Bible teaching pastor and and he talked about a couple of churches that he's been to recently One the pastor it's a health wealth church and the pastor drives a

Rolls -Royce I found that was interesting said that's nothing compared to my Bentley. So And another church that he went to is a

Jehovah's Witness Church he said that was kind of nice because they're just Bible teaching and It was not a lot of hooping and holler and not a lot of holy roller stuff going on.

And and I said well So, you know if you say something badly about my wife I'm going to address that and if you say something poorly about Jesus Christ I will as well and I said in this

I thought this is my opportunity to preach to him I said I just think of that little illustration hand that acronym hand

I said, can you imagine Jesus Christ a real person? He really lived on this earth

H He had the honors of God when angels would fall down When people fall down before angels, they'd say get up don't worship me.

But when people worship Jesus, he accepted that worship H honors attributes that Jesus has the attributes of God.

He knows everything. He reads people's minds He knew Nicodemus's questions before it were even asked he has power

He has the attributes of God so he could walk on water could raise himself from the dead

I said and he has the names of God And of course, this is all going against his Jehovah's Witnesses a teaching and then

I could also talk about the greatness of Christ He has the honors of God the attributes got the names of God.

He's the Alpha and the Omega He's the first and last he's Savior King Lord and Then he does the deeds of God HAND he can forgive sins

Who can forgive sins but God alone and then I begin to talk to him this kind of Jesus Who's revealed in Scripture?

You can't just say well, I think I'll take him for hell insurance the Savior But I won't follow him as Lord because the honor that he receives demands lordship

The attributes that he has demands lordship the names that he has demand lordship and his deeds demand lordship

Friend you need to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ Then he looked at me and I took this as a good sign

God give me wisdom, of course, but God has spoken in these last days fully and Finally in the

Lord Jesus Christ and his apostolic Messengers and that is Hebrews 1, please turn there

God has spoken many times. Can you imagine what if God never spoke?

But since God is a speaking God since God wants to be known since God wants to be worshipped particularly

Precisely the way he wants to be known and worshipped He has revealed himself not just in nature, but also particularly in Scripture things that you could never figure out on your own things about God that you could never understand

But he's gladly told us because he wants us to know him To be known by him and to know him and here's the good thing when

God speaks He speaks clearly and he speaks sufficiently

In other words, God doesn't leave things out when we come to the Bible. We don't have to say well, it's not sufficient.

It's Deficient there are things in here that we wish we knew about that We don't understand about God's forgiveness and salvation on the contrary when

God speaks he speaks Sufficiently what he says is enough and he's spoken finally and fully in the

Lord Jesus Christ What we're going to do today is we're going to look at Hebrews chapter 1 1 and 2 again and Then ask the question since God has spoken fully and finally in Jesus What does that do when it comes to people who say they hear

God now? What about mysticism? What about subjectivism? What about those who who?

Somehow hear God audibly are in their heart now if God has spoken in these last days

Fully and finally in his son Then what about extra revelation?

What about the authority of Scripture? What about? Sola Scriptura and so that's what we're gonna look at today and next week

Lord willing We'll get into some of the attributes of Jesus and what he's done in verses three and four

Big picture remember Hebrews is about Jesus the priest There's an eternal transcendent

God and we are Finite creatures and we need a go -between.

We need an arbitrator. We need an umpire. We need a mediator We need an advocate and this whole book is about the priest

Christ Jesus Who's not only God but also man so he can be the perfect Mediator everything about Hebrews speaks of Jesus's superiority

And in this first section Jesus is superior over the prophets We'll get to the angels in a couple weeks

Hebrews 1 1 as you know, it says reading from the ESV Long ago at many times and in many ways

God spoke to our fathers by the prophets Remember what's happening here.

He's saying in the old days God spoke bit by bit piece by piece here a little there a little

Progressing in revelation adding more to what he wants us to know through a variety of different prophets and Through his spokespeople and through through Job and through Elijah through Daniel through Jonah That's the way he used to speak

In the past to our forefathers through the prophets in various ways That's the way he used to speak

Now the book of Hebrews the writer says in verse 2, but in these last days

You can study the last days nomenclature and it's it's between Jesus's first coming and second coming

So he came 2 ,000 years ago. He's gonna return some time. It'd be nice if he came back this year, wouldn't it?

