Word of God. So what do you do if you attend a charismatic or Pentecostal church and you're not speaking in tongues?

Gasp. I would note that the Scripture nowhere says that that is a universal gift given to people.

But here's the thing. In that particular church, they see that as one of the signs that you've had the baptism of the

Holy Spirit, which the Scripture doesn't teach. There is no such thing as the baptism of the Holy Spirit.

Ephesians 4 is clear. One Lord, one faith, one baptism. The baptism that is referred to there is water baptism.

And in Acts chapter 2, Peter makes it clear. So everybody who is baptized, they can say, hey,

I have the Holy Spirit. Everybody who believes in Christ for the forgiveness of their sins, they've been brought to repentance.

They also have the Holy Spirit. The idea here is that Christians have the

Holy Spirit. There isn't some second baptism that then results in people speaking in tongues.

That's not how this works. But here's the thing. In these churches, they'll say, well, you need to speak in tongues because you need to have your prayer language because tongues is an important prayer language for you.

No Scripture teaches that. We'll take a look at 1 Corinthians 14 in this episode just to point out what does 1

Corinthians 14 really say. And we're going to note then, what do you do when you as a

Pentecostal don't have the ability to speak in tongues because you're honest, right?

If God's going to give it to you, he's going to give it to you and you're not going to push the matter. Well, I'm going to note, we're going to be listening to Kathy DeGraw and one of her guests.

We'll take a look at his name here when we pull up the video. They're going to be talking about, well, you have the

Holy Spirit because you're a Christian, but you don't have your prayer language yet. What should you do? We're going to listen to their advice, which

I would note is kind of standard fare in the Pentecostal and charismatic movements.

When I was in the latter rain movement back in the late 80s, I was told similar things.

This is not biblical. In fact, this is just nonsense is the best way I can put it. Let's do this.

So, you've got Jesus, you have the Holy Spirit in you, you're a son, you're a daughter of the King. True.

You can, in time, have your spiritual prayer language. So, if you're kind of...

What scripture says you can have your, quote, spiritual prayer language? Stuck.

You're like, I've been water baptized, I've gone all these steps. Don't beat yourself up. Yes, come on, come on.

Worship Jesus, talk to Holy Spirit, worship him, and just surrender and ask. Just surrender.

He's a good father. He'll give you what you ask for. If your heart's desire is to have that prayer language, he will give it to you.

So, ask and receive. And don't get caught up in the formulas or the methods or any of that.

Just worship Jesus. You can even just, as you ask, say, Jesus, here I am, will you give me my prayer language?

I'm water baptized. Where in scripture does it say that we are to universally receive a prayer language from Christ?

It doesn't. Let's take a look at the biblical texts here, and we'll work this out.

First Corinthians chapter 12, we'll take a look at 12 as well as 14. Concerning spiritual gifts, brothers,

I do not want you to be uninformed. I would say here we have a passage that talks about spiritual gifts, right?

You know that when you were pagans, you were led astray to mute idols, however you were led. Therefore, I want you to understand that no one speaking in the spirit of God ever says

Jesus is accursed, and no one can say Jesus is Lord except in the Holy Spirit. Now, there are varieties of gifts.

Watch this argument. There are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are varieties of service, but the same

Lord. And there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone.

To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.

For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same

Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one

Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues.

All of these are empowered by one and the same Spirit who apportions to each one individually as he wills.

Now, let me ask you this question. Based on what we've read so far, is there any expectation here that Scripture teaches that we should all be receiving a universal gift of tongues and a universal prayer language based on tongues?

No. Note, this is all talking about variety. And if that's not enough,

Paul goes on then to use an analogy. For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many are one body, so it is with Christ.

For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body. Jews or Greeks, slaves or free, all were made to drink of the one

Spirit. For the body does not consist of one member, but many. If the foot should say, well, because I'm not a hand,

I do not belong to the body, that would not make it any less a part of the body. And if the ear should say, well, because I'm not an eye,

I do not belong to the body, well, that would not make it any less a part of the body.

If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would be the sense of smell?

But as it is, God has arranged the members in the body, each one of them, as He chose.

So you'll note that God chooses who receives differing varieties of different gifts for the purpose of filling out all the functions that a body needs to operate.

So if everybody was a nose, we'd never be able to see anything.

We would smell pretty well. Our sense of smell would be great, but we'd never be able to walk anywhere.

