Dr. ERNEST J. ZARA III,
author, blogger, educator, & member of the National
Association of Scholars, who will address:
“FROM CHARACTER to
COLOR: The IMPACT of
CRITICAL RACE THEORY
on AMERICAN EDUCATION!”
- 00:05
- Live from the historic parsonage of the 19th century gospel minister George Norcross in downtown
- 00:10
- Carlisle, Pennsylvania, it's Iron Sharpens Iron. This is a radio platform in which pastors,
- 00:23
- Christian scholars, and theologians address the burning issues facing the Church and the world today.
- 00:31
- Proverbs 27, verse 17 tells us, Iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.
- 00:38
- Matthew Henry said that in this passage, we are cautioned to take heed with whom we converse and directed to have a view in conversation to make one another wiser and better.
- 00:50
- It is our hope that this goal will be accomplished over the next two hours, and we hope to hear from you, the listener, with your own questions.
- 00:58
- And now, here's your host, Chris Arnzen. Good afternoon,
- 01:10
- Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, Lake City, Florida, and the rest of humanity living on the planet
- 01:16
- Earth who are listening via live streaming at ironsharpensironradio .com.
- 01:22
- This is Chris Arnzen, your host of Iron Sharpens Iron Radio, wishing you all a happy Tuesday on this 30th day of August 2022.
- 01:31
- Before I introduce to you my fascinating guest today,
- 01:36
- I have a very great bit of news, a wonderful bit of news, especially for those who have been nagging me for a long time.
- 01:48
- When are you going to be arranging another live, moderated public debate with your friend, apologist,
- 01:56
- Dr. James R. White of Alpha and Omega Ministries? Well, I have the exciting news that I just had confirmed this morning that Dr.
- 02:07
- Peter Van Cleeft has accepted my invitation to debate
- 02:14
- Dr. White on the Textus Receptus Only issue.
- 02:20
- Dr. Van Cleeft is the one who is an advocate of that, also known as confessional bibliology, and Dr.
- 02:30
- James R. White will be opposing that understanding of Scripture in this live, public, moderated debate, which will be held in South Central Pennsylvania.
- 02:43
- We will give you more details as to the exact location and the exact date.
- 02:49
- It will be, with certainty, during the week of September 22nd, which is a
- 02:56
- Thursday, because that's the day I'm holding my biannual
- 03:01
- Iron Sharpens Iron Radio Free Pastors Luncheon featuring guest speaker Dr. James R.
- 03:07
- White of Alpha and Omega Ministries. So sometime during that week, from the
- 03:12
- Monday before that through the Sunday after that, we will select a date that is best for the church, which will be the venue of this event, and I will give you an update on that as soon as I can as to all of the specifics and how you can attend.
- 03:31
- I'm very excited about this. This is a very important issue that not only divides
- 03:37
- Christians in general, but even has now come to divide Reformed Baptists, confessional
- 03:43
- Reformed Baptists, which is why they have adopted, the ones that are advocating the
- 03:51
- Textus Receptus only position, have adopted the name Confessional Bibliology for this view of Scripture.
- 04:02
- And so we hope that you can attend this, and I also hope that everybody who is a man in ministry leadership who is listening will register for the
- 04:11
- Iron Sharpens Iron Radio Free Pastors Luncheon. As I said, it's Thursday, September 22nd, 11 a .m.
- 04:17
- to 2 p .m. at Church of the Living Christ in Loisville, Pennsylvania. It's absolutely free of charge, and everybody attending will be leaving with a heavy bag of free brand new books, personally selected by me, that have been donated from Christian publishers all over the
- 04:35
- United States and the United Kingdom. So I hope that you can attend, and if you want to register, send me an email to chrisarnson at gmail .com,
- 04:43
- chrisarnson at gmail .com, and put Pastors Luncheon in the subject line. My dear friend,
- 04:50
- Patty Jennings, the former owner of Cumberland Valley Bible Book Services, which is one of my primary advertisers here on Iron Sharpens Iron Radio, they still are, even after my dear friends
- 05:05
- Todd and Patty Jennings sold the business to the
- 05:10
- Ritger and Nehrer families. And Patty said to me, very enthusiastically, you should get my friend,
- 05:23
- Dr. Ernie Zara, on your program. He has just written a book called
- 05:28
- From Character to Color, The Impact of Critical Race Theory on American Education.
- 05:34
- And being as extremely familiar with the best in Christian literature, and in this case it would be even a broader audience, exclusively
- 05:46
- Christian, but knowing of her experience, her discernment in regard to literature, having been in the book business for so long,
- 05:59
- I take Patty Jennings' recommendations extremely seriously. And so I did not hesitate to invite
- 06:07
- Dr. Ernest J. Zara III on the program today. He's an author, a blogger, an educator, and member of the
- 06:15
- National Association of Scholars. And it's my honor and privilege to welcome you for the very first time ever to Iron Sharpens Iron Radio, Dr.
- 06:25
- Ernest J. Zara III. Hi, Chris. Thank you. Good afternoon. It's a pleasure to be with you today.
- 06:30
- I'm looking forward to our conversation about this critical issue and other issues as well that we are facing as Christians in culture today.
- 06:38
- Amen. Well, before we even get on or in, I should say, the heart of the matter today,
- 06:45
- From Character to Color, The Impact of Critical Race Theory on American Education, we have a tradition here on Iron Sharpens Iron Radio Sure.
- 06:53
- where whenever we have a first -time guest, we have that guest provide for our listeners a summary of their salvation testimony, and that would include the kind of religious atmosphere you were raised in, if any, and the kind of providential circumstances our sovereign
- 07:14
- Lord raised up in your life that drew you to himself and saved you. So I'd love to hear your story.
- 07:20
- Oh, I'd be happy to share that. My story began in Bloomfield, New Jersey, where my wife and I were raised.
- 07:27
- We were raised about seven miles apart. She from Cedar Grove and I from Bloomfield. I was a senior in high school, and some of my friends were believers.
- 07:36
- I wasn't at the time. They invited me for a basketball tournament up at wonderful Scroon Lake, New York, at Word of Life.
- 07:44
- And on January 13th, at age 17, I gave my life to Christ.
- 07:49
- And I remember David Clapp turned around to me, having sat in front of me.
- 07:56
- As a high school kid, you kind of don't want to stand out in a crowd in the middle of a couple hundred people.
- 08:02
- Even though we're kind of full of bravado, we're still kind of shy at that age. And I recall that he turned around and asked me, would you like to go forward?
- 08:10
- And I said, yes, absolutely. And at that point, changed my life, became a Christian, enrolled shortly thereafter, six months after, actually, in Northeastern Bible College at Essex Hills, New Jersey, which is where I met my wife,
- 08:25
- Suzy. We were there. We graduated from Northeastern. I played soccer there for several years and baseball, basketball, but primarily soccer and baseball, where we won the national championship.
- 08:37
- And I had the privilege as a freshman to score the winning goal against Grace College. And at that point, my life was like, wow,
- 08:47
- God, this is amazing. But what I wasn't really aware of is that not all
- 08:52
- Christian life is the goal -scoring moment of your life. There are ups and downs in that.
- 08:58
- Well, within a year and a half, I blew up my right knee, and so I had a long, long road to come back from that.
- 09:06
- But Lord was good, and I was able to come back from that, middle American, first team, Christian college.
- 09:12
- And at that point, I was married, and my wife and I had graduated college, and we decided that we'd move out to California.
- 09:20
- And there's a long story there, but I'll just make it really brief, and that is we came out to California to teach in a
- 09:26
- Christian school, my very first job. I remember that it paid just barely $6 ,000 a year, teaching fifth grade, and I had to do sweeping of the floors in the evening to make ends meet.
- 09:36
- But Suzie and I were on our own, being first born, and we came out west.
- 09:43
- And we settled in Orange County, L .A. County, and we wound up our time in Kern County for about 35 years in the city of Bakersfield.
- 09:52
- Along the way, between the time we arrived in California and the time we settled in Bakersfield, I picked up some graduate degrees.
- 10:01
- And if you had known me as a high school graduate, I was a functional illiterate, and came from a family that was not educated.
- 10:11
- My dad had been Buddhist from high school. My mom dropped out to have me. And so my upbringing,
- 10:17
- I was the first believer in the family. I was the first high school, college graduate in the family. But when we moved to California, I heard this guy on the radio, and his name was
- 10:27
- Dr. John Warwick Montgomery, and he was answering Bible questions. Yes, Lutheran scholar and theologian.
