The Speaking God (part 3) - [Hebrews 1:1-2]

Well, by the way, thank you for praying for my trip to Memphis. It was a profitable trip we I Spoke a couple times at contend a large youth conference and then did a couple live streaming shows. We recorded about eight no-compromise television shows verse by verse through Romans, and I'm glad to be back.

After I they canceled my flight from Newark to Memphis they canceled my flight from Memphis to Atlanta, so I really am glad to be back. Maybe the highlight of the trip though was yesterday morning about 415 a driver came to pick me up to take me to the airport.

And it was a different driver. And I was getting to know him a little bit. And I told him that I was a Bible teaching pastor and and he talked about a couple of churches that he's been to recently. One of the pastor it's a health wealth church and the pastor drives a Rolls-Royce.

I found that was interesting. So that's nothing compared to my Bentley so. And Another church that he went to is a Jehovah's Witness Church. He said that was kind of nice because they're just Bible teaching and It was not a lot of hooping and holler and not a lot of holy roller stuff going on and and I said well.

So, you know if you say something badly about my wife I'm going to address that and if you say something poorly about Jesus Christ I will as well and I said in this I thought this is my opportunity to preach to him.

I said, I just think of that little illustration hand that acronym hand. I said, can you imagine Jesus Christ a real person? He really lived on this earth H. He had the honors of God when angels would fall down.

When people fall down before angels, they'd say get up don't worship me. But when people worship Jesus, he accepted that worship H honors attributes that Jesus has the attributes of God. He knows everything.

He reads people's minds. He knew Nicodemus's questions before it were even asked. He has power. He has the attributes of God so he could walk on water could raise himself from the dead I said and he has the names of God.

And of course, this is all going against his Jehovah's Witnesses a teaching and then I could also talk about the greatness of Christ. He has the honors of God the attributes got the names of God. He's the Alpha and the Omega.

He's the first and last he's Savior King Lord and Then he does the deeds of God. HAND. He can forgive sins. Who can forgive sins but God alone. And then I begin to talk to him this kind of Jesus. Who's revealed in Scripture?

You can't just say well, I think I'll take him for hell insurance the Savior. But I won't follow him as Lord because the honor that he receives demands lordship. The attributes that he has demands lordship the names that he has demand lordship and his deeds demand lordship.

Friend you need to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ. Then he looked at me and I took this as a good sign. It's gonna sound funny, but he said what's that name of that radio show you? So I texted him the link yesterday.

The Final Revelation of God in the Son

And upon reflection I said to myself I am so glad that I have the final Product. I have the final fully revealed mind of God in Scripture. I didn't have to go on intuition. I didn't have to say God tell me what to say to him in terms of new revelation.

I could say God give me wisdom, of course, but God has spoken in these last days fully and Finally in the Lord Jesus Christ and his apostolic messengers and that is Hebrews 1, please turn there. God has spoken many times.

Can you imagine what if God never spoke? But since God is a speaking God since God wants to be known since God wants to be worshipped particularly Precisely the way he wants to be known and worshipped.

He has revealed himself not just in nature, but also particularly in Scripture things that you could never figure out on your own things about God that you could never understand. But he's gladly told us because he wants us to know him.

To be known by him and to know him and here's the good thing when God speaks. He speaks clearly and he speaks sufficiently. In other words God doesn't leave things out when we come to the Bible we don't have to say well, it's not sufficient.

It's Deficient. There are things in here that we wish we knew about that. We don't understand about God's forgiveness and salvation. On the contrary when God speaks he speaks Sufficiently what he says is enough and he's spoken finally and fully in the Lord Jesus Christ.

What we're going to do today is we're going to look at Hebrews chapter 1 1 and 2 again and Then ask the question since God has spoken fully and finally in Jesus. What does that do when it comes to people who say they hear God now?

What about mysticism? What about subjectivism? What about those who who? Somehow hear God audibly are in their heart now if God has spoken in these last days. Fully and finally in his son. Then what about extra revelation?

What about the authority of Scripture? What about? Sola Scriptura and so that's what we're gonna look at today and next week Lord willing. We'll get into some of the attributes of Jesus and what he's done in verses three and four.

Big picture remember Hebrews is about Jesus the priest. There's an eternal transcendent God and we are Finite creatures and we need a go-between. We need an arbitrator. We need an umpire. We need a mediator.

