But we'll pretend everybody's here. The Lord intends to be here this morning. We're going to go through Luke chapter four, beginning in verse 30.
00:09
I'm gonna read that, then I'm gonna backtrack earlier in Luke and do some additional work that will come up before we actually get into this passage.
00:21
But here we go, Luke chapter four, verse 30. And he's talking about Jesus.
00:28
But he, passing through the midst of them, went his way and came down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and taught them on the
00:37
Sabbath days. And they were astonished at his doctrine, for his word was with power.
00:43
And in the synagogue, there was a man which had a spirit of an unclean devil and cried out with a loud voice, saying, let us alone, what have we to do with thee,
00:55
Jesus of Nazareth? Thou art come, art thou come to destroy us. I know thee, who thou art, the holy one of God.
01:06
And Jesus rebuked him, saying, hold thy peace and come out of him. And when the devil had thrown him in the midst, he came out of him and heard him not.
01:17
And they were all amazed and spake among themselves, saying, what a word is this, for with authority and power, he commandeth the unclean spirits, and they come out.
01:31
And the fame of him went out into every place of the country, round about. And he arose out of the synagogue and entered
01:39
Simon's house. And Simon's wife, Smother, was taken with a great fever.
01:46
And they besought him for her. And he stood over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her.
01:54
And immediately she arose and ministered unto them. Now, when the sun was setting, all they that had any sick with diverse diseases brought them unto him, and he lay his hands upon every one of them and healed them.
02:10
And the devils also came out of many, crying out, and saying, thou art Christ, the son of God.
02:17
And he, rebuking them, suffered them not to speak, for they knew he was
02:23
Christ. And when it was day, he departed and went into a desert place.
02:28
And the people sought him and came to destroy him and stayed him, that he should not depart from them.
02:37
And he said unto them, I must preach the kingdom of God to other cities also, for therefore am
02:45
I sent. And he preached in the synagogues of Galilee. And that concludes the reading of the last portion of Luke four.
02:55
Let us pray. Most gracious heavenly Father, thank you for this day and thank you for all the many blessings.
03:01
Thank you for all those that are attendants. Thank you for those that are homesick and afflicted.
03:10
Bless them and protect them as well because they are with us, whether they're here or whether they're at home. Thank you for giving us your son and the
03:21
Holy Spirit. And thank you most of all for providing for us the opportunity to worship you.
03:29
In Jesus' name we pray, amen. So last week we mentioned there are five things that Jesus did as part of his three year earthly ministry.
03:41
This morning I'd like to add two more and raise that number to seven. The fifth, sixth and seventh will be revealed later.
03:50
The first four we read in this passage just now.
03:57
Jesus will do the following. He will heal the sick, he will cast out demons, he will teach and he will preach.
04:07
Now, there was one thing that's next on my list, number five, that he did not do in the passage we just read, but he had already done it earlier in Luke four.
04:21
Or earlier in Luke in any case. Actually it was in Luke 4 .19, just a few verses before here.
04:28
And that was to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord. And at the appropriate time he will pay in full the sin debt of the elect.
04:40
Not the sin debt of everyone, only the sin debt of the elect. That is to say he will redeem the elect.
04:50
And I've got a question, when did that happen? When did he pay the sin debt and when were all the elect redeemed?
05:02
Okay. But we know that it was actually before time. We know that it was actually all in the works before, it was before time began.
05:11
But he did what he had to do when he died on the cross, when he was buried and when he raised from the dead.
05:18
At somewhere between the time he died on the cross and when he actually raised from the dead and ascended into heaven.
05:26
But you've got to kind of tag that on because he was still on the earth from the time he rose until he ascended.
05:34
During that time, everything he had to do was done. There's only one thing that will be left to be done by him with regard to the earth after he ascends.
05:46
Everything else is done by his surrogates, us.
05:53
Any other thing that is done on earth now has to be done by us through the help and influence of the
06:01
Holy Spirit. He will do some more later, but not now.
06:08
And what is that? He will assume his rightful role as king. And that would be at the beginning of the millennial kingdom and he will rule as king throughout the entire millennial kingdom.