- 10:35
- I remember him well on the John Ankerberg show, very frequently being featured there.
- 10:41
- Absolutely, yeah. And so he started a school, a law school, apologetics and theology and law combined, and decided to apply.
- 10:51
- Lo and behold, he accepted my application, and I studied under him, under Walter Martin and Josh McDowell, and some other scholars at the time who were imports to the college to teach specific classes.
- 11:04
- So my early mentoring became very important with John Montgomery. Walter Martin was another one.
- 11:10
- I spent a year studying under him in the college environment. A lot of very fond memories of seeing him on the
- 11:17
- John Ankerberg show as well. Yes, yes, and those two were a wonderful pair back -to -back to have as professors, believe me.
- 11:25
- And as a young 20 -something -year -old, seeing the depths of the faith and the intellectual aspects that are associated with it, it wasn't just enough for me to say,
- 11:37
- I believe in Jesus. I wanted to know why. I wanted to know who else did. I wanted to know why it was different than others and how
- 11:44
- I could defend that belief if I had to. So I got a degree in apologetics and then went to Grace Graduate School, picked up another degree in biblical studies, and then
- 11:53
- Baker Steel picked up my third master's degree in education, curriculum, and instruction. Then I melded all that together in a doctoral program at the
- 12:01
- University of Southern California, and I happened to study under Dallas Willard down there who was on my dissertation committee.
- 12:08
- So little did I know that I had some really strong heroes of the faith molding me and talking with me, having dinner with me, and taking me under their wing personally.
- 12:18
- So as a young believer, I'll never forget what Dr. Montgomery and Dr. Willard said to me.
- 12:25
- Montgomery said to me, you know, you need to be on the radio because you have something that people listen to when you speak.
- 12:33
- You have it as if you're teaching. Well, I began a teaching career and spent over 40 years in the classrooms at different levels.
- 12:41
- Dr. Willard said to me, you know, you no longer have to please anybody now that you have a degree. Go make your mark for the
- 12:47
- Lord in the world. And I tell you what, those two men with those two basic sentence declaratives to me set me afire for moving forward like you would not believe.
- 12:59
- Now I've written my 15th book in the process, actually, finishing the 15th book.
- 13:05
- I've spoken at churches. I've debated atheists at colleges. I've done all kinds of things from a functional, literate standpoint, giving my heart to Christ, and then getting the training necessary and believing that you can do it because someone has confidence in you, and then being taken under their wing and given opportunities to show that, certainly has had rough times.
- 13:28
- But all that being said, I wouldn't change a thing. From where I am now, from what those men invested in my life, and the opportunities that I've had to serve the
- 13:38
- Lord, I am riding the wave of living the dream. So I've been blessed.
- 13:47
- I've had a hand on my life, my wife, and my children and grandchildren. And here we are retired, semi -retired, living in the state of Washington presently as a member of a great, great
- 13:57
- Baptist church, Discovery Baptist Church in Gig Harbor, where I started attending Baptist church in Bloomfield, New Jersey, First Baptist Church.
- 14:05
- And then out in California, I have to tell you, it's like a smorgasbord when we arrived. I mean, we went from Chuck Swindoll to John MacArthur to Chuck Smith to, you know, just to name it, the variety of Bible teachers on the radio and in person that you could choose from.
- 14:22
- It was difficult to plug into one church because of all the different, the smorgasbord of theology you were getting.
- 14:31
- And so we just found ourselves, you know, every week going to different churches without plugging into one until we moved to Bakersfield and plugged into a community church up there, a
- 14:43
- Bible -believing, solid evangelical church. So that's the pilgrimage in a nutshell.
- 14:51
- And I'm just blessed. What can I say? I just wake up every morning saying, thank you, God, another day. Well, praise
- 14:57
- God. And when in your life did you realize that you had the skills and the interest and perhaps even the calling to enter into the field of education?
- 15:09
- Well, in Bible college you were required to do this. And so some of the hours that we were selecting, they were basically given a list of places to select from to go, you know, to serve the church and the community.
- 15:21
- So one of those was, and believe it when I tell you, it was not my first choice, but one of those was to go to Brookdale Baptist Church in Bloomfield and to teach a group of fifth graders.
- 15:38
- And I was, like, so fearful of that. I mean, being in front of people scared me at the time. You know,
- 15:43
- I was really insecure, not having the words to frame how I wanted to or what I wanted to say, not having the vocabulary to express that, not certain really in my biblical knowledge yet within, you know, just a few years of being a
- 15:57
- Christian. And so I had an opportunity to do that. What I found out is when I began to talk about my issues and who
- 16:02
- I was, that I had my aides working for me with the students. I had the eye contact necessary with the students, and they actually sat and listened and asked questions at the end.
- 16:14
- And I said to myself, if this is what teaching's about, sign me up. Because the engagement that I found that I could build off of relationally between the students, me, and their families, that whole network of environment of relationships was so appealing that it was ministry -oriented whether I wanted it to be or not.
- 16:36
- And I quickly realized that it was and how it could be effective in that respect. And so whether or not
- 16:41
- I was in Christian education, which I spent 11 years in, or whether I was in public education, which
- 16:47
- I spent over 30, 31 years in, at college, high school, middle school, most of it secondary and college, the same approach worked in that you stand in front of people.
- 17:00
- You connect with people on a human level. You relate to them their experiences, your experiences.
- 17:07
- You give them something that they can grow their lives in. Present them truth because they're looking for truth in this wayward world.
- 17:15
- And the relationships inside, mostly outside of class, develop at a much deeper level.
- 17:20
- And then the respect is there for your faith because of that relationship that's developed. And I found that that niche that God provided for me to reach out to people, not just in a blatant here's my testimony in the classroom approach, but as an arm around kind of soulful hug where people have needs and need to have those met.
- 17:40
- For a teacher who cares, for a teacher who meets the family, for a teacher who sees them in the community, never forget this.
- 17:48
- When I was out jogging one day with a fellow colleague, believer, who I was mentoring for a position in a school, we were talking and we were running by a
- 17:57
- Starbucks in the parking lot of the shopping center, and I heard this, hey, Dr. Zara. And I looked over at one of my students, and he looked at his dad and said, that's my teacher.
- 18:08
- And I said to myself, you know, for the first time in my life, I realized no matter where I am or what
- 18:14
- I do, I am that kid's teacher. And I began to extrapolate that to the faith because when
- 18:21
- I leave church on Sunday, I'm still a Christian. I'm still a believer, and people are going to know that about me.
- 18:28
- And if they don't, then I think there's something wrong with the walk that needs to be corrected. Well, I am delighted that there are people like you immersed in standing against the tide of Satan's kingdom that has infiltrated and consumed and taken over of our lives, in particular of our lives that involve even the youngest of children, leaving many of us horrified, but having to remind ourselves,
- 19:01
- God's in control, and he will have the victory, in spite of how anything looks at this time.
- 19:09
- But this book that you have written, a very important book, that anybody who has a concern, and this should be all of you, anybody who has a concern about critical race theory, about the social justice warrior movement, about the woke movement, all these other phrases, this should be in the libraries of everybody listening, and the contents should be in the minds of everybody listening,
- 19:41
- From Character to Color, The Impact of Critical Race Theory on American Education, by my guest today.
- 19:50
- First of all, the title sounds like it is a lament about how many who claim to be champions for the cause of the welfare and good and progress of black people and other minorities.
- 20:12
- This is a lament that the words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.,
- 20:20
- in his famous I Had a Dream speech, have been reversed. He longed for a day when men were not judged by the color of the contents of their character.
- 20:34
- And I have many very serious disagreements with the theology of Dr.
- 20:42
- Martin Luther King Jr., but that is one thing that I can wholeheartedly agree with him on.
- 20:50
- And so why don't you tell us about this book, when it occurred to you...
- 20:55
- I've got to say something about these frightening things that are happening. Yes. And why you believe that you had a valid voice to be included in the discussion and debate in the public arena over this.
- 21:11
- Right, right, right. Well, there's a lot of questions there. I'll take them apart as I can and approach it accordingly.
- 21:21
- As I said before, I think the Lord gives me certain insights into trends in American culture, and you can rest assured that what is in culture will eventually work its way into schools.
- 21:34
- And it's because human beings go to school and they're in the culture. The same thing with the church.
