Matthew 24: Past or Present- Israel & Hamas Pt. 2
1 view
Part 2: As we look on the news and see Israel being attacked and retaliating, many Christians are saying this is prophesied in scripture and actually what Matthew chapter 24 is talking about. Listen as Pastor Jeff Durbin continues to go through that chapter to see what it really says.
- 00:07
- That he just invoked upon them is not novel. No amongst the covenant people of God It's the same exact thing that Yahweh indicts his people for in Isaiah chapter 1
- 00:20
- When it says that they draw near to him with an outward show of religion Oh, yeah And inwardly they neglect the weightier matters of justice and the law which demonstrate the fruit of righteousness in their community
- 00:31
- Which they are completely devoid of yeah completely devoid of which is why throughout Matthew's story
- 00:36
- What is Jesus condemning his Jewish audience of you draw near to me with your lips, but your hearts are far from me
- 00:43
- Right. He's condemning the same idea there. Very good And and what's really important here is what you just identified is this is a common appeal of God Yeah from the
- 00:52
- Old Testament to his covenant people where he says these same things Jesus is taking up the mantle of a prophet which is why there's this constant emphasis through chapters 21
- 01:03
- Through 24 of the blood of the prophets The prophets were the righteous ones that were sent to testify of the truth.
- 01:10
- And what did they do? They killed them. They stoned them and then God sent to them the prototypical prophet.
- 01:17
- He sent to them himself He came to them himself the heir which Hebrews tells us who the heir is the heir of all things
- 01:24
- It's the Lord Jesus and they could and they killed him, right? and so there is innocent blood upon the hands of this generation and that culminates in the innocent blood of Christ himself the
- 01:36
- Messiah that they've rejected and What is important to note is what we've been describing this entire time is
- 01:42
- God's already talked this way about his covenant people before these are the same indictments You would get in Isaiah chapter 1 you see these indictments in Jeremiah and Ezekiel This is the kind of thing that God would say to his people and Jesus is just saying it again to them
- 01:54
- Yeah, but what's important to note here is has everybody noticed have you noticed? Who the mark is here
- 02:02
- What's the target over in this whole thing for Matthew 20 so far to this point? Is this about Putin?
- 02:09
- Is this about the world powers of our day China? Who's the who's the target over since Matthew's gospel begins, but Matthew 20 up to this point?
- 02:20
- Who's the target over it's over the covenant -breaking Jews. It's over the wicked leadership of Jerusalem in Jesus day
- 02:26
- His targets over them He's a you and parable of vineyard and the wedding feast and you don't over the worship of the true
- 02:33
- God, right? Because what does that do it drags the name of God through the mud? Which is why the promise of the new covenant is that God will vindicate the holiness of his name through a new covenant people
- 02:43
- So the point is if we take Matthew 24 now and start saying it's about me 21st century me and this is about my stuff in my world.
- 02:56
- It's like, okay I've been reading Matthew 20 now through 23 and there's no discussion about anybody but the target being over The unfaithful
- 03:05
- Jews the covenant -breaking Jews of Jesus day saying woe to you. Woe to you. Woe to you blind guides Woe to you
- 03:11
- So he gives these seven woes to them and that is declaring a curse upon them and this is what he says in verse 34 of 23 says therefore
- 03:19
- I send you prophets and wise men and Scribes some of you will kill and crucify and some of you will flog in your synagogues and persecute from town to town
- 03:27
- Here it is. So that on you Stop, please
- 03:34
- That's what we talked about. Who is Jesus talking to so that on you
- 03:40
- The covenant -breaking Jews of his day this these leadership scribes and Pharisees So that on you may come all the righteous blood shed on earth from the blood of righteous
- 03:50
- Abel to the blood of Zechariah the son Of Barakaya whom you murdered between the sanctuary and the altar
- 03:55
- Truly I say to you all these things will come upon this
- 04:01
- Generation who's talking to is he talking to you or is it very specific? Is there a very specific target?
- 04:09
- That Jesus has he's talking to them and that covenant -breaking leadership, but it gets worse more identification
- 04:17
- He says Oh Jerusalem Jerusalem the city that kills the prophets and stones those who were sent to it how often what
- 04:25
- I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings and you
- 04:31
- Were not willing. Who's he talking to? Yeah, those that shut the kingdom in people's faces talking to that Jewish leadership that cuts the people off and Jesus says you weren't willing
- 04:41
- For I tell you you will not see me again until you say blessed is who comes in the name of the Lord now ready? Oh and verse 38 see your house is left to you desolate.