06:23
And when was that? That's after Jesus' second coming. I went to Zechariah and wrote a portion down and highlighted part of it.
06:36
Zechariah 14, verse one. And I'm gonna skip some stuff and read some more because we got a lot to do today and I don't want to encroach too much on Brother Huber's time.
06:52
Oh, you have all the time you want. In fact, if you go until the day's normally ends, we'll be fine.
07:00
Well, I'm not gonna do that. But Zechariah 14, one, it says, behold, the day of the
07:06
Lord cometh and the spoil shall be divided in the midst of thee.
07:12
For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle. And then I skipped on down because it just describes the battle and what's happening to verse three.
07:20
And it says, then shall the Lord go forth and fight against those nations as when he fought in the day of battle.
07:29
And I underlined this one. And his feet shall stand in that day upon the Mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem.
07:36
Now that happens to be the exact same spot from whence he left. He left from the
07:42
Mount of Olives and when he returns and sets foot on the earth, it will be on the Mount of Olives.
07:48
I thought that was interesting. Now, I'm gonna begin verse 30, and I won't stay there long.
07:56
This is chapter four, verse 30. But he, Jesus, passing through the midst of them, went his way.
08:03
What we have here is a miraculous example of a miraculous escape.
08:10
The question is, why must he escape? And the answer is, his earthly mission is not yet complete.
08:18
This is early in his ministry. It's right at the very beginning of his ministry. He has just started preaching and teaching and healing and casting out demons.
08:29
He has just begun that. And already, there's a group of people trying to destroy him.
08:37
And so he's not ready to leave yet. He's not accomplished all of his mission yet.
08:46
And it is not time for him to change the venue. You remember, the earth will be changed.
08:52
From the time he is resurrected, when he returns and establishes the millennial kingdom, the millennial, the earth will already be changed somewhat.
09:04
It won't be totally changed, but it'll be changed to a degree. It will be a better earth than what we have now.
09:10
It will be equivalent to the earth at the time Adam and Eve were born. And if Adam and Eve were there, with one exception,
09:17
Satan will not be there for the entirety of it, but he will be let out at the end. So that's the change of venue that will happen.
09:26
His millennial reign on a restored earth. That's part of his earthly mission.
09:34
Okay. Verse 31. And he came down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and taught them on the
09:42
Sabbath days. So why did Jesus leave Nazareth to go down into Capernaum?
09:49
Well, one thing, he was kind of rejected by the Nazarenes or Nazarites, but why did he go to Capernaum?
09:56
What was his purpose in going there? I'm sorry? To teach and to preach.
10:02
Even though while he is there, he will cast out demons and he will heal the sick.
10:08
That's incidental things. The purpose of him going is to preach and teach.
10:15
Jesus accomplished all this in the approximately three years that passed between his baptism and his resurrection.
10:27
The period of time began in Luke 3, 21.
10:33
If you want to read that, Luke 3, 21. Now, when all the people were baptized, it came to pass that Jesus also being baptized and praying, the heaven opened and the
10:45
Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him and a voice from heaven which said, thou art my beloved son, in thee
10:55
I am well pleased. And Jesus himself was about 30 years old.
11:01
So that's when his ministry began on the earth as the
11:06
Messiah. And it ended after his crucifixion.
11:13
It ended, you can pick it up in Acts 1, verse 6.
11:22
Jesus has made himself available to his disciples as he walks around on the earth after he is resurrected for about 40 days.
11:32
And they follow him. And when they therefore will come together, they ask of him saying,
11:40
Lord, will at this time, will thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel?
11:46
So they're concerned, the Messiah is there. He's walking around about them. He has raised him, he has been raised from the dead.
11:56
He is the Messiah. They know he's the Messiah. One of the rules or roles of the
12:02
Messiah is to restore the kingdom of Israel. And they want to know, is it going to be now? So what did
12:09
Jesus tell them? Okay, kind of, no, it's not yet.
12:20
And then they say, well, when is it? And he says, you can't know yet. To read it, it says, will thou at this time restore again the kingdom of Israel?
12:29
And he said unto them, it is not for you to know the time or the season, which the father has put in his own power.