We wouldn't be able to pick anything up. No, the body is not made up of one member. The body is made up of many different members, and you'll note that tongues was listed as a variety, a gift that's part of a variety of gifts, right?

If all were a single member, where would the body be? As it is, there are many parts, yet one body. The eye cannot say to the hand, well,

I have no need of you, nor again, the head to the feet, I have no need of you.

On the contrary, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, and on those parts of the body that we think less honorable, we bestow the greater honor, and our unpresentable parts, well, they're treated with greater modesty, which our more presentable parts do not require.

But God has so composed the body, giving greater honor to the part that lacked it, that there may be no division in the body, but that the members may have the same care for one another.

If one member suffers, all suffer together. If one member is honored, all rejoice together.

Now you are the body of Christ. Note, varieties of gifts, right?

And individually, you're members of it, and God has appointed in the church, so here's the different gifts, right?

First apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, helping, administrating, and various kinds of tongues.

And then he asked this question, a series of questions, are all apostles? And the answer to these questions is no.

So in Greek, I always like to point this out, this word right here, may, is to be understood when it's asked in a question, that the question being asked has to be, it is required that it be answered in the negative.

So, me pontes apostoloi, are all apostles? No. Me pontes prophetai, are all prophets?

No. Me pontes didoskoloi, are all teachers? No. Me pontes dunamis, do all work miracles?

Do all have power working miracles, right? The answer is no. Me pontes charismata exouson iamaton, do all possess gifts of healing?

No. Me pontes glosais glaluson, do all speak in tongues?

No. They do not. So, there is no universal gift.

There is no universal gift of tongues, which then results in everybody receiving their prayer language.

That's just nonsense. 1 Corinthians 12 rules that whole thing out very, very strongly, right?

Do all speak with tongues? No. Do all interpret? No. But earnestly desire the higher gifts, and I will show you still a more excellent way.

This is where Paul then goes on a discourse into 1 Corinthians 13, which is part of the love passage.

If I speak in the tongues of men and angels and I do not have love, I'm a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.

And if I have prophetic powers and understand all mysteries and knowledge and if I have all faith so as to remove mountains, but I have not love,

I'm nothing. If I give away all that I have and deliver up my body to be burned, but I do not have love,

I do not gain anything. I gain nothing. Love is patient. Love is kind.

It doesn't envy or boast. It's not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way. It is not irritable or resentful.

It does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will pass away. As for tongues, they will cease. As for knowledge, it will pass away.

For we know in part and we prophesy in part, but when the perfect comes, the partial will pass away. Now note,

I'm not going to exegete this portion. This is a highly contested portion of Scripture. I'm not going to weigh in on the exegesis on this.

I would recommend the book, The Signs of the Apostles. That would be a good book for you to read on this.

When I was a child, I spoke like a child. I thought like a child. I reasoned like a child, but when I became a man,

I gave up childish ways. For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then we will see face to face.

Now I know in part, then I shall be known fully, even as I have been fully known. So now faith, hope, and love abide.

These three, but the greatest of these is love. Chapter 14. Pursue love.

Pursue love. And desire the spiritual gifts, for sure. Especially that you may prophesy.

And I would note that because Peter, in fact let me show you this. I'm going to look for a word, oracles.

And if I were to go to 1 Peter chapter 4. 1 Peter 4, specifically verse 11.

So watch what Peter says here in 1 Peter. The end of all things is at hand. Therefore be self -controlled, be sober -minded for the sake of your prayers.

Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins. Show hospitality to one another without grumbling.

As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another. Here we go.

What do you use your gifts for? Serving one another. As good stewards of God's varied grace.

Whoever speaks as one who speaks oracles of God. And I would note that pastors, when they speak the word, they are speaking the very oracles of God.

Prophecy is not limited to this idea that somehow I receive direct revelation from God. All of us have received direct revelation from God.

And it all happens to be wonderfully written in a book. And the job of a pastor is to preach the word.

So I would note that any pastor who gets up, who opens up the scripture, is speaking prophetically, speaking the very oracles of God.

And so you have to have a much broader understanding of what prophecy is to understand this, that all pastors who preach the word correctly, they are prophesying.

They are speaking the very words of God. That's kind of what's going on here. So the one who speaks in a tongue.

Okay, so pursue love, earnestly desire spiritual gifts, especially that you may prophesy.