We need an advocate and this whole book is about the priest Christ Jesus. Who's not only God but also man so he can be the perfect Mediator. Everything about Hebrews speaks of Jesus as superiority. And in this first section Jesus is superior over the prophets.

We'll get to the angels in a couple weeks. Hebrews 1 1 as you know, it says reading from the ESV long ago. At many times and in many ways God spoke to our fathers by the prophets. Remember what's happening here.

He's saying in the old days God spoke bit by bit piece by piece here a little there a little. Progressing in revelation adding more to what he wants us to know through a variety of different prophets and Through his spokespeople and through through Job and through Elijah through Daniel through Jonah.

That's the way he used to speak in The past to our forefathers through the prophets in various ways, that's the way he used to speak. Now the book of Hebrews the writer says in verse 2, but in these last days.

You can study the last days nomenclature and it's it's between Jesus's first coming and second coming. So he came 2 ,000 years ago. He's gonna return sometime. I'd be nice if he came back this year, wouldn't it?

It would solve a lot of my problems. Lord come quickly. Honestly, that would just be so wonderful in Between these two comings the first and the second it's called the last days. So God used to talk in a variety of different ways in a variety different manners from dreams to audibly.

Speaking through fire and a pillar of smoke and now in these days he speaks to his speaks to us through his son. Do you notice in verse 2 again, but in these last days? The tense is different now. He has spoken.

It's a completed its past it's not ongoing not getting new revelation even there has spoken to us wonderfully, I'm glad he did by. Not with a definite article but stressing quality. He's spoken to us by his son.

I mean, it's one thing to have an errand boy or an errand girl. It's another thing to send your son send a daughter back in those days. Of course we think of son. Here we have God. Speaking the prophets.

Do you notice there is a definite article son? No definite article. God has spoken. And I think you even got a flicker of that from last week as we look at the transfiguration. Remember the father saying this is my beloved son.

Psalm 2 7 my chosen one. Isaiah 42 1. Hear him. Deuteronomy chapter 18 Verse 15 God has spoken in these last days in his son and through his apostolic messengers see if you think Peter Agrees with Hebrews as I read this portion from Acts.

I don't want you to go there. I just want you to hear Peter preaching and tell me if you think Peter Had the same thoughts that the writer of Hebrews is discussing. While I clung to Peter and John all the people utterly astonished ran together to them in the portico called Solomon's.

And when Peter saw it, he addressed the people men of Israel. Why do you wonder at this or why do you stare at us as? Though by our own power our piety we have made him walk. The God of Abraham the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob the God of our fathers.

Glorified his servant Jesus whom you delivered over and denied in the presence of Pilate when he had decided to release him but you denied the Holy and Righteous One and asked for a murderer to be granted to you and You killed the author of life whom God raised from the dead.

To this we are witnesses and by his name by faith in his name has made this man strong. Whom you see and know and the faith that is through Jesus has given the man this perfect health in the presence of You all and now brothers.

I know that you acted in ignorance as did your rulers. But what God foretold by the mouth of the prophets that his Christ would suffer he thus fulfilled. Repent therefore and turn back that your sins may be blotted out that the times of Refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord and that he may send the Christ appointed for you Jesus whom heaven must receive until the time of restoring for all things Which are about which God spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets long ago.

Here we go verse 22 of Acts 3 Moses said The Lord God will raise up for you a prophet like me from your brothers. You shall listen to him in whatever he tells you and it shall be that every soul Who does not listen to that Prophet shall be destroyed from the people and all the prophets who have spoken from Samuel and those who came after him also proclaimed these days.

You are the sons of the prophets and of the covenant that God had made with your fathers. Saying to Abraham and in your offspring shall all the families of the earth be blessed. God having raised up a servant sent him first to you to bless you by turning every one of you from your wickedness.

Peter knew the exact same thing that the writer of Hebrews knows. That God is going to raise up there are all kinds of prophets in the past. But the final prophet the one and only prophet the prophet who's his son.

He speaks finally they spoke in part. He speaks with completion. They started first. He has the final word. And so if he is the final word from God, then we must listen. Now here's an implication from that truth.