12:37
They ask him, is it gonna happen now? And he says, it's not for you to know. But ye shall receive power after the
12:45
Holy Ghost has come upon you. And ye shall be witnesses unto me, both in Jerusalem and in Judea and in Samaria and into the uttermost parts of the earth.
12:55
That's when the followers of Jesus were given the charge. It is you that will be the personages through which
13:04
God's work will be done until he returns and establishes his kingdom, which will not be now, for now it's you.
13:13
Okay? And when he had spoken these things, and while they beheld, he was taken up.
13:22
And a cloud received him out of their sight. And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven, as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel, which said, ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven?
13:40
This same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as you have seen him go into heaven.
13:49
He didn't add that, but then he implied, at that time, when he returns, that's when he will establish his thousand -year millennial kingdom.
14:04
Now, what was his earthly mission? His earthly mission was to do these things. Heal the sick, cast out demons, teach, and preach.
14:13
He's already done that. He's already done the fifth item on my list, proclaim the acceptable year of the
14:21
Lord. But he didn't do that in the passage I just read. He had already done that earlier.
14:30
These five have been effectively completed. We're now gonna look at the final two.
14:36
But before we look at the final two, we're gonna go back a little bit earlier in Luke, and then we're gonna go to Isaiah.
14:43
Luke 4, verse 18. This is Jesus speaking.
14:55
The spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to preach the gospel.
15:01
I highlighted that one. Preach the gospel to the poor. He has sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and the recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, and to preach the acceptable year of the
15:22
Lord. And that phrase is followed by a period.
15:28
Now, if you're in Luke reading now, John, are you in Luke? Yes, sir. What does it say after to preach the acceptable year of the
15:37
Lord? And he closed the book. And he closed the book.
15:42
He stopped in Luke. Sat down, he was done with that part of the message.
15:51
I want you to compare that to what is spoken in Isaiah 61, verse one.
15:59
It'll take you a second to get there. Isaiah 61, verse one. You're gonna see the same thing's happening until we come to the period, and Isaiah is gonna keep going.
16:15
The spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord hath appointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek.
16:24
He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound, to proclaim the acceptable year of the
16:38
Lord, comma. So there we have it.
16:44
Number three, to preach good tidings, to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, to open the prison to the bound, and five, to proclaim the acceptable year of the
16:58
Lord. Now, that point, when he says the acceptable year of the
17:04
Lord, marks the point where Jesus stopped reading in the synagogue. The sixth thing, and this is the one that is not included, is to pay in full the sin debt.
17:26
One of the things that Jesus will do, he will, let's read them again, preach good tidings, bind up the brokenhearted, proclaim liberty to the captives, open the prison to the bound, proclaim the acceptable year of the
17:39
Lord, all that was done, and pay in full the sin account.
17:47
The acceptable year of the Lord marks the point where Jesus stopped reading in the synagogue, indicating that the subsequent writing in the rest of the chapter awaits the second coming.
18:14
And he's saying to them, this day is the scripture fulfilled in you. That's right.
18:22
So he, it's, I mean, it's kind of unusual he was saying it's fulfilled in your ears.
18:28
Yeah, you heard it, you have heard it, you have witnessed it, you have seen it. All of this is done now.
18:34
Now, the payment in full of the sin debt. That's why he couldn't do that.
18:40
He couldn't say that now, because when was that done? He died. When he died, was buried, and resurrected.
18:49
That's why he stopped here, in mid -sentence, at the comma, to pay in full the sin debt of the elect, to redeem the elect.
19:01
When did that happen? At his death, burial, and resurrection. So we're going to go back and read
19:09
Isaiah 61, 1. Again, the first part of it.
19:16
It's not going to be far, and I'm just going to keep reading after I get there. And it will say this. The spirit of the
19:21
Lord is upon me because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek. He hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty of the captives, and the opening of prison to them that are bound, to proclaim the acceptable year of the
19:35
Lord. That's when he stopped. But he goes on. And the day of vengeance of our
19:41
God. As part of his deliverance of Israel, the
19:47
Lord will pour out his wrath on all those who oppose him. The day of vengeance of God.