- 21:40
- You can expect what's affecting culture. The people come to church once a week, twice a week.
- 21:46
- They're going to come with some of those that affect church as well. So there's a corollary there and a parallel. But to get to why, here's an example of one of the reasons why.
- 21:59
- And I'll preface it with this. I started hearing about the problems they were facing in the classroom.
- 22:06
- My most recent job was training teachers, teaching teachers how to teach, what to teach, you know, the methods.
- 22:12
- And one of the classes that I had to teach was about multiculturalism and trauma -informed instruction, that kind of stuff.
- 22:22
- And I started reading the literature in great detail. I was really concerned about it. And so those concerns, plus people were contacting me knowing that I do write to the different trends because I do have several books out.
- 22:37
- And I received several emails, and one of those sounds like this. Hello, Dr. Zara. I am currently a public school teacher here in Washington State.
- 22:47
- And prior to teaching, I taught public school in other places here in Washington. She's got several years' experience, over 30 years actually.
- 22:55
- She said, I just read the preface to your book, From Character to Color, and I'm now starting Chapter 1.
- 23:01
- I had to take the time to find out how to contact you and say thank you for what I'm about to read.
- 23:07
- In my short 30 -plus years teaching in the elementary grades, what I've observed over the past six, seven years has been nothing short of a slide into something
- 23:15
- I did not recognize. I'm grateful for your well -documented book, for your perspective. And as a person of faith,
- 23:22
- I am trying to find my way in the last five years before I retire, but it's nothing short of difficult.
- 23:29
- So thank you for all the work you have put into the book, your acknowledgment section who has spoke to me, and sincerely a fellow educator who is giving it my best.
- 23:38
- And you ask me why. People in the church are beginning to say,
- 23:45
- Church, what do we do about what my kids are hearing at school? I don't know what to do about this slamming of my children.
- 23:52
- They're coming home asking questions about, am I this, am I that? Mom, Dad, I don't know what to do.
- 23:58
- Parents didn't know what to do. And if they did something, they were called names. So it just fell onto my shoulders and into my spirit, if you will, that something had to be written about this to give parents the sigh of relief they needed, that there was a soulful support for them and ways to approach this and to let them know that, okay, your kids are dealing with this, but here's how you can deal with it as well as a
- 24:23
- Christian parent. So I write for both Christians and non -Christians, and you'll notice my Chapter 3 is about common grace and critical race, the balance and the contrast of those two.
- 24:33
- But this letter, the way it wrapped up is, as a person of faith, I'm trying to find my way in the last five years.
- 24:41
- If that's a teacher talking, imagine the students and the families on the home front. Wow, and it would be wise for us right now, obviously, before we get too deep into discussion, even though I've addressed this issue and many things involving this issue many times in this program, in this day and age, right now,
- 25:03
- I don't think we could talk about this too much, to be perfectly honest. And different authors and minds have something that they uniquely contribute to the discussion.
- 25:16
- But perhaps it would be wise for you to define critical race. Oh, sure, sure.
- 25:22
- And it depends on who you talk to about this. And rather than get into a lengthy history from the
- 25:31
- Frankfurt School in Germany all the way through top -notch ivory tower schools, if you will, just let's say that it's a theory that's been adopted originally in law schools.
- 25:44
- Derrick Bell in the 50s and 60s came up with it. Kimberly Crenshaw refined it. And Kimberly Crenshaw, the way this whole thing happened with Crenshaw is really interesting because she decided that she would assemble a conference as a
- 25:59
- UCLA professor, and she would have this conference and have the people invited to come to the conference so that they can hear about this theory.
- 26:09
- And this theory basically said that there's primarily some inequalities in the housing market and inequalities that extend from the housing market to other systemic things that appear in American culture.
- 26:22
- And some of those systemic things are schools, admissions to colleges, and maybe athletics at the time, general economics and business, where the system is set up for and set up by whites, for whites, that the outcomes, even if people of color were to achieve them, would benefit somehow the status quo or benefit whites.
- 26:48
- But as the American Bar Association, as the theory began to grow, it adopted race into its fold because critical theories is a big umbrella term.
- 26:57
- Critical race theory is just one of the different particulars of race under the critical theory umbrella.
- 27:04
- The American Bar Association said CRT, critical race theory, is not a diversity and inclusion training, but it's a practice of interrogating the role of race and racism in society.
- 27:16
- And it emerged in the legal academy. Then it spread to other fields of scholarship. So basically what we have here is something coming from the ivory tower that eventually worked its way into American culture and as a result of the incidents with George Floyd and the
- 27:31
- BLM movement wound its way into sort of leverage over many areas of American culture that were deemed systemically racist.
- 27:42
- And so not to tackle or benefit or give something to the groups that were clamoring for attention at that time would they be labeled even further racist.
- 27:52
- So instead of a corporation being labeled racist, they'll have diversity, equity, inclusion offices, and they'll have a lot of funds spent on diversity training and sensitivity training and things of that nature for the companies.
- 28:07
- Mind you now, what is in culture eventually comes to schools. And so what you have now is the entire system from the top down is being affected by an external immutable characteristic called skin color.
- 28:22
- And so now we have children coming home traumatized because their teacher is saying that their skin color and racism are connected.
- 28:32
- And in the days prior to the emergence of CRT in the last few years, people of color,
- 28:41
- BIPOC students, black, indigenous people of color, were the ones that are being traumatized according to the systemic oppressive or oppressors, if you will.
- 28:50
- Now we have whites being singled out by being called names as the oppressors. They're being traumatized.
- 28:57
- It's a reverse traumatization. And so where we have one group being traumatized,
- 29:03
- CRT allows the other group now to traumatize in return, which is not uncommon because Ibram Kendi as an anti -racist uses that same strategy to discriminate today to eliminate past discrimination and discriminate today to keep it from happening in the future.
- 29:19
- So when you have anti -racism now connected with CRT, it is more activistic than it is philosophical or just ideological.
- 29:28
- In fact, we have... Everywhere in the schools. Yeah, we have to pick up where you left off there because we're going into our first break right now.
- 29:37
- If anybody has a question about critical race theory or anything that would fall under the umbrella of the woke movement, social justice warrior movement, and other things, send in your e -mail to ChrisArnes, A -R -N -Z -E -N at gmail .com.
- 29:54
- As always, give us your first and state of residence and your country of residence if you live outside the
- 30:00
- USA. Please only remain anonymous if your question involves a personal and private matter.
- 30:05
- Let's say you are in a church that teaches as truth critical race theory.
- 30:12
- I even know of an allegedly conservative evangelical church not far from where I'm sitting that has a very good reputation throughout the
- 30:25
- Christian community in South Central Pennsylvania who actually offered courses on Whiteness 101.
- 30:33
- So, you might be a member of a church like that and you don't want to draw identity to yourself because you are very uncomfortable about what's going on and you're speaking against this publicly.
- 30:47
- I could understand something like that would compel you to be anonymous, but if it's just a general question on critical race theory and all related matters, please give us your first name, city and state, and country of residence.

- 32:51
- Dr. Joe Moorcraft. I'm Joe Riley, a faithful Iron Sharpens Iron Radio listener here in Atai in County Kildare, Ireland.
- 32:58
- Going back to 2005, one of my very favorite guests on Iron Sharpens Iron is
- 33:04
- Dr. Joe Moorcraft. If you've been blessed by Iron Sharpens Iron Radio, Dr. Moorcraft and Heritage Presbyterian Church of Cumming, Georgia are largely to thank since they are one of the program's largest financial supporters.
- 33:17
- Heritage Presbyterian Church of Cumming is in Forsyth County, a part of the Atlanta metropolitan area.
- 33:23
- Heritage is a thoroughly biblical church, unwaveringly committed to Westminster standards, and Dr.
- 33:28
- Joe Moorcraft is the author of an eight -volume commentary on the larger catechism. Heritage is a member of the
- 33:34
- Hanover Presbytery, built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief cornerstone, and tracing its roots and heritage back to the great
- 33:43
- Protestant Reformation of the 16th century. Heritage maintains and follows the biblical truth and principles proclaimed by the reformers, scripture alone, grace alone, faith alone,
- 33:55
- Christ alone, and God's glory alone. Their primary goal is the worship of the Triune God that continues in eternity.

- 34:31
- Have you noticed the gap that exists between the Sunday morning sermon and the Sunday school classroom or the small group study?