- 04:50
- Yeah. Sorry. I skipped that. Sorry Your house is left to you desolate. Well, he just cleansed the temple for the second time.
- 04:57
- They should have known That's what that meant, right? He's the true priest and Jesus came for that second cleansing and now he indicts them and he says your house is left to you desolate
- 05:05
- What's the context? Jewish Jerusalem Jewish leadership scribes and Pharisees Covenant -breaking people of God those who are supposed to faithfully bring forth the fruit from the vineyard that God says
- 05:18
- Well, they said he's gonna destroy those miserable wretches, right? Your house is left to you about desolate and by the way, if you read
- 05:24
- Luke's accounts The Matthew Mark and Luke Matthew Mark and Luke on this on the all of a discourse is interesting because like some of it isn't like chronological
- 05:33
- It's just like flipped or like Luke will give you like the Gentile interpretation of what
- 05:39
- Matthew is saying Like the abomination that causes desolation Some people are like I've never read Daniel have no access to Daniel I have no idea what you're talking about and Luke just goes when you see
- 05:48
- Jerusalem surrounded by armies, right flee But it's interesting because Luke here in all of a discourse he says behold these are the days of Vengeance in order that all that is written may be fulfilled
- 06:02
- What days are days? No, the days that they're in they were expecting this judgment.
- 06:08
- It's all part of what was coming upon them Those were the days of vengeance and when we take this clearly covenantal
- 06:18
- Jewish leadership Jerusalem 1st -century Discourse and we put it on us
- 06:24
- It's like it's it's absolutely Abandoning the Bible to say I'm not gonna pay attention to its historical context
- 06:32
- I'm not gonna pay attention to the to the original audience I'm not even gonna pay attention to the fact that actually this demonstrates that Jesus is the
- 06:40
- Messiah Because it all happened exactly like he said it would I'm gonna take this and just I've got to have it for my generation
- 06:48
- I've got to have it for future to me and it's like but hold on now These are the holy words of God that prove that Jesus is the
- 06:54
- Messiah Because it happened on time as a and as planned look now look it says Your house is left to you desolate and then it says
- 07:03
- Jesus left the temple and was going away When his disciples came to point out to him the buildings of the temple, but he answered them
- 07:09
- You see all these things. Do you not truly I say to you there will not be left here one stone upon another that will
- 07:15
- Not be thrown down. All right, there's a there's a there's a lot there just in that little snippet
- 07:20
- Do you want to say just in regards to the presence of God leaving his people? Yeah in the
- 07:27
- Old Testament Yep, what happened when God's people worshipped idols? What happened when they brought idols into the temple itself?
- 07:33
- God declared it Ichabod and his presence departed from the worship of his people and in what's actually
- 07:39
- Fascinating about this particular section is that as Jesus declares to them your house is left to you desolate cleanse the temple indicts that generation
- 07:47
- He says woe to you. Woe to you seven woes Upon the leadership there that generation and he says this generation.
- 07:54
- It's all gonna happen to you. He then says as He's leaving the temple and they're like freaking out now, obviously they've heard
- 08:01
- Jesus say your house left you desolate So they're pointing out little temples and Jesus says truly I say to you They will not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down So they're like the temple
- 08:10
- Jesus and he says not one stone left upon another Which is significant. You mean the temple right the temple, right?
- 08:17
- Again, I understand what's the context here Jewish leadership Jewish people house is desolate. These are the days of vengeance you you you and Then the temple is gonna be destroyed
- 08:27
- But what's it say here? Jesus left the temple and then it goes verse 3 as he sat on the
- 08:32
- Mount of Olives the disciples Came to him privately saying tell us When will these things be and will be the sign of your coming and the end of the age?
- 08:42
- It's not the end of the physical cosmos physical world aeon aeon the end of the age
- 08:47
- That's the question the age there was a Old Covenant age. There was a age of the
- 08:53
- Messiah coming They understood the distinctions in the Old Testament a New Testament. I won't go into the full discussion today
- 08:58
- It'll take us far field and and I would love to just do a whole big Bible discussion on it But for now, they associate now the destruction of this temple.
- 09:06
- This is going away So what's the sign of your coming and the end of the age?