If God has spoken if these are the last days in which he has spoken. If he's spoken finally and fully in Jesus and his apostles and the Apostles are now gone and Jesus is in heaven. Then the revelation from God is complete.

The revelation from God is complete. How did God used to speak? Well here a little there a little he's now fully and finally Spoken in his son and now we have after 90 AD. The Canon is complete. The Apostles are gone.

Jesus is in heaven. Herman Bovink one of my favorite Dutch reformed writers said in Christ God's revelation has been fulfilled has been completed. He just basically stole Hebrews 1 and he now sounds profound because he's quoting scripture basically Scriptures enough because Christ's work is enough redemption has been accomplished.

Kevin de Young. Christ's work and the scripture stand or fall together. The son's redemption and the son's revelation must both be sufficient and. As such there is nothing more to be done and nothing more to be known about our salvation and our Christian walk.

Revelation is complete and here this Jesus through whom the truth is spoken sent out his messengers the Apostles and he said remember John 14. But the Helper the Holy Spirit whom the Father will send in my name He will teach you apostles all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.

In these last days God has spoken in and through his son alone period and then that son says by the way apostles. The Father will help you know exactly what I want you to know. What do we do when people come to us and say I have a new revelation from God.

God is speaking to me. God told me something that's outside of scripture. When even 25 years before the Canon is closed Judah's writing the faith once delivered for the Saints. He's understanding. This is coming to the end.

What do we do when people say I have a revelation from you when we have scripture that's sufficient. This lends itself to a good question. How do we know truth? Well, there's a variety of different ways you can find truth.

One is rationalism. That you use logic that you use reason alone to figure out what truth is. Rationalism logic and reason and use your mind. How do you find truth use your mind? There's another way to try to find truth empiricism.

I can find out truth by science by Experiments by testing by observation. So we've got intellectual we've got scientific. There's another way that people try to find truth and it's called mysticism. I have an extra rational experience and with rationalism appear empiricism and mysticism.

The final court of appeal the final judge on. What's right? And what's wrong is the person it's with people. The arbiter of truth is the individual if you'll turn your Bibles to 2nd Timothy chapter 3.

I'd like to remind you because I need the reminder as well. That we need to go to revelation and we need to go to truth outside of us. My appeal to you today is going to be keep trusting in the final revealed canon of Scripture.

Revelation from God it's outside of you. Therefore. It's not tainted by sin at all not tainted by the fall. We need information from the outside and scripture is sufficient. Hebrews 1 1 and 1 2 should drive you to say I believe in Sola Scriptura.

I believe in the sufficiency of Scripture if God speaks through the person of his son, that should be enough. That's the language God has spoken and he's spoken in these last days. No other speaking no other revelation from God.

Sola Scriptura found in 2nd Timothy chapter 3. Now how many solas are there by the way? Some of you raise your head right away and gave me the the five symbol. Well Yes for the Protestants, but for the general categories, let me give you a few these are kind of interesting.

Sola Ecclesia. What's Sola Ecclesia? Tradition magisterial authority and the Bible are equal to one another. Sola Ecclesia is what the Roman Catholic Church would teach. Magisterial Tradition and the Bible they're all equal and the final arbiter there of course is the church Sola Ecclesia.

There's Prima Scriptura. Prima Scriptura we have first the scriptures then tradition both having authority. Some Catholic some Protestant some Eastern Orthodox believe that I don't know why I'm wanting to say a lot of Latin words today, but I think I'm going to.

I just Feel like I'm RC Sproul or something. By the way, my life is complete. I want you to know that not because I just spent six hours in the Newark Airport. But one time I was st Andrews Church in Florida where RC Sproul is the pastor and it was a Wednesday night taping and they brought some students in of which I was one and they brought the chalkboard out and I was sitting right there and RC Sproul was talking and he wrote a Latin word on the chalkboard and I thought Take me to heaven now.

I've seen it all I Didn't on the chalkboard. There's Sola Ecclesia. There's Prima Scriptura. There's regular feed a Regular feed a Eastern Orthodox believe that the tradition is an infallible summary of Scripture passed on through the Apostles.

There's solo scriptura. Solo that is the Bible's the sole authority for truth and for acting in a godly way and therefore tradition creeds. Catechisms teach us nothing. Basically Fundamentalist usually subscribe to solo scriptura and we believe in Sola Scriptura.