19:56
To comfort all that mourn. The purpose of the
20:02
Lord's comfort of the mourners after centuries of suffering will be not only to comfort them, but to glorify himself.
20:14
Isaiah 60, 20 says this. The sun shall no more go down, neither shall thy moon withdraw itself from, for the
20:25
Lord shall be thine everlasting light, and the days of thy mourning shall be ended. Thy people also shall be all righteous.
20:33
They shall inherit the land forever. The branch of my planting, the work of my hands, that I may be glorified.
20:42
So that's why to appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness, that they may be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the
21:04
Lord, that he might be glorified. So Jesus is continuing on with the reason why the things are done in the way that they're done.
21:20
Okay, verse four. And they shall build the old waste.
21:27
They shall raise up the former desolations. They shall repair the waste cities, the desolations of many generations.
21:37
The rebuilding of Israel cities is part of God's future plan for the nation.
21:44
He didn't mention that in Luke, but he did mention it in Isaiah. And strangers shall stand and feed your flocks.
21:53
And the sons of aliens shall be your plowmen and your vine dressers. But ye, now who is
22:00
Isaiah talking about? The Jews. You shall be named priest of the
22:07
Lord. Men shall call you the ministers of our God, and you shall eat the riches of the
22:12
Gentiles, and in their glory shall ye boast yourselves.
22:20
Now, that's in fulfillment of a prophecy that he made way back in Exodus chapter 19, verse six.
22:30
I'm gonna read that to you, and you'll see that they missed out on what they should have done the first time.
22:37
Exodus 19, verse six. And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priest and a holy nation.
22:47
These are the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel. So the
22:56
Lord is giving the people the words that they're to speak to their offspring.
23:06
Israel will become, or will be, a kingdom of priest when, not in Exodus, but when
23:15
Christ establishes his kingdom. At that point, they will be the kingdom of priest and a holy nation, because the first time, they rejected it.
23:28
Now, in the meantime, Peter had something to say about this. He applies the same terminology to the church.
23:36
So before the Jews are reestablished as the kingdom of priest and a holy nation, the same thing will apply to the church.
23:50
Here's what Peter says in 1 Peter 2, nine. And he says, but ye, he's talking about the church.
24:00
But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a peculiar people.
24:11
He's again talking to the church. Isaiah was talking to Israel. Peter is talking to the church.
24:21
That ye should show forth the praises of him who has called you out of the darkness into his marvelous light.
24:30
That was Jesus speaking to the church through Peter.
24:36
What we just read was God speaking to Isaiah to the children of Israel.
24:48
Now, go to Isaiah 61, verse seven. I think that's just where we left off.
24:55
Isaiah 61, seven continues. For your shame, you shall have double.
25:03
They rejected Jesus at his first coming, but in the millennial kingdom, they're gonna have a double blessing.
25:15
For your shame, you shall have double. So Isaiah is telling them, even though you guys messed up and didn't do what you should have done, you're gonna get a double portion.
25:26
For confusion, they shall rejoice in their portion. Therefore, in their land, they shall possess double.
25:34
Everlasting joy shall be unto them. Israel will replace double portions of blessings to replace the double punishment of her exile.
25:47
She was exiled and she will be replaced.
25:55
A double replacement of blessings to replace the double punishment of her exile.
26:01
That will be in the millennial kingdom. Now, keep in mind that that exile continues even today.
26:07
They are still in exile. They won't be out of exile until Jesus returns and brings them in to the millennial kingdom.
26:18
For I, the God, the Lord, love judgment. I hate robbery for burnt offerings, and I will direct their work in truth.
26:27
I will make an everlasting covenant with them. This everlasting covenant that he has made with us already and he will make with the
26:35
Jews later is the new covenant. And their seed shall be known among the
26:40
Gentiles and their offspring among the people. And all that see them shall acknowledge them that they are the seed which the
26:49
Lord hath blessed. You wouldn't see that right now. You wouldn't see Israel right now as the seed that the
26:55
Lord had specially blessed, but in the millennial kingdom, you will. And I will greatly rejoice in the
27:01
Lord. My soul shall be joyful in my God, for he hath clothed me with garments of salvation.
