Ephesians 4:17-5:21
Lifestyles of the Old and New
- 00:00
- Ephesians chapter 4 verse 17 to chapter 5 verse 21 hear the word of the
- 00:06
- Lord Now this I say and testify in the Lord that you must no longer walk as the
- 00:12
- Gentiles do in the futility of their minds They are darkened in their understanding Alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to their hardness of heart
- 00:22
- They have become callous and have given themselves up to sensuality greedy to practice every kind of impurity
- 00:27
- But that is not the way you learn Christ Assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him as the truth is in Jesus so put off your old self which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires and To be renewed in the spirit of your minds and to put on the new self
- 00:50
- Created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness Therefore having put away falsehood let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor for we are members one of another
- 01:02
- Be angry and do not sin Do not let the Sun go down on your anger and give no opportunity to the devil
- 01:10
- Let the thief no longer steal but rather let him labor Doing honest work with his own hands so that he may have something to share with anyone in need
- 01:20
- Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths But only such as is good for building up as fits the occasion that it may give grace
- 01:29
- To those who hear and do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption
- 01:36
- Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you along with all malice
- 01:43
- Be kind to one another Tender -hearted forgiving one another as God in Christ forgave you
- 01:51
- Therefore be imitators of God as beloved children and walk in love as Christ loved us and gave himself up For us a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God But sexual immorality and all impurity or covetousness must not even be named among you as is proper among saints
- 02:10
- Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking which are out of place, but instead let there be
- 02:17
- Thanksgiving For you may be sure of this that everyone who is sexually immoral or impure or who is covetous
- 02:24
- That is an idolater has no inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God Let no one deceive you with empty words for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience
- 02:35
- Therefore do not become partners with them for at one time you were darkness
- 02:41
- But now you are light in the Lord walk is children of light for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true and Try to discern what is pleasing to the
- 02:54
- Lord take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead Expose them for it is shameful even to speak of the things that they do in secret
- 03:03
- But when everything is exposed by the light it becomes visible for anything that becomes visible is light
- 03:10
- Therefore it says awake. Oh sleeper and arise from the dead and let and Christ will shine on you
- 03:17
- Look carefully then how you walk not as unwise but as wise Making the best use of the time because the days are evil
- 03:25
- Therefore do not be foolish But understand what the will of the Lord is and do not get drunk with wine for that is debauchery
- 03:32
- But be filled with the spirit Addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs singing and making melody to the
- 03:39
- Lord with your heart giving Thanks always and for everything to God the
- 03:45
- Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ Submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ May the
- 03:52
- Lord had his blessings to the reading of his Holy Word Well, what's your lifestyle
- 03:59
- Is it like the rich and famous? Or Maybe the country lifestyle or maybe the modern wired in lifestyle the active sports lifestyle
- 04:09
- Maybe the busy business lifestyle maybe the American or Southern the african -american lifestyle or the
- 04:18
- Chinese lifestyle. What's your lifestyle? You know what? I mean, right? but did you know just about 40 years ago you may not have understood the word the word didn't start to appear until the 1950s and didn't occur in a dictionary until 1977 but it turned out to be a very useful and popular new term by 1985 it was so widespread that it appeared in the popular
- 04:39
- TV show, but you Herbie remembers it lifestyles of the rich and famous Here in it is here in America hosted by an
- 04:47
- Australian man named Robin Leach who enthusiastically in every episode wishes our Champagne wishes and caviar dreams.
- 04:54
- That's about the best I can do for an Australian accent. Not very good Sorry is celebrated lifestyles, you know rich of the rich and famous, of course that many people envy today
- 05:03
- Many newspapers have an entire section entitled lifestyle You know You have the news section the sports section and the lifestyle section where you'll find there the movies the
- 05:13
- TV listings the articles on cooking and home design and decor relationships advice columns exercise
- 05:20
- Even religion that's all a matter of your chosen Lifestyle the assumption originally behind the word lifestyle is
- 05:29
- Individualistic and it's the style of my life Celebrating diversity if some people want to eat with chopsticks.