Scriptures final. I mean it just sounds like Hebrews 1 to me. It's the infallible authority for faith and practice. Now 2nd Timothy chapter 3 verse 15 as I work through this ask yourself these questions.

Is scripture sufficient to save. Is scripture sufficient to sanctify? Just God breathe these things out. Or on the flip side of scripture deficient in any way. Remember Paul's writing to a pastor to Timothy.

How important is the Bible and ministry? That's the context picking it up in verse 15 of 2nd Timothy 3 and. How from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings? Which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.

Many of you and I commend you as the pastor teach your children the Bible from a little age. That's exactly what they bid did back in those days. Rabbi, Judah said quote the boy of five years old ought to apply to the study of sacred scriptures.

Teach your children the Bible from infancy and. Of course, we're talking about the Old Testament truth and the Messiah is seen of course in the Old Testament. And what do these Old Testament scriptures do they make you wise for salvation.

And remember the context instead of what the false teachers are teaching Timothy things that just gets you all involved in arguments that go nowhere. When you study the Old Testament scriptures, they can save your soul.

You'll see that in Genesis the lamb was needed. In Exodus the lamb was needed. Leviticus the lamb. Substantial lamb was needed. And then Paul goes on to write in verse 16 all scripture. What's he referring to there think before you answer all scripture.

What's he referring to there think before you answer all scripture? Old Testament and first Timothy. I would imagine and. Then by implication the rest of the Bible right but all scripture, and he's already written first Timothy.

Did Paul know first Timothy was scripture when he wrote it? Pretty did you address that in your bibliology section. Adventures in? Systematic theology odyssey. The general context is the Old Testament all scripture, but of course first Timothy's included there.

That's just kind of a trick question. All scriptures breathed out. ESV gets that right. Doesn't just contain the word doesn't become the word it is the word. Most people think we can't find that word breathed out.

It's one Greek word theophanous toss like a pneumic pneumatic drill. God breathing. We can't find that word outside the Bible or in the Bible some people think Paul Under the Spirit of God made this word up scriptures.

God breathed. Very words of Scripture are God's Word. Every part of Scripture is God's Word. Of course in the original autographs. It's God's Word. No air. No failing. And by the way if you're a pastor you need a tool kit, and what do you need to do?

I mean, I think of first of all I can't believe you ever hired me 20 years ago. 19 years ago. There are some 36 year old kid. What do you do when you how do you do ministry? I remember when I first got here.

We had some folks that wanted me to know. Roberts rules of orders. Roberts rule of order. I I. Second that what do you do? What was the what's the manual and Paul is saying to Timothy? Hey, you're out in the middle of nowhere in Asia at Ephesus, and here's the word.

Here's your tool kit. You've got one sword in your scabbard, and it's the Word of God and by the way. It's not just kind of like well. You know humans wrote it and and it might be untrustworthy. This is God breathe.

This is divine inspiration. God breathed the air into the Nostrils of Adam as it were and Breathe the Holy Ghost into the disciples. John 20 and here. It's in Scripture. What does the text not say all?

Human authors of Scripture are inspired people. Does it say that no the writings themselves are God breathe and anything that comes from God. It's got to be good for something and of course the text says it's profitable of course because God is doing it.

It's therefore profitable and useful and valuable and you can't say of the Old Testament are now any book of the Bible. Well Esther doesn't amount to much. Nehemiah is not really too good. A few of these other books are kind of worthless.

Song of Solomon who cares. No part is unprofitable. And what does this do? What does the Bible do? How great is the Word of God? For teaching. Notice that word there in 2nd Timothy. It tells us who God is what God requires and in the active sense.

The active teaching and the passive sense what is taught that is doctrine both are true. It helps us teach and it helps us know what to teach that is doctrine. What else does God's Word do the sufficient word?

Reproof. I Failed to live up to what God has required. I I see my sin. I'm Convicted by the Word of God ever read the Bible ever heard preaching and you go I'm convicted. I feel like I'm the only one in this room of a thousand people.

That's what the Bible does it convinces. Try to convince people that they're sinful in this world today. Basically impossible until the Spirit of God attends through the Bible and they are cut to the quick correction, oh, that's Wonderful.