27:08
He hath covered me with the robe of righteousness. As a bridegroom, decketh himself with ornaments, and as a bride, adorneth herself with jewels.
27:19
What you have here is a picture of the Old Testament, in the
27:24
Old Testament, of righteousness imputed to the Gentiles. And that's the essential heart of the new covenant.
27:34
When any sinner, when any sinner, Jew or Gentile, it doesn't make any difference.
27:41
When any penitent sinner recognizes that he cannot achieve his own righteousness by anything that he does, by his works, and he repents and he calls upon the mercy of God, the
27:56
Lord will cover him with his own divine righteousness by grace through his faith.
28:02
It doesn't mean that you have to be righteous. It means that God's righteousness will cover you.
28:07
And that's a good thing because none of us can be righteous. For as the earth bringeth forth her bud, and as the garden causes the things that are sown in it to spring forth, so the
28:19
Lord God will cause righteousness and praise to spring forth before all nations. Now that is our backtracking period.
28:28
We've looked at the way the Lord has blessed Israel, will bless
28:35
Israel more in the future, and how he has blessed the church. So we're back in Luke now,
28:41
Luke 4, verse 32, and we'll go faster from now on, I promise you.
28:48
We will almost get through. No, we will get through because I've been given permission by Brother Dave to get through.
28:56
And they were astonished at his doctrine, for his word was with power.
29:05
In King James, it's translated power in the New Testament.
29:11
In the American Standard Version, it's translated authority. It's actually either one.
29:17
Translated in some other versions is authority. The scribes quote each other to establish the authority of their teaching.
29:27
A person that a scribe will, to establish his authority, will quote someone else.
29:34
Jesus didn't quote anyone else. He was his own authority.
29:40
We know this from Matthew 28, 18. You don't have to read that. I'll go there, I'll read it.
29:46
And Jesus came and spake to them saying, all power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.
29:53
So who has power? Jesus has. Who gave it to him? God the
29:58
Father gave it to him. This matter of authority was a major issue between Jesus and the
30:04
Jews. One of the reasons the Jews rejected Jesus was because he called upon himself as the authority.
30:15
The Jews thought their authority was challenged. Verse 33, and in the synagogue, there was a man which had the spirit of an unclean devil and cried out with a loud voice.
30:32
This man was under the internal control of an unclean devil or a demon. And in all cases of demonization that Christ deals with, involved the actual indwelling of demons who totally controlled the bodies of the victims, even to the point of speaking through them.
30:55
We have that in Mark 5 and other places. It may cause derangement. We have that in John.
31:01
It may cause violence. We have that in Luke 8. Or the rendering of them mute, which we have in Mark 9, 17 through 22.
31:10
All of these things, the spirit, the unclean spirit is controlling the body of the person that's indwelled to such an extent that he can force all of these things upon them.
31:22
They have absolutely no control over what they're doing. And here's what this unclean demon said, or made the man that was possessed by the unclean spirit to say.
31:33
He said, let us alone. What have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth?
31:41
Art thou come to destroy us? Then they say this, it's interesting. I know thee who thou art, the
31:48
Holy One of God. So we know the demons know at least three things. They know that they're speaking to Jesus of Nazareth.
31:57
They know that he has the ability to destroy them. And they know he is the
32:03
Holy One of God. You can see it clearly. Let us alone.
32:09
What have we to do with thee? You notice he's speaking in the plural. There's many of them here. What have we to do with thee, thou
32:18
Jesus of Nazareth? Art thou come to destroy us? We know who thou art, the Holy One of God. And Jesus rebuked them saying, hold thy peace and come out of him.
32:29
And when the devil had thrown him in the midst, he came out of him and heard him not.
32:36
And we talked about that last week. Why do you think Jesus did not want the demons to speak of him?
32:48
Sir? His time was not yet. His time was not yet. It was not time for him to be put on the throne.
32:55
You're right about that. He wanted to be called the son of man for a while and then the son of God, yeah.
33:06
He didn't, that is correct.
33:24
And he didn't want his testimony, Jesus did not want his testimony blurred by the input of demonics.