- 34:39
- So often we experience great preaching from the pulpit, but when it comes time to study God's Word in those smaller settings, well, let's be honest, it leaves a lot to be desired.
- 34:50
- It seems like it is nearly impossible to find good curriculum out there today that is true to the
- 34:55
- Word of God and is built upon sound doctrine, much less it's hard to find curriculum that will actually teach people how to study the
- 35:02
- Bible. Hi there, my name is Jordan Too, and I am the Executive Director of the Baptist Publishing House.
- 35:08
- Our ministry is dedicated to providing local churches with sound Bible study resources.
- 35:15
- Our quarterly curriculum is titled The Baptist Expositor, and for good reason. We are
- 35:20
- Baptist, and we exegete the scriptures. If you want to have a curriculum that teaches your people how to study the

- Word of God, I invite you, go to our website, download a free study, baptistpublishinghouse .com.

- 37:06
- Dan is the president and founder of the historical organization The Historical Bible Society. Their mission?
- 37:11
- To foster belief in the credibility of Scripture as the written Word of God. They go to various churches, schools, and institutions to publicly display a rare collection of Biblical texts along with a fascinating presentation by Mr.
- 37:27
- Patafuco demonstrating the reliability of Scripture. To advance the cause of the
- 37:32
- Gospel, they created a beautiful, perfect facsimile of the genealogy of Jesus Christ from the original engravings contained in a first edition 1611

- 40:12
- Welcome back. This is Chris Ornson of Iron Sharpens Iron Radio. If you just tuned us in, our guest today for the entire two hours is
- 40:18
- Dr. Ernest J. Zara III, author, blogger, educator, and member of the
- 40:24
- National Association of Scholars. We are addressing his book From Character to Color, The Impact of Critical Race Theory on American Education.
- 40:34
- And we have a question already from Thomas in West Islip, Long Island, New York.
- 40:41
- And Thomas asks, why was George Floyd the perfect storm as to why the critical race theory and other connected issues began to start an inferno of this dangerous ideology that spread rapidly across the world?
- 41:01
- Hey, thanks, Thomas. I appreciate the question. You know, it wasn't just George Floyd. If you remember, during the presidential election in 2020, the
- 41:10
- BLM burst onto the scene as they interrupted Bernie Sanders at one of his campaign stops with the
- 41:18
- BLM sign and Black Lives Matter. They became quickly militant because their ideology requires activism.
- 41:25
- And they knew that activism and militance would bring a lot of attention. So they started out as a small group and George Floyd just was the perfect match for the explosion of culture.
- 41:38
- And with a national audience and with people on all sides of the political spectrum, including conservatives, moderate liberals, as well as in churches from all different perspectives, began to see a video of a man who died under the knee, if you will, of a law enforcement officer.
- 41:57
- That just lit the fire that was burning, but threw gasoline on it, if you will, and exploded from there.
- 42:06
- What we have then is BLM began to elicit from corporations statements about why they believe there's racism in America because they use that incident to point to a racial inflammation, if you will, in culture.
- 42:22
- If it had been a person of color whose knee was on the neck, probably would have been similar response, but not as extreme.
- 42:32
- Well, yeah, it seems that even when black police officers, whether they're male or female, whenever a suspect or a known criminal is injured or killed, whether for good reasons or because of a tragic accident, immediately they are labeled as if they are white racists, no matter what color they are.
- 42:59
- Yes, yes. Yeah, and it's an aside, but it's necessary to point this out, too, that today
- 43:05
- Asians and some Hispanics are considered as white adjacent. Yes.
- 43:10
- Meaning if they accomplish similar things to whites, then they are as accomplished as whites using the white system, and they are not to be considered people of color because they're no longer viewed as oppressed because of their success.
- 43:24
- We can get into that a little bit more. But the situation with George Floyd was just a perfect storm that was necessary at a very volatile political moment during the presidential race as well.
- 43:35
- You've got to remember the entire storm that was circulating there. And Al Mohler writes a great book,
- 43:40
- The Gathering Storm, and points a lot of these things out in that book. So it's not just George Floyd's incident.
- 43:47
- That was just one thing that drew national attention to a situation of great disparity between two skin colors, one of oppressed and one of oppressor.
- 43:57
- And at that point, that fit the ideology of the woke movement, and off it went. And it's still building.
- 44:03
- It's not done yet, but it's still building. And you'll notice that a lot of our American culture is changing based on skin color as well.
- 44:12
- Now we've injected gender theory into the mix to a great extent because of skin color.
- 44:19
- And so there's a lot of back and forth about what this means, but nevertheless, this comes to church, okay?
- 44:27
- As Chris pointed out before in his illustration. It comes to school. It comes into your homes every night.
- 44:34
- See, the particular tenets of critical race ideology basically were fulfilled in that moment with George Floyd.
- 44:41
- And there are five basic tenets of critical race ideology. That is, systemic racism is the normal, everyday way of doing business in America.
- 44:48
- That's number one. So when you see a policeman doing that to a black person, you know that the normal, everyday way of doing business is being manifested.
- 44:58
- Number two, the dominant culture ruled by white is set up as a system that's comprehensive for the dominant culture, and one that benefits the dominant culture.
- 45:08
- So regardless, if you're a person of color and you achieve, the outcome is perceived as, well, you've achieved something that they let you achieve and they'll benefit from your achievement as well.
- 45:21
- So it's not because the people of color are benefiting, but the ideology says you're benefiting because A, they let you, and B, because they're getting something from your benefit.
- 45:30
- Thirdly, they say that only conscious efforts to focus on color and actions of discrimination towards others can make differences and dismantle the misery of racism.
- 45:41
- So you see that that explosive moment with Floyd led to the conscious actions of making significant differences toward the dismantling of racism, and the only way to dismantle it is to physically dismantle it.
- 45:56
- Number four, society has constructed false characteristics, and that's basically saying that race is a pseudo -characteristic of the social construct, and, you know, it's keeping people from success because of that.
- 46:10
- And the last one is racism is codified in American law, and it keeps people from color lower down on the totem pole, if you will, in all aspects of life.
- 46:20
- So in George Floyd, we had these five particular tenants, at least four of them, isolated four of them, explode in the moment
- 46:29
- George Floyd, I guess, if you say he was killed by the policemen, died at the knee of the policemen, his death was tragic, for sure.
- 46:40
- But CRT, critical race theory, the tenants were fulfilled in that moment, and it's pretty clear to see that.
- 46:47
- If you want the seven statements of advocates of CRT, you'll see then right where this has led, and that is, number one, that they deny
- 46:55
- MLK. He's persona non grata. Martin Luther King's idea of color blindness is now color mindfulness.
- 47:05
- Critical race theorists gave up on the possibility of even having universal values. This is why they can point to one particular group causing a problem when the other one is not causing the same problem just because of skin color being different.
- 47:18
- The third is they want to deconstruct and transform society. If you could ever use an event to move toward deconstructing, the
- 47:26
- George Floyd moment was it. And they oppose racial integration. They're much more into separatism, and we tried that all the way through the 50s and 60s and where did they get us?
- 47:37
- But now it's turned the other way because they're saying systemic whiteness is something that blacks do not want to integrate into.
- 47:46
- So the separatist aspects have to be fulfilled in order to remove and deconstruct whiteness so that everyone feels on the same level at the same time.
- 47:57
- Critical race theorists promote liberation. They want no cultural assimilation.
- 48:03
- They want basically to, quote, burn it down. And so they teach race consciousness toward that end, not race blindness.
- 48:11
- And so we have no objective truth, and you have people coming to church who claim to be woke or members of BLM and whose whiteness needs to be deconstructed, and they're sitting in the pews, and they're hearing of the supremacy of Jesus Christ and how the objective, the word of God is truth, and they're sitting there with an ideology that says there's no such thing as objective truth, and by the way,
- 48:37
- Christ is a white man's God. His white supremacy throughout all of Judeo -Christianity, it's kind of white, so why should
- 48:44
- I worship that God? And yet they're sitting in the pews with this. And you asked me earlier,
- 48:50
- Chris, why I was so intent on moving forward with this.
- 48:56
- It was because I saw this coming into the church. Now, do you see acceptance by professedly
- 49:05
- Christian liberal blacks as a reason why very often,
- 49:12
- I have to be very careful because there are multitudes of biblically faithful, truly regenerate black people.
