Hey guys, Collin here, and welcome back to the channel where we bring you Christian commentary about the things that matter.
00:06
As ever, please know this video isn't a sinful attack, but rather a Biblical critique. In today's video, we're going to be talking about Ryan Rufus, who is an internationally recognized pastor.
00:16
His video on how to speak in tongues has been viewed over 380 ,000 times at the time of recording.
00:23
He and his wife Kylie run a teaching ministry called New Nature Ministries. They put a tremendous emphasis on the grace of Jesus Christ, but sometimes they take it much too far.
00:34
In the following clip, you will see that Ryan's view of sin in the Christian life is nowhere near the
00:40
Biblical one. Watch this. If you sin as a New Covenant believer, if you to then go and ask
00:48
God to forgive you of that sin is a sin. It's the sin of unbelief, the sin of unbelief in the finished work of Jesus.
00:57
Even before you've sinned, God has already forgiven you of that sin. I'm telling you now, that is the
01:05
Bible. That is the Gospel. And for too long, the church has been preaching an
01:12
Old Testament version of the Gospel. So the claim here from Ryan Rufus is fairly simple.
01:18
He says that if you are saved as a Christian and then you sin, and you ask for forgiveness, you are actually sinning when you do that.
01:25
Why? Well, because Christ has ultimately already forgiven you for all of your sins, past, present, and future.
01:32
Therefore, to ask for forgiveness in any way is the same as lacking belief in the finished work of Jesus and reverting back to the
01:40
Old Testament covenant, which has been replaced. This is the message of internationally recognized pastor
01:45
Ryan Rufus. And first, let's recognize what he gets correct here, albeit it's still wrong ultimately.
01:52
He is absolutely correct that God's salvation is ultimate. If there is a sin that is attributed to you, one which
01:58
Christ's sacrifice does not cleanse you from or atone for, then you are still viewed as a sinner, and therefore you are not going to go to heaven.
02:06
You will not spend eternity with God. Therefore, Christ's sacrifice must be ultimate.
02:11
In other words, it must cover all of your sins for all of your life. Second Corinthians chapter 5 talks about this.
02:18
Verse 19, it says, quote, In Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, end quote.
02:26
Thus, we can see that the reconciliation of the world to God is done through not counting their trespasses to them any longer.
02:34
This is what we mean when we say that we are justified. But the passage continues in verse 21 saying, quote,
02:40
For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
02:48
You see, as a result of this and many other passages, we can see that not only are our sins not attributed to us, but through Christ and the undeserved grace of the gospel accepted in faith, we have the righteousness of Christ's perfect life attributed to us instead.
03:03
This is a wonderful and glorious reality that should give us tremendous hope as Christians.
03:09
And Romans 6 23 makes this point even more clear when it says, quote, For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our
03:18
Lord. In this passage, the wages of sin are contrasted with eternal life.
03:24
In other words, if you live eternally with Christ, that must mean that the wages of your sins, every single one of them were justly paid for and accepted by Jesus Christ in your stead.
03:35
In summary, Ryan Rufus is absolutely correct when he talks about ultimate, complete, and utter salvation through faith in Christ.
03:43
Anything else would be a contradiction of God's holy standards and his gracious gospel. But now we must talk about what
03:50
Ryan gets wrong, and boy does he get it wrong. In many ways, what he gets wrong is confusing and twisting even the part he got right.
03:57
He asserts that because of God's grace, you no longer need to repent of any sin in your life as a
04:03
Christian. And this is quite simply unbiblical. It is clear that believers can sin. Paul was saved long before he wrote the book of Romans.
04:11
For example, he had been serving the Lord diligently for years after his dramatic conversion. Yet he writes in Romans 7 19 through 20, the following statement, quote,
04:20
For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing.
04:26
Now, if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but the sin that dwells within me, end quote.
04:33
Paul has been ultimately forgiven at this point, yet he still says that he struggles against his sin, even as a saved believer.
04:40
The question then becomes, what should a Christian do when they sin after being saved? Well, according to Ryan Rufus, you should certainly not repent of it.
04:48
Whatever you do, don't repent. You should keep moving forward as if it never happened, because anything short of that would be denying
04:55
Christ's life. If you ask for forgiveness, you're reverting back to the Old Testament.
05:01
But this is not what the Bible tells us to do in this situation. The best evidence for that is in the book of First John.
05:07
In First John 1 8 through 9, John writes this, quote, If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
05:15
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
05:21
Notice that John says we in the That word is obviously and clearly not referring to unbelievers, but to saved people in the
05:29
Church, including John himself. Moreover, Revelation 2 5 corrects the Church of Ephesus, saying this, quote,
05:36
Remember therefore from where you have fallen, repent, and do the works you did at first.
05:42
Again, this is being told to the Church. The proper response to sin in the Christian life is to confess it to the
05:48
Lord and repent of it immediately. This is the complete opposite, though, of what Ryan Rufus is telling you to do.
05:55
His overemphasis on grace utterly contradicts the command of God given through John in this passage, and many other scriptures.
06:03
You see, Ryan says that repenting of sin is something that denies the sacrifice of Jesus. But the
06:08
Bible says that repenting of sin is something that characterizes people who believe in the sacrifice of Jesus.
06:14
And more than this, if you recall, Ryan went so far as to say that repentance itself, after being saved, is sinful.
06:21
And that is very, very dangerous. Isaiah 5 20 says this, quote, Woe to those who call evil good and good evil.
06:29
And this is precisely what Ryan Rufus does here, as well as many other modern evangelicals who agree with him.
06:34
The Bible says that repentance of sin is good and right. But Ryan and teachers like him say that repentance is bad and wrong.
06:42
In their search for grace, they have so often forsaken truth. In the end, this kind of worldview threatens to sacrifice both grace and truth on the altar of human preference and opinion.
06:53
Far too many global megachurch movements are doing pragmatic evangelism that appeals more to human desires than to biblical truth.
07:01
This has been happening for many years now, and we must recognize it for what it is, dangerous false teaching.
07:07
So stay away from pastors and teachers who preach like this, and follow instead what the Bible says about repentance.
07:14
I pray that this has been a blessing to you, and please know this, I do not offer any of this correction from a high and mighty position.
07:21
I am nothing but a wretched sinner saved by the grace of Jesus Christ. So let's pray for Ryan Rufus and for teachers like him that they would stop this false teaching by God's grace and turn to the truth of God's Word.
