Systematic Theology (part 4)

00:02
Well, by the way, thank you for praying for my trip to Memphis. It was a profitable trip we I Spoke a couple times at contend a large youth conference and then did a couple live streaming shows
00:13
We recorded about eight no -compromise television shows verse by verse through Romans, and I'm glad to be back
00:21
After They canceled my flight from Newark to Memphis. They canceled my flight from Memphis to Atlanta So I really am glad to be back
00:30
Maybe the highlight of the trip though was yesterday morning at about 415 a driver came to pick me up to take me to the airport and it was a different driver and I was getting to know him a little bit and I told him that I was a
00:41
Bible teaching pastor and and he talked about a couple of churches that he's been to recently One the pastor it's a health wealth church and the pastor drives a
00:51
Rolls -Royce I found that was interesting said that's nothing compared to my Bentley. So And another church that he went to is a
01:01
Jehovah's Witness Church he said that was kind of nice because they're just Bible teaching and It was not a lot of hooping and holler and not a lot of holy roller stuff going on.
01:09
And and I said well So, you know if you say something badly about my wife I'm going to address that and if you say something poorly about Jesus Christ I will as well and I said in this
01:21
I thought this is my opportunity to preach to him I said I just think of that little illustration hand that acronym hand
01:28
I said, can you imagine Jesus Christ a real person? He really lived on this earth
01:33
H He had the honors of God when angels would fall down When people fall down before angels, they'd say get up don't worship me.
01:42
But when people worship Jesus, he accepted that worship H honors attributes that Jesus has the attributes of God.
01:50
He knows everything. He reads people's minds He knew Nicodemus's questions before it were even asked he has power
01:58
He has the attributes of God so he could walk on water could raise himself from the dead
02:04
I said and he has the names of God And of course, this is all going against his Jehovah's Witnesses a teaching and then
02:11
I could also talk about the greatness of Christ He has the honors of God the attributes got the names of God.
02:17
He's the Alpha and the Omega He's the first and last he's Savior King Lord and Then he does the deeds of God HAND he can forgive sins
02:32
Who can forgive sins but God alone and then I begin to talk to him this kind of Jesus Who's revealed in Scripture?
02:40
You can't just say well, I think I'll take him for hell insurance the Savior But I won't follow him as Lord because the honor that he receives demands lordship
02:49
The attributes that he has demands lordship the names that he has demand lordship and his deeds demand lordship
02:57
Friend you need to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ Then he looked at me and I took this as a good sign
03:05
It's gonna sound funny, but he said what's that name of that radio show you? So I texted him the link yesterday
03:14
And upon reflection I said to myself I am so glad that I have the final
03:21
Product I have the final fully revealed mind of God in Scripture I didn't have to go on intuition
03:29
I didn't have to say God tell me what to say to him in terms of new revelation I could say
03:34
God give me wisdom, of course, but God has spoken in these last days fully and Finally in the
03:43
Lord Jesus Christ and his apostolic Messengers and that is Hebrews 1, please turn there
03:48
God has spoken many times. Can you imagine what if God never spoke?
03:54
But since God is a speaking God since God wants to be known since God wants to be worshipped particularly
04:02
Precisely the way he wants to be known and worshipped He has revealed himself not just in nature, but also particularly in Scripture things that you could never figure out on your own things about God that you could never understand
04:17
But he's gladly told us because he wants us to know him To be known by him and to know him and here's the good thing when
04:26
God speaks He speaks clearly and he speaks sufficiently
04:33
In other words, God doesn't leave things out when we come to the Bible. We don't have to say well, it's not sufficient.
04:39
It's Deficient there are things in here that we wish we knew about that We don't understand about God's forgiveness and salvation on the contrary when
04:49
God speaks he speaks Sufficiently what he says is enough and he's spoken finally and fully in the
04:57
Lord Jesus Christ What we're going to do today is we're going to look at Hebrews chapter 1 1 and 2 again and Then ask the question since God has spoken fully and finally in Jesus What does that do when it comes to people who say they hear
05:12
God now? What about mysticism? What about subjectivism? What about those who who?
05:20
Somehow hear God audibly are in their heart now if God has spoken in these last days
05:27
Fully and finally in his son Then what about extra revelation?
05:33
What about the authority of Scripture? What about? Sola Scriptura and so that's what we're gonna look at today and next week
05:42
Lord willing We'll get into some of the attributes of Jesus and what he's done in verses three and four
05:50
Big picture remember Hebrews is about Jesus the priest There's an eternal transcendent
05:57
God and we are Finite creatures and we need a go -between.