- 05:36
- Well, that's their style if I want to eat with forks Well, that's my style. Everything then is a matter of individual preferences as the actor
- 05:44
- Hugh Grant said I don't believe in truth I believe in style Now put like that immediately
- 05:50
- Christians should notice that something is wrong here Maybe not with a word but with the attitude of the assumptions behind it
- 05:56
- Sure, there are some things that are merely stylistic your choices. They're just of taste Maybe you like deep colors rich paints on your walls at home, or maybe you prefer pastels
- 06:09
- Enjoy your preferred style But there are are there matters of lifestyle they go beyond Individual preferences the step into the area of truth of right and wrong
- 06:25
- Are there some styles that are so bad? You can say that's wrong. There are so good.
- 06:31
- They say that's right Well, there's something step into the area of God Well, what's your lifestyle here?
- 06:38
- The Apostle Paul describes for us a Christians lifestyle in four parts first the change then the charges
- 06:47
- Then the children and finally the choice But four times in this passage
- 06:52
- Paul talks about walking. Do you notice that picking up from chapter 4 verse 1? We talked about that last week that we are to walk in a worthy manner here in verse 17
- 07:00
- We are no longer to walk is the Gentiles that is the pagan people the unconverted people around them Don't walk like them in a manner.
- 07:07
- I don't have a manner of life like them in chapter 4 verse 22 in chapter 5 verse 2 We're told to walk in love
- 07:15
- In chapter 5 verse 8 walk as Children of light and then finally chapter 5 verse 15.
- 07:22
- We are to look carefully how you Walk and what he calls walk or manner of life.
- 07:29
- We might now call today lifestyle first in chapter 4 verse 17 to 24 the change change
- 07:38
- Your lifestyle. It's not as though being a Christian is merely I'm changing what you believe a few doctrines.
- 07:43
- You'll say, okay I say yesterday's and it won't affect your lifestyle it will if you've been changed on the inside by being born born again that will transform your style of Life Paul testified to this starting verse 17, you know starts out very solidly
- 07:58
- I testify in the Lord like his hand is raised up and like he's giving evidence in court Changed by no longer living like the world and then he takes us down in five descending steps
- 08:11
- Step by step into the pit of the world's Lifestyle beginning with the most obvious the surface and then going down to the root
- 08:23
- First though the world's lifestyle is futile as is vain. It's it's empty
- 08:29
- There's nothing substantial there They're living for for nothing for illusions the things they think about are the things they are consumed with It's nothing
- 08:39
- You know, ironically many worldly people will often accuse Christians of being boring
- 08:46
- You know, they talk about theology. They come and they sit in church and listen to long sermons It's just so boring.
- 08:52
- They say but the reality is the world is boring The world is really boring. You think the things they think about all the time are consumed about You know, there are adults for example who are obsessed with finding
- 09:03
- Star Wars memorabilia. That's their lifestyle They're just I like to watch Star Wars some but I can't imagine spending my weekends going to search for Star Wars action figures
- 09:13
- I believe that's your life. That's so That's so empty. I Like sports, but surely we realize that it's a distraction.
- 09:21
- So what if Alabama wins another national championship, but even great is that is It's just another trophy they put on their shelf and next year
- 09:27
- Alabama will have to start all over again Sports is is fine entertainment But if you are up and down based on whether Carolina or Duke or state is winning
- 09:36
- Your life is really pretty empty You know some spend their life chasing dollars
- 09:43
- They can't spare a few hours on Sunday morning for God because they have to make up just a few more dollars
- 09:49
- That's their whole life Just a little more money That's empty.
- 09:54
- That's an empty life. Just live for making a little more money Now at the most meaningful the world's lifestyle will be consumed with Relationships finding that one special romance they say is the most important thing in life and they'll destroy that relationship with their selfishness and The end it is as Ecclesiastes.
- 10:15
- He says all vanity vanity a chasing after the wind In Greek the sentence continues in the verse 18 where we're told that the world's lifestyle is futile because Their minds are darkened
- 10:29
- They live for these Feudal things because they can't see How empty they really are?
