Contemplative Prayer

Liver shivers... impressions... God speaking to you... Mike discusses contemplative prayer labyrinth (say that 5 times fast), an unbiblical practice that is spreading these days.

If you have a desire to hear God from the inside.. you are eroding the doctrine of Sola Scriptura. The sufficiency of scripture is at stake and should not be abandoned for mysticism.

What is mysticism? From Reckless Faith by John MacArthur:

The mystic disdains rational understanding and seeks truth instead through the feelings, the imagination, personal visions, inner voices, private illumination, or other purely subjective means.

Christian mysticism used to be underground, but it has gone mainstream. But is it biblical?

Hebrews 1:1-2 says:

1Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, 2but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world.

Let's say you do "hear from God" on the inside.. how do you know it's Him and not a stomach-ache? We are all affected by the fall in every area of our lives (Jeremiah 17:9 - The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?) - including those "things" upon which we would rely on to tell us what "God has said" to us inside ourselves.

Truth drives our experiences, our experiences should not drive truth. This is the fundamental concern here. It's impossible to discern which teachings/teachers are true and which are false unless we use an objective source - this being scripture:

The Scriptures nowhere teach that God gives us any knowledge through 'spiritual experience.' Knowledge of spiritual matters is always linked to God's propositional revelation, the written Word. -- Winfried Corduan, Mysticism, an Evangelical Option?, (Grand Rapids, Michigan: Zondervan, 1991), p. 120.

One of the key influences in the recent decades is the book "Celebration of Discipline" by Richard Foster - bringing this mystic/contemplative prayer into the mainstream. COD teaches that you are to empty your mind (mysticism) so that it would be filled (this is not in keeping with biblical teaching on prayer using the mind).

Listen in on this important topic about a dangerous unbiblical practice.