06:03
We need an arbitrator. We need an umpire. We need a mediator We need an advocate and this whole book is about the priest
06:10
Christ Jesus Who's not only God but also man so he can be the perfect Mediator everything about Hebrews speaks of Jesus's superiority
06:27
And in this first section Jesus is superior over the prophets We'll get to the angels in a couple weeks
06:35
Hebrews 1 1 as you know, it says reading from the ESV Long ago at many times and in many ways
06:43
God spoke to our fathers by the prophets Remember what's happening here.
06:49
He's saying in the old days God spoke bit by bit piece by piece here a little there a little
06:58
Progressing in revelation adding more to what he wants us to know through a variety of different prophets and Through his spokespeople and through through Job and through Elijah through Daniel through Jonah That's the way he used to speak
07:14
In the past to our forefathers through the prophets in various ways That's the way he used to speak
07:21
Now the book of Hebrews the writer says in verse 2, but in these last days
07:27
You can study the last days nomenclature and it's it's between Jesus's first coming and second coming
07:33
So he came 2 ,000 years ago. He's gonna return some time. It'd be nice if he came back this year, wouldn't it?
07:40
It would solve a lot of my problems Lord come quickly. Honestly, that would just be so Wonderful in Between these two comings the first and the second it's called the last days
07:54
So God used to talk in a variety of different ways in a variety different manners from dreams to audibly Speaking through fire and a pillar of smoke and now in these days.
08:03
He speaks to his speaks to us through his son Do you notice in verse 2 again, but in these last days? The tense is different now.
08:10
He has spoken To completed its past it's not ongoing not getting new revelation even there has spoken to us wonderfully,
08:22
I'm glad he did by Not with a definite article but stressing quality.
08:28
He's spoken to us by his son I mean, it's one thing to have an errand boy or an errand girl
08:35
It's another thing to send your son send a daughter back in those days Of course we think of son
08:43
Here we have God Speaking the prophets. Do you notice there is a definite article son?
08:49
No definite article God has spoken And I think you even got a flicker of that from last week as we look at the transfiguration
08:57
Remember the father saying this is my beloved son Psalm 2 7 my chosen one.
09:03
Isaiah 42 1 hear him Deuteronomy chapter 18
09:09
Verse 15 God has spoken in these last days in his son and through his apostolic messengers see if you think
09:22
Peter Agrees with Hebrews as I read this portion from Acts. I don't want you to go there
09:28
I just want you to hear Peter preaching and tell me if you think Peter Had the same thoughts that the writer of Hebrews is discussing
09:38
While they clung to Peter and John all the people utterly astonished ran together to them in the portico called
09:44
Solomon's And when Peter saw it he addressed the people men of Israel.
09:49
Why do you wonder at this or why do you stare at us as? Though by our own power our piety we have made him walk
09:57
The God of Abraham the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob the God of our fathers Glorified his servant
10:03
Jesus whom you delivered over and denied in the presence of Pilate when he had decided to release him
10:09
But you denied the Holy and Righteous One and asked for a murderer to be granted to you
10:15
And you killed the author of life whom God raised from the dead To this we are witnesses and by his name by faith in his name has made this man strong Whom you see and know and the faith that is through Jesus has given the man this perfect Health in the presence of you all and now brothers
10:36
I know that you acted in ignorance as did your rulers But what God foretold by the mouth of the prophets that his
10:43
Christ would suffer he thus fulfilled repent therefore and turn back that your sins may be blotted out that the times of Refreshing may come from the presence of the
10:52
Lord and that he may send the Christ appointed for you Jesus whom heaven must receive until the time of restoring for all things which are about Which God spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets long ago.
11:05
Here we go verse 22 of Acts 3 Moses said The Lord God will raise up for you a prophet like me from your brothers
11:14
You shall listen to him in whatever he tells you and it shall be that every soul
11:20
Who does not listen to that? Prophet shall be destroyed from the people and all the prophets who have spoken from Samuel and those who came after him
11:30
Also proclaimed these days You are the sons of the prophets and of the covenant that God had made with your fathers
11:37
Saying to Abraham and in your offspring shall all the families of the earth be blessed
11:43
God having raised up a servant sent him first to you to bless you by turning every one of you from your wickedness
11:52
Peter knew the exact same thing that the writer of Hebrews knows That God is going to raise up there are all kinds of prophets in the past But the final prophet the one and only prophet the prophet who's his son.
