- Have you ever been watching a movie that you enjoyed as a kid, and now that you're an adult you look back and you say, man, I don't remember this movie having so much bad language? Hello Internet, it's Keith, and today I want to talk about movies, specifically movies I loved as a kid.
- 00:19
- For those of you who watch the channel, you know that I'm a huge fan of movies, in particular 1980s movies.
- 00:25
- The wall behind me is filled with movie posters, many of which came out around the 1980s.
- 00:30
- I actually don't watch a lot of newer movies, but instead I tend to re-watch older movies that I love.
- 00:36
- For me, watching a movie is like listening to a song.
- 00:39
- You don't re-listen to a song because you want to get something new, you re-listen to it because you enjoy it.
- 00:44
- And that's the way movies are for me.
- 00:45
- In fact, one of the things I did as a teenager was I used to record movies onto cassette tapes and I would listen to them while I was driving.
- 00:51
- Here's a fun fact, when I first met my wife and she opened up my tape case for the first time, she was surprised to see that there wasn't any music, just a bunch of movies I had recorded onto tapes.
- 01:01
- For all you fetuses out there born after the turn of the millennium, a tape case was a box which you kept in your car that you put your music into before your telephone became a complete entertainment system.
- 01:12
- So I drove around with a box of movies in my car.
- 01:15
- Again, this is just to reinforce the idea that I have always loved movies.
- 01:19
- And most of the movies I was introduced to as a child were on something called network television.
- 01:24
- Okay, this may surprise some of you, but TV used to be watched on a schedule which was determined by the people who owned the TV stations.
- 01:31
- We didn't have on demand or streaming, we had channels which were very limited in what content they were willing to produce and each station would determine what was on and at what time.
- 01:42
- It was an absolute nightmare.
- 01:44
- There was no binge watching, unless of course you had basic cable, then the only time you could binge watch anything was if some station like TBS ran an all day law and order marathon.
- 01:53
- But one of the positive things about watching movies on network television was something called censoring.
- 01:59
- When I was a kid, the rules governing what could be seen on network television were fairly rigid.
- 02:04
- Therefore, if I watched a movie like Ghostbusters, which I love, it wouldn't include Bill Murray calling Gozer a prehistoric B word.
- 02:12
- His expletive was censored.
- 02:14
- Editors would either change the word or they would add a beep sound.
- 02:18
- For instance, it's very possible that if you were a kid in the 80s that you may have thought John McClane's catchphrase in Die Hard was, Hippie by day, Ricky Martin.
- 02:27
- Full disclosure, I stole that joke from Crack.com.
- 02:30
- I want to give them the credit.
- 02:31
- I thought it was worthy of repeating.
- 02:33
- But as I got older and I started watching movies on VHS, DVD, Blu-ray, and now streaming, I realized I no longer had any options for censoring languages or scenes I didn't want to see.
- 02:43
- And I even said several years ago, why don't they just sell edited versions? I would pay good money to be able to watch some of my favorite movies without having to hear all the bad language or see anyone without their clothes on.
- 02:56
- This is especially important for my daughter who's autistic because while she is high functioning, she still deals with the issue called echolalia where she tends to repeat things on a loop that she hears.
- 03:06
- And if the thing she hears is a bad word, well, that's not good.
- 03:10
- Now I realize there are two arguments that people often bring into this conversation.
- 03:14
- First is the Christian argument which basically says, as a Christian we shouldn't want to watch any of these movies even with censoring because they're inherently bad.
- 03:21
- And then there's the non-Christian argument which says that movies are art and by censoring them you're ruining the artist's vision and therefore censoring them would be wrong.
- 03:29
- I disagree with both arguments.
- 03:31
- If taking out a few bad words allows my kids to enjoy Uncle Buck, then I'm all for it.
- 03:36
- You may disagree, and if so, feel free to light me up in the comments.
- 03:39
- In fact, since we're talking about comments, if you like my content, please take a moment to subscribe, leave a comment, and if you like this video specifically, please hit the thumbs up button.
- 03:50
- And if you don't like this video, please feel free to hit the thumbs down button twice.
- 03:55
- Some of you may be saying, well, what about VidAngel? VidAngel is a streaming service that offers the ability to tailor a movie to your own preferences regarding language and content.
- 04:04
- And I do use the service, it works well, but it has some limitations.
- 04:07
- It only connects to certain streaming platforms such as Netflix and Amazon, and currently there is no app on Roku devices, so you either have to use an Amazon Fire device or an Apple TV.
- 04:17
- But what I really wanted to share with you today is another company I was recently introduced to by a friend called Holy Moly Media.
- 04:24
- This company actually sells movies already edited for content, just like the ones that used to come on network TV.
- 04:30
- They're available on DVD, Blu-ray, and some even come as a digital media flash drive.
- 04:35
- Now in case you're wondering, this company is not sponsoring this video.
- 04:38
- I am not receiving any compensation for mentioning them.
- 04:41
- However, I did reach out to the owner to make sure they were okay with me talking about them, but I'm not doing this as a paid advertisement.
- 04:48
- I'm making this video because I wanted those of you who watch my channel to be aware that they exist, and that they have an extensive catalog of movies which can be purchased from their website.
- 04:57
- My friend at church introduced me to it, and he loves it, and I can assure you the movies do what they advertise, as I have all the Back to the Future movies as well as all the Ghostbusters movies.
- 05:06
- And when I watch them, it's like being brought back to being a kid at my grandmother's house watching network television.
- 05:11
- I don't have to worry about bad language, or obscene gestures, or people without their clothes on.
- 05:16
- I just get to enjoy a fun movie.
- 05:18
- So again, if you're like me, and you have a ton of movies from the past that you loved, and you'd like to enjoy them again, but you don't want to put up with any unsavory content, there are ways to get that network TV experience, taking out all the bad and leaving the stuff you enjoy.
- 05:33
- So what's your favorite movie from your youth that when you watch it again as an adult, you said, man, I don't remember that, put your favorite one in the comments below.