- 49:20
- Absolutely. But at the same time, the black church at large, especially when it comes to some of the most highly populated liberal denominations, have diminished, at least in their teachings, obviously nobody can diminish
- 49:38
- Jesus Christ, but in their teachings they've diminished Christ to being less than God.
- 49:47
- In fact, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. did not believe, great teacher, et cetera.
- 49:55
- Is this idea of attributing a non -black man with deity a part of the reason why there are professed
- 50:10
- Christians, and I emphasize the word professed Christians in the black community in liberal denominations that have abandoned the deity of Christ as a vital concept in teaching of Christianity?
- 50:32
- Yes. In fact, those folks that do not belong to the faith, there are many writers out there, and I won't mention their names, but there are many that are saying that being woke and being a member of the
- 50:46
- Tenets, the followers of the Tenets of Seer, that those two together form their own religion.
- 50:53
- And John McWhorter writes about that, and he's very prolific toward that. He says that being woke is a religion, and from that religion you get these particular diminutions of the typical white
- 51:05
- God, if you will. But the problem comes with this, in that whether the gospel is true for all people or just white people.
- 51:14
- And if you look around the world, it's quickly discovered that people of all races, colors, backgrounds come to Christ, and they don't come to a skin color, they come to a
- 51:24
- God in the flesh. Amen, and we've got to pick up right where you left off there. Don't forget that point. It's an excellent point.
- 51:30
- We have to go to our midway break right now, and please be patient with us. It's the longer than normal break in the middle of the show, because Grace Life Radio, 90 .1
- 51:39
- FM in Lake City, Florida, requires of us a longer break in the middle of the show so that they can localize this program geographically to Lake City, Florida.
- 51:48
- While they do that, we air our globally heard commercials, so please use this time wisely and respond to as many of our advertisers as you can.
- 51:57
- And when you can't financially respond to them by buying their products or using their services, please at the very least respond to our advertisers by thanking them for sponsoring this show, if indeed you love the show and are grateful there are people and organizations sharing the wealth that God has blessed them with with us, so that we can remain on the air.
- 52:20
- So please thank our advertisers and send in your questions to Ernie Zara, to Chris Arnsen at gmail .com.

- It is much more than an exposition of the Larger Catechism. It is a thoroughly researched work that utilizes biblical exegesis as well as historical and systematic theology.

- As host of Iron Sharpens Iron Radio, I frequently get requests from listeners for church recommendations.
- 57:56
- The church I've been strongly recommending as far back as the 1980s is Grace Covenant Baptist Church in Flemington, New Jersey, pastored by Alan Dunn.
- 58:06
- Grace Covenant Baptist Church believes it's God's prerogative to determine how he shall be worshipped, and how he shall be represented in the world.
- 58:14
- They believe churches need to turn to the Bible to discover what to include in worship, and how to worship
- 58:20
- God in spirit and truth. Grace Covenant Baptist Church endeavors to maintain a
- 58:26
- God -centered focus. Reading, preaching, and hearing the Word of God, singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, baptism, and communion are the scriptural elements of their corporate worship, performed with faith, joy, and sobriety.

- Before I return to my guest, Dr. Ernie Zara, about his very vital book
- 01:05:18
- From Character to Color, The Impact of Critical Race Theory on American Education, we just have some important announcements to make.
- 01:05:27
- First of all, if you love this show and you don't want it to disappear, I'm urging you, please, will you go to ironsharpensironradio .com,

- and put advertising in the subject line. We are in urgent need of your advertising dollars as well as your donations.
- 01:06:17
- Please remember, as I try to remember to warn you every day, please do not cut into your regular giving that you are accustomed to putting aside for your local church where you are a member in order to give us a gift.
- 01:06:34
- Please don't do that. Don't give your own church less money in order to bless us financially. Also, do not give us a financial gift.
- 01:06:43
- If you're really struggling to survive and make ends meet, wait until you are more financially stable and back on your feet before you send us a gift.
- 01:06:51
- Those two things are commands of God in the Bible, providing for your church and providing for your family.
- 01:06:57
- Providing for my radio show is obviously not a command of God. But if you do love this show, you don't want it to disappear, you have extra money collecting interest in the bank, you have extra money for benevolent, recreational, and trivial matters, please, if you don't want us to go away, send us a gift from out of that money.

- Please, there are tens of thousands of you who download this program every month and never give.
- 01:07:24
- And I'm just urging you, please, if you don't want us to go away, please send us a gift if you are capable.
- 01:07:31
- We really need it. Also, if you're not a member of a solid, Christ -honoring, biblically faithful church, no matter where on the planet
- 01:07:40
- Earth you live, I have extensive lists spanning the globe and have helped many people in our audience find churches.
- 01:07:46
- Sometimes even within a few minutes of where they live in all parts of the world. So please, if you are not with a church home that's biblically faithful, send me an email to chrisarnson at gmail .com
- 01:07:59
- and put I need a church in the subject line. That's also the email address where you can send in a question to Dr.
- 01:08:06
- Ernie Zara about critical race theory and all things affiliated with it.
- 01:08:11
- That's chrisarnson at gmail .com. Give us a first name at least, city and state, and country of residence. You were saying right before the midway break that people of all ethnicities and skin colors and melanin contents are drawn to Christ and they're not being drawn to a skin color.
- 01:08:29
- They're being drawn to God in the flesh, the only perfect sacrifice on Calvary's cross for the sins of man.
- 01:08:38
- Yes, that's exactly right. And could you imagine a religion that says, based on an external, we are better people than everyone else.
- 01:08:49
- Well, now you've got something that smacks of history that we fought so hard and with so much precious treasure and blood to alleviate from the world.
- 01:09:00
- We do not need to be told that an external is a point of separation between God and man here.
- 01:09:07
- It's about the internal. Now, Galatians 3, there's neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male or female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
- 01:09:19
- Regardless of your condition or your divine appointed identity, you're in Christ.
- 01:09:25
- There's no point of difference in Christ. So there is no God in the skin color.
- 01:09:33
- There's God in the flesh. There is no black, no white God. There's God, the
- 01:09:38
- God of all races, the God of all people, the one who died for all, not just for white people.
- 01:09:44
- Christ is supreme. And when someone accuses me of being a racist because I talk about issues like this,
- 01:09:49
- Chris, I just say, I'm a Christ supremacist. And if you're a believer and you're not, the problem probably lies with you because if you're making skin color supreme over Christ, then we see that you have made something of the self more important than God in the flesh.
- 01:10:07
- In fact, if there's no objective truth, if there is no Christ, no John 14, 6, the way, the truth, and the life, and no one comes to the
- 01:10:16
- Father but through me, if that's not real, then can you see the problem then?
- 01:10:23
- Can you see without objective, absolute truth that anything goes?
- 01:10:30
- So now you see why skin color does work. When you diminish Christ in a church, you take him out of the deity, if you will, and diminish him.
- 01:10:38
- Then you have no longer an absolute truth to compare to. The Word is not true.
- 01:10:45
- The Word became flesh is not true. And now an objective truth becomes the subjective.
- 01:10:51
- And just by the statement by saying there is no objective truth, you have made an objective truth statement, which is the fallacy of that type of subjectivity.
- 01:11:02
- So when we talk about this issue, we're really talking about a worldview here. And I just want to say that when it comes to the worldviews, we need to have the lenses that are accurate, whether we see things through race or see things through Scripture.
- 01:11:18
- There are big differences. And yet, in our churches today, in our schools today, in our classrooms, and in the general public, we have people putting on lenses to see the world their way.
- 01:11:31
- And that is their truth. That is your truth. That is someone else's truth. But the bottom line comes down to, are you willing to die for your truth?
- 01:11:41
- I mean, that's an old apologetical question. Usually the people are more willing to die for something true than they are to die for a known lie.
- 01:11:51
- But the point here is, by comparing truths, you look at the Scripture and you compare the worldview, if you diminish the
- 01:12:00
- God and the flesh, now you've just got flesh. And so now you elevate flesh because you compete with God and you, the self, becomes the
- 01:12:10
- God of your flesh. So it's an insidious worldview. It is a non -Christian worldview that people come to church and actually believe that their external skin color is something that's more important than the internal converted heart through Christ.