- 09:12
- Now real quick beautiful thing if you're a careful student of Scripture You'll recognize that Jesus just declared desolation on the temple and then
- 09:22
- Jesus who is Yahweh God in human flesh leaves the temple says it's gonna be destroyed and now he's on the
- 09:29
- Mount of Olives now again a careful student Of Scripture will recognize. Oh my goodness That's precisely what happened in the
- 09:35
- Old Testament is That when God's glory departed from the temple it went out from the temple and it rested on the
- 09:43
- Mount of Olives And now the incarnate one God as a man takes exactly the same
- 09:52
- Direction he leaves the temple and now he's in the Mount of Olives all of this should have been a signal
- 09:58
- Remember how that last temple was destroyed When God's glory departed it and went to the
- 10:03
- Mount of Olives Your house is being left to you desolate. It's about to happen again And so they are now asking for the signs and here's the thing week again
- 10:11
- I did a year and a half or so on this but let's just keep it in context He's already said your house has left you desolate
- 10:18
- It's all gonna happen in this generation The target is over the Jewish people of his day that generation the near demonstrative not that generation that sees these things but this generation so then they ask the question signs of your coming and the end of the age and Jesus answered them see that no one leads you astray for many will come in my name saying
- 10:39
- I am the Christ and they will Lead many astray now. This is interesting You could do a study yourself
- 10:46
- I challenge you to do so read Josephus Josephus records that During the time of the first century even after the time of Jesus There were a number of messianic movements that started some people like led people people out into the wilderness
- 11:01
- And and some of them created great conflict and those guys all died and they stayed dead But there were there were a number of false messiahs in the first century and Jesus warns them
- 11:11
- There's gonna be false Christs and there was you can even make an argument internally from Scripture.
- 11:17
- Oh, yeah Yeah in the New Testament Simon the Magnus. Yeah. Yeah as well as externally That's right And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars see that you are not alarmed for this must take place
- 11:27
- But the end is not yet now, by the way, very important. I've always made this point when I talk about this I think it's an important point wars and rumors of wars
- 11:35
- Now, let's be honest at most Every time of human history except for the
- 11:40
- Pax Romana the piece of Rome This prophecy of you're gonna hear wars and rumors of wars would be all
- 11:47
- Not very impressive. Okay, right so Tuesday, right like today my goodness
- 11:53
- How many wars are taking place in the world right now? So if a prophet came today in the 21st century and said there's wars and rumors of wars
- 12:00
- That'll be like a sign of my of my coming everyone ago. Yeah, that's just what that narrows it down like Or like even like in the
- 12:08
- BC era wars and rumors of wars. It's like yeah, everyone's always fighting each other there's wars and skirmishes big wars and all throughout history, but why is it unique or Interesting that Jesus says you're gonna hear wars and rumors of wars.
- 12:20
- It's like Wait, really? This is the Pax Romana. The piece of Rome is enforced, right?
- 12:27
- You know, no one's allowed to fight And this is the Pax Romana Jesus. What do you mean?
- 12:33
- There's me wars and rumors of wars It would have been interesting to them because Jesus says it's a sign You'll know
- 12:39
- The sign is that you'll these are the things that are gonna happen earth bangs before the end and he says there's gonna be wars and Rumors of wars it'll be like what for real and the
- 12:47
- Pax Romana like seriously and then all of a sudden you read you read that's a history of the first century and you realize all of a sudden like During that generation after Jesus ascension that generation.
- 12:59
- It's just like everybody's fighting her Everybody is so much turmoil and like Rome is like falling apart at one point
- 13:05
- So like Rome comes to like sack the city of Jerusalem and surround the city like Jesus said it would and then they turn around and go back because Rome is falling apart and That's when the
- 13:15
- Christians escape because they were given the word by Jesus to escape then but wars and rumors of wars It was like everybody was fighting with everybody that happened in that generation
- 13:22
- And so Jesus says see to it that you are not alarmed for this must take place But the end is not yet for nation will rise against nation and kingdom against kingdom and there will be famines and earthquakes in various places
- 13:33
- Huge issue in the first century in that generation specifically in that area, of course the issue of earthquakes
- 13:39
- Yep, one of the largest earthquakes in recorded history was in Pompeii in 62 ad and earthquakes
- 13:49
- Were a big problem, but even famine famine was a huge issue issue
- 13:54
- Especially during the war between the Romans and the Jews you've got recordings in Josephus Telling you the history because he was there.