It would solve a lot of my problems Lord come quickly. Honestly, that would just be so Wonderful in Between these two comings the first and the second it's called the last days

So God used to talk in a variety of different ways in a variety different manners from dreams to audibly Speaking through fire and a pillar of smoke and now in these days.

He speaks to his speaks to us through his son Do you notice in verse 2 again, but in these last days? The tense is different now.

He has spoken To completed its past it's not ongoing not getting new revelation even there has spoken to us wonderfully,

I'm glad he did by Not with a definite article but stressing quality.

He's spoken to us by his son I mean, it's one thing to have an errand boy or an errand girl

It's another thing to send your son send a daughter back in those days Of course we think of son

Here we have God Speaking the prophets. Do you notice there is a definite article son?

No definite article God has spoken And I think you even got a flicker of that from last week as we look at the transfiguration

Remember the father saying this is my beloved son Psalm 2 7 my chosen one.

Verse 15 God has spoken in these last days in his son and through his apostolic messengers see if you think

Peter Agrees with Hebrews as I read this portion from Acts. I don't want you to go there

I just want you to hear Peter preaching and tell me if you think Peter Had the same thoughts that the writer of Hebrews is discussing

Why do you wonder at this or why do you stare at us as? Though by our own power our piety we have made him walk

The God of Abraham the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob the God of our fathers Glorified his servant

Jesus whom you delivered over and denied in the presence of Pilate when he had decided to release him

But you denied the Holy and Righteous One and asked for a murderer to be granted to you

And you killed the author of life whom God raised from the dead To this we are witnesses and by his name by faith in his name has made this man strong Whom you see and know and the faith that is through Jesus has given the man this perfect Health in the presence of you all and now brothers

I know that you acted in ignorance as did your rulers But what God foretold by the mouth of the prophets that his

Christ would suffer he thus fulfilled repent therefore and turn back that your sins may be blotted out that the times of Refreshing may come from the presence of the

Lord and that he may send the Christ appointed for you Jesus whom heaven must receive until the time of restoring for all things which are about Which God spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets long ago.

Here we go verse 22 of Acts 3 Moses said The Lord God will raise up for you a prophet like me from your brothers

You shall listen to him in whatever he tells you and it shall be that every soul

Who does not listen to that? Prophet shall be destroyed from the people and all the prophets who have spoken from Samuel and those who came after him

Also proclaimed these days You are the sons of the prophets and of the covenant that God had made with your fathers

Saying to Abraham and in your offspring shall all the families of the earth be blessed

God having raised up a servant sent him first to you to bless you by turning every one of you from your wickedness

Peter knew the exact same thing that the writer of Hebrews knows That God is going to raise up there are all kinds of prophets in the past But the final prophet the one and only prophet the prophet who's his son.

He speaks Finally, they spoke in part. He speaks with completion. They started first He has the final word.

And so if he is the final word from God, then we must listen Now here's an implication from that truth

If God has spoken if these are the last days in which he has

Spoken if he's spoken finally and fully in Jesus and his apostles and the

Apostles are now gone and Jesus is in heaven Then the revelation from God is complete

The revelation from God is complete. How did God used to speak? Well here a little there a little he's now fully and finally

Spoken in his son and now we have after 90 AD. The canon is complete

The Apostles are gone. Jesus is in heaven Herman Bovink one of my favorite

Dutch reformed writers said in Christ God's revelation has been completed

He just basically stole Hebrews 1 and he now sounds profound because he's quoting scripture basically

A scripture is enough because Christ's work is enough redemption has been accomplished

Apostles The Father will help you know exactly what I want you to know What do we do when people come to us and say

I have a new revelation from God God is speaking to me. God told me something that's outside of Scripture When even 25 years before the canon is closed

Judah's writing the faith once delivered for the Saints. He's understanding.

This is coming to the end What do we do when people say

I have a revelation from you when we have Scripture? That's sufficient. This lends itself to a good question

How do we know truth? Well, there's a variety of different ways. You can find truth

One is rationalism That you use logic that you use reason alone to figure out what truth is

Rationalism logic and reason and use your mind. How do you find truth use your mind? There's another way to try to find truth

Empiricism I can find out truth by science by Experiments by testing by observation.