- 01:12:28
- And that's where pastors need to do a much better job in articulating what actually goes on in you as a believer and why believing in woke ideology and critical race theory are not compatible for a
- 01:12:40
- Christian worldview. And we have an anonymous listener who says,
- 01:12:47
- I'm remaining anonymous because I'm a member of a church. Although it is theologically very sound, they remain nearly completely silent.
- 01:12:58
- Not that they affirm them or promote them, but they are very passive about them.
- 01:13:03
- And I have been even told by members of leadership that they believe it is nothing more than a passing fad and they don't want to waste their time from the pulpit to address it because the gospel is such a primary.
- 01:13:17
- Current issues that face us, the newspapers, magazines, and television fade away.
- 01:13:23
- My question is, how do I really articulate to the leaders of this church how deadly dangerous these issues are?
- 01:13:36
- It's just mystifying to me how they can be so nonchalant about these very serious, not only heretical issues, but issues that are destroying the minds and souls of...
- 01:13:50
- Excuse me. Well, the first thing I would think here is that they're... because they don't want to be labeled as...
- 01:13:56
- they're not sure how to handle it. To say it's a passing fad, to allow any ideology just to circle within the church body without being addressed is dangerous territory, in my opinion.
- 01:14:10
- It is like dealing with some kind of viral thing in the church and just saying, oh, I'll get over it eventually, just hang in there.
- 01:14:17
- You need, as a church, the church has to either be a leader in culture or it's going to be a follower.
- 01:14:23
- And we have been following far too long in culture. We've followed so long that we've given up Judeo -Christian values, given up the schools, we've given up God in the school, we've given up prayer and Bible reading, we've given up Bible clubs, we've given up all kinds of things to the woke ideology and to the far left.
- 01:14:40
- And they're not going to give that up at all without a fight. We just basically rolled over. Now, to address the particular question, the left would say, in this case, silence is violence.
- 01:14:51
- Now, I'm not talking specific physical violence here, okay, within the church, but what I'm saying though is there's something that's taking place within the body of Christ that if we're silent about will not just go away.
- 01:15:03
- But when other questions come up in culture that are considered fads, they won't address those either. I think they're just fearful of being called racist.
- 01:15:12
- I will tell you, this is not merely a fad, this is a worldview. This is a belief system.
- 01:15:20
- This is a we versus they time and this is a moment for the gospel to transcend those differences.
- 01:15:26
- If we don't actively take that gospel to that level of transcendence of the differences, then we have marginalization that's going to continue.
- 01:15:34
- We're going to have children in school being called ridiculed as oppressed or oppressors. We're going to have people separated by their skin color.
- 01:15:42
- We're going to have people marginalized and we're going to have our political culture basically go a different direction than what we know it to be.
- 01:15:50
- So what we have here is a way around that is to say, look, leadership says this, but what do the people say in the pews?
- 01:16:00
- And if we could do a survey of the people in the pews as to how many times they've been called racist or their children have been called racist or critical race theory is an issue in the school for them or they have been told that their gender is fluid, whatever the fad in their minds is from the leadership end, if you could survey the people in the pews and talk to the community, then you're probably a different result.
- 01:16:25
- And one more point. If the church were to reach out into the community and invite people in to hear a biblically centered message, a biblical worldview for the 21st century, and people would begin to place these ideologies not in the belief system, but in the garbage can, if you will, if they want to say it's a fad, fine.
- 01:16:49
- Now, it's an ideology? Yes. It's a part of a religious belief cult? Yes. But as all cults and religious beliefs go, which one should be outside the comparison of the scriptures for our body of Christ today?
- 01:17:02
- I think it's a mistake. I think they really, really should take a survey, and if they don't want to take a survey, then people should go individually to the pastor or staff and express their concerns about what they know is really happening in the community.
- 01:17:15
- The church shouldn't isolate from the community. The church should be reaching into the community to meet the needs, because I will tell you, if any of those parishioners or congregants or even weekly attenders work in the real world outside the church and come to church on Sunday, you can bet your bottom dollar those people are being affected and hearing this stuff every day of their work.
- 01:17:39
- So that's what I would recommend. Get out and see the real world for what it's saying coming to the church each week.
- 01:17:44
- And thank you, Anonymous, and guess what? You and all the other questioners who
- 01:17:51
- I failed to give this good news, you have won a free copy of this, a very from character to color the implication by my guest of the third, and I would strongly recognize you have told us that after you're finished reading the book that you give it or loan it at least to any of your elders who promises to read it.
- 01:18:15
- And also everybody whose name and mailing address so that Cumberland Valley Bible Book Service at no charge,
- 01:18:24
- Urban Design Radio, and I want to thank the very generous publishers of this book,
- 01:18:31
- Roman and Littlefield, for providing us with the copies, the limited number.
- 01:18:38
- Well, you have, in this very important chronicled or listed critical flaws.
- 01:18:46
- Could you go through some of the most important flaws? Sure. I'd be happy to do that.
- 01:18:52
- Yeah. And there's several of them that I've addressed in the book. I don't think it's a logical theory, quite frankly.
- 01:19:00
- I really don't. I think there's some inconsistencies in the logic here. For example, if I said to you that all whites are racist from birth, and a premise.
- 01:19:13
- And then my second premise were that whites are responsible for creating systemic racism. Then I conclude all whites and their systems are racist.
- 01:19:21
- That would be an inappropriate conclusion based on the premises, but I could prove anything from logic.
- 01:19:29
- Is it true that all whites are racist? If you deny that statement, their logic says that you're proving you're racist by your denial.
- 01:19:38
- Again, it's not logical. Not logical at all. So if I said to you that you are a whale, denying the fact that you're a whale means that you're a porcupine.
- 01:19:50
- And if you deny that, it means you're really a porcupine. It makes no sense logically here.
- 01:19:56
- So we have an illogical framework here for that to begin with. If you believe in logic specifically from an academic discipline, then the
- 01:20:06
- Motte and Bailey illogical statement or the doctrine fits here. I won't go through all of that.
- 01:20:11
- That's on pages 128, 127, 128 of my book. Let me talk about the inconsistency of this.
- 01:20:18
- You know, although they're not white, Asians are no longer considered people of color. Now, how illogical is that?
- 01:20:24
- When they once were people of color, they're no longer considered that based on critical race theory.
- 01:20:30
- Yeah, they're among the biggest targets of racism by the Ivy League schools.
- 01:20:36
- Exactly correct. And the reason they are is because they're no longer considered a minority by race.
- 01:20:43
- They're white adjacent. And because they're not people of color anymore, they are being discriminated against.
- 01:20:50
- And out here on the West Coast, there's some really fine people doing some fantastic work.
- 01:20:56
- Wenyuan Wu wrote a great treatise and a nice set of papers about this.
- 01:21:02
- She's involved in civil rights in California. We're friends. But it's funny because the large school district here in Washington State that I researched lumped
- 01:21:13
- Asians in with whites and measured their academic achievement against students of color. And guess what happened?
- 01:21:20
- They determined Asians are now white. Because they've achieved greater than people of color, they cannot be people of color.
- 01:21:30
- Isn't that so silly? And it's actually a racist statement. It's actually an anti -black ideology.
- 01:21:40
- Absolutely. To diminish that. And I often tease my black friends when we talk.
- 01:21:47
- And they call me, you know, a white supremacist. They joke around. And I say, well, you keep calling me that.
- 01:21:54
- I'm calling you someone who's black inferior. Because what you're saying to me is you're cutting yourself down by trying to lift me up.
- 01:22:01
- So let's just make ourselves equal here, especially in the faith. So we have a good time with that.
- 01:22:07
- But that doesn't get received too well out in the general public. But you can joke around when you know someone.
- 01:22:12
- Because if you continue to say something about one group, but at the same time, when you say that, diminish yourself,
- 01:22:19
- I hope you catch that. And that's what they're doing here. They're diminishing themselves, the people of color, by elevating others' color to the level of being white.
- 01:22:28
- So I wonder how long before it begins to cave. And lawsuits are all over the place about Asians being denied entrance into higher education.
- 01:22:36
- But another one of the flaws here is that, hey, we can correct past errors by committing precedent.
- 01:22:42
- For example, I can discriminate against you today based on what happened in the past, and then everything's fine.
- 01:22:51
- Well, that's theological. You would not want me to do that. I mean, think about, I'm going to discriminate against a six -year -old white girl in the classroom based on what happened 200 years ago to a black child.
- 01:23:03
- Because if I discriminate today, I can make up for the past discrimination. Well, I cannot create an error today to make up for past errors.