12:06
He speaks Finally, they spoke in part. He speaks with completion. They started first He has the final word.
12:14
And so if he is the final word from God, then we must listen Now here's an implication from that truth
12:24
If God has spoken if these are the last days in which he has
12:30
Spoken if he's spoken finally and fully in Jesus and his apostles and the
12:35
Apostles are now gone and Jesus is in heaven Then the revelation from God is complete
12:45
The revelation from God is complete. How did God used to speak? Well here a little there a little he's now fully and finally
12:53
Spoken in his son and now we have after 90 AD. The canon is complete
12:59
The Apostles are gone. Jesus is in heaven Herman Bovink one of my favorite
13:06
Dutch reformed writers said in Christ God's revelation has been completed
13:13
He just basically stole Hebrews 1 and he now sounds profound because he's quoting scripture basically
13:19
A scripture is enough because Christ's work is enough redemption has been accomplished
13:28
Kevin de Young Christ's work and the scripture stand or fall together the
13:34
Sun's redemption and the Sun's revelation must both be sufficient and As such there is nothing more to be done and nothing more to be known about our salvation and our
13:44
Christian walk Revelation is complete and here this
13:49
Jesus through whom the truth is spoken sent out his Messengers the
13:54
Apostles and he said remember John 14 But the Helper the Holy Spirit whom the
14:00
Father will send in my name He will teach you Apostles all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you in These last days
14:09
God has spoken in and through his son alone period and then that son says by the way
14:14
Apostles The Father will help you know exactly what I want you to know What do we do when people come to us and say
14:24
I have a new revelation from God God is speaking to me. God told me something that's outside of Scripture When even 25 years before the canon is closed
14:34
Judah's writing the faith once delivered for the Saints. He's understanding.
14:40
This is coming to the end What do we do when people say
14:45
I have a revelation from you when we have Scripture? That's sufficient. This lends itself to a good question
14:56
How do we know truth? Well, there's a variety of different ways. You can find truth
15:02
One is rationalism That you use logic that you use reason alone to figure out what truth is
15:12
Rationalism logic and reason and use your mind. How do you find truth use your mind? There's another way to try to find truth
15:20
Empiricism I can find out truth by science by Experiments by testing by observation.
15:29
So we've got intellectual. We've got scientific There's another way that people try to find truth and it's called mysticism.
15:36
I have an extra rational experience and with rationalism appear empiricism and mysticism the final court of appeal the final judge on What's right?
15:49
And what's wrong is the person it's with people The arbiter of truth is the individual if you'll turn your
15:58
Bibles to 2nd Timothy chapter 3 I'd like to remind you because I need the reminder as well
16:04
That we need to go to revelation and we need to go to truth outside of us My appeal to you today is going to be keep trusting in the final revealed canon of Scripture Revelation from God it's outside of you.
16:19
Therefore. It's not tainted by sin at all not tainted by the fall We need information from the outside and Scripture is sufficient
16:26
Hebrews 1 1 and 1 2 should drive you to say I believe in sola scriptura
16:31
I believe in the sufficiency of Scripture if God speaks through the person of his Son that should be enough
16:37
That's the language God has spoken and he's spoken in these last days No other speaking no other
16:45
Revelation from God Sola scriptura found in 2nd
16:52
Timothy chapter 3 Now how many solas are there by the way? Some of you raise your head right away and gave me the the five
17:00
Saint symbol Well Yes for the Protestants, but for the general categories.
17:08
Let me give you a few these are kind of interesting sola ecclesia What's sola ecclesia?
17:15
Tradition magisterial authority and the Bible are equal to one another
17:21
Sola ecclesia is what the Roman Catholic Church would teach Magisterial tradition and the
17:27
Bible they're all equal and the final arbiter there of course is the church sola Ecclesia, there's prima scriptura
17:34
Prima scriptura we have first the scriptures then tradition Both having authority some
17:41
Catholics some Protestants some Eastern Eastern Orthodox believe that I don't know why I'm wanting to say a lot of Latin words today, but I think
17:48
I'm going to I just I Feel like I'm RC Sproul or something By the way, my life is complete.