- 14:02
- He was a General in the in the Jewish army against the Romans he records people were eating dung to survive and He even has a record of one woman who boiled her own child and was offering it to people as they walk by to eat
- 14:17
- So when Jesus says you're gonna hear of wars and rumors of wars did it take place in that generation? Absolutely He says then they will deliver you up to tribulation and put you to death and you'll be hated by all nations for my name's
- 14:29
- Sake did that happen to the Christians in the first century? Oh, how about the book of Acts? It's gracious.
- 14:34
- It's an axe Yeah, it's all throughout the New Testament. We know that all of the Apostles all died martyrs deaths
- 14:42
- Except for John the Apostle, but it wasn't for lack of trying Emperor Nero according to tradition in history
- 14:48
- Captured John the Apostle he's trying to wipe out the leadership of the Christian Church Captures John according to the tradition tradition boils him in oil and John doesn't die
- 14:57
- I think Jesus prophesied that by the way at the end of John that he would be alive when Christ came back in judgment
- 15:04
- But I can have the discussion later, but Nero is so superstitious He's so fearful of John that he sends
- 15:11
- John into Patmos and to exile and and it's interesting I think that's where John wrote the book of Revelation while in exile in Patmos But make no mistake about it.
- 15:20
- The early Christian Church was really really really really suffering the first great persecution That was the first one.
- 15:27
- The first great persecution was between the Jews and the Christians. They were basically the initial mob
- 15:32
- Yeah, just like with Jesus crucifying crucifying they were stirring up and threatening, you know upheaval
- 15:38
- Yeah, if you don't give us what we want if you don't give us these Christians if you don't give us their Messiah Yeah, we're gonna riot
- 15:43
- Yeah, and take and taking even oaths to make sure they don't eat food until Paul is dead like you see them at Nax They're trying to kill
- 15:49
- Paul and the Apostles Throwing him in jail and beating him and flogging them and all that stuff So you see at first in a
- 15:56
- New Testament you see like the the the covenant -breaking Jews are persecuting the Christians Jesus said that was gonna happen.
- 16:02
- You're gonna be persecuted. You're gonna be hated They're gonna deliver you to synagogues all that stuff but then it's the story switches in the 60s it flips and now
- 16:12
- The the the focus from Rome now is like get the Christians So the
- 16:17
- Christians now have it coming from both sides the Jews and the Romans when you get into the 60s Which by the way, it is interesting.
- 16:24
- That's exactly what the book of Revelation shows Jewish person Jewish persecution and persecution from the beast
- 16:29
- Yeah, the Romans and you see that as the course of history. Okay, be that as I'm going fast guys I'm going as fast as I can.
- 16:35
- Yeah, and then it says walk. It's a brisk walk. Yeah, it says, um You're gonna be hated by it for my name's sake and Then many will fall away and betray one another and hate one another you see that apostasy even in the
- 16:46
- New Testament itself and many False prophets will arise and lead many astray again You see that in the New Testament itself You can talk about it outside the
- 16:52
- New Testament and because lawlessness will be increased the love of many will grow cold but the one who endures to the end will be saved and this gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole world as a testimony to all nations and then the end will come people go ah
- 17:06
- There you go in it and there is why this could not possibly be talking about the first century
- 17:14
- And my answer is well, if you believe the Bible then you'd have to believe that that did happen And you might be saying but wait a minute like Fiji Australia New Zealand Like Hawaiian Islands No No this is a manner of speaking the whole world was the known world at the time the entire
- 17:37
- Roman Empire and look I believe the Bible and I know you do too. If you're a
- 17:42
- Christian, I believe the Bible and so I believe things like Romans chapter 1
- 17:48
- Where and you got the other one for me. I believe it's Colossians. Yeah, it is every creature under heaven Yeah, Romans chapter 1 the
- 17:54
- Apostle Paul first century says this he says He says in verse chapter 1 verse 8 book of Romans he says first I thank my
- 18:04
- God through Jesus Christ for all of you because your faith is proclaimed in all the world
- 18:11
- That's the inspired Apostle Romans 1 Using the language that they understood that gospel had gone everywhere over the known world and your faith is being proclaimed throughout the entire world
- 18:22
- Jesus said that the gospel would be reclaimed through the whole world as testimony to all nations and then the end will come
- 18:30
- Colossians chapter 1 speaking about the ministry of Jesus He is now Reconciled in his body of flesh by his death in order to present you holy and blameless and above reproach before him
- 18:38
- If indeed you continue in the faith stable and steadfast not shifting from the hope of the gospel that you heard
- 18:44
- Which has been proclaimed in all creation under heaven and of which I Paul Became a minister so I believe that I Believe that I think you should too.