- 10:37
- Their understanding of life is like our ability to see surroundings on a dark night with no with no lights the lights out
- 10:42
- You can't you can't see what's around you can't even see your hand in front your face They can't see that the things they're living for our illusions because they're living in the dark he goes even another layer down into the heart of the world's lifestyle their minds are darkened because This is the reason they're darkened because they are alienated as they cut off from the life of God in verse 18
- 11:05
- They are estranged from God. They don't have the life he gives and the light he gives so they're in the dark
- 11:12
- They can't see how they're living for illusions. The spiritual problem of being separated from God affects their ability to think clearly to see clearly
- 11:21
- What their life is about? Especially they can't think clearly about morals and spiritual issues sin in the heart affects reasoning in the mind and then the whole lifestyle
- 11:35
- The deeper you get into the world's lifestyle the more depraved it gets they are alienated Separated like we just saying from the life of God and so ignorant of God because they are their calloused literally word they're petrified in their hearts
- 11:54
- Insensitive to right and wrong to God and to holiness You'll find this if you try to reason with them about truth and goodness
- 12:02
- And the Lord it's like trying to stick a hypodermic needle into a rock. It just won't go We see this in the abortion debate the problem with many is it that they don't know that people are being killed by abortion
- 12:13
- The problem is that they don't care And if they really don't know that what's happening in abortion, it's because they don't care
- 12:20
- They don't care enough to really think through about the facts of what's happening here People don't care about what they are hard -hearted about the word translated callous at verse 19 can also be translated cease to care
- 12:31
- They've ceased to care. And so the world has a lifestyle that has ceased to care about life and justice and truth and God The result is that the fifth element of the world's lifestyle is that it has given itself over to to sensuality
- 12:48
- Now we've reached the bottom of this this pit of depravity People who live futile lives living only for now and themselves have no reason
- 12:59
- Not to live for every physical pleasure that they can get so they give themselves up To everything that feels good to them now, and that's sensuality
- 13:09
- That's why to the world the highest most persuasive argument for something for anything
- 13:16
- Is that it feels good? It's good to me It's my lifestyle. It's what I choose.
- 13:22
- And so people can say, okay Whatever. It's good for you. Then do what you feel if it feels good do it
- 13:27
- It's the world's morality and the result of that is He says lewdness
- 13:33
- So we have in our culture the prevalence of pornography the lifestyle of the world is given up to to work
- 13:39
- He says they work at it. They exert themselves Strenuously at every kind of impurity
- 13:46
- They're greedy for it They're like the greedy man who's never satisfied with what he has always wanting more a little something more
- 13:54
- And that's what drives the lifestyle of the world an insatiable thirst for more sensuality It's like a man lost at sea who drinks the seawater
- 14:02
- But is never able to quench his thirst But in verse 20 There's another great adversative a revolutionary change
- 14:11
- But that's the way they are Feudal they're empty given away to lewdness, but That's not the way you learned about Christ you didn't learn about Jesus by following your greed for impurity
- 14:28
- If you really have heard and were taught by Jesus Then he would have taught you the truth and that truth is that you need to change you need to change your lifestyle
- 14:38
- Like the way people this time of year Change our wardrobe. Maybe you had to change back
- 14:43
- Back to winter clothes some this week. You're changing your clothes So put off your winter clothes and get your summer clothes ready put off the old and put on the new
- 14:53
- Because you have been made new here. The old is the old way of life. It's futile.
- 14:58
- It's darkened. It's alienated. It's calloused It's abandoned itself to sensuality put that away
- 15:06
- It comes from your old self or your old man, that is what you were before You were born again before you were changed before that great
- 15:14
- Adversity of that great revolution. You were adopted a New lifestyle coming out of a new life that the old life was corrupt because of deceitful desires.
- 15:24
- He says Now have a new one, but the old ones corrupt because of deceitful notice the deceitful desires
- 15:34
- That's desires that said that you could be satisfied With just a little more money
- 15:41
- It's deceiving you can be satisfied with a new sexual experience or a new partner or something intoxicating
- 15:47
- It promises you Like a mirage on the horizon There it is.