33:37
He didn't want to rely on demons to present his word. He said, no, we can handle this ourselves.
33:47
And they, this is the people around that heard it, and they were all amazed and spake among themselves. What a word is this?
33:55
For with authority and power, he commanded the unclean spirits and they come out.
34:02
Even this early in his ministry, he had all authority and all power. Jesus had it all already.
34:10
Now he didn't use all of his heavenly resources.
34:16
He didn't use the resource that he was the son of God. He only reuses the resources that he was the son of man, totally indwelt by the
34:28
Holy Spirit. He had all the Holy Spirit in him now, but he was a man with the
34:34
Holy Spirit in him, totally unlike us, which are sometimes indwelt. We're always indwelt, but sometimes we ignore it and join the dark side.
34:44
Okay, all power and authority is given to me in heaven and in earth. And the fame of him went out into every place in the country roundabout.
34:55
Why did the fame go out? Because if he cast out demons, he spoke to them and they obeyed, and he could heal sicknesses.
35:05
Now this is the second time Luke has mentioned the fame of Jesus in Galilee. Earlier he had said, and Jesus returned in power of the
35:16
Spirit, the Spirit's in him, into Galilee, and there went out a fame of him throughout all the regions about, and he taught in their synagogues, being glorified of all.
35:28
Now he had already been rejected now in Nazareth, but now he is apparently still welcoming
35:34
Galilee. And he arose out of the synagogue, where he's been teaching, and entered into Simon's house.
35:43
And Simon's wife's mother was taken with a great fever, and they besought him for her.
35:51
Now I've got a question. Who is this Simon? This is Simon, who will be later called
35:58
Peter. That leaves a problem for the Roman Catholic Church.
36:05
What restriction do they have on their popes? Can't be married.
36:11
Who do they claim as their first pope? Peter. Peter. David. Peter was married. He had a mother -in -law, he had a wife and a mother.
36:22
Okay, so this is the same Peter, this is the same Simon that was later named Peter. So it's clear that Peter was married.
36:30
Even though we're given no details concerning his wife, this healing is mentioned in Matthew and in Mark.
36:39
In Mark it says, Mark 1 .30, it says, and forthwith they will come out of the synagogue.
36:45
They entered into the house of Simon and Andrew, and with James and John.
36:51
So it kind of ties down this Simon to the Simon the brother of Andrew.
36:57
So it tells you exactly what Simon he's talking about, just in case we couldn't figure it out from Luke. And along with him were
37:04
James and John. But Simon's wife's mother lay sick with fever, and anon they tell him of her.
37:12
And he came and took her by the hand and lifted her up, and immediately the fever left her, and she ministered unto them.
37:20
One of the commentators that I read talked about this passage as read in Luke, and in Luke it says, a great fever.
37:28
And so that was interesting because Luke was a physician. He knew the difference between a slight fever and a great fever.
37:36
With a great fever, you don't get up and help right away. But with a great fever, you lay in bed and recover. But this was not a normal recovery, was it?
37:44
This is recovery directed by Jesus Christ. Paul also implies that Peter had a wife.
37:52
In 1 Corinthians 9 .1, Paul says this. Am I not an apostle?
37:58
Am I not free? Have I not seen Jesus Christ our Lord? Are not ye my work in the
38:04
Lord? If I be not an apostle unto others yet, doubtlessly I am to you.
38:09
For the seal of my apostleship are you in the Lord. My answer to them that do examine me is this.
38:16
Have we not power to eat and drink? Have we not power to lead about a sister, a wife, as well as the other apostles, and as the brethren of the
38:25
Lord and of Cephas? Who's Cephas? That's Peter. And we have the power to lead what, a sister, a wife, as the other apostles did, as well as the brothers of the
38:42
Lord and Peter. So Paul also implies Peter had a wife. 39, and he stood over her and rebuked the fever.
38:52
And he left her, it left her. And immediately she rose and ministered unto them.
38:58
He didn't say she got well in a few days and helped them. He said he rebuked the fever, the fever left her, she got up immediately, arose and ministered to them.