17:55
I want you to know that not because I just spent six hours in the Newark Airport But one time
18:03
I was st. Andrews Church in Florida where RC Sproul's the pastor and it was a Wednesday night taping
18:08
And they brought some students in of which I was one and they brought the chalkboard out And I was sitting right there and RC Sproul was talking and he wrote a
18:17
Latin word on the chalkboard and I thought Take me to heaven now. I've seen it all Writing on the chalkboard
18:26
There's sola ecclesia. There's prima scriptura. There's regula fide Regula fide
18:31
Eastern Orthodox believe that the tradition is an infallible summary of Scripture passed on through the
18:37
Apostles There's solo scriptura Solo, that is the Bible's the sole authority for truth and for acting in a godly way and therefore tradition creeds catechisms teach us nothing basically
18:53
Fundamentalist usually subscribe to sola scriptura and we believe in sola Scriptura scriptures final.
19:00
I mean it just sounds like Hebrews 1 to me. It's the infallible authority for faith and practice
19:06
Now 2nd Timothy chapter 3 verse 15 as I work through this ask yourself these questions
19:12
Is scripture sufficient to save is scripture sufficient to sanctify?
19:18
Just God breathe these things out or on the flip side of scripture deficient in any way
19:25
Remember Paul's writing to a pastor to Timothy. How important is the
19:30
Bible and ministry? That's the context Picking it up in verse 15 of 2nd
19:37
Timothy 3 and How from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings?
19:44
Which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus? Many of you and I commend you as the pastor teach your children the
19:54
Bible from a little age That's exactly what they bid did back in those days
19:59
Rabbi, Judah said quote the boy of five years old ought to apply to the study of sacred scriptures teach your children the
20:07
Bible from infancy and of course we're talking about the Old Testament truth and the Messiah is seen of course in the
20:14
Old Testament and What do these Old Testament scriptures do they make you wise for salvation?
20:21
And remember the context instead of what the false teachers are teaching Timothy things that just gets you all involved in arguments that go nowhere
20:28
When you study the Old Testament scriptures, they can save your soul. You'll see that in Genesis the lamb was needed
20:37
In Exodus the lamb was needed Leviticus the lamb Substantial lamb was needed and then
20:45
Paul goes on to write in verse 16 all scripture What's he referring to there think before you answer all scripture?
21:01
Old Testament and first Timothy I would imagine and then by implication the rest of The Bible right but all scripture and he's already written first Timothy did
21:15
Paul know first Timothy was scripture when he wrote it Pretty did you address that in your bibliology section adventures in?
21:23
systematic theology odyssey The general context is that the
21:28
Old Testament is the only scripture that is written in the Old Testament Is the Old Testament all scripture, but of course first Timothy's included there that's just kind of a trick question
21:34
All scriptures breathed out ESV gets that right Doesn't just contain the word doesn't become the word.
21:43
It is the word Most people think we can't find that word breathed out. It's one
21:48
Greek word theophanous toss like a pneumic pneumatic drill God breathing we can't find that word outside the
21:56
Bible or in the Bible some people think Paul Under the Spirit of God made this word up scriptures.
22:02
God breathed Very words of Scripture are God's Word every part of Scripture is
22:08
God's Word of course in the original autographs. It's God's Word no error No failing and by the way if you're a pastor you need a tool kit
22:18
And what do you need to do? I mean, I think of first of all I can't believe you ever hired me 20 years ago 19 years ago
22:25
There are some 36 year old kid. What do you do when you how do you do ministry?
22:31
I remember when I first got here. We had some folks that wanted me to know Roberts rules of orders Roberts rule of order
22:38
I Second that what do you do? What what's the what's the manual and Paul is saying to Timothy?
22:46
Hey, you're out in the middle of nowhere in Asia at Ephesus, and here's the word here's your tool kit
22:52
You've got one sword in your scabbard, and it's the Word of God and by the way It's not just kind of like well.
22:58
You know humans wrote it and and it might be untrustworthy. This is God breathe This is divine inspiration
23:05
God breathe the air into the nostrils of Adam as it were and Breathe the
23:12
Holy Ghost into the disciples John 20 and here it's in Scripture What does the text not say all?
23:20
Human authors of Scripture are inspired people does it say that no the writings themselves are
23:27
God breathe and anything that comes from God It's got to be good for something and of course the text says it's profitable of course because God is doing it
23:37
It's therefore profitable and useful and valuable, and you can't say of the Old Testament are now any book of the
23:43
Bible Well Esther doesn't amount to much Nehemiah is not really too good a few of these other books are kind of worthless
23:49
Song of Solomon who cares No part is unprofitable, and what does this do?