- 01:23:10
- Two errors are just both wrong. And that's a flaw. And the critical race theory leads to separatism, not unity.
- 01:23:18
- And in a political environment where we have people saying we're unifiers, we want to be one nation, to elongate the separatist ideology at the same time to say we're all
- 01:23:30
- Americans is just inconsistent. Because if you're not promoting unity, what are you promoting, is my question.
- 01:23:38
- Well, it's also inadequate for teacher training. That's a flaw. Because if you're training teachers to focus on people of color and to avoid other students, what you're doing is you are traumatizing the other students for the trauma that others had in the past.
- 01:23:52
- So again, you're back to traumatizing today based on trauma in the past to make up something out of a difference in equity for today.
- 01:24:00
- Because you feel that if they're seen more often in your classroom and maybe some other students are not, that might level the playing field.
- 01:24:09
- But what you don't realize with children, and I can speak from experience on this, is that you are traumatizing students and not selecting students.
- 01:24:20
- And if you have said in class that you're going to focus on this people group over the other people group, you are committing the highest act of racism.
- 01:24:27
- The child's heart doesn't know that. They just think that's mean and that's just wrong. And they're perfectly right in believing that.
- 01:24:34
- So teaching teachers to go ahead and focus on students of color over whites is not the way to unify a classroom.
- 01:24:43
- And to think that you can discriminate to alleviate discrimination, that's another flaw.
- 01:24:49
- It just doesn't work. What we have today, too, are a lot of shortcomings in this business.
- 01:24:56
- And I think if you were to look at the shortcomings in my book, I won't read them, but it basically presents that racism is everywhere.
- 01:25:07
- Every system, everywhere. And James Lindsay writes in his book,
- 01:25:12
- Cynical Theories, that that's presented as a fact. A fact. And the evidence is scant.
- 01:25:20
- I mean, historically, we have some evidence on that. But as you look at the writers today in sociology,
- 01:25:28
- Harvard professors, they basically said today, America is the least racist nation of all the nations on the face of the earth because of the opportunities and achievements of people of color in America.
- 01:25:40
- Sure, we're not perfect. But finding another country that has allowed the growth and progress that we have here in our schools, in our culture, in our athletics, in our entertainment, and across the board.
- 01:25:52
- Again, I'm not arguing that we're perfect. But what we do have here is a system that is changeable.
- 01:26:00
- We have laws that change. We have people who are, shall I say, representative of that change.
- 01:26:07
- What other system do you get that without overthrow of a government? You really don't. So we have laws in operation there.
- 01:26:14
- It's kind of hard to argue in favor of this little girl, let's say, the approach taken by this little girl comes home and says,
- 01:26:25
- Mommy, Mommy, my teacher said that we're racist. Is it true? And she mumbles on about something.
- 01:26:31
- And you ask her more about it. And she just feels like something's wrong with school.
- 01:26:36
- And it's only one day. And you sense this. And you eventually get out of your daughter. What happened?
- 01:26:42
- And she said that, Mommy, Mommy, my skin color makes me like I'm not really important to my teacher.
- 01:26:48
- And you start to say, Well, what's going on at school? Well, to make matters worse, the teacher wants to know what gender you are and what pronouns you're going to have for the school year.
- 01:26:58
- And the daughter begins to open up even more and tells the mom, She gave us a homework paper here, and I'm afraid to show it to you because it makes me feel uncomfortable.
- 01:27:06
- She asked me about my skin color, if I like boys or girls, and how about touching boys and girls in certain ways, if it's pleasurable or not.
- 01:27:13
- Mom, she even read a book to us about that. So your daughter eventually shows you all of this.
- 01:27:19
- You're livid. So you go to the school, and you're instructed by the administrators that the school is an inclusive school, has a full -time diversity equity inclusion advocate, and when asked why this person was hired, you're told from the administrators that students feel marginalized in schools, and they want them to feel as welcome as your daughter is.
- 01:27:40
- But when you just express that your daughter doesn't feel welcome, you're informed that's just the way things are going to be because of the marginalization and historical systemic racism of the
- 01:27:50
- United States. Then the following day, what happens, the teacher makes it a point to say she belongs to the
- 01:27:55
- LGBTQ movement. She's both mixed -race and an activist. And you ask what the teacher has done as protected.
- 01:28:04
- You find out the district protects the teacher for doing these things and allowing the
- 01:28:10
- DEI to be taught in the classroom. And you wonder to yourself, Chris, is this a fictional account?
- 01:28:16
- Did I just make this up? No, I did not. These things are happening all across the board.
- 01:28:22
- In fact, I could show you book after book after book in my own personal library that I purchased where it says that when babies are born, doctors make a guess as to whether it's a boy or a girl.
- 01:28:33
- Sometimes they guess right, and sometimes they guess wrong. Sometimes parents guess right, and sometimes parents guess wrong because only the boy or girl.
- 01:28:42
- And if you're not either of those, you could be something else because it's all about the choice you make as an individual.
- 01:28:49
- And if you're coming home with that worldview and that fluidity of your identity, imagine how you're going to come to terms as a little girl or a young person or a teenager when it hits the fire and you hear that Jesus Christ is saying yesterday, today, and forever.
- 01:29:06
- He's the way, the truth, and the life. And you've been told there is no objective truth.
- 01:29:11
- Do you see why I'm a bit passionate about bringing these things to the parents, the community, the schools, and the churches?
- 01:29:20
- Amen. We have another question. Christian in Western New York.
- 01:29:28
- Christian says, I know that they are well -meaning, and I understand where they're coming from, but many conservatives frustrate me because they keep repeating the mantra that there is no institutionalized racism in America.
- 01:29:47
- I believe there is, but it's racism against all non -black people.
- 01:29:54
- It's racism against Caucasians and Asians and Middle Easterns and even conservative blacks.
- 01:30:02
- How do you respond to that? Right. Christian, that's a great question. And Christian, we're not a colorblind society, even though we argued for that with Martin Luther King, and we're not colorblind because the fact that whites are selected and marginalized and the fact that whites are called racist shows you that we're not colorblind.
- 01:30:23
- And that goes to your understanding in terms of what you asked. But make sure you know this.
- 01:30:30
- To BLM and to the anti -racists today, blacks cannot be racist.
- 01:30:37
- Well, if they're conservative, though, they are, as he pointed out. They are labeled something.
- 01:30:45
- They're labeled... I've even heard conservative blacks called white supremacists, even though they're black.
- 01:30:55
- Right, right. But that's just a nice moniker for them to use as a shutdown conversation.
- 01:31:01
- What they really are saying, and I've read this more in the writers of anti -racism and the writers of BLM and Black Lives Matter movement, that those people are called basically skinfolk, not kinfolk.
- 01:31:16
- Huh. Yeah, and they're also called cloons, which is a combination of clan, for the
- 01:31:21
- Ku Klux Klan, and coon, the horrible pejorative term by white racists.
- 01:31:28
- That's correct. Yeah, and Larry Elder, who ran for governor of California, jokes about this.
- 01:31:34
- He says he was called the black face of white racism. Yes, I've heard him say that many times.
- 01:31:41
- Yeah, I know. It's funny. See, most of these names that are thrown around like that are meant to be showstoppers, conversation stoppers, meant to be canceling statements.
- 01:31:49
- What we need to do as Christians is we need to know the arguments that they're using, where the fallacies are, where the logic falls short, and deal with the name -calling straight up front.
- 01:31:58
- Get out of the way. Is that all you've got? I'm a racist? Okay, no, you're a racist. Now we're even. Now what's next?
- 01:32:04
- What bumper sticker do you want to apply to the situation? Now, if you can show me the institutions, from top to bottom, where they are racist, think it's racist against blacks or whites, show me the system by which the entire
- 01:32:19
- American jurisprudence system is based upon racism. Now, are there racial things that happen within systems?
- 01:32:29
- Absolutely. I would shudder to think that something that happens racially is a definition of racism across the board in all 140 million
- 01:32:40
- Americans. I mean, there are so many people with mixed marriages today, so many people in politics that are so in favor of BLM and anti -racism, but they're married to some of the opposite race, if you will.
- 01:32:54
- It makes no sense. The logic's not there. In other words, what they're saying is not really what they believe in practice.
- 01:33:02
- So what I'm telling folks here is, Christian particularly, is that stand your ground.