- 18:56
- I when that when the inspired writings say Every creature under heaven the whole world if that's how
- 19:04
- God Described the known world at the time and where the edges were and where this was to go Then I want to listen to God himself
- 19:11
- And if he says it was done then it was done and so when someone says well that couldn't have taken place as it didn't Go to Fiji yet. That's not the language.
- 19:16
- Yeah, that's not what it meant But did that happen according to the writer of scriptures writers of scripture it did so when you see the abomination of desolation
- 19:25
- Spoken of by the Prophet Daniel standing in the holy place. Let the reader understand then let those who are in Judea Flee to the mountains, but wait a minute.
- 19:34
- What about me global today? Las Vegas, wait, what's the business about Judea?
- 19:41
- What if I'm in LA you see the point? This is local This is not a global Judgment Around the whole world.
- 19:49
- This is not the second coming. This is not the final resurrection. This is so local. Are you ready?
- 19:55
- you can escape it on foot and They did they did. Yeah, they did because they saw what
- 20:01
- Luke refers to the same passage when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies Yeah, Jesus is telling them you can escape this judgment by fleeing on foot
- 20:11
- Really? So this is supposed to be the second coming of Christ the whole world judgment over the entire world and Jesus is telling people they
- 20:19
- Can escape it on foot But Jesus says here the abomination of desolation now again
- 20:25
- I did a year and a half on this so I can't have a whole discourse here and go to Daniel All I will say is that if you read
- 20:31
- Luke's account It's it's a synoptic gospel issue And if you read Luke's account of Luke 21 when
- 20:37
- Luke says this part, he says not abomination that causes desolation He actually says when you see
- 20:42
- Jerusalem surrounded by armies flee So I think that's the best way to go in terms of the summary of what
- 20:48
- Jesus is getting there about Daniel is when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies flee now, I want to point something out
- 20:55
- It says here in verse 16 Then let those who were in Judea flee to the mountains let the one who is on his house to on the housetop not go
- 21:03
- Down to take what is in his house and let not the one who is in his field not let the one who? Who is in the field not turn back to take his cloak and alas for the women who are pregnant and For those who are nursing infants in those days pray that your flight may not be in winter or on the
- 21:17
- Sabbath For then I'll stop there. So the the warning there is to flee don't go back.
- 21:23
- Don't grab things get out of the city Flee Judea to the mountains now guess what happened as a matter of historic record
- 21:31
- The Roman armies came in they surround the city The testimony of that day was that the
- 21:39
- Jews actually were mocking the Romans like literally trying to laugh at them Because they thought that they couldn't accomplish what they wanted all of a sudden weirdly the
- 21:49
- Roman armies flip and they go back they head back towards Rome because they got word that Rome was essentially falling apart and They leave now watch what happened as a matter of record as soon as the
- 22:01
- Roman armies turn around and left They had just surrounded the city the Christians who were left in Jerusalem Fled to a town called
- 22:08
- Pella. They listened to this prophecy of Jesus They knew it and they actually obeyed it
- 22:15
- They were surrounded by armies the armies left the Christians said don't get your coat everybody.
- 22:21
- Follow me. Let's get out of here That's what happened the Christians. They bounced the Christians escaped and then guess what happened the
- 22:26
- Roman armies went Flipped back around they came they re -sacked the city and then there was a three and a half year war of the
- 22:33
- Romans versus the Jews and they got slaughtered So did that happen? The Christians thought that that was to them
- 22:40
- Eusebius the church historian records that they obeyed that They were reading this all of a discourse.
- 22:46
- They obeyed it and they actually escaped the judgment on Jerusalem What culminated in the destruction of the temple?
