- If the entire universe and all of its laws came into existence by the Word of God, then we continue to be governed by that very
- 00:09
- Word to this day. And everyone knows this, believers and unbelievers both, when we understand the text.
- 00:16
- This is When We Understand The Text, a 5 -minute Bible commentary to help encourage your time in the Word. Here's your teacher,
- 00:22
- Pastor Gabe. Thank you Becky. Last week we looked at Romans 8 verses 18 -32 and talked about 5 evidences that everyone understands about God, whether they claim to believe in God or not.
- 00:34
- Number one, God's wrath is evident. That's verse 18. For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men.
- 00:46
- We can tell that there are consequences for behavior. And when you break one of God's laws, there are consequences for that.
- 00:54
- Galatians 6 -7 says, God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap.
- 01:02
- And we can observe that in the world around us. We know, as it says in Romans 8, that God has subjected all things to futility because of our sin.
- 01:13
- That is the wrath of God and it is evident to every person. Number two, God's eternal power and divine nature are evident, as we read in verse 20, for his invisible attributes, namely his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived ever since the creation of the world and the things that have been made.
- 01:31
- So man is without excuse. Now oftentimes that verse is used to talk about how
- 01:37
- God's existence is evident in all that has been made. But it's more than that. It's his eternal power and his divine nature, these invisible attributes of God, are evident to every person.
- 01:49
- When we observe the created world. Number three, what is natural and what is unnatural is evident.
- 01:57
- We read this in verse 26, that because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie,
- 02:03
- God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature.
- 02:12
- And the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another.
- 02:18
- Men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error.
- 02:24
- It's not rocket science to look at a man and look at a woman and know we can tell by observing them that the two of them are anatomically designed for a sexual relationship with one another.
- 02:37
- But there are those who have exchanged the truth for a lie. And so God gave them up to a debased mind and they burned with passion for that which is unnatural.
- 02:48
- Men burning with passion for other men and women burning with passion for other women.
- 02:54
- But we can observe in what God has created and know what is natural and what is unnatural and that is evident in all that has been designed.
- 03:04
- Number four, the wages of sin is evident. We read this in verse 32, though they know
- 03:09
- God's righteous decree that those who practice such things deserve to die.
- 03:15
- We know because God created all things by his word that all things continue to be governed by that word.
- 03:21
- And if we break one of the laws that has been established by the word of God, we inherently understand that we deserve to be destroyed because we violated a law established by the holy righteous creator of the universe.
- 03:37
- We'll read later on in Romans 3 23 that the wages of sin is death.
- 03:43
- And this is evident. We can observe this and all that has been created. Number five, we didn't get into this last week, but it's what we're going to be talking about this week, that the word of God is true, is evident again, verse 32, though they know
- 03:59
- God's righteous decree that those who practice such things deserve to die. They not only do them, but give approval to those who practice them.
- 04:08
- And in the chapter two, therefore, you have no excuse, O man, every one of you who judges for in passing judgment on another, you condemn yourself because you, the judge, practice the same things.
- 04:21
- Verse two, we know that the judgment of God rightly falls on those who practice such things.
- 04:29
- We know that the word of God is true and continues to govern us even to this day.
- 04:35
- And we'll talk about this more as we continue on with our study of Romans chapter two this week.
