- 00:01
- Define politics. Define politics.
- 00:13
- Politics is the outgrowth of people living in community. Technically, it's a Greek word. Polis, which literally means the gathering of the civil state.
- 00:24
- Politics is just ruling wisely in the civil sphere, understanding how Jesus wants to rule our city, our state, our nation, in a wise and faithful way, distinct from the church, distinct from the family.
- 00:36
- It's a rule where the civil authority has God -given obligation to act. We tend to use it with regard to governments.
- 00:45
- But I would say governments include church government, family government, state government.
- 00:51
- But broadly, when we say politics, we frequently are talking about the civil realm. City council, city government, state government, county government, and federal government.
- 01:02
- Politics. At its root, the word politics literally means the engagement of the people with their culture.
- 01:12
- And unfortunately, politics is often synonymous with the word government. They're not the same thing.
- 01:18
- In biblical terms, God's government is over all things. And the polis, the city, the function of the civil magistrate, is a delegated government by God, which is a minister of God, to do good and punish evil.
- 01:32
- I have no problem with politics. In fact, what we want is, we want, this is why we want a biblical people, a biblical literate people.
- 01:40
- We want Christian communities, which will necessitate Christian politics. Part of the task for us as Christians is to call believers back to that engagement in the culture.
- 01:54
- We do politics when we spend our money. We do politics when we patronize certain kinds of media.
- 02:04
- We do politics not just when we go to the polls, not just when we plant flags or banners or signs in our yard.
- 02:13
- We do politics not just when we put bumper stickers on our car. We do politics when we live our lives.
- 02:22
- So, if we're going to be principled about our politics, we need to be thinking about everything.