- 15:53
- There's paradise Just a little bit ahead if I give in to this this greed this immorality
- 15:59
- Whatever it is. There it is It Promises you paradise if you will pursue these pleasures and if you give yourself into it
- 16:07
- You believe the deceit the illusion you'll find that it's always it's always Still on the horizon it never arrives
- 16:17
- It's deceiving you But now that there's a new you You should see the mirage
- 16:24
- For what it is. It's an illusion And so you put away that lifestyle and put on a new one be renewed in verse 23
- 16:30
- Be renewed in the spirit of your mind that is in the way you think so that you are no longer thinking like the world change your mind
- 16:38
- If your heart was changed has changed then you should start Changing the way you think and so changing the way you live the way you were taught by the world to think the way you
- 16:49
- Thought naturally as a carnal person, you know me and my pleasure are all that matters
- 16:54
- That should change put that old way off like your winter sweater and put on a new one
- 17:01
- Our lifestyle relies first on what God has done If God has made us new a new creation created to be like God truly righteous and holy if that's what
- 17:11
- God has done in You then your lifestyle should show it changed hearts produce change lifestyles
- 17:20
- Because that's the case comes the the charges in chapter 4 verse 25 to verse 32 the second part charges
- 17:30
- Commands that is what we are to do first. We're charged to put away the lie Lying is is part of the world's lifestyle
- 17:38
- If it thinks it can get an advantage by lying to you people will lie to you in this world That's the way the world is it shouldn't be part of our lifestyle.
- 17:45
- However, instead speak the truth with each other. He gives a reason Speak the truth with each other because We're members of each other
- 17:54
- One part of the body shouldn't lie to another part. The famous ancient preacher John Christendom said if the eye sees a serpent
- 18:02
- Does it deceive the foot? If the tongue tastes what is bitter Does it deceive the stomach?
- 18:10
- The world deceives because it thinks is disconnected from each other. We should tell the truth
- 18:17
- Because we know we're not We're charged to be angry But without sin quoting from Psalm 4 those who are given over to following their feelings are slaves of their anger
- 18:28
- But we're to be different. There is a right anger, especially anger at injustice, but it's difficult to handle like hot coals
- 18:37
- You can hold it maybe for a second but not for long without getting burned So let it expire with the sunlight if you don't if you see then it for hours and days
- 18:47
- You give Satan an open door into your life We're charged to no longer steal.
- 18:52
- Don't take what's not yours The world does that whenever there's an opportunity because they only care about themselves
- 18:58
- And they don't really believe in God who sees them even when no one else does but we're to be different rather than pilfering
- 19:04
- So like someone taking the office supplies or whatever opportunity they get work to labor Working and honest work with our own hands
- 19:13
- Every job is a way to serve God You don't have to be a preacher to be serving
- 19:20
- God It's one of some people seem to think if I get really serious about God I got to be a preacher a missionary something like that No, you are all called to work either in homemaking and teaching and health care restaurant work
- 19:31
- Medical care study retail editing landscaping
- 19:39
- Chemical engineering, whatever that is. I don't even know what that is. Whatever Joshua does you're all called to work computer
- 19:46
- Computer science or whatever the Christian lifestyle doesn't only mean we're going to church and prayer and Bibles Reading as important as those things are but work
- 19:57
- Right. It's not like get up and I do my devotions. It's I'm serving God now I gotta go and do my secular thing away from God.
- 20:04
- No Get up and do your devotions and then go serve God in your work Your work is a way to serve
- 20:11
- God and we're given a reason for our work in the second half of verse 28 So that here's a purpose statement
- 20:17
- You may have something to share with anyone in need The purpose of your working is it for you to have more and better things?
- 20:25
- You know a nicer house a nicer car luxurious vacations
- 20:31
- The purpose is so that you can notice there. He says it verse 28 give Giving is the reason for your job
- 20:41
- Now in the world that old lifestyle Work is for themselves
- 20:46
- It's so that they could have what they want They could have the stuff that they they desire
- 20:52
- That they're greedy for the bigger house the gadgets the vacations
- 20:57
- But that's the feudal the darkened the alienated the hard -hearted life given over to Sensuality and the new lifestyle coming out of a new creation.