For the one who speaks in a tongue, watch this, speaks not to men but to God. Now, we've already established from 1

14:27

Corinthians chapter 12, this is not a universal gift. If somebody rightly has this gift, they're speaking in a language they don't know.

And I would note from Acts chapter 2, it's very clear that they're speaking human languages. That's just the case.

When people began speaking in tongues in Acts chapter 2, somebody who didn't know how to speak Parthenian, all of a sudden was speaking perfect Parthenian.

And the Parthenians there were thinking, wow, we're hearing the wonders of God in our own language. Aren't these

Galileans? So the one who speaks in a tongue speaks not to men but to God, for no one understands him, but he utters mysteries in the spirit.

On the other hand, the one who prophesies speaks to people for their upbuilding. And so you get a note here.

In church, if somebody has the gift of tongues, and nobody there understands them, no one understands them.

They're not serving anybody. And this then becomes the basis of what Paul's saying. So you have the gift of tongues, but there's nobody who speaks

Parthenian in the congregation. And when you stand up and you start speaking, nobody understands you. Well, you might have had that gift, well and good, but nobody's benefiting from it.

And this is where he's pointing this out, and how this will develop is important. On the other hand, the one who prophesies, he speaks to people for their upbuilding, and their encouragement, and their consolation.

The one who speaks in a tongue builds up himself, but the one who prophesies builds up the church.

And so you'll note here, again, this is not a universal gift.

It's just one of many varied gifts. Now, I want you all to speak in tongues, but even more,

I want you all to prophesy. The one who prophesies is greater than the one who speaks in tongues, unless someone interprets, so that the church may be built up.

So, it doesn't sound like he's praising that everybody should be speaking in tongues. Like, not at all. Now, brothers, if I come to you speaking in tongues, how will

I benefit you, unless I bring you some revelation, or knowledge, or prophecy, or teaching?

Answer, you won't. If even lifeless instruments, such as the flute or the harp, do not give distinct notes, how will anyone know what's played?

Nobody will. And if the bugle gives an indistinct sound, who will get ready for battle?

16:58

Nobody will. So, with yourselves, if with your tongue you utter speech that is not intelligible, how will anyone know what is said?

They won't. In other words, you won't be benefiting anyone. For you will be speaking into the air.

Now, there are doubtless many different languages in the world, and none is without meaning. But, if I do not know the meaning of the language,

I'll be a foreigner to the speaker, and the speaker will be a foreigner to me. So, with yourselves, since you are eager for manifestations of the

Spirit, strive to excel in building up the church. Hmm. Right.

So, you're sitting there going, oh. This isn't an argument in favor of everybody receiving tongues, not at all.

And this is an argument against those who have the gift legitimately, even practicing it in church, unless there's somebody to interpret, because they're not building up the church.

Therefore, the one who speaks in a tongue should pray that he may interpret. Note, therefore, the one who speaks in a tongue doesn't say,

All of you need to pray that you should interpret. Only the people who have this gift. They should what?

They should pray that they may interpret. For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful.

I don't even know what I'm speaking. If my tongue all of a sudden started speaking Chinese, I don't know any

Chinese, right? My mind would be completely unfruitful. So, what am I to do?

I will pray with my spirit, but I will pray with my mind also. I would note here, yes, those who legitimately have the ability to speak a tongue, a language of humans that they haven't studied or learned, but they don't know how to interpret it, sure, they may be praying, but Paul says,

I will pray with my spirit, but I will pray with my mind also. I will sing praise with my spirit, but I will sing praise with my mind also.

Otherwise, if you give thanks with your spirit, how can anyone in the position of an outsider say amen to your thanksgiving when he does not know what you're saying?

For you may be giving thanks well enough, but the other person is not being built up. So, I thank

God that I speak in tongues more than all of you. Nevertheless, in church, I would rather speak five words with my mind in order to instruct others than 10 ,000 words in a tongue.

Brothers, do not be children in your thinking. Be infants in evil, but in your thinking, be mature.

In the law, it is written, By people of strange tongues and by the lips of foreigners will I speak to this people, and even then they will not listen to me, says the

Lord. Here, Paul gets at the reason for tongues. Tongues is a sign gift.

And he's citing Isaiah chapter 28, verse 11 here, which is a prophecy of judgment against unbelieving

Jews. And so, tongues was a sign to them as a fulfillment of Isaiah 28, 11.