- 01:33:11
- If they call you names, don't go away. Don't be shy about it. If they call you a racist, say, okay, show me
- 01:33:19
- I'm a racist. Prove it to me. Where am I racist? Where's the system racist? Because if they're going to throw things around, make them prove it.
- 01:33:28
- It's almost like someone comes to your door, a member of a non -Christian cult or religion, and says, there's
- 01:33:33
- Jesus Christ, and not God. Okay, yes, he is. Well, that's basically what you've got between the BLM groups here fighting back and forth with others.
- 01:33:41
- Okay, prove it to me. Prove to me he's not God. Let's go through the scriptures, and you show me. Well, here's where Christians need to do the hard work.
- 01:33:49
- And here's where we cannot just rely on our pastors who may be shy from the pulpit because they don't want the reputation of having a racist church.
- 01:33:57
- Because that's the label they may accrue. So where people need to be trained to take the gospel message out, to deal with the tough questions that we have to deal with today, based on our skin color, based on our gender, based on the truth of the universe and science, the facts are on our side.
- 01:34:15
- So I think it's important that we don't just get into battle and battle back and forth with words.
- 01:34:21
- Point them to the truth, and here's the truth. The truth is there is a science.
- 01:34:26
- There is an objective. There is a God. There is a Jesus Christ. There is a supreme being, and he's not a white one.
- 01:34:35
- He's supreme over all creation. And if we were to point to those things that unify us as Christians as a starting point, let's say, between Christians, the rest of it begins to fall apart like scales from a sunburn because there's no way that your self -identified identity or self -identified truth for you today, lowercase t, is going to hold any water or compare to the truth of the universal
- 01:35:02
- God. There's where Christians, I think, and me sometimes included, we get involved in these conversations at lower levels of discussion rather than elevated to the
- 01:35:13
- Christ supremacist and let Christians see that we are under that supremacy.
- 01:35:19
- And so how does that flesh out in terms of the word of God and how we practice that between brothers and sisters in the church?
- 01:35:26
- And that message, too, if that was to be clear and loving and resonate in the public, that kind of church would be very attractive for people seeking the truth and just wandering around with lowercase truths in the community.
- 01:35:39
- Imagine a church that would be that enticing. And we have to go to our final break right now. By the way,

- 01:49:52
- We have Christopher in Amityville, Long Island, New York my hometown for most of my life and Christopher says don't you think that all of this is a wake up call that Christians should be either homeschooling their children or sending them to private
- 01:50:11
- Christian schools where they know this garbage is not being polluting their minds.
- 01:50:17
- Great question and there has been a response to that question by the millions of parents who have done just that and so where we have states that are now allowing school choice you are finding those parents exercising that choice and I fully support that.
- 01:50:36
- In addition to that I would liken this to athletics as well. If your children are in sports and it's a very bad environment but yet you want them in sports you should consider taking them out of those sports too because if you think that schooling is going to cause a problem then athletics will also cause a problem building a character that you don't want in your children.
- 01:50:58
- So as Christians we're always about thinking about the environment in which we place our children.
- 01:51:04
- Those children are ours and not the government's they're not the coaches, they're not the schools. They're ours.
- 01:51:09
- To give them up to another entity to train them in something that is a different ideology that is something that is much more problematic today than it was even then.
- 01:51:18
- So yes Christian I do believe that parents should if they have the wherewithal, the resources, the option to do that.
- 01:51:24
- I'm in favor of churches who don't have their own schools somehow providing funds for those needy parents who can't afford it but truly want that education for their child in a
- 01:51:36
- Christian school. I think churches should subsidize part of that if not all of that. So yeah there's a reason
- 01:51:42
- I think this is happening. I don't think it is happening in a vacuum. I think there's a bigger picture here.
- 01:51:47
- I think this neo -Marxist idea that has been replaced you know the social status now by the skin color is causing children to feel so traumatized that we need to make sure we remove them from the trauma or change the system altogether and I don't think the latter is going to happen anytime soon.
- 01:52:06
- We only have this one child that's going to grow up in that system and making mistakes all the way through that.
- 01:52:12
- I can assure you you'll lead to unbelieving children who are confused about many things in life including the truth of Jesus Christ.
- 01:52:20
- So yes I think that Christian schools and homeschools are a very valid alternative today and as a former public school teacher
- 01:52:27
- I can assure you that I'm hearing from teachers around the country that things are very different today than they were just two to three years ago.
- 01:52:36
- So yeah things are changing Christopher so yes I would recommend that. And you mentioned
- 01:52:41
- Marxism providentially. Grady in Asheboro, North Carolina is our final winner today of your book.
- 01:52:49
- Grady says, Greetings brothers. In reality doesn't CRT go back to the communist manifesto except instead of dividing the classes now they're trying to divide ethnicities.
- 01:52:59
- Yes of course. Ethnicities and or skin colors, race as well. And if you can use the model and substitute in place of social class then you could put anything in there and reinforce those differences and changes.
- 01:53:16
- So yes of course it's a neomarxist idea and it's based on no absolutes as well so you have three questions that you have to answer in your ideological worldview.
- 01:53:27
- Marxism answers in certain ways Biblical Christianity answers in certain ways BLM answers in certain ways any secular worldview answers in certain ways.
- 01:53:34
- Here are the three questions. Where do we come from and why are we here? And if you think about evolution you think about no purpose in life you're just here.
- 01:53:41
- Okay that's one worldview. Is anything right or wrong with the world? That's another question. And of course the utopian ideology here is really relevant on the one side.
- 01:53:51
- The more we struggle to become utopian the less we'll ever achieve it of course. And if so if there's something wrong or right with the world how can it be approved upon or fixed?
- 01:53:59
- The only worldview that answers these questions from a perspective of here and now through the eternal is the
- 01:54:07
- Biblical Judeo -Christian worldview. That's the only worldview that you have that answers all three of those questions and covers all three in detail.
- 01:54:16
- And we have a final question that we have time to squeeze in from Ted in Moundville, Alabama.
- 01:54:23
- I'm wondering if Dr. Zara can address a presupposition that has become and he uses a
- 01:54:29
- French word here that I can't pronounce de rigueur among the
- 01:54:34
- CRT crowd. The notion that only whites can be racist because they are members of the only race that has had the requisite power.
- 01:54:43
- I don't ever remember hearing this definition of racism prior to the 1990s. I wonder if he knows the origins of it.
- 01:54:54
- Well, the origin of it you can go back to Paulo Freire, you can go back to Derrick Bell you can go back to Gramsci Antonio Gramsci for some of that.
- 01:55:06
- Well, we have this issue of oppress an oppressor. What has happened with CRT and the race social justice advocates is they've applied the skin color to the oppressed and they've applied the skin color to the oppressor.
- 01:55:24
- In other words under the blanket of all critical theories race applies oppress, oppressor in that way.
- 01:55:33
- Much like you would have the gender application of male, female and patriarchy and all of that.
- 01:55:41
- So the idea is there way back into the 1800s of course with Marx but also through some of the
- 01:55:49
- European thinkers all the way through the Frankfurt School working its way all the way to Derrick Bell and into Harvard as well as Berkeley UCLA and the 80s and 90s where they have the specific name first mentioned really by Kimberly Crenshaw, CRT.
- 01:56:04
- So yeah, it is there. There's no doubt about that. But the fact that whites can't be oppressed is a fallacy because around the world, throughout history we see that people of all skin colors and all ethnicities have been oppressed and have been oppressors.
- 01:56:23
- Yeah, all they have to do is visit Appalachia. Exactly. And we're out of time. And we're out of time,
- 01:56:29
- I'm sorry. But we've got to get you back on the program. If anybody would like to purchase this book From Character to Color The Impact of Critical Race Theory on American Education by our guest
- 01:56:40
- Ernest J. Zara III Published by Roman and Littlefield Go to Cumberland Valley Bible Book Service CVBBS .com
- 01:56:49
- And they can order it for you if they do not have it in stock. I want to thank you so much, Ernie, for being a powerful guest.
- 01:56:56
- I want to thank everybody who listened. I want you all to always remember for the rest of your lives that Jesus Christ is a far greater
- 01:57:02
- Savior than you are a sinner. Amen. Thank you, Chris. I appreciate it.
- 01:57:08
- I'd be happy to join anyone at their church to spend some time talking about these issues for Saturday, Sunday, or whatever it is just to make a difference in the lives of people and to support them in the church.