- 21:06
- We work not for the weekend We work for what we can not not for what we can buy with our paycheck for ourselves
- 21:16
- But what we can give with it And one of Mary's friends in Singapore a businesswoman said that when she was young she wanted to be a successful in business
- 21:27
- So that she could support Christian ministries She was She was successful and we're sitting in this building because of it early on we got
- 21:37
- Because we were able to get this building and partly because of her and refurbish it she gave about sixty thousand dollars
- 21:43
- Altogether she had that money because she worked but she worked to give So if you've been taking well,
- 21:50
- I'll I'll really give one day maybe though But after I've taken care of myself upgraded our vehicles and got the house we've been wanting with the pool of the back gone on those vacations we've been planning gotten all the gadgets we want and then
- 22:03
- Then I'll give Maybe in my will When I'm dead if that should been your mentality you're still living the world's lifestyle
- 22:11
- The charge is to change here to to work to give
- 22:18
- The charge is to change our talk Our words should not be corrupting to others You know telling jokes that make light of sin that are sexually titillating just because it's funny or revile our leaders just because we don't like Their politics corrupting others by encouraging them to be arrogant rebels and scoffers and revilers instead our words
- 22:35
- Should build up others give them grace sometimes maybe by correcting them You know, sometimes you got to give grace by saying, you know, you're wrong
- 22:44
- You need to seek grace if they're puffed up and they need to be humbled To experience grace, but often it means encouraging them with grace corrupting talk you grieves the
- 22:55
- Holy Spirit Whom all true Christians are sealed with Seal means he keeps us preserves us for the final day
- 23:04
- When we're bought back from sin and death he holds us fast And we don't want the
- 23:11
- Holy Spirit to be saddened. You're grieved Can we see the personhood by the way of the Holy Spirit that he's not like a force?
- 23:18
- He's a person one of the persons of the Trinity. So he's grieved He's holding us.
- 23:23
- He's preserving us. And if we while being held by him, we're sinning in our talk
- 23:29
- That grieves him Finally we're charged in those lofty words in verses 31 and 32 to To let go of all the things of our old heart and old lifestyle that caused us to have bitterness even if we were deeply hurt and wrath and anger
- 23:47
- That's selfish, you know kind of consuming fire. How dare he or she treat me like that and clamor those lofty fits
- 23:57
- You're messing with the wrong one kind of attitude and slander like social media is full of Did it all be put away from you?
- 24:06
- Along with all malice that is wishing people harm Instead the charge the
- 24:12
- Jesus lifestyle Be kind to one another tender -hearted Forgiving one another as God in Christ forgave you
- 24:23
- God through what he did when he sent Jesus To live a perfect life taking the punishment for our sins
- 24:30
- God Forgave us that's what it means to forgive us in Christ.
- 24:36
- So now Can't we forgive each other when we wrong each other
- 24:43
- Again, like last week being a church doesn't mean we'll have a lack of offenses But it should mean we have what it takes to forgive each other because the father
- 24:53
- Gave us what it takes That's the charge to change we do it because we're children third part so children there's two kinds of children here, there's children of disobedience and children of God Starting in chapter 5 therefore that's because God in Christ forgave us
- 25:15
- Be imitators of God the Greek word there is where we get the word mimic from Mimic God copy
- 25:22
- God we copy him as beloved children in verse 1 We're loved by God and children of God and so like children often mimic their parents.
- 25:30
- We should mimic our father That's what guides our lifestyle above all more than Culture or upbringing that we are children of God Being children.
- 25:44
- We are to be marked by love in verse 2 as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us
- 25:49
- Now here's the model of our self -giving love. He is Christ sacrifice is first a work done for us here a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God Just like the sacrifices in Leviticus for that phrase comes from he's a fragrant offering pleasing to God Christ sacrifice for us, please
- 26:10
- God on our behalf So that he could be pleased with us His sacrifice takes away that alienation from God that is at the root of the world's lifestyle
- 26:21
- Remember, they're they're given over to sensuality. They're dark and they're hardened because they are separated, but we're not
- 26:29
- The fragrant offering of Christ has has cured that alienation so we have something different as the basis for our lifestyle a reconciled relationship reconciliation
- 26:41
- With the father so we are because of what Jesus did for us Beloved children of God and then having given us life our style of life
- 26:50
- Should follow Jesus's style The sacrificial and giving not driven by immediate self -centered pleasures
- 26:58
- But by the good of others, especially those other people for whom Jesus gave himself as a sacrifice that is the church if Jesus sacrificed himself for them
- 27:12
- So should we our lifestyle should be characterized by love not just by selfish perversions of love
- 27:20
- Like so some like sexual indulgence that often goes under the cover of love in verse 3 in our family
- 27:27
- That is the family of God we live differently from the world by being free of sexual immorality that sex outside of marriage and impurity like porn and Materialism living for wealth and houses and cars and expensive vacations those old lifestyles shouldn't be named
- 27:43
- Among us that is no one should be able to point to us the church and say well look they do the same thing
- 27:51
- Unlike the world We shouldn't have filthy language as foolish talk or dirty jokes. Those are out of place.