By people of strange tongues, by lips of foreigners, will I speak to this people, and even then they will not listen to me.

It's a sign gift, a sign to unbelieving Jews. That's the purpose of tongues. Thus, tongues are a sign, not for believers, but for unbelievers.

While prophecy is a sign, not for unbelievers, but for believers. If, therefore, the whole church comes together and all speak in tongues, and an outsider or unbelievers enter, will they not say to you that you are out of your minds?

If all prophesy and an unbeliever or an outsider enters, he's convicted by all and he's called to account by all, the secrets of his heart are disclosed, and so falling on his face, he will worship

God and declare that God is really among you. So what then, brothers? When you come together, each one has a hymn, a lesson, a revelation, a tongue, or an interpretation.

Let all things be done for building up. That's the standard, that's the requirement.

Everything has to be done in church for the purpose of building up. If anyone speaks in a tongue, let there be two or only at the most three, each in turn, and let someone interpret.

You can't build up the church without an interpreter. But if there is no one to interpret, let each of them keep silent in church and speak to himself and to God.

Let two or three prophets speak, and let the others weigh what is said. If a revelation is made to another sitting there, let the first be silent, for you can all prophesy one by one, so that all may learn and all may be encouraged, and the spirit of the prophets are subject to the prophets.

For God is not a God of confusion, but a God of peace. As in the churches of all the saints, the women should keep silent in the churches.

They're not permitted to speak, but they should be in submission, as the law also says. If there is anything they desire to learn, let them ask their husbands at home.

It is shameful for a woman to speak in church. Or was it from you that the word of God came? Or are you the only ones that it has reached?

If anyone thinks that he is a prophet or spiritual, he should acknowledge that the things I am writing you are a command of the

Lord. All of it is a command of the Lord. If anyone does not recognize this, he is not recognized.

So, my brothers, earnestly desire to prophesy. I do not forbid speaking in tongues, but all things should be done decently and in order.

And that means if someone's going to be in church speaking in a tongue, it's not a universal gift.

There has to be an interpreter. Otherwise, they have to remain silent. So, you'll note this passage does not talk about some universal prayer language that everybody who's a

Christian can receive. Not. At. All. So, we've got a big problem here.

And that is that Jared and Kathy here are basically saying if you feel left out because you haven't received their prayer language, don't worry.

It'll come. And what comes out of their mouth next is not only biblical, it contradicts what we just read in 1

Corinthians 12, 13, and 14. But this is just nonsense. It's embarrassingly stupid.

Here we go. I'm baptized. I'm saved. I'm a son. I'm a daughter. Sisters are singing to Jesus. Hallelujah. Over and over.

Maybe your tongue will start. Sing praise and all of a sudden, you'll be going, blah, blah, blah.

Right. Coulda bought a Hyundai, shoulda bought a Kia is not a language. It's true.

I like what you said. Sometimes it's a process. Sometimes it's gradual.

What I think about is the lepers were healed as they went. Which has nothing to do with the gift of tongues.

And I would note, those whom the Holy Spirit gave the gift of tongues to in the book of Acts, they never had any blockages.

None whatsoever. They immediately spoke in tongues as the Holy Spirit gave them utterance.

We're gonna get it down the road. But don't invalidate the

Holy Spirit that's upon you. I think sometimes we don't get it. You're invalidating the words that the

Holy Spirit had the Apostle Paul write for us in 1 Corinthians 12, 13 and 14 by this false doctrine that every

Christian should have this prayer language thingy. That's not what those texts teach at all.

Because we're trying a formula. It's old religious teaching is blocking us or even our own flesh.

What is it gonna say? So what's keeping you from having your prayer language old religious teaching? You know, the biblical kind.

Where somebody rightly handled God's word. I like what Jared also said and I teach this.

Just start praising Jesus. I think a lot of it is people are just closing their mouth and expecting tongues just to throw up and out.

It won't happen that way. It won't. And what we have to do is we gotta get those vocal cords, our lips, our tongue, all of that moving.

Where in scripture does it say in order to receive your prayer language you gotta get your tongues, your lips and all those other things moving.

Nowhere. This is not biblical. This is nonsense. I've even taught people, I'm like, if you're a worshiper just start singing.