39:08
Isn't that amazing? How did Jesus heal her? He rebuked the fever and it left.
39:15
That implies that Jesus has control over sickness as well as over demons. Verse 41, we'll be through just in a couple of seconds.
39:24
Plenty of time. Now when the sun was setting, all they that had any sick with diverse diseases brought them unto him, and he lay his hands on every one of them and healed them.
39:37
Now the Sabbath day has ended. The multitude is now free to travel. So they swarmed to Jesus, bringing their sick with them to be healed.
39:46
And Jesus heals them. And 41, demons also came out of many, crying out and saying, thou art
39:53
Christ, the son of God. And he rebuked them, suffering them not to speak for they knew he was
39:59
Christ. And again, it's the same reason. He didn't want the devil testifying of him. And when it was day, he departed and went into a desert place.
40:09
And the people saw him, saw him and came unto him and stayed him that he should not depart from him, from them.
40:17
Now, why was it necessary for him to go away into a desert place? Because he is not calling on his resources as the son of God.
40:28
He is calling on his resources as the son of man. What he has, is a life.
40:38
He has the indwelling Holy Spirit. And he sometimes has to get away from the crowd to get along with God, to restore himself before he can restore them.
40:53
And that's something that people that are in suffering need to understand that God is with you, but you've got to seek him out to get help from him.
41:07
Had he been the son of God? Well, he was the son of God, but had he chosen to avail himself of the resources as God, he wouldn't have had to gone into the desert to get away from the crowd, to recharge and to get close to God.
41:24
He was always close to God, but he had to get away from the crowd. And he said to them,
41:34
I must preach the kingdom of God to other cities also, for therefore am
41:40
I sent. So what was he sent to do? He did a lot of things.
41:46
He healed many, he cast out many devils, but his primary mission was to preach and teach.
41:54
And this will continue to be his primary focus until the time for his great atoning work comes.
42:01
That will be at the cross. And then finally, he will allow himself to be taken to the cross, where his death and resurrection will mark the end of his work as a natural man.
42:11
The payment in full of our sin debt and the acceptance of that payment by God the
42:18
Father and the redemption of the elect. Verse 44, and he preached in the synagogues of Galilee, but this is now early in his earthly ministry.
42:32
He continues to preach and teach in Galilee, both to the Jews and to the
42:39
Gentiles, to all that will hear him. And the ones that will hear him are the ones that were foreordained before time began to hear him.
42:51
Okay, I went through that reasonably fast and I actually am now encroaching on brother. So I'm gonna take a couple of seconds.
43:08
Do you have any questions or comments or anything to say, anyone? I think it's interesting that the demons recognized him, but not the people of the church.
43:22
The people of the church were not spiritually connected at all.
43:29
It was, so everybody that ever recognized him really, truly were demon possessed just about at that time.
43:44
And I think he didn't want them to be the ones to glorify
43:49
God. No. I mean, would you want demons to glorify God?
43:54
No, he wouldn't let them do that, would he? No, and he just did the miracle to bring them back to being whole, but he did not want to be connected as a person and hung out with demon people.
44:21
But he did allow those from whom the demons had been cast out. He did allow them to praise him.
44:29
Well, you know, many of them were not true believers.
44:47
It's like you said, there are fewer of those that are believers, and so fewer will recognize, and fewer will give the tasks that they recognize.
45:01
That's right. Many of them would not recognize him until after he had risen from the dead.
45:08
And this is the time period when he was still alive. And I think the ones that really only recognized him at this time were mainly some of those that he healed and most of the disciples, but they didn't quite understand it all either.
45:23
Still close to one another. Yeah. How confusing for everybody. I can see why in one way. They just did not believe that he was the son.
45:31
But they, yeah, that's right. But they did understand that he could heal the sick. And they did understand he could cast out demons.
45:39
They're gonna reject that later on and say, well, he cast out demons because he is one himself.
45:45
And they said, well, we won't go there. It's too long. Well, the media today would be saying, he speaks to demons, so he is one.
45:52
That's right. And that's what they were saying. He speaks to demons, so he is one.
45:58
And of course, we know that's not the case. And he didn't want that to be hanging out there over him.