- 27:56
- They're not appropriate for people who are children of God In other words, we don't do that in this family
- 28:03
- It's not it's not our it's not the way we do things here when I was a small kid We visited my grandmother in Arkansas who repeatedly used the word.
- 28:10
- I heard I never heard at home a Word to refer to black people the n -word now on the ride back to Alabama I used that word echoing my grandmother and my father immediately
- 28:21
- Cut me off and forcefully said we do not use that word in this family
- 28:28
- We're a different family With a different lifestyle Some ways they talk in the world and other families.
- 28:35
- We don't do that here in this family our families talk here
- 28:41
- Paul says should be full of Thanksgiving Christ provides the life that changes our lifestyle
- 28:49
- Sometimes it it might be different for different people Sure, there are some things matters of taste matters of gifts
- 28:55
- But some things are true for all people beginning in verse 5 Paul makes clear that there are things
- 29:00
- Christ that Christians cannot live in and if someone does stay in that old lifestyle
- 29:09
- And that's a sign It's not because they're carnal Christians, you know, like they're a new man living an old lifestyle
- 29:18
- Somehow they could have the the doctrines of the life of the new and the style of the old
- 29:23
- No, it's because they are not a Christian at all look carefully at verse 5 for Because sexual immorality impurity covetousness, that's greed materialism shouldn't be among us at all because You may be sure of this
- 29:40
- Paul says it's the first five you may be sure of this What he's about to say is something you can be absolutely
- 29:47
- Certain of you can bank on it everyone Who is sexually immoral or impure or who is covetous
- 29:54
- Let's see. He loves the things the cash the car the houses the fancy clothes more than the true
- 30:00
- God like an idolater everyone Like that has no
- 30:07
- Inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God Nothing, you can be sure of that There's nothing in in Heaven for them
- 30:20
- When the kingdom of God comes, there's no place for them there They're not going to happen
- 30:27
- He bears down on the point in verse 6 let no one deceive you with empty words
- 30:33
- Any teaching that says you can live the old world's lifestyle. That's what you want
- 30:38
- You can stay in the sex outside of marriage and sexual morality or in living for things All that you can have that and still be a
- 30:45
- Christian Okay, you kind of disappointing your second ray, but you could still be a Christian Paul saying here No, let no one deceive you with empty words.
- 30:53
- They're empty words They're intent on deceiving people enticing them to sin and still think well, they're fine with God.
- 30:59
- He says that's false Don't be fooled by that. The reality is that it's because of those things that the wrath of God comes
- 31:08
- There's this present tense and it's continuing the wrath of God is now and will in the future be coming on the sons of disobedience
- 31:16
- That's who they are children of Disobedience their descendants of our first parents original sin
- 31:24
- They're disobeying God because that's the family they belong to There are false teachers who tell us that we can live like disobeying children while still being children of God They are deceiving
- 31:39
- So Paul said to verse 7 don't be don't be partners with them And it's for example in dating a marriage because they live a different lifestyle
- 31:48
- They walk in the dark and you in the light. How then can you let someone into your life? Who's in the dark?
- 31:54
- So in verse 8 live your lifestyle in the light put effort into knowing what pleases the
- 31:59
- Lord, especially by studying his word That's how you'll know God's will take no part in works of darkness that produce nothing good instead.