And maybe you're gonna sing a tongue before you speak and pray a tongue. But don't,

I think we get too caught up and hooked up on I'm not praying in tongues and then years later people are blocked because they're still not praying in tongues.

Right. Well what I do is I tell So they're blocked because they're not praying in tongues as if somehow that's a problem.

Nowhere in scripture does it teach that prayer language in tongues is a universal gift for all

Christians. 1 Corinthians 12 makes it clear that God gives a variety of gifts. It's an honor and a privilege for me to lay hands on people but I've also done it remotely where just Holy Spirit falls on people but I teach them this

I say, speak loud enough for you to hear yourself. And I also try to tell them, put that chin up.

Okay. Because this is unlocking, as you said, the vocal chords. Oh, so the problem with people not speaking, given their prayer language in tongues is they haven't put their chin up enough.

Blblblblblblblbl. This is nonsense. Head bowed, eyes closed just waiting on their mouth to move. They're just waiting.

Now there are times, Kathy where I've laid hands on people and their mouth starts going and then they start speaking in tongues. But there are other times where you do the speaking, most of the time you do the speaking as Holy Spirit does the enabling.

So you might see the one syllable or the phrase in a language you don't know, you don't understand.

You might see it in your eyes. You might hear it in your ears. Holy Spirit spoke it to you. He initiates it. You speak it out.

So, and you might feel something rising up. You might feel the electric love of Holy Spirit. You might not feel anything at all, but you open your mouth.

You start speaking it out over and over loud enough for you to hear yourself. And then more words start flowing over and over.

And sometimes it's a small phrase. It's like a baby, goo -goo, ga -ga, mama, da -da. So your first foray into speaking in tongues is goo -goo, ga -ga, mama.

I heard that when I was in the latter rain. That's what people told me. It becomes a language.

It really is. It really is. And your mind is like, what are you doing? But your spirit's like, yeah, let's go.

And you do the speaking. You're worshiping Jesus. No pressure. And you, it's loud enough for you to hear yourself.

And you over and over let him. And then, like for me, it was powerful. Like just every day in Pakistan, the last 12 days, every day we saw people receive the baptism of the

Holy Spirit. Some of them wept and cried and shook. Some didn't. There is no baptism of the Holy Spirit.

That's not a biblical doctrine. Let me show you this. Ephesians four. Reference it at the beginning of the program. Okay. Let's see here.

It's back up here. All right. I therefore a prisoner for the Lord. This is the Apostle Paul. I urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the

Spirit and the bond of peace. There is one body and there is one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope that belongs to your call.

One Lord, one faith, one baptism. There is no second baptism, a subsequent baptism of the

Holy Spirit. That's just not true. There is one baptism, one God and Father of all who is over all and through all and in all.

But grace was given to each one of us according to the measure of Christ's gift. So, aside from being embarrassing, this is just nonsense and stupid.

Mama goo goo ga ga. That ain't speaking in tongues. And the reason why you're not speaking in tongues is not because you didn't lift your head up and say mama goo goo ga ga.

It's because God hasn't given you the gift. It's not a universal gift. You know, it was just, they did it.

The Holy Spirit flowed, more words flowed. And I explained to them, even that little phrase, whatever that was, that you received, praying it every single day to set aside five.

And by the way, the modern charismatic movement and their manifestation of tongues, it's not tongues.

It's gibberish. They aren't actually speaking a language. They're just speaking nonsense. Day, 10 minutes a day.

And then I told all the pastors and leaders the secret. And you know the secret, Kathy. You want to see the power of God before a meeting?

Oh, here's the secret. Are you ready? Here's something that's not written in the scripture, but he's figured out the secret. He's got secret knowledge here.

That's Gnosticism. All doctrines that are necessary for you to believe as a

Christian are written in the scriptures. The scriptures are sufficient. Let me prove that as well.

If I go to 2 Timothy chapter three, tail end of that passage, all scripture is breathed out by God and is profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction and for training in righteousness so that the man of God may be complete and equipped for every good work.

There are no secrets. Literally everything you need to know as a Christian, it's an open book.

It's all there in the text. So this guy's now trafficking in secret knowledge, secret.

He's got the secret. You want to know the secret to see the power of God moving in a meeting? What's the secret, Jared? That you received, praying it every single day.

Set aside five minutes a day, 10 minutes a day. And then I told all the pastors and leaders the secret. And you know the secret, Kathy.
