a call he goes we're leaving in two weeks and I have a spot for you to go with us and i'm like All right.
40:58
All right. Well We'll we'll go I had I showed up for the he explained everything I needed to know in spanish
41:04
And if you know legato, he's very hard to understand on the phone. He kind of I can't do this with a microphone. He kind of kind of talks like kind of talks like this on the phone
41:12
And you don't understand much of what he's saying. You can't understand him He explained everything I need to know about this trip
41:19
And I caught none of it So I show up to the mount I show up to a guard though to meet To go out there and all
41:25
I kept hearing them talking about was the gringo backpack gringo backpack Which is never a good sign And the gringo backpack was a typical backpack for me.
41:33
It was an internal frame about 40 pounds Which is about 30 pounds too heavy
41:40
Because we walked three and a half hours like this straight One hour straight down another two and a half or so straight about like that again
41:51
And about two and a half hours into this hike And i'm in relatively good shape My legs were cooked.
41:58
I'm cramping up. Um, I I hit a point where i'm like I I don't know that i'm gonna make this hike
42:05
You know, we're about 4 000 feet up and i'm just like i'm dying I'm, absolutely dying and at that point in time one of the most humbling things happened to me in my life
42:14
I costa rican took my backpack And i've done a lot of backpacking And i've carried a lot of other people's backpacks
42:21
I have never in my entire life ever Given my backpack up to someone else
42:28
But I couldn't have made it So they took my backpack And it was horribly
42:33
I was mad at myself. I was embarrassed. I was humiliated And god used that experience
42:41
To to weave me into this group When they can see the gringo who doesn't have all the answers who can't do anything just To see him be humbled
42:52
God continued to open up more doors and avenues of ministry for us with them Uh, I went in there. We had a great ministry with these guys
42:58
We passed out clothes and stuff spent four days in the mountains there with them And then we hiked back out.
43:04
I wanted my wife to see this ministry. So in august I drug her with me Only this time my pack was 16 pounds and hers was 10
43:12
And it was a hard hard trip, but we did it It was a lot easier for me because it was a lot lighter
43:19
But we made it in and we did a children's ministries where you know, the um, the samaritans, uh, uh samaritan's purse there it is with um, uh franklin graham the the boxes
43:29
We carried we hiked those in It was incredible to be on that side of that project and actually hike those in and pass them out 40
43:36
Or so those to the kids. It was incredible to see okay. God has opened them an incredible passion for ministry
43:43
I have a video here. It's about three and a half minutes long I want to show the video real quick and then i'm going to wrap it up with some challenging, uh,
43:51
An application for us in this passage This is as you see this video. I will say you'll see the um,
43:57
There is going to be sound for that Okay You you see the map that is actually the route that we hike so you see the thing moving
44:06
That's what we hiked This is the copy of their new testament bible
44:15
They just got this in april Before april they did not have a complete copy of the new testament bible
44:21
The old testament is being translated right now as we're speaking as we're here I show you this because There are people who need they needed christ
44:35
Three years. I lived in costa rica and we didn't even realize they were there Didn't even realize it. They are literally three hours behind in my backyard three hours
44:44
These people have never heard the gospel. We brought in the jesus film on a horseback with a generator
44:50
Long story with my ipad and projector and they'd never they'd never seen movies tvs. They had no idea
44:55
We were literally explaining to them as moving pictures Our mission is to partner beside a gardo
45:03
My mission is not to hike in the mountains all the time and do all this My my mission is to work beside a gardo
45:10
And to help him as he mobilizes his church his members and his people to think
45:17
Like we see here in matthew To go to teach to preach to have compassion
45:24
To bring hope to the people around them it ends here therefore
45:33
Pray earnestly for the lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest Do we pray earnestly for the lord to send out?
45:44
laborers Parents that might be your children Grandparents probably going to be your grandkids
45:51
Or it might be you the crazy thing about Missions whether it's stateside or whether it's abroad
45:59
Age does not matter Well, i'm too old to do this i'm too no, you're not you're really not
46:06
It's just it's just a fact god can use you When you are on his mission When you are motivated to reach those around you.
46:14
I want to end here with the application Ask yourself Are you on god's mission?
46:21
Are you teaching preaching and healing if you're not What are you doing
46:31
If you're not doing that you're doing something What is that? Ask yourself
46:39
Are you affected by what you see? around you Do you let these things come into your life and actually impact you and have compassion on them finally
46:53
You ask yourself am I willing to join the workforce Am I willing to be one of those people that goes?
47:01
And like I said, it doesn't have to be overseas missions It could be right here in madeleine.
47:06
It could be in the neighboring areas It could be throughout michigan or throughout the u .s. But am I willing to be
47:11
One of those people that god uses to change people's lives That's the message that I was challenged with on the day that I was feeling sorry for myself
47:23
That's when I said god, please let this guy not preach because I kind of need to hear what he has to say And at that time,
47:28
I kind of wish I didn't understand what he said I realized that you know You got to be doing something
47:36
Either i'm on god's mission or i'm not And my challenge for you guys and for myself is to continue to to pursue
47:43
What god has for us to do and live our life the way he does. Let me close our time in prayer Lord I thank you for the opportunity to speak to look in your word
47:52
To be challenged. I pray lord that you would help us to Faithfully serve you throughout our our everyday life whether it's here in madeleine or or down in costa rica
48:03
May you be honored and glorified by the by the way that we teach preach Help people in their lives and in their marriages as we show compassion to those around us.