- 32:07
- He says Expose them and it's bring them out into the open and show what they are
- 32:14
- Rebuked them or denounced them in verse 11 Bring them out into the open to the to the light of truth
- 32:20
- To God's Word in the early 90s. I wrote an article for Mary's magazine and in Singapore impact exposing and satirizing really mocking the
- 32:31
- American TV show Beverly Hills 9 1 2 1 0 which is on TV there in Singapore And it was making immorality look cool
- 32:38
- When the American teacher Bill Gothard brought his Institute to basic life principles about the same time teaching to Singapore I interviewed him and showed him a copy of the magazine, you know, he was flipping through it and he saw that article about the lewd
- 32:52
- Beverly Hills 9 1 2 1 0 just skewered the article didn't have my name on it, so he didn't know that I wrote it and And but he said he looked at that and he said well we shouldn't print stuff like that We should just be positive
- 33:08
- Don't expose the unfruitful works of darkness, you know be more like Today say be more like Caleb always positive and encouraging which is fine for a radio station,
- 33:18
- I guess but Not for other things. I just kind of smiled because it's my article
- 33:24
- And by the way soon after the publication of that article the Singapore government banned the show That's Singapore, it's not
- 33:29
- America right in 2014 Bill Gothard was forced to resign because of sexual harassment I was totally unsurprised
- 33:39
- Now sure, it's a shame that we have to sometimes mention the immoral things that people do Maybe you prefer to be positive that's understandable, but sometimes you got to expose them
- 33:46
- It's a shame We have to do it people like Cardi B and her obscene songs of the filth of pornography and the newest fads of immorality
- 33:53
- But we have to bring them out to the light so that people can see it for what it is Become aware of their sin
- 34:00
- Awake from their spiritual death and feel the sunshine of the Son of God Themselves be transformed from sons of disobedience to a child of God.
- 34:09
- Remember there's two kinds of children the children of God children of disobedience
- 34:16
- Which are you we have the change to put away the old lifestyle the charge how to be new the children
- 34:27
- Disobedience and of God and finally the choice Starting at verse 15
- 34:34
- Paul gives us the choice Be careful how you walk Careful of of your lifestyle look carefully at it the choice.
- 34:43
- It can be either unwise like the world Or it could be wise if it's wise
- 34:50
- You make the best use of the time You don't waste your life just making money or living for the weekend
- 34:57
- You invest it in following Jesus in the kingdom of God Time is slipping away.
- 35:03
- Your life is flying by Make sure that you have a lifestyle that makes the most use of your time that uses it for the
- 35:12
- Lord in his church So don't be foolish understand God's will understand what it is and you understand that by studying his word
- 35:20
- Don't try to escape your life in intoxication. That's why people get drunk or high or whatever.
- 35:25
- They want to escape. They want to forget They think of only of now and their feelings and that is wastefulness.
- 35:34
- The problem isn't That is alcohol and all alcohol is bad. So that's why you should abstain from it
- 35:39
- He doesn't say that here doesn't say that Bible doesn't say that elsewhere The problem is that in drunkenness or getting high and any kind of intoxication you're wasting your life
- 35:48
- You're out of control you're just looking for an escape from reality
- 35:54
- Christians can't do the same thing. Maybe with ice cream or TV just watching
- 36:01
- Excessively or video games just just waste their life Instead be filled with a different spirit the
- 36:09
- Holy Spirit that that be your your high Lifting you above this world. I just sinking you beneath it
- 36:16
- Empowering you to overcome Not just to escape Seek to be pray to be be open to being filled with the

- Bible hymns of great theology and new inspiring spiritual songs giving thanks always and for everything

- 37:04
- Father in the name of the Lord Jesus Worshipping and producing an attitude of humility and service submitting to one another
- 37:12
- Revering Jesus you want to know what is the true manifestation of being filled with the Holy Spirit some people
- 37:17
- Christians debate that is it some Spiritual gift what's the true manifestation of being filled with the
- 37:23
- Holy Spirit? Well, actually it tells us right here. There it is You filled with the
- 37:28
- Holy Spirit. You are a happy worshiper Flowing worship just flowing from your heart grateful to the
- 37:36
- Father submitting to each other Bowing the knee and triumphantly confessing that Jesus is
- 37:44
- Lord. Well, here's your choice We have the lifestyle to the old and of the new
- 37:51
- The old is futile. It's empty. It's darkened.
- 37:56
- It's alienated It's calloused. It's given over itself to sensuality what it can feel for themselves
- 38:04
- Now the new Is created like God it's right
- 38:12
- Reconciled with him no longer separated. Holy Tender -hearted full full of light reconciled spiritual
- 38:25
- Like the Lord who loved us and gave himself for us. They are totally different You have to choose
- 38:34
- One or the other You cannot have the heart of the new and the habits of the old awake