23:56
What does the Bible do how great is the Word of God? for teaching Notice that word there in 2nd
24:03
Timothy. It tells us who God is what God requires and in the active sense the active teaching and The passive sense what is taught that is doctrine both are true
24:17
It helps us teach and it helps us know what to teach that is doctrine What else does
24:22
God's Word do the sufficient word? reproof I Failed to live up to what
24:29
God has required. I I see my sin I'm Convicted by the
24:35
Word of God ever read the Bible ever heard preaching and you go. I'm convicted I feel like I'm the only one in this room of a thousand people.
24:43
That's what the Bible does it convinces Try to convince people that they're sinful in this world today
24:50
Basically impossible until the Spirit of God attends through the Bible, and they are cut to the quick correction oh, that's
24:59
Wonderful he just doesn't slay us with reproof II he picks us up literally word correction is to stand up straight again to stand up straight again, and then lastly to train us in righteousness
25:15
Hey Timothy, you're parachuted in the middle of Ephesus in the middle of nowhere They're running around shouting for two hours great is
25:23
Diana of Ephesus Artemis of Ephesus and what do you have to work with? What's in your toolkit?
25:30
I? Mean for I'm getting better as the years go by but for a long time. I thought if only I had one Phillips screwdriver and one crescent wrench
25:37
I could fix about anything you need the right tools for the job, correct and Here's the right tool and and it teaches it corrects it reproves trains
25:53
Everything you need is there there's no deficiencies verse 17 That the man of God in order that the man of God in order that you
26:04
Timothy the pastor Of course it's good for ladies of course. It's good for laymen, but this is talking about ministry leaders man of God That's an
26:12
Old Testament term for preachers That the preacher may be complete equipped for every good work
26:23
That's sufficiency of Scripture Everything you need pastor you've got
26:30
You're capable for ministry sufficient for ministry adequate for ministry You're not just stuck out in the middle of nowhere with the crescent wrench.
26:39
You got to change an engine Can you change engines? You know the
26:52
Bible's pretty good, and it's pretty sufficient But we're not gonna know what to do with people's souls until 1900 years when
26:59
Freud comes along there's nothing defective in it
27:08
No deficiencies You know This is the 21st century and and we've made progress and we've made great strides and the
27:19
Bible used to be good for old Antiquated people, but it's not really needed for us anymore of course not
27:27
We believe in the doctrine of sola scriptura scriptures are sufficient Scriptures are adequate scriptures cover everything
27:36
There's nothing that you need to know in the world. That's not found in Scripture when it comes to salvation and godliness
27:44
Now here's the thing most Evangelicals would quickly say we disagree with people who are in the
27:51
Roman Catholic Church Because we believe in sola scriptura the Bible alone that was a great fight of the
27:57
Reformation and they believe in the Pope Traditions magisterium and we would see as Protestants that that would be wrong
28:07
When Pope Pius the ninth says at the first Vatican Council in 1870 I am tradition
28:13
We would see the error to that When Roman theologian
28:19
John Eck said scriptures are not authentic except by the authority of the church We would understand that would be incorrect
28:28
The index of forbidden books written by Pope Pius the fourth in 1559 said
28:34
Since experience teaches that if the reading of the Holy Bible in the vernacular is permitted generally without discrimination
28:41
More damage than advantage will result because of the boldness of men The judgment of the bishops and inquisitors is to serve as a guide in this regard
28:50
Bishops and inquisitors may in accord with the Council of the local priest and confessor Allow Catholic translations of the
28:57
Bible to be read by those of whom they realize that such reading will not lead to the detriment, but to the increase of faith and piety
29:04
The permission is to be given in writing Whoever reads or has such a translation in his possession
29:12
Talking about of the Bible without permission cannot be absolved from his sin until he has turned in his
29:19
Bible We would realize that actually
29:27
Pope was right in the sense that reading your Bible is dangerous Because those that really did became
29:33
Protestant evangelicals now see most of us would say we get it
29:41
We don't do primus scriptura scripture first then Tradition second, but where many
29:48
Christians many evangelical Christians fall short with the doctrine of sola scriptura
29:53
Is when it comes to the idea of mysticism? Subjective intuition and mysticism
30:01
Because it's the same argument with the Roman Catholic Church. We recognize Rome's primus scriptura
30:07
But we don't recognize our own Leading of the Holy Spirit through words may be audible.
30:13
Maybe not audible How can you avoid subjectivity and not have
30:20
God speaking you ultimately take priority over what the Bible teaches? And the answer has to be
30:26
Hebrews 1 1 & 2 in the doctrine of sola scriptura Everywhere I go.