- 22:52
- Yeah and then verse 21 says for then there'll be great tribulation such as not been from the beginning of the world until now No one never will be and people say ah
- 22:59
- We've seen some crazy wars since then guys read your Bibles brothers and sisters and recognize that this is the kind of Dramatic prophetic hyperbole that is used in the
- 23:10
- Old Testament about other things that happened This is Jesus speaking like a
- 23:15
- Jewish prophet Dramatic prophetic hyperbole is throughout the entire Bible and this language has been used before and so it says here in verse 23 then if anyone says to you look here is the
- 23:29
- Christ or there he is do not believe it for false Christ and false Prophets will arise and perform great signs and wonders to so as to lead astray
- 23:35
- Eve if possible even the elect See I've told you beforehand So if they say to you look he's in the wilderness do not go out if they say look he's in the inner rooms do not
- 23:44
- Believe it for as the lightning comes from the east and shines as far as the West So will be the coming of the
- 23:50
- Son of Man wherever the corpse is There the vultures will gather now There's some great studies in terms of the the language being used here that I think is fantastic and we did some stuff on this
- 24:01
- As well. I think it's interesting in terms of the judgment language that God uses that often fire blood
- 24:09
- Smoke pillars of smoke God uses things like lightning flashes. This is judgment talk
- 24:15
- In other words, Jesus isn't novel here. He's a Jewish prophet sent from God. He has got himself in the flesh
- 24:21
- He's speaking like the Jewish prophets like Ezekiel like Isaiah like Jeremiah. This is language. They all use this dramatic prophetic hyperbole
- 24:28
- I do think it's interesting that it's like the lightning flashes from the east to the west That that direction is the direction that Rome came and I do think there's some interesting studies in terms of the language here
- 24:38
- Where it says the some English translations say vultures some say Eagles, you know in any the
- 24:45
- Roman armies use the end sign the sign of the the eagle and I think it's it's interesting that The language there it could could even demonstrate eagle on the corpse of Jerusalem not not just that but this just struck me to Jesus taking up the mantle of a
- 24:58
- Jewish prophet but all of this just reeks of How Yahweh disciplined his people in the
- 25:04
- Old Testament, right? How did he do it? He used foreign armies Yeah to bring destruction.
- 25:10
- Oh exactly and judgment Isaiah 10. Yeah a Syria Who's hit by the rod of my anger and who's yeah that uses a
- 25:16
- Syria a pagan army Pagan nations are a are a utensil in the hand of God.
- 25:22
- Yeah to discipline his people That's a very good point because you do have that God declaring that he's using the pagan nation as his army to punish his people and that's precisely how
- 25:31
- Jesus talks about the parable of the Wedding feasts is that the King sends his armies to burn their city his arm his army
- 25:37
- Okay, so keep we're going faster guys I'm doing my best to get through this as quickly as possible, but also give you all something to work with But again quick, let's let's do it.
- 25:46
- Let's let's go back for a second. What's the context? Jerusalem first century
- 25:52
- Jewish leadership. Woe to you. Woe to you. Your house has left you desolate This is the temple being destroyed and then
- 25:59
- Jesus says look for these things. Did all these things happen in the first century? Absolutely, they did Jesus in verse 29 then goes on to say here's what people get tripped up.
- 26:07
- Let's admit it right now This is where everybody gets tripped up and says well, wait a minute. How could that have happened in the first century? Well Immediately after the tribulation of those days the
- 26:15
- Sun will be darkened and the moon will not give its light and the stars will fall From heaven you get
- 26:21
- Isaiah 13. Mm -hmm. The stars will fall from heaven and the powers of the heavens will be shaken Now people go.
- 26:28
- Okay, wait Wait the stars falling from heaven that happened in the first century and I'm gonna say
- 26:35
- Yeah, exactly like God used to say because in Isaiah 13 God uses that precise language
- 26:42
- Of turning their world upside down. Yeah cosmic deconstruction language talk about I'm gonna turn your lights out
- 26:48
- I'm gonna destroy your world. He uses that about Babylon in Egypt. Can you read that for me?
- 26:54
- so Isaiah 13 beginning in verse 6 whale for the day of the Lord is near also significant as Destruction from the
- 27:00
- Almighty it will come therefore all hands will be feeble and every human heart will melt They will be dismayed pangs and agony will seize them.
- 27:08
- They will be in anguish like a woman in labor Same language. Yeah, they will look aghast at one another their faces will be a flame behold the day of the
- 27:17
- Lord comes cruel with wrath and fierce anger to make the land a Desolation and to destroy its sinners from it for the stars of the heavens and their constellations will not give their light
- 27:28
- The Sun will be dark at its rising and the moon will not shed its light so dramatic prophetic hyperbole that God has used often to describe his judgment upon Pagan nations or even a faithless nation of Israel.