He just doesn't slay us with reproof II he picks us up literally. Word correction is to stand up straight again to stand up straight again, and Then lastly to train us in righteousness. Hey Timothy, you're parachuted in the middle of Ephesus in the middle of nowhere.

They're running around shouting for two hours. Great is Diana of Ephesus. Artemis of Ephesus. And what do you have to work with? What's in your toolkit? I Mean for I'm getting better as the years go by but for a long time.

I thought if only I had one Phillips screwdriver and one crescent wrench I could fix about anything you need the right tools for the job, correct and. Here's the right tool and and it teaches it corrects it reproves trains.

Everything you need is there there's no deficiencies. Verse 17. That the man of God in order that the man of God in order that you Timothy the pastor. Of course, it's good for ladies. Of course, it's good for laymen, but this is talking about ministry leaders man of God.

That's an Old Testament term for preachers. That the preacher may be complete equipped for every good work. That's sufficiency of Scripture. Everything you need pastor you've got. You're capable for ministry sufficient for ministry adequate for ministry.

You're not just stuck out in the middle of nowhere with the crescent wrench. You got to change an engine. Can you change engines? You know, the Bible is pretty good and it's pretty sufficient. But we're not gonna know what to do with people's souls until 1900 years when Freud comes along there's nothing defective in it.

No deficiencies. You know. This is the 21st century and and we've made progress and we've made great strides and the Bible used to be good for old Antiquated people, but it's not really needed for us anymore.

Of course not. We believe in the doctrine of sola scriptura scriptures are sufficient. Scriptures are adequate scriptures cover everything. There's nothing that you need to know in the world. That's not found in Scripture when it comes to salvation and godliness.

Now here's the thing most evangelicals would quickly say we disagree with people who are in the Roman Catholic Church because we believe in sola scriptura the Bible alone. That Was a great fight of the Reformation and they believe in the Pope Traditions magisterium and we would see as Protestants that that would be wrong.

When Pope Pius the ninth says at the first Vatican Council in 1870 I am tradition. We would see the error to that. When Roman theologian John Eck said scriptures are not authentic except by the authority of the church.

We would understand that would be incorrect. The index of forbidden books written by Pope Pius the fourth in 1559 said. Since experience teaches that if the reading of the Holy Bible in the vernacular is permitted generally without discrimination.

More damage than advantage will result because of the boldness of men. The judgment of the bishops and inquisitors is to serve as a guide in this regard bishops and inquisitors may in accord with the Council of the local priest and confessor.

Allow Catholic translations of the Bible to be read by those of whom they realize that such reading will not lead to the detriment but to the increase of faith and piety. The permission is to be given in writing.

Whoever reads or has such a translation in his possession. Talking about of the Bible without permission cannot be absolved from his sin until he has turned in his Bible. We would realize that actually Pope was right in the sense that reading your Bible is dangerous.

Because those that really did became Protestant evangelicals. Now see most of us would say we get it. We don't do primus scriptura scripture first then tradition second. But where many Christians many evangelical Christians fall short with the doctrine of sola scriptura is when it comes to the idea of mysticism.

Subjective intuition and mysticism. Because it's the same argument with the Roman Catholic Church. We recognize Rome's primus scriptura, but we don't recognize our own. Leading of the Holy Spirit through words may be audible.

Maybe not audible how can you avoid subjectivity and Not have God speaking you ultimately take priority over what the Bible teaches. And the answer has to be Hebrews 1 1 2 in the doctrine of sola scriptura.

Everywhere I go. I was asked a question a Q &A session a few days ago. What's the biggest problem you see Mike in the evangelical church? And I said the doctrine of mysticism. Because what does mysticism do many things?

I'll tell you one it divides the church the haves they get mystic impressions and God talks with them and and they get these kind of things and prophetic utterances and then the have-nots. Dallas seminary trained Jack Deere said in his book surprised by the power of the Spirit.

Today after years of practical experiences and intense study on the subject of God speaking I am convinced that God doesn't deed speak apart from the Bible. Though never in contradiction to it and he speaks to all of his children.

Not just especially gifted prophetic people and he will speak to all of us in amazing detail. Now to be fair to Dallas seminary they would not ascribe to that position anymore. But I'm not trying to say this is some crazy person on TBN or something.