30:34
I was asked a question a Q &A session a few days ago What's the biggest problem you see Mike in the evangelical church?
30:40
And I said the doctrine of mysticism Because what does mysticism do many things?
30:47
I'll tell you one it divides the church the haves they get mystic impressions and God talks with them and and they get these kind of things and Prophetic utterances and then the have -nots
31:04
Dallas seminary trained Jack Deere said in his book surprised by the power of the Spirit Today after years of practical experiences and intense study on the subject of God speaking
31:14
I am convinced that God doesn't deed speak apart from the Bible though Never in contradiction to it and he speaks to all of his children
31:22
Not just especially gifted prophetic people and he will speak to all of us in amazing detail
31:29
Now to be fair to Dallas seminary they would not ascribe to that position anymore But I'm not trying to say this is some crazy person on TBN or something.
31:39
Although they are crazy on TBN Sola scriptura would make me ask the question.
31:52
How can God still speak today? Friends if you believe in the canon of Scripture as closed 66 books of the
31:59
Bible if you believe the scriptures are infallible errant and sufficient and You believe you have the
32:05
Spirit of God to Illumine the scriptures and guide the church than you are.
32:12
Are you ready? You're a cessationist to some degree But you're on your way
32:21
Mysticism denies sola scriptura Denies the evangelical commitment to soul revelation found in Scripture outside of us
32:33
John Wimber power evangelism, maybe I needed this on the plane yesterday or in Newark a few days ago.
32:38
God revealed to John Wimber that There were some letters on a man's forehead
32:45
He wanted to evangelize this man and he saw letters on the man's head Distinct letters
32:51
Wimber said and the words on the man's head that God showed him distinctly were the words adultery
32:59
So God said to Wimber quote in Wimber's book God speaking allegedly Tell him if he doesn't turn from his adultery.
33:07
I'm going to take him Paul Cain Said that God appeared to him in the front seat of his car
33:15
I know that's not true because he would have Gotten a head -on collision because he would have been so frightened by the eternal
33:21
God in his front seat But he said if you really want the kind of intimate walk with me you profess to want
33:28
You must remember that I walk alone and that is why Paul Cain never married
33:35
It's not just the crazy TV preachers Bill Hybels in his book honest to God Here's what he says when he has his prayer journal out and if you have a prayer journal because you're praying for people great
33:46
But if you're hearing from God Allah Sarah young I'd take you back to Hebrews chapter 1, but here's what
33:52
Bible says in his book Lord you talk to your children all through history and you've said you're an unchangeable
33:59
God talk to me now. I'm Listening I'm open Friends, what's the problem when you say you talk all the way through history and you're an unchangeable
34:09
God So that means you should talk to me Because scripture says in the last days he speaks through his son.
34:14
He used to talk in a variety of ways, but this is how he speaks So he asked
34:20
God's questions and he gets impressions And he writes them down James Dobson Straight talk to men and their wives.
34:30
You would not think he was a charismatic a crazy charismatic Wild charismatic, but he was mystical
34:38
What's your point pastor Mike and all these things? I'm just telling you it's everywhere you go. It is everywhere you go
34:46
Dobson's dad was dying and he rushed to the hospital bed and God spoke to him according to James Dobson You are going to write a book for husbands and fathers based on the life of your dad
35:02
If scriptures were sufficient, I don't know why James Dobson just couldn't say I'm gonna miss my dad
35:08
He's dying I think I'll write a book Dobson said I experienced one of these quiet moments of awareness when
35:15
I knew the Lord had spoken If America is going to survive these incredible stresses and dangers it now faces
35:20
It will be because husbands and fathers again place their families at the highest level of their system of priorities
35:27
Reserving a portion of their time and energy for leadership within their home End quote you say
35:34
Mike the burden of proof is on you you prove to me that all these things didn't happen Friends, let's be nice.
35:41
It's nice to be nice and it's good to be good The burden of proof my friend is on you
35:48
The Bible teaches sola scriptura the Bible teaches that with an exclamation
35:56
You say well if God tells me something I'm first to see if it's in Scripture and see if it matches up Friends if he tells you something and you see that it's in Scripture and it's matches up.