So we've got intellectual. We've got scientific There's another way that people try to find truth and it's called mysticism.

I have an extra rational experience and with rationalism appear empiricism and mysticism the final court of appeal the final judge on What's right?

And what's wrong is the person it's with people The arbiter of truth is the individual if you'll turn your

Bibles to 2nd Timothy chapter 3 I'd like to remind you because I need the reminder as well

That we need to go to revelation and we need to go to truth outside of us My appeal to you today is going to be keep trusting in the final revealed canon of Scripture Revelation from God it's outside of you.

Therefore. It's not tainted by sin at all not tainted by the fall We need information from the outside and Scripture is sufficient

Hebrews 1 1 and 1 2 should drive you to say I believe in sola scriptura

I believe in the sufficiency of Scripture if God speaks through the person of his Son that should be enough

That's the language God has spoken and he's spoken in these last days No other speaking no other

Let me give you a few these are kind of interesting sola ecclesia What's sola ecclesia?

Tradition magisterial authority and the Bible are equal to one another

Sola ecclesia is what the Roman Catholic Church would teach Magisterial tradition and the

Bible they're all equal and the final arbiter there of course is the church sola Ecclesia, there's prima scriptura

Prima scriptura we have first the scriptures then tradition Both having authority some

Catholics some Protestants some Eastern Eastern Orthodox believe that I don't know why I'm wanting to say a lot of Latin words today, but I think

I want you to know that not because I just spent six hours in the Newark Airport But one time

I was st. Andrews Church in Florida where RC Sproul's the pastor and it was a Wednesday night taping

There's sola ecclesia. There's prima scriptura. There's regula fide Regula fide

Eastern Orthodox believe that the tradition is an infallible summary of Scripture passed on through the

Apostles There's solo scriptura Solo, that is the Bible's the sole authority for truth and for acting in a godly way and therefore tradition creeds catechisms teach us nothing basically

Fundamentalist usually subscribe to sola scriptura and we believe in sola Scriptura scriptures final.

I mean it just sounds like Hebrews 1 to me. It's the infallible authority for faith and practice

Now 2nd Timothy chapter 3 verse 15 as I work through this ask yourself these questions

Remember Paul's writing to a pastor to Timothy. How important is the

Which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus? Many of you and I commend you as the pastor teach your children the

Bible from a little age That's exactly what they bid did back in those days

Rabbi, Judah said quote the boy of five years old ought to apply to the study of sacred scriptures teach your children the

Bible from infancy and of course we're talking about the Old Testament truth and the Messiah is seen of course in the

Old Testament and What do these Old Testament scriptures do they make you wise for salvation?

And remember the context instead of what the false teachers are teaching Timothy things that just gets you all involved in arguments that go nowhere

When you study the Old Testament scriptures, they can save your soul. You'll see that in Genesis the lamb was needed

In Exodus the lamb was needed Leviticus the lamb Substantial lamb was needed and then

Paul goes on to write in verse 16 all scripture What's he referring to there think before you answer all scripture?

Old Testament and first Timothy I would imagine and then by implication the rest of The Bible right but all scripture and he's already written first Timothy did

Song of Solomon who cares No part is unprofitable, and what does this do?

What does the Bible do how great is the Word of God? for teaching Notice that word there in 2nd

There's nothing that you need to know in the world. That's not found in Scripture when it comes to salvation and godliness

Now here's the thing most Evangelicals would quickly say we disagree with people who are in the

Roman Catholic Church Because we believe in sola scriptura the Bible alone that was a great fight of the

Reformation and they believe in the Pope Traditions magisterium and we would see as Protestants that that would be wrong

When Pope Pius the ninth says at the first Vatican Council in 1870 I am tradition

We would see the error to that When Roman theologian

John Eck said scriptures are not authentic except by the authority of the church We would understand that would be incorrect

I am convinced that God doesn't deed speak apart from the Bible though Never in contradiction to it and he speaks to all of his children

Not just especially gifted prophetic people and he will speak to all of us in amazing detail

Now to be fair to Dallas seminary they would not ascribe to that position anymore But I'm not trying to say this is some crazy person on TBN or something.

How can God still speak today? Friends if you believe in the canon of Scripture as closed 66 books of the