Although they are crazy on TBN. Sola scriptura would make me ask the question. How can God still speak today? Friends if you believe in the canon of Scripture as closed 66 books of the Bible if you believe the scriptures are infallible errant and sufficient and You believe you have the Spirit of God to Illumine the scriptures and guide the church than you are.

Are you ready? You're a cessationist to some degree. But you're on your way. Mysticism denies sola scriptura. Denies the evangelical commitment to soul revelation found in Scripture outside of us. John Wimber power evangelism, maybe I needed this on the plane yesterday or in Newark a few days ago.

God revealed to John Wimber that There were some letters on a man's forehead. He wanted to evangelize this man and he saw letters on the man's head. Distinct letters Wimber said and the words on the man's head that God showed him distinctly were the words adultery.

So God said to Wimber quote in Wimber's book God speaking allegedly. Tell him if he doesn't turn from his adultery. I'm going to take him. Paul Cain Said that God appeared to him in the front seat of his car.

I know that's not true because he would have Gotten a head-on collision because he would have been so frightened by the eternal God in his front seat. But he said if you really want the kind of intimate walk with me you profess to want.

You must remember that I walk alone and that is why Paul Cain never married. It's not just the crazy TV preachers. Bill Hybels in his book honest to God. Here's what he says when he has his prayer journal out and if you have a prayer journal because you're praying for people great.

But if you're hearing from God. Allah. Sarah young I'd take you back to Hebrews chapter 1, but here's what Bible says in his book. Lord you talk to your children all through history and you've said you're an unchangeable God talk to me now.

I'm Listening. I'm open. Friends, what's the problem when you say you talk all the way through history and you're an unchangeable God. So that means you should talk to me. Because scripture says in the last days he speaks through his son.

He used to talk in a variety of ways. But this is how he speaks. So he asked God's questions and he gets impressions. And he writes them down. James Dobson. Straight talk to men and their wives. You would not think he was a charismatic.

A crazy charismatic. Wild charismatic, but he was mystical. What's your point pastor Mike and all these things? I'm just telling you it's everywhere you go. It is everywhere you go. Dobson's dad was dying and he rushed to the hospital bed and God spoke to him according to James Dobson.

You are going to write a book for husbands and fathers based on the life of your dad. If scriptures were sufficient, I don't know why. James Dobson just couldn't say I'm gonna miss my dad. He's dying.

I think I'll write a book. Dobson said I experienced one of these quiet moments of awareness when I knew the Lord had spoken. If America is going to survive these incredible stresses and dangers it now faces.

It will be because husbands and fathers again place their families at the highest level of their system of priorities. Reserving a portion of their time and energy for leadership within their home end.

Quote. You say Mike the burden of proof is on you. You prove to me that all these things didn't happen friends. Let's be nice. It's nice to be nice and it's good to be good. The burden of proof my friend is on you.

The Bible teaches sola scriptura. The Bible teaches that with a An exclamation. You say well if God tells me something I'm first to see if it's in Scripture and see if it matches up. Friends if he tells you something and you see that it's in Scripture and it's matches up.

He didn't need to say anything. It's already in Scripture if anybody writes a book called how to listen to God. You better run. Oh Charles Stanley how to listen to God. Here's his faulty premise. God never changes.

God used to speak. He must speak. New revelation today. Quote. Many people do not fully believe that God speaks today. I Mean, I I believe he speaks today, by the way. As my friend Justin Peter says if you'd like to hear God read your Bible.

If you'd like to hear God out loud read your Bible out loud. Many people Stanley said do not fully believe that God speaks today. If we think we get direction only through Scripture. Like you poor saps here at BBC.

Then we'll miss out on much of what God has to share because he will speak so often through his spirit through circumstances and other people we must make absolutely certain that we're fully convinced and Persuaded that God does not.

That God does speak to us personally. Friends that deny sola scriptura and that makes the haves and the have-nots. And that makes you look yearn for things and all of a sudden I say to myself Yeah, but was that me?

Was it my my bosom burning, but I'm affected by the fall. Why can't I just say you know what the just shall live by faith? I'm gonna walk by faith. This is enough. And if you think you're gonna want to do something then don't blame it on God don't say God told you just go ahead and do it.