36:06
He didn't need to say anything It's already in Scripture if anybody writes a book called how to listen to God You better run
36:16
Oh Charles Stanley how to listen to God. Here's his faulty premise
36:24
God never changes God used to speak. He must speak New Revelation today quote
36:32
Many people do not fully believe that God speaks today. I Mean, I I believe he speaks today, by the way
36:40
As my friend Justin Peter says if you'd like to hear God read your Bible if you'd like to hear God out loud read your Bible Out loud many people
36:51
Stanley said do not fully believe that God speaks today if we think we get direction only through Scripture Like you poor saps here at BBC Then we'll miss out on much of what
37:02
God has to share because he will speak so often through his spirit through circumstances and other people we must make absolutely certain that we're fully convinced and Persuaded that God does not that God does speak to us personally friends that deny sola scriptura and that makes the haves and the have -nots and that makes you look yearn for things and all of a
37:25
Sudden I say to myself. Yeah, but was that me? Was it my my bosom burning, but I'm affected by the fall
37:31
Why can't I just say you know what the just shall live by faith. I'm gonna walk by faith This is enough And if you think you're gonna want to do something then don't blame it on God don't say
37:39
God told you just go ahead and do it Stanley had a financial deal that he was gonna do and the
37:47
Spirit of God spoke to him quote the Spirit of God immediately spoke to Me and said don't answer that Cuz how much you want to pay for the property
37:54
God said tell him don't answer that Stanley said when
37:59
I say the Holy Spirit speaks I do not mean audibly rather he impresses his will in my spirit or my mind and I hear him in my inner being though Not audible the communication is precise nonetheless
38:11
How can Communication be precise if it's just a feeling in your mind
38:20
I'd been rather restless in my spirit and knew God was up to something but didn't know exactly what
38:25
Charles writes Then one night out of desperation. I cried out to God asking him to reveal his purpose
38:30
God replied quickly and bluntly. I'm going to move you. I said when in a split second the word
38:36
September flashed across my mind and immediately my burden was lifted in September Charles Stanley moved to Atlanta when you give the status of impressions and God speaking audibly or through your mind
39:00
The status of the Word of God You've now obliterate what the
39:05
Word of God in fact stands for And what David Wells said what may start out as additional authority alongside the
39:13
Word of God will eventually supplant its authority altogether See Rome.
39:22
I read this week of the lady from charisma magazine She's a senior editor there
39:27
If you kind of don't believe this kind of ongoing impression and God's speaking because God's speaking to her all the time this direct a verbal extra scriptural revelation
39:38
She was talking about doubt a holism So hi, my name is Mike Avondroth.
39:44
I'm a doubt a holic God has spoken in lots of ways in these last days.
39:53
That's today He has spoken past tense in his son in his apostolic messengers, and we have those and they're sufficient
40:04
Francis Chan God asked me to write the book you and me forever marriage in light of eternity
40:12
God told us to move If God tells you something I know this
40:19
It's important. It's Authoritative it's binding and you have a moral obligation to do it
40:28
But it's apart from Scripture God never said that as Daniel Phillips said
40:34
Why don't you just say if you have to move and you hear from God like this? Why don't you just say I was bored?
40:40
I was curious my kids hated here Say it and take responsibility for the decision don't try to put it off on God Friends everywhere we go in evangelicalism.
40:55
There's mysticism Even if some of you disagree with me May I push you back to what you know is?
41:04
authoritative infallible and sufficient and that is the Word of God I Want to appeal to you for those that don't quite believe me
41:15
I know you still have to think even with a dear man like Wayne Grudem who would say scriptures are sufficient
41:21
But why by the way, here's how you work through impressions Doesn't Hebrews chapter 1 verse 1 and 2 that talks about in the last days.
41:33
He spoke into us by his son Doesn't 2nd Timothy chapter 3 for pastoral ministry tell us that we have everything we need
41:45
And I'm telling you once mysticism gets in it never stops The Bible never commands you to tune into your inner voice it never teaches you how to do it
41:56
Don't you think the pastoral pistols would tell you by the way pastor? If somebody comes up to you and says I heard from God outside of Scripture And this is what
42:02
I heard him say how to test it what to do Yeah, this may be important because by the way, if God is speaking
42:08
I want to know so how do the elders know? There's nothing said in there because you read
42:14
Scripture you go. This is complete. It's final. It's authoritative Jesus said in Luke 11 28 on the contrary blessed are those who hear the
42:22
Word of God and observe it Never says tune into a voice never says. How do you know if it's not your own flesh your own sin
42:30
Satan somebody else? Are refried beans that you ate at night. It never says anything
42:40
When the number one book practically in the last 10 years Jesus calling is out and it's got apps journals calendars special versions for teens for women
42:55
Sarah young wrote this and I have friends who will say yeah,
43:01
I got some good things out of it. I Mean, it's all I can do not to go no -co on them, and I just go
43:07
I feel sorry for them Because they've lost their moorings to subjective mysticism
43:16
Anybody that says I'm gonna write a book by by taking a pencil and a journal and I'm listening for Jesus's voice and I'm gonna write it down I Began to wonder
43:26
Sarah said if I could receive messages during my times of communion with God I've been writing in a prayer journal for years, but that's one way communication.