- 27:44
- And so my here's my point and Isaiah 13 That's a historic judgment that happened before The first century and God used that language to describe his judgment upon a pagan nation
- 27:55
- Do you know what's amazing about this section is now Jesus is taking Isaiah's language Which is about pagans and God destroying their world and now it's flipped and it's on the covenant breaking
- 28:05
- Jewish people now He's using the language about pagan nations being destroyed and it's in reference to the covenant breaking
- 28:11
- Jews of his day being destroyed Same language same taking your lights out same turning the world upside down same same
- 28:18
- Tossing the world on your head kind of language. We use that all the time in terms of like trash talk, right? Like I'm gonna drop
- 28:23
- I'm gonna drop the world on your head. Yeah, and knock your lights. Someone goes Wait, like literally how you gonna lift it kind of like no we get what we're saying
- 28:33
- And here's the thing look like it or not God uses that language a lot and it's not literal It's meant to get across a point of I'm gonna destroy your world and in this place
- 28:42
- There's cosmic deconstruction language used that God had already used before and it didn't literally happen
- 28:49
- But they were literally destroyed in Isaiah 13 and Isaiah 33 I believe it and there's another great one in Joel 2 around the
- 28:58
- Joel 2 talking about the outpouring of the Spirit Right around that same thing you have this got this language of God shaking right the earth quakes before them the heavens tremble
- 29:07
- The Sun and the moon are darkened and the stars withdraw their shining. Yeah, same kind of idea going on there
- 29:14
- Yeah, and so then so did that happen? And my answer is yeah in the same way it happened in Isaiah 13
- 29:19
- It was a real historical judgment. They really were destroyed exactly as God said and that's the language of the prophets speak in So then it says then will appear
- 29:29
- The sign of the Son of Man in heaven and all the tribes of the earth will mourn and they will see the
- 29:34
- Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory and people look at that and they go. Oh How could that be first century fulfillment?
- 29:42
- My answer is when Jesus is quoting Daniel chapter 7 verses 13 through 14. We should pay attention
- 29:49
- This is all covenantal. It's all expectation the sign of the Son of Man in heaven We could do a whole
- 29:55
- I've done sermons on this They were to see in the destruction of Jerusalem The clear testimony the fact that Jesus truly was seated on his throne that the
- 30:07
- Messiah had come He was on his throne and Jesus is using the language here coming on the clouds of heaven
- 30:13
- Two points to make one read Isaiah 19 1 it says Yahweh comes on a swift cloud and judgment
- 30:20
- He comes riding on a cloud that's judgment language but at the same time at the same time in Daniel 7 13 through 14 clearly the
- 30:28
- Son of Man comes up to the ancient of days and It's coming on the clouds of heaven And what's the what's what is this?
- 30:34
- Meant to encompass in terms of the kingdom of the Messiah that he comes to get all the tribes tongues peoples nations languages
- 30:40
- Yeah, he comes to get the world and then it says that here It says he will send out his angels
- 30:48
- Angelos his messengers. Yeah We should Look at the language his messengers
- 30:55
- With a loud trumpet call and they will gather his elect from the four winds and from one end of heaven to the other
- 31:00
- That's Daniel 7 go get the nation's all the nation's tribes tongues people languages coming to Jesus the
- 31:06
- Son of Man on the clouds of Heaven Jesus is quoting Daniel chapter 7 to them. And did you have he quotes that also in his trial?
- 31:15
- Oh, he does not is what causes the high priest to tear their clothes And to condemn him because he's saying that he's the son of man of Daniel 7 and but what did he say?
- 31:23
- This is really important in terms of timing. He says you yeah, you will see the Son of Man So who did he say that to people in some far off generation?
- 31:31
- He said you will see so did Jesus believe that they were gonna see that in their generation well, he told the high priest that he would see it and so Jesus apparently believed they were gonna understand it see it and final words here
- 31:44
- We can do more here But verse 32 from the fig tree learn its lesson as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts out its leaves
- 31:49
- You know that summer is near. So also when you see all these things, you know that he is near at the very gates
- 31:56
- Quick question. Let's let's be faithful with our Bible interpretation. Who's Jesus talking to?