43:34
I did all the talking I knew God communicated with me through the Bible Ready, but I yearned for more
43:44
Before I finished the quote Friends could it be if you're a mystic here could it be that you're you're open but cautious Does this have anything to do with it?
43:57
I wonder She goes on to say increasingly. I want to hear what God had to say to me personally on a given day
44:06
Friends here we have it right here read Psalm 1 we have it right here Yes, but I just need to be open and and cautious about this whole thing friends
44:14
I'm pushing you back to Hebrews 1 1 & 2 the sufficiency of Scripture. What kind of open caution do you need?
44:22
I forsake all and trust in this alone What people don't tell you is
44:30
Sarah Young's book has been corrected many times many revisions I don't know if God stuttered the first time or lied or she just misunderstood him
44:42
Softly, I announced my presence Shimmering hues of radiance tap gently at your consciousness seeking entrance though.
44:49
I have all power in heaven and earth I am infinitely tender with you the weaker you are the more gently
44:55
I approach you Let your weakness be a door to my presence whenever you feel inadequate. Remember that I'm your ever -present help.
45:03
I Felt weird saying that by the way, I With Jonathan Edwards say if you don't believe the
45:09
Bible is sufficient and you run around saying God told me God led me God This God that Edwards says that you're incorrigible
45:16
Because how can I talk to you because I'm trying to tell you what the scripture says and you trump me every time with how you felt and Now you have the
45:29
Jesus calling devotional Bible Where they're encouraging you? to be a channel or two
45:37
Set aside a half hour to start Get a piece of paper Ask the
45:42
Lord to speak To you through scripture in a way you can understand it then write down your question for prayer pause
45:49
This is where you wait and listen Start writing down tender words that he shares on The other hand may
46:02
I remind you because most of you are cessationists. I have a few goals for you as I want you to be a person who believes in the sovereignty of God and you have joy
46:16
Who wants to be around cranky old Calvinist all the time? Yeah, I'm a Calvinist Well, don't tell anybody because you're so mean and ornery who'd want to be one.
46:25
I Often say to myself I want Lord you to work in my life So that I become so nice around people that people will go.
46:33
You know, what if that's what a Calvinist is Sign me up so to friends if you're a cessationist and You're around somebody that's maybe not because nine people in evangelicalism today out of ten aren't
46:52
I Am NOT saying you can't talk to them, but just be nice Be sweet Truth is on your side and it has been for two thousand years
47:03
No new revelation not one word and we're not lacking for it.
47:10
And so we can be kind to people sweet to people and shepherd them along if You're mature in Christ.
47:17
You used to not be not be mature And for the rest of you I leave you with 2nd
47:23
Timothy 2 15 be diligent to present yourself to prove to God as a workman who does not be ashamed
47:31
Accurately handling your impressions and mysticism Sorry accurately handling the word of truth.
47:39
Let's pray father. I thank you for your word It is sufficient and I stake my case.
47:44
I stake the ministry here on Your word sufficient inerrant Have no need for anything else
47:52
Father it is wonderful when I look back in my life. I see how you led me. I see how you guided me
47:58
I see how you were there personally, I See how your spirit that dwells in me personally
48:05
Could stop me from doing things and push me forward but father. None of that is revelation.
48:10
That's just your guidance That's just you illumining your word so I can understand it. That's just you being a good shepherd
48:18
Father we believe in the Holy Spirit, but we don't believe he's still writing words And father if we ever need to know you love us, you don't have to tell us in our ears or a heart
48:28
We see it right there in Scripture I've loved you with an everlasting love and since you have loved us you wouldn't make us adrift
48:38
Out in the middle of nowhere without a word We long to hear your word. We're glad that you're a
48:43
God who speaks But would you give us I think what it really is Lord contentment Help us to be content with your word
48:51
That's enough and father I do pray that you'd help us to be kind to people who are working through these issues if what we know is true
48:58
It's only because you've had us believe that not because we're better. That's certainly not the case.