- 32:02
- you Jesus is talking to his disciples people standing in front of him that generation
- 32:08
- He says so also when you see all these things, you know that he is near at the very gates truly
- 32:15
- I say to you this generation will not pass away until all these things take place
- 32:24
- Whatever you think about what I just said and that we could do more a very humbly We could do some really exciting things more in terms of verse by verse going to historical resources demonstrating stuff
- 32:35
- We could do specifics about who the false Messiah was Persecution of Christians all that stuff we could do all that stuff
- 32:41
- Whatever you believe in what I just said You have to contend and I have to contend with verse 33 and 3rd verse 34 and In verse 34 at the end of all of this
- 32:52
- Jesus tells them when you see you see you see he says truly verily
- 32:58
- Amen, I Say to you This generation will not pass away until all
- 33:05
- These things take place what's in the all these things stars falling from heaven Son of man coming on the clouds persecutions wars rumors and wars famines pestilence all that stuff all these things
- 33:18
- Will take place in this generation near demonstrative Not that generation who sees it the generation that he is talking to him besides What was the whole context of Matthew 20 through 24 already?
- 33:29
- We're not even fully through 24 yet There's actually more interesting things here. The whole context is very Jewish temple destruction
- 33:37
- Jewish leadership abomination of desolation. All of that is very Jewish. And by the way again, I'll point out it is a localized judgment
- 33:45
- That you can escape on foot flee Flee from where if you're in Judea flee to the mountains you'll get away from this and the early
- 33:54
- Christians did so is this global? Judgment, is this for the entire world or is this a target over the covenant breaking
- 34:00
- Jews? Oh exactly as the Old Testament prophesied the Messiah's coming comes with atonement forgiveness and judgment upon the covenant breakers so is is
- 34:11
- Hamas and Israel today Does it have anything to do with the Great Tribulation described by Jesus and the
- 34:17
- Olivet Discourse? My answer is exegetically not a thing Not a thing.
- 34:25
- Is there a way to relate scripture to the conflict in Hamas with Hamas and Israel today in Hezbollah? Is there way to principles and as their application?
- 34:32
- Sure. Yeah throughout the Bible. We have lots to say We need the gospel to go to everybody. How about nations that reject
- 34:38
- Yahweh is their God? Yeah Yeah about that one. Yeah But is is the
- 34:44
- Olivet Discourse does have anything to do with my our current circumstances or is it future to us?
- 34:49
- No, because I believe Jesus is a true prophet and I believe that he meant it for that generation It was fulfilled in that generation.
- 34:55
- Jesus is the Messiah that passage vindicates Christ as the Messiah We should not be taking something that actually
- 35:01
- Demonstrates Jesus is the Messiah taking it away from the church and now throwing it into the hands of the atheists to use as fodder against us or Putting it in our future when it has nothing to do with our future.
- 35:12
- It's it's it's nothing to do with us There's more things in the Bible that have to do with our future You want some
- 35:18
- Isaiah 9 6 through 7 Daniel 7 13 through 14 is active and going on now Isaiah 42
- 35:24
- Isaiah chapter 2 There's so much Psalm 110 1 Psalm 72
- 35:29
- Psalm 22 Psalm 2 there's so much that is we still have currently happening now not finished yet That's future to us.
- 35:38
- But is the Great Tribulation anything to do with me today or Israel today and Hamas today?
- 35:43
- Not a thing Not a thing not if we want to interpret the Bible faithfully
- 35:49
- And so I hope it was a blessing. Yeah, I hope so too. It was certainly a Honor to and just a delight to go through Long show today, was it a blessing everybody was a long show wanted to be a good resource.
- 36:01
- Yeah buckle up Yeah, here's what I know. Here's what I know friends. I know With full certainty.
- 36:07
- I know that there are so many of you right now going but what about all right? I see that but what about this verse?
- 36:14
- What about that verse? What about this verse? We can only do so much. We probably were on how long we're on today.
- 36:20
- I have no idea. I don't even know My point today was not to answer every ask a question about eschatology or every proof text someone brings to bear on this
- 36:29
- My point today was to faithfully walk through Matthew just Matthew Again, it's synoptic gospel issue mark 13
- 36:37
- Luke 21 Matthew 24 Okay, so you can do all those two But my point today was to walk through exegetically
- 36:43
- Matthew just four chapters and say does this have anything to do with Israel today? Or my life today
- 36:50
- No It's not it's not current to me. It's not my future It's something that Jesus said was gonna happen and it was fulfilled because he's a perfect prophetic witness
- 36:58
- Amen, and there's more questions that could be answered and we're just not able to do it today because I need to go home
